More so than ever before, St. Joseph’s Health Centre has reached out to the community it serves for comprehensive input into creating the hospital’s fiveyear strategic plan. Looking ahead to the year 2020, the five-year plan seeks to redefine its role as a health centre for the 21st century while outlining three new strategic priorities, highlighting success factors and a renewed vision. Titled The St. Joe’s Difference: Community, the priorities include, creating seamless care transitions; delivering “an exceptional” experience; and shaping care through teaching and education. The hospital sought input from thousands of people in the west end of Toronto as well as from its staff through an initial survey and then through a ‘community reference panel’ comprised of 36 individuals, a first-ever approach for the hospital in engaging with its patients, families and local residents. “To better understand what we’re doing we decided, let’s get input from our patients,” Elizabeth Buller, president and CEO, told The Villager.
