Inaugural Dundas West Festival Saturday ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com It is no small feat to shut down 12 city blocks of one of Toronto’s main streets – Dundas West. Helder Ramos, coordinator of the Dundas West Business Improvement Area (BIA), said organizers tried in 2012, but plans didn’t come together.

But they learned a lot of lessons, kept on planning and are now prepared to shut down the street and transform it into a 12-block celebration during the inaugural Dundas West Festival June 8. “A lot of work and a lot of headaches to organize, but we think it is worth it,” Ramos said.

“We decided to do the work to make this what we wanted, which is a celebration of what is here.” A collaboration between the Dundas West BIA and the Little Portugal BIA, Dundas West Fest is billed as an engaging and participatory, car-free celebration of everything local. “Events are what bring people

to the neighbourhood,” Ramos said. “We have done our best to transform Dundas with our murals and plants and that is almost finished. Now it is time to bring people in and show them what we have done.” Dundas Street West will be closed to vehicular traffic and public transit all day between >>>FESTIVAL, page 14

The closure marks an early start on plans to replace the bridge spanning the Lakeshore GO Transit/Metrolinx rail corridor. The century-old bridge had been slated for replacement by 2016, but recent engineering inspections have shown it’s unsafe for vehicles. In the meantime, bicycles and pedestrians will still be able to cross the bridge. Temporary bridge Transportation staff will install a temporary bridge that’s expected to be ready in 18 months. According to city staff, the new bridge, expected to cost $17 million, will have a markedly different form, and be made with more modern materials.

Toronto’s Portugal Day has a long history ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com

ach year, around June 10, Toronto’s Portuguese community takes over Dundas Street West. Between Lansdowne and Trinity Bellwoods Park, they parade waving flags, wearing traditional costumes, singing and dancing. “It is an opportunity for Portuguese immigrants and their descendents to celebrate themselves, to replenish their sense of solidarity and identity and also introduce and display that identity in multiple ways to other Canadians,” explained Gilberto Fernandes, a director with the Portuguese Canadian History Project. But many might not know where this massive celebration of the Portuguese in Canada came from. started in 1910 Fernandes, who is also a PhD student in history at York University, is writing about the history of Portuguese communities in North America. The origins and celebrations of Portugal Day is something that figures greatly into his research. He explained Portugal Day started in that country in 1910 and has been celebrated ever since on June 10. It was introduced by the democratic republican government that was in Portugal at the time, who wanted to secularize the Portuguese community by removing the influence of Catholic religion by, among other things, introducing secular holidays, Fernandes said. “The idea of Portugal Day was to celebrate the nation and they picked that day to coincide with the death of Luis de Camoes, a poet in the 16th Century who shaped much of the Portuguese language and literature. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the dictatorial Estado Novo turned the holiday into what Fernandes called a propagandistic,

ideological and militaristic celebration called ‘Day of Camões, Portugal and the Portuguese Race’. “It was an opportunity for the dictatorship to promote itself in Portugal and abroad,” Fernandes said, adding that the celebrations started to get bigger in Portuguese immigrant communities, including Toronto, which has the largest Portuguese community in Canada. The first Portugal Day commemorations in Toronto were organized in 1966 by Father Alberto Cunha, then the head of the Portuguese parish at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. It had several thousand people congregate in the Canadian National Exhibition Coliseum, now the Ricoh Coliseum. “As the years went by and the political situation changed in Portugal, the regime came to an end in 1974 after the Carnation Revolution, which had

In 1977 the title of the national holiday changed to ‘Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities,’ reflecting the post-imperial government’s commitment to reach out to its Diaspora. “They started celebrating this transnational, borderless nationhood,” he said.

In 1986, the Alliance of Portuguese Clubs and Associations was founded and started to pool resources to plan something bigger and better for Portugal Day. “That organization has since been responsible for organizing the Portugal Day festivities in the Greater Toronto Area,” he said. The commemorations of Portugal Day have grown over the years to become the largest public gatherings of Portuguese immigrants and their descendants in Canada. In Toronto they now include a large program of activities that span the month of June, and are highlighted by the parade of community associations and businesses along Dundas St. West. The city councilor for the area known as Little Portugal, Ana Bailao, said Portugal Day, today, is not just a celebration of the history and heritage of the Portuguese community, but

also of Toronto. “It is about celebrating the history of Toronto,” Bailao said. “These are the communities that came here and made our neighbourhoods that make Toronto a multicultural, diverse city.” Bailao has participated in Portuguese Day festivities for many years as well as having been the director of the organization that plans the festivities for one year. She said the celebrations and significance have changed as the community has matured. “For the first generation there was a huge need to connect to your roots,” she said. “Now it is more a matter of pride and also showcasing to the second generation. It is more about what it is to be a Portuguese Canadian.”

hen it comes time to decide on how we’re represented at city hall – specifically the size and number of wards in the city and how they’re divided – Toronto Council must be open to a variety of ideas. Next week, there’s an Executive Committee report going to Toronto Council on a Ward Boundary Review for the city. Toronto, currently divided into 44 wards, last undertook such a review in 2000. Since then, the wards’ make-ups and populations have changed. A city manager’s report to the executive committee notes “significant discrepancies among Toronto’s ward boundaries that warrant a review.” According to the report, any adjustments undertaken would be in place for the 2018 municipal election. our view Mayor Rob Ford, meanwhile, has made his position clear. In his comments at the Executive Important Committee, Ford said he believes debate needs a 25-member council can do the Noting Toronto is expected to citizen input job. receive three more federal ridings (bringing the total to 25), Ford said it’s an opportune time to consider reducing Toronto Council’s ward allotment from two wards per riding to one. “At the rate we’re going we’re going to have 50 councillors,” Ford warned. “And you see the problems we have with 44 councillors.” There’s no denying the current 45-member size of council (44 councillors plus a mayor) can be unwieldy at times. There is merit to Ford’s argument. But it’s early in the process. We need to hear many voices. Toronto Council will do Torontonians a disservice if it restricts itself – without considering any other factors – when defining new ward boundaries. Doing so may discount a more creative solution – one that gives a more effective voice to Torontonians – before it can be even explored. Figuring out what’s best for a diverse, multicultural city and its 140 neighbourhoods will be more complicated than shoehorning them into some cookie-cutter solution. For Torontonians, this is not only about your representation at city hall. This is about how your neighbourhood fits into the city. This is an important debate that needs your input. As the process moves along, we urge citizens to take advantage of the “broad engagement and public consultation process” referenced in the report.

Media told where it stands at city hall these days We news media are stalkers these days at city hall. We perch outside Mayor Rob Ford’s office, waiting for his noon-hour arrival to demand to know about allegations of smoking crack, cover-ups and staffing changes. Early on in the multiweek stakeout, a woman passing through city hall called a group of us “vultures.” A few days later, the mayor apologized for calling us “maggots.” Can’t say we weren’t told where we stand at city hall these days. In truth, since the story broke of the possible video of the mayor allegedly smoking crack cocaine, the media has mostly been standing in the hall outside the mayor’s office. In refusing to answer the pertinent questions in this story, the mayor has all but invited us in. And we’ve tried to be good house guests. But it’s becoming clear

david nickle the city this short-term standoff with the mayor’s office could warp accountability and accessibility at city hall for years to come. Evading questions Absent his press secretary and communications staff, Mayor Ford has taken to seconding city hall security staff to escort him between his parking garage and office doors. Security has meanwhile made a space to the rear of the mayor’s office, inside the councillors’ secure area, inaccessible to news media who are accredited to enter the space. There’s nothing illegal in doing this – indeed, the press gallery (and full disclosure, I’m serving as president of the gallery) had lost a battle in negotiating new council-

Our view...has been that hard questions asking by professional journalists shouldn’t be flagged as a security concern.

approved security access rules, requiring reporters not to linger in the councillors’ common office area. But the enforcement of the policy is new, and the purpose of that enforcement can only be to allow the mayor and his staff to continue to evade embarrassing questions from reporters – in this case, on a matter of city-wide interest. This is not a new problem, or one endemic to the Ford administration. The city’s security team along with a number of politicians have been looking for ways to restrict and even remove media access to councillors’ office areas

since the mayor David Miller administration. Some councillors were very keen on such a move – often because reporters would, when a politician got into hot water, show up at their office doors with cameras in hand to ask hard questions. Our view then and now has been that hard questions asked by professional journalists shouldn’t be flagged as a security concern. Indeed, using the pretext of security to bar those questions from being asked raises a serious public accountability concern. All of this would be irrelevant, of course, if our elected politicians would come forward and answer the questions put to them. Or if they don’t wish to do so, they relied on their own resources to muddy the water and left the public service out of it.

The king of clubs is an ivy plant, the eight of spades is a puff for cleaning, the three of spades is a hedge trimmer, the six of clubs is a fish statue and the nine of spades is night clothes. After 10 cards he recites them back from memory, drawing up each of the images as he goes. He describes what is happening in his mind as though he is walking through a castle and the things he sees are associated with specific cards. When he needs to recall t h e c a rd s i n o rd e r, h e retraces his steps through his “memory castle”, visualizing the images in the order he saw them. This isn’t an inherent skill,

It is a skill he has developed with work and practice. “It took me five years to be able to memorize a deck in five minutes and recall it in under five minutes,” Luisi said. “When I was a kid, this was my childhood dream. I wanted to be able to do this.” It is a teachable talent that almost anyone can do, Luisi said, adding he is a member of a small club of people who regularly get together at the Toronto Reference Library to practice. In addition, Luisi is the organizer of the Canadian Memory Championship, now in its second year. He said he started to organize the competition as a means for people to go head to head and gain recognition for their talent in the memory sport. “Some people can memorize the order of a whole deck in like 25 seconds,” Luisi said, adding the sport

Alternative to Metrolinx 16-foot noise wall suggested ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com By contrasting a stark barren noise wall against their lush green landscaped plans for linear parks along the rail corridor’s edge, James Brown and Kim Storey painted a picture of what they believed lands along the Kitchener GO line could become. Brown & Storey Architects

made a presentation on May 29 at the Gladstone Hotel, outlining a green alternative to the Metrolinx plan to build 16-feet-high concrete noise walls through the communities along the rail corridor including Parkdale, Roncesvalles Village and the Junction. Brown & Storey’s plan uses trees, green walls, pathways, bridges and community

nodes to both buffer the community from the noise of the trains and to create a linear park along the tracks. According to the architects, the new rail link doesn’t need to be treated as something that needs to be separated as much as possible in a virtual tunnel. “Rather the rail link should be seen as a positive attribute that can re-invigorate

and increase pedestrian and cycling networks, be a catalyst for the reconnection of historically separated neighbourhoods for Toronto residents, and ultimately become a new international gateway for Pan Am guests and all future visitors. “It is not just about the communities on the inside but people coming from all over the world,” Storey said. “We are loosing an opportunity to brand our city in a really positive way.” The architects, who were commissioned to make the designs by the Junction Triangle Rail Committee and the Wabash Building Society, are proposing that Metrolinx plant 10,000 trees along the rail corridor, phase in building anything along the corridor in order to see what is actually necessary and desired by the community and assign separate budgets to each of the eight communities who share boundaries with the corridor to develop their own unique approaches and green

ing in uncommon books and paper artifacts, Fowler has organized a crafting homage to paper. Collage party With some unsellable paper from his store, Fowler has organized a “Collage Party” in collaboration with his neighbour, Le Gallery at 1183 Dundas St W.

“They (paper and books) are full of interesting illustrations that people might be able to cut up and make something with,” Fowler said. “It is a last chance for some of these items, so why not let people make something beautiful out of it.” Artists who have volunteered to help out will man the tables and the collages will be displayed in a pop-up street gallery in the area. Another event, “Shirley Street Fan Mail”, is being organized by Sarah McPhail, an artist and area parent. A community-building exercise, McPhail said people are invited to pen a piece of fan mail to local businesses, neighbours and friends in the neighbourhood.

“People will come, write their fan mail and grab some mail to deliver,” McPhail said. “It might lead to them visiting places they haven’t.” Shirley Street Fan Mail will be set up at the St. Clarens Parkette, 1717 Dundas St. W., and the mail people choose to deliver will be anywhere along Dundas Street. The handdelivered messages, McPhail said, will no doubt bring a bit of joy to the writer, delivery person and recipient. “People derive pleasure out of making other people happy,” McPhail said. “We forget to tell people how much we care.” Taking it to the street Full of Beans Coffee House and Roastery, 1348 Dundas St. W., is a regular community animator with readings, comedy shows and book sharing, but Lori Nytko said they will take their programming to the street. From noon to 2 p.m., they

will host a special edition of the bi-monthly Brockton Writers Series with authors Jasjit Sangha, Carrianne Leung, Jessica Moore and Alex Cafarelli. From 3 to 4 p.m., musical guest Gary Black will entertain, followed by Eunice Keitan from 5 to 6 p.m. Beginning at 6:45 p.m., there will be the Spillin’ the Beans Comedy show with hosts Rene Armando Payes and Jennifer Macauliffe. During the festival, which runs from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. June 8, Brock Avenue, Dufferin Street and Dovercourt Road will remain open. Ramos said the event has been organized to minimize the impact on residents, who will still be able to get in and out of the neighbourhood by car through their alleys and north-south roads. June Callwood Park

Staff photo/MARY GAUDET

Janet Kennish, president of the Garden Club of Toronto, announces the groundbreaking for the June Callwood Park, 636 Fleet St., on Tuesday. The park celebrates Callwood’s life, dedicated to journalism, social activism and feminism, and will include spaces for play and contemplation in the growing community. It is expected to open in the spring of 2014.

Toronto Concert Orchestra performs for dogs - and their people - at Echo Beach ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com The conductor of the Toronto Concert Orchestra said they have done some off-thebeaten-path performances including playing on the floor of the Design Exchange, at the Windsor Arms Hotel and Phoenix Concert Theatre, but nothing quite like their upcoming show. On Saturday the orchestra will perform a concert tailored to a unique audience – dogs – at The Iams SO GOOD! Doggie Jam. Kerry Stratton has conducted orchestras in Europe, North America and Asia, but this is the first time he will conduct musicians before an audience of as many as 5,000 dogs. “This is a first for North America,” Stratton said. It isn’t music with a certain tone or pitch, but rather the content of the music that makes it so dog friendly.

The repertoire for the evening includes songs such as Hound Dog, (How Much Is) That Doggie in the Window and Who Let the Dogs Out? In addition, they will perform a Wagner Overture and music from Star Wars. “What it is, is basically a pleasant open air concert for a June night,” Stratton said. “It is meant for families to enjoy and for people who the dog is a part of the family, this is the concert to bring them to.” The pets may bark and howl, but Stratton said that just means his audience is reacting and that is what every performer wants.

Tickets are $11.90 and can be purchased at Ticketmaster. com

i

“It is about time classical music took a break from the stained glass approach and people actually enjoyed going to a concert,” Stratton said. The concert takes place Saturday, June 8 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Echo Beach, 999 Lake Shore Blvd. W. Also at the event will be an Ask the Vet booth for pethealth-related questions, sampling of Iams, doggie swag bags and a dog-friendly photo booth. “I hope people will come, take it in the spirit that it is given and who knows, maybe we can make it an annual event,” Stratton said.

Now you can recycle more plastic stuff – like fruit and vegetable containers, clear takeout containers, molded bakery trays, plastic egg cartons, disposable plastic plates and cups, empty CD cases and more. Metrolinx planning more public meetings on controversial electrification of air-rail link More public meetings are planned by Metrolinx on the progress of future electrification of the Union Pearson Express air rail link. Both the provincial transit planning agency and the Ministry of Transportation have pledged to convert the link running along the GO Kitchener rail corridor from diesel to electric, but only after the express service between Pearson

International Airport and Union Station is completed in 2015. While no firm confirmation has been given for a completion date for the conversion, Metrolinx has indicated it would like to electrify by 2017 and is conducting an environmental assessment to be completed next year. Four meetings are planned to update residents on the EA and address concerns

about the controversial project, which has seen vigorous opposition from West Toronto advocacy groups such as the Clean Train Coalition. The first meeting was held Tuesday, June 4 at Toronto Pearson International Airport, and the next three are slated as follows: • Monday, June 10 at Metro Hall, Room 314, 55 John St., 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
