Elizabeth Scaperoth & Daniel Wiseman 05.14.11 Love Story: For Daniel and I to end up together, the timing had to be just right. We grew up just a few miles from one another and had a lot of the same friends, but we somehow never crossed paths. My best friend introduced us by saying, “you guys already know each other, right?” We both knew something was different right away, but neither of us was looking for someone. In fact, I had a nomination to the Peace Corps, and I thought I would be in the Ukraine for 2 years, so the LAST thing I needed was a new relationship! The crazy thing is, I think that somehow allowed us to end up as partners for life. We treated the relationship casually at first because I was leaving, allowing us to be uncharacteristically open with each other. I ended up choosing him over the Ukraine, and I don’t regret it for a second. He’s my favorite person in the whole world and makes me laugh every minute I’m with him. The day he asked me to marry him was one of the most amazing days of my life. I had just arrived home from a trip so I was blindsided! In front of a fountain in St Louis he got down on one knee and presented me with the most amazing ring. It’s an antique wedding band with an inscription on the inside from the original couple it belonged to. It says “FG to AP 4-17-31.” I love wearing a ring that represents someone else’s love as well as ours. The Details: I am a pretty crafty person so I wanted to do a lot of things myself. I wanted a rustic but elegant aesthetic that would fit well with the beauty of the botanical gardens. We really didn’t decorate for the ceremony at all because the grounds are so lovely. My aunt made a wreath of baby’s breath for my flower girl’s head and that was enough for me. For the reception, I focused most of my decor on the tables which consisted of mixed milk glass vases that I collected over the year, burlap table cloths, vintage doilies and some wooden elements. I had my friends Sara Kate and Aliya put together the centerpieces the day of. They bought the flowers and just intuitively created the beautiful vignettes that I couldn’t have been more happy with. They even spread my late grandmother’s collection of buttons around the centerpieces. It was beautiful. My favorite space in the whole reception was a seating area my dad created by using stumps for chairs (brought from his house). The cozy spot was surrounded by twinkle lights hanging between wooden posts he had made. I wasn’t concerned with every little detail, but instead I tried to create a really memorable, but easy space.

Brandy Luttrell & Joshua Joslin July 1, 2011 Ceremony and Recpetion Location The Lodge at Valley View Love Story: Our love story starts way back... 1993 to be exact. It was the third grade water fight at my elementary school and this girl needed a super soaker! My mom managed to borrow one from a friend of a friend. When I was “forced” to return the water gun, it was to Josh. Unfortunately for him, I chased him around our community pool that summer and the 5 summers to follow. All of my hard work finally paid off when he became my first real boyfriend during our freshman year of high school. As time went on, we remained friends and stood by each others side through all of life’s curves and after 10 years of friendship we began dating once more; only this time he became my husband! The Big Day: It was very important for us to keep our wedding small. We wanted to make sure we could spend time with our families and speak to everyone who came out to celebrate with us. Incorporating our families was a theme throughout the day and celebrating life lost was probably the most emotional of the day. Instead of a bridal bouquet, I carried a locket with a picture of my grandfather and Josh’s mother. It was strung around a flower during the ceremony so they could watch right along with everyone else. Once we were husband and wife, the party began and so did the laughs. Watching our grandparents get up and dance was definitely something we will never forget. After the reception was over, our parents, grandparents, Josh and I got changed and sat in the venue eating leftovers and telling stories. I think for both of us this was the one of the most memorable parts of the entire day - beginning married life side by side, surrounded by the people we love most. Since we decided to keep the wedding small, we definitely wanted an at home type feel. We used various shades of orange and yellow in our arrangements and a little raspberry (to match my shoes)! Almost everything in our wedding was homemade. All the flower arrangements were made by my mom, my best friend and I the morning of the wedding. Our wedding day budget was $5,000 with a guest list of 75. We saved quite a bit by having our wedding on a Friday and by completing a lot of tasks on our own. We purchased all the flowers from Krogers for $125 and made arrangements ourselves (and we had flowers everywhere)! Marriage Advice: It is true that the day is over before you realize it. Don’t get caught up in small details that really don’t matter. When I signed the contract with the venue I wrote “I promise not to be a difficult bride” and I tried to stick to it. In the end, it’s about the committment, not where your cake table is or what shade of pink you picked out.

Courtney Laster & Christopher Redd 07.24.11 love story: We were introduced by a mutual friend at a cookout. Several months passed before our first date. More dates quickly followed. We had a long distance relationship for 4 and a half years, until Chris moved to Tennessee. Marriage was always a plan for our future, we just had to figure out the finances to make it possible. Chris finally got the ring and proposed in one of our favorite places, walking along the Hiwassee River. Little did we know, the wonderful wedding that was in store for us. We went to the Pink Bridal Show in Chattanooga, and registered to win a dream wedding package from Castleton Farms. We won, and our lives were changed forever!! the big day: Darla Walker was amazing! This was the most stress free day a couple could ever ask for, and it is all thanks to the vendors that put our wedding together. The most memorable moment for me, as a bride, was our first glance. I would recommend this to anyone. It calmed my nerves, and let me spend a few quiet moments alone with my soon-to-be husband. For Chris, it was when he saw me coming down the aisle towards him. He says that he will never forget the look on my face. Rain started moving in late in the evening, but Darla was prepared, and got everyone together for the fireworks show before the rain came. Our reception was so much fun. All Occasion’s food was incredible, and everyone actually got enough, which is a rarity at weddings, we think. Ogle Entertainment made sure we danced, laughed, and sang the night away until our big firework and sparkler filled send off. It all went by much faster than seems possible, people tell you that your big day will be a blur, and its true! Thankfully we had Bill and Perry from Waldorf Photographic Art to capture our big day for us! The pictures are beautiful, and our albums will make a lifelong treasure from our big day. the details: Our theme was peacock feathers, green and blue. Sam Franklin really made this come to life for us, with life sized peacocks! He perfectly tied together the flowers, decorations, and color scheme throughout our entire event. He coordinated with the party rentals and Darla, at Castleton, to make sure our theme was carried through everything. It was so much more than we imagined, or dreamed of. Jamie Walker, of Bangs and Blush, even made sure our makeup matched the colors! It was great, we all felt and looked beautiful. We really felt like we were waiting for the other shoe to drop, after we won this wedding. We kept waiting for the catch, but it never came. It truly was what it seemed to be. We are so greatly blessed that we won this wedding, and so thankful to everyone involved. We will never forget this extraordinary experience, and will never be able to thank everyone involved enough!

love story: We met through the University of Tennessee Swim Club when Anna entered college as a freshman. The first time we talked was at the swim club picnic (something the swim club does to meet the students who are interested in joining the team). There was only one other conversation between us before Garrett asked me out to breakfast and we’ve been together ever since. Garrett is the man I always hoped to marry. He is so genuine and kind hearted - the only person I’ve met who constantly gives more than he takes. He is level headed, cautious, and extremely good at math while I tend to be a spontaneous, passionate person that loves the arts. We have been best friends from the start and can not imagine a life without one another or each other’s families. the big day: In truth- I had no idea I would be so emotional at the wedding. I cried the moment I saw this older couple who have been like grandparents to me my entire life, I cried when I saw Garrett in our first look photo sessions, I cried the entire way down the aisle, and I cried in the receiving line. - It was all happy tears of course! I was simply overcome with joy and thankfulness for the day and everyone there. I will always remember our first look session and spending time with Garrett before the ceremony started. I would not have done it any other way. One of the best parts of the ceremony was when we jumped the broom and the best man, Bobby Taylor, did a huge fist-pump at the same time. Jennie showed us the picture of it all and we could not stop laughing! There were several unexpected moments that daythe most memorable being the reverend saying “I now pronounce you one hundred and one----I mean HUSBAND and wife!” Marriage and advice: Keep true to your vision and don’t let tradition or other people’s expectations hinder it. I am being completely honest when I say (and I’m sorry if any future brides find this upsetting) that life after a wedding is somewhat anticlimactic. Don’t get me wrong, marriage is absolutely amazing- but real life starts as soon as you get home from the honeymoon. It’s hard to make the transition from planning/ experiencing your dream day as a bride and then waking up a normal person the next day. You cannot have expectations of marriage being all roses and fluffy clouds- but rather take it one day at a time, enjoying each moment as it comes. You have to remember to look past the routine of everyday life to discover the love that brought you together in the first place.

Don’t Say This During Wedding Planning! “Sounds good, whatever you think.”
If it only mattered what your bride thought, than she wouldn’t take the time to ask you for an opinion. Contrary to popular culture, most brides desperately want their groom more involved with the wedding planning. While there will be some aspects that you have less of any opinion than others, it is important to not fall mute for majority of the major decisions. After all, a wedding is the first step in your new life together and I’m betting you want to have a say in that.
“How much?!”
Constant criticism of how much is being spent really takes the fun out of planning a wedding for all parties involved, particularly your bride. Instead, map out a budget that you can both agree on for the wedding so you both have a clear understanding of how much money is being spent where. With financial woos the number one precursor for divorce; start off on the right foot.
“I’m really whipped... I just want to chill. Can all this planning stuff wait?”
Let me clarify... grooms get a hall-pass on this statement a couple times. By the third, fourth, every time we ask for help and you responsed with another excuse to postpone, our patience is wearing thin. Brides see a mountain of work ahead of them when it comes to all the details of a wedding. From decor to family drama to slimming down for our dream dress, we see our own sacrifice everywhere and need you to pitch in. After all, the wedding is for the both of us.
“Didn’t I mention that? I must have forgot.”
It is important that both bride and groom are kept in each other’s loop regarding the wedding, guest’s travel plans and Mom’s sudden one-eighty considering her help with the rehearsal dinner. A wedding can be a logistical nightmare and “forgetting” to mention vital details can derail a timeline and add a lot of undue stress to your bride. When you have new wedding information, make a point to share this with your fiancé, pronto. I’m betting there’s an app for that...
“This really doesn’t matter to me. I don’t want to help.”
Agreed, tying ribbons around hundreds of wedding programs or filling custom seed packets for favors may not be your cup of tea. But your bride is excited and loves the details that make your day personal and heartfelt, including those that are somewhat time-consuming. And when you love a person you do things that are not important to you because they matter to the person who matters most to you.

Amelia Johnson & Joshua Peterson 05.21.11 Love Story: Josh and I met in college, he was a grad student and I was getting my BFA. We both studied theater in a fairly close-knit arts program, so it wasn’t long before we noticed each other. Josh came to see a show I directed and was hooked. He asked me out for coffee to “talk about the show” and before I knew it we were dating. Five years later, after a hopeless break-up and a slow rekindling of friendship and finally love, Josh asked me to marry him at sunset on the Brooklyn Bridge. I’m really glad I said yes. So is he. The Big Day: We awoke that morning to a beautiful day that led to an even more beautiful ending. It was so easy and peaceful and full of love and laughter. My favorite moment of the day was taking communion with Josh. After we had said our vows, we knelt on a 100 year old quilt from my mother’s family with a loaf of bread my father had baked and took communion together. I remember being overwhelmed with gratitude for my new husband, a man who loved God first and loved me next and who was committing his life to doing both well. Our theme words were whimsy, magic, vintage, warm, bright and home. We wanted the wedding to be about our guests. Making it fun for them. Bringing them into our home and welcoming them into our story. If it weren’t for our community and our desire for our marriage to be made stronger by our friendships, we would have eloped. So, if the wedding was because of them, we wanted to make it about them. We also needed their help to pull it all off! Our friends helped create our invitations, bake our pies, clean and decorate our home, fill our ceremony with music, and fill our wedding with flowers and lots of color. Wedding Advice: When planning your wedding, be sure to keep asking yourself “Why are we having a wedding?” If you keep returning to this question, your priorities will become very clear. And don’t be afraid to ask for help! You’d be surprised how many people will come through for you when you make the need known. The best advice I heard before my wedding was to enjoy and receive! The best gift you can give everyone around you is to enjoy all that you are given. Your job as the bride is to open your hands and receive.

Meaghan Ruppert & John Roethlisberger 09.24.11 The Big Day: It was an emotional day! I cried when John and I had our “first look,” when my dad saw me for the first time, when I walked down the aisle, during my vows (just a little :) ). Oh and I definitely cried during one of my favorite moments of the night. After the toasts (which were just awesome), Johnny surprised me by playing me a song on the guitar with our bandleader. He had spent the last few months learning “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton. Our bandleader Dave sang it while Johnny played it. I will never EVER forget that moment. It was so special because he has now played for me twice, once for the proposal and once at our wedding. The details: I guess I could describe my vision (or theme) as “rustic elegance.” I’m not frilly or over-the-top, and I love a natural look, but I wanted it to still have an elegant feel. Sandi helped me bring my vision to life through the whole process. One of the very first things she thought of was to make homemade mason jar candles to place around the venue. Since it was an evening wedding, we wanted LOTS of candlelight. So I ordered 350 mason jars, 100 lbs of wax, and wicks, and Johnny and I spent hours upon hours in our kitchen making candles. It was time-consuming, but we had so much fun making them together, and they were absolutely gorgeous at the wedding. We used them as our wedding favors, and let everyone take a candle home to have as a momento of our day. Other than that, I guess you could call all of the flowers DIY, since Sandi created all of the bouquets and centerpieces herself. It was the first time she had ever made bouquets, and they were the most beautiful I’ve ever seen! I also made our ceremony programs. I ordered the outside shells from minted.com, and then created the inserts myself and binded them together with twine. That wasn’t a quick little process either! Also, we had 6 chalkboards at the wedding that my friend painted for me. 4 of them had quotes/song lyrics that we love on them, 1 was for the memory table, and one was for the bar. She also painted a large stand-up board for the entrance to our wedding. As far as our colors, I didn’t necessarily have set colors that I planned everything around. My bridesmaid’s dresses were “wine”, and the groomsmen tuxes had “latte” colored vests and ties with their black tuxes (the latte was kind of like a tan/brown). Flower girls wore champagne dresses with chocolate sashes. We also incorporated ivory, brown, sage green into the wedding.

Our love story: I knew I loved him after three weeks meeting him. I was on the phone with my friend and I told her I thought he was the one. I think I knew I loved her when I asked her to be my girlfriend the day after Valentine’s day (2007). the proposal: Our proposal wasn’t super romantic, but it was still a sweet day. We were in NYC visiting our friend Beth and we had spent the day at the Natural History Museum and then we stumbled on the Imagine memorial for John Lennon in Central Park on John’s birthday. We then went to have dinner at Beth’s restaurant and somehow marriage came up in our conversation and we decided it was time. I told Michael I didn’t believe him unless he told Beth. I came back from the restroom and Beth was at our table and when I sat down he told her we were engaged! The Big Day: Walking down the aisle with both of my parents and then seeing Michael look like he was about to cry was the most emotional part of my day. For Michael is was watching me walk down the aisle with my parents. Walking away from the ceremony to the Beatles song The Two of Us with everyone throwing flowers at us! It started to rain during our pictures before the wedding and everyone was worried it would rain during the ceremony. We had to make the call to either move the wedding to the pavilion or chance it and leave the chairs where they were. We decided to chance it, and we are very glad we did because it didn’t rain again at all that day! DIY projects: A LOT! So much of our wedding was done by hand! Almost all of our decorations were made by Michael & I with the help of family and friends. I made the Mr. & Mrs. Banner and both of my garters. favorite thing about planning your wedding: How simple it was. We really didn’t fret about little details that wouldn’t matter in the end. best thing about the whole day: Walking away from the ceremony to the Beatles song The Two of Us with everyone throwing flowers at us!

Maci Stephens & Chad O’Connor 09.24.11 Love story: We met as sophomores in high school at a mutual friend’s house. We went up to Tremont on my birthday, to a place along the river we used to go with friends back in high school. We were walking along the river and next thing I knew, he was down on one knee. I remember him asking “Will you marry me” and saying “yes, absolutely,” but the rest was a blur! We did get it on camera though because he had our sisters up on the bridge over the river secretly taking pictures and videoing the whole thing!! The Details: I knew I wanted fall colors but not just oranges, reds, and yellows. I loved the eggplant color and thought the spice orange added the perfect touch of autumn! I did lots of little DIY projects! I love doing crafty things and it was really important to us to have some special personal touches to everything. We chose the carriage house at Castleton Farms because it fit the classy vintage feel I dreamed of. I literally knew from the first time I saw it, which wasn’t “in person” that I wanted it there and seeing it just confirmed it. It is an absolutely beautiful place that is so accommodating with wonderful staff and vendors so I knew it would be none less than perfect! I found my dress at White Lace and Promises here in Knoxville with my mom, sister, and one of my best friends Allison. The dress I chose was the second dress I tried on and I knew it was the one when I didn’t really have any desire to try on anything else. I humored the idea of at least trying on a few more, but quickly put “the dress” back on. It was a for sure thing! I chose my photographer Bill Waldorf after seeing albums and trailers that Waldorf Photographic Art had created, it was a done deal to me! They really do an amazing job of capturing all those special little moments and details that make the photographs more than pictures, they are lasting memories. Our send off was something that was unremarkably special to us! We left our reception, in front of the Castleton Farm Mansion, in a helicopter. It was one of those moments that I can’t even put into words. Leaving our reception seeing our family and friends waving below while I gripped Chad’s hand so tightly in excitement his fingers were almost purple was a moment I will never forget, and thankfully the pictures from inside the helicopter captured it all!!

our love story: Grant’s godparents and my parents are good friends, so one night over dinner the four of them discussed introducing us to each other to see if we would be compatible. We went on a blind date that lasted 3 hours and that night was quickly followed up by several other lengthy dates. Needless to say there was definitely a connection! After about ten months, it was obvious that we had something worth holding onto when, while taking a walk one day, we stumbled upon a stately victorian house in Old North Knoxville. We snooped around the house and immediately saw visions of what it would be like to live together in such a big and beautiful place. That Spring, the vision became a reality as Grant closed on the house almost exactly a full year after our first date. As I was helping him move boxes into the house I noticed a little black box above the mantle. As I curiously asked about the strange box, Grant walked up, grabbed it from my hands and proposed by saying “I love you and I want to make this house our home, together. Will you marry me?” the big day: The big day was perfect. The weather was sunny and warm, and we were surrounded by all of our friends and family. While the time leading up to the ceremony was filled with nervous energy, once we stood next to each other at the altar, there was all of sudden a calmness that took over. We both couldn’t stop smiling and I think it was the happiest either one of us had ever bee wedding details: Our initial vision for the wedding was vintage and eclectic. But when we finalized the skybox at Neyland Stadium as the reception location that vision changed. Our church is absolutely beautiful with old, stained glass and classic brick and woodwork, so there wasn’t much in the way of decorating there. The skybox also had some neat design of its own, but we added some subtle details to warm it up. The reception was decorated in purely white flowers to soften the masculine feel. advice for brides-to-be: My advice for brides is to not do a quick engagement if you are a perfectionist. You’ll make yourself crazy! A one year engagement was perfect for us. It gave us time to really focus on each detail one at a time and look at different options, not settling just because we had to make a decision quickly. I would also encourage couples to make a list of everything they will be spending money on and prioritize what is the most important to them on their big day and adjust their budget accordingly.

Susan Turner & Michael Haynes 08.06.11 Love Story: Michael and I met at a bonfire on Halloween night. I moved from Tennessee to D.C. about a year earlier to go to graduate school, and Michael had moved to D.C. from Texas about two weeks before we met. I snapped him up before any other girl had the chance! Michael proposed after we had been dating a year and a half. It was the year of the “100 year snow” up in D.C. and he kept waiting for the weather to get warmer! Finally, the first day the sun broke through, March 6, 2010, we met up at our favorite farmer’s market. Michael put signs all around the park with scripture on them and he made a book of the memories we had together. It was extremely thoughtful and special. Afterward, we strolled through the farmer’s market together and the vendors congratulated us with free produce! Wedding Details: Since it was an August wedding by the lake, blue and yellow made sense to me. I incorporated books, because Michael and I are both still in graduate school, and we lived apart for a year for me to finish up my doctorate and him to begin his Physician’s Assistant program. We also had a huge dictionary replace the traditional guestbook. We asked guests to circle the word that reminded them of us. We will keep that dictionary forever, and it is always wonderful to be surprised by someone’s signature and note in the margins. Big Day: It was early August when Michael and I got married and we anticipated having our ceremony outdoors, so, naturally, I was concerned about the heat and the comfortability of our friends and family. Luckily, though, it misted all day, and stopped right before the ceremony. It left all the leaves and grass with dew and the light danced off of it all in a most heavenly way. It was breathtaking. Michael and I chose to do a “first look” and have our pictures taken together prior to the ceremony. During the session, our photographer said she wanted us to play a game and for Michael to try and kiss me and for me not to let him. (The object was to get cute kissing/ dipping pictures.) Michael took the game quite seriously. He tackled me to the ground! So here I am, right before the ceremony, laying on the wet grass in my white ground with my soon-to-be-husband on top of me. It was priceless! My photographer gasped and I was too busy laughing to notice! It took a few minutes for Michael to pick the grass out of my hair afterward, but the pictures are hysterical and are some of my favorites. Marriage Advice: Michael began his medical rotations right after we returned from our honeymoon, and I began a new job and began work on my dissertation. We both worked long hours, but, in the end, we were simply overjoyed to get to experience everyday life with oneanother - especially after being a part for over a year. My advice would be to treasure every moment spent - even doing laundry together, because it is time no one else gets to share.

love story: Tyler loves all things Christmas, and he had wanted to see the Biltmore at Christmas for years. So I wasn’t surprised he wanted to visit The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC in December 2010. Tyler wanted to take a picture by the giant Christmas tree on the front lawn. Since we were the only people there to brave the cold, the plan was for me to take his picture, then we would switch, and he would take my picture, then we would take one together with an out stretched arm. But we didn’t get to my turn! As I went to hand him the camera (so he could take my picture), he spun me around (it was very icy), we kinda switched places, and he got down on one knee!! I remember thinking and trying so hard to remember EVERYTHING he was saying, but I guess the adrenaline was flowing because I can hardly remember anything but his smiling face & him saying he couldn’t wait another second. (Luckily he remembers exactly what he said, and promises to write it down for me.) Then he asked me to marry him and then I said YES! The wedding planning process: We were only engaged for 6 months. I am in graduate school & there was only 1 day in all of 2011 that would work with our schedule. With our relatively short engagement & me being a full time student, I had LOTS of help from wonderful friends & family. My classmates had a “water bottle party” to assemble all of the personalized water bottle labels. My bridesmaid Leslie made all of the white & green wedding signs, & the slideshow. My aunts created flower arrangements for showers, luncheons, & the rehearsal dinner. Amazing aunt Marti brought beautiful sunflowers from her own garden in Statesboro, GA. Aunt Marti also arranged the candy bar, gave us endless pointers, inspiration, support, & was there every step of the way. The wedding budget: We had a conservative budget, but I knew I would splurge on the dress, the photography, & the video . The dress because I love fashion, the photography & video because that is all you have to remember the day for the rest of your lives. I am so so so pleased with how it all turned out!! Marriage and advice: Marriage has been wonderful, you will love it! It’s like a slumber party every night with your best friend.

Ashley Jones & Justin Tackett 09.15.11 The Story: We actually met over Myspace! Ha! We met in person on September 15, 2006. Justin came into town for a concert and we have pretty much been inseparable ever since. He has the most precious face and the sweetest smile I have ever seen. He is always smiling! He proposed to me in his living room floor. We were sitting on the couch watching a movie. He pulled a little ring box out from under the couch and asked me to be his wife. I cried so hard and obviously said yes! DIY: I was really inspired by rustic, laid back, vintage weddings. I knew for sure that I wanted to have hay bales for ceremony seating, a paper bouquet, a wooden cupcake stand, and a tea length lace dress. Other than that, we just found things we liked along the way and, one way or another, made them happen. Our wedding was 90% DIY. I made the banners for our chairs, the gifts banner, the heart garland for the alter, Justin’s boutonniere, little corsages for our mothers, our guestbook, the seating chart, confetti and cones, my bouquet, etc. I started working on the paper flowers for my bouquet probably the week we got engaged and finished it pretty early on. With help from a few girlfriends, we hand made the rest of the flowers for the tables. The day before the wedding, we picked a couple different kinds of wild flowers (probably considered weeds!) as filler for the vases at the tables, and I purchased dried craspedias because I love them so much. Wedding Details: I knew from day one that I wanted to use Dixie Pixel. I have known Tara for a few years now, and she is wonderful to work with. During the countdown to the wedding, no matter how busy she was with other things, she always made me feel like I was the most important bride in the whole world. She was part photographer/part friend/part wedding planner to me! She did an incredible job of capturing so many wonderful moments that we can always look back on and remember how we felt at that time. I can never thank her enough. We are both vegetarian, so we knew we wanted an all vegetarian/ vegan menu. The moment we decided on using a caterer instead of our original plan of preparing the food ourselves (one of the best choices we made), I emailed Bettina to set up a a time to discuss prices and menu options. She listened to the things we did and did not want and came up with an absolutely DELICIOUS menu that our friends and family could not stop talking about! It was such a blessing to work with so many of our friends.

Wedding Planning: We chose to have our wedding date exactly one year after he proposed. We felt this would allow sufficient time to plan and enjoy the engagement and provide more significance to the date. However, being natural born procrastinators, we didn’t technically get started until 5 months out from the date! The process was slightly stressful as to be expected, but unbelievably rewarding when experiencing the final product. Perry’s mother and sister were absolute life savers! Each helped to hold a fire under our behinds to assure the necessary tasks were completed. Darla Walker was a major help! We could not have done it without her expertise!

Planning the bridal portrait was also tons of fun! We knew from the beginning that Bill Waldorf would not disappoint, and he didn’t! He came up with the idea of hiking the Chimney Tops in the Smoky Mountains. Bill, Perry, Lindsey Smyre (Perry’s sister), and I climbed 2 miles up a rock face carrying makeup, bouquet, dress, and photo equipment. We took the portrait at sunset as Perry hid behind a rock, so not to see me in my dress, and hiked all the way back in the dark. It was A LOT of work but totally worth it! That’s a story for the grand kids! The most important thing to us about our wedding, other than the obvious nuptials...was hands down the experience with our family! The support from our family and friends was unshakeable...they stood behind our union 100%! Your Vision: Our vision was to get married. We didn’t really care about the details. The only things we knew we had to have was Waldorf Photographic Art to capture what was most important to us: our and our loved ones emotion on this day. Perry insisted on the band, The Bearded. People are still taking about how much they enjoyed the music! Lastly, we wanted a photobooth! If was a fun way for guests to interact and the way Waldorf Photographic Art treats it is completely different from the rest. You have the remote control to fire the images and can fit large groups. So much fun!

The Proposal: We took a trip to Biltmore in Ashville, NC just as a day trip. It was my 1st time to Biltmore. After walking around for a little bit he asked if there was anything that I would like to do. Typical girl answer yes I picked a private carriage ride around the estate. Well I thought I picked it he had set everything up weeks before. At the end of our ride we stopped at the lagoon were through the trees you could see the house. We were taking some pictures and he asked me if I was having a good day? I remember saying that I was having a blast. Then I asked him if he was having a good day? He said, “Yeah but I think that one thing could make it perfect.” Pulling the ring out of his pocket then he said”If you would spend the rest of your life with me.” I was shocked...this was the last thing i though would happen today. But my answer was immediate “YES!” That same day was my grandmother birthday and we were able to celebrate with our family. The Details: We really didn’t have a theme. Brent and I are casual people and we love our families. We wanted something that was us and I think that we got it. We just picked the things that we liked. I remember asking Brent which one of something he thought was “me.” He said if you pick it out then it is you. So we just ran with that thought. My dad and I made our reception signs, my made all the food, we did the music for the ceremony, and we made the programs. One of my favorite DIY projects was putting together bags of smore’ ingredients for the fire pit. We wanted something for the kids that were coming....but to be honest most of the adults loved them just as much. You have to know that we are big UT fans. And I wanted a fall wedding. So knowing ahead of time we would be planning around football season. Our favorite color is orange but it can be kinda loud but when used as an accent to the grey and white it really pops. Planning advice: It is a special day but don’t let yourself get so stressed that you can’t enjoy it. Also remember it is day one. We feel that there is a difference in a good wedding day and a good marriage. And we know that you can have both!

Carrie Edwards & Tyler Bush 06.04.11 Engagement Story: We got engaged on a Wednesday evening at Disney World in Orlando, FL. Along with a few friends, we took a trip to Disney for a week on vacation. Before dinner reservations, I asked Carrie to take a walk on the beach towards the “sand bar” with me where I would plan my attack. I did not know what a sand bar was, but it got her moving. When we approached the only tree on the beach, I turned to Carrie and said “Well, I guess this is where it is going to happen”. I dropped to one knee, grabbed Carrie’s hand, and began telling her my most inner feelings about her. With a smile on Carrie’s face as well as a look of confusion, I pulled out the ring and asked her to marry him. It was an immediate “YES!” and engaged we were! Wedding Details: My mom was incredible throughout the whole process. She put so much time, energy, and heart into planning our wedding. I was planning a wedding in Knoxville while living, working, and attending my first year of grad school in Charlotte, NC so to say she was priceless is an understatement. She did so much and was determined to make it my dream come true and she certainly succeeded. I am not the girl who has had their wedding planned since I was five so starting the process was a little difficult for me because I didn’t know where to begin. The few things I knew I wanted was an outside reception, the color purple, lots of lights/candles, and a meaningful ceremony. Maple Grove Inn was the perfect location for the outside requirement. We had our rehearsal dinner on one side of the lawn, had the ceremony outside on the courtyard, and the reception outside under a tent. We had tons of tea lights scattered around, Chinese lanterns, Christmas lights, a couple of chandeliers, and pillar candles inside hurricane vases on some of the tables. The only DIY project I did was the invitations. With my sister-in-law’s help, we formatted the invitations and then printed them off. My colors were royal purple, royal blue, and off white. Lisa Foster did a FABULOUS job of displaying these colors in my flower arrangements the whole weekend, they were exquisite!. The most important thing to me about our wedding was making it personal. I didn’t want it to feel stuffy or ritualistic. I wanted it to feel comfortable and fun but also beautiful and elegant. I felt like, looking back, that between our different family and friends there were no strangers and we were all having the time of our lives.

Kendra tilley & cody jones 08.27.11 our love story: We met in college, we had a class together and had mutual friends. We are the perfect match because he always knows exactly what to say to make me feel better. We have the most fun when we are just hanging out doing normal, every day things! He popped the question February 4, 2011. I was living in Cincinnati while I was getting my master’s degree, he came up to visit that weekend and was acting a little strange. He offered to take the dog outside and when he came back in he said he had something for me. We had previously decided not to get each other anything for Valentine’s Day so I was a little confused. When I went into the living room he had a small bag and on the outside of the bag there was a note that said “together we have shared many _” when I opened the bag there was a bag of Hershey kisses inside. Then there was a bigger bag, on the outside it said “Forever I want you to be in my _” in the bag was a box of Life cereal. Then there was a card, when I opened the card the outside had a carriage and it said happily ever after and on the inside it said “will you _ _” when I turned around he was on one knee with the ring and asked me to marry him. He had already made dinner reservations and had a bottle of champagne! the big day: Our wedding was more than I could’ve dreamed of. I was completely stress-free and loved every minute of it. My bridesmaids kept me laughing the entire day, they helped me to stay calm. Cody wrote me a letter that his best man brought me before the ceremony that made me cry, it was so sweet and thoughtful. My brother and I had a “surprise dance” to do at the reception and we cracked up practicing it an hour before the ceremony when our family thought we were having sentimental brother/sister time. The most memorable moment was definitely our “first look”. We decided to see each other before the wedding so that our guests wouldn’t have to wait so long to start the reception and I am so glad we did! The 20 minutes we had alone before the ceremony were amazing. Our entire reception was great, we had the most fun and everyone danced the whole night! the details: We wanted to have a vintage/romantic feel. We used many homemade details to accomplish this goal. Our ring bearer pillow was burlap from Etsy. Our flower girl basket was made by my Mom. We made our own programs, with the help of TwoYellowShoes from Etsy. She designed the programs and we printed and put them together. She also designed the menu templates and water bottle labels. We had water bottles waiting for our guests as they walked in to the ceremony. We also had a table with pictures of our grandparents that have passed when you walk in to the ceremony. I gave each of my bridesmaids brooches to put on their bouquets, I ordered the brooches from paviapavia on Etsy. Our colors were Eggplant, Pewter, and Ivory. marriage and advice: Do not stress! There will be things that are not perfect on the day of your wedding and no one will even notice! No matter what, it will be the perfect day for you and your fiance.

The Big Day: On the morning of the wedding when the bride and bridesmaids arrived at the hair salon, it was discovered that they weren’t scheduled. The hair dresser forgot to write in five appointments, instead there was only one scheduled and they had it down for a cut. The hair dresser was able to contact an additional stylest and was able to get the party finished. The bridal party arrived to the venue a half an hour late to meet with the photographer. While at our hair appointment, the guys(groom, groomsman, dads, brothers and cousins) got everything ready for the wedding and reception. They even had a table set up with pictures of our grandparents who had passed away so we could remember them and have them there with us. During pictures with the bride and bridesmaids, the mother of the bride noticed there was a small rip in the bodice of the dress. She then had to sew the wedding dress during pictures so it would be pefect for the wedding. Thank goodness I have a talented mother. Other then the hair appointment the wedding went better then planned. The photographer was very easy to work with and very talented. The wedding was beautiful. The food was excellent and the weather was absolutely perfect. We couldn’t have asked for anything better! The Details: We were engaged for 8 months before we got married. We had originally planned to get married in Okeechobee Florida in the spring of 2012. After we figured out the guest list and estimated costs we decided that a destination wedding in the mountains with just family was what we really wanted. We planned a trip to the grooms parents home in Erwin Tennessee in April of 2011 to plan the wedding. The brides family drove down from Michigan to go wedding dress/bridesmaid dress shopping and to meet the grooms family. After 2 hour at Davids Bridal we had the wedding dress purchased and the bridesmaids dress picked out. Prior to the visit, we had looked online to find possible wedding locations and had made two appointments. While eating lunch in between appointment, in Townsend Tennessee we noticed The Lodge at Valley View and thought that it would be a great place for the family to stay for the wedding. We stopped in and had the pleasure of meeting Kevin Maples who showed us pictures on his cell phone of Trillium Springs, their sister site. After our second appointment we called Kevin and he took us to see Trillium Springs. We instantly fell in love with the location. It was exactly what we had invisioned our wedding location to be. We stayed at the lodge for the night and called Kevin first thing the next morning to meet with him and reserve the location for Oct 6, 2011. Not only did Kevin have Trillium Springs available he was able to provide us with a baker for the cake(Shannon Bishop), a photographer(Sandy and Ira Smith), a minister(Rev. Jack Thomas), and agreed to cater our dinner.

Namita Bisaria & Max Jan 09.04.11 LOVE STory: Max and Namita met at Princeton University where they were both working in the laboratory of Coleen Murphy studying the biology of the aging process. They were lab-mates and good friends for a year until Max, a year ahead in school, graduated and went to Stanford to start his PhD in Cancer Biology. Namita finished her final year at Princeton, travelled around the world for a year, and met Max at Stanford again to start her PhD in Biochemistry. Again, as friends, the two of them were roommates that fall until Max moved out and subsequently asked Namita out the following Spring. Having such a strong foundation as great friends, they were fast to fall in love and were engaged the following September and married a year after that. the big day: We awoke to the weather reports predicting rain for most of the late afternoon and evening, so we signaled our vendor All Occasions to put up a tent over the ceremony area. Both Max and Namita were dressed separately, Namita’s finery taking ten times longer to put together as the Indian wedding lengha is quite heavy an complicated and requires 2-3 aunties and a team of hair people to arrange things perfectly. Maryville, TN certainly had horses, and for the path from Maryville College to RT lodge, Max rode a bedecked steed while his and Namita’s friends and family danced and sang to traditional baraat music. When he arrived, Namita’s family greeted and blessed him at the entrance to the ceremony venue, while Namita looked on secretly from a room where Max couldn’t see her. Finally the wedding ceremony commenced with the traditional Ganesh prayer, followed by garlanding of the bride and groom by each other, and the traditional Mangalfera, or walking around a fire four times with their shawls tied together. Finally they were married, signified by taking seven steps together and Max giving Namita her Mangalsutra or necklace that signifies Namita as a married woman. Max and Namita left with flowers and rice thrown at them, and reappeared for the reception and speeches. The dinner was a delicious southern style meal prepared by the chef at the RT lodge. Since Max and Namita love to dance, as does their friends and family, the rest of the night was filled with dancing! Whether it was around RT lodge firepit or the rock in the middle of RT lodge’s pond, the evening was magical and honestly the best party the bride and groom had ever been to. the details: The wedding and reception were done at RT Lodge in Maryville. It was RT Lodge’s first Indian wedding and they did an amazing job hosting an (enormous) Indian wedding. The ceremony took place at the outdoor wedding location on the premises. Since there was light rain, the ceremony was conducted under a tent. Indian wedding are done under a mandap, a covered structure with four pillars. The priest, the bride and groom and their parents all sit under the mandap.

Thank You Notes are a Must! Written by Krista Chapman
I bring you a gift and you write a thank-you note. Seemingly simple, modern brides are regularly falling prey to this etiquette blunder.

I remember my paternal grandmother forgetting my birthday one year. Waiting patiently for the signature shape of a Hallmark card, with neatly written check tucked inside to arrive, I remember waiting and thinking...was she just getting old and forgetful? I received piles of presents from friends, my parents and other grandparents acting quickly as a distraction to this oversight. I would find out later that the oversight was actually on purpose. Seeing that I had forgotten to write her a thank-you card the year before, she had forgotten to write me the check I expected. Lesson be learned young one. Years later, this lesson sticks with me and while I may be late with a thank you now and again, I always make it a point to call or write. Pleasantries are not to be overrated after all, particularly a thank you.
While, I would not describe myself as particularly sentimental throwing out magazines once read, rarely hanging onto ticket stubs and reveling in purges related to closet reorganization, I do have a secret. I have kept every thank you note, neatly stacked and held by a fraying rubber band, from the brides I worked with in my past life as a wedding planner. Every single one. Why? They make me feel good, great really. After all the blood, sweat and tears I dedicate to make a bride’s day flawless, receiving a sweet note in the penmanship of a new wife or husband, suddenly hard work is a distant memory buried in appreciative bliss. And apparently, I am not the only one that feels gratified to open their mailbox to find a handwritten note. Biggest etiquette complaint I hear repeatedly from wedding guests, family and bridal party member post wedding... I spent XXX amount of dollars on this person’s wedding as their bridesmaid, guest, etc and never received a thank you note. Nothing pisses people off more than not being appreciated. Nevertheless, our busy lives inevitably get in the way, particularly for a pair of newlyweds with honeymoons, post wedding planning exhaustion, the purchase of a new home (that needs paint and furniture and decorating) and even children. Repeated attempts to send out
a card are lost when we can’t seem to find so and so’s address or figure out what to write. Months have gone by and perhaps it’s too late...you set out with the best intentions and that’s what counts, right? No, dear reader... intention is not nearly enough in regards to your thank-you cards. However, my goal is not to lecture on the manners on the day but rather offer insight and solutions. First step - organization is key. This seems like common sense but I can’t tell you how many brides cite a lost address as their reason for a delayed thank-you. As you are organizing names and address for your invitations, keep these handy for later reference when addressing your thank-you cards. Additional, task a friend or family member to track gifts when they are being open so you know what’s what. The case of a detached card? A card-less gift, should be set aside as well as lonely cards. After all gifts are open, attempt to pair the lost mates. No luck? Ask Mom or Dad if they have any idea... often guests will share planned gifts with family. A vague thank-you, not mentioning an exact gift may be another option in a pinch. What do you say? Sadly, technology has turned many of us into miserable writers that speak in code less than 140 characters. Knowing what to say can be another reason for delayed letter writing. Simple and sweet is my best recommendation... thank your guest for coming, making reference to a favorite part of the day (yours or what you might think their’s was) and bringing Item A (mentioning how you might use this, specifically if cash was given). Signed, sealed and delivered. Finally, writing 100 plus thank-you cards in one sitting is bound to make the grateful task into a surefire chore. Break up your thank-you notes, writing them over a few nights of must-see TV (with wine in hand!). And don’t forget the groom... last time I checked he’s capable of a thank-you, too. For the bride hard press for time or looking for inspiration there’s an app for that. Recently, I stumbled across Thankster.com, a site offering computer generated hand-written notes (in your penmanship, no less). While I still strongly argue for writing thank notes to wedding guests by hand (they were important enough to get an invitation, right?), this also offers a great resource for clever and thoughtful words of appreciation. Finally, politics aside, former President George W. Bush was said to begin every day in office hand writing thank you notes. Through waning popularity, economic collapse, two wars and a shaky legacy, he still found things to be thankful for everyday. That, if nothing else, tells us the power of a thank you. love story: Paolo and I met in his hometown in Italy called Alba. I was working there for about eight months as an Au Pair, living with a family and teaching their children English. I met Paolo on my first day in Italy, just a few hours after my plane had landed. He was a mutual friend of the family I worked for, and he kindly offered to show me around and introduce me to a few other English speakers. Our friendship grew quickly and eventually transformed into a love I never expected (although all of my friends back home had predicted it). In February, I had to say goodbye to this new love, which had changed my life in order to continue my plans of graduate school back in the U.S. However, Paolo is a determined romantic who wouldn’t let an ocean get in our way. By July he was on a plane bound for Portland, OR (where I attend grad school). He left his friends, family, and everything he had ever known back in Italy to be with me, and from that point on we were inseparable. the big day: My father’s toast and dance made me cry. My friends made me laugh. My most memorable moment was standing up at the altar with Paolo and reciting our vows in both languages. Paolo’s most memorable was when he first saw me coming down the aisle and our 1st kiss. We also had a blast dancing on the boat after dinner and loved the send off of both sparklers and bird seed. The wedding planning process: We were engaged for just three months. Everyone helped!! My mom was the biggest lifesaver. Also Peggy (our wedding planner), Nikki (the cruise director), and Kate (the director at the church). Of course Paolo also helped me out with many things and I’m so thankful for his involvement in the whole process. The most important things to me were the content of the ceremony (such as our vows, the song choices, and prayers) and the reception party. I wanted all of our guests to eat well and enjoy themselves! Once everything is planned, it was just about having fun, relaxing, and getting to be in the moment. Don’t try to plan your entire wedding during the middle of a busy semester of graduate school like I did though! Allow time to really enjoy the process... but not too long. Have fun and don’t worry about each detail. At least one thing is always going to go wrong, but in the end it will be great. We are looking forward to building our lives together and many more memories in the years to come.

Love Story: Kayla and Brett met her sophmore year of high school and his junior year when he transfered to her school. They dated through out high school into college. Summers spent at Norris Lake and fall weekends at every football game, home and away dating for 7 years. After college Brett fixed Kayla dinner one night after work and popped the question her friends and family had all been waiting for.
The Big Day: Brett started the day off playing a round of golf with his groomsmen father and father in law. Kayla spent the morning getting ready for her big day. Weather was perfect making the pictures beautiful. One of the memorable moments was when the bridal party in the trolley had broken down and they had to wait to get a new ride to the church. Had beautiful linens with a soft pink and a lace overlay, it made all the difference. We wanted a rustic feel with the venue adding lanterns to the centerpieces.

First things first... set up a separate email account for your wedding planning. This will keep emails separate from your personal account and once you’re married, you can simply stop checking it. Check out MyBridemail for a wedding specific email service. What not to do? Don’t report the email as spam unless you are sure that it is. If you no longer wish to receive emails from a vendor, simply unsubscribe from the email (at the bottom of nearly all email newsletters) or contact the vendor directly asking to be removed from their list. Reporting an email as spam can limit a vendors ability to email other brides and grooms that want the information.
Absolutely! Letting a vendor know that you have decided to go with another vendor is definitely a good idea. Not only will this stop email follow-up but vendors are able to release a date to other couples looking to book. Sending a short email will generally do the trick. If you feel so inclined giving a reason on why they weren’t the right fit vendor is normally appreciated as well. Professional wedding vendors want to know how they can better serve future brides and grooms!
The answer is often yes... and it should be. While this may not seem fair, the difference in the amount of work related to a wedding vs. other social functions or corporate events is fairly significant. Often an event of similar size and budget for a retirement party or family reunion will require a third of the email and phone correspondence as a wedding. Corporate clients are even less and rarely ask for tastings, multiple meetings outside business hours and numerous proposals adjustments. All this increases the overall time a vendor spends when working with brides and grooms and since time is money, weddings cost more. If this still doesn’t seem right, ask your vendors to explain why they charge more. They should be able to explain why so it makes sense to their clients. If not... go with a vendor that has fair pricing policies.
Ideally, no bride or groom would ever have to deal with a poor performance by a wedding vendor, during or after the planning process. While I am not a legal expert, I have been on the both sides of this fence. Before you do anything, take a good look at the contract and cancellation fees. While few contracts will address customer service, a client always reserves the right to cancel their agreement. This will likely result in a loss of your initial deposit and could send you on a frantic last minute hunt for a vendor. Instead, I suggest sitting down with your vendor for a heart to heart on your concerns. Stay calm and offer suggestions for how your problems can be addressed. Avoid being overly dramatic and attacking a vendor as it will get you nowhere, fast. If possible, ask to work with another employee that might better mesh with you personally or ask to speak with a general manager or owner. If no solution is in sight, follow your gut and find a new vendor. Better to lose a small deposit than have a wedding vendor disaster on your big day. Note: The closest wedding day is, the higher the cancellation fee with likely be. Address your apprehensions when they occur, rather than wait until a budget crunch leaves you little option other than to hope things will work out. Small Claims Court can be some help here but probably not in time for wedding day.

Sarah Williams & Brett Smith 09.18.11 Wedding Planning: We were engaged for 8 months, after dating for 7 weeks. Our parents helped tremendously and my Mom was the planner. We have long and varying hours at work, as medical residents, so our parents did a great deal of work. My mom took care of the planning for the party, including the food, decorations, guest list, finding multiple vendors and much more. She and my dad even cake tested all over Knoxville and brought us personalized cake samples to taste in KY, prior to picking a vendor. My dad handled the business side of things, including contracts, budgets and parking. My dad also took dance lessons for 6 months, to prepare for our father of the bride dance and to become the Rumba King. His parents found us a quaint, vintage hotel to stay at downtown, set up the rehearsal dinner and reserved us a Rolls-Royse getaway car, complete with a driver from England. The most important thing to us about the wedding was the ceremony. We planned that ourselves and felt it carried the most meaning to us and our marriage. We picked all of our songs to communicate worship to God and included our song, “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds. Everyone in the wedding, even the pastor and musicians, were in our family. Additionally, we wrote our own vows and baked the bread for communion, as a part of our ceremony. The only part of the wedding we really planned was the ceremony. We wrote it as a book to be read proclaiming God’s wonderful love, grace, and asking for His blessing. It was amazing to hear it read aloud! We wrote our own vows which was a culmination of what God had taught us about love, together and in our relationship with Him. The visible beauty of the wedding was all my Mom. She planted hundreds of flowers and gave us a true heavenly wedding with roses to signify the colors of Love represented in our ceremony: red for love, pink for affection, yellow for friendship, orange for passion, and blue for the treasure. The arbor where we we got married was covered in white mandavillas which were gorgeous and grew more preoperative than any other! It was a vintage theme and our colors were simple, black and white with gold accents. We brought in color only in the sentimental roses mentioned previously. My mom handmade many things, including forty lanterns for the long driveway and patio, name cards, table place cards and personalized water bottles. Marriage Advice: As far as planning the wedding, the best advice we can give is to enjoy the planning as a couple coming together and focus less on the wedding, more on the life. Read marriage books together during your engagement to get to the core of each other, so you can share your viewpoints and desires on the many aspects of marriage and life, including sex, communication, work, love languages, kids, family time and romance. We most look forward to doing life together now, as two people who have come together as one.

Alia Cunha-Manly & Scott Breitengross 09.10.11 Proposal: Scott & I met almost 3 years ago. After our first date, I told everyone who would listen that he was the man I was going to marry! When you know... you know! He popped the question while we were on vacation in Florida. It was unexpected and perfect! Wedding Details: I was engaged for 11 months! I didn’t hire a planner. I definitely have the “bridal gene” and knew I wanted to be involved in every little detail. With an accounting background, I had my wedding pretty much planned out in an excel spreadsheet. Let’s just say when I got back from my honeymoon I realized what a black hole wedding planning can be. It is all consuming and I now know that I PROBABLY would have factored a wedding planner into my budget. I love blue. I started with the bridesmaids dresses and fell in love with the color. However, I didn’t want the bridesmaids to match the tables and the blue of the dresses wasn’t very “romantic”. So when I found the invitations, I knew that they would compliment each other and I pretty much took it from there. I am such a visual person so I instantly got hooked on wedding blogs. One blog led to another and another, and it soon became a nightly ritual to check out what other people were doing and get inspired! Inspiration boards were my favorite thing to do! I would save all the pictures on my iPhone and I had a folder with all my saved blog pics. Finding venues that were similar to mine and styles that were similar to mine, helped me to find my vision, my theme and my style. The vineyard had such natural beauty that I didn’t want to overpower it at all. I stuck with a more natural look by tying in some burlap. My theme (which I may have made up) was simple elegance. I truly did a lot of stuff myself. The program fans and placecards - I did with two of my bridemaids. I did a lot of the printing of everything myself. The flower girl buckets were me too! but let’s face it... ETSY.com was my best friend! Advice: I debated about whether or not to do a “first look” (photos before the ceremony) but ultimately decided to do it. If you are on the fence...my advice to you would be to DO IT! My photographer described it as the only time that you truly get to spend alone with your groom for the entire day... and that sold me. Both Scott & I loved that special time together and it made me even more excited to walk down the aisle. I was relaxed and so happy. I’m SO glad I did it!

Sarah peak & grayson price 10.29.11 our love story: Our story began a year and a half ago at Rowena’s, a small downtown Morristown boutique, which would also be the site of the proposal and the beginning of the rest of our lives. However, the road that led us to each other really began more than half a century ago with our mothers, Carolyn and Jane. They were born to parents who lived across the street from each other. They became best friends, always together, until Carolyn’s parents moved across town. Even then, Carolyn and Jane went to the same elementary school and junior high, continuing to be good friends. Eventually, they were separated during their high school and college years. While their lives grew busier, they were able to keep in touch through their parents. Their dads, our grandfathers, worked together at Roger’s men’s store in downtown Morristown after they retired from their regular jobs. They spent many hours together swapping stories about their grandchildren. In 1996, Carolyn and her husband, Buddy, were looking for a builder for their house. The person most recommended was Craig Peak, Jane’s husband and my father. Carolyn and Buddy knew that it wasn’t just irony that led them to choose my dad as the builder. Ten years after my dad built Carolyn and Buddy’s house, and when I was 17, my mother, Jane, lost her battle with cancer. Carolyn met me for the first time at my mom’s funeral and was astonished by the strong resemblance I had to my mother. At that point Carolyn felt a strong urge to take care of her childhood best friend’s daughter. However, it wasn’t until four years later that dream would come true. I was 21, and my boss, Regina, secretly approached Carolyn at church and asked if Grayson was dating anyone. Regina proceeded to tell Carolyn that she had an employee at Rowena’s that she wanted to set up with a good guy. She continued to describe me to Carolyn. When Carolyn asked what my name was, much to her surprise, Regina responded, “Sarah Peak”. Carolyn was ecstatic and thus began her mutual scheming with Regina to introduce Grayson to me. Carolyn started coming in a lot to Rowena’s. Little did I know that it was all part of the plot to get us together. One Friday, Carolyn brought newspaper clippings in to me that explained that the store I now work in used to be the store where our grandfathers once worked. She proceeded to tell me that she wanted me to meet Grayson, but because he lives and works in Georgia it could take a while to do so. I worked the next day and while my back was turned from the front of the store, out of the blue my friend’s eyes widened and said “Grayson’s here!” I quickly turned to see if it was the same Grayson that Regina and Carolyn wanted me to meet. Then I saw Carolyn walk in before him. It was at that moment that I asked my friend if she could see my heart beating through my shirt! Carolyn had convinced Grayson that the birthday gift she wanted from him could only be found at Rowena’s. He had been told very little of me, but enough to be very curious. I could be cliché and tell you that we both saw fireworks and knew from the moment we first met that we were meant to be. However, our relationship goes deeper. It was founded on a half century of close relationships of our families and a destiny that was started by our mothers’ friendship. When Grayson proposed to me in the same spot that our late grandfathers once shared stories about us, and the place where we first met, he told me that there were a thousand reasons to propose other places that would be just as memorable. However, he only needed one. The spirits of our lost loved ones filled that room as he dropped to one knee. Without a doubt, we knew the rest of our lives should start at that store… at that moment…in that spot.

of Bridal Shows
Your engaged and now it is time to start planning… With so many things to see and vendors to talk to, wedding shows can be overwhelming and feel a bit like, well the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Savvy brides see through the chaos and make the most of what bridal shows have to offer by way of inspiration, advice and vendor giveaways. With these 7 tips, you can too!

Come Prepared. The boy scouts were on to something here… Make sure you have the essentials. Have a pen to take notes and sign up for all the wedding day give-aways. Better yet, pre-print mailing labels with your name, phone number, email and wedding date to save a ton of time. Also, remember to bring your camera to capture all the wedding inspiration on display… vendors are putting their best decorating foot forward and you will want to remember everything you saw.

Don’t eat (a lot!) before you come. Weddings have food and so do wedding shows. Caterers and bakers use this opportunity to showcase great samples of their food so hold off on lunch & come hungry!

Leave the little ones at home. Children have small attention spans and even with all the cake samples, will quickly lose interest becoming dead weight. It is distracting to have fussy or bored children (or adults!) in your party while you are walking the show floor and trying to talk with vendors. Think carefully about who will join you on wedding show day.

Do your homework. It’s worthwhile to familiarize yourself with the services you are still seeking, what questions to ask and who is exhibiting at the show. This helps to maximize the time you have at each booth which can sometimes be limited with busy shows and popular vendors. Having other details such as your wedding date or budget mapped out, are also helpful… you don’t want to fall in love with a vendor only to find out, that they are booked on your wedding date or out of your price range.

Come ready to make a deal. Many of the vendors will offer show-only discounts and specials for brides ready to book. If you have done your research and have your checkbook in hand, the savings will add up fast. Keep in mind that vendors are not as busy during the fashion show so if you have your dress, use this time to talk one-on-one.

These boots are made for comfort. Remember the show floor is big with lots of walking so leave the heels for later that night and wear comfy shoes!

FREE tickets! Many local vendors are given free show tickets to hand out to perspective brides that they would like to personally invite to the show. If you plan to set up meetings with vendors before the show, make sure to ask if they will have a booth and you just may get free tickets.

The Proposal: While visiting me in Nashville, Jeremy planned a day full of things we love to do – a HUGE breakfast, rock climbing, a picnic, a delicious dinner out. He told me it was our 5 ½ year anniversary, and even though we had never really celebrated an anniversary before, I fully bought that as an explanation for the big fuss. After dinner, he took me to a hill overlooking downtown Nashville, there was a walkway lined with candles and flowers, and that’s when I knew. Throughout the day, he’d given me little notes telling me what he loved about me (you know…mushy stuff), and there was a final note sitting at the end of the walkway along with my favorite wine, my favorite cupcakes, and even more flowers. The note read, “turn around” and when I did, I saw him on one knee and immediately burst into…nervous laughter. I don’t remember a word of what he said, but I know I said yes! Afterward, we headed back to my apartment where I was surprised by my family and friends who had secretly driven in to celebrate with us. Everything about the day was perfect, and it was only right that the people we love could be a part of it. Wedding Details: We wanted it to be “Elegant Southern.” The reception was in a renovated barn, after all, but that didn’t mean we needed to add hay bales, gingham, and cowboy boots. Instead, we infused it with southern charm using mason jars, pies, peaches, and a biscuit bar. I scoured wedding blogs in the first few months looking for wedding inspiration. Once I got an idea of what I wanted, I cut myself off. Too much surfing the web can make you second-guess your initial decisions and gut instincts. I made very specific plans for the flowers (I had a document literally 15 pages long of flower-arranging instructions…bridezilla?), and started collecting mason jars and antique books for the centerpieces. My husband built our gorgeous arbor and our crates himself. Together, we made the signs, invitations, and tags for our placesettings. My aunt worked like a dog to put together all of our flower arrangements and centerpieces. My bridesmaids and I made our own bouquets. I even made the marmalade from our biscuit bar with my grandmother! The bridal party wore light grey, but we wanted soft citruses for the flowers. We used primarily peach, ivory, light pink, and coral.

Is wedding advice coming at you from every angle? Determine what’s fact and what’s fiction by debunking these common wedding myths.

IT’S NOT REALLY A WEDDING IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW TRADITION. The first person to buck tradition and wear white was Queen Victoria (that’s right...brides have not always worn white). This is now taken for granted as standard attire as is a wedding cake, first dance, bouquet toss and something blue. A wedding simply requires an offisciant, license and witness. The celebration of said wedding should be an expression of the couple’s personalities and sometimes breaking the rules leads to new traditions that are a better fit than those of past generations.

The Bride’s parents pay for wedding and reception, groom’s parents pay for rehearsal dinner. Wouldn’t it be nice if Mom and Dad still footed the bill but not so with modern weddings. This myth goes out the window as at least a third of wedding costs are now cover by the couple themselves. Families today are pooling their resources and then together, determining how funds are spent for all related events.

THE BRIDE CAN ONLY BE GIVEN AWAY BY HER FATHER.
While email is the preferred way of communication for many a message, it is generally frowned upon when thanking your wedding guests. Hand written thank-you notes are far from out-dated and thought tedious to a generation of texters, it must be done. Appreciate this dying art and take the time to communicate as your grandparents. Years later, a friend will dig out your hand written note, carefully saved. Not your email.
This myth dates back to the days of old, when daughters were literal property of their fathers and a wedding was merely a business deal for Dad to expand his fortunes through the sale of his daughter. While the tradition still sticks to this day, I doubt very much that modern brides would describe themselves as part of dad’s estate. Your aisle escort should be a person that played a significant and supportive role in your path to find true love.

WEDDING LUCK (AND MARRIAGE) DEPENDS ON A SIXPENCE, SPIDERS AND SUPERSTITIONS. Here’s the thing about luck... it all depends on the belief that wearing a certain color, carrying a token or changing your behavior will shift future events to their preferred outcome. Luck is mostly used as a way to counter those things completely out of our control and has often been a way of explaining the unexplained. If only making it through the first year of marriage was as easy as saving the top tier of your cake. Make your own luck careful planning, professional vendors and a positive attitude.

If you can’t foot the bar bill, offer a cash bar.
Wedding vendors are not Mexican bazaars where you haggle the best possible deal. While a vendor may run a promotion, expecting to get a discount because you’re a bride is like expecting your doctor to run a special because you’re a patient. This doesn’t make long-term business sense. Instead, plan to attend a local bridal shows for show-only specials or giveaways and be honest about your budget and vision with wedding vendors. Professionals will work with bride to find creative ways to stretch your buck and meet their bottom line.
Cash bars are T-A-C-K-Y... as well as anything else on your wedding day that requires you guest pony up cash is tacky. Remember these are the same dearly loved friends and family that bought a special outfit, traveled across the country, paid for a hotel room and bought you a gift for your wedding. During the wedding day, guests’ wallets should stay in back pockets and purses. Tactful Solution… If you are set on offering liquor at your wedding but fear the cost, consider a limited bar with only wine and beer (better yet keg beer, often costing half as much per serving as bottled).

With the vastness of today’s World Wide Web, the likelihood of finding a bargain can make DIY more costly than one thinks. This is even more apparent when your inner crafter is not well match to make DIY magic (but Martha Stewart made it look so easy!). And remember time is money, even if it is your time. Be realistic about how much time will need to be dedicated to DIY projects, particularly in the last few weeks leading up to wedding day (when the to-do list is never ending and you’d rather be with you family). If the budget is stretch thin, it might make more sense to skip it all together.
While you and your groom are certainly the guests of honor, a bride with her sights set on making wedding day entirely about her is likely to be labeled a bridezilla. Weddings are as much about the happy couple and their new life together as it is a celebration for all the related family members. Instead find ways to celebrate your family or close friends and their traditions with your new love and the traditions in store for years to come. This ensures your guests feel part of a truly special event.
Your bridal party must have the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen. Today’s bride has thrown out all the rules when it comes to bridal parties. With you closest friends and family by your side on wedding day, trying to stay in the box of specific numbers or even genders just doesn’t work. Nowadays, your maid of honor is now your man of honor, pooches are playing ring bearer and dancing to the altar is what makes wedding ceremonies personal, memorable and unique.
