Liberal Party wins in close ParkdaleHigh Park election race

HiLARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com The time for change has come to Parkdale High-Park as the red wave washed over the riding. It was a close race, but constituents chose Liberal Party candidate Arif Virani as its new Member of Parliament. “I’ve always known I wanted to do this and now I’m about to do this and it’s a bit scary, but it’s exciting,” Virani told The Villager as supporters cheered and patted him on the back. “This win, it’s surreal, it’s humbling and it’s flattering.” It was a close race with just 1,123 deciding the riding’s winner. He beat out incumbent Peggy Nash 42 per cent (24,678) to 40 per cent (23,555). Nash has served as MP since 2011 (she also served from 2006 to 2008). In the past, the Parkdale-High Park riding has often fluctuated between Liberal and NDP. In 2008, the MP was Liberal Party’s Gerard Kennedy, who was ousted by Nash. Prior to 2008, the riding chose a Liberal MP in almost every election since 1979. One exception was in 1984 when Progressive Conservative candidate Andrew Witer won. >>>NDP’S, page 3

NDP’s Nash says Canadians wanted to see change >>>from page 1 At Virani’s campaign victory party at the Jekyl and Hyde Pub, 2340 Dundas St. W., the room was filled with supporters cheering for every Liberal who won across the GTA as well as Virani. Red Liberal balloons adorned the room, as well as red and white streamers. In the back, a man-made platform was built with Arif Virani campaign signs turned into pillars on either side. As Virani walked in with his wife and two young sons, the Black Eyed Peas song “I’ve Got A Feeling,” blared from the speakers to pump up the crowd, and a large Canadian flag could be seen swaying above the heads of the audience. When Virani rose to the podium, the crowd was chanting his name and Virani smiled. “As exciting as things are here at Parkdale High-Park,
they are exciting around the GTA and the country,” Virani said to the crowd. “It’s incredible to think that the keys at 24 Sussex will be changing hands.” During his speech, which focused mainly on the Liberal Party’s success as a whole rather than his own, Virani noted his respect for Nash. “I’ve got a lot to learn from Peggy Nash. Anyone who can serve and serve nobly in a riding and serve in the House of Commons for six out of the last nine years deserves our respect and our gratitude,” Virani said to an eruption of applause. “You don’t serve a riding for six years and not have something to offer. People had an appetite for change,” Virani added. “This was never about me versus Peggy. It’s about the community.” Nash told The Villager the loss didn’t come as a shock
to her. “I knew it was going to be tight. I thought that the Liberals and Arif Virani ran a very good campaign. They worked very hard,” she said. “I knew they were running to win, and they needed everything to go right and it went right for them.” Nash added the loss spoke to how badly Canadians wanted change in this country’s leadership. “They wanted to see the end of the (Prime Minister) Stephen Harper government as did I and so I think Canadians were successful in that. But, sadly, we also got swept up in the wave for change,” she said. “It’s too bad. Not only did we lose here in ParkdaleHigh Park, we lost a lot of seats across the country. But you know, there was a huge wave for change and I think Canadians got what they wanted…I certainly
wish my successor well. I think he’s got a very, very exciting opportunity in this new government. I wish him well.” By the end of his speech Virani not only thanked his family for being “his rock throughout the campaign”, he also thanked his supporters for believing in him and a believing in a better Canada. “ Yo u d o n’t g e t h e r e alone,” he said. “You guys all believe in something; you believe in a better country, you believe in a better leader, you believe in a better party, you believe in a better riding and perhaps you believe in a better candidate. Thank you for believing in me.” The Parkdale-High Park riding is on Toronto’s western waterfront. It’s bordered by the Humber River to the west, Dufferin Street to the east and the CP rail line to the north.

Parkdale group pushes for closure of Muzik nightclub Muzik responds in email that it’s absolutely willing to work with neighbourhood association HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com The South Parkdale Ne i g h b o u r h o o d Gro u p has had enough of Muzik nightclub. Residents said they are tired of the drunken and disorderly patrons that migrate towards Dufferin Street damaging property and would like to see the nightclub closed. “It’s been a long standi n g i s s u e,” s a i d L o r n a Tomassoni, the resident spearheading the nightclub’s closure with the neighbourhood group. “People here have been complaining forever because of the violence, the drunkenness that results in the violation of property and the loud music into the night and nobody listens.” Residents said they have had to replace garage doors due to vandalism, have witnessed public urination on their property and filed
noise complaints with the city regarding Muzik and its patrons. In an email to The Villager, Muzik’s communications department disgree with the group’s accusations of disorderly patrons, stating “a large majority of Muzik patrons take limousine and taxi to and from our venue. This past summer Muzik hired a third party security company to monitor and determine if any patron disturbances occurred at Dufferin and Springhurst, which is the nearest residential area to Muzik. They reported no occurrences coming from Muzik.” Muzik also questioned the residents’ noise complaints. “Pr o f e s s i o n a l s o u n d checks around the area are regularly done by our in-house technician who is a union member of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees
in order to measure the impact of our operations,” the email read. “These consistently report no noise from Muzik but noise emanating from the Gardiner Expressway and occasional trains. “It’s also important to note we normally operate one night a week and are a small operation compared to the numerous tenants and events at Exhibition Place and Ontario Place that produce noise.” The response went on to say there are other licensed bars in the area near Dufferin and Liberty Streets that “have substantially more impact to the neighbourhood.” The neighbourhood group is currently pushing two petitions to shut down Muzik, requesting the City of Toronto cancel Muzik’s lease, have the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) revoke its liquor license, restore safety
“

to the grounds and promote the architecture and landscape of the horticultural building. The first petition was circulated door-to-door in the neighbourhood by Tomassoni and has about 90 signatures. The second is an online petition through Change. Org that has 248 signatures to date. The local councillors are also pushing for something to be done about the nightclub. Both Parkdale-High Park Councillor Gord Perks and Trinity-Spadina Councillor Mike Layton have joined
together to pen a letter to city council to hold off on extending Muzik’s lease and to the AGCO to review, suspend or revoke the club’s liquor licence. In the latter letter, it states the AGCO has levied approximately $6,000 in fines to Muzik from 2012 to 2015. A recent shooting at the club and near the Dufferin Gates in August took the lives of 23-year-old Duvel Hibbert of Brampton and 26-year-old Ariela NavarroFenoy of Toronto, after an OVO Fest after party, and injured three others. The group will be taking their petition to the next
Exhibition Place board of governors meeting on Oct. 23. “What we’re trying to impress on the board of governors is that we’re concerned about security as a result of Muzik,” Tomassoni told The Villager. “We’re concerned about the fact that the horticultural building and the park around it isn’t respected and we’re concerned that it’s in the family area of Exhibition Place,” she explained. “It counters what that area is intended to be. It’s more of a family environment and then you stick in this bar there, it’s totally not family friendly.” Muzik’s communication department said it’s “absolutely” willing to work with the neighbourhood association. “Muzik has in the past and will continue in the future to ensure harmony with the neighbourhood,” stated the email response.

t appears voters believe Justin Trudeau is, in fact, ready to become the Prime Minister of Canada as the red tide of Liberal support swept the country and all of Toronto Monday night. With a majority government, the federal Liberals now have a strong mandate to implement their policies and the priorities they outlined during the 78-day national election campaign. It’s time now for Toronto residents, who voted in the Liberals in all 25 local ridings, to make sure the election promises and commitments to invest in our city are kept by the Prime Minister Designate and the newly elected MPs. Start by getting to know your local Liberal MP, many of whom are first-time poliour view ticians. As it is a majority government, they will be your voice in for the next four years. City’s priority Ottawa And while majority governissues must ments are more stable, it becomes even more important to hold the be addressed party in power accountable to run an agenda that is in the best interest of those who elected them into power. The next four years with a co-operative federal government that is friendly to major cities can go a long way in building community at a very local level. Just as Mayor John Tory outlined in his congratulatory speech, Trudeau’s commitment to cities includes investments in building transit, affordable housing, repairing social housing and other major infrastructure needs. These are all top priority issues for Toronto, which can’t be addressed by just one level of government. In a city as large and complex as ours, the federal government must be a major player in helping provide a solution to these ongoing issues. Since we also have a majority Liberal government in Ontario, we are hoping they can work very well together to the benefit of Toronto and other big cities in the province. Even if you didn’t cast a ballot for the Liberals, the incoming MPs are elected to represent all constituents in their riding. Keep them accountable to the “positive politics” that Trudeau seemed to champion throughout the campaign. Tory said he is looking forward to working with Trudeau on Toronto’s issues. So should we.

Reader hopes series on dementia paves the way for a cultural shift in our concept of the disease Re: ‘Senior + Dementia Series,’ Sept. 24. Please allow me to commend your publication for exploring in-depth the reality of dementia. As your contributors note, awareness must be central to the fundamental cultural change required on the part of all Canadians. With publication of your series, you contribute immensely to the education, which must be a first step to effecting change. Yet, confronting the challenge of dementia requires more than education, information and awareness. Action is vital. Individuals with dementia rely on the emotional and material support of family members who, themselves, may be frail, insufficiently prepared or simply unaware of available health-care resources. Of those who do try to access needed services,
the bureaucratic demands can prove frustrating and draining. Civic society bears the responsibility of facilitating the well-being of entire communities by accommodating the practical needs of those directly impacted by dementia. As a society, we in Canada are blessed with myriad resources to mitigate the effect of dementia on communities. It is in exercising these variables that we can confront the devastation of the condition. Stakeholders such as Dr. Atiya Mahmood is employing her tenure at the Simon Fraser University to explore architecture as a ‘hard’ feature of the environment, which can influence the quality of life of those confronting dementia, and of their caregivers. Dean Trevor Young helms the executive of the Toronto Dementia Research
Alliance, advising on processes for incorporating study of dementia as an organic condition with the holistic demands placed on communities. Until we each find ourselves directly confronted by dementia, it would be easy to ignore the milieu of grief, loss, frustration, which accompanies our loved ones’ decline, but that is not the Canadian way. Our way is to admit the gravity of a situation, and to undertake pursuit of solutions. For the sake of our communities, and of our society, my hope is that your series marks the start of a cultural shift in our concept of dementia. The condition is not a far-off threat. The reality of its social cost, and emotional and financial weight is here, now. Caril Phang MA, Member, College of Nurses of Ontario

Susan Ditchburn, a resident on Dovercourt Road for 18 years. “But the city has a healthy neighbourhood policy and to me this is not healthy.” Ditchburn lives in a townhouse right next to where the six-storey building is proposed to be. Her concern is the height of the building and the lack of sunlight she’ll have once it’s built. “It’s going to be a brick wall even near my porch. My entire backyard will have a brick wall beside it too,” she said. “For me it means I’m not going to get any sunshine.” The site is currently zoned as industrial, however the developer Dales Consulting is looking to have the zoning bylaw amended to residential. The proposed building is surrounded by neighbourhood designation that has single detached, semi-detached and row houses to the north; to the east is the Centre of Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH); to the south is a two-storey industrial building soon to be a 10-storey mixed-use building and townhouses that range from one to two storeys; and to the west is an 11-storey building. Dales Consulting is proposing the construction of an 18-metre high building with three-metres for the mechanical penthouse, for a total of 21-metres. It will provide 24 resident parking spaces via a parking lift at the rear of

the building, 19 bike parking spaces and 323 square-feet of indoor amenity space in the basement. However, it will have no visitor parking spots and no outdoor amenity space. The building will have 25 units: six one-bedroom units, 17 two-bedroom units and two three-bedroom units. Each unit will be two-storeys and range from 600 to 1,100 square feet. The top floor units will have access to a rooftop terrace. The price points for the units start at $499,000 and cap off at $1.1 million. A resident in attendance who lives on Dovercourt Road welcomed the development mainly because of the hefty amount of two-bedroom units in this development, which he said is hard to come by in the city and in this neighbourhood. “It’s nice to have a developer build two- and threebedroom units. They’re considered family units, which is good,” said Jeremiah Shamess. “At the end of the day people my age – I’m 32 – want
to start a family, maybe have one, two kids. But we don’t want to move to the suburbs, we like the cultural aspect of the city.” Shamess fears the bidding wars in the neighbourhood and sky-high housing prices in the area will prevent him from affording a home. But despite the opportunity for young families to get in on the ground floor of a competitive housing market, city planner Aviva Pelt said the city does have some concerns with the proposal. Some include the overall height and density of the building, the lack of outdoor amenity space despite the inclusion of balconies, the noise concerns regarding the parking lift and the appropriate transitions to the neighbourhood to the north and the institutional area (CAMH) to the east. The city also has to take into consideration the approved development of a 10-storey residential building just south of this development at 41 Dovercourt Rd. Residents also voiced concern about how the development will increase traffic volumes in the area, and the speed at which they’re travelling and whether or not it will fit in the surrounding neighbourhood aesthetically. A final report will be given to community council in 2016. Until then, the city is working with the developer to address the issues raised by the city and the community.

Bombardier fails to deliver new low floor streetcar fleet on schedule RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com Bombardier will not be able to meet a revised schedule for delivery of the TTC’s new low floor streetcar fleet. The company has informed TTC staff it can only guarantee completion of 16 of the new vehicles by the end of 2015, seven short of what it promised in a revised delivery schedule agreed to earlier this year. “I am incredibly disappointed to learn Bombardier, yet again, will not be meeting their commitments to deliver new streetcars to Toronto,” said TTC Chair Josh Colle in a statement. “They have let down the TTC, our customers, the good workers in Thunder Bay and all Toronto residents. We will not let Bombardier’s incompetence hold our patient and loyal customers

Martindale Dental grand opening a success Martindale Dental wants to thank everyone who attended their Family Fun Grand Opening and made the event a success. On October 17, community members visited the new office and enjoyed face painting, arts and crafts, loot bags and a special visit from mascots Mart and Dale. Though this is a brand new care centre, Martindale Dental also has five well established locations serving communities across southern Ontario. All of the offices provide general dental care and have specialists available for patients with specific needs. Orthodontists are available for braces, oral surgeons are available to remove wisdom teeth and pedodontists (children’s specialists) are available to make sure your little ones are as comfortable as possible while receiving care. Patients are also welcome to come in for extractions, fillings, ve-

pursuing a $50 million legal action against the company for late delivery. It is also recommending seeking further damages to cover maintenance costs for the existing streetcar fleet, which must continue to operate in the absence of the new vehicles, and for
running supplementary bus service plus unspecified operating and customer impact costs. In June, TTC staff expressed serious doubts Bombardier could adhere to a revised schedule for delivering the new streetcars as part of a $1.2 billion agreement originally made in 2009 to replace the existing fleet, which includes vehicles dating back to the 1970s. Under the terms of the original agreement, Bombardier was supposed to have had 67 of 204 new streetcars in service by now. There are currently 10. The delays – which Bombardier has blamed on production and labour issues – prompted Colle and TTC CEO Andy Byford to arrange a visit in
neers, reconstructive surgery and gum surgery. Extended office hours are available to accommodate patients’ busy schedules. The Martindale team works to make sure patients are comfortable. One helpful option offered is sedation dentistry. Nervous patients are able to discuss and choose methods of sedation to safely and effectively perform the necessary treatments without the discomfort of anxiety. There are also multiple financial and scheduling options to help all patients receive the individualized care they need. New patients are always welcome at Martindale. The newest office is located at 766 King St. W. This is two blocks west of Bathurst at the corner of Tecumseth and King St., across from Shoppers Drug Mart. For more information, visit http://martindaledental.com or call the King St. office at (855) 782-3872.

Second master plan meeting set for Dec. 16 >>>from page 1 That’s why the Friends of High Park Zoo (FHPZ), a community and volunteer driven organization, has launched an initiative, the High Park Zoo Master Plan, alongside the city’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation department, to enhance and sustain the zoo.
“We want to come up with a vision for what the zoo can be,” landscape architect Brent Raymond of the firm DTAH, told an audience who had gathered at a public meeting at the High Park Forest School last Thursday evening. “Whatever you think is a good idea, bring it forward. We’re not here
to make a decision tonight. We want to talk about the possibilities.” A Master Plan is a tool to help implement a vision and used as a fundraising tool, Raymond explained to the couple dozen community members, who attended the meeting hosted by FHPZ. The Master Plan will be

defined within a relatively short period of three months because it will coincide with the reconstruction of Deer Pen Road – the public access to the zoo pens. It is in need of repair; there are storm water drain issues and tree roots breaking through the sidewalk, Raymond said. “Deer Pen Road is not a vehicular road, it’s a service road,” he said. “Does it need to be as wide? What can we do to do more here? How can we create pathways, make the zoo more park-like? How can we deal with the storm water?” Working with Raymond and DTAH is Paul Harpley, who specializes in zoo exhibit planning, design and interpretation. “Are there new materials that can be used, new approaches that can be taken? What’s unique and original about High Park Zoo?” he asked. Residents were tasked

with answering three specific questions among themselves: What place or feature do you like most about the zoo; what place or feature would you like to see improved at the zoo; and what additional feature would you like to see in the zoo’s Master Plan? Better signage was a suggestion that came up several times. Parkdale-High Park Councillor Sarah Doucette, who spoke on behalf of her working group, suggested animal footprints be painted on paths to indicate where the zoo is within High Park. Improved fencing that would allow visitors to get even closer to the animals,
a petting area not just on weekends and more interactive features were just a few more suggestions. In January of 2012, the zoo, which had been built in 1893, was threatened with closure when the city proposed pulling its $228,000 annual operating costs. That’s when the FHPZ formed to save the zoo. The group opened the llama pen to visitors who for a small fee could feed them, and raised $11,000 in one week. Thanks to groups like The Honey Family Foundation, the Gr iggs Family Foundation, and individual donors, the zoo was saved and on-going fundraising efforts are continuing to fund its sustainability and enhancements. A second Master Plan meeting is set for Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 6:30 p.m., at the Forest School. To find out more, visit www.cms.highparkzoo.ca

Do you really need a mammogram? Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer found in Canadian women, and understanding your personal risk factors can help to avoid becoming a part of this demographic. Getting screened for abnormalities is an easy first preventative step you can take. Here is a quick-guide to breast health:
Understand your personal risk Risk factors of breast cancer can include your gender, age, breast density and genetics. Women have a higher chance of getting breast cancer than men, as do women over the age of 60. Family history that includes ovarian and breast cancer in female relatives can also raise the risk, along with having a particular genetic disposition. Women with dense breasts have also been shown to have an increased risk. Understanding your personal risks and how your lifestyle impacts these risks can help you in the long run.
appointment, you will undergo a mammogram procedure where the breast is compressed under two plates in order to create a clear image of breast tissue. It is recommended to get a mammogram every one to two years starting at age 40.
Preventative measures Practicing self-screening can also help with early diagnosis. It is recommended that women take a moment each month to self-screen. Women should begin this exam in their early twenties and look for abnormalities such as lumps, bumps, redness, changes in nipple size and abnormal excretions. If anything abnormal is detected during the self exam, an appointment should be made with a doctor.

Jane, 43, is a beautiful, sweet girl who is a nurse and looking for the right man. Jane has never been married and has no children. She loves football, hockey, going to concerts, and being outdoors. She is very down to earth, and easy to get along with. Jane does not drink or smoke. She is not one to go to bars, and she has had a hard time meeting the right person in her small community. She is always up to try new things and open to new experiences. Jane is a bit shy at first, and she is nervous about dating, but really wants to meet the right person to settle down with. She is very open and accepting of people, she’s very non-judgmental, and cares more about who someone is on the inside rather than on the outside. She is looking for a good man who is energetic, fun, adventurous, has a good sense of humor, down-to-earth, and a little bit romantic.
