The PALUSTRIS FESTIVAL, coordinated and promoted by the Arts Council of Moore County and the Convention & Visitors Bureau of Pinehurst, Southern Pines and Aberdeen area, should be an exceptional celebration of the performing, literary and visual arts in the Sandhills. The name for this first-ever community event has its roots in the Latin designation, Pinus palustris, of the longleaf pine tree, a conifer for which Moore County has become famous and with which the area has a unique connection. It is the hope of the organizers of the Festival that the more than 90 events in the four-day span of the Festival will transform Moore County into a destination known as much for the arts as for its golf courses, equine pursuits and natural beauty. The PALUSTRIS FESTIVAL showcases the artists, musicians, dancers, actors, poets and writers who live in Moore County, as well as those who have made an impression on the wider regional, state and national scene. You, the resident and visitor, can choose among the various happenings on the extensive program for the Festival. Included are art exhibits and demonstrations, theater and film productions, historical tours and lectures, special events, concerts and musical offerings by a variety of ensembles, solo performers and talented students. A family-friendly atmosphere encompasses the Festival with several presentations planned for and by students of the arts. More than half of the scheduled events are free of charge and open to the public. The ticketed events are all affordable with ticket prices ranging from $5 to $25. A three-fold set of objectives for the PALUSTRIS FESTIVAL has been established by its coordinators. The first is to attract substantial numbers of Moore County residents and visitors from across the state and beyond to enjoy the area’s outstanding quality of life. Second, the Festival is designed to support and boost the local economy, and the third objective is to broaden regional support of the community’s arts and cultural organizations, as well as other nonprofit groups. Overall, the purpose of these four days is to nurture a sense of pride in Moore County’s culture and history. A genuine welcome is extended to all those who join in the celebration of the first PALUSTRIS FESTIVAL!
