What is an energy efficient window?

An energy-efficient window needs to at least have doublepane insulated glass,

heat-resistant (Low-E) glass coating, airtight frames and an ENERGY STAR® rating.

Here are some key components to an energy-efficient window: Frames: One of the important considerations you need to make is frame material. Two of the more energy efficient frame materials are vinyl and fiberglass. They do a particularly good job of reducing heat transfer and contributing to insulation value.

Your ultimate decision on which of these to use may be based on aesthetics and cost. In making your selection, be sure to look for vinyl or fiberglass

frames that have been specifically engineered for performance.

For instance, both can be designed with chambers within the frame that enhance strength, noise reduction and insulation value.

Multiple Panes: Dual-pane designs use an air- or gasfilled space between two panes of glass.

This insulates better than a single pane.

According to a recent survey conducted by the National Association of Realtors® (NAR), a substantial majority of both owners and renters agree that homeownership is a smart decision over the long term.

Even in today’s challenging economy, NAR’s study found that 95 percent of homeowners and 72 percent of renters believe it makes more sense to own a home. In addition, 93 percent of homeowners are happy with their decision to purchase a home and would buy again.

The survey uncovered a few differences between homeowners and renters as well. While more than half of owners are “very” or “extremely” satisfied with the overall qual-

ity of their family life, only one-third of renters share that attitude. Similarily, 43 percent of homeowners are very/extremely satisfied with their communities, compared with 30 percent of renters.

Of course, some homeowners didn’t fare well during the housing market’s downswing because they “bought high” and had to “sell low.”

But even with several years of price declines, the typical owner who purchased a home eight years ago has gained $33,000 in equity — a 24 percent increase — while those

who bought their homes 11 to 15 years ago have seen a median gain of 40 percent.
