Parkette construction to begin this spring HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com With three public consultations behind them, the City of Toronto and landscape architects from Harringon McAvan Ltd. announced construction of the Dufferin-King parkette is set to launch this spring.

“This is really exciting,” said Parkdale-High Park councillor Gord Perks. “All that remains is to get to work as soon as the ground thaws and build the thing.” A handful of residents gathered in the basement of the Parkdale United Church last

Before the dawn of electric streetcars, back when horses did the job, there was a driver who, historical records indicate, could not pronounce the word Roncesvalles. Embarrassed by his inability to spell or pronounce the word, particularly because it had to be recorded on a police file, the man instead said, ‘King, my horse dropped dead on King.’ “And, it was said from that moment on, Roncesvalles Avenue ceased to extend to the lake,” the Roncesvalles Village Historic Society’s Meghan Edmonds told a capacity crowd gathered at the High Park library. More than 40 people braved the frigid temperatures last week for the society’s presentation about the historical origins of local streets. It is likely few of them knew that Roncesvalles Avenue has not always been the neighbourhood’s main street. Instead, it was Sorauren Avenue that boasted the title. “That’s why Sorauren’s so wide. It had to be wide enough for the milk delivery trucks to turn around. It’s zoned commercial in an otherwise residential area,” Edmonds said. “The streetcar line along >>>BOYD, page 11

There’s not much like this in the area, it’s nice and condensed.” According to Peter Didiano, the supervisor of capital projects, renovations and rehabilitations in the parks, forestry and recreation department with the City of Toronto, the parkette has an approved budget of about $300,000.

early spring construction. The additional land purchased will add an additional 0.552 acres to the space, which also includes a large open greenspace where small games of pickup soccer can be played. “A lot of our smaller parkettes don’t get to have the range of activities and that can be a problem for a family when they have a range of kids,” Perks said. “With this new park, if you’ve got four kids with different ages they can all find something to do here and there’s place for you to sit in the shade and keep an eye on everybody.”

The parkette will also include a small plaque with a Salvation Army dedication. Although the third and final meeting aimed to take a look at the final concept, some residents still had suggestions for the park, which included a games table to encourage more people to stay in the park longer and as well as renaming the parkette. L a n d s c a p e a rc h i t e c t Richard McAvan told The Villager they are open to more suggestions and added the games table is “a simple request” that can be fulfilled. This parkette will be able to service not only the families in Parkdale, but Liberty Village as well, a community that is lacking in greenspace. The projected completion date for the park is late summer 2015.

Comedian Nicky Nasrallah makes the move from theatre to comedy HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com

C

omedian Nicky Nasrallah is funny and he knows it. In fact he’s always known it, even when he was pursuing theatre at the Randolph Academy for Performing Arts. “In theatre school I always played the comedic character. I was the comic relief,” he said. “I’m very much a character actor.” Originally from Ottawa, he left his hometown to come to Toronto to pursue theatre, but upon graduation he was tired of the theatre crowd and wanted to explore his comedic talent. He realized his heart just wasn’t in theatre anymore. “I just hated it and I wasn’t happy there anymore,” he told The Villager. So he made a career change and with help from a few friendly nudges from friends and colleagues Nasrallah decided to take comedy classes at Second

City downtown. According to the King and Dufferin comedian, his classes at Second City taught him when it comes to comedy, his perspective is the best perspective, which was a change of pace for the former theatre actor. “As a performer you need to be putting your voice out there,” he said. “So, it’s a huge shift from musical theatre where you’re reading someone else’s script and singing some else’s songs to where I am now, where I’m reaching an audience through my own voice.” It’s his perspective and comedic talent that got him his newest gig with 2015 Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival, where comedians from all over Canada will be performing their funniest material. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the festival, which runs for 11 days from March 5 to 15. TOSketchfest will showcase strictly sketch comedy,

Parkdale comedian Nicky Nasrallah, 34, will be doing a solo performance on March 5 and a group performance March 11 and 12 for Toronto SketchFest 2015.

which is written, rehearsed and performed by one single comedian or a cast of comedians, similar to Saturday Night Live. Nasrallah will be doing both a solo and a group performance for his second spin at the TOSketchfest. “It’s just such an amazing energy around the festival and it’s a great chance to reach an audience that has probably never heard of

you,” he said. His solo performance, which will be the first time he’s done one, will be on March 5 at the Theatre Centre Incubator on Queen Street West and he can’t wait. Is he nervous about it? “Not nervous, no. I’m very excited about it. I’ve wanted to do it for a long time and this is the first time I’ve gotten up off my

butt and applied to do it,” he said. “I am mostly concerned about whittling it down to 20 minutes, because there are so many things I want to do.” He admits the hardest part of this performance will be choosing his favourite performances for his audience, but he does promise wigs, costumes, songs, monologues and plenty of hilarious characters. He’ll also be involved in a second performance with fellow comedians Gillian Bartolucci, Marshall Lorenzo and Allana Reoch that they produced themselves. “It’s just four young voices being stupid on stage, which is fun,” he said. “It’s a broad scope of topics, there are some relationships in there, comments on society, things we find ridiculous, dating. It’s all pretty relatable.” That performance will be on March 11 and 12 at The Theatre Centre at 1115 Queen St. W.

The Parkdale comedian said he still uses a lot of his theatre training during all his performances because they are mostly musical comedies, sketch songs and musical improvisation. He added getting into comedy wasn’t as hard as he thought it would be because the atmosphere is so inviting and friendly. He also likes that as a comedian you create your own work, which is a change of pace from theatre. “When you’re in theatre you’re waiting to be cast. Whereas, in improv and sketch you’re making your own work,” the 34-year-old comedian said. “I’ve been producing my own stuff for the past three years and I love it...It’s just been the best three years of my life doing comedy.” For more information on 2015 Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival, visit www. torontosketchfest.com

Still waiting for benefit of Tory’s Rolodex Questions One of the most resonant of the points hammered at by mayoral candidate John Tory was his belief Toronto could not solve its problems on its own. The federal and provincial government would need to “come to the table” and pay a significant share of the cost of public housing, public transportation and infrastructure improvement. It was hard to argue with that premise and also hard to be too skeptical of Tory’s boasts, that he, above all other candidates, had the capacity to draw reluctant premiers and prime ministers to that table. Tory has fostered a great deal of non-partisan goodwill, after all – particularly compared to his predecessor Rob Ford. One can’t say whether anyone else would have done much better. But Tory’s relationships so far have borne little fruit. Indeed, every time Toronto goes to the table with the

david nickle the city province it seems like Toronto gets saddled with the cheque. Like previous examples – the $86 million in housing pooling, the $75 million in LRT sunk costs – the latest imposition emerged during the 2015 budget process. It turns out that Toronto taxpayers owe nearly $100 million to Metrolinx for the Union Pearson Express rail project that Toronto property taxpayers understood themselves to have nothing to do with. It turns out that wasn’t the case, at all. When Metrolinx builds a rail line through a municipality and has to make upgrades and changes to municipal infrastructure, the cost of that work falls on the municipality. And there was a lot of infrastructure rejigging that needed to be done to that rail line – a rail line that’s pretty much

exclusively for the use of air travellers staying in or near downtown Toronto, and priced at $30 a ticket. Now, this charge didn’t magically appear as Tory took office; city staff have known for years there would be a reckoning. In the same way, it was the Ford-era council that decided to change directions on the Scarborough subway and toss away $75 million in sunk costs, and it was Ford whose bluster failed to convince the province to stick to its original schedule on the housing pooling fund. But by the same token, the magic Rolodex Tory promised to bring to the mayor’s office hasn’t been nearly as effective as originally advertised – at least when it comes to swaying the provincial government to take provincial action on matters important to the city.

remain with new sex ed curriculum As a retired teacher I have been most interested to hear about the new course for sex education. However, there has been no mention how this will be implemented with the present financial shortfall. Will teachers be taken out of their classes to attend courses for teaching these new aspects or will they merely be confronted with the new syllabus with instructions to “teach this”? Also who will be responsible for the teaching in high schools; the home room or phys-ed teacher? Will the students in elective programs be covered? There are still many questions to be answered and explained. Marian Yorke

Metrolinx won’t be pinned down to electrification deadline HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Parkdale and Roncesvalles residents with many questions for Metrolinx regarding the timeline for the electrification of trains passing through the neighbourhood left with them mostly unanswered after a public meeting held by the Roncesvalles-MacDonnell Residents Association. “I was really hopeful in the beginning of the meeting because it’s so clearly on their radar,” said Catherine Hume, a resident on Golden Avenue near the rail corridor. “But there’s no urgency for them and there is so much urgency for us. It’s impossible for them to put themselves in our shoes.” Held Tuesday, Feb. 24 by the RMRA as part of its monthly meetings, guest speaker Karen Pitre, the executive director of electrification Metrolinx, fielded questions from residents. “I have a lot of sympathy, people have been following

this issue a long time and as we know transit in this city is difficult to get built,” Pitre told The Villager. The electrification of the Kitchener GO line to the airport that will be used by the Union Pearson Express (UPX) is expected to be the first phase of the overall electrification of the GO system. It’s part of the Liberal government’s regional express rail plan that would provide allday, two-way service across GO rail lines running, in some key areas, every 15 minutes. This past week Ontario Environment Minister Glen Murray ruled that Hydro One won’t need an environmental assessment to build a substation that would supply power to the tracks that run between Union Station into Pearson airport. This would put an end to environmental approvals needed before work can be done. According to Pitre, Metrolinx is now simply waiting on funding in order to move ahead with the elec-

as we can,” she explained to about 40 residents in attendance. “But the next stage requires a funding commitment; we can’t go and tender a contract for construction until we actually have a committed budget for this. “And it goes back to the provincial and federal government... Like any budget there’s priorities and they’re going to have to make some tough choices, so I don’t want to presume I know how they’re going to allocate there funding.” During the meeting Pitre felt pressure from Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo, MP Peggy Nash and York-South Weston MPP Mike Sullivan who were all in attendance asking the same question:

get this done ASAP, but I’m not going to let you pin me to the wall because I just know I’m going to be wrong.” A couple of dates Pitre did mention was that by April 2015 they will have completed preliminary designs for engineering work that include overhead wire support for the trains, and Metrolinx will be sifting through proposals from firms for a technical advisor during the months of April and May. “The planning process is happening on multiple levels, there’s electrification, there’s service expansion, there’s regional express rail, and there’s SmartTracks,” Pitre said. “We’re trying to make sure they’re all planned together so that at the end of day we’re able to deliver on the commitments that everybody has suggested that are important to the city of Toronto.”

When will the electrification of trains be completed and when can diesel trains stop being used? “I know you want a time and a date and I’m not going to give it to you because I’m going to be wrong,” Pitre said, point blank. “I would say that the work that’s been done by the community and Metrolinx has advanced this considerably, but I know it’s not fast enough and I understand that.” Sullivan added the date of 2017 had been mentioned by Metrolinx years ago, to begin rebuilding their locomotive fleets with state-of-the-art clean diesel technology called tier 4 diesel, which has yet to be done. However, Metrolinx is no longer committing to that date. “Another date thrown out was 2024 and no one here wants to hear that,” he said. Again, Pitre answered the question the same way. “I don’t want to get into the guessing game. I know there’s an understandable desire to

TCDSB mulling fate of two under-used schools NATALIE CHU plv@insidetoronto.com

food

With small class sizes and declining enrolment rates, the writing’s on the wall for amalgamating two under-utilized schools, according to some Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) staff. “We are fighting aggressively for our kids,” said John Volek, senior planning coordinator with the TCDSB. Along with parents and other TCDSB staff, members of the community discussed the future of Senhor Santo Cristo and St. Luke during an accommodation meeting last Thursday. Both schools in question are housed within Ossington Village and are operating at 20 per cent and 40 per cent capacity, respectively. The TCDSB considered two options: maintaining the status quo or amalgamating the schools. Even if the schools, which currently house about 300 students combined, moved to St. Luke’s, which has slightly larger facilities, they would still be below target utilization of 85 per cent. “Both schools are truly defined as small” said Volek. Even with larger schools supporting the SSC and St. Luke’s financially, Volek said

the TCDSB was still experiencing a $9-million deficit supporting undersubscribed schools. Ward 9 Trustee Jo-Ann Davis said the financial situation may mean reductions such as having one principal serve at both schools. “The ministry is making it more and more difficult to keep the status quo,” she said. She urged the members to consider the new, four-year $750-million School Consolidation Capital Program offered by the Ministry of Education for school consolidation. “This may be the one and only opportunity in the next decade for downtown schools to be making improvements,” Davis said. More money, she said, would allow for more staff and programming, includ-

ing music and art and after-school programs. Even with tenants such as Niagara University at Senhor Santo Cristo, there just isn’t enough funds to support the building, which can house over 550 pupils. Projections indicated SSC could face having less than 70 students enrolled over the next few years. The funding could also be used for building upgrades, which would go toward years of “deferred maintenance” according to Volek. With priority usually given to downtown schools with portables, St. Luke could finally address issues that would pose “serious sticker shock.” This “allure factor” of parents taking their children to refreshed schools would also help boost enrolment, according to Volek. In

Interactive BE

his experience, amalgamating did not create an “exodus” of students. However, improvements would hopefully attract the estimated 30 per cent of Catholics in the area that were not enrolling their children in the TCDSB. Davis said the first of four meetings was simply the “start of a journey” but the future of Catholic education should have “leaders and drivers from the community.” Any changes wouldn’t come into effect until at least the next calendar year at the earliest. But Fr. Fernandes Conrad of the local parish and voting member on the Board told the audience if amalgamation was the final decision, making the transition should begin now.

Boyd Gang hung out on Wright Avenue >>>from page 1 Roncesvalles killed Sorauren – it was no longer the major hub. Activities started centering around Ronces.” One-time soldier turned wealthy and prominent landowner Col. Walter O’Hara can be credited for naming several streets in Roncesvalles and Parkdale villages. After the Irish-born O’Hara, a member of the British Army, survived the Battle of Roncesvalles, he immigrated to Upper Canada with his wife Marian Murray. The couple settled in what is now known as Parkdale. After two decades as assistant adjutant General of Militia, he bought hundreds of acres of land north of Queen Street and west of Dufferin Street between 1831 and 1840. “There, he built a home called West Lodge after an old family estate in Ireland,” said Jared Ong, a member of the Roncesvalles Historic Society, during the Wednesday, Feb. 25 meeting. “West Lodge was acquired by the city in 1950 to make way for an apartment building, which still bears the name today.” He named several streets for his wife and children, however, ‘Marion Street’ should have been ‘Marian.’

Constance Street was named for his daughter, as was Ruth – now Fern Avenue. Geoffrey Street for his son, another son Walter was renamed Grenadier Road. Edmonds and Ong told their audience the story of the notorious Boyd Gang, a gang of bank robbers in the 1950s, who went on a spree capturing front page news for several days. “Edward Elonzo was considered a dashing figure; he would leap over the bank counters to get to the money and women would swoon when he went by,” she said. “There’s a movie – Citizen Gangster that portrays him in a positive light. He wasn’t as good as he was made out to be.” On Wright Avenue, there is a rooming house where he lived that’s still there today. “If you knew what house it was, you could go into the basement and you would see holes made by the BB guns of these gangsters because they were doing shooting practice in that basement door,” Edmonds said. “The gang shot a policeman, which was almost unheard of in those days. There were not a lot of guns around, shooting a police

officer was rare. It turned the public against the Boyd gang.” John Howard was very important to the area. A self-made man, he’d learned drafting and surveying in the British navy. He came to Canada in 1832 and was hired as a drawing teacher at Upper Canada College, whose founder was named Colborne. “Ring a bell anyone? Colborne Lodge – he named Colborne Lodge after the head of Upper Canada College,” Edmonds said. Howard deeded High Park to the city for an annual income of $1,200.

Story behind the name

Here are the origins of more Roncesvalles and Parkdale area street names: • Pearson Avenue was named after real estate brothers • Galley Avenue was named after an alderman • Fuller Avenue, a land owner whose dad was first bishop of Niagara • Close Avenue, named after an alderman • Harvard Avenue was named after the school
