Always, always, always do cake tastings!

Look around at different styles and designs, and have an idea of how you want your cake to look before you meet with your baker to nail down a design.

A cake can look beautiful and still taste horrible. Taste each baker’s cake prior to placing a deposit!

Have two or three ideas available to discuss, and see what his or her opinion is on the best style and design for your guest count.

Be aware of food allergies.

Know how many guests are planning to attend.

Choose the shape of each tier next, or decide upon a design from step two.

Do you or your future hubby have a food allergy of some sort? Be sure to tell your baker about any allergies or dietary restrictions you may have before going further.

Once you have your guest count, your baker can tell you how many tiers your cake should have. If you want to save the top tier, you may need an additional or larger tier.

Your baker may provide multiple options for tier shapes if you would like to build a custom look, or you can begin discussing what you love about the designs you found.

Choose your cake flavors, fillings, and icing! Keep in mind that your baker may suggest using fondant for certain cake designs or outdoor weddings. This could change how much your cake costs as well as the way your cake tastes, so be aware of this before moving forward. Once that is settled, choose which flavor, filling, and icing combo is just perfect for you!

Rachel Crabtree & Matthew Mucciolo 11.17.12 Love Story: Matt and I first met while studying abroad in Spain during a summer abroad program through the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in the summer of 2006. After graduating from UT, he moved back to California while I finished up with school. Once I graduated, I moved out to California for an internship and then moved back to Tennessee. After lots of flights back and forth, he eventually settled in Chattanooga! You might say he fell in love with the South! He proposed to me on Thanksgiving Day, 2011 in front of our entire families while visiting in Hermosa Beach, California. His family also does a “themed Thanksgiving,” and that year was 80’s. Long story short, he proposed while wearing 80’s work out gear while I was wearing an 80’s prom dress borrowed from my aunt. Of course I said “yes” and it’s history from there! The pics are hilarious by the way. wedding Details: From the very beginning of the wedding planning stages, I knew the photography would be a key element as I wanted to capture every moment and have lasting memories of our special day. Bamber Photography was the best pick as he and his wife followed our wedding journey from the engagement photo shoot at my family farm, to the professional bridal portrait shoot at the Hunter Art Museum, to the rehearsal dinner at the Lookout Mountain Golf and Country Club, and of course, from the early hours at the Church to the late evening in the Ballroom on our Big Day! Our pictures are priceless and we colud not have made a better choice! My vision was a whimsical silvery vintage fall theme. I pictured branches, silver leaves, and antique elements. The bridesmaid dresses were actually called “Opal” so they took on different colors in different lighting. Posh Parties helped with a lot of DIY projects and set up as well. We could not have done it without them! They worked nearly around the clock to make sure every detail was picture perfect. It was a fairytale wedding come true. I also had vintage photos from both sides of our families weddings, such as my parent’s wedding, his parent’s wedding, our grandparent’s weddings, and even my great grandparent’s wedding! Everyone really enjoyed seeing them on display especially because they know it’s a reflection of my character - obsessed with vintage and family things.

Choose Your Bridesmaids Wisely

This no-drama guide will help you quit stressing over which ladies to choose for your bridal party!

“Why did I ever ask her to be a bridesmaid? She’s insane!” I cannot tell you how often I have heard these words from brides a month or two before their wedding. For whatever reason – be it number of attendants on the groom’s side, stress, or guilty association – some brides twist themselves in knots over which girls to choose for bridesmaids or (gasp!) the Maid of Honor. In a haste to make everyone who thinks she should be part of your bridal party happy, you ask ladies you really do not know well. Before you know it, you have a small army of attendants you rarely see until just before the wedding. Not cool! Every decision you make about your attendants can have a resounding effect on the moods surrounding the festivities both before and during your wedding day. Keep the following quick tips in mind before popping the big question to your girls!

1. Choose a friend or family member who will take being your bridesmaid seriously.

This means she will try to move her schedule around to help with your DIY tasks when she can, will listen to you rant about your wedding woes (but will stop you before you go over the edge!), and will even help plan your bridal shower. Then, she will actually commit to being at the shower. Make sure the lady you ask is tons of fun and would be willing to cut-up to relieve your stress - but she truly must be dependable, too. If someone you have in mind tends to RSVP to your get-togethers or parties and then doesn’t come, and you learn about the other party she went to instead via photos on Facebook, she is likely not bridesmaid material…no matter how fun she can make a party (if she actually arrives).

2. Choose attendants you can see yourself having strong friendships with well into the future.

Harsh as it sounds, asking ladies you do not expect to continue friendships with after you are married ultimately dates your

wedding. Honor your closest friends and family with this role – not the girls in your best friend’s group with whom you rarely spoke.

3. You do not have to have the same number of attendants on both sides.

So what if your groom has five guys, and you only chose four girls? It is really not that big of an issue. Leave your number where it is if it means you might ask someone you will regret choosing later. Keep in mind that having more maids means more bouquets, more bridal party gifts, and more miscellaneous costs, too.

4. Scared that choosing a Maid of Honor will hurt someone else’s feelings?

Do not be. The other ladies should understand that it is not necessarily a game of favorites. (Okay…maybe it is. Just a little.) If feelings do get hurt, let your other maids know that you chose your MOH for her planning and visionary abilities. You probably also chose her for her ability to nip drama in the bud before it starts, which is a must with almost any group of girls in a high-stress situation! The day is about you, and your MOH will be with you more than anyone else throughout the day. In other words, it is okay to have favorites here.

5. Think of the bottom line in the end!

Getting married is one of the most exhilarating experiences of your life. Cherish it with the ladies who have made your journey more meaningful because they have been a part of it! When it comes to choosing your attendants, I always say to think before you ask. Sleep on it. Chat with your future hubby about it. In the end, only pick the girls you are closest to. After all, if you are close to someone, you likely already know if she is “insane,” and you can save yourself the unpleasant surprise of finding out later! by Pink Lady Andrea

Best time for a cocktail party is 8:00 p.m. - it clues guests to grab a bite beforehand, whereas a 5:00 p.m. start time signals supper.

Plated Dinner – Who should choose it: Couples who want a quieter, more formal atmosphere and to make a grand impression. Who should avoid it: Minglers / Social butterflies. Dinners take time – spent eating, not dancing or chatting with anyone outside your table.

Buffet / Performance Stations – Who should choose them: Those who want to offer several entrees with a free-flowing vibe. Anything goes, from Mac ‘n cheese and sliders to a carving, pasta station or an impressive mashed potato bar. Who should avoid them: Couples with limited spaced. You’ll need several buffet tables or stations to keep lines from forming.

English Whitehead & Chuck Darryl Gomez Jr 06.09.13 Engaged: Our journey first began nearly six years ago in the Children’s Emergency Department at Erlanger during the summer of 2007. I was a recent nursing school graduate and Chuck was an ER tech that enjoyed making obvious, albeit quirky, jokes about my first name. Our interest in each other quickly grew into an inseparable friendship and ultimately a lasting relationship. In the spring of 2008 we became an official couple. During this time Chuck was applying for medical school. We were disappointed to find out that he did not get in but this gave our relationship time to blossom. The following year Chuck reapplied and was accepted into medical school in Memphis, TN. So in hopes of seeing Chuck at any free moment he may have I decided to move to Memphis with him. In 2011 we had the opportunity to move back to Chattanooga, TN while allowing Chuck to complete his clinicals for school at Erlanger. In the summer of 2012 Chuck had to do a few clinical rotations in other cities. When he returned from an away rotation he planned a night out for us. We had been wanting to eat at a local favorite, Tony’s Pasta, for a while. So on August 11, 2012 we headed out for what I thought was a normal Saturday date night. When we arrived at Tony’s Chuck dropped me off to put our name on the waiting list, while he parked the car. Chuck finally found a parking spot and came to wait with me, when he realized he forget his wallet at home. He seemed annoyed and a bit frazzled by this slip of his mind. I simply suggested for him to return home and retrieve his wallet while I continued waiting on our table. He returned and we were seated shortly after. We ate dinner and then Chuck suggested walking through the Bluff View Art District and possibly across the Walnut Street Bridge. I had some leftovers that I wanted to put in the car, so as Chuck and I are walking back to our car we run into my parents(who live in Cleveland, TN). Although I found it odd that my parents were sitting in their car in the same area we were I simply blew it off, as my parents can be spontaneous and random at times. After a very brief conversation with my parents we continued our walk through the art district. While walking on the Walnut Street Bridge Chuck suggested sitting on a bench. We sat down and Chuck started to tell me he loved me. I responded with an “I love you too”. After telling me two other times that he loved me I could tell he was very nervous. He then said, “I’m sorry I’m just nervous. I’m about to ask you something very important.” At that moment I started to realized what was about to happen and why he forgot his wallet and why we “ran into” my parents. At the same time Chuck slid off the bench and down on one knee. He told me how much he loved me and asked me to marry him. I said “YES!!!” When then met up with my anxiously awaiting parents and Chuck called his family. Side note: Chuck had gone to Cleveland earlier in the week to have dinner with my parents and ask for my dad’s permission to marry me. They had planned to meet up with us after we were engaged to celebrate. For our engagement session we wanted to capture the beauty our relationship and the spot where Chuck dropped to one knee and asked me to spend forever with him. So we had pictures in the Bluff View Art District and on the walking bridge. I really think Daisy Moffatt did a fantastic job in capturing our silliness and highlighting our love for each other. I haven’t mentioned our two sweet little pups but they joined us for our engagement session. When we first starting dating Chuck would give me a hard time about how I would dress Dixie in clothes and made such a fuss over her. She quickly stoles his heart and he spoils her more than me now. We added Murphy to our little family in 2010. We also wanted to capture the beautiful fall foliage and decided on Greenway Farms to do so. I love how the photos turned out. The pups were well behaved and Daisy was able to get some great pictures of all of us.

You can wear just about any style, but be aware of the lengths of jacket sleeves and pant legs. The shoulder pads in your jacket will add bulk without looking too boxy.

Ask your tuxedo specialist about the “fitted look,” which will highlight your trim physique, while the shoulder pads in the jacket will add just enough bulk to your look.

Avoid styles that seem to “hang” on your frame, and look for jackets with two or three buttons that begin lower, rather than higher. Your tuxedo specialist will tailor it to your physique so that you look your best.

Again, you can wear any style! Always watch the length on your jacket sleeves and pant legs.

Sarah Jane Park & Chase Moore 06.23.12 Love story: Chase and Sarah Jane met while students at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. It just so happened that one of Sarah Jane’s best friends and later bridesmaid lived in the same apartment complex as Chase and a few of his friends. What began as a close friendship slowly blossomed into romance. After two years of unofficial dates, Chase asked Sarah Jane to go to the Bristol race in March 2007. From there the couple never looked back. Unbeknownst to Sarah Jane until the rehearsal dinner, Chase’s mom and sister had come up for a football game a few years earlier and had met Sarah Jane while tailgating. They both hoped that one day the couple would start dating....amazing how things turn out. After 4 years of dating, Chase popped the question the night before Sarah Jane’s graduation from Trevecca University. Being the gentleman that he is, he had already gotten the blessing from the bride’s family a month before. Chase had a romantic dinner planned at their favorite resturant in Nashville, Cafe Nonna. The next day, the couple was able to enjoy a celebatory lunch with their families, following the graduation. Being the die hard Vol fans that they are, it was only fitting for the couple to do their engagement pictures on the campus of the University of Tennessee and even some in Neyland Stadium! Wedding Details: The bride’s father employed by Hardwick Clothes had custom suits with embroidered personalized labels made for the groomsmen. Hardwick Clothes also made custom blue/ white gingham vests for all the waiters/bartenders at the reception. The bride’s sister hand made the earrings for the bridesmaids to wear in the wedding. The bride worked closely with Nancy Deakins, a close family friend to create the vision with the flowers/decor for the wedding and reception. A close friend of the bride sang “How Great Thou Art” before the ceremony began and the bride’s two sisters sang “The Lord’s Prayer” during the ceremony. The singers were accompanied by Dr. Steve Hyman on the organ/piano, John Burton on the trumpet, and Mary Kathryn Vanosdale on the violin. The band, Total Assets played their first ever show in Tennessee at the couple’s wedding. The band being from Birmingham, AL are all Auburn/Alabama fans but promised the couple they would learn “Rocky Top” for the wedding. Favors at the wedding-navy koozies with the play on words “Moore Fun” The colors were navy/green/white/pink. The bridesmaids were in strapless navy dresses while the groomsmen were in gray suits with navy/light pink rep ties. The couple along with their families met througout the year with Nancy Deakins, a family friend to create the perfect day!

Steps To The Best Wedding Celebration Ever

If you dream of throwing the wedding of the decade, plan an event that focuses on honoring your guests throughout the evening. Follow the ten great tips below to planning a celebration your guests with thank you for later – and talk about for years to come!

1. Welcome your guests in style.

Besides stepping into a cozy, clean hotel room after a long day driving or flying to your wedding location, give your guests fashionable treats to make them feel more at home – and welcome! Include everything from local snacks and bottled water to area maps and information on local attractions. They’ll love relaxing with these treats before the festivities!

2. Choose an interesting locale.

Get expressive with where you tie the knot. This can be anywhere from your local zoo to even a museum or gallery nearby. Don’t limit your celebration to traditional venues! Guests will love the unique characteristics of your day because of the one-of-a-kind feel of the location.

3. Keep guests comfortable.

If you’re having an outdoor celebration during summer months, install fans to keep guests cool, and consider fan programs as wedding favors. If it’s during the winter, install heaters to keep the space warm and serve warm drinks. Rest rooms should be nearby no matter where your event is, and you should keep a check on the air conditioning and heat if your venue is indoors. The point is to never let your guests become uncomfortable!

4. Involve them in the ceremony.

Kick off the ceremony with a signature beverage as guests arrive, and allow them to sip and chat before the processional begins. This is a surefire way to break the ice and drum up conversations that will last throughout the evening. Not sure what to serve? A cool, refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) during warm months would be great, and good, old-fashioned hot chocolate would be wonderful during the cooler months. You can also ask guests to give you advice for wedded bliss as you start your new life together.


5. The transition from ceremony to reception should be quick.

Let’s face it: if guests have to travel more than 30 minutes between your ceremony and reception site, or if they have to wait that long for your arrival to begin celebrating, they won’t really be in the partying mood by the time the reception starts. Choose venues that are near each other for your ceremony and reception, and cater your timeline to making sure your guests are entertained.

6. Let your guests make a grand entrance.

Treat them to a rock-star arrival by having each guest ushered into the reception hall with drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and lively music. This makes them feel like a true part of the celebration and sets a vibrant tone for the rest of the evening!

7. Keep them interested with a full itinerary.

The party should never hit a lull where guests sneakily start checking their watches. Make sure you’ve got plenty lined up for their entertainment by dispersing special dances, speeches, and toasts throughout the evening. Also consider having a photo booth near for guests to enjoy! Constantly change things up, rather than having long stretches of time with the same activity.

8. Food and beverages are the key to a great celebration.

People tend to chat more and feel more comfortable when food and drinks are involved, so make sure you foster that great sense of welcome and hospitality by ensuring that they always have something to snack on and drink throughout the evening. Ask your caterer to provide servers who will mingle with the guests, refreshing plates and drinks regularly.

9. Dance the night away with great entertainment. One of the biggest details of throwing the celebration of a lifetime depends upon your entertainment choice – meaning your band or DJ. This is so much more than just playing music! A professional band or DJ will be able to read the crowd and play music that will either get them up and dancing or relax them. If you want your guests talking about your celebration for years, put some work into finding the perfect entertainment choice!

10. Plan the after-party!

Give your more party-friendly crowd somewhere to take their dancing shoes after the big exit at the reception. Plan an after-party! This can be at a nearby locale, and food, beverages, and entertainment should be in ample supply. Just make sure that you have important numbers handy in case you need to call someone a cab or need to get in touch with someone fast!

Christa Austin & Zach Mellencamp 10.20.12 Love story: Zach and I went to the same high school and met through mutual friends. We dated for four years and one week before my birthday in September of 2011, Zach proposed. I wanted a puppy so my nine year old pug would have a companion and Zach had me convinced that I was going to get one. On my way home, Zach called and asked me when I was going to be home, which was very suspicious. I immediately thought, that I would walk in and see my new little puppy. When I opened the door, I noticed a red balloon with a clue attached to it, which eventually lead me to our master bedroom. On the night stand was a dozen red roses and a note directing me to turn around. When I turned around, Zach was down on one knee. Zach wasn’t holding a puppy, but a box with a beautiful engagement ring. After the proposal, both of our families joined us for dinner to celebrate our engagement. Wedding day: The most memorable moment for Zach and I was our first look pictures. Zach and I don’t do well with being the center of attention, so our “first look” in the breezeway of the church was the perfect setting. We both had a chance to breathe and appreciate the moment. We really were unsure about taking our pictures before hand, because of tradition. BUT it was the best decision! Zach and I were engaged for a year. We immediately started planning the wedding and we both knew we wanted a fall wedding. Zach and I chose First Cumberland Presbyterian Church because of the beautiful architectural detail and cathedral feel that would make any girl feel like a princess on their wedding day. From the invitations to the wedding colors of eggplant and silver, we wanted the wedding to be very elegant and traditional. With the help of Soiree’s of Chattanooga, our vision of the wedding was transformed into a magical day. After the ceremony, the reception was held at The Chattanooga Golf and Country Club, where we celebrated and completed our wedding day with our family and friends. Advice: The best advice that I have for a bride and groom planning their wedding is to not let the little details get in the way of the big picture. Enjoy your day!

Bethany Pelts & Matthew Smisson 02.16.13 Love story: After about a year of dating, Matthew popped the question at Point Park on Lookout Mountain where we had our first kiss. I thought we were going on a picnic with some friends. However he had a whole other scheme planned. He gave me a present when we arrived. It was a Bible that was engraved on the outside reading ‘Bethany Pelts Smisson,’ inside he had written, “To my Bride, on the day of our engagement, from your utmost admirer.” I looked up at him and said WHAT?! Matthew was standing there holding the ring. I quickly told him he better get down on one knee if he was to ask me. He did while trying not to fall down the embankment and then popped the question. Of course I said YES! Not only were there tourists who had stopped to watch but Matthew had a photographer hiding behind the trees taking pictures the entire time!! Wedding Details: I wanted a very classy/elegant theme since our wedding was at 7:00 in the evening. I chose black, blush, and champagne for my colors. My dad is a wedding photographer in West Virginia, so he was very adamant that we hire the best photographer in the area. Being his only girl, he did not want to be worrying about having to take pictures but rather enjoy the day. We met with John and Lindsey Bamber and after the meeting my dad said he was ready to write them a check. He was sold! I was shocked! I figured finding a photographer that would meet his standards would take awhile. It’s a good thing I scheduled our first meeting with the Bambers! Wedding Advice: Because planning a wedding can be extremely stressful we had to keep reminding ourselves that no matter what happened it will all be perfect at the end of the day, and it was! We created a schedule for all members of the bridal party for the day of the wedding, that way everyone new where they needed to be and what time they needed to be there. On that schedule we included a phone directory with everyone’s phone number that was involved with the day, the bride and groom, parents, wedding coordinators, delivery folks, and bridal party members. This made everything go smooth and according to plan. We would do it all over again in a heartbeat! Just make sure you work to plan all the little details out in advance because those are the things that can make or break a wedding. Most importantly for the bride and groom, sit back and enjoy the day. It is the only time the two of you will be able to have that experience with each other!

Assign each guest a letter in the bride-to-be’s full (married!) name. Then, have the guests purchase items from her registry, wrap the gift, and decorate it with the letter they were assigned. Alternatively, guests can give an appliance used in the dish’s creation. Another favorite way of conducting this shower is to have guests prepare each dish to bring to the shower for everyone to eat! Guest favors could be cute cookie-cutters or mini whisks.

Assign each guest a room in the house to purchase an item for from her registry. Decorations should be in the bride’s favorite color to accent her home. Serve foods she loves! Guest favors could be little key necklaces.

3. Honeymoon Shower Encourage guests to purchase gifts for the bride and groom via their honeymoon registry. Alternatively, give guests the option of purchasing a gift that would celebrate their honeymoon location, like flip-flops, sunglasses, or signature drink mixes. Wrapping paper and decorations could follow the honeymoon destination theme! Guest favors could be a keychain with the destination theme – like a mini Eiffel Tower or sand in a bottle.

Catherine Cox & Michael Lister Jr. 07.28.12 Love story: We met during our freshman year at the University of Tennessee, and really became friends until our sophomore year during our 8 a.m. History of Rock class. After every class, we ate breakfast together and talked until our next classes. We would talk for hours about anything and everything and we came to cherish those times. One day, Mike worked up the courage to ask me out and after a little convincing, I said yes. Wedding day: We were amazed at how fast the day went by! We tried to just enjoy it. There were a few things that did not go as planned. It started raining right before our ceremony started. Our get away car, a bright blue 1963 Ford Falcon convertible, lost it’s brakes on our way to the reception so thankfully Daisy and Beau gave us a ride! We laughed through it all and had a wonderful day. The first look was one of our favorite moments! We debated if we should do a first look, or wait to see each other traditionally at the alter, and we were so glad that we did. The day gets so crazy that it was wonderful to have a moment to ourselves to just be together. Mike said that that moment took away all of his nerves, and after that he was just excited. Another of our favorite moments was during the ceremony our minister asked us to turn and face the crowd, to see how many people were there to celebrate and support our marriage. It was a beautiful humbling moment. Wedding details: When we thought about our wedding we really wanted something fun and different. When I found the fabric that we used I fell in love. Our wedding theme was really centered on the fabric. I had wanted to have an outdoor wedding, but it was July in the south. Instead I tried to make The Mill feel like a green house by using lots of live ferns. So many people helped us make this day special. Callie’s grandmother made the table toppers that helped make the wedding unique. Callie’s grandmother also made her veil. Mike’s aunts made his favorite cake, red velvet for his groom’s cake from his great great grandmother’s recipe. Because Mike’s family owns Famous Dave’s we were able to serve our favorite comfort foods, and family recipes on our big day. Both of our families are so blessed to have great friends that did so much to help our day go smoothly. Monkey Town Doughnuts, the bride’s favorite, served hot doughnuts and coffee to our guests as their parting gift.

Is wedding advice coming at you from every angle? Determine what’s fact and what’s fiction by debunking these common wedding myths.

IT’S NOT REALLY A WEDDING IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW TRADITION. The first person to buck tradition and wear white was Queen Victoria (that’s right...brides have not always worn white). This is now taken for granted as standard attire as is a wedding cake, first dance, bouquet toss and something blue. A wedding simply requires an officiant, license and witness. The celebration of said wedding should be an expression of the couple’s personalities, and sometimes breaking the rules leads to new traditions that are a better fit than those of past generations.

The Bride’s parents pay for wedding and reception; groom’s parents pay for rehearsal dinner. Wouldn’t it be nice if Mom and Dad still footed the bill? Not so with modern weddings. This myth goes out the window, as at least a third of wedding costs are now covered by the couple themselves. Families today are pooling their resources and then, together, determining how funds are spent for all related events.

THE BRIDE CAN ONLY BE GIVEN AWAY BY HER FATHER.

While email is the preferred way of communication for many a message, it is generally frowned upon when thanking your wedding guests. Hand written thank-you notes are far from outdated, and though tedious to a generation of texters, it must be done. Appreciate this dying art, and take the time to communicate as your grandparents would. Years later, a friend will dig out your hand written note, carefully saved. Not your email.

This myth dates back to the days of old, when daughters were literal property of their fathers, and a wedding was merely a business deal for Dad to expand his fortunes through the sale of his daughter. While the tradition still sticks to this day, I doubt very much that modern brides would describe themselves as part of dad’s estate. Your aisle escort should be a person that played a significant and supportive role in your path to finding true love.

WEDDING LUCK (AND MARRIAGE) DEPENDS ON A SIXPENCE, SPIDERS AND SUPERSTITIONS. Here’s the thing about luck... it all depends on the belief that wearing a certain color, carrying a token or changing your behavior will shift future events to their preferred outcome. Luck is mostly used as a way to counter those things completely out of our control and has often been a way of explaining the unexplained. If only making it through the first year of marriage was as easy as saving the top tier of your cake. Make your own luck with careful planning, professional vendors and a positive attitude.

If you can’t foot the bar bill, offer a cash bar.

Wedding vendors are not Mexican bazaars where you haggle the best possible deal. While a vendor may run a promotion, expecting to get a discount because you’re a bride is like expecting your doctor to run a special because you’re a patient. This doesn’t make long-term business sense. Instead, plan to attend a local bridal show for show-only specials or giveaways, and be honest about your budget and vision with wedding vendors. Professionals will work with brides to find creative ways to stretch your buck and meet their bottom line.

Cash bars are T-A-C-K-Y... as well as anything else on your wedding day that require your guests to pony up cash. Remember these are the same dearly loved friends and family that bought a special outfit, traveled across the country, paid for a hotel room and bought you a gift for your wedding. During the wedding day, guests’ wallets should stay in back pockets and purses. Tactful Solution: If you are set on offering liquor at your wedding but fear the cost, consider a limited bar with only wine and beer (better yet keg beer, often costing half as much per serving as bottled).

With the vastness of today’s World Wide Web, the likelihood of finding a bargain can make DIY more costly than one thinks. This is even more apparent when your inner crafter is not well-matched to make DIY magic (but Martha Stewart made it look so easy!). And remember, time is money, even if it is your time. Be realistic about how much time will need to be dedicated to DIY projects, particularly in the last few weeks leading up to wedding day (when the to-do list is never ending and you’d rather be with your family). If the budget is stretched thin, it might make more sense to skip it all together.

While you and your groom are certainly the guests of honor, a bride with her sights set on making wedding day entirely about her is likely to be labeled a bridezilla. Weddings are as much about the happy couple and their new life together as it is a celebration for all the related family members. Instead, find ways to celebrate your family or close friends and their traditions with your new love and the traditions in store for years to come. This ensures your guests feel part of a truly special event.

Your bridal party must have the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen. Today’s bride has thrown out all the rules when it comes to bridal parties. With your closest friends and family by your side on wedding day, trying to stay in the box of specific numbers or even genders just doesn’t work. Straight-Figured

Try a mermaid or trumpet silhouette. Both help you seem curvier and make your bust and hips look more proportioned. If you really enjoy the idea of a ball gown, try that too! It will capitalize on your small waist and create a more pronounced hip.

Plus-Sized

Find a dress with an open neckline – ideally a strapless sweetheart. Do not opt for sleeves or a cover over your arms. Look for a dress with ruching that comes to a point, as this separates the bust and the hip perfectly.

Small Bust

Look for a gown with a sweetheart neckline and ruching at the top. This creates volume where you need it most.

Busty

Play down your bust by avoiding straight necklines. Rather, choose a sweetheart neckline or a scooped neckline. Opt for a modified A-line dress with beads and detailing further down the dress to avoid drawing more attention up top.

Tall

Seek a design with minimal frills that accents your long lines. An Empire dress can do just that. The dress will pull in right at or just below your natural waist.

Short

The fit and flair cut with a sweetheart neckline will be flattering on you. Keep in mind while shopping that a higher waist creates the illusion of a longer torso. Embellishments are great for this body type, but they should be small and clustered mainly at the top of the dress.

Pear Shape

A gown with thick straps or a one-shoulder look will help pull the eye away from your hips. A flowing gown with a natural waist will also help conceal this area.

Apple Shape

Seek out dresses with lots of ruching all over to create shape. A V-neck is slimming and draws the eye up, rather than across, too.

No matter what dress style you choose in the end, all that matters is how you feel in it. Keep an open mind to conflicting opinions, but do not let yourself lose focus in the midst of them. Your opinion matters most! Follow your professional’s suggestions as you try on different styles, and ultimately choose the dress you feel the most beautiful and confident in as you look in the mirror. Regardless of your body type, if you are happy and confident on your wedding day, you will be gorgeous!

Jessica Justice & Jacques McClendon 03.31.12 Love story: Jacques and I have known each other since about the 6th grade. I was always so nervous to talk to him! I guess like little boys do, he picked on me every time he got the chance : ) After high school Jacques went to to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, while I went to Lee. We always stayed in touch and during college I realized my life would never be complete without him. Looks like I hooked the man of my dreams, he proposed July 23, 2011 and we were married March 31, 2012. Wedding Details: I really wanted our wedding to be a true reflection of Jacques and I both. My vision was Classy and Elegant but yet very fun and bit traditional. I have been told I have a unique taste. Unique in the way that anything goes. I think both of our personalities were really brought to life. Our colors were plum, orange and champagne. My flowers really popped, they were exactly what I wanted. My bridesmaids wore strapless dresses in plum by Bill Levkoff with a champagne peep toe heel. Jacques made the decisions on his apparel that day. He said a white jacket and bow tie were a must. (Somehow he managed to sneak on a pair of Space Jam Jordan high tops as his dancing shoes for the reception). One very important detail was hiring a photographer. They say you dont remember the little details , and I am so happy that John and Lindsey Bamber captured the best moments. I have been looking back on those pictures every day and I know I will for many years to come. I really didn’t “DIY” anything. I left little details up to my mom and best friends. I am more of a pen and paper type of girl so I made lots and lots of notes, and made a vision board with Bridal Magazine pictures. Wedding Day: The weekend of the wedding my whole bridal party came into town and stay at my parents house. My parents, Wanda and David have been married for 30 years. I felt blessed to be able to reflect on their marriage with them the day before I married my best friend. All day saturday getting ready was perfect I had all my best friends in the room with me, It seriously was so laid back and relaxed I was unbelievable calm. I was happy the entire day! Being a daddy’s girl the one thing that made me cry was giving my dad his “I loved her first” cufflinks.

Project costs can quickly add up as mistakes and miscalculations have you purchasing extra supplies and especially if you end up throwing in the towel and hiring a pro at the last minute. In the end, it can be cheaper and easier to work with a professional from the get-go, saving you the hassle, time and wasted money.

I can’t tell you how many exhausted DIYers come wedding week are stuck setting out and cleaning up these projects on wedding day. But you don’t have to be. Give yourself a break, and see if your wedding planner, caterer or venue staff can take over the set-up (and clean up!). Most will be more than happy to help, leaving you to sit back and enjoy your wedding.

I have a love/hate relationship with Martha Stewart. With ethereal precision, she makes even the most tedious and complicated of crafts appear effortlessly mundane and obvious. I have learned that I am no Martha... none of us are. Find DIY success by being realistic about your crafting skills (and available time). With so many other things to worry about on wedding day, aspiring to be a professional shouldn’t be one of them.

try something for the first time Procrastinate The second most common mistake (after assuming you’re a crafting goddess) is waiting until the last minute. Case and point, it took me almost 8 months to stop thinking about refinishing my desk and getting to it. And I am still contemplating changing out the drawer pulls. Decoupaging hundreds of tiny votives placecards seems easy enough. Until you are wrist-deep in white goop, pulling all-nighters leading up to wedding day while you second guess the finished look. Assume all wedding-related crafting will take much longer than expected. Worse-case scenario, you can still hand things off to the pros if finishing looks unlikely.

I catch myself saying all the time, “Well, that looks easy enough!” Of course I needed 40 grit sandpaper, not 80! Yeah... so I don’t even know the real difference between 40, 80 or under what circumstances they are most appropriate. While I have no problem bumbling through trial-and-error projects, likely never to see the light of day, weddings are different. Under immense stress to figure out how all this wedding planning works, learning a new skill within the same timeline can be overwhelming. Save yourself the stress and hand off first-time projects to professionals.

I planned the wedding myself with the help of fabulous family and friends. I had two friends (who are planners themselves) that stepped up to coordinate everything the day of. This was a huge relief because I could just sit back and take everything in without worry of any last minute details!

Behind the Story

Colby and I did a first look, and our photographers made this session one of our favorite parts of the day. It did not take away from seeing each other during the ceremony, but actually added to the excitement! We were able to have plenty of time for photographs, and to enjoy our family and friends all throughout the day. It was so nice to have some time just the two of us before everything got started, and we still cherish being able to have those moments! Wedding Details: When planning colors, details, flowers, etc, we wanted everything to have a personal meaning. Lavender is a family name on Colby’s side, so there were hints of lavender in the ceremony flowers and bridesmaid bouquets. Our invitations were custom designed for us by a coworker and friend, which made them so special (not to mention gorgeous)! My uncle had worked for Coke and I grew up drinking the old bottles at his house, so we served those for the reception. Colby’s family is from the Gulf Coast, and his dad makes some wonderful seafood dishes. We had his crawfish bisque receipe served during the cocktail hour, which included a short IMAX movie while the reception space was being flipped! I even wore my grandfather’s favorite shirt to get ready that day in order to have him there with me. Love story: Colby and I met on the sand volleyball court in Chattanooga. At the time he was seeing someone else, but we became friends as we continued to cross paths playing volleyball around town. We ended up on the same team for a league at the YMCA, and began dating a few months later. Colby proposed at a park that we frequented together right before I had to coach a youth volleyball game. It was perfect because the proposal itself was very intimate, but we were able to share with our families and my team right after! It made for an exciting game and a big win as well!

Lara Prince & Jeremy Fisher 07.28.12 Wedding Details: We were engaged 9 months and those 9 months went smoothly because of our fabulous wedding planners from Foxy Events. The most important thing to us about the wedding was to just have a good time and that our guest have a great time as well. The vision was for a traditional and fun wedding. Traditionally we wanted to be married in a church by our pastor with traditional vows. We wanted our guest to remember our wedding as a fun, laid back night which is why we had an upbeat Motown band, photo booth and buffet style dinner accompanied by our two signature drinks the “Blushing Bride” and the “Honey Badger.” At the entrance of the reception location was a DIY project that consisted of a shadow box with items from the day that we got engaged. Our colors we chose for our wedding day were coral, green and champagne. Wedding day: I prepared with a full day of primping at the Sheraton Read House with my bridesmaids while Jeremy played golf with his groomsmen. One moment we both remember was during the ceremony when I leaned in to kiss Jeremy only to figure out it was not time for that yet and the entire sanctuary laughed. There are many memorable moments so it is hard to pick, but the moment we first saw each other has to take number one. We did not see each other before the wedding so the first time we laid eyes on each other was when I was walking down the aisle to Jeremy. Another memorable moment was opening my wedding gift from Jeremy which was a new Bible with my new name engraved. Both of our dads gave heartwarming toast at the reception that we will forever cherish. Last but not least was Jeremy’s grooms cake, his buddy and his dog Boudreaux. The one thing that he requested was to have his grooms cake be a replica of Boudreaux dressed in LSU gear, so that was exciting for Jeremy to see that come together. We had planned for rain but did not expect it, but thanks to our wedding planners the cocktail hour that was supposed to be outdoors went off without a hitch indoors.

Christina Humphrey & Jake Broome 05.12.12 Love story: Jake and I went to college together but didn’t know each other, even though we shared a lot of the same friends. I knew who he was and had always thought he was cute. I remembered seeing him at school wearing medical scrubs, so I was sure he was pre med. Little did I know, he just liked wearing scrub pants! Even though we had all this in common, it was actually through a chance meeting at a local hangout that brought us together. He was sitting at a table full of people I knew....So I made my move. We ended up talking all night, and the next night, and the next...you get the picture. Wedding Details: We were engaged for 11 months. My mom helped tremendously. and of course my sweet fiancée was incredibly helpful. We went to several bridal shows to get ideas for locations, vendors and decor. We hired a “day of” planner just to ensure that everything would go smoothly on the day of and so that I could just focus on Jake and our friends and family.

The most important thing to me with our wedding was making sure that we had a day that reflected both of us, the life we have created together, and ensuring that we could share it with our friends and family. We tried to be very cost savvy and to make sure that we kept the focus on what we felt comfortable with. I wanted a very classic, clean,crisp look so I used linen, gray and navy blue. I also wanted something that was very Southern but with modern touches. I really wanted everything to reflect back on our city we love, Chattanooga. The ceremony didn’t need much decoration at all since the Grandview is already so beautiful and the view of the valley is so stunning but since the reception was in a pavilion, I really wanted it to be casual but yet, still stylish. I bought fabric and made table cloths and runners I collected lanterns, vases, trinkets etc. throughout the months. To thank our family and friends for being there for us we gave everyone “Chattanooga goods” and gave Rock City Rock candy, Double cola and moonpies! Our out of town guests loved the nod to the scenic city! We also gave a donation to one of our favorite charities in honor of each of them. The photography was very important to us. We ended up doing our engagement, wedding and even a day after shoot. The day after shoot was actually a week after our wedding (after the honeymoon) and it was one of the best decisions we feel that we made. We were able to get “more bang for our buck” and we got to go to a different location than our wedding and have a completely different setting. And we weren’t distracted by the wedding details going on and the schedule etc. like we could have been on the wedding day.

Q. As the Mother of the Bride, do I have to wear a long dress? Does the Mother of the Groom have to wear the same length as me? Would it ever be appropriate to wear the same color as the Bridesmaid‘s dress?

Q. As the Mother of the Bride, do I have to wear a long dress? Does the Mother of the Groom have to wear the same length as me? Would it ever be appropriate to wear the same color as the Bridesmaid’s dress?

A. Dolores Murphy, Monica’s: As Mother of the Bride,you are the second most important female at the wedding. As the hostess of the event, you may wear any length you wish. The Mother of the Groom should wear the same length as the Mother of the Bride. The only person having an opinion on this matter is the Bride. Generally, mothers don’t wear the same color as the bridesmaids. However, the color that she picks should complement the bridesmaids’ color. Once again, the bride should have an important opinion on this subject.

A. Maria Prince, Watters: The only time a long dress is a must is when the event states “Black or White Tie” or Formal. If not, you should feel free to flaunt a fabulous cocktail or knee length dress or suit. Of course, this also calls for killer shoes which will be shown off with a shorter length. While you don’t necessarily have to both wear the same length, my advice is to coordinate with one another so that both mothers feel like stars on the big day. No need to start a Hatfield & McCoy challenge!

Q. How far in advance should I order my dress? Why am I such a bigger size in bridal fashion than in everyday clothes? A. Dolores Murphy, Monica’s: Mothers always leave themselves last on the list. As a rule, mothers’ dresses should be ordered four to five months before the wedding. They need to give themselves time to get the dress altered. For those moms trying to lose weight, their dress can always be altered or taken in. As far as sizing goes, each manufacturer has their own size chart. Some are fair and some are evil.

Q. What are the biggest upcoming trends in color and style for Mothers? A. Dolores Murphy, Monica’s: Mothers dresses are looking younger all the time. Modified fit and flare dresses that are fitted properly are a big hit. Jacket styles continue to be very popular and illusion sleeve styles are becoming more important as well. Jewel tones continue to be a leading color choice for moms. Basically, the style choice should complement your personality!

I would not suggest wearing the same color as the bridesmaids unless you are also taking a dual role as the brides-only attendant. If a monochromatic look is what is desired, slightly lighter or deeper shades work beautifully.

Q. How far in advance should I order my dress? Why am I such a bigger size in bridal fashion than in everyday clothes? A. Maria Prince, Watters: Give yourself enough time to allow for fittings and for finding the perfect accessories, I would recommend a fitting 10 weeks out. Why add more stress than is needed? For those last minute shoppers, you can also request a rush cut for a bit quicker delivery.

Q. What are the biggest upcoming trends in color and style for Mothers? A. Maria Prince, Watters: We are seeing beautiful bold jewel tones emerge for summer 2012. With bridesmaids wearing clear pops of color, a contrasting color is fantastic. Muted shades are also always lovely companions to most color stories and give off a more subtle look. Most of all choose a dress that complements your personal style and taste as you will look and feel great all day/evening long.

Melissa Bergevin & Michael Miesner 03.03.12 Love story: Michael & I were both pursuing post-graduate degrees at the same university. We actually met online in May, but had been in the same building on campus for a year straight, crossing paths and on opposite floors of the building. On our very first date, we just knew that we had met our spouse. It only took 15 minutes into our dinner to realize that we were totally going to hit it off and that this was “the real deal”. Our relationship grew quickly through our love of hiking in East Tennessee that following summer!! Later that same summer, Michael proposed to me while hiking in North Carolina. It was perfect! We actually weren’t able to finish the hike that day, because I was so ready to share our news with friends and family. But it was so special. We had come around a corner of the trail where I stopped to take a picture. I had just gotten done saying that this was one of the most beautiful spots I had ever seen. As I turned to give the camera to Michael, he was already down on one knee. After bouncing for a while, I was able to say “yes!” And the rest was history... Wedding Details: We were engaged for 8 months. However, both of us in graduate school (on the other side of the state!) So every last detail was planned long distance. We planned the wedding in weekend visits. But the details (although spectacular) were really not a big deal to us. We would tell our vendors our budget, and then ask them to “wow” us. It was a win-win for everyone! Our vendors were able to bring their A-game in every possible way...and it was gorgeous!! The vision for our wedding was “simple elegance”. We tied in navy and cream into the room and decor. The guest’s table included personalized “date night cards” for them to fill out together (which we keep in a really cool box at our entry way). We also put together little bags of navy and pearl “m&m’s” from Melissa & Michael... Wedding Day: It was a whirlwind weekend...quite literally. The night before our wedding was eventful to say the least! We had tornadoes rip through Chattanooga, sending all of our guests to the basement of the hotel (on two occasions). But oh, the actual day of our wedding was GORGEOUS! So since then, our wedding has lovingly been termed, “the tornado wedding” by our close friends and family. The day of was filled with so much laughter and joy with our friends and family. I loved everything about our day...but the best memory I take from the whole thing was the feeling both Michael & I shared as we walked down that aisle together...it felt as though God was saying, “this is good.”...and it was.
