MOORE COUNTY HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 23, 2011 By John Pandich Moore County Home Builders Association President
The "Home Team" of Subcontractors
The days when individuals build houses by themselves have long since passed. Building a house is now a team effort. General contractors hire skilled subcontractors who specialize in the various phases of construction. Part of the job of the general contractor is to develop a
schedule for building a house so that each subcontractor specialist is there to perform each given task at the right time. Who are some of the players? First, someone has to excavate the lot, digging a hole for the foundation. Next, a subcontractor has to pour the footings, on
which the house will rest. A subcontractor will then place the foundation on top of the footings. Once the foundation is in place, a new group of subcontractors comes to the site. Someone has to frame the house, which is the skeleton that provides the support for the interior and exterior walls, the flooring and the roof. A siding contractor is needed to install the exterior siding material. A roofing subcontractor needs to apply the shingles or other roofing material. Someone needs to install the windows and doors to finish closing up the house. When the house is closed up, there is still a lot of interior work to be done. A electrical subcontractor needs to install all
of the necessary wiring. A plumbing sub-
contractor installs the pipes for the water system. And a specialist needs to install the heating, air conditioning and ventilation (HVAC) system. As houses have become larger and more complex, many of these trades require a greater level of expertise than in bygone generations. The house is now ready for the finishing touches. Once the plumbing, electrical and HVAC work is installed, a subcontractor comes in to install insulation. Another must hang the interior walls and ceilings. These then have to be painted by another sub. The cabinets and appli-
ances for the kitchen need to be installed. The flooring and carpeting need to be laid. Once again, these tasks must be scheduled in the correct order. Subcontractors also work on the outside of the house. Someone must grade and landscape the property. Houses with driveways and decks may have still other subcontractors who come to the site. As houses have become larger and filled with more features and options for people's comfort, house construction has become more specialized. Nonetheless, more than one of these tasks may be performed by a par-
ticular subcontractor. The general contractor may also perform some of the tasks. This large team of different tradespeople who participate in the construction of new homes is good news for local economies. All of these subcontractors are earning wages, paying taxes, and spending money in their communities. The money is spread out rather than concentrated and can create an economic ripple effect. That's a good reason to want to see new houses built in your community and to support your local "home team." For more information, contact the Moore County Home Builders Association at 910-944-2992 or visit www.mchba.com.

(ARA) - Each year, 420 home fires occur during the holiday season, claiming the lives of 21 people and injuring 43, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Protection 1, the nation's second-largest security provider, is offering 12 tips for a safer holiday to help reduce the chance of becoming a holiday fire casualty: 1. Maintain your holiday lights - Inspect holiday lights each year for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in the insulation, broken or cracked sockets and excessive kinking or wear before putting them up. Use only lighting approved by a verified testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories. 2. Don't overload electrical outlets - Do not link more than three light strands, unless the directions indicate it is safe, or you can risk putting too much strain on the power source. For additional protection, connect strings of lights to an extension cord before plugging the cord into the outlet. Make sure to periodically check the wires - they should not be warm to the touch. 3. Water that tree Christmas trees account for 250 fires annually, resulting in 14 deaths, 26 injuries and more than $13.8 million in property damage according to the U.S. Fire Association. Typically, tree fires are started by shorts in electrical lights or open flames from candles, lighters or matches. Dry and neglected trees can increase your risk, while well-watered trees help to reduce the chance of any issues. 4. Avoid using lit candles - Open flames create many opportunities for harm
THE PILOT — SOUTHERN PINES, N.C.
particularly when kids and pets are in the house. However, if you do use them, make sure they are in stable holders and place them where they cannot be easily knocked down. Never leave the house with candles burning and never go near a Christmas tree with an open flame from candles, lighters or matches. 5. Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short period, turn off the stove. 6. Keep your mitts off - Keep anything that can catch fire potholders, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, towels or curtains - away from your stovetop. 7. Watch the oven In case of an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the oven door closed to prevent flames from burning you or your clothing. 8. Use turkey fryers outdoors, a safe distance from buildings and any other combustible materials. 9. Use only nonflammable decorations and ensure they are placed away from heat vents. If you are using a metallic or artificial tree, make sure
it is flame retardant. 10. Quickly discard gift wrap and packaging from your opened gifts as wrapping paper is very flammable. Never burn gift wrap in the fireplace or wood stove. It can ignite suddenly and cause a flash fire. 11. Throw it out Never put tree branches in a fireplace or wood-burning stove as these items may ignite quickly, starting flash fires. When the tree becomes dry, discard it promptly by taking it to a recycling center or having it hauled away by a community pick-up service. 12. Have working smoke alarms installed on every level of your home, test them monthly and keep them clean and equipped with fresh batteries at all times. Or, consider installing a monitored alarm system like those provided by Protection 1. The company can alert authorities automatically of smoke or carbon monoxide dangers - even if you're away from home. No matter how you celebrate, following these 12 tips to a safer holiday can help ensure you, as well as your friends and family, enjoy a safe, joyful holiday season.

(ARA) - For some homeowners, remodeling projects are regular occurrences to keep their homes looking fresh. Sometimes, that means smaller changes like a new coat of paint or changing a light fixture. Other times, more substantial changes are needed. Determining those changes can be a challenge, but looking at the potential return on investment is a great way to prioritize. Bathroom remodeling offers a 68.7 percent return on investment, according to a National Association of Realtors survey. One way to add value to a bathroom remodel is to pick bathroom fixtures that are more efficient than what you currently have installed. Americans are going green in many areas of life, whether with more energy-efficient light bulbs, hybrid cars or by recycling more regularly. Bathroom fixtures are no different. Here are three reasons why you should consider going green with your bathroom modeling project: * Products may be outdated. Toilets made before 1994 use anywhere from 3.5 gallons to 8 gallons per flush (gpf), while new EPA WaterSense labeled high-efficiency toilets can work beautifully on a modest 1.28 gpf. Not sure of your toilet's vintage?
Look at the underside of the tank lid - the date of manufacture is often stamped into the porcelain. In the shower, the typical showerhead installed in California homes built after 1994 uses as much as 2.5 gallons per minute. At that rate, your eightminute shower consumes a whopping 20 gallons of water. * Savings to be had. Compared to 3.5 gpf toilets, TOTO's Aquia One-Piece Dual Flush High-Efficiency Toilet has a flushing system that enables homeowners to select the level of water used each time the toilet is flushed - 1.6 gallons for bulk waste or .9 for liquid. The approach provides exceptional water savings paired with outstanding performance. A family of four can save more than $90 annually on their water bill, and $2,000 over the lifetime of the toilet. If you replace a typical 2.5 gpm showerhead with a TOTO high-efficiency Trilogy Showerhead, you will experience the same luxurious shower, yet consume a responsi-
ble 14 gallons, saving 20 percent of the water used by older models. Even something like a faucet can contribute to water savings. TOTO's Silas Widespread Lavatory Faucet is a WaterSense labeled lavatory faucet that consumes a responsible 1.5 gallons per minute without sacrificing an ounce of performance. Its design has a classic contemporary elegance with a graceful, curved spout. * Be a trendy homeowner. A whopping 68 percent of builders surveyed by the National Association of Home Builders say that energy-saving technologies and features including low-E windows, energy-efficient appliances, and LED lighting will be common along with other green features like engineered wood products, and watersaving plumbing fixtures such as dual-flush toilets and low-flow faucets by 2015. Start now and you'll be ahead of the curve.

Ring in 2012 with renewed home decor
(ARA) - New Year's is a time when many people commit to starting fresh or developing some positive changes in their lives. As you consider what you will change in 2012, think about where you spend the majority of your time. Your surroundings can greatly influence your mood and actions, and a refreshed interior can help you step forward into a new and improved lifestyle. Enjoying life more in 2012 could start with just a few simple updates to your home. Color Home decor trends are constantly evolving, and one of the most obvious aspects of changing style is color. An easy, costeffective way to instantly modernize your home is to update your walls to a posh hue. Try a shade from Pratt & Lambert's 2012 Color Trends palette, which features a broad range of colors to fit any style. After tracing the development of today's styles back to their origins, the brand's Color + Design team

released the 2012 trends forecast. Titled "Trace," this forecast features five palettes: Essence, Instinctive, Enough, Echo and Expressive. From shimmering ethereal shades, to rich earth tones, to bright vibrant hues, Pratt & Lambert's 2012 Trends provide the hottest color options to update every room in the home. Use these colors as inspiration for other decorating elements as well to create a cohesive, modern atmosphere. Accents Whether your taste is classic and elegant, natural and rustic, or clean and modern, accessories have a huge impact on the feel of any room. Mirrors, wall hangings, table art, pillows and floral arrangements are just some examples of accents that can completely change the look and feel of a space. Don't be afraid to combine materials and styles, either. An ornate brass mirror can work well to complement the clean lines of a modern end table or the intricate fabric of
an antique footstool. Avoid clutter as you add visual accessories by using baskets, chests and other storage pieces to conceal magazines, books and other common items. Rearrange Replacing your current furniture may not be in your budget, but don't underestimate the effect rearranging your current pieces can have on your space. Simply changing the layout of a room costs nothing and can have a dramatic impact on the functionality and atmosphere of your home. Place larger furniture pieces against the wall to open up floor space and avoid blocking walking paths. Or, you might arrange your sofa or elongated pieces of furniture at an angle in the corner of the room to give the illusion of a longer wall and also instantly create hidden storage opportunities. This update is as temporary as you want it to be, so don't be afraid to try something new. You might even rearrange every few
months to keep things fresh throughout the year. Lighting To instantly give your space a new look, consider changing the lighting. Whether it's a large hanging fixture, wall sconces, standing lamps or recessed can lights, adjusting your current lighting will have a significant effect on the ambience of any room. A mixture of light sources works best for most spaces, and a visit to a local lighting store will confirm the options are endless. While many lights will serve functional purposes, others may serve as pure decoration to highlight an aspect of the room, such as a piece of artwork. And, like furniture, remember that

simply adjusting the locations of table and floor lamps can have a dramatic impact your room's feel. Bring your home into the new year in style and update your
color, accents, layout and lighting to start fresh in 2012. By focusing on a few key areas, you can enjoy an improved living space easily and affordably.
