There’s no doubt about it, March Break has arrived The sure signs that it’s March Break: 1. You get the sudden urge for maple syrup. Not just so you can lather it on an enticing stack of pancakes you are intending to inhale either. Your primary focus is to go to one of those festivals out of the city to actually see how they make the yummy stuff. 2. You constantly daydream of heading off to High Park, Riverdale Farm or the Toronto Zoo. After which you immediately break into a rousing chorus of Talk to the Animals, secretly hoping the next person who walks by will ask you if you speak rhinoceros. So you can giggle, “Of courseros, can’t you?”
Opening safe injection sites is right thing to do in the city
A
Toronto Board of Health proposal to open safe injection sites for drug users in three neighbourhoods is bound to many residents uncomfortable, but it is the right thing to do. Put quite simply, these sites will save lives and make the city safer. That being said, if you live in the Parkdale, South Riverdale or Yonge/Dundas area you are rightly feeling some concern. Residents will be asking themselves if safety in the area will be compromised, are they at risk of being flooded with heroin and fentanyl addicts looking to shoot up? The answer is: ‘No’. The call for the safe injection sites has been made
in response to a growing number of deaths related to overdoses. T Those numbers are up 41 per cent from a decade earlier, and in the year 2013 a shocking 206 people died after injecting drugs. In the face of those numbers, to do nothing would be both irresponsible and immoral on the part of the health department and our city’s leaders. “All lives are important, and nursesupervised safe injection sites save lives,” said Angela Robertson, executive director of the Queen West-Central Toronto Community Health Centre in Parkdale – one of the proposed safeinjection sites.

The South Riverdale CHC and a Toronto Public Health office known as The Works near Yonge and Dundas are also proposed safe injection sites. They were identified as the best spots for the safe injection sites since they have the busiest needle exchanges in the city. Their staff say the existing services prevent the spread of hepatitis C and HIV among drug users. But more still needs to be done. Because many addicts are often alone, they are at high risk of a lethal overdose. Providing a safe place for them to do this lessens the chance of death or disease. The health board will offer recommendations on the safe injection sites this summer, once community meetings are held in the identified areas. We encourage local residents to take part in those meeting and learn the facts about this proposal.

From The Revenant to Incredible Hulk, Soho VFX in Liberty Village makes its mark on several big budget films
Staff photo
When you’re in the special effects business, you never know if the film you’re working on is going to be Oscar worthy. But the Toronto-based company, Soho VFX, seems to have the Midas touch. Co-founded by Allan Magled and his two partners, Berj Bannayan and Mike Mombourquette, Soho VFX had the opportunity to work on the highly buzzed about film The Revenant starring Leonardo DiCaprio who recently won an Academy Award for best actor. And no, it wasn’t the bear scene, which Magled hails as “phenomenal work.” “That bear sequence is amazing. It’s perfect. I wish we could
have said we did it,” he said with a laugh, while leaning back in his chair in his board room in Liberty Village. Usually more than one visual effects team works on a film, Magled explained. Sometimes it’s as simple as removing a boom mic that somehow made it into a frame, other times its creating an army of Ultron robots shooting lasers at the Avengers crew. For The Revenant, the Soho FVX team worked on what he calls “invisible environmental visual effects.” It’s the seamless movie magic that makes the audience believe no retouching was done at all. “It’s subtle work, but it’s enough to make a big difference. It’s

His team worked on roughly 50 shots of the film. He said it isn’t a lot, but he was happy to be a part of it in some way. With close to 100 movies under his belt, Magled still keeps his boy-like wonder about the magic of movie making; as long as he’s not watching a film he worked on. “When you’re so heavily involved, you look at it differently. I always like other people’s movies more than my own because I didn’t work on it,” Magled said. “When you know what’s happening, it’s different. I’m involved so heavily and I see it over and over again. A lot of the mystery is gone because I know how it’s all done, but the joy of watching films is still there.” Soho VFX set up shop in Liberty Village’s John Brunswick building at 99 Atlantic Ave. about 10 years ago. “When we came here, this was all we could afford. It was cheap, deserted, it was desolate,” Magled said. Before Soho VFX, Magled worked at C.O.R.E. Digital Pictures, a now defunct FX company before striking out on his own in 2002 with his partners. “When we came here, we had one little office and then we kept adding and adding and adding,” Magled said. Soho VFX now has about 100 employees and has had a hand in creating scenes in films such as the Incredible Hulk, Final Destination 5, The Avengers and Allegiant to name a few.
villager | insidetoronto.com
also something you wouldn’t even notice. We created effects you wouldn’t even think about. It just looks like that’s the way it was shot,” Magled explained. “There’s a scene where they’re burning the village, so we made sure the fires were in the right spot. We had the smoke behave in a certain way so it looks great in the frame, just little things like that. It’s something you won’t notice, but when you’re watching the film it looks beautiful. We were very happy to be a part of it.” Soho VFX helped with the overall look of the film, which entailed retouching the sky to the perfect blue hue to creating the perfect cloud to drift above DiCaprio’s head, all while sticking to the director’s vision. “The film has a look to it and it’s beautiful and all the sky is just right and the nature was just right. Every shot to some degree is touched just to get it right,” he said. “Each shot was meticulous.”
And all without any formal educational training. Magled said he never went to college to learn visual effects, but that didn’t stop him from sneaking into a class or two. Still, the CEO, a self-taught visual effects master, has done pretty well in the special effects business without it. Just don’t ask him to choose a favourite film he’s worked on. Like a proud papa, Magled said he can’t choose just one because he’s enjoyed them all. “Some have different cool factors to them. Movies like The Revenant are pretty awesome because that’s the type of visual effects movie where they’re not in your face. It’s different from say a Marvel film that’s in your face, constant eye candy all the time,” he said. “It’s (The Revenant) the extreme opposite and the fact that it got nominated for that (visual effects) is very cool.” HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com

ue with their busy lives. Careers, families and social lives shouldn’t suffer too much during a move and a Realtor can make sure your life stays on track. When purchasing a home, money is a big concern. Realtors can help budget funds properly because they know all of the necessary extra fees. When budgeting, buyers need to think of the land transfer tax, home insurance, legal costs and more. The listing price can be deceiving for first timers, so a proper budget is required. Also, listing prices are not final. Realtors know how to best negotiate the price of a home so you aren’t paying top dollar. Though there are fees at the time of purchase, there could be even more after moving day. A Realtor knows which questions to ask when view-
ing a house, including why the owner is selling, how old the roof is and if there has ever been flooding. This could save time on renovations and upgrades later on. A first-time buyer might have an idea of his or her budget and an area in which he or she would like to live, but no idea if the two match up. A Realtor can help decide which area is best, considering all factors. The professionals might even have a few up-and-coming areas that wouldn’t be considered otherwise. They know the demographics in each area and can help first-time buyers find the perfect neighbourhood. A house is one of the biggest purchases a person will make and a Realtor can guide him or her to make the best choices. Settling shouldn’t be an option.
