The first open house is from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday Dec. 1., at the Bryant House and McLendon Cabin, both on the same site on Mount Carmel Road near Carthage. The Bryant House was built in the 1820s. The cabin adjacent to it was built in the 1760s and is the oldest dwelling on its original site in Moore County. Refreshments, live Christmas music, demonstrations and tours are all offered by the volunteers. The next weekend, Friday through Sunday, Dec. 7, 8 and 9, from 1 to 4 p.m., there will be more open houses at the Shaw House, on the corner of Broad
Encore Presentation Of Ballet Planned The Shaw House Street and Morganton Road in Southern Pines. The Shaw House (circa 1821), the Garner House and Sanders Cabin are all on the same site and will be decorated with the era’s natural products and/or homemade items. GLENN M. SIDES/The Pilot
This competitor suited up as Santa and pushed her children in the Reindeer Fun Run last year.
The area’s most popular running event keeps getting bigger and keeps getting better. Aberdeen will once again host the Reindeer Fun for the second year and invites everyone to join the fun downtown after the race. The sixth annual Reindeer Fun Run will be Saturday, Dec. 1, and will include a 5k Run/Walk and 12k Run (for more serious competitors), the ever-popular Egg Nog Jog for kids 9 and under, a costume competition for race participants, and an after party held in downtown Aberdeen with lots of fun events for kids and adults. A Kids’ Zone will be open from 8 a.m. to noon. “This fun community event is for everyone from serious runners to recreational walkers, families and pets,” says Fun/Run organizers. The Reindeer Fun Run’s 5k curves through the historic downtown neighbor-

The Reindeer Fun Run is part of the Sandhills Race Series, which seeks to encourage and recognize participation and performance in local racing and provide support to organizations coordinating running events for the promotion of fun, fitness and community causes. The 2011 Reindeer Fun Run welcomed more than 2,200 runners and walkers from 25 different states The mission of the Reindeer Fun Run is to bring the community together to have fun and raise money for the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sandhills. One hundred percent of the proceeds go to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sandhills. This year’s goal is to top the $23,000 raised last year for this organization serving the needs of local kids and families. For more information, including start times and locations, visit www.reindeer funrun.com.
K2 Solutions Partners With Reindeer Fun Run For K2 Cans, Coats and Cash Drive Since Nov. 5, K2 Solutions Inc. has been holding its second annual K2 Cans, Coats and Cash Drive to benefit the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sandhills and the Moore County Coalition. Collection sites for this four-week drive include Panera Bread, Mellow Mushroom, Trident Marketing, Watch My Wag and Sport Clips. Any nonperishable food items and gently used or new coats are welcome and needed. The drive continues through Dec. 7. New to this year’s food drive is a partnership with the Reindeer Fun Run, which will be held Dec. 1 in Aberdeen, as they and K2 both work to support the Boys and Girls Clubs in the area. In addition to the four-week drive, K2 Solutions will also be collecting goods and cash on race day at the K2 booth to stock the Boys and Girls Clubs kitchens through the winter. Donated cash will go toward keeping the Aberdeen location open through the
summer months. In 2011, The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sandhills provided more than 26,000 meals and served more than 2,000 members in our community. Funding for these programs comes in large part from donations and fundraising efforts. The Reindeer Fun Run is the Clubs’ single largest fundraiser and has raised more than $77,000 in the last 5 years. The goal for the K2 Solutions and Reindeer Fun Run partnership in this year’s K2 Cans, Coats and Cash drive is to increase the cash donation and to provide enough goods for the season. It is a lofty but attainable goal with the community’s help. “The sixth annual Reindeer Fun Run is going to be bigger and better than ever,” says David Petsholt, chief marketing officer at Trident Marketing and rganizer of the Reindeer Fun Run. “There will be more fun, more surprises and more support for a very worthy charity. This
year, we are especially excited to be partnering with K2 Solutions to further our support of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Sandhills through the K2 Cans, Coats and Cash campaign.” As one of the largest employers in the area, K2 Solutions is committed to its mission of continued service, not just to the country at large, but to its own community here in the Sandhills. With outreach efforts such as the Special Operations Warrior Foundation golf tournament and events that support other veteran organizations, K2 is similarly dedicated to reaching its neighbors and friends with the K2 Cans, Coats, and Cash drive in partnership with the Reindeer Fun Run event. Those interested in participating are encouraged to drop off goods at any of the five participating businesses: Panera Bread, Mellow Mushroom, Trident Marketing, Watch My Wag and Sport Clips. Cash donations will also be
accepted at the K2 Booth on race day, Dec. 1.

Believe in the Magic of Weymouth Christmas House
“Believe in the Magic” is the theme of Weymouth’s Christmas House 2012, organized by the Women of Weymouth. This festive event just keeps getting better as the women showcase the nearly 100-year-old home of novelist James Boyd and his wife, Katharine. The Weymouth Christmas House is a showcase of local talent. Area garden clubs, floral designers and interior decorators creatively decorate the 23 rooms of the Boyd House using live greens, yards of ribbons, flowers and ornaments in unique and creative ways. In the Great Room, musicians of all variety entertain the guests with Christmas music and carols. Members of the Women of Weymouth bake hundreds of cookies to be served with beverages in the dining room. The festivities begin with the Gala, from 6 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 28. This cocktail-buffet features live music in the beautiful Great Room, and a sneak preview of the decorated house. Black tie is optional. Tickets are $50. The event opens to the public on
Thursday, Nov. 29, and runs through Saturday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. “We have found that in the evening under lamplight, the house takes on a different and wonderful atmosphere, and we wanted to share this with the community by offering Weymouth by Candlelight,” says Christmas House chair Jean Neil. The popular Candlelight Tour will be on Friday, Nov. 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. In addition to self-guided tours of the house, guests can enjoy wine, cheese and sweets while listening to piano music in the Great Room. Reservations are required for this event. Tickets to the Candlelight Tour are $30. During tour days, and at other appropriate times, the Great Room is where visitors can relax and enjoy live holiday music organized by Weymouth’s music committee chairwoman, Elaine Sills, and a host of volunteers. Annual Carthage Christmas Tour of Homes Dec. 2 The Carthage Historical Committee will host its annual Carthage Christmas Tour of Homes, Sunday, Dec 2. Seven Carthage homes and one historic building, all decorated for the holidays, will be featured on the tour, which is from 2 to 5 p.m. The committee’s suggested starting point is the Carthage Museum. Tickets for the tour are $10 and can be purchased prior to the tour at Fidelity Bank, Lisa’s Boutique and the Carthage Municipal Building, 4396 U.S. 15-501.
On the day of the tour, tickets may be purchased at the Carthage Museum, across from Fry and Prickett Funeral Home, and at the individual tour homes. The tour includes:
The Bettencourt Home, 407 McReynolds St. This house was built in 1880 for E. Waddell and was later added onto by his son-in-law, J.V. Larkin, a harness maker. It
was owned by an undertaker, J.M. Brown, in the 1920s and 1930s, and acquired by Greek restaurateur James Katsos in 1930. Outstanding features of the house are the wraparound porches both upstairs and downstairs. Today, the home is filled with antiques, artwork and vintage items collected over the years by the Bettencourts.
The Gerber Home, 703 McReynolds St. This house was originally built for a blacksmith, W.T. Jenkins, in 1870. Additions were made in 1910. In 1990, it was purchased by Shawna and Gary Smith, who restored it and ran it as the Blacksmith Inn bed and breakfast. The Smiths moved in 2010, and now rent the house. The Gerbers have made improvements themselves and filled the house with their collected antiques.

SOUNDS OF THE SEASO N CO NCERT
Aberdeen Parks and Recreation Department has partnered with the Moore Philharmonic Orchestra to present a special concert for the holiday season. The concert titles “Songs of the Season” will be presented on December 14, 2012 in the Aberdeen Recreation Station at Aberdeen Lake Park. Tickets are: $5.00 for Aberdeen Residents, $7.00 for non-residents. Tickets include admission to the concert, and gourmet desserts and coffee. Tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets may be purchased at the Aberdeen Parks & Recreation Department in the Aberdeen Recreation Station beginning on November 12th. For additional information, contact Leigh Baggs at 944-PARK (7275).
The Paschals purchased and renovated this house, built in 1928, in 2011. Recent renovations have added charm and functionality to the home while still maintaining the design and Craftsman style. It has four bedrooms and two full baths, living room, dining room, paneled family room, kitchen with breakfast nook and built-in pantry.
The Perkins Home, 814 McNeill St. The Perkins home is filled with an extensive collection of European antiques mixed with a country décor. During the holiday season, the house is decorated with treasured Christmas items the owner purchased from all over the world, along with items she made.
The Smith Home, 725 Niagara-Carthage Road This brick home, built in 1976 on 12 wooded acres, was purchased by the Smiths in 2010. They did extensive remodeling of several areas, put in new
flooring and painted throughout the house. This year, they have been landscaping and put in a storage building, chicken coop, fruit orchard, several gardens and a Boy Scout campground.
The Kenny Home, 375 T. Johnson Road The Kennys’ 2,400-square-foot, two-story farm-style house sits on 25 acres and overlooks a stocked pond in front. A picket fence and trellises enclose the front yard. Known for her Christmas decorations, the owner asks that visitors be sure to look under the multiple Christmas trees inside and out for hidden treasures that may remind them of days gone by.
The Wicker Home, 685 U.S. 15-501 This traditional Williamsburg home was built in 1997. It features hand-milled timber from the owners’ land used in crown moldings and baseboards throughout. A recently finished “cabin” room contains artifacts from the farm, leather furnishings and flooring, also of wood from their land. Other rooms are decorated in different periods, including Georgian and Queen Anne with antiques and eclectic pieces.
The Carthage Museum, 202 Rockingham St. This building was constructed in 1894, and was home to the Robert Burns family until 1914. It was located on property behind the building on the corner of Monroe and Rockingham streets. After building the home that is there now, Mr. Burns decided to move this house farther down the street to make more room for their new house. The old house (now the museum) was placed on logs and pulled by mules and horses to its present location on the corner of Rockingham and Saunders streets. In 1974, the Moore County Board of Education purchased the property and renovated it for use as a kindergarten. In 1997, it was given to the town of Carthage.
