The cost to fix the high-priority damages to 10 Greek Gods sculptures created by the late E. B. Cox, which are currently residing on the Muzik nightclub pool bar property, is $55,000. The Board of Governors of Exhibition Place was presented with a report conducted by the board-appointed stone conservator Trevor Gillingwater, which outlined the repair urgency from low to high. According to the report, the statues’ state of despair range from a toe nearly falling off to deep abrasions.

According to coard chair Diane Young, the cost puts pressure on the board’s operating budget, with the funding taken from various budgets earmarked for other expenditures, and a partial cost to the nightclub owner. Repair costs per statue range from $3,000 to $8,000. The board plans to repair the 10 statues as it is the cheapest option at the moment, as moving the sculpture to a new location on Exhibition grounds and repairing the sculptures all at once could cost upward of $450,000. The board plans to do the >>>GREEK, page 2

Greek Gods leased to nightclub >>>from page 1 urgent repairs in May on site before the busy patio season starts to limit the potential negative impacts on Muzik’s business. “I’m happy to know some of the damages will be repaired,” said Kathy Sutton, the daughter of the artist and the woman advocating for the removal of the statutes from Muzik’s property. “However the family is not in agreement with the board to have the sculptures repaired where (they are) now and leave (the sculptures) there for another season, and we’re not alone. We have a growing list of supporters from arts organizations who find this recommendation unacceptable. As long as the art remains on the leased property, it remains at risk for further damage.” Mu z i k ow n e r Z l a t k o Starkovski, who addressed the board at the April 24 meeting, said he prefers the statues be cleaned on site, stating not only has it become part of the building, but also the club’s

marketing as well. He also added removing the statutes for repair and bringing them back would “have an impact on business for sure.” But when asked to elaborate, he said he couldn’t state specifics. The sculptures have been worked into a 20-year lease between Exhibition Place and Muzik as a board oversight in 2004. The lease allows both parties to continue the lease up until the 10-year mark, at which point either party can choose to renew or terminate the extension for the remaining 10 years. However, the fight for the sculptures is proving to be an obstacle for Starkovski. “This whole business with the sculptures… I did not bring the sculptures, I did

not take them from somewhere, it’s part of the building,” Starkovski said. “But now, it seems if I don’t give up the sculptures that I won’t get my extension.” Although the board denies that’s what happening, Young said the board will be working out an agreement with Starkovski. During the meeting, Sutton was asked by board vice-chair Connie Dejak if she’s considered fundraising to help the board with the cost of repairs that’s put pressure on its budget. “If fundraising was an option that implies that the family of public art are responsible for its well-being and maintenance and I think that would be a very dangerous precedent to set,” Sutton told The Villager. “This public art was essentially given away by a board of governors to a commercial establishment... They have to properly look after it.”

CNE general manager David Bednar retires after 17 years at the helm HILARY CATON plv@insidetoronto.com After 17 years as general manager for the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) David Bednar is ready for a new chapter in his life – retirement. “I could keep doing this, I guess for a lot longer, but I thought it’s just time. It’s time to move on,” Bednar told The Villager. “And this is the kind of job where you have to be fully invested no matter what.” Bednar will be replaced by Scarborough native Virginia Ludy. Bednar officially retires May 7, almost 17 years to the day from when he was first appointed GM of the CNE. Although he’ll be hanging up his hat he doesn’t plan to completely abandon the fair. He’ll always come back, except from now on it will be purely as an attendee and not an organizer. “It’s hard for me to imagine what my life would have been like without this. And it’s kind of bizarre because it’s not something I aspired to do, it just happened. I was lucky enough to get the job and once I had the job I was extremely lucky to find that it fits.” Bednar, who originally hails from Texas, moved to Canada in 1970 to attend Bishop’s University in Quebec. He graduated in 1974 with a major in theatre and a minor in

business administration. After living in Toronto for a few years he moved to New York City to open shows on Broadway and then in Chicago. But he missed Toronto and wanted to come back. The opportunity appeared in 1998 after his wife Alexandra showed him a newspaper ad she brought home after visiting Toronto. “It was all happenstance. She just happened to pick up a section of the Globe and Mail that had the ad, which of course, didn’t tell you what the job was either,” Bednar said. “It was a head hunter ad, where they ask questions to see if you’re the right fit. Are you adventurous and like solving problems? This one simply talked about public sector entertainment.” After two interviews, Bednar was offered the job. “I must have said something in the interview that clicked,” he said. When recalling his first few years at the helm, Bednar admits he was a bit overwhelmed. “On the first day, to be honest, I was a deer with its eyes caught in the headlights. I was like ‘Oh. My. God.’ Lucky I arrived in May, which meant that the existing team pretty much put the fair together, so I was in the fortunate situation that I was learning a lot,” he said. “My second fair I started with the nerves and I would say of my 17 years here, it took me easily half if

not two-thirds of my years here to start to settle down. I would be so anxious about the fair.” But he focused on what he went there to do, which was to improve the public reputation of the fair

and secure finances – and he did both. Last year, 1.43 million people came out to the fair during its 18-day run on the grounds of Exhibition Place, a 5.51 per cent increase from 2013, the year of the infamous cronut burger incident. In fact it was the highest attendance record since 2004. Bednar admits he thought he’d be a GM of theatre festivals like Stratford and Shaw, but he said this opportunity came along “and it’s been fantastic.” One of his most treasured memories include interviewing former president of the United States Bill Clinton in 2009 and eating all his favourite foods. “Every fair I go to, I basically eat my way through the fair,” he admitted. “Mostly my tastes revolve around fried dough.” That includes his must have favourites – a beaver tail with all the trimmings, including chocolate and caramel sauce. Although his successor isn’t as fond of fried dough as he is, he’s completely confident in her abili-

ties to run the fair while he’s off enjoying retirement. According to Bednar she’s more than capable of running the fair and is positive it’s in the right hands. “She’s been a rock for me since almost day one. It’s a good handover. She’s young enough that she can make things happen,” he said. His biggest piece of advice to her is to make the job her own. “It really is one of those jobs where she needs to organize her own team and express her own vision for the event.” While in retirement, Bednar doesn’t plan to head back to Texas. He said he feels more Canadian than he does American and plans to follow his passion for woodworking and create some furniture and plans to master a small accordion called a concertina. He’ll also have more time for his four children, two stepchildren and eight grandchildren. But don’t worry, you’ll see him around. “I will always have this indebtedness to the fair because of what it has meant to me both personally and professionally,” he said. “I’ll come back and I’ll always love the fair because I’ll have all the fun and none of the responsibility.”

Tory needs to have the austerity talk At the start of the whirling vortex of chaos (otherwise known as the May Toronto council meeting) next year’s budget seems very far off. It is not, of course. While council and the city deal with the ramifications of open-season on food trucks, a new city manager, the quest for a just taxi license and gender balance on the TTC, the city’s 2016 budget looms large – larger than is typical thanks to the odd way council balanced the 2015 budget. This was in March, when council approved a 2.75 per cent property tax increase for homeowners, and filled a $60-million shortfall by effectively borrowing from the city’s capital financing capacity in future years. Services were generally sustained or even enhanced, taxpayers were mollified with a rate-of-inflation increase, and the pain, Mayor John Tory promised, would come later. Tory also promised to let Toronto know in the coming weeks

david nickle the city exactly how he would deal with the 2016 gap between what it costs to run the city as it stands, and the diminishing amount of money actually available. Although Tory would not use the words, it all suggested that in 2016, Torontonians would be looking at some form of service cuts. Given that, it’s understandable that Tory has not yet made good on that one promise, to explain how he’ll balance things. So far, the Tory mayoralty has been a good-news affair. His announcements generally aren’t about telling people what they can’t have, but what he will provide: improved traffic, jobs for under-privileged youth, technological innovation. Soon Tory is going to have to start talking about more difficult things:

initially, one suspects, strategies for cutting waste in the city’s administrative bureaucracy, but as the process carries on, cuts and fee increases that will impact lives. Tory has so far avoided talking about fees, effectively ruling out the operationally sensitive but politically difficult application of “revenue tools”. Without a willingness to enact those things, the city is left with only one option: austerity. The city doesn’t have a terrible record on measured austerity, but it doesn’t have a great one either. In general, Torontonians seem to like their services and react with a certain amount of organized pique when they are threatened. When the matter finally comes up, it will show even a council meeting such as this week’s for the honeymoon that it in fact is.

Pedestrians will be forgotten Re: ‘Pedestrians: left out of the loop?’ Exclusive Report, April 30. Walk Toronto’s Dylan Reid has every reason to be skeptical of Toronto Transportation’s Big Data plans. Twelve years ago, as a member of the Toronto Pedestrian Committee, I was asked to serve another term on that committee. I had to say no. After nearly four years, it was far too frustrating because of Toronto Transportation’s endless “can’t do” attitude. If they had only devoted a fraction of their time and energy into what they “can do,” our city would have become a truly pleasant and safe place for pedestrians. As Reid pointed out, nowhere did Buckley say what his department could do or would do for pedestrians. Sadly, this is just another version of “can’t do.” William E. Brown

Parkdale chef happy to flog Local Dish campaign HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com For Fabio Bondi, a Parkdale chef and the owner of the Local Kitchen and Wine Bar, it is all about using fresh local ingredients at his Queen Street West restaurant. That’s one of the reasons why Live Green Toronto approached him to team up for its latest campaign The Local Dish. “Simply put, the point of The Local Dish is to encourage people to know when Ontario food is available and to eat more of it, said Mark Singh, the program manager for the City of Toronto’s environment and energy department. “So there are many reasons why local food is better. It’s fresher and it tends to be more nutritious. We want to help encourage people to consume more Ontario foods that include cheeses and meats, not just veggies. May marks the launch of the campaign, which features a different all-star fruit or vegetable each month. This month, asparagus has been chosen as it’s the beginning of its harvest season; Bondi created a sauteed asparagus dish to help

launch the campaign. “People don’t realize that you can get a lot of Ontario produce year round, Singh said. All the ingredients used in the dish, aside from the pecorino cheese, are from Ontario, which

include the chopped guanciale, an Italian cured meat or salami product prepared from pork jowl or cheeks, zabaione drizzle (zabaione is an Italian dessert or drink) and, of course, the asparagus. According to Bondi, about 90 per cent of the dishes at his restaurant at 1710 Queen St. W. are made with local ingredients; he occasionally buys from the local farmers markets. “I think it’s important to let people know that they should be eating asparagus or local food or food that’s in season whenever they can, Bondi said. “And it supports our local farmers, too. It affects things in so many ways, in terms of your carbon foot print and sustainability. He said he wanted to get involved with The Local Dish because he understands the importance of eating locally grown foods and he also believes in it. “Food tastes better when it’s local and most of the time when you’re using a local ingredient that’s seasonal, it’s cheaper, too, Bondi said. The Local Dish also has a contest element to the campaign. It encourages people to post their

favourite recipe using the all-star ingredient on Pinterest and it’ll be entered into a monthly prize draw. This month, Bondi contributed a $100 gift card to his restaurant. The campaign is also connected to the LiveGreen Card, in partnership with Foodland Ontario. The free card provides its cardholders with a range of discounts to various green businesses across Toronto and it isn’t just limited to restaurants; there are retail stores, pet stores and wellness businesses as well. According to Singh, there are more than 500 participating business that offer green deals to more than 40,000 cardholders. Students in Cheri DiNovo’s Girls Government tackle GMO issue LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com This year’s members of Parkdale-High Park MPP Cheri DiNovo’s Girls Government program, comprised of Grade 8 students from local schools, tackled the issue of labelling genetically modified foods in Canada. Since September, the group has been meeting monthly to discuss the subject, which each participant feels passionate about. Potential health risks from such ingredients as saturated fats, sugar and sodium are labelled, pointed out Scout Collins, a Queen Victoria Public School student. “Why not GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms),” she posed to her audience during a recent press conference at Queen’s Park. Genetically modified foods are foods whose genome has been altered by the techniques of genetic engineering so its DNA contains one or more genes not normally found there, Collins said. Katie Delay, a Grade 8 student at Holy Family Catholic School, said the group wrote letters to local and national newspapers as well as political officials in an effort to bring legislation that would require labelling of GMOs. They also want a public service announcement educating people about the health and environmental risks associated with

eating GMOs. Federal Minister of Health Rona Ambrose responded to the girls’ letter saying, ‘If there was an issue with the GMO safety, the Canadian government would have seen to it that the letter was addressed,’ Delay said. Elizabell Efrem, a student at Queen Victoria Public School, said the group is part of the 90 per cent of Canadians who believe that food containing genetically modified organisms should be labelled. It should be a regulation under federal law. “When we’re strolling down the aisles of the grocery store, we want to see any food item containing GMO ingredient labelled,” she said.

Parkdale musicians serving up a Turkish delight in unique show HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Composer Andrew Downing and folk singer Brenna MacCrimmon have always been intrigued by the melodious sounds of Turkish music. So it’s only fitting the Parkdale residents ended up working together on bringing the sounds of Istanbul, Turkey to the masses through Toronto Masque Theatre’s double bill of Les Indes Mécaniques & The Anahtar Project-Dreaming of the East in Dance and Music. The first half of the show, Les Indes Mécaniques, provides a dance performance based on musical stories of Rameau’s baroque opera-ballet Les Indes Galantes. It tells the story of a girl who opens a music box, a gift from Marie Antoinette, in an abandoned room inside Istanbul’s fabulous Topkapi Palace, which causes the figures inside to come to life. The second half, which Downing and MacCrimmon are participating in, is titled The Anahtar Project and is the concert portion of the evening. “It’s different,” Downing said. “Toronto Masque Theatre does a lot of these interesting things, where

Juno-Award winning composer and musician Andrew Downing, left, will be joined by folksinger Brenna MacCrimmon on his latest original work inspired by Istanbul, Turkey.

it’s not quite a concert, it’s not quite a dance performance and it’s not quite a theatre piece, but it involves all of these things in equal proportion.” “I think it’s a pretty interesting juxtaposition, this kind of early music and baroque dance. Stylistically, they’re quite different from each other, but their connection of the setting is Istanbul, Turkey.” Downing, a Juno Award-winning

jazz composer and performer, is leading the second half of the double bill, which features the traditional Turkish instrument the oud (a type of lute), a clarinet, percussion and the cello, played by Downing. There will be about 11 songs performed, half of which will be instrumental, while the other half will feature MacCrimmon singing. The College Street and Ossington

Avenue resident has been singing Turkish music for more than two decades around the world. MacCrimmon said the Turkish sounds have always appealed to her; she even spent six years living in Istanbul. She also plays with a folk band, comprised of three other musicians called ‘Nazari Turkwaz’. “It’s a working title,” MacCrimmon joked. She said she is excited to work with Downing and although they’re friends, this is the first time they’ve had a chance to work together and she praises his knack for capturing the essence of Turkey in his songs, which are all original works. “When I listen to his compositions that he wrote, it made pictures appear in front of my face. It’s like he somehow captured it all. It’s been really fun to work with him,” she said. Downing said he’s been going to Turkey every year for the past nine years, but the music to be played during the show’s run were all inspired by his time spent in Istanbul in 2013 while he was under the tutelage of a Turkish musician for three months. While there, he realized just how different the style of music really is.

“Turkish instruments are based on a scale system with notes we don’t have in western music. There are notes that are between the notes, they’re a little bit sharper and a little bit flat that have a certain flavour to them – an eastern flavour,” he said. Being a jazz musician himself, he said audiences can expect “the flavour and structure of Turkish music, but aesthetically and melodically” it sounds like his own music. Downing added the songs were inspired by the Gezi Park protests in 2013. Les Indes Mécaniques & The Anahtar Project-Dreaming of the East in Dance and Music, run May14 and 15 at Fleck Dance Theatre at the Harbourfront Centre, 207 Queens Quay W. >>>from page 1 to create a useful resource similar to the restaurant ratings website Yelp! for rating transit service. Of his previous venture, Chang said a mix of “business and regulatory” concerns were the reasons for the demise of Line Six, although he didn’t rule out reviving the service in the future. “Toronto is not a good place for this, it’s a tough environment,” said Chang this week. “I don’t want to say it’s dead, it could come back. I think there’s room for a service like that. But not in the incarnation we intended.” Despite generating more than $2,500 in online donations for a chartered bus service between Liberty Village and Union Station during the one week pilot from Oct. 6 to 10, 2014, Chang said subsequent ticket sales and the crush of subsequent media attention wasn’t sufficient enough to justify plans to continue the service, which was supposed to have relaunched in January 2015.

There was no contact made to us by the TTC or the city.

He said just 25 trip passes were sold in total for the service at around $200 each for a guaranteed seat on the bus for a month, dubbed the Liberty Village Express (LVE), whose route was selected via online voting from users. In addition to a seat, riders were also entitled to a free newspaper, coffee and access to Wi-Fi. Chang said the disappointing sales combined with concerns of the service’s legality convinced he and Scollon to pull the plug on Line Six. Three days before its planned re-launch, a short statement was posted on the group’s website which indicated Line Six wouldn’t resume until questions of its legal standing were resolved. Chang denied a legal action was launched against Line Six by the TTC or any other

public transit agency, as was rumoured, saying the decision to shutter the service was made following advice from the group’s own legal counsel. “There was no contact made to us by the TTC or the city,” he said. “But in order to operate we would have needed some kind of legal strategy and had to have had an argument ready in case there were objections. We talked to our lawyers and they advised us to hold back.” With its legal status open to challenge, Chang said any potential investors would have balked at providing start-up funds meaning Line Six’s dayto-day expenses would have to come from ticket sales. But the low demand was simply not enough to sustain the service. “It was an interesting period and we learned a lot from it and we’re applying the lessons we learned to our new project,” he said.

Urban markets reopen for the season this week JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com

ith the weather warming up, Scadding Court Community Centre is giving aspiring local entrepreneurs a chance to showcase their wares. Last year, the community centre opened its first Urban Market at Bathurst and Niagara streets, and the response was overwhelmingly positive from the community and vendors alike. “It’s more than a farmers’ market – there’s produce, prepared foods, retail and artisans selling crafts like jewelry,” said Scadding Court Community Centre community engagement worker Amanda Cruickshank. Adding to the venture’s success was the fact the land on which the market was situated was not

exactly well-used. “It was just a piece of empty land there, waiting to have condos developed on it,” Cruickshank said. “This gave something to the community other than just construction land.” This year, the market is returning and a second Urban Market is opening at Spadina Avenue and Bremner Boulevard. Both areas are ideal for a market of this type, as both are well-used yet do not offer much in the way of retail options. The two markets will also give local vendors a chance to test out business ideas. “A lot of our vendors are local entrepreneurs who are thinking of starting a business or who have a small business and want to grow it but want to be able to test it out,” Cruickshank said. “This is a testing ground where they can see how

popular their idea is without spending a ton on a bricks-and-mortar location.” Scadding Court Community Centre has been helping to incubate new businesses for the past few years through Market 707, a collection of small business ventures

located in shipping containers outside the community centre at Bathurst and Dundas streets. Scadding is looking to expand that venture into other neighbourhoods through its Business out of the Box model. “The success we’ve had with Market 707 here

means a number of groups are saying they want to try something like this,” said Scadding Court director of development and community engagement Effie Vlachoyannacos. “People want a way to try out businesses and figuring out if they work and what changes they might want to make to make the business more successful.” Vlachoyannacos added it will be up to outside groups and interested parties to express interest in the shipping container market concept. “Rather than us iden-

tifying neighbourhoods where we think the model would work, we’re looking at how the model can expand into neighbourhood improvement areas,” she said. “Other neighbourhoods know better than us what the demand is for something like this where they are.” Scadding Court will host a community information session on June 4 to showcase the possibilities with shipping container marketplaces. The two Urban Markets will open this week. The CityPlace Market at Spadina and Bremner will be open on Wednesdays from 3 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. while the Farm City Market at Bathurst and Niagara will be open from 3 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Fridays.

i

Both markets are expected to run until the week before Thanksgiving.

DOMINIK KUREK dkurek@insidetoronto.com North York live painter Jessica Gorlicky has temporarily moved her workspace and gallery to Queen West and is asking people to come check it out and help beautify the place. The artist, who goes by JessGo, is hosting a two-day open house at the gallery and studio, at 944 Queen St. W., Saturday and Sunday when people will be able to check out works from her past exhibits, as well as a new exhibit, see some of her work in progress, and even watch her paint. Those who attend will also be given a brush and paint to write a message on the wall of the studio. The studio will be demolished later this year for a condo development, when Gorlicky will relocate to Toronto’s York community.
