HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com More than 50 Fort York area residents came out to protest a development at 65 Grand Magazine Street that includes a 32-storey condominium and an attached residential building up to six storeys. “We don’t want it,” said
Rhonda Farrell Lloyd, a resident of 600 Fleet St., and a director on the building’s condo board. “It was supposed to be 19 storeys and now they want 32? We don’t want it.” All the residents in attendance at the Monday meeting echoed Farrell Lloyd’s reaction, with many telling those representing the developer, Onni,
flat out that this building is too high and will ruin the lives of the residents surrounding the new building. Many had questioned the reasoning for nearly doubling the height and asked those representing the developer what the benefits were to the community for the increase, but they refused to answer.
The proposal brought to the community at the meeting held at the Fort York Visitor Centre, 250 Fort York Blvd., showed a 32-storey building with town homes at the base of a fourstorey residential building to the south side that increases to six-storeys on the north side. By as early as September 2017, two Ossington Village Catholic elementary schools will be merging to form one. The Allocation Resource Committee (ARC), made up of parents, teachers, school officials and the local trustee, unanimously agreed at the fourth school accommodation review community meeting, held at St. Luke’s Catholic Elementary school June 10, that St. Luke Catholic Elementary and Senhor Santo Cristo (SSC) Catholic Elementary Schools would amalgamate to become a new school with a new name. The meeting was scheduled to be the final community meeting with an official vote to be held about which school will be the new home to students. However, that vote was deferred to a fifth meeting scheduled for Sept. 28. “The parent community didn’t want to (have a vote) at this point,” said Jim Saraco, the superintendent of education for Area 5, which include both St. Luke and SSC. “They weren’t ready and we wanted to honour that because it’s very tough for them so we have to just feel the vibe from parents. In the future, how should the City’s waste be managed? How should we manage our remaining garbage even after reuse, recycling, and composting? The City is developing a Long Term Waste Management Strategy for Toronto that will provide a framework for solid waste management policy decision over the next 30 to 50 years. Our goal is to find solutions that are cost-effective, socially acceptable, and environmentally sustainable.

Vancouver-based artist Geoffrey Farmer’s latest art installation ‘Look in my face; my name is Might-have-been; I am also No-more, Too-late, Farewell’.
Trinity Bellwoods Park home to unique Luminato art installation HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com After four years of work, critically acclaimed Vancouverbased artist Geoffrey Farmer is ready to share his latest art installation and Torontonians in the West Queen West neighbourhood will be the first to experience it. Titled Look in my face; my name is Might-have-been; I am also No-more, Too-late, Farewell, it will be screened outdoors at Trinity Bellwoods Park and consists of more than 16,000 discarded images collected from Farmer’s personal collection, the Vancouver Public Library, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and other resources. “I thought it would be interesting to see how it would work as a public sculpture because I always thought of wanting to show the world through images...” Farmer told The Villager from his Vancouver home. “I envision it as a fountain of images bubbling up for the public to see.” Farmer, along with artist and programmer Brady Marks, sorted through all the images that were discarded, some of which had been in a filing cabinet for 60 years, scanned them and cropped them to a 4:3 ratio. Each image was given a descrip-

tive tag on the computer to allow them to be grouped together. Some categories are as general as children or as specific as a predominant colour. The artwork will be showcased in collaboration with the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) and the ninth annual Luminato Festival, a city-wide multi-arts festival that offers hundreds of events from June 19 to 28 celebrating theatre, dance, music, literature, visual arts and more. Known for his large-scale installation-based artwork that involves the transformation of found material, Farmer is stepping out of his comfort zone to present his first major film work to date. Farmer has exhibited his works around the world during his career, including at theTate Modern gallery in London, the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco and the AGO in Toronto as well as at dOCUMENTA 13 in Kassel, Germany and the Istanbul Biennial festival. According to the artist, the culled images in park will cycle through its assigned
categories that were chosen at random and will run 24 hours a day. It will also have an audio component to add another layer to the sensory experience. The images will be shown on a large LED screen that will look as if it’s hovering above the ground, said Farmer, with speakers sprinkled around nearby. According to Farmer, the images will never be shown the same way twice and as a result is constantly rearranging and constructing new narratives for the audience. This was done purposely so the audience would draw their own narrative from the groupings, thus creating a different experience and story for each viewer. “When the sound and the image come together something happens. And because we’re geared to create narratives, what happens is the viewer begins to sense there’s a narrative there and create their own,” he said. “There is some kind of association between the narratives, but the viewers are creating the meaning and bringing that meaning to the piece.”

T
he popular Scotiabank CHIN International Picnic is going back to its roots as it honours its founder, the late Johnny Lombardi, by moving the festivities to College Street, the heart of Little Italy. “It’s connected to the celebration of my dad’s centennial year,” said Lenny Lombardi. “He was born in 1915 and would have been 100 years old this year, so we wanted to do something special to commemorate 100 years of Johnny Lombardi.” This is the first date and location change since the picnic’s inception 32 years ago. Usually the festivities take place over the Exhibition Place grounds on the Canada Day long weekend, however, this year it will take over College Street from Shaw to Bathurst streets. It has also moved up its date to coincide with the Taste of Little Italy as well as Father’s Day weekend this year from June 19 to 21. “It’s a wonderful coincidence that it happened to fall on Father’s Day weekend,” said Lombardi, who added the shift to College Street was not related to the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. “It would have been challenging, but that wasn’t the

motivation. It was really the 100 years of Johnny and I thought to really bring it home by bringing it back to his neighbourhood.” According to Lombardi, there were “so many reasons to bring it back,” but the history and legacy his father left behind in the neighbourhood was the main one. “He was raised in this neighbourhood. The entire Lombardi family was raised here. I still live here. It’s home for the Lombardi family.” Dubbed the pioneer of multicultural broadcasting in Canada, Johnny used the second floor of the supermarket he owned and ran on College Street as the first station for CHIN Radio in 1966 and CHIN-FM in 1967. A year later, the radio station was broadcasting in 32 languages at 60 hours per week with Italian programming dominating the airwaves. “He really was the spiritual leader of multiculturalism in the media. He had a great impact on the city and how the city grew up embracing this whole nation,” Lombardi said. “We looked at this opportunity as a way to bring a little focus to his accomplish-
ments throughout his career, especially in broadcasting because all his great ideas were born here.” Lombardi said there’s a piazza in his name at Grace and College streets with a statue of Johnny sitting on a concrete bench, while the City of Toronto also officially named a portion of College between Clinton and Grace streets Johnny Lombardi Way. Regular attendees of the event can still expect the CHIN Picnic staples such as the bikini pageant and multicultural food, with the added bonus of Italian flavour with the Taste of Little Italy and the Rising Star singing competition. To commemorate Johnny’s impact, the radio station at 632 College St. will transform the building’s lobby into an audio and visual exhibit that highlights Johnny’s accomplishments and iconic words and contributions to the city. “He had a very strong connection to this neighbourhood. He never left,” Lombardi said. For more information visit www.scotiabankchinpicnic.com

We’re shining the spotlight on good, quality journalism Information overload is one of the defining characteristics of this generation. There’s so much of it everywhere, and often it’s unsolicited and uninformed, which makes distinguishing the truth from the fiction a difficult task. When content is packaged similarly, or arrives to you en-masse at rapid speed, how do you discover the information that will help you become better informed, versus the content that may lead you astray? There’s an effort underway to shine a light on quality information where journalism is concerned. Dubbed ‘JournalismIS’, the campaign aims to promote professional journalism and all that it stands for: reliability, accuracy and accountability. Starting soon you’ll see advertisements in The Parkdale Villager and other newspapers, on television and online touting the benefits of good journalism. We’re great at telling other people’s stories – we’re trained to do so and committed to that objective – but as journalists we’re not great at telling our own stories and promoting what we do. That’s why the team at The Villager and all Metroland newspapers in Ontario have joined forces with other major news outlets, media associations, unions and journalism schools to support the JournalismIS campaign. The volume of today’s information and range of opinion challenges the very nature of our industry, so we need to support one another in preserving and promoting the work we do. We need to demonstrate the power behind good journalism in engaging the public and – particularly where community news is concerned – fostering a stronger connection between individuals and the neighbourhoods in which they live. “News is the lifeblood of democracy,” said Mary Agnes Walsh, campaign spokesperson and Winnipeg Free Press reporter at the JournalismIS launch in Toronto last week. “Our campaign is aimed at initiating a wider conversation about the value of journalism and what we all need to do to support a robust journalistic culture in Canadian society.” So in the spirit of sparking that conversation, we invite our readers to tell us what they look for in good journalism. Does that come across in the pages of The Parkdale Villager and online at www.parkdalevillager.com? Where would you make suggestions for improvement? Our news team holds firm to its position of objectivity, but we also remain accountable to those we serve – and that’s you, our reader. Email us your thoughts to press@insidetoronto.com

Provincial Liberals to learn same lesson on carding that Mayor John Tory did? Maybe those holding power in this city and this province want to eventually stamp out the odious practise of carding by police and maybe they don’t. But if they do, a word of advice: it’s hard to stamp something out walking tip-toe. That seems to be what the provincial government had in mind this week when it sent Community Safety Minister Yasir Naqvi out to announce new regulations this fall to govern police when they stop and question members of the public not suspected of a crime. The regulation isn’t a ban of the investigative practice that has been shown to disproportionately target young men of colour in Toronto, and Naqvi made that clear when he announced it on Tuesday. The regulations, yet
david nickle the city unreleased, will simply require that stops by police not be arbitrary. It isn’t going over any better with community groups than the policy approved earlier this year at the Toronto Police Services Board, a policy that amounted to little more than guidelines. Today Mayor John Tory will make a forthright attempt to stop carding once and for all, bringing a motion to the Toronto Police Services Board along with a mea culpa, for supporting the policy to begin with this spring. It’s a position Tory was shamed into taking by a gathering of highly influential Torontonians and a seminal essay by Toronto
journalist Desmond Cole describing in detail the indignity and traumatizing effect of the practice. Learning a lesson It’s a wonder the provincial government isn’t taking a lesson from Tory’s experience and matching his newfound disdain. It’s true police value carding as an intelligencegathering strategy. The information gleaned may well contribute to ongoing investigations or simply give police a better map of the communities they’re assigned to protect. But one wonders at the intensity of the defence of the practise by Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders and his predecessor Bill Blair. Crime rates have been declining for years in Toronto and it is unlikely
that police enforcement, or lack thereof, has had as much to do with that as have simple demographic shifts. At the same time, there’s a wider context emerging, as evidence emerges that police across North America are engaging in sometimes quite odious acts of racial profiling and violence toward people of colour. Holding all that in balance, it is perplexing to see political leadership indulge the digging-of-heels that persists in policing ranks. Tory learned the folly of that, but he had to be taught. The provincial Liberals, having seen that example play out at their doorstep, seem bound to learn that lesson themselves.

Bobby Rice says career in music was his destiny Jazz band set to perform at Nathan Phillips Square during Jazz festival LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Roncesvalles musician Bobby Rice, who has played with the likes of Shania Twain, Frankie Vali and the late Dick Clark, tells his students, ‘You don’t choose music; it chooses you.’ That’s how the composerarranger-trumpeter-educatorpianist knew a musical career was for him – it was all he could do not to play. “I sort of knew all I wanted to do was be involved in music. It’s the only thing I wanted to do,” Rice told The Villager. Rice, whose seven-piece Latin jazz group has performed at almost every major jazz festival in the province, will be a part of this year’s TD Toronto Jazz Festival. The annual event, which can be credited for presenting some of the biggest names in jazz, kicks off this month from Thursday, June 18 until Monday, June 29. Attracting as many as 500,000 audience members, the festival will see 1,500 musicians performing in

350-plus concerts in just 12 days. The Bobby Rice Latin Jazz Big Band performs Friday, June 26 at 12:30 p.m. at Nathan Phillips Square. The midday concert is free, and will likely attract those out on lunch, Rice said, or college and high school students, who are finished
school. Rice, who currently teaches at Humber College, started playing the trumpet at 14 years of age in a beginner band. “Teaching for me has always been natural,” he said. “I remember in Grade 11, they let me run the junior stage band. It seemed quite natural. I got hired at Humber College in my early 20s.” Rice does most of his composing on the piano and most of his performing on the trumpet. He got the chance to work with such singers as Twain, before she was known as Shania, at the Deerhurst Inn. “I worked with her six days a week,” he said. “I knew her brothers.” Rice played with Vali in a Legends of Rock ‘n Roll show at the SkyDome, which is now the Rogers Centre. “He was a really nice guy,” recalled Rice, who said few people know that Vali’s first instrument was the trumpet. When he had the opportunity to work with Clark, Rice said he was shocked to find out just how ner-
vous he was. It wasn’t performance jitters, not about the size of the audience, but about wanting to “get everything right,” Rice said. A Sterling Road resident, Rice’s new album, Bobby Rice Latin Jazz Big Band: X-Treme Latin Jazz, received a Juno nomination. Rice holds a master of arts degree in composition to complement his bachelor of arts in jazz studies and Humber College music diploma, and is the recipient of four arts grants for composition and recording from the Ontario Arts Council and the Toronto Arts Council respectively. He also won Best Canadian Composition at the 2006 Music Aid International Music Awards. To find out more, visit www.bobbyrice.com and www.torontojazz. com

Street safety initiative launched LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com As an E-Bike rider, Davenportarea resident Donna Cowan has personally experienced aggression and carelessness on Toronto streets. And it isn’t caused by just one group of culprits, but all road users: drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. The consequences of this anger and frustration, Cowan pointed out, are dire. The city’s traffic fatalities reached a 10-year high in 2013, at 63 – more than the number of homicides, which was 56 that year. Cowan set out to do something about the problem and reached out to Liz Sutherland of Cycle T.O.’s Ward 18 group for help. The result is the just-launched Street Safety Initiative by the Street Safety Coalition, comprised of west-end Cycle Toronto ward groups (13, 14, and 18) and the DIGIN community group. “It’s taken a long time, but
here we are,” Cowan told The Villager of the Street Safety Initiative that launched Tuesday, June 2. It was two summers ago that Cowan and Sutherland connected. It was then that Cowan had begun riding her electric bike to work. In doing so, she quickly saw the hostility that emanated from road users. “I was just appalled by the anger on the streets. It was just terrible,” Cowan recalled. This was during the Rob Ford Era, she said, when the war on cars was so prevalent. “I was expecting cars to be the bad guy, but the cars seemed to be behaving themselves because they had rules. It was the bikes – they’d go whizzing through stop lights or cutting through stop signs on side streets,” Cowan said. “Pedestrians would jut out in front of cyclists at streetcar stops. People would say things to me aggressively –
even though E-bikes were allowed to be in bike lanes.” What does one do when he or she is faced with the overcrowded subway system and the cost of parking downtown, Cowan asked. “You take to the streets. But, there’s an energy of ‘I’ve got to get there.’ An urgency,” she said. “I thought, ‘what do we do?’ Let’s start with the attitudes and behaviours.” Many people know the rules of the road and follow them; others disregard them while “some don’t even have a clue what the rules are.” That’s why the Street Safety Initiative exists. Its goal is to connect community groups to deliver a public education and outreach campaign to promote the message of ‘Vision Zero.’ “Traffic collisions are not inevitable, and if individuals make minor changes to their habits, they could save a life,” the initiative states. The campaign is constructed around a website
and in-person outreach to the public and particularly new drivers. The website includes key messages as well as public awareness tools that alert people to disrespectful street behaviours, like aggressive and distracted driving, cyclists or anyone else running red lights, or crossing the street while texting. “We’ll be at street festivals handing out buttons, encouraging parents to talk to their children about safe road use,” Cowan said. “In the fall, we’ll reach out to schools and community groups, to make presentations, to get people talking about how their actions affect everyone.” The website will be updated regularly. Cowan is encouraging everyone to open up the conversation beyond immediate friend groups that are already like-minded.

>>>from page 1 would have told us.” The decision to amalgamate the two schools will now give the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) access to a portion of the Ministry of Education’s $750-million School Consolidation Capital Program. Access to those funds will allow for retro-fitting and upgrades of the chosen school, which could help boost future enrollment numbers. According to Saraco, it’s still too early to know what the price tag of the retrofit will be, especially since they haven’t chosen the school students will be using. “I have no clue what it will cost, but I’m telling you it’s not going to be cheap. To build a new elementary school can cost $12 million,” Saraco said. “To retrofit might cost a million, a million and a half depending on all the things we can do. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was. It’s a pretty decent deal as opposed to spending $12 million, but
again it depends on the location and what’s reasonable and doable.” Both schools are suffering from low enrollment numbers. St. Luke is operating at a 40 per cent capacity, while SSC is operating at 20 per cent. When consolidated, the student population would be 300, but would still be under the 85 per cent utilization rate. Therefore a boost in program could attract more students in the area. With that in mind, the committee led a discussion with members and parents about the types of upgrades it would like to see regarding programming and in the facility. Committee members suggested: • a chapel space for students to pray and have a quiet space; • a before- and after-school daycare program to help attract young families; • a new LED sign that informs the community about what’s happening in the school and what’s offered;
• French Immersion programming; • designated space that’s not a gym with more equipment; • and a soothing quiet space for special needs children. Parents suggested a designated lunch space for students as well as a lunch program, an increased focus on athletics as well as the arts and a focus on computer technology, such as animation, graphics and programming. Fr. Conrad Fernandes of the local parish, who is part of the ARC committee, suggested a community building exercise for the students by creating a founding members wall, with all the signatures of the first group of students to use the consolidated school. “It’ll go a long way to getting rid of the us versus them mentality so it’s no longer ‘we were St. Luke, we were Senhor Santo Cristo’. It’s now we are.”

Media groups join forces to promote professional journalism GRACE PEACOCK gpeacock@insidetoronto.com
“Metroland employs about 500 professional journalists – we’re a significant part of the journalism world. And if Metroland isn’t providing a forum for the community, investigating stories and providing information, nobody else is doing it.” Toronto Star reporter Chantal Hébert said she hopes the campaign sparks a conversation among the public about the role journalists play in shedding light on important issues, but also in driving public engagement. “I believe a better informed public will come to better informed decisions, but more importantly, a well informed public is one that will be more engaged – which is even more important than whether you think a decision is well informed or not.” For more information visit www.journalismIS.ca or follow the Twitter #journalismis to become part of the conversation.

The building itself will be bordered by public streets on all sides, with Bruyeres Mews to the north, Iannuzzi Street to the east, Sloping Sky Mews to the south and Grand Magazine Street to the west. The site is currently used as a sales office and parking area. The development is surrounded by already established condos with a 15-storey building to the north; a 17-storey and 15-storey condo to the west; a 28-storey condo to the south with three-storey town homes and an 11-storey building attached; and a 28-and 15-storey mixed-used building to the east. The condo will have 511 residential units, divided into 343 one-bedroom units, 29 bachelor units, 79 two-bedroom units and 60 three-bedroom units. There will be four levels of underground parking with 420 parking spaces and
ate area. The entrance to the parking will be on the north side on Bruyeres Mews, which residents were not thrilled with. Many complained of the already heavy traffic in the area and that a development with this many floors will only add to the congestion. Not surprised Image/COURTESY
Many Fort York area residents are frustrated with development proposal at 65 Grand Magazine St., that includes a 32-storey condominium and an attached residential building up to six storeys.
513 bike parking spaces split between the ground level and the first level of underground parking. The condo will surround a small courtyard with some green space that can be used by residents in the new building. There will also be no retail space on the ground floors, which upset many residents who feel there are no options for shopping in the immedi-
Ward 19 councillor Mike Layton was in attendance Monday night, and told The Villager he’s not surprised the community is upset about the proposal and voiced that disapproval forcefully at the meeting. “I don’t blame them. With no retail and just additional height...A jump up to that height is too much and it’s out of character,” Layton said. The city and the applicant will be meeting in the coming weeks to discuss the issues and things they’d like to see changed in the proposal. If no middle ground is reached, the Fort York community could see the issue going to the Ontario Municipal Board.

A coalition of media outlets, associations, unions and journalism schools are banding together in a marketing campaign to spread the message that professional journalism just can’t be beat. Pegged ‘JournalismIS,’ the campaign is backed by Metroland Media Group, the publisher of this paper, and will feature newspaper, television and online advocacy ads touting the value of professional journalism. “Our starting point for this was a general worry that journalists weren’t doing enough to tell their own stories,” said campaign spokesperson Mary Anges Welch at the launch last Friday at the Ryerson School of Journalism in Toronto. The former president of the Canadian Association of Journalists and reporter for the Winnipeg Free Press said: “We’re not talking enough
about the contribution we make nationally, but also on the local level to Canadian public life. We’re not talking about the value of an independent, reliable, ethical, impartial journalistic culture in Canada.” The advertisements, which began to appear across news outlets Saturday, June 13, for the next four months, aim to rally the journalism community to increase awareness, recognition and support for professional journalism. Ian Oliver, president of Metroland Media Group, agreed the media does a great job telling other people’s stories, but not so much their own. And having professional journalists at the grassroots level is just important as covering stories on a national level, he said. “Many people overlook the importance of community journalism. I think we’re the fabric of the community,” Oliver said in an interview.
