Park celebrates grand reopening MARK A. CADIZ mcadiz@insidetoronto.com The McCormick Park Café officially opened its doors to a packed crowd in Brockton Village near Dundas Street West and Sheridan Avenue. Run out of a 20-foot ship-

ping container the café is the first of its kind in a city park. Grassroots organizations Friends of McCormick Park and the Aangen Community Centre teamed up to help rejuvenate the park’s role in the community. “I think it’s a huge boom

for the neighbourhood. It will encourage people who don’t normally come to the park, while encouraging others to stay longer and use the green space in different ways,” said Jennifer Cypher from Friends of McCormick Park, a small group of residents who advocate for

the park and community. Identifying a need, both organizations have been working tirelessly to launch the pilot project which also involved the refurbishing of playground structures as part of the larger initiative to activate the park >>>INITIATIVE, page 10

Metrolinx has collaborated with the City of Toronto’s StreetARToronto (StART) program and two local artists to create public art displays along its Georgetown South Project rail corridor. The first in the series of 14 was officially unveiled Saturday at the Strachan Avenue overpass during one of the community events that Metrolinx is hosting across the corridor. “Metrolinx understands the Georgetown South Project is being built next to communities where people live and work. It is important that, with a legacy of improved transit, we add to the livability of communities in which we work and serve,” said Metrolinx spokesperson Malon Edwards. “Public art is an opportunity to add to the fabric of a community through an engaging artistic display.” Metrolinx initially approached the city last year to discuss a partnership to help beautify the neighbourhoods it works in through public art displays. >>>from page 1 Interest for the Douro Street Retaining Wall Public Art Display’ was released in May. Metrolinx received submissions from 22 artists. The art submissions were short-listed to four by an initial selection committee comprised of two Metrolinx representatives and one representative from the City of Toronto’s StreetARToronto program. The provincial transit agency sought input from the community during a public meeting June 25 when the short-listed artists presented their concepts. Based on community feedback, the four finalists then tweaked their final submissions, Edwards said. The winning artists Misha Hunter and Ryan Dineen were chosen using several criteria, including the quality and originality of the artwork, logistics for completing the artwork and community response to the work as well as how well the feedback was reflected in the final artwork.

Artists Misha Hunter and Ryan Dineen have created murals for the Strachan Avenue overpass, unveiled Sept. 27.

The selection committee, said Edwards, asked for the expertise of two public art experts to make the final decision. ‘Carte blanche’ “We had carte blanche to do something that fit the area,” said Hunter, whose studio is in the Junction. “We wanted to do a more mo der n co nte mpo rar y design, a mural with topo-

graphic elements.” The mural is comprised of a three-dimensional element made of wood, which has never been done in the city before, said Hunter, who has worked with Business Improvement Areas across the city. The $1 million project aims to enhance the public realm in the communities along the 20-kilometre stretch of the Georgetown South Project corridor.

Island airport expansion key issue in Ward 20 Council hopefuls on both sides of debate weigh in on pros and cons of Billy Bishop JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Of the many issues facing candidates in Ward 20 (Trinity-Spadina) as they vie for the council seat last filled by Adam Vaughan, the debate over the expansion of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is sure to be one of the most contentious. Many residents, particularly those in the southern portion of the ward, have been staunchly opposed to the possible expansion of the airport. That group has been extremely vocal over the possibility of jets flying in and out of the island airport, citing noise, pollution, environmental impact, a massive change to the fastredeveloping waterfront and other concerns. The pro-expansion group may be less vocal, but there are undoubtedly those who see perks to expanding the airport, including better travel opportunities and economic benefits to the city. Toronto City Council heard both sides of the debate this spring and opted for more information before voting unanimously to allow for further negotiations that might – but might not – lead to the airport’s expansion. Ward 20 candidate Anshul Kapoor has been one of the leading opponents of the expansion. He started NoJetsTO (www.nojetsto. ca) and served as its chair before choosing to run for council. He said the fight isn’t simply about noise, but about urban planning and the future of the city’s waterfront. “The message from the pro side is that this issue only impacts the neighbourhood and that the impact won’t be that big,” he said. “The alarming impact that’s not being looked at is the generational impact.” Kapoor pointed to the port lands, which is in the midst of a massive redevelopment, as the future direction the city ought to take when it comes to waterfront redevelopment. “Toronto was founded as a waterfront city and the cultural and economic

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport has been a contentious issue across the city, but in Ward 20 it will come into play during the Oct. 27 election.

impact of the area has to be understood,” he said. “Toronto’s the only city in the world that has an airport on its central waterfront and there’s a reason other cities don’t have that.” He added expansion of the airport would affect more than just Ward 20 residents, claiming it would reduce the usability of the city’s waterfront for visitors from outside the ward and the city. Fellow candidate Joe Cressy has also long opposed the expansion of the airport, fighting the airport bridge and subsequent expansion plans for more than a decade. “There are a lot of reasons I’m opposed to expansion, from congestion to environmental and health concerns, but the biggest one is the waterfront revitalization,” he said. “We’re creating a large, diverse waterfront that’s not compatible with an expanded airport.” He noted, at present, the waterfront is the second-

largest destination for visitors to the city, behind only the Eaton Centre. He h o p e s to see the waterfront overtake the popular shopping centre and continue to grow as an economic and tourist hub. “We want to be a waterfront city,” he said. “The revitalization isn’t a one-off deal. Waterfront Toronto has a plan – look at the wave decks, Cherry and Sugar beach, Corktown Commons and the port lands.” While most of the candidates running in Ward 20 have expressed concerns – if not outright opposition – to the notion of island airport expansion, those vying to replace Vaughan are not unanimous on that front. Candidate Sam Goldstein is of the mind that further dis-

cussion on the matter is warranted. While he would not be in favour of large jets flying in and out of the airport expansion, he said framing the argument that way is misleading. “No one wants 747s landing at Billy Bishop, but that’s not what the discussion’s about,” he said. “It’s ‘how can we have improvements that fit into the existing framework?’” Goldstein uses the island airport often for travel and said he would like to push forward discussion around improvements that would make the existing airport more user-friendly. “The biggest problem there right now is parking,” he said. “The previous councillors created parking problems there ...’” He added that a health report by the City of Toronto

shows the pollution caused by the island airport causes no more health problems than that caused by traffic on the Gardiner Expressway. He said a “very vocal group of NIMBYists” is leading the charge to ensure the airport cannot be upgraded or expanded, and cited the benefits the airport brings. “It employs 5,400 people and brings in $9 million in taxes that go toward the social services we need in the city,” he said. Fellow candidate Charles MacDonald is in favour of expanding the airport, citing benefits brought not only to the city as a whole, but to Trinity-Spadina in particular. “I think it’s a wonderful economic development opportunity for Ward 20 and its businesses and shops,” he said. “It’s a chance for jobs and tourists to come into Ward 20 and it’s our gateway into the global economy.”

MacDonald added he is in favour of full expansion of the airport as proposed by Porter, saying it would provide far better travel opportunities for downtown residents. He acknowledges he has encountered some opposition to the prospect of airport expansion in canvassing his Ward 20 neighbours, but said most of those with whom he has spoken agree the expansion would be a positive. “Folks here, just like myself, want to be able to walk (around Los Angeles) and they want people from L.A. to be able to walk into their shops, their theatres and their restaurants,” he said. With the city’s decision on the possible airport expansion yet to come, whoever claims the council seat in Trinity-Spadina will have a strong voice in determining the airport’s culture.

T

he power of social media is too often taken for granted. It allows an easy avenue for people to cast judgment in a way they can’t in person. It takes no effort and yet, the consequences of that cast stone can be devastating. Last week a woman wrote a post on her facebook page complaining about a rude transit rider on a TTC bus who wouldn’t move his bag to let her sit down. He swore at her, made an obscene gesture and allegedly stomped on her foot. She also posted a photo of the man she took with her phone. The post went viral and was viewed thousands of times in only a few hours. People were outraged. As happens when things go viral, the media picked it up and our view once the story broke, another transit rider came forward with Everyone a video of the interaction. It was posted to YouTube and some said makes they’d try to find the man dubbed the ‘transit leprechaun’ because mistakes of the bowler hat and green shirt he was wearing. It was public shaming the only way social media can deliver it: fast, brutal and with little to no consequence of its impact. Thousands of angry people with their finger pointed at one man. We’re not writing in defence of this transit rider. Rather, we hope to caution people before they cast judgment in such a public sphere. Things have a way of sticking online. Everything is public. Don’t trust your privacy settings. Consider the TTC driver who lost her job this summer after a video was posted showing her bus running a red light and nearly hitting a pedestrian. Before anyone knew anything about her, she was publicly shamed in a similar manner. After it was discovered she was a single mom of two and that she lost her job over the incident, the man who posted the video said if he had known that would have been the consequence, he never would have made it public. Whatever this man’s done, his punishment has surely been dealt. We may not know him, but certainly his friends, family and employer have recognized him by now. Perhaps he deserved this, perhaps he just made a mistake. It’s not for us to say – but when it’s said online, it speaks deafening volumes.

Imagining what a Doug Ford mayoralty would be like John Tory is to be the next mayor of Toronto. All the polls point to this as the likely outcome and have for some time. So why, then, don’t we all just relax, enjoy the fall season of new television and wait for an affable and uneventful four years? Well, for one thing, there are still three and a half weeks to go until election day, and anything could happen. And for another, based on the polls, the secondmost likely thing to happen is that Doug Ford somehow wrestles the lead away from Tory and is elected the fourth mayor of amalgamated Toronto. It is not such a remote possibility; those same polls that show Tory so far ahead show the label-making councillor for Ward 2 in second place. And most of them were taken when Ford was behaving – how shall we put this? – like a bit of a jerk. If Ford puts on his candi-

david nickle the city date pants, keeps it civil and plays it right, a Ford mayoralty is a possibility. How would we cope with such an eventuality? Well, we can look back at his brother’s victory four years ago – where many of us simply stared slack-jawed as Don Cherry kicked of the inaugural council meeting and Rob Ford announced the end of light rail transit. Some happy few of us simply hoped for the best. No doubt they slept better, dreaming of stalled gravy trains and tax cuts and shining subways. In that spirit, I thought today we might, as a (positive) thought experiment, imagine what the very best possible scenario is for a Doug Ford mayoralty. So, looking on the bright, half-full-not-half-empty side of life, we might hope for a few things:

• We’ll likely see longer press availabilities and more of them. Unlike his younger brother, Doug Ford has not been shy about talking, and sometimes hollering, in front of cameras. There will never be a question of asking Mayor Doug Ford the wrong question. All the questions will be wrong, and he will tell us why. • The Ferris wheel will be back. Well, maybe not the Ferris wheel, but expect something similarly big on the waterfront to the idea that Councillor Doug Ford floated in 2011. Maybe a Colossus of Rhodes, bestriding the mouth of the Humber? No, let it be a surprise. • Toronto will have a new music festival, and it will be just like the ones Doug Ford saw when he visited Austin, Texas and came back with Lone Stars in his eyes. Ford was pretty clear about this at the debate on the arts Monday. We might even get a new city motto out

of it: ‘Keep Toronto Weird’, anyone? • We will all learn to love Sigma Six – or at least figure out what it is. • The entertaining trench warfare that has come to characterize Toronto City Council meetings will continue, with a small reshuffling that will keep all of us guessing. While Doug Ford’s election is a long-shot, Rob Ford’s election in Ward 2 is nearly a certainty. The brothers Ford will still be manning the turret in the bunker that the mayor’s office has become. Council will still be fed up with them both. It will be fun, in the way that we’ve come to define fun over the past four years. So there you have it. Keep happy, Toronto, sleep well. If the pollsters are as wrong as they sometimes can be... you can always learn to stop worrying and love the Ford.

Performer Joe Cobden is An Enemy of the People Tarragon Theatre’s production of Ibsen play runs until Oct. 26 HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Joe Cobden was just 10 years old when he got paid for his first performance gig. “(It) was juggling torches at Bloor and Brunswick. I made 20 bucks and was changed forever,” Cobden said. Since then Cobden was always drawn to performance art. He was accepted into Concordia University’s theatre performance program after auditioning on a whim and even buskered around England, Germany, France, Holland and Belgium, and performed as a well-dressed British clown. “I thought theatre training

would help my street show, but never thought about being a serious actor,” said the Parkdale resident. Now 35-year-old Cobden is a full-time actor and has racked up awards such as the 2011 the Montreal ACTRA Award for Best Male Actor and has appeared in the films Vow and The Aviator. This fall he’ll be in Tarragon Theatre’s adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s 1882 play An Enemy of the People, where he plays the lead role of Dr. Stockmann who discovers a small Norwegian town’s water is poisonous. However the water is how the town makes its money and would face economic collapse if Stockmann

Joe Cobden stars in An Enemy of the People.

shares his secret, which leaves him with a moral dilemma. “My first impression of the play was that it was modern and German and challenging. I wanted to be in it because of those three things,” he said. According to Cobden, he was drawn to the story

because of that conflict and was drawn to the character because of “his passionate optimism.” “The character believes change is possible. He has a hope I don’t. I wanted to get into that,” Cobden said. He added the role chal-

lenges him as an actor because he has to adapt to the character’s impulses. Since this is a lead role, he said the pressure is on to perform well not only for the other actors on stage, but for the audience, too. Although Cobden has been in both theatre and television productions and they both have their pros and cons, he said he’s partial to theatre because it’s live and it’s a unique, shared experience with complete strangers. “It’s probably my favourite thing to do. The interaction with an audience is pretty thrilling,” he said. “Admittedly, I also like the artistic control in performing in a play. You have much less of that in film.” Through his years of performing Cobden said he’s learned a lot, not only from his university days, but actually being in the theatre business. “I learned that you can make a bit of money if you

practice and work hard,” Cobden said. “I learned that as long as I was exceptional for my age, I’d be fine. That last lesson carried me through until I finished university.” The play runs until Oct. 26 at Tarragon’s Mainspace, 30 Bridgman Ave., and is directed by Richard Rose. According to Cobden, the play has “exciting ideas” that relate to Toronto and its mayor, oil and families and will appeal to a broad audience. “I think people will find this production has some beautiful moments, some complicated and interesting dilemmas,” he said. “It’s a new spin on a classic Ibsen and I truly am trying to be honest and flexible so that no two shows are the same.” An Enemy of the People runs Tuesday to Saturday at 8 p.m. Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Tickets range from $27 to $53.

Two bright blue shipping containers are located north of the playground, the first will be used for preparing and serving food, and the second for storing park equipment and supplies. Inspired by Scadding Court Community Centre’s Market707 shipping container market, Friends of McCormick Park hope the café becomes a permanent fixture replicating the success of the market situated on 707 Dundas St. W. The idea behind Market707 was to re-purpose a structure to help transform a community, which perfectly aligns with Aangen Community Centre’s beliefs about reducing, reusing and recycling as a way of doing business. The café will be serving healthy foods and fresh farm products. “Since it’s a green space, the plan was to put something in the park that was reusable, funky and cool at the same time,” said Gurbeen Bhasin, executive director for the Aangen Community Centre, a supportive non-profit organization. “The park really needed activation

and that was the key initiative,” she said during the Sept. 27 reopening. Prior to the pilot project, the park lacked a range of structures for the kids in the neighbourhood. Now it boasts accessible swings, a big central climber for older children, a new merry-go-round and climbing rocks. “A lot of people who use the park needed somewhere to get something to eat or drink, and there was nothing nearby, so there is a practical aspect to the cafe, but also there is a fun gathering aspect where we wanted people to come be a part of the community,” Cypher said.
