Top 5 Home Design Trends for 2011

open floor plans, dual home offices, green details and outdoor living spaces.

What a difference a few years make, especially in the home building industry.

While the industry is recovering, savvy consumers know exactly what they want in a new home, more specifically a house plan. According to our builders, architects and designers, clients want to maximize usable

space and prefer smaller, better-designed homes with high-end, green features, rather than homes with lavish amenities and wasted space.

We have put together a list of five home designs trends that we believe you can expect to see in 2011 – smaller homes,

1. Small is the new big. A shift toward "smaller, better-designed homes" has been occurring for quite some time and homes ranging from 1,400-2,500 square feet are popular.

What makes these smaller designs so effective is that have flexible living spaces so your home can adapt to your changing lifestyle and needs. Common flexible spaces include rooms that can be combined to create in-law suites, home offices (even his and hers), music/media rooms, craft or hobby rooms, dens that can become guest rooms and dining

rooms that can become offices.

2.

Open floor plans are still in. Open and flexible designs where the kitchen opens up into the dining room and family room has become very vogue in the last decade and is especially trendy with home builders who enjoy entertaining guests at home.

The economy has also impacted this trend, since instead of going out for expensive dinners, homeowners are inviting friends and family over, creating a demand for living spaces that support that kind of entertaining.

3. Dual home of-

fices. Thanks to two-income families, there has been a rise in demand for extra office space. Many new home plans feature more than one flexible office space. In many cases there are several workstations (laundry room, master suite, kitchen area, great room) to accommodate the busy lifestyle of working mothers and teenagers.

4. Interest in green products. Interest in affordable, ecofriendly home details is increasing.

Some of the features include concrete counter tops, tankless water heaters, recycling bins built into

kitchen cabinets.

Equally important is energy-efficiency and the interest in alternative home insulation techniques.

5. Extending the indoors outside.

There's a big interest in making full use of all their living space, including outdoor areas. That means outdoor living enhancements such as fire pits and kitchens are allowing home buyers to enjoy as much of their property as possible, for a much longer time.

Hot home security trends: mobile command, smart integration, video monitoring

(ARA) - Homeowners who installed early home security systems often wound up thinking they would have been better off simply installing sturdy locks on their doors and calling it a day. The technology was laborintensive to install, offered keypads that looked as complicated as an airplane cockpit, and did nothing for you if the homeowner forgot to set the alarm before leaving the house.

Fast forward to 2011, and today's technology has helped make home security systems easier to use, more effective and flexible to fit our modern, mobile lifestyles. And statistics indicate homeowners have ample reason to consider installing a security system.

Nearly 1.4 million homes were burglarized in 2009, accounting for 72 percent of total burglaries, according to FBI statistics. The average loss per burglary was more than $2,000, and that figure doesn't take into account the emotional trauma of having your home invaded and possessions taken.

"Considering the average loss from burglary and house fires, monitored security systems have always been a worthwhile investment," says Jonathan Klinger, vice president of marketing for Honeywell Security.

"Now the option to add remote system control and video look-in from Web browsers and Smartphones, enable everyone to play a more active role in the protection of their home and family."

If you're considering purchasing a home security system, it's helpful to know trends in terms of available technology and how others are using it to

protect their homes and families: Smart integration Once, homeowners used separate systems to manage security and fire detection.

Modern systems, however, integrate these functions. What's more, many security systems now integrate easily into home automation systems, which means that homeowners can control multiple elements in their homes in addition to ensuring the home is safe. They can arm their security systems and turn on the lights, control the thermostat and open garage doors - all remotely - through one integrated system.

More than keeping the bad guys out In the early days of home security, the focus was on keeping the bad guys out of your home. While that's still an important function of home security systems, today's technology makes it possible to use the system to keep track of and care for the loved ones still inside your home. For example, Total Connect by Honeywell allows you to view the inside of your home from virtually any Internet-enabled device, using up to six wireless cameras that can tilt, pan and provide nearly a nearly 360-degree view.

Mobile command Use of handheld mobile devices has boomed in America over the past few years. People use smart phones, laptops and a variety of wireless devices to keep in touch with friends and family, communicate regarding business matters, monitor world events, track weather and even plan a route home from work when there's an accident along the usual course.

As one of the fastest-growing segments of the housing market, first-time homebuyers are driving the demand for smaller, less expensive new homes.

Between 2007 and 2009, 41 percent of the 8.4 million Americans who purchased a home were first-time buyers. The typical first-time homeowner was 34 years old and had a household income of $67,000.

They purchased homes with an average market value of about $184,000, compared to $297,000 for trade-up buyers.

The large majority of first-timers purchased single-family detached homes that averaged 1,874 square feet — well below the 2,549 square foot

home chosen by repeat homeowners.

Close to half of them (46 percent) bought homes smaller than 1,500 square feet.

On average, firsttime buyers looked at 15 properties before making a final decision. While 63 percent used saving for their downpayment, 22 percent made no downpayment at all.

Although some of the growth among first-time homeowners has been fueled by the government’s tax credit, this upward trend should continue as the children of

Baby Boomers form their own households over the next decade.
