For Deren and Marlene Hasip, 2008 was the year their lives changed forever.

That year, their three-yearold-daughter Selen was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a cancer where too many immature white blood cells are made by the body’s bone marrow.

“That’s where the rollercoaster began,” Deren said.

Selen’s parents noticed something different with their daughter when her bruises caused by playing with her brothers wouldn’t heal.

The couple was concerned and took her to their pediatrician, who found irregularities in her blood stream.

“We thought it was a lack of iron...at most she would have a blood disorder. Cancer is the last thing you try not to think of,” said Marlene, adding she was in denial when she first went to the pediatrician at the Hospital for Sick Children.

“I thought it wasn’t true. They did a bone marrow test the next day, so I held onto that hope that it wasn’t true. When it came back positive, that was the day my reality hit about what was coming.” >>>FAMILY, page 2

The family credits the children’s hospital for getting them through such a tough time.

“It was a long two and half years. SickKids is great for making it more than just a hospital,” Marlene said.

Selen is now nine and has been cancer free for two years.

The family tried to keep her life as close to normal as possible.

Before her diagnosis, Selen took swimming and ballet and continued to participate as long as her health would allow her to.

“Simple things like playdates, playgrounds and birthday parties changed for us,”

Selen has been doing well and is currently a patient ambassador for SickKids.

That’s why the family hosted a car wash Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Tire Spot, 89 Rivalda Rd. There were exotic cars, balloon animals, a barbecue and face painting. They’ll be taking donations.

They raised $3,900 for the Great Camp Adventure Walk 2014, a 20-kilometre walk that had various stations allowing kids to partake in different camp activities.

“It’s a spin to the regular walk. It’s all about the kids.

It’s all about what they love to do,” Marlene said.

Selen’s team for the walk was Selen’s Sunshine and her

team included her brothers Aiden and Evren.

According to Deren, people who get diagnosed with cancer at a young age often have to grow up quickly and essentially have their “childhood robbed.”

“It’s gut-wrenching,” Deren said. “SickKids tries to give them their precious childhood back and that can’t be done without donations and fundraising.”

He added he was impressed with the various support networks available to not just the patient, but every member of the family in some way.

He stressed the importance of being able to connect with others who are going through something similar or have already gone through it.

“You really can’t find that network anywhere else,” Deren said.

Parkdale filmmaker chronicles a fascinating journey from top of charts to subway performer ERIN HATFIELD plv@insidetoronto.com Parkdale filmmaker João ( Jon) Pácifer said amazing stories are everywhere.

“The stories are all around us, Pácifer said. “You just have to stop for a little bit and look around and you are going to find them.”

Roger Ellis was one such story; a Scarborough musician who regularly plays in the Toronto subway system, with about 10 to 20,000 people passing him by daily. But when Pácifer heard Ellis’ music echoing through the Sheppard subway station, he knew there must be something more.

“I stopped and was staring at him thinking ‘who is this guy?’,” said Pácifer, who lives in South Parkdale.

“I got it in my head that he might have a story to tell.”

Pácifer snapped a photo of Ellis’ setup and CDs, and went on his way, but Pácifer continued to think about him Pácifer, 26, first arrived in Toronto in 2012 from his native Brazil to attend film school. He said he took note of street musicians, particularly those playing in the subway.

“One thing caught my attention, because in Brazil if you see a musician like that, most of the time they are very talented, but most of the time they will be poor people who are trying to earn a living on the street,” Pácifer said. “But here in Canada, those (street musicians) looked more like legit artists.”

In his third term at the Toronto Film School at Yonge-Dundas Square, Pácifer took a documentary film course. He decided it would be a good time to try to find out more about Ellis.

Through research, Pácifer learned Ellis had been the guitarist for Edward Bear, a Toronto-based Canadian pop-rock group formed in the late 1960s.

The band had a number of Top 5 hits in Canada and charted in the United States.

Edward Bear’s biggest hit came in 1972, when Last Song charted at No. 1 in Canada and peaked at No. 3 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The band won a Juno Award in 1973 for outstanding group performance before disbanding in 1974.

“When I started to research him, I realized he actually was famous,” Pácifer said. “My mind exploded and I knew I had to make a movie about this guy.”

Pácifer said before even approaching a subject for a documentary, a good filmmaker will find out all he can about the subject.

He said he learned that from mentor Waldir de Pina who he worked with at a production company in Brazil.

So Pácifer started a file on Ellis where he would compile clippings and articles he found on the man. He carried it everywhere with him.

He read everything he could on Ellis, the band Edward Bear and the other band members Paul Weldon and Larry Evoy. But he was initially unable to connect with Ellis.

Meanwhile, Pácifer’s friend, who had visited Canada and then returned to Brazil, asked Pacifer to help a Canadian family with their computer.

When he went to the family’s house, he learned the father played the keyboard for Pácifer.

“I just got the feeling that this guy was too cool to be a random

person,” Pácifer said. “At the end of the meeting, I asked him if he had an album.”

The man pulled a vinyl album off the self and handed it to Pácifer.

“I looked at it and I saw ‘Edward Bear’ and I freaked out,” Pácifer said.

Coincidence It turns out that the man was Weldon, the keyboard player for the band.

“I had my file with me so I pulled it out and put it in his hands and I told him I had been researching them... It was the craziest coincidence,” Pácifer said.

In the end, Pácifer was able to connect with three members of Edward Bear and film them together talking about their past and Ellis’s current career playing in the subway.

The result was a short documentary titled Going for the Gold. That was the title of the song Ellis was playing when Pácifer first heard him in the subway station.

He produced the film with Imagineus Films, the production company Pácifer runs with fellow Toronto Film School graduates Andrew Gerhold and Eric Michael Campbell.

the whole message.”

Pácifer recently won the Best Documentary Film award at the Toronto Film School Festival of Films, which featured 42 short films by students in the school’s film production, acting and writing diploma programs.

But, even more rewarding, Pácifer said, was having Roger Ellis and Weldon at the screening of the film during the festival.

“To see the look on his face and Paul’s face was the most rewarding thing of this whole project,” Pácifer said.

“This is a social duty. You are giving someone voice to tell their story.”

Ellis, who now lives near Warden and Hwy. 401 in Scarborough, said filming the documentary was a lot of fun.

mentary I was amazed at what a nice editing job he did,” Ellis said following the film’s premiere at the Festival of Films.

“I think he is a really great filmmaker...I am sure he will go on to make some really great films.”

Pácifer will graduate from Toronto Film School at the end of this month, and will then turn his attention to submitting his film to festivals all over the world.

Christopher Lane, the coordinator of the film production program, and Rick Bennett, the associate director of education at the Toronto Film School, signed on to executive produce the film.

Lane explained that means they will help Pácifer package the film to submit to other festivals.

“When a student brings their work to an impressive level, but they don’t know how to take it to that next step, that is when we are willing to give of our own time to mentor them,” Lane said.

“Now that his film is complete, there is a product there that I can see we can show him how to get it into festivals and leverage it to his next move in his career.”

“You can never say 100 per cent for sure, but I can say with some confidence that it will get into some festivals. It is really well done.”

Pan Am Games to highlight Toronto

he Pan Am/Parapan Games are coming to Toronto next summer, bringing thousands of athletes and tens of thousands of fans and media with them.

Tickets went on sale this week, and Toronto residents have until Oct. 6 to order early-bird tickets for the events they most want to see by going to TORONTO2015.org/tickets While they are not on the same scale as the Olympics, the Pan Am Games will feature about 6,000 top athletes from 41 countries in North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean competing in 36 sports.

From July 7 to 26, Toronto will our view be the place to be for competition in many of those sports including track and field, aquatGames ics, basketball, BMX biking, tennis and much more. And accessible right after the Pan Am Games across city finish, the Parapan Am Games take centre stage in Toronto from Aug. 7 to 15.

What makes these Games especially exciting is that not all of the events are centred in the downtown core. They’ve been spread out in facilities from the York University campus in North York to Centennial Park in Etobicoke and into east Scarborough.

It makes the games accessible to so many more fans, and will in a number of cases give residents the opportunity to watch international athletics in facilities they can walk to from their homes. excitement

From what we see and hear among our newspaper’s readers, there’s great excitement about next summer’s Games.

Residents are looking forward to attending events in state-of-the-art facilities such as the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Scarborough which will host aquatics, fencing, pentathlon and roller sports events next summer.

They are also looking forward to the legacy of these facilities in their communities.

Stalled mayoral race gives voters time to ponder the big issues The Ford family’s personal and political kerfuffle sent shockwaves through the mayoral campaign – serious enough to send things into a bona fide stall.

On Monday and Tuesday, three of four mayoral debates died on the vine.

Olivia Chow got out Tuesday morning to host a news conference to let voters know four west-end progressive councillors were behind her mayoral bid. John Tory, the candidate responsible for putting the kibosh on those three debates, held a news conference an hour later that was somehow less surprising: to remind voters he intended to keep promises related to gridlock he’d made during the summer.

Up until the Tuesday deadline for this column, newly minted mayoral candidate Doug Ford was

david nickle the city spending his time at the bedside of newly minted Ward 2 council candidate Rob Ford – not saying much of anything.

Quiet times aren’t always a bad thing, though. And in this one we should sit a spell and think about where we are, where we’ve been, and where we want to go.

Until last week, Toronto was in what ex-mayoral candidate David Soknacki correctly pegged as a referendum on Mayor Rob Ford. For four years, Ford put many Torontonians through a meat grinder of embarrassment and insult.

His activities somehow provided some measure of comfort to others. We lined up on either side of that

very line Ford drew: with Ford More Years on one side, and really everything else on the other.

When Doug Ford gets going, he’ll be presenting Mayor Ford’s agenda without the personal issues – and also without his little brother’s charisma that would make him a serious threat. Which is to say: here on in, this election might finally be about ideas.

Well, not entirely the ideas: we’re all a little partisan, some casting ballots for New Democrats and certain Liberals, others voting for certain other Liberals and Conservatives.

Some of us feel strongly enough about that to pick a mayor now.

But for the rest of us: what an unexpected opportunity to pick not so much the person of the mayor, but the kind of city we

want.

We might ask: do we really want to pay more taxes to build a subway in Scarborough and more stations on an electrified GO line? Would we rather send that property tax levy to build a downtown relief line, and skim more tax revenue from the land transfer tax to build a downtown relief subway line and buy more buses? Do we want to contract out garbage collection? What about bike lanes?

It’s so much easier to think about these questions when we’re not also deciding how we feel about all the other ugly matters that have consumed us until now. Clarity is a rare and wonderful thing. Best savour it while it lasts.

Kevin Coburn runs 12 hours to Barrie in memory of stepdaughter HILARY CATON hcaton@insidetoronto.com Five years after his stepdaughter, Meagan, died of cancer Kevin Coburn is back running again and this time it’s for a great cause.

“I’ve been an active runner for a long time. I’ve been running since high school, but when Meagan was diagnosed I didn’t run very much,” Coburn said. “It took me a couple of years to get back into running.

I had to let the dust settle after Meagan’s passing and that took me a couple of years.”

On Saturday, Coburn laced up his runners in the cold and wet weather for the 101kilometre challenge to raise money for the Hospital for Sick Children. A local allergy-free restaurant, Feast, an online real estate site called Trystingtrees.com and the Barrie Running Room, sponsored his run.

“It’s like a Forrest Gump run. I’m just going to put on my shoes and run, ” said the 41-year-old Parkdale resident.

Running a double marathon has always been on Coburn’s bucket list. He’s also always wanted to do something meaningful in Meagan’s memory and with this run he gets to do both.

“This is my thing to do for her,” he said.

5 a.m., up until he got to the north end of Newmarket.

“It was quite rainy and cold,” he said. “It rained continuously.”

For his 101-kilometre Challenge he ran for 12 hours from Queen Street and Gladstone Avenue to Minets Point Park in Barrie and raised $7,000 for the Allergy Program at SickKids in the process.

Before the run he was at the $1,500 mark, now he’s more than half way to his goal, with a total of $4,000 raised to date.

“We were really happy with that. For our first time

doing anything like that, we’re ecstatic,” Coburn told the Villager.

Meagan was seven years old when she was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2005. She died in February 2009.

“She was great little girl.

She loved music and dance,” Coburn said. “Her favourite toys were Bratz. Every time she saw a new one, she needed to have it.”

The family was living in Barrie at the time of her diagnosis and they travelled often to SickKids for treatments.

“They (SickKids) were there from the very beginning and they were a great help throughout the treatments and helped us get through something as big as this,” Coburn said. “I was so impressed with the facilities and what they do on a day-to-day basis for children.”

It’s the well-rounded support Coburn had from SickKids that pushed him to do this inaugural fundraiser and raise awareness for the children’s hospital.

“I will be doing it again next year. I’ll be sitting down with SickKids to discuss how to make this a public event,” he said.

When Coburn arrived in Barrie he was greeted by friends and family at the finish line, which he thought was “sweet.”

“Overall it was a great experience.”

The local home-building industry isn’t hurting – it employs 322,000 people and Toronto council approved $21

billion in new developments, including 7,000 condominium units, last month alone – but Ontario Home Builders’ Association members still have complaints about the time the city takes to approve building permits and zoning changes.

During a morning debate, which was overshadowed by Mayor Rob Ford’s dramatic departure from the mayoral race later last Friday, Chow and Tory refused to budge on the city’s revenue-taking, but offered the industry other help.

Chow promised, if elected, to defer development charges for at least 10 years on projects containing 20 per cent affordable housing and, as added incentive, would approve their zoning and site plans within one year “because faster approval means saving money.�

Getting approval for a development, including a zoning change, took 18 months when she was a city councillor, and now takes three years, Chow told industry representatives at the Westin Prince Toronto hotel in York Mills. “That’s insane.�

But while Chow laid some blame for delays with different city hall departments she said need to be brought together, she added those departments are “understaffed somewhat�

Tory said he’d challenge developers to build private affordable housing units on available public lands, such as on Toronto Parking Authority lots or Toronto Community Housing properties.

The former Ontario Progressive Conservative leader said the city could speed its approval process by installing new technology builders could use online, instead of dealing in person with a city bureaucracy still “wheeling around files in shopping carts.�

After hearing from the renovation side of the industry, Tory said small building projects should have a new and different review process for building permits, one that “doesn’t get to the political level.�

When one OHBA member called “inclusionary zoning� – a city standard that would force 20 per cent of any project to be affordable – a failed idea, Chow disagreed. “People are having a tough time. We have to do something,� said the former Trinity-Spadina MP. Tory said he’d encourage builders complaining about Toronto’s traffic congestion to minimize disruption their own projects cause, suggesting he’d give them incentives to complete their work faster if it blocked a traffic lane, and assign them stiffer penalties if those lanes remained blocked.

The two candidates spent much time at the debate arguing unproductively about each others’ plans for funding a downtown relief subway line.

The Exhibition Place board of governors addressed the issue at its Wednesday, Sept.

10 meeting.

Sutton has been advocating since early spring to get the statues moved. She has already rallied the community and other sculptors around her cause. An online petition with more than 500 signatures requests the statues be moved, and she’s met with Ward 19 Councillor Mike Layton extensively for help.

At the meeting, Layton put forth a motion, which was unanimously agreed upon, for a working group to be created to include members of the E.B Cox family, exhibition and city staff. The board will look into where the sculptures can be moved by October.

Sutton requested the statues be moved indoors on the grounds before winter because the freezing and thawing will have damaging

effects on the sculptures.

However, the board’s chair, Dianne Young, said there is currently no room indoors.

There are a few “exciting locations” Sutton has in mind for the sculptures, which include Queen’s Park because it’s often frequented by families or gardens at the AllStream Centre, Bandshell Park or Ontario Place.

However, there could be a problem within the lease agreement with the nightclub that could prevent the statues from being moved entirely.

If the artwork was included as part of the land in the lease, it would allow the nightclub to have control over the art for the duration of its 20-year lease agreement that was signed in 2003 due to an “oversight” by the board.

If there are legal implications the board can’t get around, Sutton is willing to take the legal route and enforce an injunction on the art on the grounds of the moral rights of the artist, which is the artist’s right to

choose how his or her artwork is to be displayed and viewed.

This injunction would stop the nightclub from further damaging the art and could see it encased in plywood boxes if they can’t be moved.

According to Sutton, the city needs to rethink how they treat public art in the future because it could have damaging effects with relationships that haven’t even been built yet.

“It’s discouraging to any other artists who want to donate something to the city as public art. This has big future implications,” Sutton said.

Jeff Duns, who works for Ingram Gallery that has represented Cox’s estate for almost 30 years, also spoke of the aggressive cleaning and damage that’s been done to the statues since Muzik expanded its pool bar, stating it was a “Greek tragedy” what’s happened to them.

“Never, never do you clean the sculptures the way I’ve seen the sculptures cleaned on the patio.

“They have had all the patina scraped off of them,” said Duns, who added it would take decades to replenish the sculptures’ patina naturally.

Patina is a thin, usually green layer, that forms naturally on stone and metals when they are exposed to the air for a long time.

“If you walk around, there’s obviously quite a bit of damage to them. Fresh damage. In fact, one of the sculptures, Cyclops, has damage to his elbow...It’s very obvious that no care was taken in protecting this particular piece.”

Duns, who used to visit the sculptures with his family, was “mortified” when he initially found out it was fenced in.

“These pieces are part of the public realm and are for everyone to enjoy,” he said. “I feel like this is a bit nefarious to have it fenced off and us not knowing what’s going on, without any public consultation about this.”

The board plans to readdress the issue in the fall once the details of the lease agreement with Muzik are reviewed.

O v e r a l l , Su t t o n w a s “pleasantly surprised by the extensive motion,” but isn’t declaring victory just yet.

Muzik nightclub’s owner Zlatko Starkovski has not been in touch with the artist’s family about the issue.

He was also not present at the meeting and did not return The Villager’s request for comment.
