It’s a show about resistance: a powerful and pervasive theme woven in the personal stories of many Aboriginals. But this time, it’s demonstrated in multiple artistic works, all by Aboriginal youth. Eight First Nations and Métis students will showcase their work Thursday, June 26 in a gallery show titled Between Tradition & Concrete: Indigenizing Resistance through Art in partnership with Ontario College of Art & Design’s (OCAD) Indigenous Visual Culture Program. It was this theme that 15-year-old Hawk Mason wrestled through when creating his piece, a textured photo collage and poem depicting an iconic handbell in front of a chalkboard. “When I look at it, I think of everybody who went through residential schools and the trauma that has been passed down through generations,” said Mason, an aspiring multimedia artist. The beliefs and teachings of the Mohawk nation, he said, have become second nature to him and are inherently reflected >>>art, page 5

ACCORDING TO CENSUS data, Trinity-Spadina was home to 144,733 residents in 2011. The riding is bounded roughly by Ossington Avenue to the west, Avenue Road and Victoria Street to the east, Dupont Street to the north and Lake Ontario (including Toronto Island) to the south. The riding was created in 1988 from the former ridings Trinity, Spadina, Toronto Centre-Rosedale, and Parkdale-High Park. New Democrat Olivia Chow represented the riding since 2006 before resigning to run for Mayor of Toronto in the 2014 Municipal Election. Prior to Chow, the riding was held by Liberal Tony Ianno.

What local issue do you plan to champion if elected to represent the residents of TrinitySpadina?

2

What will you strive to do with regard to affordable housing in the riding?

3

What role do you feel the federal government should play with regard to funding and supporting cities?

4

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

■ Climate change is the defining

■ I’ve learned from my wife Nina, who runs a women’s shelter, that building affordable housing and maintaining what we’ve got is essential for strengthening our cities. With so many Canadians living from paycheque to paycheque, I’m eager to carry on Jack (Layton) and Olivia’s (Chow) work on the issue. We haven’t had a National Housing Strategy in Canada since the federal Liberals scrapped it. With 1.5 million people in urgent need of housing, it’s time for a truly progressive NDP federal government to take action now.

■ I’ve been campaigning for better transit and sustainable development for years. We’ve got to get cities moving again. Gridlock is costing Toronto $6 billion per year. The federal government must ensure stable, long-term funding for transit and infrastructure, and consecutive Liberal and Conservative governments have failed Canadian cities. The NDP has been calling for a national transit strategy for years now, and reintroducing this legislation is the first thing I intend to do when I get elected.

■ I grew up in Trinity-Spadina. My

■ I plan to be a champion for lower

taxes for the people of Trinity-Spadina. I want to give back more of what you earn. Since 2006, our Conservative government, under the strong, stable leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, has lowered taxes over 150 times, saving the average family nearly $3400 per year. I’m proud that our Conservatives have put nearly $30 billion in tax relief back into the pockets of hard working Canadian families.

■ Our Conservative government understands that having a safe and affordable place to call home is important to Canadian families and their communities. Together with our partners, we have provided support to close to 880,000 families with access to affordable housing. Not only that, but we also committed a further $1.25 billion toward the renewal of the Investment in Affordable Housing. That’s strong action, unlike the Liberals and NDP who would prefer to sit around and talk strategy.

■ I know our cities need infrastructure support. That’s why our Conservative government introduced the New Building Canada Fund, which set aside $53 billion for infrastructure projects across Canada. We’ve come a long way since the previous Liberal government – Conservatives have tripled the average annual federal funding for provincial, territorial and municipal infrastructure and Ontario will receive nearly $11 billion in dedicated federal funding.

■ I was born and raised in the old

■ We are one of the most urban nations in the world, yet our government barely has a presence in Canadian cities. For almost 20 years I have worked with former mayors to advance the cause of cities. I have worked with urban thinkers to make the case for cities. Our cities need robust and stable funding. The federal government must trust local government and make sure the funding delivers local results quickly.

■ I have a lifelong connection to Trinity-Spadina. I went to school in the Annex, I’ve run a restaurant on Harbord and now watch my son play hockey at Bill Bolton Arena. For close to 20 years I lived and worked in the Entertainment District as a journalist at the CBC and Citytv. I’m now a father of two living in the Trinity-Bellwoods community. For the last eight years, I have represented Trinity-Spadina at city hall.

issue of our generation. With the recent flooding and ice storms, Torontonians have felt its impacts right here at home. The NDP has a vision to transition Canada toward renewable and clean energy and build Canada’s 21st century economy. While the Liberal leader has lobbied for Keystone XL in Washington, the NDP is the only party fighting Harper’s agenda every day in the House of Commons and across Canada.

urban agenda that sees the federal government partnering with cities to provide stable and substantial support for housing, transit, the arts and water infrastructure. Continue to protect the vision for a clean, green waterfront – no jets and reforming the Port Authority. We must also designate the island bird sanctuary, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by creating jobs and transforming cities into centres of environmental excellence while making them more resilient.

plain about a lack of support from senior levels of government, I got elected on a promise to build new housing. Since being elected, we’ve revitalized more than 650 affordable housing units; created 30,000 square feet of culture space; built new supportive housing and affordable rental housing for workers; established a capital repair budget for public housing; and saved Alexandra Park Co-Op. We need to use federal leadership to accelerate these ideas.

wife and I rent a place on Albany Avenue. I got involved in politics because of values that I will never waver on: social justice, equality and peace. Those values have guided me in my volunteer and professional life as a senior advisor at the Stephen Lewis Foundation, fighting HIV-AIDS in Africa. I co-founded the I Heart Public Transit campaign with Olivia Chow. I’m now running to continue Olivia’s work in Parliament.

City of Toronto. My childhood was spent in the Annex, living at Spadina and Lowther. After college and grad school in the States, I returned for professional school at U of T. I came by my politics through my studies – I focused on 19th century Russian literature and intellectual history, and it gave me an appreciation for our Canadian political system, democracy and freedom.

Much to celebrate this Canada Day

Write us

T

orontonians have much to celebrate on Canada Day. We have a front row seat when it comes to witnessing the amazing cultural diversity on display in our communities. For example, there’s the ongoing World Cup of Soccer, where teams from 32 countries (each with an identifiable fan base in the city), are competing for the privilege of being crowned world champion. You can see the flags flying from homes, businesses and vehicles. You can see people gathered around televisions to watch the games. And you can definitely see and hear the jubilant celebrations when a team secures victory. Canada is a nation of immigrants. And nowhere else is this country’s diversity as visible as it is in Toronto, where nearly half of the population first learned a language other than English at home. We went to a citizenship cerour view emony and got the perspective of a number of new Canadians, North York’s Clive New citizens including Townsend, who spoke of the “privilege” citizenship granted strengthen him. Toronto In this country, we have much to be thankful for. Rights that we normally take for granted can be harder to secure elsewhere. So in honour of Canada Day, we’d like to throw out a couple of challenges. To the new Canadian: in the coming months, make an effort to find out more about your new community and city and all it has to offer. The summer season is a wonderful time to do this. There are plenty of places, such as the Royal Ontario Museum, the Ontario Science Centre, the CN Tower or Fort York, to visit and get a sense of the community’s history and characteristics. To the more deeply rooted Torontonian: use your time this summer to attend a couple of cultural events with a goal of finding out more about that particular culture and what it brings to our city. Again, there are plenty of options to choose from, including such festivals as Salsa on St. Clair, Taste of the Danforth, and Scotiabank Caribana. What better way to evolve as a community? As newer immigrants become more comfortable in their new home, and the more deeply-rooted citizens gain a greater understanding of the diverse cultures that make up this city, one of Toronto’s strengths – its multiculturalism – will get even stronger. Happy Canada Day, everyone.

Ideas can lose steam in long mayoral races

R

eally, it is a good thing for a city, every three to four years to have a good long mayoral race. And not just because it’s healthy to change things at the top every once in awhile. Particularly in Toronto’s 10-month marathons, it lets us air out some novel and occasionally useful and far-fetched ideas on how the city ought to be shaped. Often these ideas come from the darnedest places, and that is where they stay. In 2010, for instance, Rocco Rossi suggested Toronto should have a mechanism for recalling a bad mayor. That was an idea before its time – Rossi didn’t even make it to voting day, his support was so low – but there are probably a bindingpetitions-worth of people in Toronto right now who wish they had something like that over the past year. This year, mayoral

david nickle the city candidate David Soknacki is on his way to fulfilling that role. Consistently low in public opinion polls, the former city councillor from Scarborough has been leading when it comes to ideas. His first big idea, to scrap the Scarborough subway and build an LRT in its place, was soon picked up by Olivia Chow. His latest, to ban onstreet parking on arterial roads in the downtown core, hasn’t yet been picked up by anyone. It’s too bad, because the ban would probably do more to make on-road transportation faster and safer than any number of relief subway lines – or at least the decade of debates and environmental assessments preceding their construction.

Often these ideas come from the darnedest places, and that is where they stay

Bike lanes wouldn’t be the impediment to car traffic that they are now, because they wouldn’t have to deke around onstreet parking spaces and into car lanes. Where bike lanes weren’t appropriate, cars would have at least two lanes in a direction to move, and that would go the same for buses, which might be increased. And pedestrians, not well known for adhering to crosswalks and traffic lights, would have a safer time crossing mid-block than they do lurching out into traffic from between parked cars. It would also tick off numerous small busi-

nesses, and a certain number of motorists who’ve gotten used to parking on the streets and don’t like the multilevel parking garages that Soknacki envisions to replace street parking. And those, at least in a mayoral race, are two sleeping bears that no candidate wants to poke. That is why it takes a candidate like Soknacki – who at this point, has no car-commuter, small-business support to lose – to bring the notion forward. It’s a good gamble on his part. If the idea catches on with enough other factions in our balkanized electorate, Soknacki could gain enough support to give him a shot at the prize. And if not, it is a good, radical idea, of the sort that the more established candidates don’t go near.

Art show brings knowledge, understanding

PARKDALE IN BRIEF

>>>from page 1 in his work. But creating the piece took its emotional toll, said Mason, who grew up hearing first-hand accounts of abuse. “I was just dealing with the weight of it all,” he said. For 17-year-old Ojibwe Josh Bluebird, his art came through personal struggles with the current school system. He began taking photographs at different angles and one photo of safety window bars, paralleled the “prison” feelings he had in his former school. His move from a First Nations school to a non-First Nations school as child was, in his words, like moving an animal away from its natural habitat. “I felt misunderstood. I didn’t really belong,” he said. Both students now attend the First Nation, Métis & Inuit Secondary School Pilot Project, offered by the Toronto District School Board Aboriginal Education Centre. The pieces were products of in-class assignments students created through workshops with other indigenous artists. One of them, painter Nyle Johnston, said working with the students became much more than just creating art. “It was awesome. It was

beautiful,” he said. “I’ve come to know them as community members. When I see them out on the street, they are my family. And they will continue to be my family once this is all over,” he said. Johnston said building community has become the best form of healing for the students. “If we all look after each other, everything else will take care of itself. I wanted to show them that there is another way. I show them myself and I’m going to use education as protest,” he said. For the students, the show will hopefully begin a dia-

logue of the impact Native art can have and what it looks like. “We’re still making the culture. I’m making art and it is Native art, but it doesn’t fit the stereotype,” Bluebird said. Mason said he hopes the show will bring more knowledge and understanding of what is happening in the First Nations community, “Young native people do exist in the Toronto art community and have a voice. We’re not invisible,” he said.

El-Farouk Khaki, a Toronto lawyer and downtown resident, said his family fled Tanzania in the 1970s among thousands of East Indians who claimed asylum in Canada and the U.K. after being forced out of their homeland. The UN estimates there were about 10.4 million refugees of concern last year. Another 4.8 million are looked after in some 60 camps in the Middle East. Canada accepts about 15,000 refugees yearly. More than half are selected abroad for resettlement here. The others are privately sponsored or arrive in Canada seeking protection.

ormer Jamaican soldier Clive Townsend proudly saluted Citizenship Judge Karen McMillan as he was sworn in as a new Canadian with 103 others just days before our country’s 147th birthday on Tuesday, July 1. “It is a privilege to become a Canadian,” said the North York resident after the ceremony. “I have been waiting a long time for this dream to come true.” An ecstatic Townsend, 50, said his first task is to register to vote. “I went to vote in the provincial election (June 12) and I could not because I am not Canadian,” he said. “I will be first in line to vote in the mayoral election in October.” Townsend moved to Toronto from Jamaica in 1995 and plans to sponsor to Canada members of his family. “This document gives me privilege,” Townsend said of his Certificate of Citizenship. “I have been waiting for a long time to become a citizen of this great country.” He said this Canada Day will be “even more special” as he is a citizen. Kulwant Kaur, and her son, Sukhjinder, 20, also of North York, were all smiles as they recited their Oaths of Citizenship. “My son will have a great future here with more opportunities than I had,” Kaur beamed. “We are very excited about our lives in Canada.” She moved here with her family from India about 20-years ago and never took out citizenship. “I am so very proud,” she said. “Now we can vote and have better job opportunities.” Many of the new citizens fled violent or war-torn countries and were granted asylum in Canada. Liberty Village developments get green light, some residents raise concerns DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Two major developments in the Liberty Village vicinity got the green light from Toronto’s Planning and Growth Management committee, amid worries the neighbourhood was packing itself too tightly with young families without establishing the schools, parks and transportation infrastructure they might need. “You’ve got no parking, you’ve got no park, you’ve got no library, you’ve got no school,” said business owner Cathy Trail, deputing on one of the developments at 171 Liberty St. The committee was dealing with the Liberty Street proposal – that included a 28-storey, mixed-use building with office space, retail and 283 residential units from the seventh to 28th storeys – and not far off, a proposal to develop 10, 11, 25 and 30 Ordnance St., and 45 Strachan Ave., with residential towers of

39, 33 and 34 storeys — with 1012 residential units. Councillor Mike Layton supported both of them with some amendments – but worried about the Liberty Street redevelopment, which would be encroaching into the commercial areas of the growing community. “The closer we get to it, the more likely it is that more applications are coming in with residential,” said Layton, noting the site at 171 Liberty St. did already have that designation. “In another location this would be a great development – it’s got one storey of retail, six storeys of commercial office and then residential on top. People can push a button from the back of their business and get up to their residential.” Layton pointed out his office is working with the city on a west-end services review “to see what our investments are and what it takes to make this a livable community.” The Ordnance/Strachan redevelopment was another

matter. The development is adjacent to a planned new pedestrian bridge leading to Fort York across the railway tracks – and Layton said that bridge, which was subject to a controversial political tug of war in 2011, was a key piece of infrastructure in making the new high-rises more viable. “The bridge is a big part of making all this work,” he said. “The connection down to King Street and Fort York are critical. And I warn folks that if they come after that bridge in the next go around we’re going to have some serious problems.” The units on the site have also been more geared to families, with larger units. “Liberty Village is growing and folks are having babies,” said Layton. “...when they have kids, they want to stay. Many of these units are two and three bedrooms.”

i

The matter will go before Toronto City Council at its July meeting.

Staying cool when it’s hot outside It’s been a long, cold winter and we’ve waited months for the warm weather to arrive. Finally, summer’s here. And just as winter’s extreme cold affects those who are vulnerable, so does summer’s extreme heat. The warmer weather affects vulnerable populations more quickly than others and for these reasons, it’s important to make sure that your loved ones are safe. Younger children, babies and seniors are at particular risk when the temperatures rise. When summer temperatures soar beyond safe levels, the City of Toronto will issue a “Heat Alert.” These advisories are reminders for people – particularly those who are especially vulnerable, to take special care when the mercury soars. The Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre monitors these alerts and are always available to answer questions and provide support wherever needed. Those who may have an increased risk during the hot weather include: • Older adults, infants and young children • People with chronic illnesses, such as heart or respiratory conditions • People who work or exercise outside • People who live alone • Even folks without air conditioning or adequate air circulation Seniors have particular risks in the summer. These include the following, including descriptions of each: • Sun Burn: Marked by pink or red skin that feels warm or hot to the touch • Heat Exhaustion: Signs include sweating, cool moist skin, high body temperature, weak pulse, possibly fainting and vomiting

• Heat Stroke: Symptoms include a high body temperature and any of the following: weakness, confusion, hot, dry, flushed skin, fast pulse, headache and dizziness If there are people in your life, such as grandparents, friends, or neighbours who may be at risk for heat-related health issues, make sure to check on them regularly during the summer months. Where appropriate, support them or help them make provisions for managing in the heat. A friendly phone call, an email or visit to see how they’re doing will allow you the peace of mind that your loved one is okay. You can also create a hot weather protection plan for them to assure that they’re prepared for the heat. As part of the plan, make sure to address the following: • The location of the closest airconditioned place (shopping centre, library, community centre, etc.) or cooling centre • Knowing the signs and the symptoms of heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke • Having a backup support system, friend or caregiver who can help in case of an emergency.

ed not to leave our pets and children in the car when it’s hot. The same rule applies to anyone, especially seniors. NEVER leave a person or pet in an unattended car.

WHEN AN ALERT IS DECLARED, TAKE ACTION: Encourage those at risk to visit the cool room in their building, or cool public places such as malls, community centres, and libraries, and regularly check on them to make sure they’re managing. Here are some simple tips for seniors to help them cope with the heat: • Encourage them to drink plenty of fluids especially water • Limit activities so that they don’t over-exert themselves • Visit air conditioned spaces, such as malls, shopping centres and the city operated cooling centres • Call for help if they don’t feel well, i.e., if they become ill, faint, have trouble breathing or feel confused or disoriented.

New MPP vows to fight for transit

JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com With new rookie Liberal Trinity-Spadina MPP Han Dong not making Premier Ka t h l e e n Wy n n e’s ve t eran cabinet, which was announced Tuesday, he’ll have to wait until next Wednesday’s recall of the legislature to officially begin his duties. Dong took over from longtime representative Rosario Marchese, turning the riding from NDP orange to Liberal red. While next Wednesday’s recall of the legislature will officially herald his start as an elected politician, Dong is no newcomer to Queen’s Park. Prior to the election, he was a senior adviser for Ontario Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Michael Coteau. More important for voters, however, are his community ties. Dong has lived in TrinitySpadina for 14 years, and he has been active in the area. He has volunteered with the

Philippine Independence Day Council, the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival and several resource centres based in his riding. ‘Better transit’ He vowed to fight for better transit for the residents of Trinity-Spadina. “There are two things I’ll be pushing hard on,” he said. “One is the downtown relief line and the other is the twoway, 15-minute electrified GO Trains, which will help a lot of people, especially in Liberty Village.” Dong has also circulated

a petition calling for express transit service from Liberty Village to Union Station. “That’s something that will be easy to cancel when we have the downtown relief line to help people get around,” he said. Dong wants to see more bike lanes implemented throughout the riding. Beyond that, he will push for a better solution to planning issues to ensure development in Trinity-Spadina does not alter the character of the neighbourhoods there. “I want residents to have more say in how they want their neighbourhoods to be,” he said.
