Seven words that should be banned from political speak In the early 1970s, comedian George Carlin crafted a now legendary stand-up routine called “The seven words you can never say on television.”

Today, you still can’t print those obscenities in a community newspaper. You can, however, hear them nightly on TV, liberally sprinkled throughout episodes of The Sopranos. Heck, you can often hear Tony Soprano string all seven together in the same sentence when he’s really on a roll. But I digress. I bring up the Carlin bit because there are seven words being bandied about all too frequently today that aren’t banned from the airwaves and should be. And they are not coming out of the mouth of some edgy comedian. They are courtesy of people who ought to know better, our corporate and world leaders. What’s more, you can list all of the words in the newspaper and nobody seems to mind. They are: crisis, catastrophe, calamity, emergency, collapse, recession and depression. They are being used in reference to the worldwide economy and we’re hearing them on an hourly basis, it seems. I say enough already. You’re scaring the daylights out of everybody. Last I checked, fear-mongering wasn’t part of your portfolios. You’re paid the big bucks to lead. So do it. If there are problems, and it’s very apparent from your incessant whining that there are, roll up your sleeves, and take care of them. The time wasted delivering this constant doom and gloom play-by-play could be better spent. Besides, it’s

very unbecoming. As far back as kindergarten we were taught to remain calm in a difficult time. We had repeated fire drills during which we were told the importance of maintaining our composure. You sounded the alarm yourselves in November and all you’ve accomplished since is to make everybody around you nervous. It’s high time for saner heads to prevail. And I think I can help. Instead of dining out on the seven words you’re obsessed with, try replacing them with these seven words: Focus, as in keep to the task at hand only. Urgency, as in don’t rest until solutions are found. Accountability, as in, step up and take ownership of your decisions for once. Transparency, as in, no more surreptitious, behind-closeddoors deals. Trust, as in earn it from all of us with your actions. Confidence, as in instill it in us by your deeds. And last but certainly not least, hope, as in, fill us with it with every syllable out of your mouths. So please, no more of this ‘end of the world is upon us’ stuff, OK? Besides, everybody knows that according to the Mayan calendar, the end of the world is a long way off. Their prophecy states unequivocally that it doesn’t come until the Leafs win another Stanley Cup. So you see, there’s absolutely no need to panic. I mean, have the Mayans ever been wrong before?

Terry Demerson is in the midst of a dispute with his landlord regarding the mixed-usage of his living/working space at 25 Liberty St.

TENANTS AT 25 LIBERTY STREET FACE AN UPHILL BATTLE

12

Live/work spaces are at risk for becoming a thing of the past in Liberty Village, but local residents are fighting tooth and nail to keep it. Residents in 25 Liberty are facing an uphill battle with the city and the developer looking to turn the building into a 265,000 square-foot, 12-storey office space meant to employ up to 2,400 people. Terry Demerson, a graphic designer, has lived in the building for the past 12 years and is one of the remaining tenants who uses his unit in a live/work capacity. He said his building used to be full of creative types: photographers, costume

makers, yoga teachers. But as of last year, he has seen them move out. “There was a thriving artist community here and it was interesting and it’s what drew me to the building all those years ago,” Demerson told The Villager. “And now the city and the developers, they see us as an impediment to the growth of the area, which is a problem for us.” Demerson and the remaining residents at 25 Liberty see themselves as the growth that made the area desirable. Since being first notified of the redevelopment over a year ago, they’ve

“Office uses are becoming quite prevalent and the demand is starting to creep up in Liberty Village.” - Christian Giles, city senior planner

“We still don’t have a lot of tools that we can ensure that we get proper live/work uses. So the only way we can protect the employment areas was to remove the live/work component,” Giles explained.

For Demerson, this particular oversight, the lack of a concrete definition and criteria of what a live/work unit is, is what has put him and his remaining neighbours in this frustrating position in the first place. “I have to say that’s the city’s fault for letting that happen,” Demerson said. “It was an overlooked detail…the city can say no, this is a structure we need and develop specific criteria to improve defining what live/work is.” The residents are currently in a state of uncertainty because the city still hasn’t approved the application. The city planner assigned to the file, Graig Uens, said there are still a few major issues that need to be worked out with the developer, specifically the height. The building could also be precedent setting for future development coming to the west end of Liberty Village, so that means looking at all the factors involved. But for now Demerson and his neighbours have a roof over their head but remain in a real estate limbo, waiting. “It’s a balancing act; we’re on a high wire.” Demerson said. “We don’t know when we’re getting pushed off.”

live/work units,” Giles told The Villager. He added the reason the city is looking into this policy is because developers in the area have taken advantage of the loose definition by the city. He cites the example of the condos at 5 Hanna in Liberty Village that have built small 500 square feet units with a niche for a desk and label it a live/work unit. The city, he said, is trying to avoid situations like that.

@InsideTOnews

formed the West Liberty Live Work Tenants Association (WLLWTA) group to fight for their live/work status. The building, which is considered historic, currently contains 42 dwelling units that are live/work. The applicant, Sweeny Sterling Finlayson and Co Architects, is proposing to retain the building but remove and convert those units into a commercial space. The developer has offered to relocate the residents to another one of its buildings, however the location and the size of those units hasn’t been specified to the tenants. “As an artist it was a place to have a lot of freedom and save money. The thought of being pushed out of this for development and looking at two spaces is twice the rent. It’s ridiculous,” Demerson said. “It’s the biggest stress factor. They’re truly displacing people.” According to Christian Giles, a senior planner with the city, the land 25 Liberty is on is defined as employment and that status needs to be preserved. “Office uses are becoming quite prevalent and the demand is starting to creep up in Liberty Village. To avoid the residential spread from the east coming to the west side of Liberty we have to protect the employment lands and that means we have to reassess the policy that permitted

Transit Project Assessment Process - Public Meetings Our Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is now home to nearly 7 million people – heading towards 10 million by 2041. This growth is a sign of success and opportunity. But as we grow, so too must our transportation network – the lifeblood that connects this great region and each of our communities. Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario, is bringing more transit and more connections to more places within the GTHA. Every community transit project, big or small, plays a vital role in the regional transportation system. We want to share our plans and get your feedback. Starting in November we will be hosting community open houses to share information and updates on three of Metrolinx’s projects to build new track and electrification infrastructure. We will be seeking your input on these specific plans and feedback on proposed mitigation strategies: GO Rail Network Electrification Transit Project Assessment Process (TPAP) (Hydro One as co-proponents): gotransit.com/electrification • Environmental Baseline Condition Reports have been prepared, Impact Assessment Reports to evaluate potential environmental effects of the project are underway, and stakeholder consultation is in progress. The project is currently in the Pre-Planning Phase of the TPAP. • The focus of this round of public meetings will be to provide an update on the project and conceptual design of the Traction Power Supply and Distribution components.
