Spring Cleaning Safety
As the weather begins to warm and thoughts turn to open windows and time spent outdoors, many families undertake the time-honored ritual of spring cleaning. It can involve anything from clearing winter’s de-
bris from your lawn to major renovations, but it is important to remember to work safely during all of your spring cleaning activities. There are some simple steps you can take to ensure that you are
protecting yourself, your family, and the environment. Ladders can be hazardous when not used properly. In many cases, accidents and injuries occur while using ladders because they are improperly placed, not secured, not the right size for the job or the user overreaches. When working with ladders always remember to: Read and follow all warning labels that are on the ladder Use ladders only on solid, stable and level surfaces Keep your body centered on the ladder; never let your belly button pass either side rail Never stand on the top two rungs of a
step ladder Only use a step ladder in a fully opened and locked position; never use it while it is closed, partially opened or leaning on a structure Protect yourself from electrical hazards and do not work within 10 feet of overhead power lines Spring cleaning often involves moving heavy objects such as couches, tables, entertainment consoles and bookcases—a situation where a serious injury can occur. In order to eliminate the risk of objects falling and to lift items safely, always have another person help you.
By John Pandich Moore County Home Builders Association President
More tips for lifting heavy objects include: Get close to the load Maintain an upright posture from the waist up Lift with your legs, not your arms or back Pivot on your feet, don’t twist from your waist Using chemicals during cleaning can post a hazard to not only yourself, but also the environment. Read the labels of all chemicals you are using and follow all the recommended safety practices. These may include: wearing protective gear such as gloves and goggles, not mixing the sub-
stance with other cleaners, opening windows for ventilation, and following proper disposal guidelines. Finally, before you use any tools or equipment while cleaning up your yard, make sure you have maintained them in proper working condition and in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Have your lawnmower serviced yearly, never remove guards or safety devices, and wear appropriate eye, body and hearing protection. For more information on home maintenance, contact the Moore County Home Builders Association at (910)944-2992.

(ARA) - Getting out on a nice day and giving your lawn a fresh cut can be a peaceful and rewarding experience. But when mowing your lawn begins to cut into your free time, it becomes less of a joy and more of a chore. The good news is there are ways to decrease the time you spend mowing. By purchasing the right mower for your yard and using certain landscaping techniques to make mowing faster and easier, you'll spend less time mowing and more time enjoying your freshly cut lawn. Choosing the right mower If it takes you much more than an hour to mow your lawn, purchasing a riding lawn mower is probably the best way to cut down that time. However, not all riding lawn mowers are created equal when it comes to the speed of mowing. Zero-turn mowers, long the preferred mowers for professionals, are now becoming more widely available, affordable and more userfriendly, making them a sensible purchase for homeowners looking for a quick and precise mow. Here are a few reasons why zero-turn mowers can get the job done faster than a traditional lawn tractor: • More responsive steering that uses
levers as opposed to a steering wheel allows you to maneuver more easily around trees, flower beds and other obstacles. • Zero-turn mowers can cut at nearly twice the speed of traditional lawn tractors, offering the ability to move at 5 to 8 mph, as opposed to 3 to 4 mph. • Zero-turn mowers allow you the ability to spin around 180 degrees when you get to the end of your yard, eliminating the need to back up and cut strips of lawn you might miss using a tractor with a steering wheel. • By design, zeroturn mowers offer an unobstructed view of the cutting deck, making it easier to see when trimming edges - eliminating the need to touch up the areas you might have otherwise missed. For more information on how zero-turn mowers work, visit www.whyzeroturn.com. Mowing and landscape techniques How you mow and the way you design

your yard can also play a role in reducing the time you spend mowing. Here are a few techniques you can use to save time: • Plant a garden or landscape using woodchips or other materials around trees and near buildings and curbs. This will eliminate the need to mow many hard-totrim areas. • Leave clippings on the lawn rather than raking them up. As long as you mow regularly, leaving the clippings on your lawn will actually encourage healthier growth, providing your lawn with much-needed nutrients. • Keep your mower blades sharp so that they cut cleanly. This will keep your grass healthier and will help you mow more effectively. By choosing the right mower for your yard and employing a few tried-and-true, time-saving techniques, you'll be well on your way to maintaining your lush green lawn without spending any extra time doing so.

Martha Gentry, cobroker owner of Re/Max Prime Properties and team leader of Martha Gentry’s Home Selling Team joined a group of civic leaders from Moore and Cumberland Counties on a Community Relations Tour of San Antonio, TX hosted by 440th Airlift Wing. The purpose of the tour was to provide a “behind the scenes” look at the technologies, aircraft and Airmen, courtesy of the Department of the Air Force. Col. Merle Hart, Commander, 440th Airlift Wing accompanied the group. The group arrived at Pope Field 95th Squadron Operation at 7 AM on April 20
and boarded a C-130 for a flight to the 433rd Airlift Wing, Lackland AFB, TX. After arriving, the group was met by Col. Kenneth Lewis, 433rd Airlift Wing Commander and toured the C-5 Formal Training Unit. They were also given the opportunity to visit the massive C-5 airplanes which everyone agreed was an incredible privilege! The group spent the night on San Antonio’s famous River Walk at the Emily Morgan Hotel and was treated to an evening reception by the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce. The next day included a visit to Fort Sam Houston and a trip to the Cen-
ter for Intrepid, Brooke Army Medical Center. The Intrepid was a truly incredible experience. The advances in medical rehabilitation available for troops wounded in battle is inspiring! After lunch, the group boarded the C1-30 for the trip back to Pope Field. “It was a great experience — tons of fun!” says Gentry. “I learned a lot and met some truly impressive folks both with the group and at all the venues we visited. I think all of us came away from this trip with an enhanced understanding and appreciation for the outstanding achievements of our military men and women.”
(ARA) - Cool drinks. Barbecues. Relaxing. They're all the makings of the perfect summer evening when enjoying time with family and friends. It's the season when everyone is looking for ways to spend time outside and with a little ingenuity, a bit of a green thumb and a knack for do-it-yourself projects, the backyard can easily become an outdoor oasis. Here are some summer project tips: Deck prep: Many homes have a patio or deck. A fresh sweep, followed by a hosedown of the area will clear off any debris from the patio. A coat of fresh stain on a deck will liven up the whole space. Garden ready: Make sure garden beds are free of overgrowth and weeds. If they're looking a little sparse, consider enhancing the area with lowmaintenance perennials. Add pops of color with annual flowers such as impatiens, geraniums and marigolds. For additional adornments, plant annual flowers in pots of different shapes and sizes that can be clustered on
the corner of the patio or deck. Climb high: If you enjoy climbing flowers like clematis or climbing snapdragons, it's simple to build a free standing garden obelisk to create a colorful focal point. Simplify construction and save time by using a SKIL Compound Miter Saw. Finish the garden with fresh mulch to help control weeds and keep the ground moist. Outdoor living: Cooking with outdoor grills can help keep the heat out of the kitchen. An outdoor fire pit serves as an inviting centerpiece to the area, allowing
everyone to enjoy cooler summer evenings. Relax and enjoy: Finally, create seating areas where family and friends can relax. The classic Adirondack chair is the perfect option for additional seating. Why not take it a step further and create a cozy seat for two, including a table and a place for an umbrella to shade the area? The only needed tools to build a double Adirondack chair are a SKIL jigsaw, circular saw and drill. The step-by-step instructions on SKIL's website will show you how to build each chair, the center table and assemble all of the pieces to create the seat. You'll have a new outdoor seating area that is custom for your backyard oasis. With a little work around the backyard, you'll have a comfortable and cozy living space that can be used during warm summer months. For more do-it-yourself projects and tips for every season, visit www.skiltools.com.

Red Day
PAGE D7
Red Day is the day that Keller Williams agents all over the country take the day to give back to the community. Each office chooses a place to volunteer for the day, and this year Keller Williams Pinehurst chose to work with the Sandhills Coalition for Human Care. The group washed windows in three buildings, planted flowers and weeded gardens, trimmed hedges, unloaded a truck load of soup, spread pinestraw and power washed a building. It was a great day of work, fun, fellowship and accomplishment. Barrett Walker, Dir. of the Coalition, stated that this was a hard working group of people. "We appreciate the work so much and are proud of our clean buildings surrounded by flowers! Thank you Keller Williams and Red Day, and thank you to the Jim Leach State Farm Agency and AES Lending for providing lunch for the volunteers!"
