FoodShare turns truck tagging into mural design contest LISA rAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com Because its delivery trucks have fallen prey to graffiti vandalism, FoodShare is on a mission to combat the issue in a positive way. The community food organization, whose headquarters are in the Bloor West and Dufferin streets-area, is seeking submissions from graffiti
artists for its ‘Leave Your Mark’ mural competition. The winning design will be painted on one of FoodShare’s delivery vehicles that regularly crisscross Toronto. “There are some amazing graffiti artists out there. We want to find someone who can create street art that goes with our values of food and community,” said spokesperson Rachel Van Slightenhorst.
“We hope it’ll deter future tagging.” FoodShare delivers healthy, affordable and fresh food and education to communities and schools throughout Toronto. With a variety of programs, FoodShare’s fleet of trucks are highly visible and are, in essence, moving billboards that share information about FoodShare with diverse neighbourhoods.
Graffiti artists are invited to submit designs for a three-panel mural that will be painted on a FoodShare truck. The top five designs submitted to the organization by the Aug. 4 deadline will be posted online and will then be publicly voted on. The winning design will be announced at a public event, Wednesday, Aug. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. at

The Bicycle Opera Project including Christopher Enns, left, Tristan Durie, Larissa Koniuk, Geoffrey Sirett, Stephanie Tritchew, Chelsea Shanoff and Wesley Shen brings Canadian contemporary opera by bicycle to communities across Ontario, where people might otherwise have little oportunity to experience it.
Opera company takes its show on the road - by bike Performances come to Toronto Aug. 7 to 10 LISA RAINFORD lrainford@insidetoronto.com It’s a gig unlike any other she’s ever had before. Saxophonist Chelsea Shanoff is in the midst of touring Ontario on two wheels as part of the Bicycle Opera Project. The Roncesvalles Village resident is one of seven singers and musicians who have embarked on an 800-kilometre trek, hauling their own instruments, props, costumes and sets in trailers attached to their bikes to bring contemporary Canadian opera to non-traditional venues across the province. This, the Bicycle Project’s third season, is billed as its most ambitious to date, featuring 20 performances throughout July and August. “It sounded like a fun way to spend the summer,” Shanoff told The Villager, earlier this month from one of her tour stops. The Bicycle Project is the firstever gig of its kind for Shanoff not only because she’s cycling to each venue, but because the saxophone rarely if ever accompanies opera singers. “It’s different than what I normally play,” she confessed. “I have to work hard not to overpower the singers.”
Shanoff says she’s welcomed the change of scene as well. “It’s nice to be out of the city, doing fitness and performing,” she said. While she is no stranger to cycling – Shanoff has done a lot of city cycling as a means of getting around, she said she has enjoyed riding her bike in the countryside. “You don’t have to worry about cars and there are no traffic lights,” she said. “There’s no ‘cars versus cyclists’ atmosphere.” Setting off from Kingston, July 4, the troupe cycled west, stopping in Prince Edward County, Belleville and the Westben Festival in Campbellford and Warkworth. The western leg of the tour features shows in Hamilton, Bayfield, London, the Stratford Summer Music Festival, Brantford, Guelph and Waterloo. The tour wraps up in Toronto with four dates in August (7 to 10) at the Evergreen Brickworks, on Toronto Island and at the Toronto Summer Music Festival. The Bicycle Opera Project was established by Larissa Koniuk and Nadia Channa in 2012. “We wanted to do a summer project that was satisfying and meaningful to us,” said soprano Koniuk, a former Roncesvalles Village resident, who now lives in the Bloor West and Bathurst streets-area. “I used to know some folk musicians who’d toured on their bicycles and custom made trailers for their instruments.” The Bicycle Opera Project aims to break down the barriers to opera, she said.
“People tend to think of opera as an elitist art form, conjuring images of corsets and bull-horn helmets,” Koniuk said. “We break these barriers by getting dirty on our bikes and spreading opera across Ontario in a style that is modern and relatable. Cycling also happens to be economically and environmentally friendly.” They’ve even incorporated the bikes into their performances. A backdrop of illustrations created by Bekky O’Neil is powered by a bike generator, Koniuk said. small, intimate venues The four singers and three musicians perform “very dramatic pieces to comedic” in small, intimate venues to give audiences the chance to get up close and personal. They’ve performed in everything from small cafés, bars and wineries and even a renovated barn. “It’s really fun to engage the audience. You can see their reactions right away,” the performer said. The group cycles an average of 60 to 70 kilometres a day and try not to perform on travel days. Other than the odd hilly terrain, the cycling is manageable, said Shanoff, who picked up the saxophone for the first time in junior high. “I didn’t want to play it at first, but ended up with it. It’s so versatile. You can make so many different sounds,” she said.

Collaboration is critical in last stages of Pan Am planning
Write us
T
he one-year countdown to the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games has begun. As of today’s editorial, we’re 344 days away from the Pan Am and 372 from the Parapan Am. There is little doubt this event will focus eyes on the Greater Toronto Area. The numbers are impressive: $1.14 billion budget; 7,600 athletes expected to attend; 49 Pan Am and 16 Parapan Am events; 15 upgraded sports facilities and 10 new world-class facilities. The figures alone set us up to host what will truly be a world-class sporting event. However, it’s also a chance for Toronto (and other municipalities involved in the Games) to really showcase what makes us so great. Toronto, for one, will be on display and we’re definitely ready for it. The city has communities from all 41 countries across Latin our view America, South America, the Caribbean and North America attending the Games. From the World-class Colombian community across St. sporting event Clair Avenue West, the Brazilians along Dundas Street West. and a year away Jamaican communities along Eglinton Avenue West, Toronto is the place to enjoy them all. With it, the Games bring development for Toronto via new athletic facilities in North York and Scarborough to the massive 35-acre Athletes’ Village in the West Don Lands that will be turned into a mixed-use community after the Games. But with all the accolades and excitement come some pretty important concerns, namely the impact on traffic, particularly in Toronto, which is already experiencing dramatic traffic issues. In a recent interview, the city’s director of transportation planning, Stephen Buckley, said it’s still unknown how much of an impact the Games will have on local traffic patterns. However, the Games will also see new transportation infrastructure built, including the UnionPearson Express air rail link, and improvements to Union Station. Shovels are in the ground, and athletes, coaches and spectators will be here in less than a year. It’s time for governments, communities, and Torontonians to get behind the Games in these last stages of planning. Before we know it, it’ll be showtime and we need to make sure we put our best collaborative effort forward to make the kind of impression we can all be proud of.

Will list of mayoral candidates shrink by Oct. 27?
I
don’t often find myself agreeing with my colleague Toronto Sun columnist Sue-Ann Levy—but I have to say that she asked the best question at Monday evening’s mayoral debate in East York. Taking on Rob Ford directly, Levy pointed out that with no supporters left on Toronto City Council, he had no hope of fulfilling the agenda he proposed. Why not, she wondered, at some point quit the race and throw support behind a candidate who could fulfill that agenda? Of course, Ford had no intention of doing any such thing and said so, making it clear that only Rob Ford could look after taxpayer dollars and if anybody should quit, it was those other candidates. Here in the middle of summer, no one’s going to say anything different. But whether anyone admits it or not, Levy’s question will weigh on the mind of at
david nickle the city least two other candidates between now and election Day Oct. 27. David Soknacki and Karen Stintz are two candidates who’ve put forward serious enough campaigns to put them on the A-list for mayoral debates. But at least so far as polls are going, neither has gained traction. still time That’s not to say they couldn’t. Stintz has spent the term building her reputation as a city councillor and TTC chair with a conservative bent. Soknacki has been out of politics for some time, but he’s put forward a strong centrist platform and of all the reasonable and staid alternatives to Ford, Soknacki is surely the most reasonable and staid.
There is in theory yet time for both of those candidates to capture the imagination of voters. In 2003, David Miller only started to gain momentum in the summer months before the election – and by the time of the vote, he was the people’s choice for the next mayor of Toronto. There is also time for a graceful exit – such as Sarah Thomson and Rocco Rossi both did four years ago, when it became clear to both of them that their earnestly begun campaigns were going nowhere. By the time that election rolled around, the election boiled down to a staring match between George Smitherman and Rob Ford, with only New Democrat candidate Joe Pantalone tagging along in a distant third place. Thomson threw her support behind Smitherman, and Rossi just stepped aside, to let his volunteers and funders
have a graceful exit themselves. So will it likely go this fall – and really, it’s too bad that it will. Because aside from Soknacki’s smart platform and Stintz’ bona fides, there are a number of different visions for Toronto that voters should take a look at. Toronto criminal lawyer Ari Goldkind is running a smart, lo-fi campaign himself, preaching the gospel of tax-what-youneed-to-spend as sensibly as Soknacki. But there is an inertia to celebrity, and that is why, barring some calamity, Ford will not likely heed Levy’s suggestion and throw in the towel until the last poll is closed Oct. 27 – while other candidates who might have a chance of running an effective council after that vote will step aside. Fall is around the corner and the return to school is on the minds of parents and kids alike. While many children are looking forward to getting back in touch with their friends after the long hot summer, there are those who may be experiencing feelings of anxiety and stress at the thought of homework and school books. For those children who are in the midst of changing schools or grades, or who have had academic or social difficulties in the past, the approach of Labour Day can trigger feelings of extreme anxiety and in some cases, depression. The Toronto Central Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) has a team of specialized Mental Health and Addiction Nurses who work in Toronto schools, supporting students, parents and staff who are in need of education, advice and consultation on mental health issues. Whether your younger child is returning to elementary school, or your teen is in the last year of high school, there are some general things that they can do to make the trip back to school less stressful. Following are some tips from Toronto Central CCAC about how to help children deal with the stress of returning to school: • Sleep – Sleep is one of the most important factors in a child’s mental health and well-being. Before Labour Day rolls around encourage your child to get a full night’s sleep so that she feels rested and ready to address the day. A minimum of eight hours is recommended for children and teens, who sometimes may require more. Start your
child’s sleeping schedule a couple of weeks before school starts so that they’re well prepared and well-rested for the first day back. • Talk – Does your child seem anxious? Has their behavior changed, are they acting out or withdrawing from you as the first day of school approaches? They may be experiencing stress related to school’s return and may not know how to articulate their anxiety to you. Open the lines of communication and start a discussion with them about returning to school. Ask them how they feel, what’s on their minds, and what some of their fears or concerns may be. By being available and acknowledging their feelings, you will be one step closer to helping them manage their return to school. • Eat – You are what you eat and so are our kids. A wellbalanced diet that is low in refined sugars and processed foods is the best bet for a child who may be prone to stress. Be sure to support your child in eating fresh fruits and vegetables as well as proteins that will allow them to feel both energized and healthier. A healthy
body will support a healthy mind and will, in many cases, reduce anxiety. • Think – Mindfulness is a skill that even the young can follow. In an age where attention spans are even more limited due to the constant distractions provided by technology, teaching a child to turn off the devices and to practice basic mindfulness techniques can greatly help those who are suffering from anxiety. • Do – Are you concerned that your child needs additional mental health support, beyond what you can provide? There are many options and resources available to you that can help to determine your child’s specific needs. Do some research and reach out for support – there’s help available to you. New home to lead to ‘a brighter future’ >>>from page 1 For the past several years, the family of 14 had shared a rental home with five bedrooms and only one bathroom without a living room because it was converted into a bedroom. Four of the children, under the age of 12, have been diagnosed with autism. Being part of a large family is not how it is portrayed in the movies, said eldest child, Julia, 17. “For six years, we lived in a house beyond repair. It was not a home, just a place to stay,” she said. “Then, one of my mom’s friends told her about Habitat for Humanity.” Since connecting with the organization, whose vision is “a world where everyone has a safe and a decent place to live,” Julia has helped on the job site and created a documentary chronicling her family’s journey to home ownership. “This house is more than walls and windows, it contains hopes and dreams of a

Ave. “This will be the second community in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) – and the only one we know of in Canada – that will have three sustainable technologies, geo-thermal heating and cooling power, solar and wind,” Stanton Renaissance president Louie Santaguida told an audience who had gathered at the Luso Canadian Charitable Society for a preliminary community consultation meeting, hosted by York SouthWeston Councillor Frances Nunziata. Stanton Renaissance’s proposal includes four buildings, 14-storeys fronting St. Clair Avenue, and two 12-storey and an eight-storey structure bounded by Mulock and Lloyd avenues and the CN and CP rail corridor comprised of 468 units and 493 parking spaces. An application to the city will be submitted shortly. Santaguida acknowledged heights are an issue and assured their shadow impact would be limited. All parking would be underground, said architect Andrew Gunn of the
firm McCallum Sather Architects. “The process for us has been challenging, but very exciting to breathe life back into this site,” said Gunn, adding the site will be walkable and bike-friendly. The architecture will be such that Lloyd and Mulock avenues will be separated from the rail corridor. “You’ll never see the trains going by,” Gunn said. There will be several access and exit points throughout the site to alleviate traffic on surrounding streets, he said. Area residents said they were impressed by the proposal and happy to learn that the site will be rejuvenated after so many years. When one community member inquired about the heights of the buildings and their relation to surrounding houses, city planner Luisa Galli assured that city staff would look at the transition to determine whether it is appropriate so there would be little impact on the existing neighbourhood.

Games’ impact on traffic difficult to predict: city transportation officials RAHUL GUPTA rgupta@insidetoronto.com
T
hough planning and infrastructure builds are well underway for the 2015 Toronto Pan Am / Parapan Am Games, the city’s transportation officials have outstanding questions as to how traffic will be managed during the event. The largest-ever multisport undertaking for the Toronto region, the Games are projected to cost $2.5 billion, of which the province has budgeted between $75 million to $90 million for transportation management, to ensure 7,700 athletes and coaches, plus some 1.4 million spectators get to their venues on time. Eight new Games venues are located in Toronto, including an athletes village, aquatics centre and an athletic stadium to be located at York University. The Pan Am coverage zone extends from north of Toronto south to St. Catharines. With a year to go, finalizing traffic concerns now would seem a welcome cushion for the province which has had to deal with more pressing issues such as venue construction delays and the removal of Ian Troop as Games CEO in 2013, replaced by Saad Rafi. In February, the province released a preliminary plan for managing Games traffic following almost two years of consultations between provincial and municipal agencies including the Ministry of Transportation

They will also be open for use by carpoolers, buses, emergency vehicles and accredited media. Enforcement will be largely on a volunteer basis. TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE The Games will also see the debut of transportation infrastructure such as the Union-Pearson Express air rail link. Infrastructure improvements at Union Station and on Queens Quay are also continuing. “For almost every venue we have road access, transit access, there’s a GO station or connection nearby,” said Teresa Marando, director of transportation planning for the Pan Am / Parapan Am Games. Marando, an MOT official, said the province had already consulted with municipalities about deferring maintenance work and halting the granting of construction permits during the Games to
-reduce congestion. “We want to be cognizant that it’s going to be busy and we need to co-ordinate our efforts to make sure we’re not doing something to make it more difficult for each other,” she said. When it comes to co-ordinating transit, the TTC and the city have to work together to deal with traffic issues such delivery trucks and illegally parked cars blocking busy streetcar routes, said TTC CEO Andy Byford. “It’s got to be a joint team effort with the city to once and for all create clear ways for our vehicles to get through, and that can only to be to the benefit of Toronto ultimately,” said Byford following last week’s TTC board meeting. The T TC is about to appoint a Pan Am Games co-ordinator who will “obsess about the detail” of its transportation planning, Byford said. “We still have a year to go,” he said. “The key for us is to get into the micro-detail of making sure THERE’S MORE! The City of Toronto and Toronto Community Housing are putting people first by working hard to repair social housing. Toronto City Council has approved a plan to secure an unprecedented $864-million investment over 10 years for capital repairs. This funding is being used to repair Toronto Community Housing’s rapidly aging buildings.
The City of Toronto also needs:
Despite these efforts, there is still a significant funding gap which must be filled – a gap the City and Toronto Community Housing cannot fill on their own.
• the federal government to stop withdrawing money from social and co-operative housing and instead reinvest that money back into capital repairs;
That’s why we have launched the Close the Housing Gap campaign. Its goal is to persuade the federal and provincial governments to each match Toronto’s investment of $864 million over 10 years.
• the federal and provincial governments to provide fully-funded, long-term housing strategies.
By doing so, Ottawa and Queen’s Park will help sustain a valued social asset that improves the lives of Torontonians.
• the provincial government to treat social housing providers fairly when paying social assistance rent rates, and
You can add your voice to this campaign by contacting your MPP and MP and tell them to Close the Housing Gap. Or holding campaign events in your community. Or distributing posters, petitions and buttons.
