many respects, a vast improvement on Tory’s SmartTrack plans, and on Tuesday morning Tory tried to make the case that he is in fact delivering more, not less. “This optimized plan will provide more transit for Toronto than I promised in the election,” he said. “In this case I’ll be delivering more overall.” It is technically true: to paper over the deficiencies in Tory’s plan, staff have recommended far more public transit in some areas — the downtown relief line that was notably not a priority in Tory’s campaign is in, and more light rail along the Eglinton Crosstown line. But it has undeniably scaled back the specific transit improvements that Tory promised in all those SmartTrack stations, and the three-stop Scarborough subway that will now be reduced to a single stop. Will anyone care about these broken promises? Tory seemed to think that they wouldn’t. And he may be right. Still, it was either good strategy or good luck that a day before the Wallace report landed on the desks of the executive committee members, Tory was able to make the sort of announcement that he’s been fond of. As early as next fall, Mayor Tory promised, it will be easier to sign up for recreation programs than it is now, and next year, the antiquated computer system that keeps kids out of city summer camps and swimming lessons will be entirely replaced. That sounds like an entirely achievable promise — as achievable as pushing the TTC to sell tokens using Interac machines, or towing cars parked illegally during rush hour, other incremental but noticeable improvements that Mayor Tory has brought about. In times like these, that is something I imagine our early-bird mayor would like us to remember.

Toronto police Traffic Services in the video. So for pedestrians, be alert and get rid of any distractions – like listening to music or a podcast on the cellphone – when crossing the road. The same goes for drivers with distracted driving still a major issue. If the fines set for driving and texting aren’t enough of a deterrent, take a look again at the sobering statistics of traffic fatalities. And a reminder for drivers – as of this year, motorists must yield the entire road to pedestrians when approaching crosswalks and school crossings, and wait until pedestrians have completely crossed the road. Both pedestrians and drivers will do well to slow down, and with the imminent arrival of spring, just breathe in the fresh air and relax.

Mayor John Tory started Tuesday morning with a visit to the Regent Park Aquatic Centre. Well, he started the public part of Tuesday morning in Regent Park. It was 10 a.m. March 8 when he showed up with community development and recreation committee chair and Councillor James Pasternak and Councillor Pam McConnell in tow. If his publicly touted schedule held true, this was something closer to the noon-hour for him, as Mayor Tory famously likes to start work sixish. It is one of the things that voters are said to like about him. Tory would do well to remind voters of the reasons they like him. This week, he has had to manage a fairly significant retreat from the argument he’d made to voters in 2014, to persuade them to cast their vote his way. Tory had spent the election swearing up and down that he would deliver a fast and affordable heavy rail rapid transit line called SmartTrack, with 15 new stops along a 53-kilometre route crossing the city, and had scoffed at naysayers who raised questions about whether the plan was even possible. On Monday, the long-awaited report from City Manager Peter Wallace, looking at a broad range of public transit options for Toronto, arrived with a thud. Wallace’s report deals with a number of things, but deep in the middle of it is a recognition that Tory’s SmartTrack plan as sold to the public simply isn’t possible. What is possible? No more than eight stations financed by the city, to enhance existing plans by Metrolinx to expand GO service along the rail lines. And no heavy rail in the west end through Etobicoke, but light rail instead. The overall transit plan laid out by Wallace in his detailed report to the executive committee is, in

Syrian refugees experienced the Canadian winter for the very first time ... and they loved it While many Torontonians were cursing the snow last week during the most recent snow storm, a group of roughly 50 Syrian refugees were having the time of their lives, enjoying their first taste of Canadian winter in the great outdoors at Arrowhead Provincial Park. The refugees were bused to the park in the morning, and got to enjoy tubing, snowball fights, snowshoeing, and walks through the wintry woods. The trip was put together by Toronto resident Julia Bitan, who teamed up with CultureLink and enlisted the support of organizations such as Parkbus, Overhang Adventures, and Ontario Parks. Bitan said she decided to organize the day trip because a similar trip helped her truly come to love the Canadian climate. “I came to Canada from Israel when I was 16 and for the first couple of years, winter wasn’t fun at all,” she said. “I went from a warm climate to a cold climate, and it wasn’t until I was exposed to the outdoors that I really started to appreciate how beautiful this country is.” She noted that the usual things new Canadians are told to experience – the CN Tower, Niagara Falls and Lake Ontario, to name a few – don’t really give a sense of the quintessential Canadian experience. “In Toronto, you see buildings and you see a lot of people, and you think ‘Where am I?’” Bitan said. “The outdoor community is so warm, so welcoming, and I was lucky to be invited to experience it. I want to share that.”

Her love of the outdoors was certainly shared by the Syrian refugees on the trip. On the ride up on a chartered bus supplied by Parkbus, the children in particular were mesmerized by the snow as they moved further north. Once they arrived at Arrowhead, they donned warm winter clothing, much of which was supplied by CultureLink, and got to enjoy a day in a provincial park with guides from Overhang Adventures. Ontario Parks allowed them to use the facilities and gear free of charge as part of the endeavour. Despite chilly temperatures, participants took to the activities right away. A huge snowball fight quickly broke out, and there were plenty of smiles to go around. Early trepidation on a tubing hill soon gave way to

enthusiasm, as well, as children, teens and adults alike took turns tubing down an Arrowhead run. A quick lunch – also courtesy of CultureLink – and a walk through the woods later, and the refugees had enjoyed a full day, become acclimated to the Canadian cold, and gained an appreciation for their new home country. “I liked everything – it was the first time in my life to have something like this,” said Hassan Mohamad through a translator. Having come to Canada 45 days earlier, Mohamad and his five children soaked up the activities and didn’t even mind the frigid temperatures. “They were enjoying it, I was enjoying it and I was pleased to see them enjoying it,” he said. “Out there, we didn’t even feel the cold.” Carine Nasri, who came to Canada on Dec. 31, had previously tobogganed in a smaller park in Toronto, but noted she had not experienced anything like her time in Arrowhead Provincial Park. Watching others experience the same was as much of a highlight for her as getting to enjoy park herself. “You feel like you’re seeing history being made. Those kids are going to remember the first time they got out in the snow and did these things,” she said. Following the activities, the group was treated to a potluck feast in Hunstville, supplied by Syrian Refugee Sponsorship Huntsville. Given the day’s success, Bitan hopes to be able to host similar events in the future. She knows, however, she was fortunate to have support of other organizations for Tuesday’s event, from Parkbus supplying free transportation to Overhang Adventures providing free guide services to Ontario Parks

offering up the free use of park space and equipment to Mountain Equipment Co-Op offering goodie bags. “We usually take ESL students on tours in the summer, but this was incredibly fun, and when (Bitan) asked us if we’d help out, of course we said yes,” said Overhang Adventures coowner Eric Plant. Parkbus co-founder Alex Berlyand, whose company provides transportation to provincial and national parks, similarly noted he was happy to donate the use of a bus for the trip. “Seeing all the kids jump in the snow, run around in the snow, go tubing, it’s amazing for them to have that experience, coming from where they came from,” he said. Returning to their motel in Chinatown after 10 p.m. thanks in no small part to heavy snowfall in Toronto on Tuesday night, event participants were tired but thrilled to have experienced the trip. “I was not expecting anything like that,” Mohamad said. “I’m so glad we came.”
