Murals, a living green wall and a bocce court are only a few ways West Queen West residents plan to transform their laneway into a vibrant community hot spot. As one of the winners of the city-wide call for submissions for The Laneway Project, a new initiative that is changing Toronto’s relationship with its laneways, the Cross-CollahieBeaconsfield-Gladstone (CCBG) Laneway Project was chosen for the residential portion. As the winner, the CCBG project will receive a portion of grant money to begin planning how to improve their laneway. “One of the things that really impressed us was their community spirit,” said urban planner Ariana Cancelli, a co-founder >>>COMMUNITY, page 2

DiNovo bill to bar OHIP coverage of LGBTQ conversion therapy Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo has introduced new legislation to protect youth from therapy aimed at preventing them from growing up to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual or queer. The NDP’s LGBTQ critic, DiNovo said she was inspired
to introduce the historic legislation after the suicide of Ohio trans teen Leelah Alcorn. In December of last year, Alcorn, 17, left a suicide note posted on her blog, and walked to her death in front of a tractor trailer. “A l c o r n’s s u i c i d e n o t e explained how her parents
rejected her, and then took her to therapists who rejected her – therapists who tried to ‘fix’ her,” DiNovo said in a statement. “Alcorn’s final words were, ‘Fix society. Please.’ This bill is our effort to fix society and protect LGBTQ youth.” DiNovo’s Affirming Sexual Or ientation and G ender
Identity Act will affirm the selfidentified sexual orientation and gender identity of youth. The bill would prevent any attempt to change or direct the sexual orientation or the gender identity of patients and prohibits such efforts from being an insured service covered by OHIP.
The bill would also prohibit such efforts from being carried out as part of health-care services to patients under 18 years of age and makes it an offence to do so. “If passed, this bill will make Ontario a leader in the protection of at-risk LGBTQ youth,” she said.

community
Community consultation will commence in the spring >>>from page 1 of The Laneway Project. “They were not previously a residents’ or community-organized group like many of the other applicants were.” “Generally, it’s good to have an existing community group, but in this case we thought what a great opportunity it is to create a community group around a public realm community project.” The group was spearheaded by Dundas and Dufferin streets resident Kate Andrew, who gathered community members together and drafted the proposal that includes various ideas to help transform the laneway including a lending library, tool trading boxes, monthly movie nights and a possible farmers’ market and community garden. Out of the proposal a steering group was also born, which will serve as the point of contact for future community consultation. The area’s H-shaped laneway unites the neighbours of Collahie Street to the north, Cross Street to the south, Beaconsfield Avenue to the east and Gladstone Avenue to the west, while the centre of the laneway houses the Fairview Nursing Home. came after The Laneway Project, a Toronto-based non-profit organization, received a $26,700 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and decided to run two pilot projects in the city; one, a commercial laneway, which was awarded to Reggae Lane, pitched by the York-Eglinton BIA, and one residential, which was awarded to CCBG. According to Cancelli, the grant will allow The Laneway Project to collaborate with community groups to create a master plan, which will be the vision for the laneway as well as community outreach and marketing. “Through these projects we’re
looking to show Toronto what the opportunities for laneway transformations are,” Cancelli said. “It’s not always going to be flashy art exhibits, or hard infrastructure with capital improvements, there are little things that can be done to make a laneway safer or more inviting and comfortable for people, so we wanted to be able to show that range of opportunity.” Andrew said the West Queen West laneway is currently used as a place for children to hang out and play sports, but she said she always thought it could be something more. “People congregate around the

laneway in summer and fall, so when we heard about the laneway project we always thought it’d be nice to sort of make something more of the space that would bring us all together,” Andrew told The Villager. In her proposal, she states that “over the last two decades, lane life has developed and is increasingly becoming a place to meet new neighbours and watch kids play and grow.” The CCBG’s proposal also states it’s looking to collaborate with the Fairview Nursing Home to better integrate its residents and staff with the surrounding neighbourhood that could incorporate a “creative and community use of green space” around the home. “There’s a great opportunity there for some multi-generational engagement,” Cancelli said. Andrew and Cancelli are looking to implement some of the ideas in the summer, but until then there is still work to be done. Community consultations will be set up this spring and the development of a master plan will follow during the summer.

St. Joseph’s Hospital creates engagement council Community members will help shape future services available at west-end hospital HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com St. Joseph’s Health Centre is looking to the west-end community to help change the way they provide services to the area through the creation of its own community engagement council. “This is their community hospital and so they need to be able to be the voice at the table saying this is what we need in our community,” said Elizabeth Buller, president and chief executive officer of St. Joe’s. “We’re quite excited about it because it really does put the community and the voice of the patient at the forefront.” The council will consist of 12 members of the com-
munity, and anyone in the area can apply. The chosen dozen would be signing up for an unpaid position that requires attendance to meetings that take place four to eight times a year. Buller said she is hoping for a diverse group that reflects the rich diversity found in the various west-end neighbourhoods. represent the community “We’re looking for a council that will represent the community. We want to make sure we’re representing youth, seniors, vulnerable populations and ethnic diversity,” Buller told The Villager. As the west side of Toronto grows and changes, so does its
medical needs. The hospital is looking to the people who will be using it the most for a nudge in the right direction when it comes to providing appropriate and sought-after health-care services. “We know what we’re already providing, but we may be providing a service that no longer meets the needs of the community anymore and (we may) have a huge gap in services,” she said, adding the area’s changing demographic will ultimately shift the hospital’s roster of services. “We know we have a diverse community, probably one of the most diverse in the GTA, so are we really meeting the needs of new immigrants? Are we really meeting the needs of our more vulnerable

populations? This is what we hope to find out through this council.” According to Buller, the council will also help St. Joe’s determine hospital priorities and will be led entirely by the 12 chosen community members with minimal oversight from St. Joe’s staff. “They’ll make recommendations to the organization. We don’t want to be a top-
down corporate mandate, we really want it to be a community council helping form the work we do,” Buller said. “We don’t want to be prescriptive – that’s the traditional approach, the ‘we know what’s best,’ and when we use that approach you actually don’t hear the voice of the community. We’re really trying to reach out and say, ‘OK, you use our services, what is it that you think we should be paying attention to?’” Once the council is formed and meetings are in full swing, Buller said she hopes the discussions will dig deep and discuss the hospital’s areas of improvements and go beyond the basic likes and dislikes. Buller said she would like to see suggestions that will
make a difference in patients’ lives and make it easier for them to access certain services right in their own backyards rather than travelling to the downtown core. gaps in care “What are the gaps in care that the community sees as important versus what we see as important and so it’s bringing those together?” Buller said. “It’s really something we believe in as the only way we can improve the experience for our patients and families on the west side.”

NDP leader Thomas Mulcair’s support for city gives Mayor John Tory leverage It is a good thing that former Ontario Progressive Conservative party leader John Tory is taking the nonpartisan part of his job so seriously. Otherwise, his meeting with federal NDP leader Thomas Mulcair would have been very awkward indeed. Mulcair came to Toronto early this week bearing gifts – or at least the promise of gifts. The leader of Canada’s Official Opposition told a crowd at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, effectively, that Toronto was his, and his party’s favourite: that the city and the region were the most important in Canada, and that money and attention would flow here from a federal NDP government. To specifics: the NDP would create 164,000 new affordable daycare spots in the Greater Toronto Area over the next eight years;
david nickle the city the minimum wage would be set federally at $15 an hour; and the GTA would receive $90 million a year more in funding from an increased share of the gas tax. This is powerful stuff. Affordable daycare and a higher minimum wage would mitigate the income inequality that is degrading the city. The $90 million in gas tax money would go a long way to improving and just maintaining the sputtering Toronto Transit Commission system. Poverty and transportation have been widely identified as pressing issues for Torontonians, and Mayor Tory has put both of those things at the top of his to-do list for the coming term of council.
Tory and Mulcair met Monday at Toronto City Hall, the day following Mulcair’s speech. The two faced TV cameras and reporters immediately afterward, comfortably side-by-side and clearly on the same page. Our mayor was generous in his praise for the policy, but careful. He noted the gas tax promise was one that built on transit funding that had been initiated by the Liberals and enshrined by the Conservative government. It was more, and that was good. And it was hard not to like that notion that Toronto was the most important place in Canada – that being a song Tory’s been singing for some time. Still, Tory wouldn’t endorse – and he would likely be foolish to do so. Mulcair and the NDP are the Official Opposition
in only the most tenuous sense; the party gained its unprecedented influence under the irreplaceable leadership of the late Jack Layton. The promises Mulcair made are really more powerful as ideas right now than they are as likely outcomes. But for now, that is all right. Mulcair has put forward the best and most reasonable federal agenda for cities since another unlikely prime minister, Paul Martin, almost a decade ago. It is the agenda that others will be held against – and that they will have to at least address if they hope to gain a foothold in this voterich region. And that gives Tory some leverage, in an arena where until recently it seemed as though he had very little.

Drug treatment program turned Kathy Middeton’s life around ANDREW PALAMARCHUK apalamarchuk@insidetoronto.com
For many years Kathy Middleton was picked up by police for crime. Nowadays she’s taken to the police station for a much different reason: to deliver motivational speeches. Middleton, 57, said she used crack cocaine for 15 years, resorting to fraud, theft, drug trafficking and prostitution to support her $300a-day habit. “I was hanging around a real dangerous crowd, there were guns,” she said, noting she was in and out of jail and has an “extensive criminal record.” The Queen and Shaw streets resident turned her life around after being arrested in November 2009. It was then that she entered the Toronto Drug Treatment Court in exchange for pleading guilty to cocaine trafficking and possessing property obtained by crime. “I’ll be honest, I went in to save myself from going to jail for a year,” she said. She soon, however, opted to give the program a serious try, and it worked. Middleton now shares her story in the hopes of preventing
others from getting hooked on drugs and educating them on what life is like for a crack addict. Middleton said her problems began at a young age. She was born into an upper-middle-class family; her father was an executive for a large corporation, requiring him to travel away from home a lot. Middleton left home when she was 15 because of a bad relationship with her mother. She began to use alcohol and drugs until she got pregnant at age 20. Middleton remained clean for the next 14 years: she lived in a townhouse on Manse Road in Scarborough, had another child and worked her way up to assistant manager at a bank branch. At age 34, Middleton got involved in a relationship with a man who introduced her to crack cocaine. Since she hadn’t done drugs for many years, she thought it would be no big deal to try smoking crack. For a while, Middleton said, she managed to juggle her addiction with being a good mother and her work. “It started eventually crossing the line where I couldn’t do it anymore,” she said, noting she ended up losing her job, her townhouse, her children
“

and herself. “Everything was a mess,” she said. “I was out using my drugs on Kingston Road near Galloway (Road) and staying in hotels on the hotel strip with girls that were involved in the sex trade, and there were drug dealers there.” Middleton soon also got involved
in selling drugs and prostitution to support her habit. “All you’re thinking of is ‘I have to get that drug. I have to get the money to get it,’” she recalled. “I hurt everybody who cared about me, like my dad. What dad wants to get a call that your daughter is in jail for prostitution?” Middleton continued her life of drugs, crime and jail until November 2009 when she entered the Toronto Drug Treatment Court for the second time. (She was expelled from the program in 2002 for repeated noncompliance.) The year-long program provides harm reduction treatment, abstinence support and group and individual counseling. Participants must appear in court twice a week and submit random urine samples. “It was kind of lonely at first...all
that chaos is gone,” she said of stopping drugs, adding she had to learn to “follow rules again.” Middleton graduated from the drug treatment program in January 2011 and has been giving back to the community since. She now volunteers with Toronto police and the drug treatment program, which she credits for turning her life around. Middleton regularly shares her story at police stations, the police college and at crime prevention conferences. “Police officers need to be educated and know what it’s like for that (drug-addicted) person,” she said. “I used to hate them (police) as much as they hated me. Now it’s totally different, and I think it does a lot of good when they see me.” Staff Sgt. Dave Rydzik of 42 Division agrees. “The benefit for us is often we would get immune to the human condition,” he said. “What this shows is that we can actually help. People do get better.”

Pan Am torchbearer: Melanie Byland CLARK KIM ckim@insidetoronto.com The Pan Am Torch was unveiled Monday at the Ontario Science Centre along with the names of the first torchbearers who will be carrying the flame. “It will be seen by millions. It will bring Canadians together,” said Saad Rafi, CEO of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games ( TO2015). “These Games are going to be special.” About 3,000 torchbearers in total are expected to complete, on average, a 200-metre segment during the 41-day torch relay. Dignitaries in attendance included Toronto Mayor John Tory, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, and TO2015 Board Chair David Peterson, who each announced one of the first nine torchbearers. “I felt so much responsibility for something that was so important,” recalled Whitfield, adding the torch relay really brings a sense of community. Creating a crafty message HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com It was a big night for Craft Ontario. On March 14, the not-for-profit organization announced its Citizens of Craft movement that aims to reclaim the word ‘craft’. “It’s a movement for everybody,” said executive director of Craft Ontario, Emma Quin. “It’s for those who are keen to develop their own style and aesthetic. It’s for makers, it’s for appreciators, and it’s for collectors. It’s for anyone who really values the quality of the handmade.” The announcement, which took place at Harbourfront Centre, invited the public to become citizens of craft by sharing stories and ideas of original craft items through social media using the hashtag #CitizensofCraft and by visiting the website www. citizensofcraft.ca The movement comes complete with a 10-point manifesto found on the
website. According to Quin this will be a rallying cry for those who value the idea of handcrafted, one-of-a kind pieces, whether it’s made from ceramics, glass or wood. It’s all-encompassing, she said. The push for the movement came after Craft Ontario, in partnership with Canadian Crafts Federation and all provincial and territorial craft councils in Canada, started to become concerned the ‘craft’ designation was becoming synonymous with large corporations pushing the idea of handmade. “You have handcrafted coffee, handcrafted cars… as if it’s made by one person and not in a mass factory. I think because the word is being used in much more massed marketing because they see it as a sexy word.” Quin said. “As we’ve seen that happen more and more, we find that it’s diluting and complicating our own messages.” She added this movement
is about reclaiming what craft means to those who value the idea of local products that are, in fact, handmade by the artist. The goal of the movement is to “broaden everybody’s ability to make a more successful living as a craftsperson,” said Quin. “Ultimately, as we support craft people, we want to make a more meaningful career for them and have more opportunities for markets.” According to Quin, the website launch is phase one of the movement, which includes a geo-site finder where community members can search for local craft products in their surrounding area. “It’s really important we emphasize that deep understanding and awareness and an appreciation for what craft is in our community.” Metroland Media Toronto is Community Media Partner for Craft Ontario.
