Preserve, Protect, Defend are usually the terms that you expect from our local police departments. However, there is another law enforcement (and creation) agency that we need to Preserve, Protect, and Defend the Mortgage Interest Deduction (MID). We call them Congress. Many years ago, Congress determined that the best way to preserve the American Dream of Home Ownership was to institute the MID. At the outset of the greatest recession in our nation’s modern history, both the President of the United States and Congress said we must deal with the housing debacle to get the economy going again.

It is an historical fact that the housing industry has led the recovery from each of the previous recessions since World War II. At this point, our elected leaders have undergirded the banks and the auto industry; but, have not done the same for

housing. As they now seek ways to reduce the gigantic debt that our nation has incurred, there will be the typical attempts to solve a large part of the problem on the backs of homeownership by eliminating or significantly reducing the Mortgage Interest Deduction.

The simplest way for Congress to show certainty to the housing market is to preserve the MID and oppose legislation that would

undermine it.

Please show your support of stable housing policy by contacting Congressional Representatives to co-sponsor House Resolution 25, a bipartisan resolution offered by Rep. Gary Miller. Realtors believe that wide co-sponsorship of this resolution will send a strong signal that Congress remains committed to a housing recovery.

Since merely ignoring your duties is not an option, experts say you can at least save time by modifying your habits so you can work more efficiently.

Laundry If you're like most folks, you probably consider laundry to be one of the most timeconsuming household chores - 66 percent of adults said doing laundry is a major time drain in a nationwide poll conducted for LG Electronics. MOORE COUNTY HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION

The only people who benefit when a house is built are the family members who get to live there, and the builder who constructed and sold the home, right?

Wrong. The positive impact of new resi-

dential construction is far-reaching, bringing benefits to families, businesses and services throughout a community immediately, as well as for years to come.

According to economists at the National

Association of Home Builders, the one-year estimated local impacts of building 100 single-family homes in a typical metro area include $21.1 million in local income, $2.2 million in taxes and other local government revenue, and 324 local jobs.

But what does that economic impact mean in the real, dayto-day lives of community residents?

Just think about it.

When a family moves to a community and buys a new house, they will likely shop at local stores to buy furniture and accessories to decorate the home. They will fill their car’s gas tank at local gas stations so they can get to the stores, have local mechanics work on the car when it breaks down or needs the oil changed, or buy a

new car at a local dealer when it’s time to replace the old one.

The family may need to hire local companies for regular services to maintain their home, such as landscaping, house cleaning, pet sitters or pool upkeep.

The children will enroll in local schools.

This increases enrollment, meaning more teachers, janitors, cafeteria workers and other school support staff will need to be hired. Those kids will also join sports leagues and other activities, buy equipment and pay registration fees that provide stipends for referees and coaches.

All of this economic activity puts income into the pockets of

local business owners and their families, who can then afford to go out and spend money themselves, which recycles even more money into the community’s economy.

The new family also pays local and state taxes. These tax revenues help pay for a wide range of government services, including school teachers, police departments, refuse collection, parks maintenance and road repairs.

Over the long term, as the families who move into new homes become part of the community, their positive impact continues. NAHB estimates that those 100 new homes also provide the community with

additional, annuallyrecurring impacts of $3.1 million in local income, $743,000 in taxes and other revenue for local governments, and 53 local jobs.

Families who buy a newly built home enjoy benefits including safety, amenities, energy efficiency and floor plans to fit a modern lifestyle. But the advantages of new homes extend far beyond the buyers and the builders—residential construction has a positive, direct impact on the local community for years.

Cool ways to curb air conditioning costs this summer

(ARA) - Cooling a home during the summer with a window air conditioning unit can account for nearly 50 percent of an average homeowner's utility bill. And in the hottest regions of the country, cooling off with central air can generate up to 70 percent of your home's utility bill.

But not to fear: There are several ways to curb your electricity use this summer. One simple way is to turn up the thermostat by one degree during warm weather. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that you can save up to 3 percent on your summer energy bill for every degree you raise your thermostat for 24 hours. Set your thermostat between 72 and 78 degrees. Each degree setting below 78 will increase your electricity use by as much as 4 percent and that's sure to add up to several hundred dollars over many hot summer days.

Other ways to reduce your home's cooling costs include making sure your air conditioning unit is running at peak performance, replacing the HVAC filter at least every three months or as needed, turning on ceiling fans and making sure they are blowing down (not up), opening windows during cooler evening hours, closing curtains and blinds where sunlight radiates heat into the home and sealing all air leaks that let cool air escape outside.
