The more condos that go up around Stanley Park, in the Niagara neighbourhood, the more it gets used. And that makes it important, TrinitySpadina Councillor Mike Layton said, to keep the park as a good usable space that is well maintained and animated. Stanley Park is a unique city space that is cut through the centre by King Street west. The southern portion is programmed with baseball, tennis and the pool, while the northern portion is more geared to kids and green space for passive use. In addition to that, when the Fort York pedestrian bridge is installed from the Stanley Park extension in the north to Garrison Common in the south, slated for late in 2014, it will create another third section to this already large park, south of Wellington Street West. “It will be on a big incline, but it could provide seating opportunities, or some folks have suggested an orchard, which could be cool,” Layton said. “But there is opportunities there.” There has been a steady push to revitalize Stanley Park and improvements have been happening bit-by-bit during the past few years. Creative on Queen brings community to CAMH ERIN HATFIELD ehatfield@insidetoronto.com When Creative on Queen was started, the hope was to bring the Centre for Addiction and Mental Heath (CAMH) together with the community and give clients a platform to share their artistic talents.
Now, in its ninth year, the annual show and sale, held as a community partnership to the Queen West Art Crawl (QWAC), has become exactly what was hoped, said organizer Bharati Singh. Singh, who works in public affairs at CAMH, said Creative on Queen was started as a
means of complementing and participating in the annual QWAC, just down the street in Trinity Bellwoods Park. “We decided, we are part of this community, we wanted to break down stigma, we wanted to open our grounds to the community and host a community fair,” Singh said.
At the time, a lot of the galleries around CAMH were hosting events for the QWAC, and Singh said CAMH decided to do the same. “It was a way of welcoming the community onto our grounds because it wasn’t a welcoming environment before,” >>>CAMH, page 8
