MOORE COUNTY HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION
FRIDAY, JULY 1, 2011 By John Pandich Moore County Home Builders Association President
Americans Still See Homeownership as a Top Priority
Americans still consider owning a home essential to the American Dream, and Washington policymakers would be wise to keep this in mind in the coming election season. Proof of this statement is evident in a May 2011 poll conducted on behalf of the National Association of Home Builders by Public Opinion Strategies of Alexandria, Va., and Lake Research Partners of
Washington, D.C. The national poll reached two thousand likely voters and asked them about their attitudes regarding homeownership and housing policy. The results could not be clearer. Despite the ups and downs of the housing market—and whether or not they currently own home— voters overwhelmingly indicated that they place a high value on homeownership as a core
achievement in their lives. Of the poll respondents who are current home owners, nearly all of them—95 percent—said they are happy with their decision to own a home and believe that owning their own home is important. Almost three-quarters of respondents who do not now own a home said it is a goal of theirs to eventually buy one. Equally telling, voters rated the importance of homeownership just as highly as the importance of being successful at their job or being able to pay for a family member’s education. “The bottom line is, even after years of economic turmoil and an unprecedented and prolonged downturn in the housing market, homeownership is still a central
goal f-r most Americans,” said Meredith Sledz, Executive Officer of the Moore County Home Builders Association. “It’s an undeniably deep emotional attachment that can’t be ignored by the politicians who are looking to address budget issues by cutting housing incentives in the tax code such as the mortgage interest deduction.” Americans also feel strongly about the financial benefits—and challenges—of homeownership. Poll respondents said they considered owning a home their best investment, more than their retirement savings program or stock market investments. And 75 percent said that owning
a home is worth facing the potential ups and downs of the housing market.) Meanwhile, nonowners identified saving enough money for a down payment and closing costs as the number one barrier keeping them from homeownership, more than job uncertainty or concerns that the value of their home may drop below the purchase price. Yet exceedingly stringent mortgage lending requirements could make that barrier even tougher for the typical American family to overcome in the future. For example, according to estimates by both NAHB and the Center for Responsible Lending, it
would take more than 12 years for a typical family to save enough money for a 20 percent down payment on a median-priced single-family home. “Lawmakers need to put themselves in the shoes of the average American, and see that excessive down payment requirements and a reduction in housing tax incentives will keep homeownership out of reach for most firsttime home buyers and many middle-class households,” said Sledz. “This would be a fatal blow to the American Dream for many, many families.” To learn more about homeownership and housing policy in Moore County, contact the Moore County Home Builders Association at (910)9442992 or visit our website at www.mchba.com.

The key to an easy move is careful planning. There are many action items that need to be taken prior to the move all the way up to the actual day the first box is loaded on the moving truck. Take time to write down and organize the decisions and activities that will need to be accomplished prior to the move such as securing a mover and changing your address. Ideally, you should try to break up the tasks over a twomonth period. By doing so, you won’t overload your schedule, plus it can save you time and money. To get you started, consider using the checklist below as a guide. Eight Weeks Prior Get estimates from at least three professional movers. If you are going to do it yourself, get estimates on rental trucks. Decide which furniture and household goods you’ll be taking, which needs to be disposed and which needs to be replaced. If you will be moving to a new city, contact the Chamber of Commerce of that town for a new residence packet. Your sales professional may also have information. Six Weeks Prior Inventory your possessions besides furniture – kitchenware, decorative items, electronics, apparel and so on.
PAGE D5
Complete a change of address form with the post office. Make sure you notify organizations, credit cards companies, and publications to which you subscribe of your new address, too. Obtain copies of all medical, dental, legal, accounting and veterinarian records. If children are changing schools, arrange for transfer of educational records. Itemize moving-related costs with the mover including packing, loading, special charges and insurance. Four Weeks Prior Make arrangements for packing your belongings. If you will be using professionals, schedule with the company for packing to take place a day or two before the move. If you will handle packing on your own, purchase adequate boxes, packing materials and tape. Arrange for shortterm or long-term storage if needed. Make travel arrangements for pets including necessary medical records, immunizations, medication and so on. Three Weeks Prior Begin packing items you won’t need immediately or that will go into storage. Contact utilities on both ends of the move to order termination or turn-on for occupancy date. Confirm travel arrangements for family and pets.
Two Weeks Prior Terminate newspaper and other delivery services. If necessary, arrange and confirm new bank accounts and local services in your new neighborhood. One Week Prior Gather important papers, records, and valuables for protected shipment to new home or safe deposit box. Obtain any prescription medications needed for the next few weeks. Day Before or Actual Moving Day Defrost refrigerator/freezer and give away all perishable food. Keep a box marked “Last Box Packed/First Box Unpacked” for tools, flashlights, first aid kit and so on. On moving day, this should be the last box placed on the truck. Pack items to carry with you such as valuables, financial records, personal papers and so on. Give the movers a telephone number and address to reach you. To be sure, a detailed action plan can get your move well down the road before you ever depart to your new destination.

Easy improvements give homes a dramatic facelift

THE PILOT —
(ARA) - Home improvement projects don't need to be difficult, and with the right tools and attitude, they can be exciting as you watch your house transform. Summer is the perfect time to look at your home to-do list and get going. Here are some easy ideas you can get started on today. Outdoors: siding, deck and doors make a house stand out. Painting the home exterior, sheds, fences or decks can be a challenging task. However, doing a good job now will make your entire home look great for years to come. To ensure a good result, begin by removing dirt and other items such as leaves from the surface to be painted. Look for areas where paint is chipped or bubbled and remove with a wire brush or wideblade putty knife. Using an electric sander can also be helpful. When painting, use tools that are made specifically to help ease and expedite the process. The Wagner Power Painters featuring EZ Tilt helps tackle a variety of projects like painting a house, shed or fence and produces quality results. The paint sprayer applies a professional grade paint application. Any way you look at exterior painting, you can't beat the coverage, speed and finish you get by spraying. While you already have all your painting supplies out, grab a brush and update small details like the front door and trim. On a beautiful sunny day, painting your house can be a joy. Throw a painting party and invite your friends over to help out. After the project is done, eat a nice dinner together to show your appreciation. Now for the rest of the year you have a beautiful house to enjoy, inside and out. Indoors: look at walls, ceilings and fur-

niture. The first step is to take a look at the inside of your home and analyze which rooms need a facelift. Look at the walls for chipped or dirty paint and the ceiling for stains. Painting is an easy and cheap way to brighten your house fast. When choosing paint colors, it's best to look at the furniture and other pieces in the home and try to coordinate appropriately. When in doubt, light colors work best and always brighten a room. If you are feeling daring, think about trying one of the deep and beautiful colors that are popular right now in the color palettes at many paint companies. Fill in holes and nicks with putty. Sand and prime those areas before painting. Priming helps ensure a professional looking paint job that lasts longer so it is worth your time. After walls have been primed, it's time to apply paint. Rollers are the preferred tool for many people because they apply an even coat and hold a lot of paint. If you are painting the ceiling, you will need a roller with an extended handle to reach the high areas and help relieve arm tension. One roller that really saves you time when painting is Wagner's TurboRoll battery powered roller. The TurboRoll holds paint in the handle and eas-

ily reaches 8-foot ceilings. One fill of the tube can paint an area 10 feet by 7 feet in size. It also has "Power Trigger" technology that allows the user to supply paint directly to the roller by squeezing a trigger so that they don't have to make repeated trips to the paint tray to load up with paint. This saves time and gets the job done fast with an excellent finish. After the paint has dried, looking at the floors is the next step. Hard flooring needs to get washed and carpets should be cleaned. Renting a carpet cleaner from your local hardware store is very economical and provides a deep clean. Get the whole family to help out and make cleaning a fun activity you all participate in. A quick clean and perhaps reorganization of furniture, and you just gave your home an easy facelift for little cost and not a lot of time. Home improvement and painting your house can be a joy. You can also take pride in the fact that you did it yourself. And better yet - you saved money. After the project is done, invite your friends over to showcase your great accomplishment. Now for the rest of the year you have a beautiful house to enjoy, inside and out. For more information visit www.WagnerSprayTech.com.
(ARA) - Of course you love your pets, but let's face it: Sometimes they smell. And whether you are hosting guests or trying to sell your home, the last thing you want visitors to remember is an offensive odor. Luckily, there are a number of ways to eliminate those lessthan-pleasant pet odors and let your home's personality shine. Refreshing walls Paint is one of the most dramatic and cost-effective ways to give your home's interior a new look, and now it can also give your home a new fresh scent. Dutch Boy's Refresh paint features odor-eliminating technology from Arm & Hammer. It reduces odors caused by pets and other sources, keeping your home smelling as good as it looks. Proven to reduce household smells, a coat of Refresh paint will prevent bad odors from lingering for months. By trapping and neutralizing odor molecules, this paint doesn't cover up unappealing smells, but actually reduces them. And Refresh paint is available in Dutch Boy's broad range of colors, so you can reduce unpleasant smells without compromising
your decorating taste. Clean with steam Even if your pet isn't allowed on the furniture, your home furnishing fabrics are holding onto unpleasant scents. Though you may vacuum regularly, animal hair and dander are trapped in the fibers of your cushions, curtains, sofa and other decor. Using a steam cleaner is the best way to eliminate bad smells in upholstered furniture and other items that cannot be laundered. Hire a professional service to treat the common areas in your home, or purchase a steam cleaner specifically designed for pet hair removal. Deep-clean common area fabrics several times each year, and to help maintain a fresh smell day to day, use an odor-neutralizing fabric spray regularly. Hit the floor The biggest source of your home's objectionable smell could be right under your feet. As anyone who has house-trained a pet knows, they don't always get it right, and sometimes those accidents go unnoticed and cause stains to inevitably set in. To remove odors of any age, scrub bare floors with white vinegar and water or an odor-neutralizing cleaner, and
thoroughly wash carpets and rugs using an odor-neutralizing shampoo. You can also hire a professional to clean the carpets and provide extra deodorizing treatments. If stains or smells remain, you'll likely need to replace the carpet and padding. If this is the case, be sure to scrub the floor beneath before laying new carpet down. After the carpet has been thoroughly cleaned or replaced, regularly use carpet deodorizer formulated for pet odors when vacuuming. Scented accessories Tie a ribbon on your odor-free home with strategically placed candles and air fresheners. Choose classic scents that complement your decor, and use a variety throughout the home to avoid an overpowering result. Many candles and fresheners offer odor-neutralizing technology as well as pleasant scents, ensuring unfavorable smells are not only covered up but eliminated. Jars of potpourri or scented crystals add touches of personality to any room decor as well. No matter what types or the number of pets that share your home, these tips will help keep it smelling fresh all year round.
