ust unveiled, Roncesvalles Village photographer Joseph Michael Howarth has created for those recently betrothed couples, an interactive map of the most popular wedding venues and formal photo locations within the Greater Toronto Area. The specialized Google map boasts as many as 120 – and growing – most photogenic venues, including parks, bridges and markets from Niagara Falls to the City of Oshawa. “It’s been a long time coming,” confessed Howarth at a Roncesvalles Village coffee shop recently. “Two years ago, I came up with the idea. Each place I shoot, I think, ‘Alright, I’ve got another spot to add to the map.’” Most weekends, especially in summer and fall, Howarth is busy photographing happy couples within a two-hour radius of Toronto. Muskoka, for example, would warrant its own map, he said.

A newlywed himself, Howarth shoots as many as 30 weddings annually. Not only is this map suitable for wedding sites, but also for engagement and family photos, he said, citing his favourite locations, like the Junction, High Park and the Distillery District and a little-known Mississauga spot called Karya Park, a Japanese Tea Garden. “I learn a lot from my clients, but this isn’t just for clients, it’s for everyone,” he said. Howarth says he loves shooting down by the water, whether in Mississauga, Oakville or at the Sunnyside Pavilion. As he says on his website, “If I have learned one thing over my years as a photographer, you can get great shots almost anywhere, but I’ve done my best to comprise a list of some of the more popular places to get married or have wedding or engagement

Mural to grace cement walls of underpass LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com A mural is in the works for one of the now blank cement walls of the underpass at the bottom of Parkside Drive. The mural is spearheaded by the community organization Collective Spaces, whose sole purpose is “creative space-making” in public areas of the city. Earlier this month, the group hosted a community consultation meeting at the High Park Library in Roncesvalles Village to gather input from area residents on what they would like to see depicted on the underpass, where the Queensway passes over Parkside Drive. “We’re really excited about the project,” said Marcus McLean, executive director of Collective Spaces, who added as many as 15 community members shared their ideas and reflections at the Aug.

10 meeting. “We had a very broadbased conversation.” The mural is being made possible by a StreetARToronto grant in collaboration with Artscape, the not-for-profit urban development organization that “makes space for creativity and transforms communities.” One of its many projects is the Artscape Wychwood Barns, a community cultural hub where arts, culture, food security, urban agriculture, environmental and other community activities and initiatives come together in what was a century-old former streetcar repair facility. The overpass, said McLean, serves as an entry way to the neighbourhoods of High Park and Roncesvalles Village and the waterfront and Palais Royale. The criteria for choosing a space, said McLean, includes those that are outside the downtown core, under served creatively and used on a regular basis.

It is surrounded by nature, yet juxtaposed against the hotel on the lakeshore and condos, McLean said. People want to see the mural encompass the natural history of the area and the uses of the community, its waterfront trail and wildlife. “Those are the elements that are going to anchor the mural,” McLean said. The City of Toronto grant requires the mural be completed by October 28, although McLean says he expects the project to be finished Oct. 8. Artist Aaron Li-Hill has been chosen to paint it. Li-Hill has a background in graffiti and mural painting and a degree in Fine Arts. “His work is phenomenal,” McLean said. “He’s a comet on the rise.”

Howarth was inspired to create the map in part because one of the most common questions he is posed by engaged couples is “where” should their photos be taken. Many factors come into play when making this decision, however, location should be top priority. The map also includes links to sample wedding, engagement and family photos Howarth has taken at each location and provides details on each venue, such as permits and price. “One of my favourite shoots was at the CNE at sunset with the sun setting on the rides,” he said. The Etobicoke-raised Howarth was inspired to become a photographer when he spent a year abroad during his third year of university. He had his dad’s old Minolta camera he bought in 1970 as a soldier in Germany. Howarth would go onto photojournalism at Syracuse University. While most of his classmates worked at U.S. newspapers, Howarth returned to Toronto to start his own business. Far from complete, Howarth said he’ll likely be adding venues to the map until he retires.

Police say crime stats are down in Parkdale, Roncesvalles Village ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Across Toronto’s 11 and 14 divisions robberies are down, commercial break and enters are down, and thefts from autos are down. In fact, according to police, the downtown west-end neighbourhoods of Parkdale and Roncesvalles Village aren’t of any particular concern to the police these days. “While we are pleased about the numbers, that doesn’t mean we are any less concerned with crime in this area when it does occur,” said 11 Division Supt. Peter Lennox, who attended the Sept. 25 meeting of the Parkdale Residents Association along with a number of officers from both 11 and 14 divisions. Officers from both divisions police the area with Queen Street West in Parkdale being the border between the two. The divisions split Dufferin

Grove and Little Italy while 11 Division covers off the neighbourhoods of Roncesvalles, High Park and Bloor West, while 14 division is responsible for south Parkdale, Trinity Bellwoods, Niagara and over to the waterfront communities. The crime analyst for 11 division, Const. Robert Tajti presented the “crime and disorder” picture to residents, which reflected the entire divisions, although he said the Parkdale and Roncesvalles Village areas specifically were not hot spots of concern. This year to date, nearly all the categories of crime presented had a marked decline. The exception being residential break and enters, which had increased by about 24 per cent in 11 Division and thefts of vehicles, which was up by about four per cent in 14 Division, although police said these crimes were happening in the more northern parts of their respective divisions.

Smoking rules need to be enforceable, measurable

rudent health measure or nanny state legislation? When Toronto council meets next month, it is scheduled to consider implementing tough new measures on outdoor smoking in the city. These are recommendations proposed by the city’s board of health in an attempt to curb exposure to secondhand smoke. Of the series of recommendations the board made this week, one of them includes asking council to make it illegal to smoke within nine metres of the entrance to all public buildings in the city. The board of health’s recommendation that sports fields and “specific park amenities” go smoke-free as well needs parks and environment committee approval on Oct. 23 before it can go to council. Other health board recommendations, including the banning of smoking on restaurant patios, would require a change to provincial legislation and can’t be imposed by the city. While the board endorsed the our view recommendations, Mayor Rob Ford has called the plan “nanny Smoking ban state” legislation. When it comes to new legislais for greater tion of any sort, we ask: Is the legislation practical? And is it for good the greater good? On the first question, when it comes to banning smoking within nine metres of a public building, we do question the practicality of enforcing such a law and would like to see specific details of how the city plans to deal with that. On the second question, it’s hard to argue that it isn’t for the greater good. In a report to the board of health last September titled ‘The Burden of Illness from Tobacco in Toronto’, Medical Officer of Health Dr. David McKeown noted tobacco use and second-hand smoke remain the leading causes of preventable death in Canada. In Toronto, adult smoking rates have “seen a slowed decline since 2001,” the report said, suggesting expanded tobacco control is needed to further reduce the risks posed from second-hand smoke. The proposals announced this week stem from McKeown’s report. What council must do is ensure the new measures are enforceable and measurable. “The history of trying to reduce the harm caused by smoking in Toronto is one of incremental measures,” McKeown said this week, acknowledging a total ban on smoking is “not a practical objective in the short term.” It’s Toronto council’s job to ensure this next step in the interest of public health is the right one.

Ford bypassing meat of the matter to focus on gravy Mayor Rob Ford was unusually boisterous Monday when he faced reporters alongside a crowd of music industry executives to talk about his trip to Austin, Texas. I suspect it wasn’t just the prospect of visiting the Lone Star State that had him going. The real boost likely came from the matter of the Pan Am Games overexpenditures, and the afterglow of the scandal of the $2,500-a-bum councillors’ chairs. The chairs were ordered by an unnamed staff person; actually replicas of the chairs they were replacing: chairs that had been propping up councillors, mayors and their guests since the early 1960s when Toronto City Hall was built. Last week, Ford apologized for the purchase – coming in at some $75,000 in total – and strongly implied the person responsible for the purchase had been sacked. On Monday, Ford sug-

david nickle the city gested the same thing should happen to Pan Am Games CEO Ian Troop if he can’t adequately explain a heap of questionable expenses filed by himself and his staff as they set about cobbling together the 2015 Games. This is high-fibre feed for Ford, and the movement to re-elect him in 2014. Ford campaigned in 2010 with the simple promise to “stop the gravy train”. To illustrate his point, he held up outgoing Toronto Centre-Rosedale councillor Kyle Rae’s decision to spend $12,000 from his office budget on a farewell party for himself. In the total context of Toronto’s nearing $10-billion budget, $12,000 didn’t amount to much of a hit. But it surely made a difference to Ford’s fortunes in the polls, turning Toronto

council’s perennial outsider into its preeminent insider. That’s a transformation that’s hard to repeat, but it’s the trajectory a Ford re-election campaign will almost certainly follow. Indeed, the mayor is already set up to do so. Council has long ago taken control of the municipal agenda away from Ford, setting its own budgets and carving out its way on transit. Next week, council will probably ignore the mayor’s wishes on the appointment of a caretaker councillor for Ward 3 in Etobicoke. Going into the next election, Ford is firmly on the outside. But just as Rae’s taxpayer-funded party was the key in 2010, so might these new examples of the ugly confluence of privilege and profligacy unlock the door to a second Ford mayoralty. And the fact that neither of these are necessarily the best examples won’t deter him. The decision to purchase

the chairs at such expense may look bad on the surface. But Toronto City Hall is a historically significant building, and the councillors’ lounge behind the chamber is a significant part of that. Similarly, the Pan Am Games is a significant civic and national enterprise, one that will bring benefits to the city’s economy and infrastructure. And if its executives are wellcompensated, and take advantage of their expense accounts according to the rules... well, once again, it’s part of being in the game. But that doesn’t matter in retail politics. Rae’s use of his office budget to throw a farewell bash was all done according to the rules, too. It still riled voters enough to elect Ford mayor of Toronto. And if it worked before, well, why not again?

Shuck, who explained the location within Dufferin Grove was chosen for its flat surface, its distance from Dufferin Street and its proximity to the playground. It could include benches, possibly a pavilion and a footwashing element, but this has yet to be determined. The concrete cement walkway with different sizes of cobblestones will massage different pressure points, explained Shuck. The city is in the midst of soliciting bids from different companies and anticipates a two to three-week selection process. Collaborating with a landscape architect, Shuck says he’ll have his vision translated within a few days. “I hope that by the end of November we’ll have finalized the drawings and then have a company manufacture it in

Focus is on breast cancer awareness ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com The Parkdale Community Health Centre (PCHC) will hit Queen Street West Friday to celebrate Community Health and Wellbeing Week and raise awareness about breast cancer. An accredited community health centre and a member of the Association of Ontario Health Centres, PCHC will host a community walk beginning at 10:45 a.m. at the health centre, heading westbound to Sorauren Avenue and back. The public is welcome to join the walk. Susan Clancy, director of population health and community engagement at the PCHC, explained activities planned for Community Health and Wellbeing Week are a way for the community health sector to draw attention to the variety of programs and services health centres offer in addition to primary care. The PCHC, 1229 Queen W., provides comprehensive,

integrated, primary health care, illness prevention and health promotion, counselling, advocacy, community development and action. During the walk, participants will be engaging people and handing out flyers for the upcoming event One Stop Shop Clinic on Breast Health. On Thursday, Oct. 10, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., the community is invited to come out to PCHC to learn more about breast health and screening, community supports and holistic health care for breast health. PCHC chose to make breast cancer and breast health the focus of their activities for Community Health and Wellness week this year after PCHC had a consultant do a demographic study this past summer, which showed Parkdale has a relatively high rate of incidence of a disease, in particular related to cancer. “We thought we would start with breast cancer because there has been a lot of media

lately about how breast cancer is being detected in younger women,” Clancy said, adding that made breast centre health a timely topic for the PCHC to approach. Among the population the PCHC services, largely from South Parkdale, the report also revealed issues with youth being under-served as well as high rates of addictions issues. “We were looking to have a whole environmental scan to have an understanding about how our agency needed to position itself in terms of looking at key community health issues,” Clancy said. The report was meant to aid the PCHC to be the most responsive to needs as they can and in light of the findings Clancy said there will be future programs on smoking cessation and alcohol, but they decided to first focus on breast cancer to draw attention of the public.

Much to dog owner Diana Meredith’s dismay, she came upon work crews in the offleash area of High Park cutting down trees last week near the allotment gardens. “Why are they coming down,” Meredith wondered. According to City of Toronto signs, she learned some trees were being removed to make room for a new path near the allotment gardens. However, to her, Meredith said the trees looked healthy. “My understanding is, they were going to get rid of the lower path to have more room for quote ‘nature.’ But, they’ve gone right through the middle of the forest,” she said referring to the construction crew. “This morning, (Tuesday, Sept. 24), there were people out with chainsaws. It looks like they’re clear-cutting – what is the point?” The Lansdowne Avenue and Bloor Street West-area resident and her husband are regulars in High Park. One of them is in the park every day to walk their six-yearold pet. David Nosella, supervisor of capital projects with the city, explained the situation, saying crews are working to close off an existing trail and create a new one in its place. “The purpose is to preserve some more important trees

along the trail and get rid of some junk species,” Nosella told The Villager. The work is part of the second phase of a project in the off-leash area of High Park. The work was originally scheduled for completion this month, however, staff had to redesign a portion of the steps so the work will take a little bit longer. The off-leash improvement project includes the creation of a new off-leash trail around the allotment gardens and will include the installation of a new metal staircase on the ravine embankment. The construction has occurred in stages. In order to allow construction equipment to operate without compromising public safety, sections of the trail system have had to be closed during construction.

Park Off-leash cleanup saturday wHigh The High Park off-leash area fall cleanup is scheduled for Saturday starting at 10 a.m. on Dog Hill. Two cleanups are required each year – one in autumn before the leaves fall and one in winter after the snow melts – to maintain High Park’s offleash status. Participants are asked to bring bags, gloves, scoops and wear long sleeves and pants because they’ll be required to go into brush to pick up garbage and dog feces. Plan for about two hours of cleaning in different areas of the off-leash area, including trails and Spring Road. Garbage bags and latex gloves will be provided.

The TTC has cancelled another planned downtown subway shutdown for October. T h re e c l o s u re s we re planned this month along the “U” portion of the YongeUniversity routes, but last week the TTC announced it no longer needed to shut down the stations between Bloor and St. George stations from Oct. 19 to 20 That means only one service freeze is currently planned, during Thanksgiving weekend.

The TTC’s board of directors endorsed a proposal to build a three-stop subway extension into Scarborough. The 6-4 decision taken at Wednesday’s board meeting now pushes ahead the TTC’s proposal for an extension of the Bloor-Danforth line, to travel east from Kennedy Station to Sheppard Avenue East. King streetcar over capacity >>>from page 1 Station and board the GO Train, which takes 11 minutes to get to Union Station, one could be there in just more than 20 minutes, Layton said. “If you go up to King Street to catch the streetcar, I estimate you will watch four streetcars go by full and then you sit in traffic for at least a half hour,” Layton said. “So you spend an hour to get to the subway as compared to 22 minutes if you take the train.” Layton is in the process of penning a letter to the TTC asking staff to look at making GO to Union Station a more seamless trip and to investigate it as a possibility moving forward. “It is going to help the city out,” Layton said. “The King streetcar is running over capacity by about 10 people (per car) and if we could get 10 or 20 people off that would be very helpful.”

Metrolinx recently doubled its capacity on GO’s Lakeshore West line. The line now runs virtually every half hour from 6 a.m. until midnight. As well, additional rush hour express trains which currently bypass the Exhibition stop “will start stopping there as of next year when they expand the platform,” Layton said. Layton said not a lot of people use the GO option because if you need to take the subway, you have to pay both the GO fee and the TTC fare for a total of $8. “My argument is you are running the trains any how, they are stopping any how, let some people get on there at a reduced rate,” Layton said. “It is one stop that is already built.” Potentially, Layton said there could be an integrated fee between GO from Exhibition Station and the TTC of about $3.

Happiness Doesn’t Come From Headstands, says author ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Tamara Levitt said she knows failure intimately and in her new children’s book she is imparting a few lessons she learned in her life. From a young age, Levitt, who lives in Roncesvalles Village, had dreams of fame and fortune. She was a singer, dancer and an actor, but said those endeavors didn’t work out. She then turned her efforts to developing a children’s television series, which also never fully came to fruition. But Levitt reflected on her failures and experiences, picked herself up and now has written a children’s book that aims to teach children the lessons she learned of acceptance, forgiveness and self-compassion. Happiness Doesn’t Come From Headstands is a children’s book about a girl named Leela who has a dream of doing a headstand. She tries and tries, but she is unable to achieve her goal. “She comes to the belief that if she is unable to achieve her goal, she will be unable to achieve happiness,” Levitt said. “Ultimately,

“I think we’re setting kids up with the expectation that we should always be able to succeed,” Levitt said. “But self-worth shouldn’t be equated with achievement.” Happiness Doesn’t Come From Headstands was released at a party on Sept. 25 at the Gladstone Hotel, alongside a short animated film by Levitt titled Ode to Failure. The nine-minute film shares Levitt’s story of failure and how she came back from it. The film and the book encourage people to tune out past failure and focus on finding a way to do what you love. “The book and the video came to me because I grew up in a world where I became a perfectionist,” she said. “There is so little room for forgiveness in that.” The film and book fall under Levitt’s larger initiative, Begin Within Productions. Levitt began Begin Within Productions with the aim of creating multi-media content, which she said hopes will foster self-awareness, emotional intelligence and interpersonal development. “We are all seeking happiness in life, but I think most of us have lost

Mammoliti to replace Holyday Toronto Council to decide on on Ford’s executive committee tough outdoor smoking ban DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com

Executive Committee, where he’ll replace former Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday, now a Progressive Conservative MPP in Etobicoke-Lakeshore. “No (hard feelings) at all,” said Ford. The striking committee was dealing with a number of vacancies on city committees and boards – some but not all created by Holyday’s departure. Don Valley West Councillor John Parker resigned from the Budget Committee so he could take Holyday’s spot on the Audit Committee. Six councillors were selected to sit on a task force dealing with school board issues – but not St. Paul Councillor Josh Matlow, who had worked to establish the task force in the first place. Matlow told reporters “the transit debate just got more interesting,” but would not say whether he was referring to his own comments critical of Mayor Ford’s subway plans

On Monday afternoon, Toronto’s Striking Committee recommended that Giorgio Mammoliti be re-admitted to Mayor Rob Ford’s Executive Committee. Mammoliti spent much of the past term as one of Mayor Rob Ford’s more vocal and controversial supporters. But Mammoliti quit Ford’s Executive Committee immediately after Ford was briefly convicted of violating the Ontario Conflict of Interest Act last year. Earlier this year, Mammoliti’s fortunes shifted for the worse, as he underwent brain surgery and faced prosecution for campaign spending irregularities in the 2010 election. According to Mayor Rob Ford’s brother Doug, who sits on the striking committee, all is forgiven – and Mammoliti is welcome back on the

What the mayor’s job is to make everyone happy,” said Ford. “Because it doesn’t work if they’re not. You can’t force anyone to sit on a committee.” One councillor who won’t sit on a committee is former budget chief, ScarboroughAgincourt Councillor Mike Del Grande. Although councillors are required to serve on at least one committee by legislation, Del Grande did not offer any choices. Committee chair Norm Kelly moved to put Del Grande on the city’s Licensing and Standards Committee anyway, but the committee voted it down.

DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com Toronto Council will be considering banning outdoor smoking within nine metres of all public building entrances and possibly in certain parts of public parks in November, after Toronto’s Board of Health recommended tougher new restrictions designed to curb second-hand smoke. The board made the recommendations Monday after hearing from 18 deputations and a report from Dr. David McKeown, Toronto’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, suggesting a range of restrictions – some of which the city can impose itself, others which require provincial legislation and regulation. Immediately, the board is asking council to make it illegal to smoke within nine metres of the entrance to all public buildings — which would include civic buildings,

private office buildings and even apartment and condominium buildings. As well, the board endorsed a plan – which must also be endorsed by the city’s Parks and Environment Committee – to ban smoking at public beaches, near sporting fields and in high-traffic parks areas such as shelters and picnic areas. And it asked the province to ban smoking on restaurant patios too. Mayor Rob Ford, hearing of the vote, called it “nanny state” legislation and said he wouldn’t support it. “I’m not a smoker, I don’t like it, but I don’t like governments getting involved in this. How far are they going to push it? Make the whole city smoke free?” Dr. McKeown said a total ban on smoking wasn’t likely in the cards for Toronto. “I don’t think that’s a practical objective in the short

term,” he said. “The history of trying to reduce the harm caused by smoking in Toronto is one of incremental measures. We do still have 16 per cent of people in Toronto who do smoke so we have to recognize that.” Board of Health Chair Joe Mihevc rejected the idea this was an example of “nanny state” intervention. “I think a better way to put it is to say that smoking when it impacts others is becoming less and less viable,” he said. “Smoking as a social enterprise impacts others: my right to smoke ends at your nose.” Dr. McKeown said the measures were appropriate from a public finance standpoint as well. “The government pays the cost that comes from this so when people who are ill with heart disease and cancer go to the hospital we pay the cost for that,” said Dr. McKeown.
