Parkdale street artist Angel Carrillo won the Inner Ninja Turtle street art challenge organized by Nickelodeon and Walmart after nationwide votes were counted on May 12. Carrillo’s design will be featured on a T-shirt available in Walmart this fall. The street art challenge had four Toronto artists design their own version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles using graffiti art. After a month of voting on designs, Canadians chose Carrillo’s design “I told Nickelodeon I want to retouch the design,” Carrillo said. “I’m going to resubmit a more detailed design. When it’s printed on the T-shirt, I want people to understand the difference between graffiti art and contemporary art.” “It’s not like a graphic designer trying to do graffiti, it’s a graffiti artist doing art,” he added. Carrillo is a well-known Toronto street artist. His work ranges from tattoos to wall murals, demonstrating his wide range of artistic ability. Carrillo is active in the Parkdale community and works as an art coordinator and educator. He aims to bring graffiti art to the mainstream and demonstrate it is a vital art form. He’s part of an art guild called Wallnoize, which aims for this goal. - Ali Raza

Parkdale resident helps SickKids staff stay active ALI RAZA plv@insidetoronto.com While it’s important to eat healthy and stay active as a child, Parkdale resident Jeff Kadoguchi of the SickKids Wellness Centre said it’s equally important for hospital staff to do the same. Kadoguchi is the SickKids wellness coordinator and manager of the Wellness Centre at the hospital. He has been in charge of several programs and clubs to promote healthy active living among staff. The initiatives he has introduced include a running club, snack workshops and recipe contests. He runs two programs at the Wellness Centre, the Inter-Hospital Health Challenge (IHHC) and the Couch to 5K initiative. When Kadoguchi started three and a half years ago at SickKids, he joined the health absence management team. The team was responsible for working with employees who were sick or injured as a result of sedentary habits. He worked with staff to accommodate their needs for a quick recovery. “The nature of the job is pretty morbid at times,”

Kadoguchi said. “S o w e s e e a l o t o f employee burnout. I wanted to work on promoting health and fitness among the staff. I wanted to be proactive instead of reactive to their issues.” Two years ago, Kadoguchi started working in the wellness program and now runs and operates its many programs and initiatives. He targets all aspects of health – from diet to physical exercise. But mental health, he said, can be a challenge. “It’s difficult to target,” he said. “It’s a lot harder to notice and therefore a lot harder to treat.” Mental health is one of the pillars targeted by the IHHC program at SickKids, now in its fifth year. Staff sign up in teams of four to seven people and track their health and activity on a website. Staff at the hospital compete with each other and the hospital competes with other hospitals as well. The challenge is during the month of May. “It’s a workplace health c h a l l e n g e,” Ka d o g u c h i said. “There are different measures of health, minutes

of physical activity, hours of sleep, number of fruits and vegetables you eat, the amount of water you intake and the time you spend relaxing for your mental health. Everyone tracks their points to compete.” This year, the hospital has a total of 12 teams and participants have doubled each year. Kadoguchi said the group collaboration allows for friendly competition while motivating staff to be healthy. A survey is done before and

after the competition to assess results. With limited funds for the wellness program, Kadoguchi is prompted to think of creative ideas to promote healthy active living. One of those ideas is the running club. “About two years ago, a marathoner came up to me and told me we should get the staff running,” Kadoguchi said. “So we started a running club, and at the beginning it was just me and him,

nobody would come out. Now we have 150 people in the club.” With a low turnout early in the running club, Kadoguchi realized most people don’t know how to run properly without risk of injury or wasted energy. He then decided to start the Couch to 5K initiative. “A lot of people waste a lot of energy when they run,” Kadoguchi said. “They’ll land on their feet incorrectly or sway their arms the wrong way. So we started

this to teach people.” Couch to 5K runs for 10 weeks. For the first week, runners run for a minute and walk for a minute. By the second week, they run for two minutes and walk a minute. The amount of time spent running is increased by a minute per week until the final results allow for 10 minutes of running. Kadoguchi said this system is efficient and allows for rest. This year’s Couch to 5K club started April 17 and runs for 10 weeks. With a gym, cycling, yoga and more, the Wellness Centre at SickKids and Kadoguchi aim to keep staff happy and healthy. He said he believes health is a vital component in workplace performance. “When people try to work faster and harder all day, but they don’t stop to eat, it’s like trying to drive faster without stopping to put gas in your car. You have to stop and think about your health,” he said. To learn more about SickKids’ Healthy and Happy campaign, visit http://bit.ly/SeO3ai

Perth Avenue students step it up to support War Child LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com As part of a year-long project learning about children of war and activists like Malala Yousafzai, an advocate for girls’ education, students at Perth Avenue Junior Public School will be hosting a fundraiser for War Child next month. Rather than organizing a typical event, such as a walkathon, Ar wyn Carpenter’s grades 4 and 5 students decided instead to lead a dance walk along the West Toronto Railpath on Thursday, May 29. They’ll dance their way along the path starting at the south end and end up in the Perth Avenue School’s playground for a celebration. In a three minute YouTube video, students explained why

in some places in the world children are taken from their parents and thought about how frightening that would be. As they delved deeper into

Growing healthier children now will save grief later in life

Write us

C

anadians believe our youth do not have a healthy lifestyle. We are twice as concerned about obesity in our youth than any other health risk. That says a lot about the physical conditioning of our youth. But it also says there is hope for our youth – if we heed the warning signs and act now. It’s Healthy and Happy Month (healthyandhappy. com) at The Hospital for Sick Children and this year the theme is centered around prevention of youth health issues. Growing healthier children now will save much grief later in life when they become unhealthy adults falling victim to many of the bad decisions made when young. And all of this is increasingly taxing on the healthcare system – overburdened and underfunded given increasing demands. The hospital – affectionately our view known as SickKids – conducted a survey, and here’s an example of Help our what they found. • 56 per cent said society must kids become do everything it can to improve healthy the lifestyle of today’s children. • Bullying, obesity, child abuse, alcohol/drug abuse, suicide, depression all rank high in the minds of Canadians. • 78 per cent say children today are getting less exercise compared to their own childhood. • 65 per cent say children today have poorer eating habits. • 59 per cent say children are receiving less nutritional value in what they eat. • Mental illness is the second most concerning illness among young people. Add to the fact that UNICEF ranks Canada 27th out of 29 industrialized nations on obesity. When that stat was shared, 21 per cent of Canadians said it motivated them to personal action. That would amount to a significant amount of action, but it’s not enough. We hope through the stories you read in today’s themed edition and the stories you read online at http://bit.ly/SeO3ai or www.parkdalevillager.com, you will be motivated to help preserve the health of young people who are part of your world. This may be the first generation of Canadians who do not live as long as their parents. That’s a hard concept to accept in a society where we generally are able to control many of the threats to our children’s health. We must not let that happen.

Doug Ford not the only one offering poisonous sentiments on the Griffin Centre issue Whilst his brother cavorts about cottage country on day passes from addiction rehabilitation, it’s reassuring to see that Etobicoke North Councillor Doug Ford is keeping up the Ford name and all it stands for here in the city. As the Etobicoke Guardian’s Tamara Shephard reported last week, Doug Ford showed up – late – for a meeting at Toronto police’s 23 Division to take on the Griffin Centre, a home for developmentally disabled youth on behalf of its angry neighbours. According to Shephard’s report, Ford told the staff of the centre that they had “ruined the community” in the Kipling Avenue and West Humber Boulevard area. The two-month-old centre is a house, where four youth – some with autism – live under super-

david nickle the city vision. Some of the youth have behavioural issues that manifest in outbursts sometimes requiring police to attend. The staff at the centre sometimes park on the street. Sometimes, the youth who live in the centre are permitted outdoors. It was this last point that seemed to shock Ford: “You can’t destroy a community like this. People have worked 30 years for their home... My heart goes out to kids with autism. But no one told me they’d be leaving the house. If it comes down to it, I’ll buy the house myself and resell it.” Later, he asked if any of the children were sex offenders (for the record:

staff at the centre said none of them are). It’s difficult to know what to say about Doug Ford and his mayorbrother Rob anymore. They have so debased the public discourse in the past year, that even when one of them passes an evening stirring up an angry crowd to run a house for disabled youth out of town, it’s hard to properly admonish him. But let’s leave Doug alone a moment, and ponder some of the other comments that Shephard collected last Thursday night from those in attendance. “This is not a place for mental people. This is a residential area. Why don’t you build a house out on a farm?” “When my child says, ‘Mommy, why are there police here again?’ What do I say?”

“This is a community for people, not for that.” Councillor Ford’s remarks ride the crest of that wave of unfortunate NIMBY-ism – and one might argue that his and his brother’s reign at Toronto City Hall these past three and a half years were propelled by the same poisonous sentiment. In October, odds are good that voters from most of Toronto will send the brothers Ford from Toronto City Hall – probably for good. But the insular, fearful, uncompassionate and fundamentally selfish sentiment on display at 23 Division last week – the sentiment that allowed the Fords in to begin with – it will take a great many years to rid ourselves of that.

Busting a move in support of dancing crossing guard

ERIN HATFIELD plv@insidetoronto.com

When I come to work, every single time... morning, noon and night, I am so filled with joy that I just can’t keep my feet still.

S

unday drivers on Dufferin Street witnessed quite a sight on the afternoon of May 18 when more than a hundred people, many in colourful costumes, enthusiastically danced their way across the street each time the signal changed. It was an event titled “Menace to Society: Kathleen The Dancing Crossing Guard edition”, and was held in solidarity and in support of Kathleen Byers, the now famous Brockton Triangle dancing crossing guard who was reprimanded and later suspended for busting a move while helping children cross the intersection on Dufferin Street at the corner of Gordon Street, between Dundas Street West and Queen Street. The Brockton Triangle resident is widely known as the Dancing Crossing Guard. She has held the job for 10 years and has spent the last four years shimmying and dancing. during her morning, lunch and afternoon shifts. On Dec. 4, she was told to

stop dancing by a coordinator with the Toronto Police Service, which oversees the city’s crossing guards. At that time, area children, parents and supporters held a few protests. The police and Byers came to an agreement on when and where she could dance and the dust seemed to settle. That was until last Tuesday when Byers resigned from her crossing guard job after she was

suspended because, according to police, she didn’t heed warnings to stop dancing on the job and for appearing in a music video for the band Born Ruffians wearing a crossing guard reflective vest and carrying a stop sign. “When I come to work, every single time... morning, noon and night, I am so filled with joy that I just can’t keep my feet still,” Byers said. The turnout at the protest, Byers said, spoke volumes to her and showed her that others supported her decision to dance. Vanessa Dunn was the lead organizer of the community dance party. THE DAVENPORT RIDING has an estimated population of 102,360, and is bounded roughly by Eglinton Ave. W. to the north, Ossington Ave. to the east, the CN railway to the west, and Queen St. W. to the south. The riding was established in 1999 drawing from the Oakwood, Dovercourt, Parkdale, High Park-Swansea and a small part of York South neighbourhoods. Since October 2011, the riding – one of the most culturally diverse in the province – has been represented by NDP MPP Jonah Schein.

Tell us about one local issue you plan to champion as MPP?

2

What would you do as MPP to improve local transit?

3

Some of Davenport’s constituents face economic challenges. What would you do to help improve their standard of living?

4

Tell us about your background and qualifications.

■ High-quality, affordable child care is important to Davenport families. That’s why I’m disappointed that the NDP blocked our legislation to modernize the child care system and opposed the recent budget, which would have boosted the wages of child care workers and increased child care funding. I am committed to building on the government’s record of increasing Toronto’s child care funding by 70% and protecting Full-Day Kindergarten, which is saving families about $6,500 annually.

■ At every opportunity I have fought for clean, electrified transit. I was so pleased to see funding for electrification of the Union Pearson Express and the entire GO Train system in the recent budget – and so disappointed to see the NDP oppose it. In addition, as part of a $5.5 billion investment in transit, Liberals would create a GO Regional Express Rail stop in Liberty Village, which would substantially reduce overcrowding on the Queen Streetcar.

■ I support policies that invest in

■ I was born in Portugal and moved

■ Creating jobs in Davenport and across the province is a key priority for me and the NDP. One in two jobs in the GTA is precarious, short-term work with no benefits. Youth unemployment is the highest in the country. New Democrats will create jobs by tying tax credits to job creation and investment in Ontario manufacturing. New Democrats will also raise the minimum wage to $12 an hour and peg it to inflation.

■ I will prioritize transit investments

■ We need to make Ontario a fairer place to live, which means investing in our public services. New Democrats will invest an additional $100 million in child care to keep licensed spaces open. Since the Liberal government approved hydro and natural gas rate increases of over 30 per cent, constituents have contacted me worried about how they will make ends meet. New Democrats will reduce electricity bills and take the HST off of home heating.

■ I grew up in West Toronto and

■ As an MPP, I would fight for government programs that help people in need. The Green party stands for raising taxes to North American standards on corporations and polluters to balance the budget. We would not balance the budget on the backs of the poor or agree to any budget that did so. I would also ensure that my office was always open to my constituents and they would have direct access to me to help them in any way possible.

■ I worked as a criminal lawyer for 10 years in the trial and appeal courts in Toronto and the GTA and helped people from every part of the city parents, teenagers, and others who often struggled with serious personal and family issues. I also worked with judges, court officers, court reporters, police officers, and Crown attorneys. I came to see that we are all invested in the same issues, the same future. I am deeply attached to our community and have a strong affinity for public policy.

enport is to be connected north and south, east and west, with the rest of Toronto by rapid transit. I’d champion the idea of converting GO/CN lines on the north and south corridors into commuter lines with trains running throughout the day and newly built stations up and down the riding. I’d also insist on a timeline to convert the airport fixed link into an electrical line now, not some vague promise to do so in the unknown future.

Lan Daniel (Conservative) | 647-763-2569 | www.davenport.ontariopc.com

that make sense and use fair ways to pay for them. The NDP is the only party that has prioritized the electrification of the Air Rail Link. Electric trains will allow for more stops along the route to serve our communities and integrate with our existing transit network. The NDP is also the only party that believes corporations should pay their fair share through an increase to the corporate tax rate and closing tax loopholes.

dedicated revenue source by way of a congestion tax, carbon tax, or road tolls. I’m talking about a closed loop of revenue solely dedicated to transit. It’s possible to build fully functional neighbourhood stations at places like Rogers, St. Clair West, Dupont, Dundas West, College, and Queen.

people and will fight for good-paying jobs. In addition to job-creating investments in new infrastructure, Liberals will create more jobs with a $2.5 billion jobs and prosperity fund. We are also increasing the minimum wage to $11/hour and will tie future increases to inflation. We need to help more young people get into the job market, which is why our new Youth Jobs Strategy will create 30,000 new jobs for youth.

with my family to Davenport in 1970. I worked in the pharmaceutical industry for over 15 years, where I saw how health care improved under the Liberal government. My husband and I have two young boys enrolled in our world-class publicly funded schools. I am active in the Federation of Portuguese Canadian Business & Professionals, the Greater Toronto Business Association and the European Union Chamber of Commerce in Toronto.

have worked for many years in the Davenport community as a teacher, social worker, and community organizer. I believe that politics should be about our communities and for our communities. I’ve been honoured to represent Davenport for the past three years as your MPP and advocate on issues that matter to you. I hope you will allow me to continue to do so.

Leadership in many programs key to SickKids >>>from page 1 nity newspapers across Toronto. You’ll find them all, gathered at http://bit.ly/ SeO3ai on the insidetoronto. com website. SickKids provides leadership in many programs aimed at creating a healthy lifestyle for youth, the stories of which you’ll find in either this edition or online. And leadership begins at the top. SickKids Foundation CEO and President Ted Garrard even shared his personal story online – a

compelling tale of a young person and how a sedentary lifestyle threatened his future health. In 2013, the number of visitors to our online story collection told us the work of SickKids was important to you. We know you’ll find this year’s collection just as compelling; just as sobering. Whether someone works at SickKids or someone works at this newspaper – we are all parents, grandparents or friends who need to encourage our youth to stay active

and make the investment in health today to help provide a long healthy life in the future. We hope you join us in supporting the cause of healthy, happy children. We encourage you to read this edition and visit the online collection of stories. Frankly, the health of our children is too important not to take an active role. Peter Haggert is editorin-chief of Metroland Media Toronto. He can be reached at phaggert@insidetoronto. com
