class is in session

The community has the chance to view and give feedback on design concepts for a noise wall planned by Metrolinx/ GO Transit. The walls are proposed to mask the sound of increased diesel train traffic on the Georgetown rail corridor, but have been highly criticized by residents and transit groups who are calling on Metrolinx/ GO Transit to explore “living” green walls. Some communities along the corridor have also asked that no walls be built in certain areas until the true traffic and noise conditions are understood, especially in the context of proposed electrification of the rail corridor, which would mean quieter and lighter vehicles. Two upcoming meetings will show the noise wall design concepts Metrolinx/Go Transit have come up with. It is also an opportunity for residents to review the preliminary design options and tell GO Transit what they think about the noise wall design concepts. Meetings are set for Sept. 17 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at The Lithuanian House at 1573 Bloor St. W. and Thursday, Sept. 19 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Metrolinx/ GO transit Presentation Centre, 901 King St. W., at the corner of Strachan Ave. View the concepts online www.gotransit.com/gts. For more information, email gts@ gotransit.com or call 416-5811300.

City cites safety concerns for Masaryk Park overhaul erin hatfield ehatfield@insidetoronto.com You want people to congregate in the city’s public parks, but you don’t want them doing so for the wrong reasons — that is the challenge Masaryk Park currently faces. Located behind the MasarykCowan Community Recreation Centre at 220 Cowan Avenue in

South Parkdale, Masaryk Park is home to a wading pool, some play structures and swings. It also houses the award winning HOPE Garden and the new South Parkdale Good Food Market. It is an active park, but is also known to draw some people engaging in illicit behaviour. Those two worlds collided on Saturday, August 17, 2013,

at 5:15 p.m., when a 15-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a man at Masaryk Park. Shortly after the assault the city came in and quickly did some work to improve the safety of the park, according to Rob Andrusevich, the Manager of Public Relations and Issues Management for the city’s parks, forestry and recreation department.

Mainly aimed at improving visibility, a small hill was taken down a foot or two, some bushes were cut back and taken down and some fencing was taken down to improve site lines and public access. The city also removed a picnic table and a second table will be moved closer to the child play area from its current spot, >>>furniture, page 12

StoryMobs bring books to life, flash mob style ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com Combining costumes, play and stories with a flash mob approach, StoryMobs have created a new way to bring children’s books to life. StoryMobs are about celebrating the words on the page in a way that is “super, super fun,” according to organizers Gretel Meyer Odell and Roxanne Dean. “The main thing is to really enjoy the book and really enjoy the story,” Deans said. “And let the people we surprise with this feel the same way too.” The premise is: the women choose a book and secret location. Participants prepare costumes and props and then, the day before the StoryMob, the time and location are released. Participants meet and then parade to a public location and act out the tale. “The whole point is that it is spontaneous and it is not rehearsed and perfected,” Deans said. “It is about being in the moment and enjoying the story we are sharing.” StoryMobs started as a series of four events. It began in July with Where the Wild Things Are at Nathan Phillips Square then Jillian Jiggs and most recently The Paper Bag Princess at Trinity Bellwoods Park. The final in this series of StoryMobs is set for Sept. 7 sometime between 1 and 4 p.m. at a secret location. This time the tale will be

what’s on

The women volunteer their time and, to help with some of their printing costs, have received a small sponsorship from three independent local bookstores: Ella Minnow Children’s Bookstore, Mabel’s Fables and Another Story Bookshop. “We are figuring out how the project can grow and hoping we can find a body out there that would be willing to support this work,” Odell said. Odell said the women have plans to continue the StoryMobs beyond this initial series and are in the midst of planning fall and winter series of the StoryMobs. “There will be many more things to see as we go on including experimenting with other kinds of literature, so it isn’t outside the realm of possibility that you might see some adult literature, young adult literature and some crazy and unexpected things,” Odell said. There have been inquiries from cities across the country about how to start StoryMobs of their own. Odell said part of their future plans are to create a model to support other cities in launching events of their own. “We have our first satellite StoryMob happening on the same day as our Green Eggs and Ham in Wolfville, Nova Scotia,” she said.

Dr. Seuss’s Green Eggs and Ham. Each event has drawn more participants than the last, with more than 200 people from all over the GTA joining the StoryMob at Trinity Bellwoods Park. The story is broken into pieces, which are read by volunteers, both children and adults. “Everyone who attends a story mob helps to tell the story, you don’t need to be a reader to feel like you are an essential part of bringing the story to life,” said Odell. Odell, a mother of two from the Brockton Triangle who owns

Fancy Pants Kids, a local dress-up play clothes company, said the StoryMobs are her way of creating a relevant and hip event for families. “I was looking to create some fantastic free, family event that would involve costumes,” Odell said. Early in the project Deans, a lifelong Beach resident, came on as a partner. The women knew each other from their time in the theatre industry and reconnected when Deans was running a book store on Queen Street East.

Odell will send out emails and updates with tips for ways to prepare and opportunities to volunteer to read parts of the story. A little less than half are children and Odell said some adults do come on their own, out of nostalgia for the book or people who love to dress up or are really into flash mobs. “They have a really broad appeal,” Odell said. “We expect it will be our biggest one yet as we have been picking up a lot of steam as we go and the book is so very popular.” StoryMobs are free to join.

Wanted: a proper discussion on cycling

J

umping on your bicycle and hitting the streets of Toronto has become a complicated issue. It gets the backs up of both cyclists and motorists. Each side has complaints about the other: cyclists disobey the rules of the road; motorists don’t look out for cyclists. This kind of two-way antagonism helps no one, it only fuels fires that seem easily sparked. There has been much cycling talk lately. The city’s chief planner, Jennifer Keesmaat, teamed up with Cycle Toronto and took the cycling discussion on the road – on her bike. Using hydro corridors to allow for dedicated cycling, and of course dedicated bike lanes across the city all deserve listening to. On the heels of a study by University of Toronto PhD student Adrian Verster, who created a list of 50 dangerous intersections for cyclists in the city, a discussion on how to best implement cycling in Toronto is needed. And quickly. The supposed ‘war on the car our view / bicycle’ needs to stop. It serves no one. And with the city’s population growing quickly, cycling Integrated will become an ever-increasing mode of transportation for many plan for cycling a must people. Not surprisingly, the most dangerous intersections to cycle in the city are located in the old city of Toronto – on Bloor and Queen streets. However, there are dangerous intersections for cyclists across the city, including Willowdale and Empress avenues in North York (#23). If news reports prove anything, it is that there is always the chance you can get hurt – even killed – while riding your bike. It doesn’t matter where you ride your bike. Ontario Minister of Transportation Glen Murray announced on Friday the province’s 20-year vision for cycling, with the goal to make Ontario the number one province for cycling in Canada. This ambitious goal will need funding, dedication, and a clear vision tailored to each city across Ontario. A cookie-cutter approach will not work. The entirety of Toronto City Council is not expected to meet until October, but they are all back to work after Labour Day, including local community council meetings set for Sept. 10. Torontonians should not shy away from pushing for a proper, integrated cycling plan for the city. It’s been long discussed, much maligned, and often ignored. Councillors in the downtown core raise the issue often, but this should not be another downtown versus suburbs discussion.

Thanks to a fine balance, Toronto ranks high

F

or all of those who refuse to believe the worst about Toronto, our ranking as one of the best places in which to live among 140 cities worldwide must be reassuring. All of the top five cities – Melbourne, Vienna, Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary – share similarities: they are mid-sized, and all have medium-level densities. The criteria by which they were rated include political stability, health care, culture, the environment, education, and infrastructure. When the list is extended to the top 10, and so takes in cities from Finland and New Zealand, additional similarities can be found, such as all being part of economies that value both private and public investment. Equally remarkable is that the most famous cities are missing from the top. For instance those cities with cachet or buzz, such as Paris, London or New

david soknacki beyond the headlines York, are well down. So are others that excel in just a couple of criteria at the expense of others. Hong Kong comes to mind: it has enviable economic growth and superior hard infrastructure, but extremely high densities, many inadequate services, and a murky political environment. Many Torontonians, who think their hometown is full of shortcomings, have much to learn. Perhaps the first lesson ought to be in self-esteem. We are near the top of the list not because we do one thing perfectly, but because we are able to achieve a balance so well. While we might moan about gridlock, we are investing in both transit expansion and major road repair. Privately and publicly we give to culture and

support environmental initiatives yet we have embraced frugality as a culture at City Hall. The same balance is evident when looking at development. Much of urban planning thinking centres around using public resources efficiently, which leads to intensification. Yet pushed to extremes, overdevelopment creates its own problems, which are hugely expensive to fix and sometimes takes decades. Set against these forces of capitalism and orthodoxy is a jumble of municipal regulation and a provincial tribunal, which often produces a sensible balance between density and preservation. None of Toronto’s strengths would be sustainable without a strong local economy. Here we have achieved success as well. Our most recent employment figures are up, as are retail sales. In addition, our low office and

industrial vacancy rates are a sure a sign of healthy investment. Like our other successes, Toronto’s economic strength is not due to any one sector. We have successfully although painfully changed from competing as a low-cost manufacturer into being a centre for value-added services across a range of industries such as finance, aerospace, education and health care. In short, we have achieved a quality of living that is the envy of the world by moving with the times and achieving a balance in so many areas of our urban life. For the future our goal must not to worry about being the biggest, the flashiest, or excelling in one virtue at the expense of others, but rather to continue the balancing that we do so well. Girl Guide flying high after Canadian International Air Show Nine-year-old earns aeronautics badge and meets pilots CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com

L

ittle Sydney McMahon got the VIP treatment at the Canadian International Air Show over the weekend – including a front row seat to the roaring show, meetand-greets with each of the fearless pilots, and a very special presentation of an aeronautics badge to add to her Girl Guide sash. “My favourite part was when the Dragon Lady and Red Star were up there,” said Sydney, 9, who belongs to the 163rd Toronto Girl Guides troop out of Kingsway Lambton United Church in Etobicoke. “They were, like, splitting and they were doing tricks.” Sydney, who attends Howard Junior Public School, was just one of about 40 Girl Guides from across the GTA invited to the Air Show this year. First,

they were chauffeured to the site by bus, courtesy of Toronto Police Services, then they were treated to VIP seats just below the action thanks to the Canadian International Air Show. Sydney’s mom Laura McMahon, who helps lead the 163rd troop, called the experience a “fabulous” one – for both the girls involved and for their parents. “We had such a great time. I wish the girls could have more experiences like that,” she said Monday, noting that the acrobatic shows were favourites among the girls. “I’ve never seen the air show like that – we were able to see and hear everything up so close. It was fabulous. The kids loved it.” Seated just west of Ontario Place on the waterfront, the participating Girl Guides, who hailed from all across Toronto,

Burlington and Hamilton, got the chance to mingle with the pilots after they’d performed. “Each set of pilots that came in would talk to the girls about what they did, what kind of planes they had and what the capability of those planes is. They made it really interactive for them,” McMahon said, noting that, in addition to pilots from the worldrenowned Snowbirds and CF-18 Hornet demo team, the Girl Guides had the opportunity to meet and ask questions of the air traffic controller from the air show’s ‘boss tower’ and parachutists from the Lucas Oil Jumpers, among many others. “It was quite exciting for them.” At the end of the show – after Sydney and her fellow Girl Guides had assembled their Styrofoam model airplanes and had the chance to review their air speed

books – came quiz time. In order to earn their aeronautics badge, each of the girls had to properly identify the parts of a plane on a diagram. “It wasn’t that hard,” boasted Sydney, noting that with the addition of Sunday’s new badge, her sash is getting pretty full. “Now I have 15 badges – travel, first aid, birthday planning, cultural awareness, ice skating, my pet, cookie, bicycling, hiking, singing, camp fire leading, exploring, canoeing, basic camp and now aeronautics.”

PUBLIC CONSULTATION MEETINGS NOISE WALL DESIGNS – HAVE YOUR SAY! GO Transit would like your input on the design of the Georgetown South (GTS) Project noise walls being built in your neighbourhood. Be a part of shaping one of the major projects of Metrolinx’s regional transportation plan, The Big Move. Since 2011, we have been consulting with the communities along the corridor about our noise mitigation plan. Last year we began recruiting members from eight segments of the corridor to be a part of Community Advisory Committees (CAC). These committees have brought together residents, business owners, community associations and elected representatives to discuss how the wall designs can be integrated into the existing neighbourhood landscape. Since April 2013, we have held over 24 meetings with CAC members along the GTS corridor. Design concepts have been developed based on ideas and concerns brought forward by the CAC members.

City beautifying traffic signal boxes A city beautifying project will see traffic signal boxes wrapped and adorned with public art to discourage graffiti and illegal postering. When the Outside the Box initiative is completed, the entire surface of some 2,200 metal boxes, which house the controls to operate and co-ordinate traffic signals, will be covered in a wrapping made from a special coating intended to make graffiti removal easier. Two types of wrapping were created for the project, containing designs from renowned Canadian graphic artists Gary Taxali and the late Moira McElhinney. Combat vandalism A jury selected panel of 11 artists through the StreetARToronto initiative (StART) will also hand-paint 20 traffic control boxes between now and Oct. 25 at various locations. The designs, according to city public works chair Denzil MinnanWong are intended to foster an artistic sense of city identity as well as

combat vandalism. “We look forward to beautifying these boxes and hope that trafficsignal boxes around the city can become an impressive public art collection,” said Minnan-Wong in a recent statement. The project is part of the city’s ongoing campaign to reduce graffiti. Similar street furniture wrapping is employed by other Canadian municipalities and the Toronto Financial District BIA recently installed vinyl wrapping on traffic poles along the intersection of King Street West and Bay Street.

Furniture removal discouraging: Friends group >>>from page 1 according to Andrusevich. “Sometimes benches and picnic tables are congregating areas for folks, who in some cases are not following the bylaws and doing things that are disruptive,” Andrusevich said. “Sometimes when we remove those objects it helps the problem go away.” According to Andrusevich, these changes were based in part on a meeting the city had in March with the Friends of Masaryk Park group where they did a safety walkabout. “A number of options to improve the safety of the park were discussed at that point and some of these ideas were discussed at the time,” he said. “Things like removing visible barriers.” However, the removal of furniture is not something the Friends group is on side with. Susan Armstrong, one of the creators of the Friends of Masaryk Park group, said some of the changes were welcome, like the bushes being cut back and the fence being opened up. “For the most part we are pleased that the city took action,” Armstrong said. “But it is unfortunate that something like this had to happen

first.” The Friends group has long been pushing for safety improvements in the park, but Armstrong doesn’t believe removing benches and picnic tables is a means to that end. “The idea that removing benches from the park would solve a problem, just seems like this outdated idea towards safety in the park,” she said. “You need benches in the park to make it attractive to park users.” The removal of any park furniture is temporary, Andrusevich said, adding it is safely being stored at the recreation centre. “We are doing it temporarily to see if it has a positive impact and ultimately, in the long term the enjoyability of the park will be better for the people using it for positive reasons,” Andrusevich said. picnic tables remain in the park. Since its inception the Friends of Masaryk Park has aimed to create a different kind of park, one that is welcoming to all the different kinds of people living in South Parkdale. Part of what the group has been working hard to get is more park furniture. “It’s all about eyes on the park, you need people to be there, and the more people in the park the less the chance of there being some kind of problem.” Armstrong said the Friends group is also frustrated with the lack of consultation by the city on matters concerning the Park. Abigail Pugh, who also lives in South Parkdale, is a member of the Friends group. In her mind, the removal of any park furniture discourages people from using the space, and having few people using the space does not make it safer, Pugh said. “I think it is a slap in the face to the community to rush in and take things away,” Pugh said. Andrusevich said the city has made a commitment to have a total of five benches in the park, but as to the timing of their installation, that is yet to be determined.

Fall service now under way for TTC Cyclist charts dangerous intersections The TTC boosted service to many of its transit routes as of Sept. 1 Thirty-three bus routes, plus streetcar and subway service, have ended lessfrequent summer service in response to increased ridership with the start of the fall schedule. Students looking to get a student photo ID can opt to have their picture taken at Sherbourne Station from Monday to Friday between 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The ID is a must to purchase a discounted monthly pass or pay a student fare. New on-street parking spaces were made available to car-share users this week. Around 26 additional spots are now open in nine locations around the downtown core and East York, which expands a pilot project launched in 2009 by the city to encourage carsharing.

There are three carshare providers serving the city: Car2Go, Zipcar and Autoshare. An estimated 40,000 Torontonians make regular use of car-shares. Toronto will also host the 2013 CarSharing Association conference Sept. 16 to 17. station gets new GO service wExhibition

RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com A graduate student’s analysis of 24 years of bike collision data suggests cyclists are more at risk on streets without bike lanes. Adrian Verster’s study examines 31,000 accidents involving cyclists taken from the city’s Toronto Traffic Safety Unit’s ( TTSU) reporting between 1986 and 2010. As the incidents were GPS tagged, he was able to pinpoint which streets the accidents were taking place in order to come up with a list of the 50 most dangerous intersections in the city to cycle. Three of the Top 10 are in The Villager coverage area: • Queen St. W. & Niagara St.; • Bloor St. W. & Brock Ave.; • Lake Shore Blvd. W. & Jameson Ave.; He examined collision statistics released annually

by the TTSU based primarily on data taken from police reports detailing the nature of cycling accidents, where it took place, who was at fault and other factors. As an avid cyclist with an interest in statistical analysis, Verster had downloaded the publicly available data on cycling collisions, which he planned to examine in detail in between completing his PhD in genomics at the University of Toronto. But what really motivated him to complete the study was the serious accident his girlfriend Kate had while riding her bike a month ago near Avenue and Davenport Roads, fourth on his list of dangerous intersections. At first, Verster found the busiest intersections, like those along Yonge Street, had the largest number of collisions. That came as no surprise given the high volumes of traffic. But when he “normal-

ized the data” by taking into account existing traffic volume at intersections and the surrounding area, he began to see patterns emerge along two prominent streets. “Bloor Street and Queen Street began to show up a lot and the similarity is they don’t have bike lanes,” said Verster this week. “They’re used a lot for commuting and I’m almost certain that’s why they showed up in the analysis.” He also noticed how intersections which “twist and turn” were more likely than straight roads to have more collisions, such as at Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street. He also found accidents were more like to take place during the evening rush hour commute. Complete list of 50 deadliest intersections for cyclists: taken from: http://ajverster. github.io/blog/2013/08/25/mostdangerous-bike-intersections-intoronto/

Eleven Division’s new police building garnering accolades

Oldest part retained Despite the fact Toronto City Council gave its permission to demolish the building at 2054 Davenport Rd., police expressed a willingness to try and conserve as much of the building as possible given that local residents were in favour of saving it. The architects felt the same. Stantec Architecture retained the oldest part of the building, built in 1913, in its entirety and only demolished the 1960s addition to make room for a contemporary police facility in behind. The station includes a community room that can accommodate

40 people where the school library once was, administration and investigation offices as well as a cell area. The parkette was retained and refurbished with help from the city’s parks department. There is visitor parking on the west side of the building and an accessible ramp leading to the main entrance. The new division is a completely barrierfree, accessible building. “I’m delighted about it,” said 11 Division Unit Commander Peter Lennox of the recognition. “Our facilities people, the architects – they’re the real winners.” Fourteen Division was second in the People’s Choice voting. “Each project involved a considerable amount of public involvement and open communication,” said Pera. “Personally, I have seen superintendents from both divisions and the command make real efforts to involve the neighbourhood. The Toronto Police Service has certainly respected the value of public input to affect major design decisions.”

Eleven Division police’s new station on Davenport Road as been deemed the best new building in the city by its residents. The division was also the recipient of the Paul Oberman Award for Adaptive Reuse and Heritage Restoration. “It’s great. It feels really great – that’s really it,” said Toronto Police Services senior project co-ordinator Enrico Pera of the facilities management department. “When we first saw the building, we knew it could be something special. I’m really pleased, it’s a beautiful statement for that area.” Even the process that officers took to create their new station – transforming the former Carleton Village Public School into a stateof-the-art building for 11 Division was unique, Pera said. “There was apprehension at first,” he admitted. However, a dedicated group of area residents as part of a heritage advisory committee played a key role in the repurposing of the school. “They were fantastic people to

work with,” he said. “When people take pride in their neighbourhood, you can do great things.” Michael Moxam and colleague Tom Kyle of the firm Stantec Architecture can take credit for the design of the building, situated at the corner of Davenport and Osler avenues. The community was pleased the two preserved the historical importance of the building, including its front façade.
