Lauren Allen & Nicholas Davis Jr. April 10, 2010

PHOTOGRAPHY BY Daisy Moffatt Photography

Lauren Allen & Nicholas Davis Jr. 04.10.10 The Big Day: I don’t think I cried at all on my wedding day. Surprisingly, I was the least nervous and stressed than I had ever been throughout my engagement. I woke up knowing that if anything went wrong or didn’t turn out the way I had envisioned, it was too late to do anything about it so I was just going to enjoy our day. I think the funniest moment was when we were saying our vows...Nick was repeating the priest saying “I take you Lauren” and he instead said without even thinking “I take you LA” (which is what he calls me) - the whole congregation started laughing hysterically and the priest had to make him repeat it using my official name. It truly was the most perfect day of my life. Everything turned out more amazing that I had ever planned or could have imagined. The only thing that I was upset about was that it had to end. Details: I wanted a “Tuscan-themed” wedding. I chose earth tones (burnt orange, sunset red, green, champagne, and brown) and wanted everything to be naturally-elegant. I wasn’t the kind of bride that was obsessed with finding the perfect dress or invitations. What I put most of my time into were the food, wine and flowers. I worked with my caterer to customize an Italian-themed menu consisting of specialty pizzas, lamb, pasta, roasted veggies, a cheese display, caprese skewers, pearl mac & cheese and other fun items. We didn’t have a grooms cake, instead my sister-in-law made cheesecake lollipops. I think they were gone before our first dance; they were amazing! My flowers were UNBELIEVABLE. I had the florist work some herbs and vegetables into the arrangements. The table arrangements were wrapped in leaves and jute rope to continue the natural theme. The bridesmaids’ arrangements had lilies and cabbage roses and rosemary sprigs...just gorgeous. I wanted the cocktail hour to be similar to a wine and cheese tasting so I picked hors d’oeuvres that involved cheese, a cheese/cracker display and selected a few of my favorite wines to be passed around. We had different wine for the reception. I wanted my bridesmaids’ dresses to be unique and very natural, so I was determined to find something different; I found the perfect dress at Anthropologie. I loved it so much that I bought one for myself and wore it out after the reception. I continued the Italian theme with my welcome bags and favors. I put mini wine bottles and cheese and crackers in the bags and I made wine stoppers as my favors. For the stoppers, I ordered personalized golf balls that said “Nick and LA 4.10.10” and I glued each to a wine cork - Although I came up with the idea, I have to give my Dad and brother credit for putting them together for me. My guestbook was made by one of my bridesmaids. She gathered all the pictures from the parties and put together a book including blank pages where everyone could sign; it was awesome.

Jessica Frame & William Giles i.v. June 11, 2011

PHOTOGRAPHY BY Bamber Photography

Jessica Frame & William Giles i.v. 06.11.11 The Proposal: One of our favorite activities is hiking. Willaim surprised me on the first Saturday of May with a hiking trip to Lula Lake. We hiked down to Lula Falls, right through poison ivy!!! There was an awesome couple who offered to take pictures of us in front of the falls. After our photo we made our way out further to get a better picture of the falls. The water was crashing into the rocks and made it so loud down there. William pulled at the back of my shirt to get my attention. When I turned around he was kneeling on one knee with a beautiful ring in his hand. Ever his style, he simply asked me to marry him! Of course I said yes. The couple had seen what was taking place and had not hiked back up to the trail, so they were able to capture photos of us right after the proposal. The Big Day: Our big day was such a blur! I really enjoyed spending time with my friends while we all got ready. I borrowed my shoes and veil from two of my bridesmaids. It made me feel good to have a part of their wedding day with me. Bamber Photography was SO much fun to work with and I loved all the pictures we took before and after the wedding. We LOVE the city of Chattanooga with all our hearts and Bamber Photography was able to capture the soul of chatt in our photos. I loved coming down the aisle, it was amazing to see my future husband waiting at the end for me. I was so focused on him that I don’t remember seeing any of our guests! My dad and I both had to get ourselves together before we stepped into the chapel. Then again during our toasts!! My dad is just awesome and he was so emotional that day. Our reception was so much fun. The band was amazing and we even had some wedding crashers (friends of friends) that showed up and made it even more of a party! At the end of the night we ran through sparklers to the top of the double decker bus. I had planned on all our guests joining us on the ride back to the hotel, but the driver pulled away from our guests. He wanted us to have a special ride with just the two of us. Wedding Details: My vision was something very simple yet beautiful. We had potted orchids with tea lights for our center pieces. Each table was named for an organization that we donate to and support. My amazing mother did all the invitations and table cards. Our colors were navy and grey. We had splashes of green in the floral arrangements. We wanted our wedding to be a party, a big celebration with great food and fun music. Thanks to the girls at Soirees it came out just as we had planned.

BRIDAL MYTHS

Debunked!

Is wedding advice coming at you from every angle? Determine what’s fact and what’s fiction by debunking these common wedding myths.

1

IT’S NOT REALLY A WEDDING IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW TRADITION. The first person to buck tradition and wear white was Queen Victoria (that’s right...brides have not always worn white). This is now taken for granted as standard attire as is a wedding cake, first dance, bouquet toss and something blue. A wedding simply requires an officiant, license and witness. The celebration of said wedding should be an expression of the couple’s personalities and sometimes breaking the rules leads to new traditions that are a better fit than those of past generations.

4

The Bride’s parents pay for wedding and reception, groom’s parents pay for rehearsal dinner. Wouldn’t it be nice if Mom and Dad still footed the bill but not so with modern weddings. This myth goes out the window as at least a third of wedding costs are now covered by the couple themselves. Families today are pooling their resources and then together, determining how funds are spent for all related events.

2

Thank you notes can be sent by email.

3

THE BRIDE CAN ONLY BE GIVEN AWAY BY HER FATHER.

While email is the preferred way of communication for many a message, it is generally frowned upon when thanking your wedding guests. Hand written thank-you notes are far from out-dated and though tedious to a generation of texters, it must be done. Appreciate this dying art and take the time to communicate as your grandparents. Years later, a friend will dig out your hand written note, carefully saved. Not your email.

This myth dates back to the days of old, when daughters were literal property of their fathers and a wedding was merely a business deal for Dad to expand his fortunes through the sale of his daughter. While the tradition still sticks to this day, I doubt very much that modern brides would describe themselves as part of dad’s estate. Your aisle escort should be a person that played a significant and supportive role in your path to find true love.

5

WEDDING LUCK (AND MARRIAGE) DEPENDS ON A SIXPENCE, SPIDERS AND SUPERSTITIONS. Here’s the thing about luck... it all depends on the belief that wearing a certain color, carrying a token or changing your behavior will shift future events to their preferred outcome. Luck is mostly used as a way to counter those things completely out of our control and has often been a way of explaining the unexplained. If only making it through the first year of marriage was as easy as saving the top tier of your cake. Make your own luck with careful planning, professional vendors and a positive attitude.

6

Vendors will always give a discount if you ask.

7

If you can’t foot the bar bill, offer a cash bar.

Wedding vendors are not Mexican bazaars where you haggle the best possible deal. While a vendor may run a promotion, expecting to get a discount because you’re a bride is like expecting your doctor to run a special because you’re a patient. This doesn’t make long-term business sense. Instead, plan to attend a local bridal show for show-only specials or giveaways and be honest about your budget and vision with wedding vendors. Professionals will work with brides to find creative ways to stretch your buck and meet their bottom line.

Cash bars are T-A-C-K-Y... as well as anything else on your wedding day that require your guests pony up cash. Remember these are the same dearly loved friends and family that bought a special outfit, traveled across the country, paid for a hotel room and bought you a gift for your wedding. During the wedding day, guests’ wallets should stay in back pockets and purses. Tactful Solution… If you are set on offering liquor at your wedding but fear the cost, consider a limited bar with only wine and beer (better yet keg beer, often costing half as much per serving as bottled).

10

8

Brides on a budget save big with DIY Projects.

9

Wedding Day is the Bride’s Day.

With the vastness of today’s World Wide Web, the likelihood of finding a bargain can make DIY more costly than one thinks. This is even more apparent when your inner crafter is not well matched to make DIY magic (but Martha Stewart made it look so easy!). And remember time is money, even if it is your time. Be realistic about how much time will need to be dedicated to DIY projects, particularly in the last few weeks leading up to wedding day (when the to-do list is never ending and you’d rather be with your family). If the budget is stretched thin, it might make more sense to skip it all together.

While you and your groom are certainly the guests of honor, a bride with her sights set on making wedding day entirely about her is likely to be labeled a bridezilla. Weddings are as much about the happy couple and their new life together as it is a celebration for all the related family members. Instead find ways to celebrate your family or close friends and their traditions with your new love and the traditions in store for years to come. This ensures your guests feel part of a truly special event.

Your bridal party must have the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen. Today’s bride has thrown out all the rules when it comes to bridal parties. With you closest friends and family by your side on wedding day, trying to stay in the box of specific numbers or even genders just doesn’t work. Nowadays, your maid of honor is now your man of honor, pooches are playing ring bearer and dancing to the altar is what makes wedding ceremonies personal, memorable and unique.

HeyGrooms

Don’t Say This During Wedding Planning! “Sounds good, whatever you think.”

If it only mattered what your bride thought, than she wouldn’t take the time to ask you for an opinion. Contrary to popular culture, most brides desperately want their groom more involved with the wedding planning. While there will be some aspects that you have less of any opinion than others, it is important to not fall mute for majority of the major decisions. After all, a wedding is the first step in your new life together and I’m betting you want to have a say in that.

“How much?!”

Constant criticism of how much is being spent really takes the fun out of planning a wedding for all parties involved, particularly your bride. Instead, map out a budget that you can both agree on for the wedding so you both have a clear understanding of how much money is being spent where. With financial woos the number one precursor for divorce; start off on the right foot.

“I’m really whipped... I just want to chill. Can all this planning stuff wait?”

Let me clarify... grooms get a hall-pass on this statement a couple times. By the third, fourth, every time we ask for help and you responsed with another excuse to postpone, our patience is wearing thin. Brides see a mountain of work ahead of them when it comes to all the details of a wedding. From decor to family drama to slimming down for our dream dress, we see our own sacrifice everywhere and need you to pitch in. After all, the wedding is for the both of us.

“Didn’t I mention that? I must have forgot.”

It is important that both bride and groom are kept in each other’s loop regarding the wedding, guest’s travel plans and Mom’s sudden one-eighty considering her help with the rehearsal dinner. A wedding can be a logistical nightmare and “forgetting” to mention vital details can derail a timeline and add a lot of undue stress to your bride. When you have new wedding information, make a point to share this with your fiancé, pronto. I’m betting there’s an app for that...

“This really doesn’t matter to me. I don’t want to help.”

Agreed, tying ribbons around hundreds of wedding programs or filling custom seed packets for favors may not be your cup of tea. But your bride is excited and loves the details that make your day personal and heartfelt, including those that are somewhat time-consuming. And when you love a person you do things that are not important to you because they matter to the person who matters most to you.

Weddings...The Pink Way! www.ThePinkBride.com

Danielle Spencer & James Copenhaver III July 23, 2011 Photography by Bamber Photography

First Glance: We had decided to do a first seeing with each other (This is not for everyone and is something that needs to be discussed beforehand). When I walked down the aisle it was so nerve racking, my heart was pounding. When he turned around he just started crying and of course I lost it, I would not have traded that moment for anything, it is something I will always remember. I also cried when i saw my dad for the first time. He was the first person I had seen other than my mom and my girls. He started to cry too, and I have only seen my dad cry a handful of times. I have always been a “daddy’s girl” so his thought in our special day was something that meant a lot to me. Wedding Details: We wanted something classic yet elegant. We mostly wanted things focused around our guests. I wanted my fiancee to have an input just as much as I did. We also included our mothers and made sure that everyone was happy with things that were picked out. We hired a wedding planner. I worked full time and am currently in the middle of Nursing school so I wanted as little to do with setting things up as possible. Our planners were great, they did just that. They took care of everything for us and we could not have had such a special day without them. Our colors were white and black with accents in orange. I have always wanted a black and white wedding, so classic and always timeless. My fiancee is a Tennessee fan and he wanted a white and orange wedding. My mom and thought “Really??” so we compromised, I got my black and white and he got his orange. It was perfect Marriage Advice: Do not be afraid to put your foot down on something you really want; but also realize that not every decision is something to get in an argument over. There were several things that I had no opinion on because honestly it didn’t matter to me, but it mattered to someone else. When that came up I let them choose, and it turned out perfect, I would not have changed a thing. Think really hard about what you really want, this day passes fast and is gone in an instant.

Allison McMahan & Nicholas LaPorta June 4, 2011

PHOTOGRAPHY BY Daisy Moffatt Photography

Allison McMahan & Nicholas LaPorta 06.04.11 The Big Day: I cried most of the day, out of joy, of course! One of my favorite moments besides the toasting was the dancing. Our friends from Atlanta, Chris Gaines, Josh Crane, Jason Sorrells, Ryan Bishop really tore up the dance floor. If you need someone to get the party started call Chris Gaines! Another memorable moment was when we walked into the reception and were introduced as Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas LaPorta for the first time. And lastly, walking out to the sparklers at the end of the night was so romantic and special for us. I am a perfectionist and I think I had everything planned out to my liking. The only problem that I wasn’t expecting, that I know of, was when my father forgot his tie and his suspenders, my father-in-law forgot his pants, and a groomsmen forgot his socks. But it all worked out in the end! Details: I am a simple, yet complex, and open person all at the same time. I envisioned my wedding in many different ways, but one thing that I kept going back to was to stay within the budget and to keep it simple. From the beginning I definitely knew that I wanted bright colors! For my colors I chose cream, silver, and kelly green. I used tree branches with dangling crystals for centerpieces to tie the colors together. In order to save money we decided not to hire a planner. I would have loved to have one, but luckily we had numerous family and friends that stepped up to the challenge. My mother, Debbie McMahan, did most of the planning since I live in South Carolina. My aunts Marie Camp and Bridget Davis, my grandmother Gena Davis, and my uncle Todd Davis did a lot of the work for us. They helped with showers, putting welcome bags together and even budget spreadsheets! Our family friends Cindy Clark, Betty Hubbs, and Eddie Etter have had children get married before so they jumped in to help with showers and anything else that we needed. The most important thing to me about the wedding was enjoying a moment with my husband as soon as we were married. After the ceremony we were tucked away in a side room to catch our breath and celebrate with our bridal party and family before pictures. It was so special! Nick and I are both very social and enjoy helping others feel comfortable, so we tried to make sure everyone was having a great time and dancing during our reception. We had a lot of outof-town guests and enjoyed giving them our undivided attention. We also had a photo booth to give our guests a special memory from our wedding day. Advice: The best advice that I can give to future brides and grooms is to not forget why you are planning the wedding in the first place! Stand your ground and try to do everything within reason. At the end of the day all that matters is to have whoever is most important to you at the ceremony and reception. No one cares what kind of wedding you have, as long as there is fun, laughter, love, and plenty of alcohol!

Payton Gordon & Marshal Castillo July 2, 2011 Photography by Amy Leigh Photography

THE Details: I was going for a southern, comfortable, laid back feel. Our colors were red and turquoise (our favorite colors together) which seems a little strange but it came together beautifully. We used a lot of browns and neutral colors and used the red and turquoise to give a pop of color. We had SO many projects which I have to thank my amazing mom and all my family and friends for helping out with. My mom’s friend Kate Rice made signs for the wedding, one saying I love you to Paris and back that hung above our cake. It was so cute! I had a favor party night where all my friends came over and helped! We had them making pom pom balls that hung from the ceiling, cutting out burlap fabric for signs that had our names on them, stuffing gumballs into cello wrap with bows and our sticker on the front, which were our favors, tying ribbon on mason jars, and gluing wooden flowers to them! It was a very productive party! I even had my grandpa cut a tree trunk, which was still in a circle, into thin pieces. These were our center pieces, along with mason jars, candles and wooden flowers! The day of the wedding we had so many helpers making everything come together, my grandmother made flower arrangements with old antique watering cans which turned out beautiful. We used a beige muslin fabric for our tables which were actually long wooden picnic tables and then we had burlap runners on top of them which turned out really neat. We had drinks in the back in an old wheel barrow. It was just little touches everywhere that made it so special! Loved it all! PLANNING: We were engaged for only six months. We got engaged in December and married in early July. We didn’t hire a planner but hired Many Daniels who made helped with ideas and decorating the day of the wedding. I used Etsy.com!! I Love that website and ordered a lot of things from for the wedding. I just had a lot of help from family and friends and with them it came together! The most important thing to me was that it be about Marshal and I and not all the crazy fuss that is put into weddings these days. I wanted it to be beautiful and special, but most of all, I wanted it to be about us and what we stood for as a couple. I wanted the ceremony to feel intimate and close and I think we did just that! Amy and David, with Amy Leigh Photography, were so amazing and such a sweet couple. They were always willing to work with our crazy schedule, they were fun to be with, not to mention, my pictures turned out amazing! Love them and would send anybody to them!

to Make the Most

WAYS

of Bridal Shows

Your engaged and now it is time to start planning… With so many things to see and vendors to talk to, wedding shows can be overwhelming and feel a bit like, well the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Savvy brides see through the chaos and make the most of what bridal shows have to offer by way of inspiration, advice and vendor giveaways. With these 7 tips, you can too!

•1•

Come Prepared. The boy scouts were on to something here… Make sure you have the essentials. Have a pen to take notes and sign up for all the wedding day give-aways. Better yet, pre-print mailing labels with your name, phone number, email and wedding date to save a ton of time. Also, remember to bring your camera to capture all the wedding inspiration on display… vendors are putting their best decorating foot forward and you will want to remember everything you saw.

•2•

Don’t eat (a lot!) before you come. Weddings have food and so do wedding shows. Caterers and bakers use this opportunity to showcase great samples of their food so hold off on lunch & come hungry!

•3•

Leave the little ones at home. Children have small attention spans and even with all the cake samples, will quickly lose interest becoming dead weight. It is distracting to have fussy or bored children (or adults!) in your party while you are walking the show floor and trying to talk with vendors. Think carefully about who will join you on wedding show day.

•4•

Do your homework. It’s worthwhile to familiarize yourself with the services you are still seeking, what questions to ask and who is exhibiting at the show. This helps to maximize the time you have at each booth which can sometimes be limited with busy shows and popular vendors. Having other details such as your wedding date or budget mapped out, are also helpful… you don’t want to fall in love with a vendor only to find out, that they are booked on your wedding date or out of your price range.

•5•

Come ready to make a deal. Many of the vendors will offer show-only discounts and specials for brides ready to book. If you have done your research and have your checkbook in hand, the savings will add up fast. Keep in mind that vendors are not as busy during the fashion show so if you have your dress, use this time to talk one-on-one.

•6•

These boots are made for comfort. Remember the show floor is big with lots of walking so leave the heels for later that night and wear comfy shoes!

•7•

FREE tickets! Many local vendors are given free show tickets to hand out to perspective brides that they would like to personally invite to the show. If you plan to set up meetings with vendors before the show, make sure to ask if they will have a booth and you just may get free tickets.

Margaret Chapin & Jon-Marc Haden February 26, 2011 Photography by Bamber Photography Planning: We were engaged for 5 months. My mom and I did most of the planning. She was amazing and a huge help. We relied on past experience and close friends to help the planning process go smoothly. Because I was not living at home we made a lot of decisions and didn’t look back. We just decided and then didn’t want to analyze it anymore. The photographs were very important to me--I wanted to be able to look back at the photos and see what everyone was doing during our reception. Bamber Photography was amazing; they were on top of every moment! I also wanted to be able to print my own photos without having to go through the photographer or a website. Thankfully Bamber offers packages where you can buy a disk of your photos at full resolution. We also loved the Photo Booth and the opportunity it gave our guests to be in pictures that we would see after the wedding. The Details: I love paper and invitations! For the save the dates, a friend in Austin screen printed the design for post cards. The design was based off of old Rock City brochure plates with a birdhouse. They were printed on cardboard in black and red. A close friend helped me do the design and thankfully used his Photoshop skills to get it just right! I found a calligrapher on Etsy who did calligraphy for my and Jon-Marc’s names and the rest of the invitation was typeset in print. I loved the color gray and used it for the ink on the wedding invitation and program and for the bridesmaids’ dresses. The dresses were charcoal and they each got to choose the style of their dress from Amsale. We ended up deciding to use a mixture of reds, crimsons, pinks, and some greens. With the dresses and the church, the flowers looked beautiful! Instead of chocolate cake we decided to have apple cobbler with vanilla ice cream! It was a fun little detail that everyone seemed to enjoy. Also, we passed around mini grilled cheeses and shot glasses of tomato soup--just a fun little appetizer to get the night started. We also had late night food come out--we wanted to stick with the southern theme and had pulled BBQ pork sliders with Fairyland fries, and cokes in glass bottles. It was a great snack after lots of dancing! I wanted to leave the reception in some kind of fur shrug so I found one on eBay for about $40! It was a cute old-fashioned addition.

Giselle Handal & Kevin Schultz July 24, 2011

PHOTOGRAPHY BY Dotson Studios

Giselle Handal & Kevin Schultz 07.24.11 The Big Day: The first thing in the morning my parents, brothers and sister came and piled up on my bed. It was great to have just a little bit of chill time with them before it all started. Then my brothers and I went for a 4 mile run. It was so nice to get the jitters out. We then had a fabulous girl’s breakfast. Then we did hair and makeup at my house with all the girls. I loved just being able to be at my house, in my pjs, hanging out with all the ladies of the family and bridesmaids. My favorite moment was my “First Look/Special Moment” with Kevin. It was just the two of us in the sanctuary. He had been standing and looking at the stained glass, facing away from the door. My wedding coordinator led me in, set up my dress and veil, turned on our favorite song, (The book of Love - Peter Gabriel) then told Kevin to count to ten and turn around. He did what he was told and when he turned around, so many emotions washed over me as I saw him standing there waiting for me, waiting to become my husband and being so incredibly excited about it. Words cannot describe what that moment meant to me as we shared all the joy together. My brothers officiated the wedding and did an absolutely fantastic job. They told our story in such a loving way and weaved it into the homily. It was such a fun and personal service, and there were many emotional tears shed. My favorite detail was flying away with Kevin on the plane; it was magical. Planning: My mom and my sister were the biggest help in planning it all out. I was overwhelmed but they kept me on track and were so very encouraging. I also had tons of help from my aunts and bridesmaids. They were great in sending me pictures of things they found online or just tidbits of advice they found. I did not hire a planner. My mom and I decided to go at it alone, which was stressful but we were able to find good deals and keep costs low without involving a planner fee. We used lots and lots of lists, timelines and guidelines to keep us on track. My colors were Black, White and Red. Budget Advice: I saved big on wedding invitations. I made sure to design something I liked, but not to spend a lot, since most people throw it out as soon as they receive it. I also saved huge on my wedding dress. I got exactly what I wanted at a fraction of the cost. My advice would be to just keep looking; keep your eye out for good deals and do a lot of research. I splurged on my shoes, because they made me feel fabulous and I splurged on my hair. I am always wrestling with it to do what I want, so I made sure that on the wedding day, it was done by a professional, who made it look exactly how I wanted it to. I didn’t ever have to worry or think about it the rest of the day.

Angelina Wallace & Mariano Cebrian May 15, 2010

PHOTOGRAPHY BY Shades of Grey Photography

Angelina Wallace & Mariano Cebrián 05.15.10 The Proposal: We planned a day trip to drive the Cherohala Skyway and Tail of the Dragon that runs through Tennessee and North Carolina one November afternoon. We stopped and looked at all the scenic overlooks and turn offs as we journeyed along. Around sunset, we arrived at one and decided to have our wine & cheese picnic we’d packed. It was on the side of a mountain overlooking a valley of mountains covered in fall colors. Mariano began reminiscing about the last five years we’d been together, which I just thought was wine & scenery talking. Enjoying the memories, I was completely surprised when he pulled out a ring, got on his knee & proposed. I couldn’t speak for a moment due to shock, but once I regained my voice I exclaimed, YES! He revealed he had another surprise. He’d booked us a romantic night stay at Blue Waters Mountain Lodge on Lake Santeetlah, NC. It was unbelievably perfect. Planning: We were engaged six months—and boy was that a crunch! I didn’t realize just how much went into wedding planning. My fiancée and bridesmaids were a huge help and very involved in the process. Photography was extremely important to me. Finding the right photographer to capture my day was one of my highest priorities, and Shades of Grey was my first choice. I was so grateful they were available for the photography and did such an amazing job. We also rented Lookout Lake Bed & Breakfast for the entire weekend. So, there was no curfew or time to cut the party off, which was very important to us. We come from backgrounds that view marriage as a true celebration, and one that requires a huge party full of dancing, good food and drinks with close family and friends. Renting the entire venue allowed us to house the bridal party, my parents and Mariano’s parents, along with relatives who flew in from Argentina, which was a big cost savings for them and made us feel really good. Everything was done at the venue—the low-key, southern inspired rehearsal dinner (catered by Sticky Fingers). It was extremely convenient to have everyone there and not having to worry about transportation or directions. Wedding Details: I like old Hollywood glamor and knew I wanted an outdoor wedding. So, I tried my best to combine a classy soiree with the casual feeling the outdoors brings. The location was simply breathtaking—right on a small lake overlooked by mountains. Our colors were red, champagne and black. Since it was a bilingual event, we also had icebreaker cards at all the tables with both basic and different, funny phrases in English and Spanish. Our ceremony was also performed in both English and Spanish–vows and all.

Wedding Details: I developed a love for vintage and antiques when I was younger and started collecting anything and everything I could carry home. I also grew up around the beautiful nature on the farm where our wedding was held. That country home has made me into the person I am today. I can see it in most everything that inspires me. Matthew also grew up around nature so it was an easy decision to have an outside wedding. I knew I wanted to incorporate all those items I collected over the years into a relaxed, country setting that the barn, house and fields gave off. We also wanted to be creative and make our day unique. We did have two main colors, navy and light yellow. But I didn’t want to stay boxed into a color scheme so we used colorful handkerchiefs on the tables, some antiques had different colors and some of the DYI projects added fun colors. The flowers which also swayed from the navy and blue color scheme helped tie everything together. We picked a few DIY projects I thought would tie into the whimsical, vintage theme. We chose to use hay bales to keep it relaxed and rustic, but placed family quilts and white sheets on them to keep it pretty. We made the chandeliers that hung in the barn by connecting spray painted Mardi-Gras beads to a hanging wire flower basket. We made little inserts to go with the invitations, hand drawn map and directions on how to get to the wedding site. Old and new pictures of me, Matthew and our family were hung in the center of the barn by twine. We made tissue pom-poms that hung throughout the reception area. My uncle made the large and small metal hooks that hung the lights and jars with candles in them. Advice: Pick something that matters to you the most and go for it. For us, it was our photographers. There are always ways you can save in other areas and you don’t want to kick yourself in the end. We decided early on that the photography was one of the most important things to us. Based out of our Dayton, we knew and loved Bamber Photography style. We chose to have both John and Lindsey to shoot they wedding and they did not disappoint! They made sure to communicate everything to us before the wedding and were very professional and organized during the wedding.

Courtney Lofty & Tim Canarela April 2, 2011

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DOTSON STUDIOS

Courtney Lofty & Tim Canarela 04.02.11 Love Story: We met through my step-brother Chance, who he met in the Marines. I love who he is as a person, he has such a wonderful personality that makes me laugh (and drives me crazy) constantly! Family is very important to the both of us, being around our family and starting one of our own. Being enlisted in the Marines means deployments. We got use to the distance but it’s very hard on a relationship... Getting through those shows how strong we are as a couple and I love that about us. Tim popped the question at Busch Gardens in Tampa, FL while we were visiting his family on pre-deployment leave. We were riding the train that takes you to see the animals around the park when his mom said “Courtney look over there!” When I saw nothing and turned back around, he was on one knee and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes and couldn’t stop crying. While going through a tunnel they announced and congratulated our engagement to the whole train and every one applauded. One of THE happiest moments of my life! The Big Day: I had such a sweet moment with my grandmother that morning when we just looked at each other and started tearing up. I had a realization that I wasn’t a little girl anymore; I was going to be married and I think she realized it to. I will never forget the feeling of walking down the aisle toward my future husband to a song we both love. It was such a special moment. I laughed a lot at the reception. It was quite the party and the dancing was hilarious! I cried so many happy tears that day. The tears were flowing during the father-daughter dance not only from my step-dad and I but from the whole room! We danced to “He didn’t have to be” by Brad Paisley, which describes our relationship perfectly. We had an unexpected guest that day…WIND and lots of it! I thought it might be cold or rainy that day, but I never expected all that wind! It made taking pictures outside a little difficult but they still turned out beautiful. I wanted a very classic wedding with contemporary touches. I knew exactly how I wanted it to look down to the very last detail. Our colors were chocolate brown, pewter, eggplant, and we later added fuchsia in the mix. I’m so thankful that my wedding planner and my mom made my dream wedding come true! Marriage and advice: Don’t sweat the small stuff. Things will fall into place so just enjoy every moment, it goes by way too fast! I didn’t realize how different we were until we moved in together. We are finding out a lot of things we didn’t know about each other (like learning about his video game obsession!) We disagree a lot, but it’s just the process of figuring each other out.

WEDDING VENDORS

You’ve got questions and I have answers to your most common questions when booking and working with your wedding vendors. Let’s cut through the red tape and get to planning! by Pink Lady Krista at ThePinkBook.com

1

I ‘m getting overwhelmed by all these wedding emails! What can I do?

2

Is it appropriate to let vendors know that you have booked someone else?

3

Is it true that vendors charge more when it’s a wedding?

4

First things first... set up a separate email account for your wedding planning. This will keep wedding emails separate from your personal account and once you’re married, you can simply stop checking it. Check out MyBridemail.com for a wedding specific email service. What not to do? Don’t report the email as spam unless you are sure that it is. If you no longer wish to receive emails from a vendor, simply unsubscribe from the email (at the bottom of nearly all email newsletters) or contact the vendor directly asking to be removed from their list. Reporting an email as spam can limit a vendor’s ability to email other brides and grooms that want the information.

Absolutely! Letting a vendor know that you have decided to go with another vendor is definitely a good idea. Not only will this stop email follow-up but vendors are able to release a date to other couples looking to book. Sending a short email will generally do the trick. If you feel so inclined, giving a reason on why they weren’t the right fit is normally appreciated as well. Professional wedding vendors want to know how they can better serve future brides and grooms!

The answer is often yes... and it should be. While this may not seem fair, the difference in the amount of work related to a wedding vs. other social functions or corporate events is fairly significant. Often an event of similar size and budget for a retirement party or family reunion will require a third of the email and phone correspondence compared to a wedding. Corporate clients are even less and rarely ask for tastings, multiple meetings outside business hours and numerous proposals adjustments. All this increases the overall time a vendor spends when working with brides and grooms and since time is money, weddings cost more. If this still doesn’t seem right, ask your vendors to explain why they charge more. Confident and professional vendors are happy to explain pricing so it makes sense to their clients. If not... go with a vendor that has fair pricing policies.

My wedding vendor is not returning my calls and I’m not happy with their services! Isn’t that a breach of contract? Ideally, no bride or groom should ever have to deal with a poor performance by a wedding vendor, during or after the planning process. While I am not a legal expert, I have been on the both sides of this fence. Before you do anything, take a good look at the contract and cancellation fees. While few contracts will address customer service, a client always reserves the right to cancel their agreement. This will likely result in a loss of your initial deposit and could send you on a frantic last minute hunt for a vendor. Instead, I suggest sitting down with your vendor for a heart to heart on your concerns. Stay calm and offer suggestions for how your problems can be addressed. Avoid being overly dramatic and attacking a vendor as it will get you nowhere, fast. If possible, ask to work with another employee that might better mesh with you personally or ask to speak with a general manager or owner. If no solution is in sight, follow your gut and find a new vendor. Better to lose a small deposit than have a wedding vendor disaster on your big day. Note: The closest your wedding day is, the higher the cancellation fee will likely be. Address your apprehensions when they occur, rather than wait until a budget crunch leaves you little option other than to hope things will work out. Small Claims Court can be some help here but probably not in time for wedding day.

Kristi Johnson & Jake Brumbelow July 9, 2011 Photography by Dotson Studios

Wedd ing Planning: Jake and I were engaged for 14 months. I would advise not to be engaged that long, simply because the planning doesn’t take that long. I did not start planning until 8 months before. My mom was a tremendous help. Without her, the wedding could not have been done. I was living in West Virginia and planning a wedding in Georgia. Needless to say, I needed my mom. My venue had a day of wedding planner, which is a must! I did not have to worry or think about to dos on my wedding day! For my wedding inspiration, I used the internet and wedding magazines. The most important thing about my wedding was the overall feel and the experience all my guests would have. My vision was to have an elegant and classy wedding with vibrant colors. My colors were a grape purple with orange. It was easy to bring everything to life because I know what I like. My one DIY project were my fan programs. It was a good experience and made me feel crafty! We ran into paper problems, but eventually it worked out for the better. We had late nights with the programs, but in the end peeking out the window from my bridal room and seeing the guests fan themselves was great!

Big Day: My wedding day could not have been more perfect. I started out the day with Amanda, my bridesmaid, making breakfast for me and spending quality time with all my bridesmaids. When my bridesmaids and I arrived at the Tate House, I took it all in, the flowers, the rows of chairs, the altar, the beautiful weather, and the fact that I was committing my life to the man I love that day. The most memorable moments have to be when I was walking down the aisle with my dad, saying my vows to Jake and the reception toasts. The wedding toasts were very genuine and made me cry. It was great to hear the love and support from my best friend, Jake’s best friend and my dad. One unexpected thing that happened at my wedding, was Jake did a nice lap dance ending with the splits for my garter toss song! It was great, people were raving about his skills and entertainment! Overall, my wedding day was more than I ever expected. The amount of love from family and friends was a feeling we will never forget!

Stephanie Ashby & Ricky Honeycutt November 13, 2010

PHOTOGRAPHY BY Amy Leigh Photography

Stephanie Ashby & Ricky Honeycutt 11.13.10 The Proposal: We were in Park City Utah on a ski trip. After our first day skiing, we were taking the lift back to the resort and he got down on one knee and proposed. I was in shock. All that was running through my head was “this is not really happening.” I don’t think I ever really said yes, just gave more of a nod. His family was waiting for us at the bottom of the lift to celebrate. Wedding Details: I had seen pictures of a yellow and gray wedding, long before I was engaged, and I loved how it looked. I kept saying I wanted a simple, yet elegant wedding, with a modern feel. I knew what I wanted, it was just a matter of finding the pieces to put it together. The florist and my sister decided on the flowers (all of which were yellow.) Luckily the Fairyland Club is such a beautiful building that I didn’t have to do too much to it. Big Day: I laughed and enjoyed the entire day, but the one thing that stands out was at the beginning of the ceremony. The bridal party was walking down, and I was waiting. It was just me and the flower girl; she turned around and gave me the biggest smile and a thumbs up. The most important thing about my wedding was my 7 year old daughter. It was very important to me for the day to be as special for her as it was for Ricky and I. I think we succeeded. Ricky gave my 7 year old daughter a necklace as part of the ceremony and I cried. Advice: The best advice I can give is to try to not get caught up in all of the small details. There is definitely a lot that goes into planning a wedding, but on a lot of things I found myself thinking, “does this really matter?”. At the end of the day, your guests aren’t going to notice if you did or didn’t do something; they are there for you. Mr. & Mrs.: We have really enjoyed just living life together as a couple, and all the ups and downs that come along with it. We didn’t live together before, so we have had to learn how to combine our lives. It’s been great!
