MOORE COUNTY HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION
Home Owners: Help Keep Local Waterways Healthy
There’s no question that everybody wants healthy streams, creeks and green spaces in their community for their family to enjoy safely. Stormwater management — keeping excess runoff from rain and snow and the contaminants that they carry from polluting local water sources — is essential to maintain the health and well being of native fish and wildlife, as well as the quality of water that your family uses every day. Home builders install silt fences and dig retention ponds to control stormwater runoff during construction. But once a community is completed, the way it is maintained makes a big difference to the health of nearby waterways. Consider the following ways that you can help keep your com-
munity clean and healthy for the enjoyment of many generations to come. Fertilizing When it rains, lawns that are over-fertilized can wash pesticides and herbicides into the storm drains on your street, eventually carrying it to the local water source — possibly the source of your drinking water. According to the Center for Watershed Protection, more than 50 percent of lawn owners fertilize their lawns, but only 10 to 20 percent of those home owners actually perform a soil test to determine the fertilization needs of the lawn. Before you buy your first bag, take time to do the soil test — you may find that you don’t even need to fertilize.
If you do need to fertilize your lawn: Keep it on the grass, use it sparingly, and consider using organic products Hold off if there is a chance of a rain storm shortly after applying it to your lawn When you mow, don’t bag the grass. The clippings will naturally fertilize your lawn. But sweep those fertilizer-rich clippings off the sidewalk and roadway so they don’t go down the storm drain. Trees Planting a tree is a great way to help keep polluted stormwater from reaching storm drains. The roots help rain water filter back into the soil, cutting down on excess runoff. As an added benefit, trees can help cut
summer cooling costs by providing shade to the home, and in many cases they help the increase the value of your home. Gardens Plants that are native to your region require less water and nutrients to survive and are more resistant to pests and disease — therefore less fertilization is required. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas at Austin has a searchable database to help get you started — visit www.wildflower.org/explore to see what flowers, trees and shrubs work best in your community. Rain Barrels Rain barrels collect stormwater runoff from a home’s roof via the rain gutters. They hold the water temporarily, cutting down on the amount of water that reaches the sewer sys-

tem. The water can then be used to water lawns and gardens. Purchase your rain barrel at a local home and garden store or build it yourself — step-by-step instructions are available on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) website, www.epa.gov. These are just a few suggestions to help get you started on the road to a cleaner and healthier community. Get involved in your local watershed organi-
zation to find out how you can make a difference. Visit www.epa.gov and searching for “surf your watershed.” For more information on stormwater management and other environmental initiatives, contact The Moore County Home Builder Association at www.mchba.com or visit the National Association of Home Builders at www.nahb.org.

Home improvement projects made easier by technology
FRIDAY, AUGUST 20, 2010
(ARA) - Home remodeling projects can become overwhelming to even the most experienced DIYers. Thanks to new technology and online resources, these projects don't have to be so daunting. With online sites and tools to keep homeowners on track, complicated projects are simpler than ever. By doing the proper research and using these new resources, homeowners will find that technology can make home improvement projects faster, and more painless and precise. Virtual design tools While some homeowners have a natural instinct and vision for how they want their home to look, others need a little guidance. With seemingly limitless options, a homeowner could come up with literally millions of color and style combinations. The tools to narrow in on the perfect elements are crucial. It's simple to pick out different pieces and materials for a home, but making sure everything fits together for a cohesive style is the most important part of home decorating. For those not blessed with the designer gene, many popular home publi-

cations and home improvement companies offer online resources with tools that provide both inspiration and a realistic visualization for those planning the design of their home. Lumber Liquidators, the largest specialty retailer of hardwood flooring in the United States, recently created the "Room Designer" on its website, LumberLiquidators.co m, for homeowners to view different varieties of floors within a number of different types of rooms and setups. Users can swap out the flooring, change the cabinet and wall colors, save their designed rooms and even e-mail the combination to themselves or friends. The site also allows visitors to view before and after pictures from actual customers in order to get ideas for their own homes. Ultimately, homeowners must feel comfortable in their homes and the decor and tone should really fit their personalities and lifestyles. Planning made mobile Many people find themselves with limited time, and planning a home improvement project ends up at the end of a very long to-do list. For these homeown-
ers, mobile applications are ideal to make progress - while waiting for the bus or during their lunch break - even if they don't have time to sit down and plan a home improvement project. Mobile applications can also save DIYers a little cash as they don't have to spend money on expensive tools. Apps can be a remodeler's best friend as they'll do everything from turning a phone into a level, converting measurement units, serving as a flashlight or identifying the cheapest retailer to buy tools. The "Floor Finder" even tells homeowners the amount of flooring needed to fill a room. Homeowners can download the "Floor Finder" for free at the Apple iTunes store. Besides doing everything but physically completing the project, technology can be a huge help in the home improvement process. Homeowners should take advantages of ways to make their lives - and projects - easier. These useful tools and more can be found within the productivity and utility sections of your preferred app store. Courtesy of ARAcontent

Four Budget-Friendly Home Updates
By Victoria Spannaus Wells Fargo Home Mortgage
As the experts at HGTV’s web magazine FrontDoor.com remind us, the secret to successful pre-sale home remodeling is perspective. While your home should stand out from the crowd, it should also “fit in.” Does every other house on the block have laminate countertops? Splurge on granite and you probably won’t get your money back at resale. If you need to spiff up your home before selling but want to keep an eye on the budget, focus on FrontDoor’s top four fixes: 1. Paint Your Way to Profits: Paint is one of the cheapest ways to get the highest possible price for your property. White is great for baseboards and trim, but opt for warm, neutral colors on the walls. 2. Find Value Underfoot: If there are hardwood floors
“I will provide an outstanding mortgage experience from application to closing”
under the carpet, rip up the rug and refinish the floors. But do hire a pro. A lessthan-perfect finish will stick out like a sore thumb. If carpet is your only option, beef up the look of midpriced carpeting with top-end padding. 3. Fine-Tune the Front Yard: Since prospective buyers will form an opinion of your home before they ever step through the door, make sure their first impression is one that says “wow.” Banish the toys and yard ornaments, trim the shrubs, paint the front door, and add colorful potted flowers. 4. Lighten Up the Landscape: Replace those dated-looking florescent lights and
brass chandeliers with brushed nickel or oiled bronze fixtures. But don’t forget the exterior. Affordable solar lights are east to install and can add tons of pizazz to a walkway, deck, or garden. (ARA) - It's amazing what we can do to our homes today to make them more energy efficient, from green roofs to geothermal heating. While some new homes are built with green in mind, you can also make your existing home more environmentally friendly while also saving some cash. Whether you are looking to conserve energy or save money, reviewing the EnergyGuide label on appliances and looking for the ENERGY STAR label on appliances, electronics and other energy-using products is a great way to identify the most energy-efficient products on the market. By making a few adjustments in your home energy use, such as choosing ENERGY STAR qualified products, you can save on your utilities bills and make a positive impact on the environment as well. "From switching your light bulbs to your appliances, there are many ways to reduce your energy consumption," says Ty Pennington, the host of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and spokesperson for the Sears Big Switch program, which aims to help families make the switch to 5 million ENERGY STAR qualified appliances. The Big Switch will help educate even more Americans about ENERGY STAR and encourage them to make the switch to more energy-efficient appliances and electronics. You can find out more about the Sears Big Switch initiative, take the ENERGY STAR Pledge, view videos and learn more ways to be green at www.SearsBigSwitch.com. Here are a few tips from Pennington on how to conserve energy in your home: * Switch out your incandescent light bulbs for compact florescent light (CFL) bulbs, which use 75 percent less energy and last about 10

times longer than incandescent bulbs. An ENERGY STAR qualified CFL bulb will save about $40 over its lifetime and comes with a two-year warranty. Also, you can use motion-sensor lights in outdoor areas so that you aren't leaving lights on overnight. * Consider buying energy-efficient, ENERGY STAR qualified appliances, electronics, heating and cooling equipment and more. In fact, by switching out non-ENERGY STAR appliances that are more than 10 years old for the following ENERGY STAR qualified counterparts - refrigerator, dishwasher, clothes washer, room air conditioner and water heater - you could save more than $2,500 over five years. * Remove and recycle your old, inefficient appliances. Every year, Americans throw away 9 million refrigerators. Collectively, that's more than a billion pounds of metal, glass and plastic, as well as more than 18 million pounds of harmful toxins like CFCs, CPBs, mercury and oil. As the first retail member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Responsible Appliance Disposal (RAD) program, Sears will remove and recycle inefficient refrigerators and freezers and take them off the energy grid for good. In fact, by removing 5 million inefficient appliances that are at least 10 years old and replacing them with ENERGY STAR qualified models, Americans could see savings that are equivalent to taking more than 600,000 cars off the road. * Unplug electronics you aren't using. Many electronics products for your home are consuming energy even when they are not on. Using a power strip can make this easier. If you are considering buying a new electronic, such as a TV, DVD player, computer or any home theater
or office product, think about buying ENERGY STAR qualified models. According to the EPA, TVs that carry the ENERGY STAR label are about 40 percent more efficient than conventional models. In fact, if all televisions sold in the United States met the new ENERGY STAR requirements, Americans would save $2.5 billion annually in energy costs while reducing annual greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the emissions from about 3 million cars. * Be smart about your home climate. Depending on where you live, replacing your old heating and cooling equipment with equipment that has earned the ENERGY STAR label can cut your annual energy bill by more than $200. Lowering the heat or turning off air conditioners and fans when you are gone can also help keep your energy use down. You can learn more about HVAC equipment by visiting searshomepro.com for additional details. * Consider conducting an energy audit on your home. During an audit, a professional comes into your home and makes suggestions about things you can do to make your home more efficient. It may be as simple as sealing a few holes, which could end up saving you big bucks in the long run. According to the EPA, in a typical house with forced-air heating and cooling systems, about 20 percent of the air that moves through the duct system is lost due to leaks and poorly sealed connections. To learn more about the environmentally friendly changes you can make in your home, take the Sears ENERGY STAR Pledge and register for a chance to win a suite of ENERGY STAR qualified appliances, visit SearsBigSwich.com.
