Sorauren Park pumpkin sale supports WBS ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com For years, Sorauren Park has had a pumpkin tradition that brings the gourds full circle while raising money and building community. For the past six years Chander Chaddah, a broker at Sutton Group Associates, and Joanna Lang, a residential mortgage manager at Scotiabank, have hosted the Sorauren Pumpkin Sale in support of the Wabash Building Society (WBS). Chaddah and Lang donate a couple hundred pumpkins, which are sold to the commu-
nity for as much money as they are willing to give in support of the work of the WBS. “We get four or five bins of pumpkins and we take them out of the bins and create kind of a pumpkin patch,” Chaddah said. “It’s fun, kids roam through and sit on the pumpkins or little kids try to pick up giant pumpkins.” In addition to the pumpkins and play there is face painting for kids, muffins and warm cider. “It’s just a nice community day and a nice way to get people to the fieldhouse and create >>>PUMPKIN, page 5

Roncesvalles Village resident has got Game (of Things) LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Tom Quinn, his brother Ted and childhood friend Mark Sherry never set out to invent a game that would go on to sell as many as 1.5 million copies in North America. The three simply wanted to make each other laugh. “We’ve always had this funny bent to our lives,” said the Roncesvalles Village resident. Quinn and his brother were known for creating comedic versions of existing board games and sports. And so, while on one of their many visits back home to North Bay where Sherry still lives, the trio came up with what is
now known as The Game of Things. Yet back then, it was referred to as just ‘The Game’ and became more popular than any other traditional board game among family and friends. “I just thought it was a really fun pastime. We’d be rolling on the ground laughing and waking up the next day with a sore belly. It took on a life of its own for five years,” Quinn told The Villager. It was Sherry, the entrepreneur, who operated several businesses in North Bay, who first suggested pitching their idea to a distributor. “He said, ‘If you don’t go and do this, I’ll do it without you,’” said Quinn with a laugh.

The three decided to rent a booth at the Canadian Toy Fair where they set up a living room with a wooden box that mirrored the game

as a backdrop. “We were smart, savvy, middle-aged guys, but we didn’t understand the business at the time,” said Quinn. As many as 17 distributors were interested at the end of the fair. Once their game was sold at independent toy stores across Canada, the three guys sold 50,000 games in three and a half years. “In Canada, that’s huge,” said Quinn. A decade later, Quinn has been nominated for a Toy and Game Inventor Award (TAGIE) by the Chicago Toy & Game Group. Winners will be announced at the TAGIE Awards dinner and ceremony, Friday, Nov. 22.

“It means a lot because it’s a personal thing for us. We weren’t game inventors,” said Quinn. “I’ve been at this for 10 years off and on. It’s a justification.” The Game of Things presents players with “provocative” subjects, such as “Things... people do when no one is looking” or “Things... you wouldn’t do for a million dollars” or “Things... your parents forgot to tell you.” With very few rules, players simply pick a topic, everyone writes a response and then they’re read out loud and players guess who said what. “We thought it was an adult game. My kids and nephews and nieces didn’t pay any
attention to it until it got in a box,” said Quinn. “One New Year’s Eve, the kids, between the ages of six and 16, were in the basement. I explained the rules and I let them pick a topic: Things you shouldn’t do when you’re naked. My 10-year old nephew came up with ‘Fry bacon.’ If you can read and write, you can play.” When Quinn is not inventing games, he can be found behind the lens as a film director. He has worked on such movies as ‘Kick-Ass’, ‘Amelia’, ‘Chicago’ and ‘Crash’, among others.

eadership is an important skill to acquire in life. However, many people, in particular youngsters in at-risk neighbourhoods do not have as many opportunities to gain those important skills. Thankfully the charitable organization Kids Now has taken up the challenge, offering an afterschool program where youth in grades 7 and 8 can empower themselves and gain confidence. Youth volunteer for the 12-week program and are paired with mentors who help drive home the importance of self-esteem, setting goals, communication, conflict resolution, and stress management. All skills are rooted in making the right choices in our view life, staying in school, and taking part in extra-curricuAfter-school lar activities and volunteerin the community. initiative benefits ingThe last point, though no entire community more special than the others, is one that speaks to how a strong community is created – by everyone being an active part of that community, which helps make that community a better place to live, work, and enjoy life. Kids Now mentors come from all walks of life including corporate employees, university students, and even former Kids Now participants. Kids Now is a chance for corporations, companies, Torontonians and even politicians to become mentors to youth. This is something that would not only help the lives of youth, but create a community, a city where people believe in themselves, which leads to believing in their city and the neighbourhoods they call home. The Kids Now program flourished in several schools in Toronto, in particular St. Luigi Catholic School where students raised funds for Meagan’s Walk, as well as supported a village in Kenya and ran a food and clothing drive to help the less fortunate. It is obvious that by giving youth the right skills – leadership being just one – they will take up a challenge and become better citizens. It is now time for mentors of various stripes to help mould even more youth to become all they can be.

Committee move could vault bike lanes into election issue Just in time for the 2014 municipal election, it looks like Toronto council is going to be talking big bike lanes again. This week, Toronto’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee voted to re-start the environmental assessment of bike lanes along Bloor Street – a route that is both a practical goal and symbolic grail for Toronto cycling advocates. It should also send a shiver up the spine of any regular downtown bicycle commuter. Just about four years ago, cycling advocates convinced the council at the time to put bike lanes on Jarvis Street, and nearly got a separated bike lane pilot project on University Avenue, too. The Jarvis bike lane was good for cyclists, but better for politicians willing to stir up anger over what they characterized as those cyclists’ sinister and overweening ambitions.
david nickle the city There wasn’t much consensus in the 2010 mayoralty race, but nearly everyone agreed that there was a war on, that war was against “the car,” and Jarvis Street was its battleground. And so it was that the new council voted to pull the lanes out and widen the road again, against the wishes of the local councillor and community. As an afterthought a year later, council ordered the city to stop studying that other big bike lane project along Bloor Street. And now, it is on the verge of starting up again, and from a transportation planning point of view, it makes a great deal of sense. The city is studying a bikeway along Dupont just to the north of Bloor. What happens there affects what happens on Bloor and vice versa.
“
A Bloor Street bike lane’s a good idea – just as it would be to extend the bike lanes back east along the Danforth.
And it’s not for nothing that Bloor is such a grail for bike nuts. Don’t despair All the public transit along Bloor is below ground, which means cyclists need contend neither with buses nor streetcar tracks, and it crosses many pedestrian – and bike-friendly communities already. It sounds perfect. But going into an election next year, it’s just as perfect an example for nay-saying politicians to hold up as the latest example of a permanent war against automobiles and their drivers.
It’s hard to see how pushing along with even an environmental assessment now will result in anything but a push-back from what has previously shown itself to be a powerful anti-bike sentiment in a large part of the electorate. This is not to say that bike commuters should despair and the city should shelve what is a good plan. A Bloor Street bike lane’s a good idea – just as it would be to extend the bike lanes back east along the Danforth. It would make the city safer, greener, and maybe even a bit more physically fit on average as commuters from Etobicoke to Scarborough and in between saw a better option in biking. But wouldn’t it be nice if it didn’t also fuel the kind of divisive and disingenuous politicking that burned so bright in 2010?

Pumpkin sale aiming for $3000 >>>from page 1 community spirit day,” Chaddah said. The goal with this year’s pumpkins is to raise $3,000 for a total of $15,000 raised during the past six years. Every penny raised has been donated to support park improvements, Chaddah explained. This year specifically, the money is earmarked for the Sorauren Park Town Square fund. “For people it isn’t seen as a chance to get a cheap pumpkin, but it is an opportunity to contribute to the community and it makes them feel good,” Chaddah said. “People are very generous and usually give us 10 or 20 bucks for a pumpkin.” The Wabash Building Society has been chipping away, piece by piece to transform Sorauren Park for the past number of years. They started by transforming the Sorauren Park Fieldhouse, at 50 Wabash Ave., into a vibrant community space. Now WBS is working to develop an empty and

fenced-off plot of land, located between the fieldhouse and the old linseed oil factory on Wabash Avenue, into a Town Square. Phase one of the Town Square is scheduled to begin any day. This phase includes grading the land, doubling the tree canopy (new trees to be planted in spring 2014), permeable pavers, upgrading the park’s electrical service and laying conduit for new lighting. The WBS has been able to raise $300,000 for this phase, thanks to community support, a Live Green Grant and funds which were freed up by the city councillor Gord Perk’s office. Phase two, including a bake
oven, more park furniture and the sculptural pergola linking the fieldhouse and the old linseed oil factory, requires another fundraising push, starting with this year’s Pumpkin Sale. Many of the pumpkins sold Saturday will likely make a return trip to the park for the annual Sorauren Pumpkin Parade, one of the city’s first pumpkin parades and one of the largest, which takes place on Nov. 1. People from all over the neighbourhood bring their jack-o-lanterns to Sorauren Park where they are lit and set up along the paths to create an enchanting display. Residents can bring their jack-o-lanterns any time on the evening of Nov. 1. The next morning the City of Toronto picks up the pumpkins to be composted.

Meetings look into BIA for Ossington Ave. Last meeting will discuss west Roncesvalles Trinity-Spadina Councillor Mike Layton’s office is investigating the possibility of creating a Business Improvement Area (BIA) on Ossington Avenue. His office invited business owners in the area to a general information meeting today, 2 to 3 p.m., at the Trinity Community Centre or on Wednesday, Nov. 6 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the
Lower Ossington Theatre at 100 Ossington Ave. A BIA is an association of commercial and industrial property owners and business tenants within a defined area who work in partnership with the City to create a thriving, competitive and safe business area that attracts shoppers, diners, tourists and new businesses.
In order to establish a BIA, the majority of local businesses need to be in support. Property and business owners are invited to discuss the possibilities and potential benefits to local businesses.
i
To read an earlier story about the proposed BIA, visit us online at http://bit.ly/ GH2BZX
For years the city has been investigating opening the west side of Roncesvalles Avenue to businesses. After a number of meetings, planning staff came up with a unique set of performance standards, but before council considers putting them in place, one more community meeting will be held, Roncesvalles Avenue is a unique stretch: the west side largely residential apart from
a few home-based businesses – a medical clinic, insurance broker, optometrist and a spa – while the east side of Roncesvalles is a key commercial strip for the area. When applications to open businesses started rolling in, city planners were directed in 2011 to undertake a review of the west side of Roncesvalles Avenue from Marmaduke Street to Marion Street. The existing zoning bylaw
does not permit stand-alone non-residential uses on the west side of Roncesvalles. City planning staff were directed to hold one final meeting to consult with the community on the performance standards before making a final report in late 2013.
i
A meeting is set for Monday from 2 to 9 p.m. at St. Casimir Parish Hall, 156 Roncesvalles Ave.

In the Neighbourhood BLOOR WEST VILLAGE Bloor West Village is a popular shopper and foodie destination located along Bloor Street between Jane Street and Runnymede Road, just west of High Park. It enjoys a high profile in the Toronto real estate market and is a most desirable place to live, thanks to its high walk score and many amenities. The area is known for its over 400 fine retailers, first-class restaurants, cafes and coffee shops. Local residents have all they need right in their own neighbourhood: rec centre, library, bakeries, deli’s, vegetable markets, and other personal and professional service providers. The Bloor West Village BIA is well known for maintaining the European-style village’s beauty and reputation. There are several neighbourhood parks plus spectacular
High Park, Toronto’s largest at 400 acres. Close by, it features Grenadier Pond, hiking trails, dog park, zoo, children’s playground, tennis courts, playing fields, and picnic areas. Its beautiful vegetation varies from wild forest to Japanese cherry trees. Development of Bloor West Village really took off in 1909 when it amalgamated with the city of Toronto. Original residents were mostly Eastern European immigrants, and today a diverse population includes many who speak Ukrainian, Polish, or Russian. Residents tend to be well educated with high incomes. Most households have 4-5 people who are focussed on living the good life, entertaining friends, and staying healthy. Homes are fairly consistent in size and style, most having been built in the early 20th

century. Many are quite grand, and a few have been divided into units. Most lots are on the smaller side, with those closest to the subway commanding a hefty price. Large front porches shaded by majestic oak and maple trees are common. There are numerous familyoriented events and festivals throughout the year, including the renowned Ukrainian Festival each September. Excellent local schools include public, Catholic and private. At the secondary level are Humberside and Runnymede Collegiate Institutes. Easily walkable are the Jane and Runnymede subway stops, plus drivers can get to the Gardiner Expressway and Lake Shore Boulevard within minutes. This vibrant neighbourhood draws visitors from all over the GTA, and many families looking to settle here.

No money available for lengthier Heritage Conservation District study >>>from page 1 Unlike the portion of Queen Street just to the east, the stretch between Bathurst and Roncesvalles doesn’t have Heritage Conservation District status, but councillors Layton (Trinity-Spadina), Ana Bailao (Davenport) and Gord Perks. (Parkdale-High Park) all agreed perhaps there should be, and at the very least the city needs to look at how to protect the character of the street as new development comes in. They also think, in light of all this development, the city needs to take a hard look at the services. The three councillors, who each have portions of West Queen West in their wards, came together to make a motion, which passed at the Oct. 17 meeting of community council, to have a study of West Queen West Street done. Layton explained the stretch is experiencing increasing pressure for redevelopment and the surrounding communities of Niagara,
Trinity-Bellwoods, Ossington Village, Beaconsfield Village, Parkdale and RoncesvallesMacdonell have raised concerns regarding the loss of buildings with heritage attributes, transit capacity, insufficient parking, and protecting the character of the street. “It would take three or four years to get a Heritage Conservation District in place, we have to do something in the meantime so we don’t see the loss of buildings,” Layton said. Although heritage is a part of it, this study will look at a wider range of issues, Layton explained. “It looks at the wider character of the neighbourhood as a shopping district, as a residential neighbourhood,” Layton said. Also, this study, Layton said, can get done quite a bit faster than a Heritage Conservation District study. “At this rate there is no money to do a heritage study in the area, but we need to get the planning right because

there is development applications coming in,” he said. The community can take on fundraising to pay for a Heritage Conservation District themselves, which has been done in other areas, but Layton said that would cost $250,000 or more. “There is a long cue to do these, so unless the community can come up with the money, we are in a long list of areas looking to do
this kind of study,” Layton said. “(The city) can only do a couple a year and they are expensive.” The West Queen West Planning Study will focus on the character of the street and how to plan for new development that complements the built form and heritage attributes. Transit capacity and parking supply will also be reviewed. It will involve public consultation, clarify
what defines the street character and develop a community vision for the future. “There are a lot of very interesting heritage features and we want to make sure that as the neighbouhoods develop we don’t loose those heritage features that give the neighbourhood such a marvelous set of characteristics,” said Councillor Gord Perks. Robert Sysak, executive director of the West Queen West BIA, said the organization is on board with a study of West Queen West and the idea it could result in some guidelines for development in the area, but he doesn’t think a Heritage Conservation District for the entire stretch is the way to go. Certain buildings are worth saving as heritage sites, but he doesn’t think the entire stretch should be blanketed as a Heritage Conservation District. “The area is growing fantastically and a lot of that is due to the new condos and new development,” Sysak said. “It is great to have some

guidelines and we speak to developers about keeping storefronts narrow...but I think you diminish what heritage is if you give it to everything.” Councillor Ana Bailao said she is very interested in eventually having a Heritage Designation on Queen Street West looked into. “Our neighbourhoods have a lot of history and people have been working really hard through gentrification to maintain the character and the history and the feeling of the neighbourhood,” Bailao said. “I wish it had been done a long time ago, but it would be good to step forward with it now.”

Group to meet with minister RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A west-end resident’s group is hoping the province will step in to halt a series of controversial train noise walls planned by Metrolinx. Kevin Putnam and f e l l ow re p re s e n t a t i v e s from the Junction Triangle Rail Committee are scheduled to meet with Ontario Transportation Minister Glen Murray Thursday, Oct. 31 at Queen’s Park to relay the group’s objections to 16-feet high concrete and transparent acrylic barriers Metrolinx wants to begin constructing along the GO Georgetown South rail corridor next year. The group has long opposed the noise walls, which it considers an eyesore intended to hide diesel train traffic from view and make future electrification of the Georgetown corridor less likely. “We want to make it clear to the minster what it is we’re willing to talk about. The man

has given us 30 minutes and we’re intending to come to the meeting with our agenda well-known up front,” said Putnam this week. This is the second time the group has met with the province in regards to the noise walls. But last autumn’s meeting with then transportation minister Bob Chiarelli did not lead to a cancellation of the $20 million project, and Metrolinx is getting ready to issue a public tender for wall construction by the end of the year. The provincial transit planning agency said the barriers need to be in place by 2015, when the Union Pearson (UP) Express air rail link begins operation and creates a significant increase in diesel train traffic along the corridor.
While Putnam is not optimistic the meeting with Murray will lead to overturning the project, he said hopes the minister will keep an open mind on restricting construction of the walls and consider an alternative “living” wall design conceived by architectural firm Brown and Storey already dismissed by Metrolinx as being too expensive to maintain over the long term. “Metrolinx will build these walls until told otherwise,” Putnam said. “And the only one who will tell them otherwise is the minister.” As part of public consultations for the noise walls, Metrolinx organized advisory panels made up of community members from eight west-end neighbourhoods to provide regular feedback on the designs. It held a final community meeting Monday at St. Josaphat’s Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral.

looks at new wayfinding strategy wTTC Colour-coded bus stop markings and a streamlined network map introduced in the last year could be removed in as little as two months. TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said no decision has been made whether to preserve the designs currently seen along the 94 Wellesley bus route since being placed there on a pilot basis in February. Ross suggested some elements of the designs could be incorporated into a proposed system-wide wayfinding strategy, which was to be unveiled to the public at the TTC’s monthly board meeting yesterday. truths about transit report wHard
An advisory panel tasked by Premier Kathleen Wynne to look at a list of transit revenue tools proposed by Metrolinx released its first of three planned reports this week. On Monday, the 13-member panel published Hard Truths about Transit, which dispels what it calls oft-mentioned transit “misconceptions”, such as the notion subways are the
rahul gupta TO in TRANSIT only worthwhile transportation infrastructure investment. The panel, which includes Mayor Rob Ford’s former subway funding plan architect Gordon Chong, must report back to Wynne in December with final recommendations. To read the report, visit www. transitpanel.ca public education campaign to launch wTTC
A public education campaign will launch across the TTC next year to encourage riders to offer up their seats to expectant mothers. The TTC will place new advisory decals aboard all vehicles in support of the measure, which Ross said comes as a result of provincial accessibility requirements and not – as has been reported by some media outlets – a strategy to improve rider etiquette. Also planned is the future installation of blue seat inserts on all TTC vehicles designating priority seating.
streetcar track maintenance wSterling The TTC is currently doing streetcar track maintenance in the area of Dundas and College streets/Sterling Road and Lansdowne Avenue. It requires temporary changes to the 505 Dundas and 506/306 Carlton streetcar service west of Lansdowne Avenue. Buses will replace streetcars on the 505 Dundas and 506 Carlton routes, west of Lansdowne Avenue operating along regular routing. Streetcars will loop at the Dundas/College/Lansdowne area for their return eastbound trip. Streetcar service will resume regular routing on Sunday, Nov. 24 or sooner. Traffic will be reduced to a minimum of one lane in each direction through the work zones during the repair work. The work will typically be conducted weekdays between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. as required. On occasion, work may extend past 11 p.m. to ensure that key operations are completed. Rahul Gupta is The Villager’s transit reporter. His column runs every Thursday. Cat adoption drive continues at shelters Adopt a cat for $25 plus the cost of a licence ($15, $7.50 for seniors) during the Fall in Love campaign, which runs until Oct. 30 at all four City of Toronto animal shelter and adoption partner locations. Several strategies are used to stop the cycle of cat overpopulation in the city: the trap, neuter, return program; the cat licensing program; the
Chip Truck program and the adoption of cats from the shelters. When people adopt a kitten or cat from a City of Toronto shelter, they receive a pet that is microchipped, vaccinated and, most importantly, spayed/neutered so it cannot reproduce. Local Toronto Animal Services shelters include:
Serving the GTA Since 1987
West Region - 146 The East Mall, (Highway 427 and Dundas Street West) South Region - 140 Princes’ Blvd., (Exhibition Place, Horse Palace) The public can view the available animals up for adoption or find an adoption partner location by visiting www. toronto.ca/animalservices or call 416-338-PAWS (7297).
