Toronto Council could be getting out of its private garbage collection contract in the city’s west end, if a provincial decision to downgrade contractor Green For Life’s safety rating to conditional violates the contract with the company. Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks brought the motion to the Tuesday council meeting, after GFL lost an appeal of a downgrading of its Commercial Vehicle Operators Rating to “conditional.” Early in this term of council, GFL won the contract to collect garbage in the city between Yonge Street and the Humber River. GFL gave the city a very low quotation for the contract, and city officials estimated that would save the city $10 million a year compared to using city workers. The company started work in August 2012 – and while there were some complaints initially about the service, within months city officials said the operation was running smoothly. Perks said he wants a report on what the conditional rating means for the city. JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com First-time author Massoud Abbasi’s debut novel Seeker of Horizons may be fiction, but it pulls no punches in reflecting some of the horrors he and his family faced as they made their way from Iran to Turkish refugee camps to Canada. Abbasi, a King and Bathurst streets resident and former Bay Street finance professional, decided to pen his book following the death of his father in February, 2013. “It was the only way I was finally able to actually cope with my father’s passing,” Abbasi said. “I ended up leaving my job on Bay Street, first to take care of the things related to his passing and then after a while, going to Europe for a month.” During that time, Abbasi admits he was in a terrible mindset, relying on heavy drinking and even drug use to drown the feelings he had over his father’s death. “I made my way back to Toronto and still wasn’t focused on my work or the company I had started (events company the Omega Group,)” he said. “The only thing that helped me was writing. That became cathartic for me.”

Success for this book, to me, would be having people come up to me and say ‘I was also abused as a kid’ or ‘I was also sexually abused.’ I’m hoping that sharing my story, as a kid will draw out other people’s stories. – Massoud Abbasi

The Abbasis had fled Iran in 1987 after his father, journalist Ali Abbasi, spent a year being tortured in Evin Prison for his political views and activism. They landed in a refugee camp in Turkey, where Massoud was subjected to sexual abuse by some people in the camp. While there, Ali made waves by shedding light on the injustices taking place in Iran. Following more than a year spent

in a refugee camp, the Abbasis made their way to Canada. Here, the family faced hardships of a different sort. Ali had been left partially blind and deaf due to the treatment he endured in prison and was unable to find work. Worse, he began lashing out at his loved ones. “My dad, because of his experiences, became so bitter and angry, he became a violent man,” the author said. Massoud added his father became abusive toward the rest of the family and finally decided he

had to intervene. “As the first boy in my family who was able to stand up to him, I finally realized what I had to do and I legally separated my parents,” Massoud said. “For the next nine years, I became my father’s legal guardian and I saw him become lonely, destitute and depressed. He went through a period where he smoked and drank a lot and when he passed, I felt incredibly guilty.” Despite the violence he perpetrated on his family later in life, Ali’s

activism and journalistic skills helped save the lives of countless people when he uncovered a plot that saw Iranian refugees living in Turkey returned to Iran, where they were tortured and often executed. “There’s a picture of him at the United Nations with a razor blade, threatening to kill himself if something wasn’t done,” Massoud said. While Seeker of Horizons is a fictional tale, it finds its basis in fact. Massoud noted he was wary of including certain details – including sexual abuse – in the book at first. “It’s a little worrisome for me to come out and say all this stuff, but I also wanted to share details,” he said. “Success for this book, to me, would be having people come up to me and say ‘I was also abused as a kid’ or ‘I was also sexually abused.’ I’m hoping that by sharing my story, it will draw out other people’s stories.” The book will be released at a special launch party at House of Moments Art Gallery and Lounge at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 9 and will be available in digital and paperback versions, with a hardcover release slated for June.

The past comes alive during Jane’s Walk at CAMH Friendly Spike Theatre Band performance highlights mental health ALI RAZA plv@insidetoronto.com A recent tour of Parkdale headed straight to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). Part of a series of Jane’s Walk tours across Toronto, this specific tour was led by the Friendly Spike Theatre Band (FSTB) at CAMH. The group hosted a walking tour of the old perimeter walls of CAMH. The tour, called The Walls are Alive With the Sounds of Mad People, took participants through each memorial plaque on site while the band told stories of former patients through skits, song and storytelling. The dynamic presentation is based on a book by author Geoffrey Reaume, titled Remembrance of Patients Past, Patient Life at the Toronto Hospital for the Insane, 1870-1940. The old hospital was on the site of CAMH. The group acted out a play at each plaque and sang during the walks between plaques. “The play is based on Reaume’s research that he did on the asylum,” said Ruth Ruth Stackhouse, director of FSTB. “The wall is symbolic of the patient labour, we really try

to focus on that. The patients did thousands of hours of labour and didn’t get paid for it. That’s something we can educate folks about but they left a legacy with the wall and the play plays tribute to that.” Among the songs and stories were tales of patients trying to escape over walls, patients experiencing abuse and patients with hopes and dreams. Issues such as racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination were touched upon during the presentation. FSTB brought life to each of the eight memorial plaques during their Sunday tour. “We’ve been with Jane’s Walk since the beginning of it,” Stackhouse said. “Our community theatre is very active in the Parkdale area and very active doing the history of patients’ past.” “We knew how profound of an experience it would be for all of us, because all of us have had experience with the mental health system, so it’s very profound to embody that experience and be able to perform it.” A crowd gathered for the walk at the first plaque. When the tour ended the group was met by roaring applause for their performance.

Stackhouse said Jane’s Walk offers a means to share important knowledge. “Jane’s Walk is an opportunity to share what we know with others,” she said. “We had a great group, people we’ve never seen before, but now they’ll walk away with this knowledge of the wall, Parkdale, what being a mental patient is about, and what it can be about.” Jane’s Walk, named for urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs, has grown immensely since 2007, the year after Jacobs died. The self-organized walks are free and require no registration. From 27 walks in 2007, today Jane’s Walk has more than 150 cities worldwide participating with 150 walks in Toronto alone. “This is one of our most popular walks and they’ve offered it for a couple years,” said Denise Pinto, Jane’s Walk director. “It’s wonderful because Parkdale residents get out and they get involved and hopefully they’re having a conversation about the topic.”

Kelly’s handling of mayor’s job deserves praise He won’t return your phone call personally. He doesn’t worry about his office budget. And he shows up early. Sometimes, Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly shows up very early. On Monday, he and Toronto Centre-Rosedale Councillor Kristyn WongTam hosted a 9 a.m. news conference to do something else that Mayor Rob Ford would never do: invite 200 LGBT couples to get married, for free, at Toronto’s Casa Loma. Now that Ford has left city hall to look after his personal problems, Kelly is the de-facto mayor. The leave of absence funnels to Kelly the few powers left to Ford after council voted to isolate him in November. Kelly represents Toronto at official functions, acts as the head of the government in emergencies and otherwise. And he continues in his role of attempting to elevate the discussion at

david nickle the city city hall, and restore dignity to the institution – a role in which Kelly has excelled. Shout-out I take the time to point this out because the longtime Scarborough councillor really deserves the shout-out. These past 12 months have seen the city dragged through the mud – from the moment that crack video started making the rounds, or maybe a short while before, when gossip about Ford’s substance troubles found their way from backrooms to front pages. Kelly stepped into the role of deputy mayor in the midst of it, taking over from Doug Holyday after he made his way to Queen’s Park. Kelly did so gamely – knowing there was trouble

He’s spent the past five months taking council’s pulse, nudging things along on issues he cares about, but otherwise taking a quesera-sera approach to matters of municipal policy. You would never run an

election campaign promising to be a mayor like Norm Kelly. But it is actually a good lesson for future mayors as they think about how to manage this city. Kelly’s geniality has led to a pretty productive council. It passed a decent budget, made a tough call on the future of the Billy Bishop Airport and generally conducted its business as well as one might hope. The next mayor might find him/herself needing some of Kelly’s low-key mojo. Because given the city’s financial constraints, it will be difficult to make a mark with more than one or two big, city-building projects and still manage the books. The virtues of modesty, inclusiveness and compromise might be the main of what our future leaders require.

brings back memories ALI RAZA plv@insidetoronto.com Parkdale Collegiate Institute hosted an open house last Saturday as part of its 125th anniversary celebrations. It included an alumni barbecue, a volleyball tournament and a war memorial service. The open house gave alumni a chance to reconnect and relive old high school memories. “It’s wonderful to be back here at the school,” said Julia Walkley, alumnus of the class of 1980. “Everyone says the same thing, they built a lot of friendships here that last a lifetime.” Walkley met up with her old friend Ben Young. Young was in the camera club while Walkley worked on the school newspaper. “It’s always exciting to come back to the old neighbourhood after living in the area for very formative years,” Young said. “It’s changed so much, all for the better. Coming back into the school it’s all about perspective, looking back at the friends we had back then, and looking at the friends we still have.” With or without a name tag, old teachers recognized their former students. Young mentioned he even had a difficult time calling his old teacher by his first name. The long-standing friendship of Tiiu Wallmer and Bonnie Caradonna, who both graduated in 1964 (they had actually met in Grade 6, prior to high school), is a testament

to memories and relationships the school helped nurture. They were browsing through one of the many rooms set up to showcase memories from each decade. “It feels a little bit surreal,” Wallmer said. “We met some of our former classmates, we had a terrific time in high school, we have very happy memories from here. It’s changed but things come back as you look at the old pictures and talk to friends.” “It was old back then, and it’s still old now,” Caradonna said. “It’s changed and it hasn’t, hopefully the students that are here now will take away from it what we did and keep the connections.” And those connections are strong as the school halls were filled with the smiles of alumni. Current students were also present to help with preparations and organization,

including Brandon Tran and Jesna Rameskumar who were running a raffle. “We’re trying to raise money for our design and tech workshop, so we’re offering a quilt which was handcrafted by one of our teachers as a prize,” said Tran. Added Rameskumar: “I think the way that the school put this idea together was a great idea. It came together really well and it’s been fun.” Walkley summed up the sentiments of the alumni over the weekend, wishing the school many more good memories: “We hope this building survives,” she said. “There are too many fond memories and as you see today there are many, many people here with a lot of great memories of the school and we would really like to see and hope that the school survives and stays in the community.”

name of a new waterfront street is Merchants’ Wharf. The “main street” for the emerging East Bayfront residential development located on the water’s edge and connecting to Queen’s Quay, Merchants’ Wharf was one of 700 suggestions for a naming contest organized by Waterfront Toronto. Submitted by Daniel Thompson, the name received nearly 40 per cent of some 2,200 votes cast during the online contest which ended May 1. Runners up included Kanadario Way – Iroquois for “sparkling” water – and Water Street. rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT the surface tracks between Victoria Park and Kennedy stations of late, that’s because the TTC has imposed a “slow order” on trains passing through. The order, in place for safety considerations due to the poor state of the tracks, has meant a doubling of travel time in both directions as trains on either side of Victoria Park inevitably become backed up, says the TTC. The TTC is currently performing overnight maintenance and track replacement work following the end of service. It has also announced weekend subway closures between Kennedy and Victoria Park May 10-11 as well as 24-25, as well as for June. The slow order is expected to remain until at the end of June.

GO Transit stations now rent Zipcars It is now possible to rent

a Zipcar from some GO Train stations in the GTA. Beginning in May, six Zipcars will be available for members of the car share service to reserve in GO Transit stations including Eglinton, Scarborough and Mimico, the company said in a statement. Zipcar is one of several carshares to gain prominence in the eyes of Metrolinx, which runs GO’s operations. Representatives from the provincial transit planning agency took part in a car sharing conference last year and the service is seen as an attractive “last mile” travel option for commuters who rely on public transit for the majority trips but still require a vehicle to get to their destinations. If the service proves a hit Zipcar, said it will increase the amount of vehicles for rent at GO Stations. She pointed to a recent report by the Centre for Research on Inner City Health of St. Michael’s Hospital, which reveals a partnership between police and a mental health nurse positively effects those affected by a mental health crisis. Typically, police officers are the first responders to mental health emergencies in a community. Toronto Police Service responds to about 20,000 calls related to a mental health crisis a year. “Every Toronto police officer is trained to deal with people in crisis,” the deputy chief said.

The Toronto Police Service alongside its health sector partners announced additional support and resources to those in the city who suffer emotional health crises. The announcement at Toronto police headquarters coincided with the first day of the Canadian Mental Health Association’s annual Mental Health Week. The goal is to establish enough Mobile Crisis Intervention Teams (MCIT) to serve Toronto in its entirety, all 17 Toronto police divisions this year, said Deputy Chief Mike Federico during his media address Monday. MCITs are comprised of a mental health nurse and police officer specially trained in crisis intervention. The team’s mission is to assess the person in distress, whom primary emergency responders were called to deal with,

They arrive separately to provide support to primary emergency crews. “The mental health nurse is associated with the psychiatric facilities that serve the client in the community.” Federico said. This announcement means St. Joseph’s Health Centre is getting a second MCIT to cover police divisions 11, 14 and now 22, reaching across its catchment area and neighbourhoods from West Etobicoke to Parkdale. “The more teams that are out there being able to respond to these crisis calls the better – this is a very important investment in local health care services,” said Gwen Yorston, manager of outpatient Mental Health Services, in a statement.
