Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School has a new title. The Toronto Catholic District School Board recently bestowed upon the school the designation of ‘Regional Arts Centre’ for the south central region of Toronto – even though the high school at the corner of Bloor Street West and Dundas Street West had been known for about a decade as the Art School @ Marrocco. “I am so proud that the school

has been awarded the designation of Regional Arts Centre. It is a true reflection of the focus and emphasis we place on the arts at the school, and a recognition of the exceptional programming and faculty that we have,” Principal Derek Chen said. “With the designation, we hope the message comes across very clearly that we are intent on attracting students who want to attend a school with high academic standards, and one in which they can excel in one or more of the many areas in the arts that we offer.” >>>new, page 7

Centre for Addiction and Mental Health hosts fashion show Suits Me Fine event celebrates resilience and recovery NATALIE CHU plv@insidetoronto.com

ressed in a bright orange and gold tunic, Bronwen Sims looked radiant. Sims was among 35 individuals at Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) who took to the stage at this year’s “Suits Me Fine” fashion show May 29. Every year, current and former clients participate in the show, dressed in pieces from CAMH’s volunteer-run clothing program, Suits Me Fine. “Doing the show is really a chance to boost your confidence and develop a sense of community,” Sims said. The theme of this year’s show was “Look how far you’ve come” in honour of the resilience and recovery demonstrated by CAMH clients. Sims’ recovery story
began six years ago, when she could barely find work and was surviving on Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) cheque. The little income she had made it almost impossible to purchase suitable clothing for job interviews. However, through the CAMH Suits Me Fine program, she was given the right outfit – a powder blue business suit, which she wore to an interview for a part-time position at the mental health centre. Sims said that to this day, the interviewer, now a coworker, still comments on the look. “The world can be quite judgmental,” Sims said. “If you’re not looking good and not feeling good, it’s hard to feel confident and put yourself out there.” Now Sims works full time as a peer support worker at CAMH. She helps clients currently admitted or during their first few

months post-treatment transition back into society. The first month is the most critical time of recovery, Sims said.
Norma McDowall, the show’s coordinator, said she began the event 10 years ago to “show how beautiful the clients are.”
“Our clients have grown so much,” McDowall said. “They can now wear colours and feel happy and look in the mirror and say
‘That’s me,’” she said. McDowall said the show has become so popular clients are requesting to be a part of it a year in advance. Except for a couple of years, Sims has been involved with each fashion show. She has since invited other clients to participate. Sims said organizers work hard to create outfits that reflect each client’s style and story. “It’s really personal,” Sims said. Participants also get to keep their outfit at the end of the show. “When the going gets tough, I have to remind myself how far I’ve come, literally,” Sims said. Though she still struggles with her mental health at times, she looks to her own story as inspiration. “Working on your recovery doesn’t always have to be clinical,” Sims said. “Taking care of my mental health can be fun and there are so many ways I can feel better,” she said.

We need to commemorate all facets of military service T
his Friday marks the 70th anniversary of D-Day, when thousands of Canadian soldiers and Allied forces led a successful invasion of France off the beaches of Normandy during the Second World War. It’s an event that’s earned a honourable place in our history books and put us forever in the debt of the brave soldiers who risked their lives for such a critical mission, which would ultimately turn the tide and end the war. Canada’s role was a major one but it did not go without sacrifice, as Canadians suffered more than 1,000 casualties, including 359 killed. As we honour and remember those who served – sadly, a our view lifetime ago for most of those soldiers – let’s extend our comLooking after memoration on this special day also consider other impacts of our veterans a to military service. For instance, take time to think priority of the families who did, and continue to, watch their loved ones head off to war. At city hall tomorrow, a special event is taking place to mark the anniversary of D-Day and one of the speakers is Joanne O’Halloran, whose father Edward served during the Second World War and was at the Normandy invasion. She’ll be sharing her experience as a soldier’s child. It’s a perspective we don’t hear often, but one that needs to be heard, as well as that of partners, mothers and fathers. Soldiers and veterans need our support, but their families do, too. Something else that should be incorporated into the tradition of military commemoration, is increasing support for the mental health needs of soldiers when they return home. Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be a relatively new term, but it’s not a new illness and its designation comes too late for generations of soldiers and families who suffered without help. We have a responsibility to look after the people who fight for us, so let’s support them wholly during Friday’s service and after as well.

Ford’s rehab working wonders for voters It was not so very long ago that Mayor Rob Ford longed to be anywhere but in the bosom of his constituents – at least when it came to the observation of Canada Day July 1. In 2011, 2012 and 2013, our mayor would make a bee-line for his family’s cottage rather than wave a flag in Toronto and, coincidentally, march in the Pride Parade. Not so in 2014. In an interview from the facility where he is undergoing therapy for alcohol addiction, Ford declared this week he’ll be back in Toronto for July 1. At that point, he’ll attend Canada Day celebrations and take his re-election campaign out of the holding pattern it’s been in since April 30. He told The Toronto Sun he’s a changed man, and is ready to make amends for all the wrong he’s done us. And of course he wants to run for another term as
david nickle the city mayor of the biggest city in Canada. When that happens, I suppose we’ll all have to contend with him. Thinking time In the meantime, Toronto has another month, nearly, to appreciate our own bout of rehab. Think about it: for just more than a month, we’ve been able to spend most of our time doing what people ought to during an election: considering what sort of city we’d like to be in, and worrying over the management of the one we’ve got. In the mayoral race, John Tory has finally come forward with his transit plan, and while it’s got its problems, at least it’s not a man screaming “subways”

over and over again. Even when the talk’s gotten rough, it’s been measured and thoughtful and respectful. civilized That’s been the case in matters of governance, too. Aside from a bad evening when Councillor Doug Ford and a group of his constituents urged a house looking after autistic youth to pack up and leave, talk’s been civil. We’re having a provincial election without, so far, a single parade led by Rob and Doug Ford. It is almost peaceful in Toronto. And it may well stay that
way. When Ford returns to his titular post as mayor, there will be just two more council meetings before the municipal election campaign starts in earnest. The serious campaigns, which is to say the ones that didn’t take a break to dry out in cottage country, will be organized, and funded, and by summer’s end consolidating their presence and support – their platforms mostly unveiled. The electorate, having been schooled in such for the past few months, will be ready for a serious civic talk. Which is to say, going into the election, we should be in good shape: rehab, if not for our mayor then at least for our damaged city politick, having worked its wonders.

Parkdale-High Park candidates debate the issues outdoors ERIN HATFIELD plv@insidetoronto.com Although it was a pleasant spring evening, it wasn’t the weather that led the Roncesvalles-Macdonell Residents’ Association (RMRA) to host its ParkdaleHigh Park provincial allcandidates debate outdoors Tuesday, May 27. After years of hosting its meetings and debates at Fern Avenue Public School in Roncesvalles Village, RMRA Chair Brian Torry said it was brought to his attention the building is not fully accessible. The decision was made to host the debate in the schoolyard, with about 130 residents gathering around an elevated doorway where the candidates from the four major parties addressed them. The move outdoors, in part, led to the debate being opened with a question from the RMRA executive about the state of this school and others in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB).
“What will you do to address the backlog of repairs at schools and to make sure that all public buildings are accessible,” Torry asked the candidates. Tim Rudkins from the Green Party of Ontario said first, schools need to be fixed and second, the province needs to look at where the money comes from to fix them. He said between allowing the TDSB to leverage economic development charges and by merging the TDSB and the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB), they could access billions of dollars for repairs. Jamie Ellerton, the candidate for the Ontario PC Party, said he and his party are committed to adhering to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) to make all public buildings accessible by 2025. He also said as MPP, he would work to make sure Parkdale-High Park, where schools are growing in size, gets its fair share of the education budget. Incumbent MPP and NDP
Photo/ERIN HATFIELD
The four main candidates vying for the provincial riding of Parkdale-High Park including the PC Party’s Jamie Ellerton, speaking at the microphone, Liberal Nancy Leblanc, the Green Party’s Tim Rudkins and incumbent NDP candidate Cheri DiNovo face a crowd of constituents at Fern Avenue school.
candidate Cheri DiNovo said the province is not on track to meet AOAD by 2025, and Fern Avenue Public School is an example of that. She added she is not running her campaign on promises, but instead on her track record, which includes saving school pools from closure. She said she would continue to fight for funding for schools in the area. Nancy Leblanc, the Ontario Liberal Party candidate, said the state of area schools is
something she has been hearing about at the doors of constituents. The good news, she said, is the Liberals have provided funding for schools, but as MPP she would push the government to work with the TDSB to make sure funding gets to the ground level. The candidates went on to be questioned by area residents about electric trains, plans for transit, views on proportional representation, slum landlords and taxing small businesses, but
perhaps the most encompassing question was about their motivation for running and what they aren’t willing to compromise on. “I pride myself on being an honest, straight-forward person,” Leblanc said. “I am upfront with people when they ask me a question. I sometimes don’t give them the best response because I am being honest.” She went on to say she would do her best to maintain that quality. In terms of her goals for the riding, Leblanc said she is interested in education and putting in place a program in schools in Parkdale to ensure young people can finish high school. With regard to motivation, DiNovo said, “Ethics are a priority to me, that is why I don’t run on promises, I run on what we have actually accomplished.” DiNovo said she would continue to make electric trains along the rail line that runs through the riding a top priority.
“Without clean trains, everything else is moot,” DiNovo said. “Without clean air to breath, without our children’s health, without schools that can let our children out into the playgrounds...this will not be the RoncesvallesMacdonell that we know.” Ellerton answered the question by speaking to how in his youth, Toronto was seen as a land of promise and how that isn’t the case today. “For the two hours we are here today, our debt is going up $3 million in Ontario,” Ellerton said. “Ontario doesn’t have a revenue problem; Ontario has a spending problem and my No. 1 priority as your MPP at Queen’s Park will be to have Ontario live within its means.” Rudkins said he is running because it is his opportunity to tell the powers that be he isn’t happy with this province’s state of affairs. The provincial election takes place June 12.

New title reflects school’s strong arts-focused pedigree >>>from page 1 Ab o u t 1 2 y e a r s a g o, teachers Jeana McCabe and Heather Corriveau questioned just how the Catholic high school could set itself apart from the public school system. “We thought, ‘How do we compete with the public system when four of our credits are required religion courses,” McCabe said. McCabe and Corriveau credit former Bishop Marrocco teacher Sean Gorman, who took the initiative and said, ‘Why don’t we teach religion through the arts?’ And, that’s what he did. He turned parables, like The Good Samaritan, into dramatic productions while modernizing the stor y, McCabe said. “He took the curriculum, the religious text and scripture and created theatre productions to deliver

religion courses in Grade 9,” Corriveau added. In Grade 10, because McCabe’s background is in film, her religion arts class creates social justice documentary film shorts. She encourages her students to go out on the street and talk to people who are experiencing social injustice, such as the homeless and seniors. The high school’s new designation coincides with the 10th anniversary of its annual ‘Just Docs Festival,’ which took place Tuesday, May 27 at the Revue Cinema in Roncesvalles Village. “I think it’s perfect that

the designation coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Just Docs Festival. I think that’s justice,” quipped McCabe. McCabe screened as many as 10 of her students’ sixminute films on subjects like bullying, the environment and mental health. New this year was the subject of child labour. One of her students investigated the subject in light of the Indonesian garment factory collapse last year. On a trip to visit her family there, she got footage of the kids at sewing machines, McCabe said. Since the school became art-focused a decade ago, enrolment has increased and maintained over the years in an environment in which student populations are decreasing, said McCabe.

OFFICIALLY DESIGNATED IN 1996, the Parkdale-High Park riding has been represented in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario since 1999. There are more than 107,000 residents in the district, according to 2013 City of Toronto statistics. Parkdale-High Park encompasses seven neighbourhoods surrounding High Park, including Swansea, Parkdale, the south half of the Junction, Runnymede-Bloor West Village, Lambton Baby Point and Roncesvalles Village. NDP MPP Cheri DiNovo is the incumbent. In addition to the NDP, PC, Liberal and Green candidates below, Libertarian Party candidate Redmond Weissenberger is also running.

Tell us about one local issue that you plan to champion as MPP.
2
What will you do to improve transit for your constituents?
3
Tell us about your background and qualifications.
4
What’s your opinion on the need for the Ontario Municipal Board?
■ I will continue to fight for more funding for our schools. Our children don’t learn well in overcrowded classrooms and in portables. Together with the parent councils, I successfully got funding released for Keele St. P.S. and Swansea P.S. We need that for all our schools. I have fought to keep swimming pools open in our schools. Many of our schools are very old and we need more money for the maintenance of our school buildings.
■ Electrification of the Union Pearson ARL is a priority. Working together with the community, I was successful in getting an Environmental Assessment. I will continue to push for electrification now, not later. We do not want dirty diesel running through our neighbourhoods. I continue to advocate for more investment in transit. We need a downtown relief line immediately and funds from a modest corporate tax increase dedicated to transit.
■ I am a United Church minister and a former small business owner. I have had the honour of representing Parkdale–High Park for the last eight years. At Queen’s Park, I have tabled the most number of bills with tri-party support. I was successful in getting Toby’s Law passed, amending the Ontario Human Rights Code for the first time in 25 years. I have been voted Best MPP and served as Deputy Speaker of the Legislature.
■ Seven years ago, I tabled a motion to free Toronto from the OMB. The OMB is an unelected and unaccountable board that has the power to override local community consultations and the City of Toronto Planning. The Liberal government has promised for years to reform the OMB but instead teamed with the Conservatives and killed NDP Bill 20 at Committee. Our treasures like High Park face serious threat if we don’t control development around it.
■ Gridlock. As our city continues to grow, so does the problem of gridlock. It’s not just people commuting in from Richmond Hill or Mississauga who endure endless traffic jams – getting around Toronto is becoming much more difficult for people who live and work in the city. I am passionate about helping resolve Toronto’s transit challenges and the PC Party is the only party with a plan to improve transit in the GTA without raising your taxes.
■ The Million Jobs Plan will create 96,000 jobs just by seizing the wheel and getting the GTA moving with better transit. Our transportation plan will put the province in charge of all rail-based transit and major highways in the GTA. It includes building the east-west express line connecting downtown with Etobicoke in the west and Scarborough in the east. That will give our subways some breathing room. And we won’t have to raise taxes to achieve this.
■ As a small business owner and experienced community advocate, I am running for MPP to get Queen’s Park focused on creating job opportunities for young Ontarians and to get transit built. With a decade of experience advising senior political leaders in Canada and running my own strategic communications business, I want to take my involvement to the next level as your MPP and be on the front lines of bringing generational change to Queen’s Park.
■ I believe that the OMB is an excellent tool for balancing the concerns of individual citizens, developers, and cities. But it is important for cities to be able to decide for themselves where their future growth will go. The intensification demands of provincial planning policy should not override local decision-making.
■ When I was door knocking recently in the heart of Parkdale, I met multiple immigrant families with small children. They told me they want their kids to finish high school and go on to university. As a Liberal, I get that. We need to find a way to give them more help, and we’re going to work on that when I’m the MPP.
■ We have five subway stations in the riding, but only two are accessible. The seniors at the Loyola Arrupe Centre are across the street from Keele Station, but many have difficulty accessing it. We need to make that a priority. The recent budget that the NDP refused to support had new funding for transit infrastructure – as our MPP I’ll work to bring that funding here to improve accessibility for our residents.
■ I’m a policy advisor, community activist, governance consultant and lawyer who has lived in Parkdale-High Park for more than 10 years. I’m active in the community as a board member of the Parkdale Community Food Bank and Swansea’s South Kingsway Neighbourhood Committee, and I’ve used my blog Impolitical, which has received over 1.1 million page views since 2005, to advocate for progressive public policy issues.
■ Responsible development in ParkdaleHigh Park concerns many residents, including myself. I was involved with the South Kingsway Neighbourhood Committee to oppose the size and scale of the proposed development at 34-50 Southport Street. I believe citizens should have an appeal body from municipal decisions. That body – whether it is the OMB or a new city-initiated local entity – must be neutral, accessible to citizens and must guarantee a fair hearing for residents and appellants.
■ Developing a stronger small business sector. Small businesses create more jobs than big business, return dignity and control to people, keep money in our community, foster innovation and are more resilient during hard economic times. The other political parties focus on tax cuts and bailouts for big corporations. To do this I will push for rolling back the corporate tax cuts for large businesses and increasing the Employer Health Tax exemption for small businesses with payrolls of less than $5 million.
■ The average daily commute time in the GTA is 80 minutes. Gridlock now costs our economy $6 billion a year in lost productivity. And that doesn’t include the cost of greenhouse gas pollution, which threatens our entire world. To solve transit we need a dedicated transit fund. This fund will be used to build subways, light rail, bicycle paths, etc. As MPP I will work with all parties to implement dedicated revenue tools such as congestion charges, gas taxes and parking fees, to raise the required money to build transit in Toronto.
■ I am currently a small business start-up coach (www.rudkins.ca) who has owned and ran his own businesses for 30 years (Consulting Firms, Resort) and worked in the field of economic development throughout the world. In Canada/Europe I have been a professor/trainer of entrepreneurship and project management in various colleges and universities. I have been the executive director of Green Enterprise Ontario and volunteer as a mentor to new immigrants. My formal education is in business/economics (BA, MBA,) and Green Building technologies.
■ The OMB is broken and it should either be overhauled or scrapped. It is currently a tool of the developers, allowing them to run the planning process in Ontario. In cases where residents or communities try to fight for better decisions, they are often hit with lawsuits to silence them. Planning should be returned to the communities and people of Ontario and should be supported by a strong, professional, planning body at the provincial and municipal levels.

Fort York is Toronto Public Library’s 99th branch >>>from page 1 cornerstone of the community,” said Foderick. The 16,000 square foot library boasts a collection of 35,000 new materials, including books, periodicals and DVDs. There are also views of the city and access to the soon-to-be-created Mouth of the Creek Park on Bathurst Street. Foderick, who is most proud of the way the library was funded – a debt-free $9-million budget – said the branch points to the library’s move toward digital-based media. “We want to stay relevant and push the envelope. Our electronic section is the fastest growing part of the library,” said Foderick. This is the Toronto Public Library’s 99th branch. The 100th branch, at Scarborough City Centre, is set to open in December.

Arts & Crafts Field Trip at Fort York and Garrison Common this weekend Toronto independent music company Arts & Crafts returns to Fort York & Garrison Common with Field Trip June 7 and 8. The event offers 17 food and beverage vendors; an Etsy Marketplace; manicures and an on-site barber shop; Day Camp with youth-friendly activities such as bouncy castles and children’s performances; live art installations; a photography contest and exhibition; a mess hall with a watermelon eating contest or a corn-on-the-cob eating contest; and acts such as Interpol, Broken Social Scene, Constantines, A Tribe Called Red, Chvrches, Gord Downie and The Sadies and more. “It was always going to be a tough task to match the magic and wonder of our first Field Trip, but we’re going for it,” said Jeffrey Remedios, co-founder and president of Arts & Crafts in a release. “Around the festival grounds you’ll find even more awe-

some creative activities, artist collaborations and bespoke vendors. There’s so much to explore and experience that we couldn’t fit it all in one day, so Field Trip is now a weekend-long celebration of our city, our creative communities, our global spirit and our love of music.” Weekend passes are $125, with single-day general admission tickets retailing for $75. Children 12 years old and under are admitted for free with any adult ticket holder, to a maximum of two children per adult. VIP single day passes retail

Youth-focused programming will be featured heavily throughout the weekend. Sealed snacks and bottles of water are allowed, as well are blankets, small backpacks and non-DSLR cameras. Kenya’s Top Safari Spots Maasai Mara National Reserve
Amboseli National Park
The birthplace of the quintessential safari experience, the Mara is famous for its population of big cats and the great wildebeest migration that takes place between July and October.
Amboseli National Park is the best place to catch a glimpse of free-ranging elephants and offers tantalizing views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Be sure to spend some time trekking up Observation Hill, whose peak gives up an incredible overall panoramic view of the park.
Lake Nakuru National Park Nestled into the Great Rift Valley, Lake Nakuru National Park is a bird lover’s mecca where flocks of blushing pink flamingoes are the resident celebrities, and the park also serves as one of the first national rhinoceros sanctuaries.
