Embarrassed by his inability to spell or pronounce the word, particularly because it had to be recorded on a police file, the man instead said, ‘King, my horse dropped dead on King.’ “And, it was said from that moment on, Roncesvalles Avenue ceased to extend to the lake,” the Roncesvalles Village Historic Society’s Meghan Edmonds told a capacity crowd gathered at the High Park library. More than 40 people braved the frigid temperatures last week for the society’s presentation about the historical origins of local streets. It is likely few of them knew that Roncesvalles Avenue has not always been the neighbourhood’s main street. Instead, it was Sorauren Avenue that boasted the title. “That’s why Sorauren’s so wide.
