Adam Vaughan is quitting Toronto council to run as a Liberal in the Trinity-Spadina federal byelection. Vaughan, who has served as councillor for Ward 20 (TrinitySpadina) since 2006, said he’s not waiting to see whether he wins the June 30 byelection as a Liberal candidate. As of the press deadline Tuesday, he was in the process of resigning his seat. “I’ve never believed, as a journalist or a councillor, with

I would say we have about 30 vendors next week.” In addition to the variety of goods the market’s vendors are selling, it also offers a bike wash to celebrate the spring after this year’s long winter. High Park walk in support of hearing guide dogs LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Not so long ago, Jacob Ormonde lived his life riddled in fear and anxiety, his confidence at an alltime low. Afraid he would sleep through a fire alarm resulted in panic attacks; hesitant to leave the house without a support worker, Ormonde, a Don Mills and Eglinton Avenue-area resident, was apprehensive about taking public transit to work. His social life suffered immensely. Everything changed almost a year ago when “Eclaire” entered his life. Eclaire, a two-year-old Standard Poodle, is Ormonde’s Hearing Ear Dog. Hearing Ear Guide Dogs are specifically trained to assist people who are deaf or hearing impaired by physically alerting their partner to common sounds like a fire alarm, doorbell, alarm clock, stove timers and telephone ringing, among a long list of others. A Hearing Ear Guide Dog nudges or paws its partner alerting them to a sound and then leads them to its source. “Eclaire has changed my life in so many aspects. She has made the
environment I live in so much safer and I have the confidence to live my life more independently,” Ormonde told The Villager through an email interview. “Before I got Eclaire, I lived a life of fear, anxiety and always felt like I needed someone with me. I lacked of confidence and did not have a social life. Work life was stressful for me to get through each day.” Having Eclaire by his side has given Ormonde the confidence to immerse himself in his community; to get out there and be social. He is a Special Olympic athlete competing in power-lifting and softball; he plays hockey through the Special Hockey International league called the Donaldson’s Diamonds. “Eclaire travels with me to sporting events and it makes me feel safe that she is always there for me and she assures me that I can finally live my life with joy and not fear and anxiety,” he said. Ormonde got Eclaire from the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. He underwent a two-week training program at the Dog Guides training facility in Oakville along with Eclaire. The Purina Walk for Guide Dogs takes place through High Park on Sunday, May 23. The 5 km walk raises funds for the training of guide dogs for those in need.
Walk for Dog Guides takes place in High Park. This event will be the first of more than 200 walks taking place across the country in support of people with disabilities. Proceeds from the walk will go towards providing Dog Guides at no cost to those who need it most. “After I found out that Dog Guides raises its money to help Canadians
at no costs in getting them a guide dog, I felt like it was my responsibility to give back and help raise money for other Canadians like myself in getting such a precious gift in my life,” said Ormonde. “The Walk for Guide Dogs from my perspective, is a great way to get out in the community and walk with friends and family.”
Ormonde encourages anyone seeking a partnership with a guide dog to contact the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. “When I was seeking information for a guide dog I found it was a very easy process and it is an incredible and amazing experience,” he said. Since its inception in 1983, the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides has been providing specially trained dog guides at no cost to people of all ages across the country. Each Dog Guide costs approximately $25,000 to raise and train, yet they are provided at no cost to qualified applicants. The organization relies solely on the support of fundraising events as well as donations from service clubs, corporations, foundations and individuals. “One hundred percent of the funds raised (from the walks) will go towards providing life changing Dog Guides to Canadians with disabilities,” said Dog Guides spokesperson Natalie Moncur.

Air Guitar Championships return JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com
Photo/JOSH WIPPEL
Tim ‘Glen Airy Glen Rocks’ Evans is organizing the Canadian Air Guitar Championships in July. Air Guitar Canada is starting up a fundraising campaign in support of Right To Play.
They may not know how to play guitar, but there’s no doubt the competitors in the resurgent Canadian Air Guitar Championships know how to rock. Air Guitar Canada is making a comeback this year following a fouryear lull, with 2007 national champion Tim “Glen Airy Glen Rocks” Evans leading the charge. Evans, who lives in the Little Italy area, decided the time was ripe to bring the competition back. The parent organization Air Guitar International has long stood for world peace with Evans noting “if you’re holding an air guitar, you can’t be holding a gun,” but now it’s aiming to stand for a lot more than that. Air Guitar Canada has added a charitable component to the contest, choosing international sports advocacy organization Right To Play as its benefactor. “It’s a fun property and an amazing event, but I don’t think many – if any – of the national competitions are fundraisers,” he said. “Right To Play is a child-focused, global charity and that’s what we wanted to focus on.”
At an air guitar contest, competitors let loose and unleash their inner rock stars. This year’s Toronto Regional Qualifier, slated to take place at Lee’s Palace July 10, already boasts an array of contestants who will swagger, strum and strut in a bid to take home the crown. Competitors include Sandy “Freakachu” Gibson, James “Thrustin’ Beaver” Dalzell and Carlos “Hansel the Mansel” Menguel. “We’re challenging others to join the ranks,” Evans said. “I hope people get the idea around it. We acknowledge air guitar is ridiculous, but it’s exceedingly entertaining to watch.” He added the organization is looking for new participants, emphasizing the joy of air guitar is in the bizarre characters the air guitarists come up with and the moves – choreographed or improvised – they flash on stage. “Like snowflakes, no two air guitarists will do things the same way,” he said. Top performers at the qualifier will go on to the national championships at the Mod Club July 31. In addition to its push for competitors, Air Guitar Canada started a 35-day fundraising drive at the start
of May in hopes of raising cash to fund the two competitions, pay the winner’s way to Finland for the world championships and make a sizable donation to Right To Play. “Through the entire thing – the fundraising campaign and ticket sales – we’re hoping to raise about $10,000,” Evans said. “The costs of running the two competitions, the venues, the marketing, the flight to Finland (for the winner) will cost around $5,000, so we’re hoping we can donate $5,000 to Right To Play.” Should the return of Air Guitar Canada prove as successful as Evans said he hopes, he aims to meet with other Air Guitar organizers from around the world in hopes of getting them to add a charitable angle to their own contests. “We’ll see in five years if Air Guitar International isn’t taking on a similar task (supporting charity),” Evans said. Adam Vaughan’s decision raises question as to whether councillors should step down before running for other seats Good on Adam Vaughan for packing up his office. The former journalist and now former city councillor up and quit this week, after the writ dropped on the federal byelection in Trinity-Spadina. Vaughan will be running for the federal Liberals, to try and take the riding from the New Democratic Party following Olivia Chow’s departure, to run for mayor. Leaving aside whether Vaughan is the best person to go to Ottawa for the riding of Trinity-Spadina, his decision regarding his seat at city hall has made for one of the best departures from city hall in recent memory. Unlike representatives at other levels of government, Toronto councillors and mayors are under no obligation to vacate their seats when they choose to run, mid-term, for MP or MPP. They can even, during the campaign period, continue
david nickle the city to collect their full pay. If they lose, their old job is waiting for them. Councillor-candidates don’t have a great record on resisting those perks. Donation Raymond Cho, just now serving the residents of Scarborough-Rouge River while running for the provincial Progressive Conservatives, says he’ll be donating his councillor salary to charity for the length of the campaign, but is still collecting it. Doug Holyday, the city’s former deputy mayor, did forgo his salary when he ran in last summer’s Etobicoke-Lakeshore byelection for the Progressive Conservatives, but he didn’t stop being a councillor
“
Because really, an honest decision to move up cannot come without an honest decision to move on.
until he won. Peter Milczyn came back to Toronto council after having lost against Holyday, and is now getting ready to run again for the Liberals there. We could go on: Olivia Chow, Brad Duguid, Judy Sgro, Michael Prue, Bas Balkissoon, Jack Layton... they all took advantage of a system that allows ambitious politicians to maintain both their base and safety net as they make the jump to federal and provincial politics. You can’t blame them for doing so, given how the rules are. The question that Vaughan’s decision raises,
again, is: should the rules be changed? expectations Federal and provincial representatives seem to get by fine with more severe restrictions on their ambitions. When Chow decided to run for mayor of Toronto, she quit her job in Ottawa, as did Jim Karygiannis, when he decided to run for a seat on council in Scarborough-Agincourt. Legislation forced them to genuinely commit to seeking the new office, in a way that Toronto councillors need not. That is something that we should expect from any politician with ambitions. Because really, an honest decision to move up cannot come without an honest decision to move on.

SUPERIOR EXTERIOR SALE
LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com One of Josie Candito’s favourite places to escape with her rescue pooch, Charlie, is High Park, particularly the zoo. She and her canine, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, visit as many as five times a week. “I think we’re so lucky we don’t have to pay anything to visit,” Candito said. “Where in Toronto is there anything for free? Thanks to the talents of Toronto graffiti artist and muralist MagicFinnga Wong, a.k.a Basil Jardine, the once blank wall between two of the auto service’s garage doors, is covered in zoo animals,

SickKids launches its Healthy and Happy campaign
Scouts host annual fundraising breakfast
JUsTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com
The 43rd annual Haliburton Club Breakfast set for next Thursday, May 22, in Toronto helps send young people to summer camp. Hosted by Scouts Canada Greater Toronto Council, this year’s breakfast takes place at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in the Canadian Room, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. The breakfast helps to raise funds to provide safe, well-maintained facilities for thousands of youth to enjoy at the Haliburton Scout Reserve, or at the Woodland Trails facility, which provide summer activities for Scouts. Included in these programs are canoeing, boating, fishing, orienteering and nature study at the 5,000acre Haliburton Scout Reserve. Scouts Canada strives to prevent having any youth turned away due to financial hardship. Guest speaker at the breakfast will be Brian Price, Olympic gold medal winner in 2008 as coxswain of the Canadian men’s eight rowing team. There are a variety of ticket options. For more info on tickets, please visit www.greatertoronto.scouts.ca/ ca/haliburton-breakfast
With concerns mounting that today’s kids could be the first generation with shorter lifespans than their parents, the SickKids Foundation is once again turning May into a month that puts children’s health in the limelight. SickKids launched its third annual Healthy and Happy campaign, a month-long initiative to promote proper exercise, nutrition and sleep for youngsters. “We’re on a mission to educate the public about the importance of healthy, active living for kids,” said SickKids President and CEO Mike Apkon. According to a national opinion poll conducted by SickKids, 78 per cent of adults feel kids today are getting less exercise than they did, while 65 per cent believe kids today have poorer eating habits. At a panel discussion to launch the Healthy and Happy campaign, a number of pediatric health-care experts weighed in on some of the issues facing kids today. Endocrinologist and head of SickKids new Centre for Healthy

Olympian Brian Price at the launch of SickKids Healthy and Happy Campaign at the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning.
Active Kids Dr. Jill Hamilton noted that unhealthy lifestyles have completely shifted the types of care children need, creating a spate of new health problems. “As an endocrinologist, 30 years ago, Type 2 diabetes was really not a diagnosis in children and now it...can make up a fairly substantial amount of patients,” she said. Hamilton said how much children eat can be less important than what
they eat. Daini Kalnins, director of clinical dietetics for SickKids concurred. She said even seemingly healthy choices such as fruit juice can be laden with sugar, while others still rely on sugary pop for a quick pickme-up. “Milk and water should be the beverages of choice for most children,” she said. Dr. Greg Wells, a scientist in the field of physiology and experimental medicine, said exercise is a crucial piece of the puzzle. Kids should be getting at least 60 minutes a day of exercise, a bar many are failing to meet. “We’re using exercise to actually diagnose diseases better, we’re using exercise to prevent disease and we’re using exercise to help treat chronic illnesses,” he said. Jennifer Cowie Bonne, CEO of Active Kids Canada, concurred but noted that while the benefits of exercise are widely known, it is still not a priority for many. With technology leading to increasingly sedentary lifestyles, she said only five per cent of kids were reaching the required 60 minutes of exercise a day.
“Just going out the door (to play) is something that does not happen,” she said. Dr. Indra Narang added that improper sleep can also lead to poor health, with studies showing that even minimal sleep deprivation can result in mental slowness and physical impacts. She pointed out exhaustion can lead children to eat unhealthily as well. “When (kids are) tired, they’re not going to seek out an apple or a salad,” she said. “They’re going to look for a sugary candy bar.” In addition to physical health problems, being overweight or obese can lead to other health issues as well. Psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Dettmer noted an informal poll showed obese children reported feeling they had the same quality of life as cancer patients despite the fact the latter often had to face invasive treatments on a regular basis. “Weight is the No. 1 reason kids are bullied today,” she said.

I don’t think I’m entitled to have it held for me if I fail.” Vaughan said further that if he did fail to win the byelection, he wouldn’t run for his old council seat in the 2014 municipal election. “I’ve decided to pursue a national housing program through an agenda for cities with (Liberal leader) Justin Trudeau,” he said. “I’m off to Ottawa to deliver housing for cities across the country. Done.” Toronto council will now have to appoint a caretaker councillor to look after Vaughan’s seat until the election. The city’s bylaws don’t allow the seat to remain vacant unless it becomes so 90 days before a municipal election.
