The design team that will help transform 7.5 acres of Ontario Place into an urban park and waterfront trail has been chosen. LANDinc, in partnership with West 8, will design the new green space at the east island. “With a high-calibre and distinguished design team selected, we are moving forward to re-imagine and revitalize the Ontario Place site,” Michael Chan, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport said in a press release. “I encourage people across the province to offer their ideas so that together, with our partners and design team, we can best meet the public’s needs and support long-term revitalization of the waterfront.” The province is inviting residents to contribute their ideas and vision for the park and trail online or at one of four public meetings, the first of which is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. CAMH Foundation launches Gifts of Light campaign ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Dianne, a client at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health’s Archway Outpatient clinic in Parkdale, explained that for her and many of her peers, a ‘Gift of Light’ is the only gift received during the holiday season. Gifts of Light, CAMH’s annual giving campaign, gives supporters an opportunity to help brighten the lives of patients, restore dignity, offer hope and promote healing, by purchasing gifts for CAMH clients. “The Gifts of Light has made it possible for many of us at Archway to truly have a merry Christmas,” Dianne said at the launch of the 2013 campaign. “The Gifts of Light provide comfort by delivering gifts and hope to those who
are in great need.” Last year, Dianne said, she received a bag of quality items like a hat, gloves and scarf as well as toiletries. “It made me happy inside to know that people such as yourselves actually care,” Dianne said. “We are all grateful to the Gifts of Light, for those of us who would otherwise feel downhearted at Christmas time, your gifts are well appreciated.” CAMH FOUNDATION The CAMH Foundation launched its sixth annual gift-giving campaign on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at its Bell Gateway Building at the CAMH hub on Queen Street West. Broadcaster Valerie Pringle and actor Zaib Shaikh hosted the event and the Archway Clinic Music Group
performed as well as Canadian Idol winner Eva Avila. How the campaign works is that when people select a gift to purchase, the foundation will provide them with a card which they can send to a friend or loved one letting them know that, in their name, a client at CAMH will receive a gift. Those gifts are delivered to CAMH patients by volunteers. Gifts of Light are priced at $10 and up. They fall into three categories: Gifts of the Heart, which includes items like hats, mittens, socks and pajamas; Gifts of Hope, which includes items like toothbrushes, shampoo, books, puzzles and even dental treatments; and Gifts of Healing, which includes phone calling cards, personal hygiene items and care bundles. “There is so much choice

this year for gifts of caring, support and love,” Pringle said. “It is a perfect connection between the world outside and the people inside CAMH receiving treatment
and care.” During the holiday season volunteers then deliver the gifts to patients, both inpatient and out patient. Last year, supporters of Gifts of Light enabled 1,700 patients to receive a gift. This year the goal is to deliver 2,000 gifts. In addition to the increasing number of gift recipients, the array of gifts has expanded since Gifts of Light was started six years ago. This year a holiday gift guide allows people to peruse a catalogue of gifts and make a selection, which they can purchase to celebrate a person or occasion with a truly unique gift. Donna Slaight, Gifts of Light committee chair, explained the catalogue of gifts has evolved after hearing back from staff and clients about what they saw as a need. Slaight said she hopes the
catalogue will make it even more appealing for givers to sift through and personalize their selection. In February, 2014 the CAMH Foundation will roll out their Gifts of Comfort, year-round, which people can purchase for occasions like Valentines Day, Mother’s Day and birthdays. These gifts will be given to patients arriving at CAMH. “Most often when someone is admitted from emergency to CAMH it is under difficult circumstances,” Slaight said. “Sometimes when they arrive here they have nothing but a blue gown, so we will give them toiletries, personal care items.” Gifts of Light can be purchased online at www. camhgiftsofflight.ca or by calling 416-979-6909.

St. Joe’s welcomes workers’ kids for annual Grade 9 day LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Julia Sliska wants to follow in her mother’s footsteps – so she took her first step by participating in St. Joseph’s Health Centre’s ‘Take Our Kids to Work Day.’ “My mom was a nurse,” said Julia as she worked on making a splint as part of a morning workshop at the hospital on Wednesday, Nov. 6. Occupational therapist Antoinette Krakovsky, who works with patients who have suffered hand injuries from broken thumbs or wrists to those who have lost a finger or damaged nerves, showed the Grade 9 students how to make different kinds of splints, first by cutting a pattern and then molding the warm plaster around the particular body part before
strapping it on with Velcro. “You only have a certain amount of working time (before it cools),” she advised. As many as 40 students from across the city whose parents or guardians work at St. Joe’s got a taste of the hospital’s many services from occupational therapy to respiratory therapy to adolescent mental health and the ER as well as the public affairs department, diagnostic imaging and volunteer services. Under the guidance of respiratory therapist Sarah Enriqez, students were shown how to insert a breathing tube, which teen Rhiannon Gershbach admitted was tricky. “I thought it was difficult. It takes a lot of experience,” said Rhiannon, whose mother works in triage, in the ER.

for their emotional ones as well, said social worker Jamie McMillan, who works in the hospital’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit. The unit is comprised of a classroom, bedrooms and activity room. Patients are admitted through the emergency department and are assessed by a psychiatrist. They may be suicidal or suffered a drug overdose, explained Allan Brinkert, patient care manager, who spoke to the teens about bullying and depression. The 11th annual event links high school students
with some of the hospital’s frontline health-care professionals in a day of learning and interactive presentations, said spokesperson Michelle Tadique. “Over the years, we’ve done a few different formats. We want the presentations to be interactive and hands-on,” she said. For teens who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine, it’s a chance to find out what kind of education they need. The day, which began at 9 a.m. and ended at 4 p.m., was comprised of interactive sessions and a ‘Day in the life of surgery.’ Take Our Kids to Work Day is a national event – with thousands of students and workplaces taking part.

n today’s Parkdale Villager and on our website at www.parkdalevillager.com, you’ll find the start of a multi-week feature all about youth suicide. It’s unusual we devote such space to a social problem. The fact is, this is a critical social issue and a problem that deserves public attention. The series is appearing in Metroland newspapers throughout Ontario and is the result of the work of a variety of reporters across the province, aided by the thoughts of experts on the subject, who helped shape the stories and the focus of our efforts. We think if you are a parent you should take the time to read the feature. Far too often, parents are surprised by a suicide. We hope that by providing this information, we will have provided an opportunity to reverse our view that possibility for young people in our community. Our aim is to In this series, we hope to give you an idea just how large a problem have fewer youth suicide is, help identify trends a youth’s life to watch for that can families left in lead to suicidal thoughts, provide a list of resources where one can behind find help or more information and – most of all – to help our community’s parents and youth understand there is hope. There is a bright future for all youth. And it sometimes takes a community to help youth understand what the future holds. We sincerely hope one legacy of this project is to inform parents and give them the power and support needed to identify and help a youth in trouble. There’s a legacy for the media, too, here. Reporting on individual suicide has always been an informal taboo. But as those involved with the project thought about it, we all realized we’ve been touched by suicide in our personal lives. Suicide is more prevalent than sometimes we’d like to believe. And that makes it an issue worth bringing front-of-mind as a necessity for community discussion. Nov. 23 is International Survivors of Suicide Day – a day to recognize the families left behind. This feature series envelops that day and we hope we’re able to present a toolbox of opportunity, so ultimately there are fewer families left behind, and more youth leading wonderful, adventurous and unexpectedly full lives.

Minnan-Wong must consider risks of running for mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong has been around the block. I know this because he got his start on North York council shortly after I got my start covering city politics, in the early 1990s. He wasn’t elected, initially; North York Council appointed him to fill the seat left vacant with the passing of former councillor Barry Burton. Unlike other candidates for the appointment, Minnan-Wong would not promise to stay out of the next election. Why should he? he argued. If he did a good job in the remaining months of the term, he’d like to be re-elected. It was refreshing candor. North York council was at that time filled with councillors who’d lied about their intentions after taking appointments and become fixtures. Minnan-Wong, a young and committed Progressive Conservative operative, at least wore his ambition on his sleeve. I had to hand it
david nickle the city to him. A couple decades later, a somewhat more cautious Minnan-Wong edges toward committing to a mayoralty run. Faceoff A longtime member of Mayor Rob Ford’s cabinetlike executive committee, he started this week at loggerheads with the mayor over his crack-smoking, hard-drinking lifestyle. Between the time I write this and the time you read this, the two will have faced off on the floor of Toronto council. But Tuesday, MinnanWong made it clear he is seriously considering a more serious faceoff: namely, taking on Ford and others in the 2014 election for the mayoralty. It’s a serious consid-
eration. In early polls, Minnan-Wong’s not been much of a factor. The fantasy-football mayor’s race has been dominated by Olivia Chow, Ford, Karen Stintz and John Tory. With ex-Scarborough councillor David Soknacki already having declared his interest along with Ford and Stintz, the rightof-centre ballot is already crowded. If Tory decides to run, it’ll be a crowded pack, running against what so far seems to be a more disciplined ticket on the left, supporting Chow. If Minnan-Wong runs and loses, it will mean at least a pause in a long political career, and possibly the end of it. And it could mean having contributed to a left-of-centre Chow mayoralty – a continuation of the Miller administration that Minnan-Wong so consistently opposed. On the other hand, the timing has never been
better for Minnan-Wong. Stintz has made bigger headlines chairing the TTC, but Minnan-Wong has been working hard on the city’s public works and infrastructure committee on smaller issues. He’s killed bike lanes – on Jarvis and in Scarborough – and pioneered others including the new separated lanes on Sherbourne. He’s on record as at least trying to get ahead of the problems with the Gardiner Expressway. And while he’s been a loyal soldier for the mayor for most of three years, he’s taken his step away at a time that even many of Ford’s supporters would see as appropriate. All that gives MinnanWong a shot at being mayor. The question he’s got to ask is whether that shot is worth putting at risk pretty much everything else.

Public invited for input Line-ups for Ford bobblehead doll >>>from page 1 a board of directors. It opened in 1971 and was shut down in February 2012, with the exception of the marina, The Molson Canadian Amphitheatre and Echo Beach, Atlantis Pavilion and the parking lots. Since 1990 there has been much discussion about the future of the grounds. An advisory panel – led by former provincial Progressive Conservative party leader John Tory – released 18 recommendations in June of 2012. In June of 2013 the province announced it was moving forward with the revitalization of
the 155-acre waterfront park, by transforming a parking lot near the administrative building into a new public park and waterfront trail. Once complete, the new urban park and waterfront trail will link to the existing 780 kilometre waterfront trail system – stretching from Niagara-on-the-Lake to east of Cornwall. It will also give residents and visitors access to part of the waterfront that has been closed to the public for more than 40 years.

DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Enthusiastic supporters, sneering opponents and curious collectors of bobble-headed dolls filled Toronto City Hall’s rotunda Tuesday, waiting for Mayor Rob Ford to sell them a souvenir Rob Ford doll. The dolls were on sale for $20, with a portion of the take going to the city’s United Way fundraising drive. While the dolls were to go on sale at 9 a.m., volunteers and staff members didn’t show up with boxes until just before 10:30 a.m..
The most faithful were there to get in line for 6 a.m. One of the first was Scarborough locksmith John Rowland, who arrived shortly after that. “I think most people here are Rob Ford fans,” he said. “They’re here to show their support for his fiscal responsibility, the job he’s been doing here at city hall and hopefully to help him get past the trouble he’s been having in his personal life.” Rowland said the troubles – which include an admission by Ford of having smoked crack cocaine “in a drunken stupor,” and a new video showing a frenetic Ford talking about
committing “first degree murder” and other acts of violence– haven’t impacted his support. “It makes him a real person,” he said. “Everyone has problems. He’s finally admitted, seems to be getting the help for this.” Yesterday Ford was scheduled to face council, and a motion from Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong, demanding that the mayor apologize and to take a leave of absence to deal with his addiction issues.

Construction begins on new Sunnyside Bike Park LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Construction has begun on the long-awaited and eagerly anticipated Sunnyside Bike Park. The bike park will be situated on a stretch of land north of Lake Shore Boulevard West, between Ellis Avenue and Colborne Lodge Drive, according to the City of Toronto’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation department. “We are expecting to do some preliminary work on site this week and next,” said Scott Laver, natural environment specialist on Monday, Nov. 4. “We are working on a detailed schedule with the contractor this week, but we do expect to get things underway as early as Thursday or Friday.”
Bicycle Motorcross and mountain bike riders played an integral role in the design of the park, which will be used for off-road cycling and skill building and is expected to attract riders from across the city and beyond. The park will be comprised of a skills trail, pump tracks, a variety of jump lines and a large drop and wall ride. Amenities will include benches, picnic tables, drinking fountains and gathering areas in anticipation of families and those who have yet to try off-road cycling. “We are aiming to have phase one of the park (the riding features) opened by next spring. Phase two (driveway entrance and other park amenities) will be completed by the end of 2014,” said Laver. Initially proposed for the parking lot in the southeast
corner of High Park, Laver said the strip of land between the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore Boulevard was a better fit for its larger size, its accessibility and visibility. Even though surrounded by roadways, there are still lots of trees and shade, said Laver, making it feel like being immersed in nature. The new park was designed by the internationally acclaimed Jay Hoots of Hoots Inc. – a world leader in the design of communitybased bike skill parks and trail systems – with input from BMX and mountain bike riders at a consultation meeting held in October. The 5,000-square-metre park will accommodate 100 riders at one time, Hoots said.

There’s another way out By Laurie Watt and Janis Ramsay
The first instalment of our series sheds light on the serious issue of youth suicide and its prevalence, in the hope that awareness can aid suicide prevention

As soon as I took my hand off his chest, I said ‘OK, he’s cold.’ I lifted my hand and said ‘I accept.’ That was it. You can’t do anything more about death.” Her son was Alex Clarke, an 18-year-old who loved the outdoors, who committed suicide June 11 leaving behind his mom, sister, a girlfriend, many relatives, lots of friends and a job. The death of a child is a parent’s worst nightmare. Kari and Ken Smith can understand the devastation suicide can
cause. When their 17-yearold son, Cody, failed to show up at the breakfast table one February morning, the couple realized something was amiss and went upstairs to investigate. “My husband went up fi rst and I heard him screaming ‘no, no, no’ and then I remember screaming so loud and for so long,” Kari said. The reason why still torments the Smiths. “He was very strong willed. We thought he had a great future. He talked about this future. I had no idea he couldn’t help himself. Why couldn’t he come to us? “He was our everything!” These parents are not alone in their anguish.
Each week, three Ontario teens end their lives, Children’s Mental Health Ontario (CMHO) reports. CMHO has represented and supported the providers of child and youth mental health treatment services throughout Ontario since 1972. Its core membership consists of more than 80 community-based children’s mental health centres that serve some 150,000 children and their families annually. Nationwide, there are 10 teens who kill themselves weekly and, for each one, there may be another 200 who attempt suicide, according to University of Ottawa research. In 2012, Kids’ Help Phone reported six per cent of the 5,000 calls received each week – which amounts to 300 calls – were related to suicide. Those considering suicide, youth affected by a suicide in their school or community, and those worried

Most kids are able to deal with it and move on, but some kids are vulnerable because they don’t have the confidence and skills to take it in stride or bounce back,” Floyd said. There is hope. The key for parents is to raise a resilient child, who can cope with the bumps and bruises along the way, and grow into a resilient adult who can deal with the stresses of working in uncertain times, he said. Many mental health issues emerge before age 20. Ontario acknowledged this two years ago with a $257-million mental health strategy for children, which aims to address the long waiting lists by bolstering not only community supports but linking mental health nurses with schools. The earlier an individual can get help, the better chances he will acquire the tools he needs to be resilient enough to cope with his struggles. “Suicide is the end point for people whose mental health needs were not appropriately addressed,” Floyd said. “We have to get over the squeamishness about raising the possibility there’s a mental health issue at play and have the very focused deliberate outreach to the person who is struggling, to give them an opportunity to talk and give us the opportunity to connect them with the help they need.”

Maddie is now laughing and talking with her brother instead of fighting with him, doing homework with her dad and hiking and doing photography with her mom. The family has put a lot of effort into spending time together and keeping communication open. “Listen to what your children are saying and always be there to support them,” Maddie’s mother said. “Hang in there, there is light at the end of the tunnel and if you can get through it together things will turn out.” Maddie has pruned her Facebook friends from more than 300 to 92, most of them relatives, and has changed her phone number. She changed schools in September, and once again loves waking up for classes. She is working to become a peer tutor at school, where one of the things she will be trained to do is help other students who are facing grief or suicidal thoughts. “No one should ever be afraid to need help,” she said. “People may judge you, but once you get help you’ll be able to ignore judgment. Artscape Youngplace will provide a community for artists ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com “It’s a tired old story about artists and urban development, that is retold in cities all over the world,” said Tim Jones, president and CEO of Artscape. “Artists move in and bring all sorts of vibrancy and then invariably because they are renters rather then owners they get priced out as devel-
opment is attracted.” But, in West Queen West, exactly the opposite is happening, thanks in large part to projects like Artscape Youngplace, which officially opens Nov. 20. “What is happening in West Queen West is atypical of any other place in the world where there is an arts building boom that is coinciding with the residential development,”
Jones said. “There is a huge amount of creative space being built here.” When the Queen West Triangle exploded in controversy over development a number of years ago, people feared it was the beginning of the end for artists in the neighbourhood, Jones explained. “But, I think (this area) is establishing itself as the epi-

centre of contemporary art in Canada,” Jones said. From the four projects Artscape has in the neighbourhood – the new Youngplace; Artscape West Queen West, the city’s first legal artist live/ work space; Parkdale Arts & Cultural Centre, a community cultural hub; and Artscape Triangle Lofts, an innovative below-market ownership and rental artist live/work space – to places like the Theatre Centre, the Gladstone Hotel, the new Toronto Media Arts Cluster and the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, it has been all but ensured that space is in place for artists to remain rooted in the area for the long term. After sitting vacant for more than a decade, the former Shaw Street School has undergone a $17-million transformation to become a new community cultural hub. At 75,000 square feet, Artscape Youngplace is the largest project in Artscape’s 27-year history.
Artscape Youngplace will provide production, rehearsal and exhibition space for individual artists and organizations, with a mix of private, shared and public spaces. Some of the organizations will own their space, while some rent below market and others at market. Organizations making a home in the building include SKETCH Working Arts, Luminato Festival, Koffler Gallery and Koffler Centre of the Arts, Centre for Indigenous Theatre, and a number of individual artists among others. This facility is also meant to be a place for the community to gather, explore, learn and exchange ideas. In addition to artist studios and programming spaces, the building will provide a number of public spaces, like The Hallway Galleries. These will offer public exhibition space in the large corridors at the building, spanning 9,000 square feet of hallway and stairwell space
on three floors. The Urban Living Room will be a place for people to come into during the daytime, hook into Wi-Fi and visit The Youngplace Coffee Pub. In the evening there will be more active programming in the space. “We are working with a local firm and some local industrial designers to outfit the space with furnishings,” said Liz Kohn, Director of Communications for Artscape. “To make it feel really warm and kind of fun.” A Flex Studios program offers pay-as-you-go creative workspace meant for visual artists, designers, performers, writers, curators, producers and creative practitioners. People can become members and then rent out a space for four-hour blocks. The opening exhibitions of the Artscape Youngplace Hallway Galleries is titled Unarchive and Stairmasters.

public input sought wA provincial in metrolinx review monitoring board is set to undertake a full review of Metrolinx’s operations. The Standing Committee on Government Agencies chaired by Scarborough Southwest Liberal MPP Lorenzo Berardinetti reports directly to the provincial Legislature on improving the performance of government departments such as Metrolinx. The committee has
scheduled four upcoming review meetings to discuss Metrolinx’s performance and how well it has fulfilled its mandate to improve transit in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). It’s calling for written submissions from residents in support or against the transit planning agency. To participate, send a written submission to the Committee Clerk, Room 1405, Whitney Block/ Bureau 1405, Queen’s Park,
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT M7A 1A2. Phone submissions can be made to 416325-3515. Expressway wTheGardiner criteria list study team examining options for the future configuration of the elevated sections of the Gardiner Expressway released an extensive list of criteria it
will use to make its final recommendations for the roadway. Made up of city and Waterfront Toronto planners, the Gardiner East team is completing a provincial environmental assessment to determine if the elevated portion of the Gardiner should be replaced, maintained, renovated or removed entirely in the future. It will choose a single option to present to city council for future approval.
The list of criteria, which is available online at www. gardinereast.ca, includes providing greater access to the waterfront, creating opportunities for commercial development and improving green space and is based on feedback taken from two public consultations from earlier this year. transit wTheProvincial funding welcomed provincial government released its fall economic statement last week and
indicated it will create a new investment fund to benefit infrastructure such as public transit. Count the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance among groups showing support for the initiative. The advocacy group said it was encouraged by the decision to establish the Trillium Fund. Rahul Gupta is the Villager’s transit reporter. His column runs Thursdays. Reach him on Twitter: @TOinTRANSIT
