he 10-year cycling plan proposed by the city this week that could see hundreds of kilometres of cycling infrastructure built is certainly ambitious and one that is worth going after in an expeditious manner. The plan is large in scale featuring 525 kilometres of new infrastructure with bike lanes and cycle tracks proposed in neighbourhoods across the entire city. This should generate excitement as there seems to be a city-building opportunity here with feasibility studies planned on some of Toronto’s major street corridors including Yonge Street from Front Street to Steeles Avenue, along Bloor Street from Dundas Street West to Sherbourne Street, and Danforth Avenue from Broadview
Avenue to Kingston Road. Like public transit, this plan has the potential of connecting and moving Toronto residents by providing more travel alternatives especially for those living in the edges of the city where affordable transportation options are woefully lacking. Building a connected network of bike lanes throughout the city could also encourage more people to ride their bicycles on safer, designated routes. The benefits of doing so are many, such as helping reduce traffic gridlock, promoting a healthier lifestyle, and decreasing the number of cycling fatalities. The timing also seems right with growing support from cycling advocates as well as the political will to take action on these issues. Last week’s approval by Toronto Council for

indication that the left could count on no reliable negotiations with the mayor’s office, so there was no point in trying. None of this should concern Tory much. While it’s true he has promised to bring Toronto Council together in a way that no other mayor has, the reality is that Tory does not really need to do so in order to govern. His natural allies, council’s centrists and right wing, will support him on most matters. If the mayor wants to put policy in place that strays to the left, he can rely on council’s left without a thought. Is the left going to vote against bike lanes, public housing dollars, public health matters? Given that Tory’s mandate seems to be based on offering comfort to voters of nearly every political persuasion, will the left really be able to bring forward a credible, winning mayoral candidate in 2018? Council’s left wing meanwhile, is in a corner. Unless a Bernie Sanders municipal figure emerges very soon, there is very little that a leftleaning councillor can do to harm Tory politically, particularly as Tory is far more likely to face a strong challenger from the right. And as was demonstrated last week, there is scarcely more that left-wing councillors can accomplish in working with Tory and his staff. They can vote for policies they agree with, of course, but influence them? Put a mark on them? Well they can certainly try – if, that is, they can put from their minds the May 2016 council meeting, when they and Toronto’s cab drivers both lost it all.

a pilot project to put separated bicycle lanes on Bloor Street is a good start. Of course, an ambitious plan like this has financial implications with the city recommending five levels of funding starting from $8 million a year that would allow for design and delivery of 27 per cent of the proposed projects, and $12 million a year to see half the projects go ahead. But this shouldn’t be done piecemeal and spending $20 million a year to complete the whole project in 10 years is warranted. With careful planning, community consultation, and financial accountability, the plan should proceed forward as soon as possible. Any delays in implementation could see costs rise and leave Toronto further behind other major cities when it comes to transportation infrastructure. It’s about time a city like Toronto catches up and becomes more connected.
Last week’s vote on Uber at Toronto City Council did undeniable harm to two very vulnerable groups in our city. Taxi drivers form one of those groups. The suite of amendments moved by Mayor John Tory and approved by a solid majority of Toronto councillors makes the lives of drivers who don’t own their own plates undeniably worse. Licenced taxi drivers come away from the debate with less stable income, in a position that makes it virtually impossible to compete with a potential flood of Uber-X cars and drivers. And then there is that other vulnerable group – one that’s not vulnerable economically or socially perhaps, but is practically an endangered species in the political ecology of Toronto City Hall: Toronto’s small but vocal group of left-wing councillors. Tory left them gasping in disbelief, after he abandoned a long negotiation with them to come up with a more progressive and taxi driver-friendly set of amendments, to make a sharp turn to the right and champion a very different, very Uber-friendly set of amendments. Those amendments mollified some of the bigger voices on the right – notably Giorgio Mammoliti and Jim Karygiannis. But they left the leadership on the left – Janet Davis, Gord Perks, Deputy Mayor Pam McConnell – seething more than usual. The negotiations had been long, and the left went into the May council meeting thinking they had a deal. The reversal was a clear

Construction season is here! RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Get ready for a busy season of road closures and delays Toronto, because getting around during the warmer months will require patience and planning. “There’s going to be a lot of construction taking place in our city this year,” said public works chair Jaye Robinson. “Much of our infrastructure is well past its service life.” Just last month, Robinson and staff from the city’s transportation services department unveiled a list of major construction projects planned for 2016, requiring co-ordinated road closures. This year’s workload is greater than last year’s due to the number of projects deferred for the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games, said transportation infrastructure director Frank Clarizio. year, there won’t be any reason to stop condo construction for a few weeks, as was the case during the Games. “This is all important work, and the city cannot have 120-year-old watermains out there. If we don’t replace them and there’s an emergency, then basically we have a problem,” said Steve Buckley, director of transportation. The city has budgeted more than $550 million for construction this year: $263 million for road, expressway and bridge repairs, and $227 million for upgrading sewers and watermains. Expect more days of around-theclock construction work, and aggravation for residents, in order to get projects finished ahead of schedule, Robinson said. “It’s short-term pain for long-term gain,” she said. “But staff is diligent about addressing concerns and we try to reduce the jackhammering to hours which aren’t disruptive.”

Amazing pain relief for back pain and sciatica
helped over 2,000 patients find relief from their agonising back pain and sciatica. According to Dr. Cooper, “We use a combination of state of the art advanced nerve scan technology, for precisely diagnosing the cause of your low back pain and sciatica; and a unique programme for reconstructing the damaged area causing the pain; this means superior long-term results for most people.” Because the treatment is nonsurgical, safe and easy, most patients report an almost immediate relief from their pain. Patient Alan .W. from Roncesvalles Village says, “My back pain was unbearable but the worst thing was the searing burning pain I felt in my buttock and leg. I could barely walk without sharp pains. My wife insisted I respond to one of these ads, I thought it would be a total waste of time, but I’m so glad she pushed me to call. Since beginning care, I’m already 95% better in just a few weeks, I only wish I had heard about chiropractic sooner.” Your special reader’s invitation includes a comprehensive consultation and examination to pinpoint the cause

IF YOU suffer from low back pain and sciatica, you are one of over 20 million adults in Canada with this often crippling spinal condition. Shooting, stabbing and burning pains from the low back, sometimes with additional pain through the buttocks and down the legs are all symptoms of pinched nerves often called “sciatica”. In severe cases, it can lead to muscle wasting, numbness and constant tingling down to the tip of the toes. Left untreated, the intense pain can rapidly wear you down and drain the joy out of life. That is, until now... Recent advances in the treatment of sciatica and lower back pain have led to the development and huge success of Advanced Bio-Structural Correction Technique. The excellent results of this chiropractic treatment have been published in major medical journals with great success rates. Some back surgeons and medical doctors are recommending their patients try this treatment first before having back surgery. In Roncesvalles Village, you can try Non-Surgical Bio-Structural Spinal Correction care at Village Park Chiropractic Health Centre, where Dr. Andrew Cooper D.C. is the low back pain and sciatica relief specialist. Dr. Cooper and his team of fully trained spinal care specialists have

Toronto-based YouTubers Becky Wright and Kelsey MacDermaid – better known to viewers as The Sorry Girls – have already managed to gain an impressive following. Their channel has over half a million subscribers and their videos have over 82 million views. Their DIY-themed channel (www.youtube.com/user/TheSorryGirls) started humbly when they created a do-it-yourself Halloween costume and chose to share it with others using their Humber College film and media training. The Sorry Girls are looking forward to taking full advantage of the YouTube Space to share what they’ve learned and benefit from what others have learned. “The last time we were at the YouTube Space, there were a bunch of other creators there,” MacDermaid recalled. “When you talk to other creators for about 10 minutes, a whole new world opens up and knowledge just floods in.” The space will also help cross-pollination of channels, with popular YouTubers able to work together on projects or even just make cameo appearances on other creators’ channels. “It’s a great way to help meet other creators and to get to work on things with other creators,” Wright said. For more information on the space, which opened in late April, visit www.youtube.com/yt/space/toronto.html Those who have yet to hit the 1,000-subscriber mark can still learn through online videos at www.youtube.com/user/creatoracademy

Andy Warhol famously suggested that in the future, everyone will have their 15 minutes of fame. That future is closer than most believed, and a new partnership between YouTube and George Brown College will work to make getting that 15 minutes – and more – easier than ever. The new YouTube Space Toronto, which opened at George Brown’s Richmond St. campus, will give both rising and established YouTubers a chance to learn, network, share and benefit from a choice of sets and technology. Following in the path of similar spaces in Los Angeles, London, New York, Paris, Mumbai and other global destinations, YouTube Space Toronto is the next step in the evolution of the online content creator community. “We have a film industry in Toronto, we have a music industry and we have a creator industry, but not necessarily a creator community yet,” said YouTube Space Toronto manager Mark Swierszcz. “This will help to create that community and bring creators together.” Many in the creator community work alone, filming, editing and posting videos from their own homes. While sharing their videos brings them an audience, YouTube Space Toronto will give them chances to collaborate, learn new techniques and even use special sets and equipment to create stronger content. “We’re going to try to have learn, connect and create events every week,” Swierszcz said, noting that the creators themselves will steer the sessions as much or more than YouTube itself. “It’s a really great opportunity for us to be very neutral and just let the content rule.” The space is designed specifically to help established YouTubers expand their audience bases, and those looking to use the space must have at least 10,000 subscribers. Some of the learning events will be open to those with a bit less experience – a minimum of 1,000 subscribers. “For those, we’ll be looking at how to make thumbnails (for videos) work better, how to write better content, how to shoot better,” Swierszcz said. “There’s not a lot out there to help creators with those things.” Specialized studios – one has multiple sets, including a bar, a rustic cabin/basement, a stage, a mural and an array of television sets while another offers green screen technology – will also provide new opportunities for creators. “If you’re a beauty or fashion creator living in a condo in the city, it’s hard to do a look book with an infinite background,” Swierszcz said. “This just opens up new possibilities for those creators.” The new facility will also provide equipment when necessary. While most established YouTube creators have their own preferred equipment, YouTube Space Toronto will give them a chance to play around with

I panicked –
My hair was thinning!
Framing and design are our passion! Custom framing since 1982.
Maya was shocked by the change in her hair. Fullness and volume were replaced by thinness and lifeless hair. She had to do something.
T
I had to do something I found out my mother experienced the same problems when she was younger, and she simply accepted her fate. But so much of my personality is in my hair, and I did not want to have the same problems. I had read about the importance of hair nutrients, so I decided to focus on the inside rather than on the outside, and went looking for a good supplement.
I was recommended a natural product called Hair Volume™. I have now used it for 2 months and I am really satisfied with the product. My hair feels full and healthy and even my nails feel much stronger. The shedding has also almost stopped. This is proof to me that proper nutrition on the inside helps you look your best on the outside. I highly recommend Hair Volume.” Maya N., Sweden
Test Yourself Yes No 1. Do you find too much hair in the shower drain ?
2. Does your hair look dull? 3. Does your hair break easily ? 4. Do you notice more grey hairs ?* 5. Do you find more hair in your brush ? If you answered “YES” to 2 or more questions, you may benefit from the Hair Volume supplement.
*Hair Volume contains copper which has shown in some studies to help the hair regain color.

Notice of Upcoming Public Consultation We invite you to join us at an upcoming public meeting for the Waterfront Transit “Reset” Phase 1 Study. The Study The City of Toronto, in partnership with the TTC and Waterfront Toronto is establishing a vision and plan for a comprehensive waterfront transit network. During this study, we will be reviewing existing waterfront transit, previously planned transit initiatives, and current and future transit needs. A range of preliminary concepts will be developed and evaluated to help determine a preferred east-west waterfront transit solution that will integrate north/south transit and active transportation, linking people from across the City to the waterfront and its nearby destinations and attractions.
