MOORE COUNTY HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION

Moore Green Building Council

Coming soon to a home near you: an affordable, sustainable, efficient, green home, with third party engineer performance certification testing, with a national certification to prove its green pedigree… That’s because the Moore County Home Builders Association has formed the “Moore Green Council” that is now part of the National Association of Home Builders’ NAHB National Green Building Program. The council joins the 120 local and regional green building programs whose members have produced more than 115,000 green homes since 1997 have united under the banner of NAHBGreen. The real question is: What meaningful advantages are offered to home buyers by a green home? In the past few years one

can barely open a newspaper or magazine without reading about the “greening” of just about everything including products that, on the face, appear to be the very opposite of green: cleaning products, SUV’s, trucks, and perhaps most ironic big oil company advertising… There seems to be a great deal of fluff and even more hype surrounding the “green” marketplace and frankly it’s hard to know exactly what you are getting what the real green advantages of a given product are these days. NAHB Certified Green Professionals (CGP’s) know that a green home is more than just a house with extra insulation or high-tech windows —

and yet being green doesn’t mean the home has to be a new age yurt or a geodesic dome. A home can be considered green when energy efficiency, water and resource conservation, the use of sustainable or recycled products, and indoor environmental quality considerations are incorporated into the process of home building a traditional home. The increased availability of education for builders, growing consumer awareness and the exploding market for affordable, sustainable, and recycled building products has accelerated green building’s acceptance rate and move into the mainstream, all at a very affordable cost. The NAHB National

Green Building Program is being fueled by this growing acceptance and is based on the success of local programs that have been certifying and verifying “authentically green” homes for years. NAHBGreen is transforming the market by allowing home builders to provide homes that are as green as home buyers want and as energy- and resource-efficient as is economically feasible. There is a NAHBGreen Web site — www.nahbgreen.org — with features for builders and home buyers. Builders can use the site to design the home they want to build and what green features they want to incorporate. An online scorecard then keeps track of the home’s growing “greenness” and can add and subtract features to keep

that cost-effective and customer-preference balance. Local third party verifiers, trained and accredited by the NAHB Research Center, inspect the home during construction and after completion to confirm the scorecard and give the home a Bronze, Silver Gold, or Emerald rating. Home buyers can go to www.nahbgreen.org

for educational resources. You can also contact the Moore County Home Builders Association to find a Certified Green Professional — a local builder or contractors with certified green training from the NAHB. One-stop green shopping with local flexibility: that’s the new NAHB National Green Building Program.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the size of newly constructed singlefamily homes has been declining over the past couple of years. After increasing continually for almost three decades, a typical single-family home peaked at 2,521 square feet in 2007. Today the average new home totals 2,498 square feet, nearly 100 square feet smaller. A similar decrease in housing sizes that occurred during the early 1980s recession proved to be temporary. This more recent trend, however, is expected to affect the new home market for an extended period of time because of several factors: • An increasing number of first-time buyers who understand the advantages of owning vs. renting.

“I will provide an outstanding mortgage experience from application to closing”

• A multitude of Baby-Boomers looking to downsize from their larger home into easier maintenance properties. • Homebuyers of every age who want to minimize energy costs. Most often, builders and buyers are now opting to save space by reducing the number of bedrooms or bathrooms. And perhaps due to the influence of aging Baby Boomers, the share of one-story ranch homes has increased dramatically since 2006. While this recent census data only addressed new construction, it also points to an overall

trend in housing. Smaller houses — once thought to be more challenging to sell — are becoming the preferred choice for many of the nation’s homebuyers. Answers to five common questions about the water in your home THE PILOT — SOUTHERN PINES, N.C.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2010

(ARA) - Do you take clean water for granted? As one of the basic necessities of life, you are constantly consuming water. Whether you are drinking it, cleaning with it or using it in your home appliances, the quality of your water affects your life. However, a recent Kenmore and Sears consumer survey on water treatment highlights the need for additional education on the water we consume, as not all Americans understand the differences and benefits of treated versus untreated water. In fact, the survey reveals that 85 percent of respondents are aware they could be drinking more contaminants in their unfiltered tap water compared to the treated alternative; however, they don't currently have an in-home water filtration system. Does this mean you are too trusting when it comes to the quality of water in your home? The survey further reveals that 61 percent of homeowners and renters said they believe the water in their home is clean enough to drink without installing a water treatment system. Although, more than 57 percent admitted that if the water in their home had a strange taste or an odd color, they would consider installing a water system. There are some common questions that people have about water consumption and water treatment, and some things you should know about how a water treatment system can improve the quality of the water you use. 1. How do impurities get into your water? Treatment methods vary by region, as does water quality. Public water must adhere to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) minimum standards. However, impurities and other contaminants, such as lead, bacteria and even traces of prescription drugs can enter into your

water as it makes its way through city pipes and ultimately into your drinking glass. According to the survey conducted by Kenmore and Sears, a shocking and overwhelming majority of Americans, more than 75 percent, are unaware of the potential dangers that may be lurking in their pipes. Nevertheless, there are, in fact, a number of contaminants and pollutants that can be found in your running water. While local water companies are required by the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974 to monitor the quality of their water and report annually to customers based on health standards for contaminants established by the EPA, why not take preventative measures by installing an in-home water treatment system? 2. Why is having soft water important? Hard water can cause many undesired affects in a home. Scale can build up in your pipes, which can reduce water flow and increase the maintenance on your plumbing and faucets. Hardness minerals can also build-up on sinks and bathtubs, as well as leave spots on dishes and glassware. This is why making the switch from hard water to soft water can be important in the home, as a water softener can help with these common household issues. In addition, bathing or showering with soft water is usually gentler on your skin and makes it easier for you to rinse off soap or shampoo. As a result, another benefit of having a water softener is that you can use less of these products, which may help decrease the amount of soaps and detergents that are used. 3. If water is softened, does that mean it's clean? While water softeners bring significant benefits to water quality, it might be wise to also install a filtration system to help eliminate additional impurities

from drinking water. Filtration systems can be installed under the kitchen sink or installed on the main water line to service the whole home. 4. How is your water softened, if it is softened? Some city municipalities treat water to soften it, but for those that don't, an in-home water softener may prove beneficial. If you are unsure whether your water is treated before it enters your home, contact the city or agency providing your water. If you get your water from a well, a home system may be needed for treatment. 5. How does bottled water differ from in-home filtered tap water? Producers of bottled water use many of the same techniques as municipalities or in-home filtration systems. A Kenmore reverse osmosis system will reduce impurities significantly. By drinking water from an in-home water filtration system instead of more expensive spring or distilled bottled water, you can potentially save money over time, as well as help reduce the amount of waste from left over plastic water bottles that you may

have otherwise purchased. As a way to assist with water quality at home, Kenmore offers a line of home water treatment systems to help remove many of the most common contaminants found in water. Water softeners remove the hardness minerals in the water, and drinking water systems, such as Kenmore Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Systems or the Kenmore Elite (R) Advanced TwoStage Drinking Water Filter provide treated water for cooking and drinking. With a drinking water system, you can enjoy filtered water at the sink, which improves the quality of drinking water by helping remove contaminants. Additionally, the Kenmore Elite Central Water Whole Home Filtration System provides a central, fullhome solution to get rid of chlorine taste and odor in water.

(ARA) - For most people, the start of cooling temperatures in the back half of the year means more time spent at home. Take advantage of the time you're spending at home by making sure you're not using any more energy than you need to. Fortunately, there are many options to cutting down on energy use and with the tax credits expiring at the end of 2010, now is the time to take action. One way to take action is to go solar. By installing solar panels, you protect yourself against future energy rate increases and add value to your home. In fact, The Appraisal Journal states that in the United States, a home's value increases about $20 for every $1 decrease in energy costs. Therefore, if solar panels decrease your energy bills by $1,000 a year, they could potentially increase your home's value by about $20,000. Understanding solar systems need not be daunting. Here are the ABC's to get you on the path to saving money and lowering your energy bill: About solar power Solar power systems turn sunlight into electricity that is connected to your existing home electrical system - as well as the electric grid. It may surprise you to know that even on cloudy days, solar systems can generate electricity. Optimum electrical production occurs with bright and sunny weather conditions, but solar panels also work on cold, cloudy days because they work on light,

not heat. On sunny days, you not only benefit from using electricity directly from your solar system, but you may be able to send electricity back to your provider, building credits that offset your nighttime electric use. At night, your home draws on utility company power. Through building up credits for solar electricity, solar electricity saves you money through either replacing the most expensive rates of utility electricity, or through racking up solar electricity credits in the day when electricity rates are highest using utility electricity at night when it's cheaper. In short, you sell high and buy low. As a bonus, those credits roll over monthly. This means if you generate excess power during the summer and use more power during the winter, you will first use up any credits before paying for additional electricity. Some states let you even sell back the excess power. Always keep in mind the shade around your home when installing solar panels. Look for a reputable installer who can work with you on designing rooftop installations to avoid structural shading so you can get a quicker return on your investment. Benefits without disruption All solar power panels are not created equal. Westinghouse Solar offers innovative solar power systems that feature built-in technology that delivers safe AC power and provides consumers with what they are looking for most: high performance

and reliability. "We have always used award-winning technology in our patented panels and are proud of their continued superior performance and dependability," says Barry Cinnamon, CEO of Westinghouse Solar. "Our panels are sleek and attractive. Most importantly, they come with the trusted backing and quality of a name synonymous with reliability." Solar panels require little upkeep, which means you get the benefits of solar without disrupting your everyday life. The only maintenance they may require is a semiannual washing, accomplished by simply hosing them down. Some solar system manufacturers also offer computerbased real-time monitoring systems that allow you to track the performance of your system from any Web browser.

Cost savings Solar energy savings can be a smart investment and cut your electricity bill by 75 percent or even completely. With electricity rates increasing an average of 6 percent a year nationwide, your bill stays low and your savings rack up. Government programs can also offset up to 50 percent of a system through a variety of tax credits and rebates. With immediate savings and tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars of savings over the next 25 years, solar electricity is one of the most cost-effective ways to save money, cut down pollution and still fit the way you live today. Local Agent Provides Free Information Resource to Moore County Homeowners Facing Financial Hardships New Web site presents options for homeowners confronted with the possibility of foreclosure

Southern Pines, NC – Local real estate agent and community advocate, Lucretia Pinnock of Pinnock Real Estate & Relocation Services, Inc. today announced the creation of a new information Web site for Moore County area homeowners in distress. www.LucretiaHelps.com contains vital facts about the options available to these homeowners, to help them make the educated decisions about their future. “I developed this site with my community in mind,” Pinnock said. “When faced with the possibility of foreclosure, I’ve seen too many homeowners make poor choices, even walking away from their homes without calling

their lender or a real estate agent. These people didn’t know the options available, or even how to find any information on their situation. “I want more for the people of Moore County and more comes with making informed decisions.” www.LucretiaHelps.com acts as a hub for information on the facts and issues for struggling homeowners, putting all the necessary information in one, easy-to-use location. The information and materials located on the site are regularly updated to reflect market changes, trends, new lender requirements, and industry updates. Alex Charfen, cofounder and CEO of the Distressed Property Institute in Austin, Texas, said that more than seven out of 10 homeowners in foreclosure proceed without any visible assistance. “Agents with the Certified Distressed Property Expert® designation are helping distressed homeowners understand that there may be options
