Roncesvalles Village is changing and local resident and chair of the Roncesvalles-Macdonnell Residents’ Association (RMRA) Brian Torry believes the community should have a say in how that change happens. “We feel like the community is at the point where development pressure is coming and we’d like to address it,” Torry told The Villager. He’s already gathered at least 20 community members ranging from urban planners, to architects to real estate agents, all of whom have a deep interest in the future of Roncesvalles Village, to form a working group

In the midst of renovations made possible by an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant, original century-old wall canvases were recently uncovered at the Revue Cinema. The canvases, Revue Film Society chair Mark Ellwood told The Villager, were covered by ducts. With help from a flashlight beam, just a peak of the panels was possible. “As we pulled back these ducts, more and more was revealed,” Ellwood said. “The

According to Torry, the group was spawned after the pre-application meeting held in early May regarding 422230 Roncesvalles Ave. and 76 Howard Park Ave., the former home of the Turner and Porter Funeral Home where a ninestorey building is proposed. “We just felt like developers were starting to come in and that more development pressures are going to come, >>>STUDY, page 7

Much Ado About Nothing - Bollywood style HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com
I
f you think William Shakespeare’s play, Much Ado About Nothing, couldn’t possibly relate to South Asian culture, think again. The Tarragon Theatre has brought the two together Bollywood style in a reimagining of the classic Shakespearean tale set in modern day Brampton. “Bollywood has gotten really popular, especially since Slumdog Millionaire it’s kind of exploded on the western gaze,” said Parkdale resident Sarena Parmar who plays Sita, this play’s version of Hero, the daughter of Lenato, or in the Tarragon’s version Ranjit, the Mayor of Brampton. For Parmar bringing in that Indian element is exciting. “With the themes and dynamics and the plot it really does make sense for it to be an Indian family,” said the King and Shaw streets resident. “The spirit of Indian culture is very much alive
in the Shakespearean characters for sure.” The play is the brainchild of the Tarragon’s artistic director Richard Rose. It follows a larger than life war of the sexes with a mix of a clash of cultures as the play navigates through the classic text with some modern elements. The formal titles of Lord and Sir are removed and replaced with familial titles and rather than passing notes, it’s text messages. The play also promises high emotion, fun, humour, songs and, of course, large spectacle dancing. The plot of the play remains the same, according to consulting director and artist-in-residence at the Tarragon Theatre Ravi Jain, a King Street and Strachan Avenue resident. One couple is tricked into confessing their love for one another, while another couple is tricked into breaking up on the basis of infidelity. Jain also added that the play is also great exploration into modern day South Asian culture. “You see two cultures

clashing around the ideas of love and marriage and in this play, we’re exploring what the dynamic between really traditional South Asian parents and nontraditional children really is,” said Jain. Parmar, who has done feature films, and had guest appearances on shows like Degrassi and Flashpoint, and is a series regular on How to be Indie, is no stranger to Shakespearean
plays. She’s played the iconic characters of Juliet and Ophelia in the past, but trying to flush out her character of Sita has been a bit of a challenge for her. She said she’s been trying to battle the text to reflect a proper representation of a particular type of woman in today’s world through Sita. “It’s a funny thing, in the original play, Hero or Sita is supposed to represent this embodiment of the perfect
woman in that time – so very demure and modest and exactly what every guy is looking for,” Parmar explained, adding that she’s supposed to be the complete opposite of her cousin Thara. “It’s been really challenging to think, now in 2015, what does it mean to be the ideal wife, or girlfriend because obviously girls aren’t the same and the idea of modesty is different. So what does that girl look like now so that I can represent the women that are going to come see the play? I’m still figuring it out.” Both Parmar and Jain wanted to get on board with the play, based on Rose’s past works on Shakespearean classics. Jain in particular heard about the play in passing from Rose a few years ago
and recently helped him develop ideas for fusing Indian elements into the play, such as having one character that only speaks Hindi, a common occurrence in Indian families. The play also features an entirely South Asian cast. It’s a feat Jain – who’s been directing since 2009, and has his own theatre company Why Not Theatre – said is a rarity. “It’s a great opportunity for this cast. In Toronto it’s rare that you see South Asians actors having the opportunity to preform Shakespeare on a main stage,” said Jain. “There are not many companies who do Shakespeare who are even doing that and I think it’s great to see my peers have that opportunity to grow and showcase their talent.” The Bollywood-inspired adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing runs until May 31 at The Tarragon Theatre mainstage, 30 Bridgman Ave.

oronto has a well-deserved reputation for its diverse offering of arts and cultural festivals. These are events that showcase a wide range of talents, skills and backgrounds – and they provide an important economic boost as well. The city’s Cultural Hotspot program, in its second year, is a welcome addition to Toronto’s cultural programming that gives a specific area of the city an increased profile. This year, the spotlight is on centralsouth Etobicoke and the artistic, cultural and heritage events taking place in that community from now through October. The concept is straight-forward enough: use a series of signature community projects to inspire residents and visitors to discover the area’s arts, culture, food, businesses, heritage and more. our view This year, examples of events include the Dancing in the Third performance and Lakeshore Spotlight on Act Mardi Gras as well as community culture good events related to the upcoming Pan Am Games. for all of us Benefits of this kind of focused program include an increased profile as well as greater co-ordination of multiple events – for diversity of interested participants and to help events that may otherwise struggle to get exposure. For residents of the neighbourhoods, the program is an opportunity to forge a greater connection to their community and for folks who live in other parts of the city, it’s an opportunity to glean a greater understanding of Toronto’s diverse communities. Last year, the Cultural Hotspot program was in the neighbourhoods of south Scarborough, with signature projects such as the Taste of Lawrence, Guild Alive with Culture and the Port Union Waterfront Festival. We hope the program’s continuation inspires new arts and cultural endeavours and helps develop a civic reputation as a global arts and cultural centre. Change is a reality in this city. Toronto’s population is growing and is becoming increasingly diverse. As the city continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how younger generations reshape the city’s cultural identity based on the more global influences of today. Giving our communities an opportunity for greater exposure from an increased breadth of arts and culture can only enhance that.

Doug Ford keeps limelight on family while Rob recovers from surgery There was good news for the Ford family at Mount Sinai Hospital this week: Rob Ford, father, son, husband, city councillor and former mayor, came through a difficult surgery as well as can be expected. Really, this is not big news for the city - except of course it is. Rob Ford has become a gravitational singularity for Toronto municipal news. Reporters across town were on tenterhooks, waiting to find out how things went for the councillor for Ward 2 and his eightmonth battle with cancer. Ford’s affable executive assistant Dan Jacobs took the point on Monday, providing regular updates as to the progress of the 10-hour surgery, and then on Tuesday with details of his boss’ recovery. As I write this, it looks
david nickle the city pretty good. City councillors have had health challenges before, but rarely have their issues gathered such attention. Rob Ford will be off work for four months. Ward 44 Councillor Ron Moeser was off work for much longer than that, dealing with the complications from surgery on his ankle during the last term. But few noticed. Of course, Moeser is no Rob Ford. In many respects, Moeser ought not mind that he’s not: Ford’s fame comes in part from his mayoralty, but in larger part for his sins. Thanks to Ford’s eventually admitted drug and alcohol abuse issues, and
the behaviour that surrounded it, he and his family became central figures in the story of Toronto over the past four years. Centre stage And they are still in it. In the next four months, Ford’s brother Doug – who last term was Ford’s replacement in Ward 2, political wing-man and eventually replacement in his mayoral re-election bid – will be back on the job, as a volunteer in the Ward 2 office. Again, under ordinary circumstances this is no big deal. Lots of councillors put their families to work either in their offices as volunteers or on the ground in the ward. Doug won’t be back on council, won’t be shaping
policy, probably won’t even be in the office that much. He’ll just be helping out. Except, of course, it won’t be that simple. If Doug doesn’t insert himself into political debates and personality politics, then we in the media will pull him on stage. Rob has made it clear as his health improves, so too does the prospect that he’ll be making a play for a second term as mayor in 2018, and a part of the next four months will be an exercise in making certain that the Ford name remains in the public eye. Doug, who last term took to scrums like the proverbial duck to water, will be doing his best to make sure our gaze doesn’t falter.

RISER Project enabling local theatre HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Putting on an independent production of a play can be difficult; it’s costly and budgets are tight. That’s why Parkdale resident Ravi Jain created The RISER Project. “There’s no real opportunity for artists to generate a portfolio of work and get their first project done. It’s really hard to put shows on in the city,” Jain said. “And artists need to do that in order for other theatres to take notice and give them a chance to showcase their work.” Created two and half years ago, The RISER Project, presented by Why Not Theatre, is funded by three senior theatre companies and grants from Canadian Heritage and the Toronto Arts Council’s Open Door program. The project aims to help artists produce plays corroboratively through a cost-sharing model. The idea came from Jain’s work as an artist-in-residence at Soul Pepper Theatre, which runs two shows in the same space for at least a week. This allowed the productions to share costs of the space and resources such as stage managers and crew

The RISER Project helped bring Parkdale’s Adam Paolozza’s play Paolozzapedia to the stage.
members. “I started to take the principles of all these ideas and got three independent companies together who are about to create their own shows and combined our budget together,” said Jain. “We shared the cost of space, a lighting designer, a stage manager and a lot of equipment that basically brought their budget down by 25 per cent. That’s about $10,000 to $12,000.” On average, Jain added, the cost to put on a play in Toronto can range from $30,000 to $40,000, with fund-
ing coming either from government grants, fundraising, the box office or even out of the artist’s pocket. This year, The RISER Project, which was by invitation only, helped bring four plays to the stage including one by Parkdale’s Adam Paolozza. His play, Paolozzapedia, is an autobiographical tale of a second generation Italo-Canadian who is homesick for a city he remembers from childhood stories told by his Italian father and trips to Italy in his early childhood. The play also includes folk songs performed by Paolozza. “I’ve gone to Italy in the past few years, but specifically I went last year on a professional development grant from the Toronto Arts Council to look at some popular outdoor theatre in my dad’s town of Baselice, Italy,” Paolozza told The Villager. “I also wanted to go on this trip to learn more stories about his parents and his family because he came over when he was really young. So I have very vague and fleeting memories of my grandmother and grandfather, so I was just trying to reconnect with the Italian side of me.” Paolozzapedia runs at The Theatre

Centre until May 31 and is influenced by Italian style of comedy and theatre. This is Paolozza’s first time with The RISER Project and said he has enjoyed the opportunity it created, not only for him but other first-time artists. “It’s a great experience so far. It allows us to take an idea and fast track it into a production. “What’s great about it is that everybody can create their own relation to the project,” Paolozza said. “Some companies had no funding, but I had some development funding. But what (The) RISER (Project) gives you is the space, the lighting designer, the publicity, the technician, all that’s taken care of so we can just focus on making the show and the creative side rather than the administrative side.” Next year The RISER Project will have an open casting call for artists and is aiming to put on eight shows, Jain said.

Study will look at Roncesvalle Ave. >>>from page 1 we just wanted to have a voice, a community voice in shaping that development,” Torry said. “It’s not to say we don’t want development, what city doesn’t change and we’re not against change, we’d just like to have a say of how that development shapes our neighbourhood because development does shape the future of a neighbourhood.” T h e s t u d y a re a w i l l include the entire length of Roncesvalles Avenue starting at Dundas St. W. down to Queen Street West. The group will also be looking at the curve of Dundas, Torry said. The group, whose title is still a work in progress, has already taken a walk around the neighbourhood identifying potential development sites and also had two meetings discussing the preservation of the unique character of the area. “Roncesvalles isn’t just an avenue but it’s also got this extra designation that

it’s a character area. And as such all development has to address this character, but there’s currently nothing that defines what the character of Roncesvalles is,” Torry explained. “We’re looking to give an explanation, so that developers could see if their proposal fits into that character.” Discussions around meeting with local Ward 14 Councillor Gord Perks is already on the agenda. According to Torry, getting city planners involved in the study is a goal but whether or not they move forward with the study isn’t contingent on their participation. “The goal of the group will be to do a study in the exact same way the city would do
and we really hope the city will come on board with us and help us,” he said. “If they don’t we’ll just do it anyway. We will follow the city process as closely as we can because that’s the best way for the city to understand and potentially adopt it so that’s really important to us.” The working group is looking to model its methodology after the steps taken in the Ossington Planning Study and create a supplementary document to provide to developers in addition to the City of Toronto’s Avenues and MidRise Building Study. It’s also taking a page from the current West Queen West Planning Study by conducting soon to be scheduled walking tours in the coming months along Roncesvalles and Dundas. “We want to expose the community to what we’re doing as much as possible and start seeking community input,” said Torry.

New ownership at West Toronto Kia Change is in the air at West Toronto Kia. With the warm weather, comes new ownership and a warm approach to sales at the dealership. Dealer principal Lief Sorensen and his wife Emily Sorensen, financial controller at the dealership, moved from Alberta to take over West Toronto Kia in March. They have big plans to make the dealership the best it can be. Lief brings a lifetime of experience at every level of the automotive industry to West Toronto Kia. He worked his way up the chain, from changing oil as a teenager at a dealership in Medicine Hat, Alta., to service manager at a General Motors dealership in Calgary, to sales manager at a number of luxury dealerships and finally made the decision to move across the country to West Toronto Kia. The couple and their son are settling into their new roles and community with ease, enjoying the beautiful city, friendly neighbours and variety of cuisine. “I
always say, in Alberta they know how to cook a great steak, but the rest of the cuisine is miles behind Toronto,” says Lief. Along with a change in ownership comes a change in sales approach. The small, family-owned dealership is committing to giving the best experience to customers with a low-pressure sales approach. “With my luxury background I’m looking to bring a new sales format to West Toronto Kia that’s a little more customer focused,” says Lief. “Instead of commissioned sales representatives, we have product demonstrators operating in our showroom, showcasing the features and benefits that Kia has to offer.” Only after a client has been satisfied with the model they are considering do they speak with the sales manager to decide on the offer, whether to finance or lease and when to pick it up. >>>from page 1 up, repair and new paint on unpainted sections needs to be done,” Ellwood said. And so, the film society has hired a professional paint conservator, Tessa Kline, who is working on bringing the panels back to life. She began the process May 6 and is expect to continue into this week. “I’m just so excited we’re revealing a part of the history of this building,” Ellwood said. “This building has changed so much over the years.” The aim is to complete the restoration work in time for the Revue’s spring gala fundraiser, which takes place Saturday, May 23. The funds raised will go towards this and additional renovations, restorations and ongoing programs not covered by the Trillium grant. The Revue is operated by a volunteer board of neighbours and staff, which provides affordable entertainment in the neighbourhood. The renovations, which include boosting the stage

and lobby lighting, rebuilding the theatre doors, replacing the auditorium floors, improving the washrooms, revamping the concession stand and outside ticket booth, began in November. “The Trillium grant took us only so far. We’re fundraising to continue this work,” Ellwood said. The gala spring fundraiser is a tribute to the 1920s featuring the Wintergarden Orchestra, an 11-piece jazz ensemble. Tickets are $100
each. They include a live orchestra performance, films, canapes, Scotch tasting and champagne as well as two rare vintage short films about Toronto, ‘Glimpses of Toronto’ and ‘Canada’s Queen City.’ As a bonus, every guest will receive a ‘Revue Bronze Annual Membership’ so they can enjoy the newly renovated theatre for the entire year.

Her dreams came true when she moved to Toronto nine years ago. “It’s all I’ve wanted to do,” Puddicombe told The Villager from her Ossington Avenue and Dundas Street home. “I’m pretty lucky that for the last 14 years of my life I’ve spent most of my time being able to make a living and make a world doing that.” Originally from a small town in Newfoundland, Puddicombe graduated from Memorial University in St. John’s in 2004 with a bachelor’s of fine arts degree, and since then
has appeared on television shows such as Republic of Doyle, Rookie Blue, Murdoch Mysteries and Afhganada. She also appeared on a web series B.J Fletcher: Private Eye for three seasons. But it wasn’t until about a year ago that she decided she wanted to get back into theatre performances. “From 2006 up until last year, I’ve only done TV work and so I was just really wanting to do more theatre, especially at the age I’m at right now,” the 32-year-old said. “I wanted to get back to why I started doing this in the first place.” Now Torontonians can catch her on stage in George F. Walker’s double bill of Parents Night and a Bigger Issue. Two back-toback plays that run until

Dana Puddicombe stars in George F. Walker’s double bill of Parents Night and The Bigger Issue until May 17 at the Theatre Passe Muraille’s Mainspace, 16 Ryerson Ave.
May 17. Both plays are produced by CrazyLady Theatre and directed by Wes Berger. Each play addresses the sometimes complicated relationships between parent, teacher and child and how one ultimately effects the other.
Parents Night deals with a teacher, no longer content to dole out platitudes; a father, trying not to let his anger and pain affect his son; and a mother, hoping her own mistakes don’t spell the fate of her daughter. The Bigger Issue sur-
rounds a troubling incident with a student and the school’s principal. Both are confronted by the boy’s parents, a couple trying to do their best for their son while dealing with poverty, violence and mental health issues. Puddicombe plays the character of Rosie in Parents Night and Maggie in a Bigger Issue, both mothers of children having a tough time in school. “They are very different, they have different ways of approaching how they getting what they and getting what they want,” she said. Puddicombe said she’s always been a fan of Walker’s work, but each of the scripts offered different elements that drew her in. “Parents Night is so intense. I absolutely fell in love with the woman I play. With the Bigger Issues I was blown away by the arch of the story, in general. I was so excited about it,” she
said. Although both plays deal with issues that seem pigeonholed by three distinct roles – parent, child, educator – Puddicombe said the play still manages, through its humour, to be universal. “It’s funny and thoughtprovoking pieces. Everyone can relate to it. It’s pretty intense feelings and arguments,” she said. “In this world people have taken on a teacher or mentor roles and have been a student and understand what it’s like.” For tickets, visit www. crazylady.info or by calling the box office at 416-5047529.

They’re starting to build the track for Honda Indy Toronto. It will take over the streets surrounding Exhibition Place near Lake Ontario and downtown Toronto June 12 to 14 instead of its usual July date, in order to prevent a conflict with the Pan Am Games. L a s t y e a r ’s w i n n e r Sebastien Bourdais was on hand Monday with Charlie Johnstone, president of Honda Indy Toronto, to kick off the building of the track and grandstand. The preparation schedule: • week of May 11 – block placement begins along Princes’ Boulevard (at night only); set up of suite structures continues; • May 19 – grandstand set up continues; Honda spectator bridge is installed (located between BMO Field and Direct Energy Centre); • week of May 25 – block placement begins along Lake Shore Boulevad (at night only); set up of suites continues;

• week of June 1 – block placement along Princes’ Boulevard (at night only) and suite set up continues; • June 8 – race team and concessions load-in begins for event weekend; • June 10 – Lake Shore is closed and will re-open Sunday at midnight. In addition to racing, the event features festival attractions including craft beer, food trucks, shows, games and activities, live entertainment,
charity events and celebrity appearances. While the race is being held earlier this year, the post-event take-down will be quicker. “Due to the Pam Am Games, this year it will take six days to remove all traces of the race as crews will be working day and night,” stated a Honda Indy media release.

pan am/parapan am games
‘Panamania’ will coincide with Toronto 2015 Games JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com While the impressive feats of athletes from across the Americas will be front and centre when the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games descend on the city, the Games will bring plenty more to the community. Panamania, a 35-day celebration of arts and culture featuring top local and international performers, will coincide with the Games, with live shows at Nathan Phillips Square, the Distillery District, the grounds at Exhibition Place and a number of other locations in Toronto and beyond. The arts and culture celebration was unveiled last Wednesday at the Berkeley Street Theatre near Front and Parliament streets. “We’ve been talking a lot about sports, of course, and for good reason because there are 10,000 athletes, coaches and officials making their way here to this region

this summer,” said Games CEO Saad Rafi. “But after you’ve taken in the fantastic sporting competitions, we want you to stick around and we want to continue to amaze you, make you dance, make you smile, but also to make you think.”
Panamania will feature more than 200 performers at 24 venues, including three live sites. Acts will run the entertainment gamut from live music to theatre to circus performances, dance, visual arts and more. “When you can bring both
sports and cultural artists together, it’s just such a powerful mechanism for tapping in people’s spirit, their hopes, their desires,” said Ontario Lt.-Gov. Elizabeth Dowdeswell. Musical guests will include The Roots, The Flaming Lips, Janelle Monae, Jann Arden, Tanya Tagaq, A Tribe Called Red and an array of others designed to offer sounds from across the Americas. Given Toronto’s diversity, many of the acts are local, though they will certainly offer an international feel, providing a taste of home for athletes visiting from other countries and for new Canadians alike. “We have talent here in Ontario that can make up that cultural richness and we don’t have to go far to find it,” said Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Michael Coteau. Toronto Centre-Rosedale Councillor Pam McConnell, c o n c u r re d , s a y i n g s h e hopes visitors “find a little

bit of themselves here in Toronto.” The three main venues promise plenty for people of all ages. Nathan Phillips Square will host the Pan Am/ Parapan Am Games opening ceremonies presented by Cirque du Soleil July 10, with daily concerts, medal ceremonies and fireworks displays running from that day until July 26 (the Pan Am Games) and again from Aug. 7 to 12 (the Parapan Am Games). All events in the square will be free.
The CIBC Pan Am Park, located at Exhibition Place, will offer a massive street party, with concerts, food and fun from July 11 to 25. Those events are also free. The CIBC Pan Am Park will host ticketed sports events as well, including volleyball, rugby and gymnastics. The Distillery District, meanwhile, will provide sights, sounds and tastes from across the Americas from July 11 to 25. “Our aspiration was to create a festival that is equally spectacular and dynamic,” said Don Shipley, Pan Am Games creative director of arts and culture. “Panamania was designed to elevate and complement the games, to provide a rare immersive experience and one that is creatively progressive, characterized by a spirit of innovation, diversity and collaboration.”

Care for yourself, then care for others: Rose Reisman LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com

cal appointments with Duke University’s School of Nursing and UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Medicine. Obesity and anxiety can be occupational hazards for caregivers, Reisman said. “What happens is, when you’re taking care of others, your own health fails,” she said, adding that caregivers put themselves at risk of such illnesses as heart disease and cancer. “Your immune

berries, which contain the antioxidant anthocyanidin that helps fight inflammation and oxidation, dark greens, such as kale or baby kale, broccoli and brussels sprouts and fish, like salmon, which prevents inflammation that causes plaque buildup in the brain. “The hardSaturday est thing is changing your lifestyle,” Reisman said. She speaks from experience. She was in her early 30s, a mother of four children, and an avid runner, who thought she was healthy until a cholesterol check provided a rude awakening. “My cholesterol levels were off the Richter scale,” Reisman recalled. Although she was slim, genetics were working against her. Reisman’s father and aunt had died of heart failure in their 50s. “I really had to educate myself. I started reading (food) labels,” she said. “I know a lot

about food, but I read a lot. It’s been a 22-year journey.” Initially, Reisman said convincing people that healthy food could taste good, was an uphill battle. Her book, Rose Reisman Brings Home Light Cooking, was instrumental in changing people’s opinion. It sold more than 400,000 copies. In addition to her books, her show on the Life Network, Lighten Up with Rose Reisman, also served as a way to get her message out. She credits her husband, who is in real estate, for the inspiration behind Rose Reisman Catering, The Art Of Eating Well. He would tell her about his business lunches that were heavy and most often unhealthy. In September, Reisman will launch a school lunch program in an effort to encourage students to eat healthy.

Rose Reisman’s resume boasts such titles as nutritionist, entrepreneur, author and TV personality – all of which have garnered her acclaim – yet one of her perhaps lesser known roles, but equally fulfilling, was that of caregiver. For years, her mother suffered from dementia and Reisman, with help from her sister, cared for her on a daily basis. It was a difficult period, recalled Reisman. “I remember feeling really anxious,” Reisman said. “I was missing out on exercise and eating well. I looked at myself in the mirror and thought, ‘I’m not taking care of myself.’” Almost eight million people in Canada are taking on the role of family caregiver. They are responsible for as much as 80 per cent of the needs
of those living with acute or chronic health issues. It’s a job that comes with its challenges, however, there is help. On Saturday, May 30, Saint Elizabeth Health Care, at-home services for family caregivers, presents The Caregiver Show, which takes place at the Centennial College’s Progress Campus Athletics Wellness Centre. The show is a one-day event providing caregivers with education and networking opportunities as well as a plethora of resources. It is brought to Toronto residents by Metroland Media Toronto and Downsizing Divas. Reisman is one of the guest speakers along with Teepa Snow, an occupational therapist who works as a dementia care and dementia education specialist. With an independent practice, Snow has clini-
system goes down. You’ve got to remember to eat.” Reisman advises starting slowly, not only for caregivers, but for anyone seeking to change their eating habits for the better. Stick to Canada’s Food Guide. Try to eat three out of the four food groups at every meal. Have a piece of whole grain bread with a piece of cheese and some fruit. “It’s that easy,” she said. For snacks, consume two of the four food groups. Eating according to Canada’s Food Guide will provide sustenance for at least three hours. “Sleep is really important,” Reisman added. Reisman, who is on the committee for the Women’s Brain Health Initiative (www. womensbrainhealth.org), which creates education programs and funds research to combat brain aging diseases that affect women, said there are particular foods one can eat to promote brain health. Brain disease, she said, starts in our 20s. These “brain foods” include
