Special event parking now more Ex-pensive HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Attendees of special events at Exhibition Place will have to dig a little deeper into their pockets if they want to park on the grounds. Effective May 23 Exhibition Place raised its special events parking fee for select events with high demand to $30 from $25. The increase was approved by the board of governors during a meeting last Friday. “It’s not a terribly huge increase,” said Trinity-Spadina Councillor Mike Layton, who is in favour of the increase. “It seems logical; what are

we going to do, keep the rate the same for 50 years?” According to a board report put forward by staff at the meeting, the last parking increase was in 2009 with the new increase averaging about three per cent for each year since. Layton said this increase is a good way for Exhibition Place to stay competitive with parking rates for events in the city. “Parking is a huge revenue source for Exhibition Place when these events are put on,” Layton told The Villager. “Yes they charge for the event, but that doesn’t bring in a lot of revenue and we need to recapture it. Parkdale lawyers join in Nightwood Theatre fundraiser

Shakespeare’s romantic comedy Love’s Labour’s Lost set to run May 28 to 30 HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Once a year lawyers from across Toronto leave it all on the stage as they trade in their suits and briefcases for theatre frocks and participate in Nightwood Theatre’s annual fundraiser The Lawyer Show. “It’s amazing that this profession hides such hidden talent that you wouldn’t normally get to see,” said Heather Paterson, a municipal defense lawyer for the City of Toronto and Parkdale resident who is participating this year. For about two months, lawyers dissect text, rehearse lines and practice choreographed dance sequences with the help of the Nightwood Theatre crew. The show is also a fundraiser that helps improve future Nightwood Theatre productions and training programs. This year the cast of

36 lawyers will be taking on William Shakespeare’s romantic comedy Love’s Labour’s Lost May 28 to 30 at the Jane Mallett Theatre in the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts. The play tells the story of King Ferdinand and his three gentlemen who have sworn off women for three years of study; that is until a princess and her three ladies come to the court. Participating in this year’s play are Parkdale residents and lawyers Paterson and Melanie Herbin. For Herbin, a Queen and Bathurst resident and lawyer for the Ministry of Education, theatre comes more naturally; she graduated from the University of Windsor’s theatre program. She will be playing the character of Boyet, a servant to the princess and her crew of ladies, who have come to King Ferdinand’s court

and end up causing disruptions. “She’s an earthy character who brought up these young beautiful women, who get courted by the handsome men on the other side of this play.” This is her third year participating in The Lawyer Show and said she plans on participating in years to come. “It’s addictive; it’s truly, truly addictive,” Herbin said.

“It’s the fact that the directors and entire team that supports us are all professionals in theatre and they don’t let us get away with stuff. We don’t get ‘we know you’re just lawyers so we won’t be so hard on you.’ No, they push and push and get really good performances from people who don’t really have that much background in theatre.” This is Paterson’s fifth year participating in the show. The first time she saw the

show, she immediately asked herself one question: Why am I not doing this? “I used to do theatre in high school and I thought I need to be doing something creative outside of work,” Paterson explained. “I auditioned the next year and joined the chorus.” For Love’s Labour’s Lost, Paterson took on a smaller role of delivering a singing telegram at the end of the play this year due to her heavy caseload. She didn’t want to over commit, but admits that each year she chooses a role that challenges her in one way or another. “I’m a litigator, so it helps with having to stand up and speak in court,” she said. “And having to stand and speak Shakespeare gives you some great skills on handling nerves when going to court

and just in general public speaking.” She said participating in this production pushes her out of her comfort zone. Paterson said she is not one to draw attention to herself, but being part of these productions pushes her boundaries in ways not only shocking to her, but her colleagues, too. “The first time I did it, I played a goddess and I remember my colleagues coming up to me afterwards and saying ‘we don’t know what was more shocking, you up there singing or the fact that you were wearing a dress,” Paterson said. She added she thinks it’s important to do something you love outside of the office. “We work so hard as lawyers, I think having a creative outlet and something to look forward to doing that’s different from your everyday job is a huge piece of why I keep doing it,” Paterson said.

Pan Am Torch comes to town

G

et ready Toronto, the Pan Am Games Torch Relay is coming to town starting this Saturday. The flame was lit Monday in Mexico and is now on its way to Toronto. It splashes down with a special arrival ceremony celebration at the city’s harbourfront featuring a float plane, canoe and a ‘mystery’ first torch runner. For more details on this weekend’s plans for the torch, see our feature story on page 6. The torch relay goes from May 30 to July 10, and will touch Canadian communities from the Atlantic to the Pacific. More than 130 communities will be visited during the 41-day torch relay, with some 3,000 runners taking part. For local residents, most of the excitement will begin July 4 in the final days leadour view ing up to the opening ceremonies of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am on July 10. Relay to have Games After its visit to the harbourhuge impact front this Saturday, the torch will be carried to the Distillery in Ontario District by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield for a community celebration before heading out across Canada. During its journey, the torch will visit Richmond, B.C.; Calgary, Alberta, during the Stampede; Winnipeg, Manitoba, where Canada last hosted the Pan Am Games in 1999; and Halifax, Nova Scotia. It’s in Ontario, though, where the torch relay will have the biggest impact. Virtually every corner of the province will be visited, with community celebrations planned at numerous locations. As host city, Toronto will have a number of celebrations – with events planned specifically for Scarborough, North York, and Etobicoke in early July. On June 28, the torch will be in the city for the annual Pride Parade. Also, a unique event is set for July 4 at the Prince Edward Viaduct (also known as the Bloor Viaduct). The viaduct will be lit up to create a multicoloured effect on the Luminous Veil, which encases the famous bridge. Community groups including the Danforth BIA, which has incorporated its annual Thrill of the Grill event into the celebration, will be on the bridge to welcome the torch and the relay runners. Metroland Media Toronto will also be a big part of that celebration as we are hosting games and events for kids on the viaduct. The status of symbolism at city hall Symbolism counts for a lot in Toronto politics: certainly for more than it should. The Gardiner Expressway, which is really just a strip of elevated concrete and asphalt used by a few of Toronto’s many commuters, is also a symbolic battleground for suburban motorists and downtown pedestrians. Next month at council, that potent symbolism will go up against measly facts and mere expert opinion and more than likely end in council spending an extra $500 million to build new elevated ramps from the Gardiner to the Don Valley Parkway. Such is how it goes when councillors play to their home crowd: from a cynically political perspective, everyone on council will be a winner no matter the outcome. Of course, not all political symbolism at city hall is a slam dunk.

david nickle the city Some of these debates can be treacherous ones indeed – and some of them are very small. On Tuesday, Mayor John Tory’s generally right-ofcentre executive committee spent a good portion of a short meeting dancing around a symbolic leghold trap set by generally left-of-centre councillors Mike Layton and Glenn De Baeremaeker. The two had put forward a member’s motion to have council establish an “environmental bill of rights.” The motion contains many “rights” that very few voters would want to pass up: a right to breathe and drink clean air and water and eat safe food; access to nature; to know about pollutants and the right to take part in decision-making. It also lays responsibil-

ity on council to promote these rights, and by the by points to matters of policy that also have great symbolic value for political brands. Council would have to get behind cycling, walking and transit as a preferred way to get around. No fools, the committee members were not having any of it. Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong made it clear his constituents weren’t fond of pedestrian scrambles and other things they believed promoted congestion. Councillor David Shiner suggested his elderly constituents wouldn’t take kindly to being encouraged to walk and bicycle. But they weren’t about to vote it down - because oh, the symbolism of that would have been an embarrassment. Other municipalities – more than 50 of them according to Layton – had passed a simi-

lar bill of rights already. Sent it back So the committee did the sensible thing, and sent it off to the interim city manager for a report to come back late in the fall. Layton was disappointed at that prospect and, laying cards on the table, expressed hope it could come before the federal election. Because after all, it would be really something if Canada’s largest city could make it clear that its policies and practices were all aimed toward preserving the environment, just as Torontonians were set to join their fellow Canadians passing judgement on the environmentally dodgy Conservative government record. Now that would be what you would call symbolic.

Students rally behind teacher fighting cancer HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Hundreds of parents, teachers, students and former students gathered on the Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School field to honour and celebrate automotive and transportation technology teacher Randy Brown, who was recently diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancer. “This is overwhelming that somebody respects you this much in life,” Randy told The Villager from his desk in his auto shop. “I came here to do a job and do a job well and I’ve been so fortunate.” Randy broke the news of his illness to his colleagues about a week and a half ago in principal Derek Chen’s office. “We were all here balling our eyes out. It’s hard to hear the news that one of your own is fighting for his life. It’s tough,” said Chen.

“It was really touching because his department is made up mainly of men and to see all of them breaking down...it was so intense. I couldn’t hold it in. It got to me.” Randy said his illness has reached a “pretty serious point” and plans on heading to San Diego next week for a second opinion with oncologists. Randy is described as compassionate, inspirational and honest, but perhaps the most repeated character description is father figure and it wasn’t just in the classroom, it was everywhere. Rob Zarcone met Randy in 1988 when he was just 16 years old, when he used to work at a Goodyear store. Now 43 with a family of his own, Zarcone credits Randy for his push into the automotive industry where he is the supervisor of national technical support services for Honda Canada Inc. and also works on his own race

cars with Randy by his side as a team member. “He was my father figure,” Zarcone said, taking a moment to gather his emotions. “Randy never shied away from helping the entry level tech like myself at the time. He was concerned about developing the younger staff and just

talking to us. He truly wants everybody to succeed.” At the celebration, which featured music and a barbecue, Randy could be seen chatting with students and parents and community members, being embraced in long hugs. But as much a those in attendance were quick to sing

his praises, Randy was even quicker to sing those of his students despite any reputation they may have. “The kids in this neighbourhood are so fabulous it’s amazing. People always say bad things about the kids but it’s not true,” Randy said. “I don’t care how they dress, I don’t care what they say, we were all young once and we had our slang I’m sure our parents didn’t like some of the things we did and said. But they’re awesome kids that do an awesome job that are here to learn and move onto the next step.” Randy has been teaching at Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton since 1999 and there’s no shortage of people who have been touched by his caring nature and generosity as a teacher. His reach stretches beyond the classroom to influence and affect the lives of anyone who crosses his path, including co-workers, parents and local community members,

many of whom were present Wednesday afternoon to say thank you for his lessons both in life and in shop class. “He’s touched a lot of people and everyone who is coming today has a special connection with him,” Chen said. “He’s a special guy who draws people to him and he’s an outstanding educator.” St u d e n t s , b o t h p a s t and present, talk highly of Randy. Amanda Ruvio, 18, who is now a Ryerson University student, graduated last year and came back for the celebrations because Randy helped her learn how to change a tire and change the oil. “He’s just a good teacher. He won’t teach you the same way as someone else. He’ll teach you in a way that you’ll learn because it’s different for every kid,” Ruivo said. “He’ll make you interested in the class.

The Pan Am flame was lit Monday during a traditional ceremony in Teotihuacan, Mexico at the Pyramid of the Sun, which was organized and hosted by the Mexican Olympic Committee (MOC). A float plane carrying a flame lit inside a lantern will touch down in Lake Ontario Saturday, where it will be handed to Elder Garry Sault of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, who will then travel with the lantern by canoe to shore for a ceremony conducted by Chief Bryan LaForme at Harbourfront Centre. The first torchbearer – whose identity is being kept under wraps – will then leave Canada Square at Harbourfront Centre, where the torch will be passed to several bearers before Col. Rick Mugford: looking forward to sharing in the excitement HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com When Parkdale resident Rick Mugford found out he was chosen to be a torchbearer for the 2015 Toronto Pan Am/Parapan Am Games he was hit with a wave of emotions: disbelief, apprehension and nervousness. “I’m not very athletic.” Mugford laughed. “When I say I’m not athletic, I just mean I don’t train. I’m in the arts. I do creative things.” Mugford is an architect and interior designer at Zeidler Partnership

“I can assure you people that know me, who found out are like, ‘What? You? It seems a little out of character.’” When he told his parents he tried to downplay it, but his mother reassured him of the significance. “I said, well don’t get too carried away, there’s lots of people, thousands, that are going to be doing this. And my mom goes ‘but there are millions of people.’ She just put it into perspective.” The Strachan Avenue and Queen Street area resident will be carrying the torch on

Sunday, July 5 and said he plans to take up a little bit of running, so it won’t be a shock to his system. “I’ll have to do something because I don’t want to collapse halfway through,” he said. “I got to do a little bit of something and that makes me nervous... I don’t want to look like a total wienie.” For Mugford participating in something like this is an opportunity of a lifetime. “I’m looking forward to sharing in the upswell of excitement surrounding the Games. I want to be a

Top 5 Tips For Caregivers The Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) provides a variety of supports to those who are transitioning from hospital to home, and to those who need support to remain in their homes. The province of Ontario spends only approximately $2.1 billion on home-based health care (Ontario Home Care Association, 2014), however, this figure does not take into account the considerable support and assistance that is provided by informal caregivers. These people include family members, friends, and neighbours, all of whom are often faced with feelings of stress and are overwhelmed while caring for their loved ones. Fortunately, there are a few simple things that can help alleviate the stress that may be felt by those who are providing caregiving support in the home. Here are five suggestions for caregivers to make daily activities a little bit easier: 1) Accept Your Feelings – It’s normal for caregivers to have a range of feelings related to their roles. Anger, frustration, stress and anxiety are common emotions that occur when one is the primary caregiver for an elderly or ill loved one. Accept your feelings as normal and remember

that you’re not alone. 2) Have an outlet – Join a support group of other caregivers or speak regularly to a close family member or friend who will provide you with a sounding board for your emotions surrounding caregiving. Just knowing that someone is there to listen can make a world of difference. 3) Ask for help – Support from others for even the simplest things can go a long way when coping and providing caregiver support to a loved one. Oftentimes, asking for help can result in enough stress-relief to give you the emotional energy to keep going. 4) Take care of yourself – You’re no good to your loved one if you are not feeling up to par. Be sure to get plenty of rest, eat well and get out of the house whenever you can. 5) Connect With the Community – Be sure to look into community resources that can provide additional help and resources as you continue to support your loved one. For more information about supports and community services for seniors, contact the Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) at (416) 506-9888 or visit www.healthcareathome.ca.

HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com About 100 concerned members from Parkdale’s Tibetan community gathered at May Robinson Auditorium seeking answers about family members trying to survive in the aftermath of Nepal’s earthquake last month. To help answer those questions, Parkdale-High Park MP Peggy Nash in partnership with Parkdale Community Legal Services (PCLS) hosted a meeting with senior policy analyst Irena Nikolova with Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). “To have the opportunity to have a representative from CIC here is important,” Nash told The Villager. “For her to hear first-hand what the problems are and to see the number of people affected is very important for her. And the questions she’s getting will be taken back to Ottawa to get answered.” Nikolova was on hand during the Tuesday, May 19 meeting to notify residents affected by the earthquake of the new special immigration measures implemented to help with the processing of applications for Nepalese significantly or personally affected by the earthquake. According to Nikolova, CIC is screening its entire active caseload to identify applicants who have been affected by the

earthquake in Nepal, but only for those who have applied prior to the earthquake. For those affected postearthquake, she said, the department is providing priority processing upon request for visa applications of individuals who are in the affected areas in Nepal and to those who have been affected significantly and personally with emphasis on providing processing for spouses, partners, dependent children of Canadian citizens and permanent residents still in Nepal. “The definition of someone personally affected is if they “have lost an immediate family member such as a spouse, partner or dependent child; significant property and/or livelihood due

to the earthquake in Nepal,” Nikolova said. Throughout the course of the evening many people shared their situations. Many have relatives whose homes have collapsed, children out on the street with no access to schools as well as food and sanitation concerns. “There’s still a huge humanitarian need there. It just really puts a spotlight on the crisis and we’re trying to reach as many people in need as we can,” Nash said. “The earthquake just made a terrible situation much worse.”

Activist groups reclaiming land for public >>>from page 1 everything else in the city grows. For panelist Laura Reinsborough, founder of non-profit Not Far From The Tree, the idea begins at a most basic, organic level. Her fruit sharing project, where volunteers harvest fruit from trees in local residential properties and donate the bounty to local social services, is entering its eighth year. A simple concept, she said, that continues to have a profound impact. “It shifts our perspective when we eat from city soil,” said Reinsborough, who after considering the collaboration needed to harvest one tree, began to see the city not as separate lots but as a large urban orchard. Dissolving property lines have been one of her biggest takeaways. “In those few hours of picking that private space transforms; we’re unlocking the potential of sharing in the community,” said Reinsborough, who reported this year there are 600 registered trees on 1,300 properties. Rethinking the potential of underused space was the key to panelist Michelle Senayah’s project to transform the city’s nearly

2,400 public laneways. With the decreasing amount of outdoor space making it difficult to create more conventional public space, Senayah said it’s important to get residents engaged in the existing space. The Laneway Project, she said, now has online how-to guides on how to green laneway space, add a mural or even throw a party. “Use your space so it’s not overlooked,” Senayah urged the audience.

Connecting existing public space was also on the minds of other panelists: Emily Munroe of Open Streets TO, Helena Grdadolnik of the Green Line and James Gen Meers, of the Friends of the Pan Am Path. Grdadolnik’s mission to connect the often neglected Dupont hydro corridor into a five kilometre linear park was not about adding a few flowers here and there, but about “thinking of the park as a more holistic space.” Meers also hopes to activate

a nearly 80 km existing network of trails including the Humber, Waterfront and Lower Don trails with the Friends of the Pan Am Path. Currently hosting a 14-week Art Relay festival event, Meers said using the public space is not just about developing economic activity, but a chance to bring the expansive path to life and leveraging the diversity of the surrounding communities (more than 21 Wards are connecting with seven priority neighbourhoods). “This is just the beginning,” Meers said of the project, where construction will continue into 2017. Cycle Toronto has also expressed interest in the connections. The audience posed questions of accessibility and negotiating designated areas for cyclists and pedestrians to the panelists. Vaughan hoped the talk ultimately inspired a sense of ownership by the residents to make public space a larger, continued discussion. “We are trying to challenge this notion of how we activate and what responsibility we have over public space; it just takes one champion to open doors and move it forward,” Vaughan said.

>>>from page 1 opportunity to do that.” This increase would boost its revenue to $174,000 from $145,000 based on the maximum current parking inventory of 5,800 spaces. Not everyone on the board was in favour of the increase. Board member Councillor Jim Karygiannis, of Ward 39 Scarborough- Agincourt, voted against it because he believes it’s a gouge to event goers. “I think it’s a bit much. The $25 (rate) has been there a long time, I think people are used it. The events they have are expensive already,” Karygiannis said. “They compared (parking rates) to other places downtown, but just because private entrepreneurs are taking the prices that high I don’t think we should have done it as much.” Karygiannis added those

attending these events are young people who live in the suburbs and getting to the city and back without a car is no easy feat. “ When you go down there from my part of the world (Scarborough), these things finish at 1 a.m., and good luck getting out to Scarborough,” Karygiannis told The Villager. “As a parent I wouldn’t want my daughter walking on the street. I’d say take your car.” However, Layton sees the increase as another opportunity to push attendees to possibly motivate people to find another mode of transportation to the event such as transit. “We’ve got to be encouraging that (the use of public transportation) where we can. It has the side benefit of encouraging people who can take transit to take it. There are great transit options for

Exhibition Place; you have a GO train station right at the heart of it,” Layton said, “So why would we subsidize drivers by keeping low parking rates and yet not give enticement to take public transit. That’s backwards thinking and backwards logic.” Layton added those who live close enough to take transit, but still drive are taking spots away from those who live a distance away from the event and have no choice, but to drive and pay to park. “So why not make lives easier for those people,” Layton said. “They’re taking up much needed parking spots and we have a parking issue down there. We don’t have a lot of it...You may as well make it competitive.”

Available Bachelorette Kendra is a beautiful 40 year-old young-atheart medical assistant. She is financially stable, and owns her own home. She’s a sweet person who likes to dress up, take care of herself and those around her. She is very active, fun and outgoing. She goes to the gym everyday; she enjoys keeping fit, skiing, and traveling. She owns a motorcycle that she loves to ride, and loves cars as well. Growing up she helped her dad fix up cars in his garage. Kendra enjoys road trips, playing volleyball, going to concerts, and spending lots of time on the beach in the summer. She loves going out dancing with friends, out to dinner, to movies and shopping. She’s watched friends find partners, get married, and have children, while she is still single. She’s tired of being a third wheel when she goes out with friends, and is looking for someone special to fit her lifestyle. Kendra’s tried meeting people at bars and clubs, but they weren’t right for her. She tried online dating, but it was a disaster. Kendra joined our service because she wants someone who is serious and genuine about having a lasting relationship, who is compatible with her, respectful, kind, and her financial equal; someone she can spend her life with. Torch relay starts Saturday, May 30 The Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games’ torch arrives in Toronto Saturday for the start of the 41-day Torch Relay. A float plane carrying a lit flame inside a lantern will touch down on Lake Ontario near Toronto’s waterfront, where it will be handed to an Elder of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation, who will then travel by canoe for a ceremony by Chief Bryan LaForme at Harbourfront Centre. The flame for the torch was lit Monday during a ceremony at the Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico. The torch will be passed to several bearers before Col. Chris Hadfield will run with it into The Distillery District. Celebrations are scheduled to end around 6:30 p.m.
