Love Story: We met at a church conference where Nate was playing drums and I was singing. We are a perfect match because we are best friends. It doesn’t matter what we are doing, we just love to be together. Nate proposed while we were sitting on a bench beside the Tennessee River. It was the same bench where we sat on our first date. The Big Day: We could not of ask for a more perfect day. My favorite moment, as cliche’ as it sounds was when we saw each other for the first time. We did a first look before the wedding. Dan and Natalie Watson caught our expressions and emotions perfectly. Our pictures of that moment are priceless. Probably the funniest parts of the day involved the nine kids we had in our wedding party. They were so much fun and kept us laughing all day. Details: We were engaged for a year, so there was lots of time to plan. My mother is our church’s wedding director, and she has helped plan so many weddings that it was a given that she would help plan mine. The most important thing about our wedding was that the guests would have a great time. Nate and I had guests coming from all over the country and we wanted them to just relax and have fun. It was so special to us that all of our favorite people were under the same roof sharing in our special moment. It made everything so perfect. I wanted our day to be bright and fun. We wanted to have a “preppy/ classic” theme. We used navy blue and apple green as our main colors, and we used pops of red here and there. We used lots of pearls, plaid, and seersucker all throughout. Budget Tips: Our biggest splurge was on catering. Because we had a night wedding, we wanted to make sure our guests had a full course dinner. We saved big on decorating because we did most of it ourselves. We also surfed the internet constantly for the best deals on things. We found cool unique things like our ring bearer pillow, our custom guest book, and our green aisle runner all on the internet for great prices. These little touches really pulled our look together. Advice from the Bride: The best advice I can give a bride and groom in planning their wedding is to not get too stressed out. Stay calm and everything will work out. Also, choose a great photographer. Your pictures will mean so much!

Bethany Davidson & Bryan Brisson 09.04.10

Love Story: Bryan and I met through his sister, Brittney. Brittney and I met in Anatomy class at Pellissippi State and became friends. She always thought that Bryan and I would be perfect for each other, so we started studying together at her house so we could meet. We hit it off and started dating. On our first date, we went fishing and he caught a huge trout with his bare hands! I knew there had to be something special about him! We both love being outdoors, so we enjoy fishing, hunting, camping, and things like that together. Bryan proposed to me on the beach at sunrise. We went for a walk and were having a long talk waiting on the sun to come up and he got down on one knee as it rose. The ring was beautiful, and of course I said yes! I had no idea he was planning that! Details: Bryan and I wanted a casual wedding. We are not the type to always get “fancied” up, so we wanted everyone to just come and have a good time and not worry about what they needed to wear. Bryan insisted on wearing his jeans and boots, so we just made that part of our theme. It turned out awesome! The beautiful blue color we picked out went so well with the brown boots and jackets and the flowers. My mom made all the centerpieces, minus the flowers, and the flower arrangements that lined the aisle. She did a great job! Everything was beautiful! We planned on about 150 guests. We saved by doing a lot of the decorating ourselves, but there is no substitute for fresh flowers. They were so beautiful! We also saved a lot on the catering by not serving a plated, gourmet meal. The food was casual and served buffet style. It was so good! The dress was a bit of a splurge, but hey, you only get married once, right! The Big Day: All my bridesmaids kept me laughing but what sticks in my head the most was trying to iron one of my bridesmaids dresses. She was wearing it and we managed to get it up on the ironing board to iron a crease out somehow. It made for a funny picture! The most memorable moment, was seeing Bryan’s face as he was watching me come down the aisle. It brought tears to my eyes. The look on his face is something I’ll never forget! Marriage advice: My advice to anyone planning a wedding is to stay true to yourself and plan a wedding that suits you, not someone else’s idea of what a wedding should be. Also, do everything early, because if you are a procrastinator like me, it will all pile up at the end and become stressful. Make all your decisions together, because it’s the groom’s special day, too. After all, marriage is a team effort! I look forward to raising a family with my husband soon. He will be a great father, and I can’t wait.

Heather Holloway & Brandon Hall 10.16.10 the proposal: Well, Brandon is in the USAF and he had just previously gotten back from his second deployment to Afghanistan so he was home in Knoxville for the week. I had been working all day (not to mention I had the WORST day at work ever) and when I walked in the front door from work Brandon told me we were going to Flemings for dinner to “celebrate”. And so of course being a girl I was thinking ‘what does he mean celebrate!?’ He sat me down on the couch and he got on one knee and pulled out a ring and asked me to marry him! I was beyond shocked and I had so many emotions going on at once that I forgot to say yes right away. So after I got it together, I of course said YES and couldn’t let go of Brandon’s neck. And just like Brandon said we would, we went to Flemings and celebrated that night. The big day: The most important thing to us was to stay relaxed and take in the special moment. Brandon and I had discussed what to expect on our wedding night so we made sure to not get overwhelmed by trying to talk to all 370 people at the reception and to just enjoy each other and enjoy celebrating “us”. My favorite wedding moment was when we were introduced as husband and wife at the reception. Our whole wedding party partnered up and we all walked in dancing to Chris Brown’s “Forever” song. the dress: My mother, grandmother, aunt, and mother-in-law all went with me to pick out my dress. I had always said I wanted a very fitted dress so that’s what I went for. It was a Casablanca Couture, mermaid fit, sweetheart top (with Swarovski Crystals), and a Swarovski Crystal covered sash that tied on the back of the dress on the top of my legs. The bow was tied in a knot and the sashes went down the dress and out onto the train. (This was the selling feature of the dress). This dress was actually the 2nd dress I tried on. When I put it on everyone LOVED it and I felt so good in it. the planning process: I loved everything about planning our wedding… It was so fun! I especially loved picking out invitations, flowers (i.e. centerpieces, bouquets, etc.) and the cake. When we were picking out our colors, I wanted to choose a color that Brandon and I both liked so I went with slate blue because that is both of our favorite color. We went with ivory roses because roses are my favorite and ivory looked beautiful against that slate blue. married life: Brandon is in the Air Force and stationed in Goldsboro, NC and I live here in Knoxville so we only got to see each other maybe one weekend a month. We were both just looking so forward to actually being husband and wife and spending quality time together period.

Molly Hannifin & Caleb Ryan 10.30.10

The Proposal: Caleb and I have taken trips up to Cades Cove with our friends a few times over the past couple years to bike the 11-mile loop under the full moon, so when he asked me to go before he moved to Houston, I initially did not think anything of it. I was a little suspicious of him because he kept mentioning details that were not normal “Caleb” details...like taking a bottle of wine or my favorite food, smoked salmon bagels. These things all seemed kind of fishy...especially since we had just looked at rings (Wednesday, 8 days before we got engaged). Caleb came by my house for about 15 minutes before we left and I of course could not hold it in. I totally ruined it and immediately go “I hope that you do it tonight!!” Caleb did not say too much to this and just kind of laughed at me, and he had to leave pretty quickly after. When we got to Cades Cove while it was still light out. We started biking and pulled off at an overlook spot. We just hung out for a while, and just when we were about to leave, Caleb told me that he wanted to ask me something before we left. He pulled a ring out of his pocket and asked me if I would marry him. I was actually surprised, and of course, I said yes! As soon as we got engaged, it got dark, and the moon began to rise over the mountains. It was beautiful and perfect! The Big Day: It was a pretty emotional day because I had never left Knoxville my entire life, and after our reception, we were hitting the road to move to Texas, where Caleb had been since June. My bridesmaids showed up at 8:00, and the morning flew by getting ready for our 11:30 ceremony. The ceremony was PERFECT. Saying my vows was the best part of the day! It was emotional making the commitment to love one another forever, and it was awesome!! I barely remember the reception, really. It flew by! We rode away on a tandem bicycle with a license plate that had ‘Tennessee’ on the top, ‘Texas’ on the bottom, and ‘Just Married’ in the middle. That afternoon, we loaded up the suburban and headed to Birmingham for the night. The next day, we stopped in New Orleans, and made it to our new home in Houston, Texas on the third day! Advice on planning a wedding: You are planning a wedding to celebrate your marriage, not the other way around. Don’t stress! The whole point is to be married at the end of it, which is the most wonderful thing. A wedding is just supposed to be fun. I had so much fun planning, and I never once got stressed.

BRIDAL MYTHS

Debunked!

Is wedding advice coming at you from every angle? Determine what’s fact and what’s fiction by debunking these common wedding myths.

1

IT’S NOT REALLY A WEDDING IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW TRADITION. The first person to buck tradition and wear white was Queen Victoria (that’s right...brides have not always worn white). This is now taken for granted as standard attire as is a wedding cake, first dance, bouquet toss and something blue. A wedding simply requires an offisciant, license and witness. The celebration of said wedding should be an expression of the couple’s personalities and sometimes breaking the rules leads to new traditions that are a better fit than those of past generations.

4

The Bride’s parents pay for wedding and reception, groom’s parents pay for rehearsal dinner. Wouldn’t it be nice if Mom and Dad still footed the bill but not so with modern weddings. This myth goes out the window as at least a third of wedding costs are now cover by the couple themselves. Families today are pooling their resources and then together, determining how funds are spent for all related events.

2

Thank you notes can be sent by email.

3

THE BRIDE CAN ONLY BE GIVEN AWAY BY HER FATHER.

While email is the preferred way of communication for many a message, it is generally frowned upon when thanking your wedding guests. Hand written thank-you notes are far from out-dated and thought tedious to a generation of texters, it must be done. Appreciate this dying art and take the time to communicate as your grandparents. Years later, a friend will dig out your hand written note, carefully saved. Not your email.

This myth dates back to the days of old, when daughters were literal property of their fathers and a wedding was merely a business deal for Dad to expand his fortunes through the sale of his daughter. While the tradition still sticks to this day, I doubt very much that modern brides would describe themselves as part of dad’s estate. Your aisle escort should be a person that played a significant and supportive role in your path to find true love.

5

WEDDING LUCK (AND MARRIAGE) DEPENDS ON A SIXPENCE, SPIDERS AND SUPERSTITIONS. Here’s the thing about luck... it all depends on the belief that wearing a certain color, carrying a token or changing your behavior will shift future events to their preferred outcome. Luck is mostly used as a way to counter those things completely out of our control and has often been a way of explaining the unexplained. If only making it through the first year of marriage was as easy as saving the top tier of your cake. Make your own luck careful planning, professional vendors and a positive attitude.

6

Vendors will always give a discount if you ask.

7

If you can’t foot the bar bill, offer a cash bar.

Wedding vendors are not Mexican bazaars where you haggle the best possible deal. While a vendor may run a promotion, expecting to get a discount because you’re a bride is like expecting your doctor to run a special because you’re a patient. This doesn’t make long-term business sense. Instead, plan to attend a local bridal shows for show-only specials or giveaways and be honest about your budget and vision with wedding vendors. Professionals will work with bride to find creative ways to stretch your buck and meet their bottom line.

Cash bars are T-A-C-K-Y... as well as anything else on your wedding day that requires you guest pony up cash is tacky. Remember these are the same dearly loved friends and family that bought a special outfit, traveled across the country, paid for a hotel room and bought you a gift for your wedding. During the wedding day, guests’ wallets should stay in back pockets and purses. Tactful Solution… If you are set on offering liquor at your wedding but fear the cost, consider a limited bar with only wine and beer (better yet keg beer, often costing half as much per serving as bottled).

10

8

Brides on a budget save big with DIY Projects.

9

Wedding Day is the Bride’s Day.

With the vastness of today’s World Wide Web, the likelihood of finding a bargain can make DIY more costly than one thinks. This is even more apparent when your inner crafter is not well match to make DIY magic (but Martha Stewart made it look so easy!). And remember time is money, even if it is your time. Be realistic about how much time will need to be dedicated to DIY projects, particularly in the last few weeks leading up to wedding day (when the to-do list is never ending and you’d rather be with you family). If the budget is stretch thin, it might make more sense to skip it all together.

While you and your groom are certainly the guests of honor, a bride with her sights set on making wedding day entirely about her is likely to be labeled a bridezilla. Weddings are as much about the happy couple and their new life together as it is a celebration for all the related family members. Instead find ways to celebrate your family or close friends and their traditions with your new love and the traditions in store for years to come. This ensures your guests feel part of a truly special event.

Your bridal party must have the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen. Today’s bride has thrown out all the rules when it comes to bridal parties. With you closest friends and family by your side on wedding day, trying to stay in the box of specific numbers or even genders just doesn’t work. Nowadays, your maid of honor is now your man of honor, pooches are playing ring bearer and dancing to the altar is what makes wedding ceremonies personal, memorable and unique.

Details: We were engaged for 2 1/2 years. We had plenty of time to plan the perfect wedding weekend. Will and I don’t have any family that live in East Tennessee so we had to do many things our self. That being said, we could not have done it without the help of our parents. Even though they all live out of town, they were a very integral part of our wedding planning. and they did make some trips to Knoxville to help with dress shopping, flower shopping, etc. Deneise Lane, the wedding coordinator at Whitestone was just fantastic. I cannot say enough nice things about her. I love the color pink. I wanted the wedding to be tradional yet classy and elegant. So we were able to use a lot of pink mixed in with black and white. I don’t really have much of a creative/artsy side so I looked to my friends, family and the internet for good ideas. Whitestone is such a beautiful venue so there wasn’t alot that needed to be done :) The Big Day: Every time I think back on my wedding day a rush of happiness comes over me. It was truly a magical day....even though we had to go to plan B for both the rehearsal dinner and the wedding ceremony because of the weather. We had planned to have our rehearsal dinner outside in a large gazebo on the Whitestone property which would have been lovely. However, because of the rain it had to be moved to the covered patio in the Farmhouse Building. This ended up being a better place because guest had the option of being inside or out. My dad surprised us by hiring a bluegrass band to play during the dinner. It was so much fun! The wedding ceremony was going to be outside at the Courtyard Gazebo but was also moved indoors because of the rain. The chapel ended up being just beautiful. The staff at Whitestone made everything so very easy and I didn’t have to worry about a thing on my big day. We budgeted for about 100 guest. Pictures are very important to Will and I so we knew from the beginning that we would not skimp in this area. So we did splurge on our wedding photographer, Hope Photography. Wes and Danielle Hope are a husband and wife team and are AMAZING photographers! We clicked with them immediately. They are so much fun to be around. And Danielle ended up being the only one that could bustle my dress correctly! :) I have received countless compliments on our wedding pictures. My father recently passed away and the photos of him walking me down the aisle and our dance together will be cherished for a lifetime. Choosing Hope Photography was one of the best decisions we made.

Kara Blackstock & George Johnson ĀĀĀ October 10, 2009 PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRYAN ALLEN PHOTOGRAPHY

Kara Blackstock & George Johnson III 10.10.09

the love story: We met a couple of days after New Year’s in 2009. Frank was in Knoxville celebrating his 30th birthday with family and friends. I was meeting some friends and we were at the same restaurant in Knoxville. We had our first date the following week and haven’t been apart since. Frank proposed to me in August 2009-he took me and my two daughters out to his parent’s vacation home on the lake in White Pine, TN. He took me out on the deck overlooking the lake and played Keith Urban’s “Making Memories of Us”-he got down on his knee and proposed. The ring he gave me has three diamonds-one in the center and two on the sides-the two on the sides representing my young daughters. I think we are a good match because we are a good balance for each other-we are supportive of one another and are truly best friends. the details: We wanted a small ceremony with family and close friends. We wanted it outdoors and his parents have an incredible home and property on the lake. His parents helped us tremendously with the preparations and getting everything together. Frank’s father, George built the lakeside stage/platform for the ceremony and made sure the property looked beautiful for our wedding day! Our colors were beautiful shades of purple and white-as you seen in the photos...our wedding flowers were to die for! The florist took my ideas and made them come to life in the most beautiful bouquets and arrangements! Our wedding cake was incredible! When we celebrated our first anniversary and ate the top layer that was saved, it was still delicious! I haven’t known many people who can say that. The big day: We planned our outdoor wedding and reception, obviously not knowing what the weather would be. We watched the weather predictions each day praying for sun. We made it through the rehearsal, but then the rain moved in that night. The day of the wedding was overcast and then as we were completing our prewedding photos, it began to rain. We were afraid that we would have to move the ceremony under the reception tent, but literally minutes before the ceremony, the rain ceased and our guests were able to put their umbrellas away. We decided to see each other before the ceremony. We weren’t sure about this but after our photographer told us that he had a lot of couples who loved the special time together before and he assured us that it wouldn’t take anything away from the big moment of walking down the aisle. It was a great decision. We met alone (with just the photographers) and spent about an hour, it was magical. After spending this time together, our wedding party joined us for some pre-ceremony photos. It was a fun time. I think it took away some of the normal stress of the wedding day and we wouldn’t trade that time together for anything. One of the best parts of our wedding day!

WAYS

to Make the Most of

BRIDAL SHOWS

Your engaged and now it is time to start planning… you’re in luck! New brides-to-be can gear up for bridal show season. With so many things to see and vendors to talk to, wedding shows can be overwhelming and feel a bit like, well the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Savvy brides see through the chaos and making the most of what bridal shows have to offer by way of inspiration, advice and vendor giveaways. With these 7 tips, you can too!

•1•

Come Prepared. The boy scouts were on to something here… Make sure you have the essentials. Have a pen to take notes and sign up for all the wedding day give-aways. Better yet, pre-print mailing labels with your name, phone number, email and wedding date to save a ton of time. Also, remember to bring your camera to capture a the wedding inspiration on display… vendors are putting their best decorating foot forward and you will want to remember all that you saw.

•2•

Don’t eat (a lot!) before you come. Weddings have food and so do wedding shows. Caterers and bakers use this opportunity to showcase great samples of their food so hold off on lunch & come hungry!

•3•

Leave the little ones at home. Children have small attention spans and even with all the cake samples, will quickly lose interest becoming dead weight. It is distracting to have fussy or bored children (or adults!) in your party while you are walking the show floor and trying to talk with vendors. Think carefully about who will join you on wedding show day.

•4•

Do your homework. It’s worthwhile to familiarize yourself with the services you are still seeking, what questions to ask and who is exhibiting at the show. This helps to maximize the time you have at each booth which can sometimes be limited with busy shows and popular vendors. Having other details such as your wedding date or budget mapped out, are also helpful… you don’t want to fall in love with a vendor only to find out that they are booked on your wedding date or out of your price range.

•5•

Come ready to make a deal. Many of the vendors will offer show-only discounts and specials for brides ready to book. If you have done your research and have your checkbook in hand, the savings will add up fast. Keep in mind that vendors are not as busy during the fashion show so if you have you dress, use this time to talk one-on-one.

•6•

These boots are made for comfort. Remember the show floor is big with lots of walking on so leave the heels for later that night and wear comfy shoes!

•7•

FREE tickets! Many local vendors are given free show tickets to hand out to perspective brides that they would like to personally invite to the show. If you plan to set up meetings with vendors before the show, make sure to ask if they will have a booth and you just may get free tickets. Don’t miss the next Knoxville Pink Bridal Shows Sunday, August 7, 2011 & Sunday, January 8, 2012 Visit www.ThePinkBride.com for more details.

How did you meet and when did he propose?: I was a bartender on campus when Nick and I first met. His stepbrother, Tyler, was a regular at my bar. During football season they came in and Tyler introduced us, then Nick just started coming in to see me. Ever since we have been together! When Nick proposed I was getting ready for my college graduation. I was at my parents house getting ready when he came over, of course I was running late. Nick mention that he couldn’t find his wallet and wanted me to help look in his truck for it. So we went down to the truck where he told me to look in the passenger side in the glove box. When I opened the glove box there was the open box with my ring in it. I picked up the box and turned to Nick and there he was on one knee and asked me to marry him. Needless to say I was late to graduation! the Big Day: Oh the big day went by so fast. What I remember most is the feeling that I had knowing this was my wedding day. Nick mentioned that during the ceremony it was hard not to laugh because I was so giddy. I hardly remember what the officent said but I remember our vows and the “I DO’s.” The dances were one of the best parts for me, each time we danced felt like the first one! I did cry once, before the wedding my best friend brought my 2 1/2 month old son out to me. Nathan was dressed in a tuxedo onesie with a Marine Corps dress blues bib! It was the cutest thing I have ever seen, Nick and Nathan both wearing dress blues, I couldn’t hold it in! My photographer, Moonlight Photographic, was amazing. They captured the love and romance of my wedding on film. They personalize everything to your style and what you like. Also they don’t waste your time taking pictures, they want to get the shot and move on with the wedding reception. Which is really nice on a crazy day! Wedding Planning Process: My mother and I planned the whole wedding together with the help of my sister. Nick and I were engaged for 8 months. But since we were expecting our son I wanted to have everything done before my due date, so we planned it in 6 months. I can’t say that one thing was the most important, well the dress was a big one, because when I was planning everything seemed like it was! Advice for future Brides: Try to relax... Its crazy how much stress can come from planning a wedding, but just remember that if something goes wrong your guest wont know. Enjoy your wedding it goes by fast!

The love story: My best friend from childhood called and said she wanted me to meet someone. Three weeks later my first every blind date picked me up at my house. Three months after our blind date he popped the question...out of no where....in his living room. Four months later, we walked down the aisle. Recap your big day: The night before the wedding, Jared was asked, “What are you going to do before the wedding tomorrow?” His response, “I think I’m going to get out in the yard and do some Bobcat work.” That became a joke between the girls and I the whole next day. The best decision Jared and I made was seeing each other before the wedding and getting all of our pictures taken. It was almost like seeing each other right before the ceremony was a confirmation of “okay this is without a doubt WHO I want to spend my life with.” I carried my grandmothers handkerchief with me along with my bouquet throughout the entire ceremony, it was like having a piece of her with me the whole day. One of my most proud moments was having my Dad and my sweet 10 year old brother walk me down the aisle. My brother and I are very close so I couldn’t think of a better way to incorporate him into the wedding other than letting him walk me down the aisle and help give me away.

the details: I wanted to seem like a very laid back bride. Originally, I wanted the bridesmaids to wear eggplant colored dresses. When I realized that the girls in my wedding were all different shapes and sizes, I decided the easiest thing to do would be to let them pick out whatever dress they wanted. The uneasy part of that is it’s complicated to find all kinds of dresses in eggplant color. So, I let them go with black. They were allowed to get any black dress from any store as long as it was appropriate for a church wedding. It worked out perfect. They were able to get the style of dress that suited them best and pay as little or as much as they chose. ‘We also decided to let the guys wear grey suits instead of tuxes. Since their dresses weren’t eggplant colored, we incorporated that color into the guys suits and flowers. Our favorite part of the reception was our photo booth. Jared was determined to have one, but when we saw the prices of them, we decided against them. He called Tara and asked if she could help us create our own. She set up a camera and we brought all kinds of costumes and accessories and let our guests have a great time with it.

The Big Day: The day could not have gone more smoothly. It was 70 degrees and beautiful outside! The ceremony was sweet and it felt so special - it was definitely the part of the that made me cry! There was a particular worship song that I loved and had picked it for our communion. When Joe’s sister began singing it, I just lost it! It was such a beautiful moment - our first communion as a married couple. Our band was so energetic and really got everyone on the dance floor! The part that made me laugh the hardest was when the band asked my family and Joe’s family to join us on stage, and had ALL of us (including my 72-year-old father) do the sprinkler and other hilarious dance moves. Details: I really wanted a rustic and laid back wedding. I wanted to create an atmosphere where people felt they could just let loose and have fun! I wanted to have an outdoor wedding in the fall because to me, that time of year is so beautiful and relaxing. Also, an outdoor wedding allowed the wedding to feel more laidback. I started looking at other bridal blogs to get inspiration for decor, and then got to work! Joe and I were engaged for an entire year, so I used that time to my advantage and made most of the decor for our wedding. I love the look of mason jars, and I had seen a wedding where mason jar chandeliers hung from the ceiling, so Joe and I worked hard to recreate them. I also used a lot of burlap to make table runners. I wanted my colors to be soft so I chose peach, a light turquoise, and a varying tones of gray. My wedding budget was $20,000 for 200 guests. I saved a lot on decor by making my own! I think we splurded on the location. Marriage and advice: Get a wedding coordinator!!!!!!! There is nothing fun about a disorganized wedding and it is super stressful for the bride. Even if you think you have planned everything, SOMETHING will mess up on the wedding day, and it is so nice to not have to worry about it-it’s your day, you should enjoy it! Also, don’t get so obsessed with every detail. No one will notice if you forgot a detail. I have been surprised by how much closer Joe and I have gotten in the few months we have been married. He has become my best friend and the person I confide in and who I trust the most.

Veera Amin & Scottie Johnson March 12,2011

PHOTOGRAPHY BY DIXIE PIXEL

Veera Amin & Scottie Johnson 03.12.11

the love story: Scottie and I met hanging out with friends. He pursued me for a couple months and I would always question whether I wanted a boyfriend or not. Then one day it just hit me that I was going to pass up a really good guy and that I was ready to take him seriously! And that was that!! 2 and a half years later he proposed to me at a restaurant out on the lake and I said yes! Then after dinner he took me on a helicopter ride. It was so romantic. He had the helicopter land in the back of the restaurant and everyone was cheering for us!! Scottie and I just work. The big day: Because my wedding was an Indian wedding it was sort of a funny day from the very start. As soon as Scottie’s groomsmen saw him in his Indian outfit for the wedding ceremony they started to make fun of him!! During the wedding in traditional Indian weddings the bridesmaids have to try to steal the grooms shoes after he takes them off. (he has to take them off before he can get on the mandap, which is the stage we get married on) Its the groomsmen’s job to keep the bridesmaids from getting the shoes. Well it is taken very seriously! And they did! In the middle of the wedding ceremony my bridesmaids were fighting the groomsman for the shoes which were hidden in 2 of their tux pockets. Everyone stopped paying attention to the ceremony and starting laughing. It was great! Something that was unexpected that happened was there were so many people dancing on the dance floor that we broke it!! (It might have been poor engineering but we decided to say it was because we were having such a great time!) the Planning process: We were engaged for 8 months. My wedding planner did all the layouts for how the tents were going to look and she would ask me if I liked it and if I didn’t she would come back with revisions. It was easy and hard all at the same time! My budget was about $70,000-$100,000! We definitely went over!! I think we spent a pretty even amount on everything. We knew that we wanted there to be plenty of good food, lots of alcohol, and good music. The essentials for a good time! I know not all weddings go 100% as planned but the most important thing was the marriage. I knew I was going to wake up the next day and be married to someone I love very much!! wedding advice: I would tell them to make sure they are keeping up with everything even if they have a wedding planner!! Also don’t let other people convince you what’s best for your own wedding. Do what you want to do!! I look forward to taking vacations together, learning to cook for my husband, and having children one day!

Jessica Jones & Jonathan Morgan July 24, 2010 Photography by Your Reflections

LOVE STORY: We met in high school, although we never dated in school we always had a thing for each other. After we both graduated, we dated for a little over a year before he popped the question on the 4th of July in 2009. We had gone fishing that day and before we left Jonathan asked me to go walk on some rocks in the river. When I was walking up to him he knelt down on the rock in the middle of the water an asked me to marry him! It could not have been more perfect. He is my perfect match because we are best friends and I know I can tell him anything. I’m also hard headed and he puts up with that. He says I’m his perfect match because we can do anything together and always have fun. Wedding Details: We are from the country so we knew we wanted to do something with hay bales, cowboy boots, and John Deere. We knew someone who let us use their barn and farm house. It was perfect. My girls wore cowboy boots, our guests sat on hay bales, and we rode off in a jeep painted John Deere. It was perfect for us. We knew it would probably be hot so we made our programs into fans. I think everyone was using them! Our colors were pink and orange. I think they go great together. the Big Day: I think I laughed the most at all the guests dancing. My grandparents could dance better than me! I tired not to cry but as soon as I started walking down the aisle I felt the tears coming. It was happy tears because I knew I never wanted anything more than to marry my best friend and it was coming true! Our most memorable moment was seeing each other for the first time. There wasn’t anything that happened that wasn’t planned really. The only thing was it was so hot that day. It had to be 100 degrees! Later on we found out it really was the hottest day of the year. Marriage Advice: Be patient with one another. It is stressful but it is also a very special day for the bride and groom. I think what has surprised us most about the first few months was learning everything about each other. I don’t think you really know each other until after you get married and live together.

Don't be that bride

Thank You Notes are a Must!

I bring you a gift and you write a thank-you note. Seemingly simple, modern brides are regularly falling prey to this etiquette blunder.

Thank You!

I remember my paternal grandmother forgetting my birthday one year. Waiting patiently for the signature shape of a Hallmark card, with neatly written check tucked inside to arrive, I remember waiting and thinking...was she just getting old and forgetful? I received piles of presents from friends, my parents and other grandparents acting quickly as a distraction to this oversight. I would find out later that the oversight was actually on purpose. Seeing that I had forgotten to write her a thank-you card the year before, she had forgotten to write me the check I expected. Lesson be learned young one. Years later, this lesson sticks with me and while I may be late with a thank you now and again, I always make it a point to call or write. Pleasantries are not to be overrated after all, particularly a thank you. While, I would not describe myself as particularly sentimental throwing out magazines once read, rarely hanging onto ticket stubs and reveling in purges related to closet reorganization, I do have a secret. I have kept every thank you note, neatly stacked and held by a fraying rubber band, from the brides I worked with in my past life as a wedding planner. Every single one. Why? They make me feel good, great really. After all the blood, sweat and tears I dedicate to make a bride’s day flawless, receiving a sweet note in the penmanship of a new wife or husband, suddenly hard work is a distant memory buried in appreciative bliss. And apparently, I am not the only one that feels gratified to open their mailbox to find a handwritten note. Biggest etiquette complaint I hear repeatedly from wedding guests, family and bridal party member post wedding... I spent XXX amount of dollars on this person’s wedding as their bridesmaid, guest, etc and never received a thank you note. Nothing pisses people off more than not being appreciated. Nevertheless, our busy lives inevitably get in the way, particularly for a pair of newlyweds with honeymoons, post wedding planning exhaustion, the purchase of a new home (that needs paint and furniture and decorating) and even children. Repeated attempts to send out

a card are lost when we can’t seem to find so and so’s address or figure out what to write. Months have gone by and perhaps it’s too late...you set out with the best intentions and that’s what counts, right? No, dear reader... intention is not nearly enough in regards to your thank-you cards. However, my goal is not to lecture on the manners on the day but rather offer insight and solutions. First step - organization is key. This seems like common sense but I can’t tell you how many brides cite a lost address as their reason for a delayed thank-you. As you are organizing names and address for your invitations, keep these handy for later reference when addressing your thank-you cards. Additional, task a friend or family member to track gifts when they are being open so you know what’s what. The case of a detached card? A card-less gift, should be set aside as well as lonely cards. After all gifts are open, attempt to pair the lost mates. No luck? Ask Mom or Dad if they have any idea... often guests will share planned gifts with family. A vague thank-you, not mentioning an exact gift may be another option in a pinch. What do you say? Sadly, technology has turned many of us into miserable writers that speak in code less than 140 characters. Knowing what to say can be another reason for delayed letter writing. Simple and sweet is my best recommendation... thank your guest for coming, making reference to a favorite part of the day (yours or what you might think their’s was) and bringing Item A (mentioning how you might use this, specifically if cash was given). Signed, sealed and delivered. Finally, writing 100 plus thank-you cards in one sitting is bound to make the grateful task into a surefire chore. Break up your thank-you notes, writing them over a few nights of must-see TV (with wine in hand!). And don’t forget the groom... last time I checked he’s capable of a thank-you, too. For the bride hard press for time or looking for inspiration there’s an app for that. Recently, I stumbled across Thankster.com, a site offering computer generated hand-written notes (in your penmanship, no less). While I still strongly argue for writing thank notes to wedding guests by hand (they were important enough to get an invitation, right?), this also offers a great resource for clever and thoughtful words of appreciation. Finally, politics aside, former President George W. Bush was said to begin every day in office hand writing thank you notes. Through waning popularity, economic collapse, two wars and a shaky legacy, he still found things to be thankful for everyday. That, if nothing else, tells us the power of a thank you. Terri Gennoe & Brian Morris March 5, 2011 Photography by The Lily Barn

love story: We worked together for over 7 years at Siemens Healthcare before we started dating. We have always been friends at work and found we seem to be saying and thinking the same things all the time. After we both went through similar experiences last year, we began talking and sharing our feelings on how we thought good relationships should work. It wasn’t a surprise that we had many similarities in our opinions. As corny as it sounds, we both feel like we’ve finally met our soul mate. THE big day: It was raining that morning and the forecast called for rain all day. I was worried about it, but once I arrived at the Lily Barn location, the rain stopped. It held off long enough to take the pre-ceremony pictures and remained dry all through the wedding ceremony. The sun even popped out right after the ceremony was completed as we gathered for family pictures outside. It didn’t begin again until we were packing the last item in the car after the reception. Also, I have a 5-year-old son who was part of the ceremony and he became nervous having to stand in front of everyone and began to cry. He spent most of the ceremony with his head buried in my side away from the congregation. The ceremony continued on, but it was still very special because we were all there together. the details: Brian and I completed the wedding favors together a few nights before the wedding filling little bags with Ghiradelli chocolates (our favorite). We also incorporated a sand blending ceremony into the wedding ceremony instead of a unity candle to represent the blending of our new lives together. We purchased 3 small vases - one for Brian, one for me and one for my son - and filled each with different colored sand. We also purchased a larger covered jar in which to blend our sand. My son thought it was fun like making sand art, but it represented so much more for Brian and me. We now have the blended “sand art” as a keepsake in our home to remind us of our wedding day. We chose to get married in front of a large fireplace in the pavilion at the Lily Barn since the weather in March can be unpredictable. We had a fire going during the ceremony and reception. The mantle was decorated with greenery and brightly colored spring flowers to match my bouquet and other flowers used in decorating the dining tables and buffet tables. Marriage and advice: I would certainly advise everyone to look into pre-marital counseling either with your minister or a professional counselor to get your marriage started on a solid foundation. Make sure that both the bride and groom has a part in planning the wedding. It makes the event more memorable for each of you.

our love story: It is quite remarkable, and no doubt with destiny’s hand, we met the few brief months Michael was living in Atlanta. Michael orignially born in London, England, but raised in Venezuela of a nomad since leaving Caracas at the age of 18 to attend Fresno State University. He has lived and worked in many countries and states--including Nashville, Tennessee! Luckily for us, he was just back in the states from living abroad in Scotland and England when we met at a local restaurant/bar with my friend Grace. the big day: So many things made me laugh and cry on the wedding day. First off, my bridesmaids continuously made me laugh and smile. They were great, if I needed a hot pink hair bow I think one of them would have pulled it out of their bag. They were all so prepared! Second, we thought the reception location caught on fire-black smoke started coming out of a heating vent during dinner. I still laugh about my mother whispering to me while dinner is being served, “Don’t be alarmed dear, but the fire department is on its way and we may have to evacuate”. For some reason, I thought this was hilarious. (False alarm due to a broken belt that burned up). Memorable moments would be our nephew carrying my bouquet around with a huge smile and asking if we wanted to smell the flowers (in his adorable British accent), also he sneaked over to the table we had the party favors for our guests. These were little chocolates from Venezuela in boxes. He ate about 10 boxes before anyone realized what he was doing--he was shutting the lids so no one knew. Other memorable moments (also made me laugh) dancing to the Venezuelan music. Almost everyone got up to dance (even our photographer) when we played our block of latin music. wedding planning: We were engaged 8 months, however I lived out of state the entire time. My mother was my wedding tool! She was our un-official wedding planner. She was wonderful with the difficult (not fun) details. I mainly asked for references from friends & acquaintances for vendors. I also looked through stacks of magazines and wedding websites for ideas. advice for brides-to-be: My best advice is do not get caught up in all the small details and get too stressed. Remember it is a big party! Second, I am not a terribly organized person, but I would place all my “wedding emails” in one folder and all “wedding receipts/ mail/papers” in a basket. This way if I could organize when I had the time and if needed rummage through when needed.

Hey

Grooms Don’t Say This During Wedding Planning!

“Sounds good, whatever you think.”

If it only mattered what your bride thought, than she wouldn’t take the time to ask you for an opinion. Contrary to popular culture, most brides desperately want their groom more involved with the wedding planning. While there will be some aspects that you have less of any opinion than others, it is important to not fall mute for majority of the major decisions. After all, a wedding is the first step in your new life together and I’m betting you want to have a say in that.

“How much?!”

Constant criticism of how much is being spent really takes the fun out of planning a wedding for all parties involved, particularly your bride. Instead, map out a budget that you can both agree on for the wedding so you both have a clear understanding of how much money is being spent where. With financial woos the number one precursor for divorce; start off on the right foot.

“I really wiped... I just want to chill. Can all this planning stuff wait?”

Let me clarify... grooms get a hall-pass on this statement a couple times. By the third, fourth, every time we ask for help and you responsed with another excuse to postpone, our patience is wearing thin. Brides see a mountain of work ahead of them when it comes to all the details of a wedding. From decor to family drama to slimming down for our dream dress, we see our own sacrifice everywhere and need you to pitch in. After all, the wedding is for the both of us.

“Didn’t I mention that? I must have forgot.”

It is important that both bride and groom are kept in each other’s loop regarding the wedding, guest’s travel plans and Mom’s sudden one-eighty considering her help with the rehearsal dinner. A wedding can be a logistical nightmare and “forgetting” to mention vital details can derail a timeline and add a lot of undue stress to your bride. When you have new wedding information, make a point to share this with your fiancé, pronto. I’m betting there’s an app for that...

“This really doesn’t matter to me. I don’t want to help.”

Agreed, tying ribbons around hundreds of wedding programs or filling custom seed packets for favors may not be your cup of tea. But your bride is excited and loves the details that make your day personal and heartfelt, including those that are somewhat time-consuming. And when you love a person you do things that are not important to you because they matter to the person who matters most to you.

Kari Padgett & Louis Poore 09.04.10 The Details: I knew I wanted a vintage-country theme for the wedding. I also knew I wanted to use blue mason jars, so everything started revolving around this. We used hay bales covered with family quilts for the ceremony, used the blue mason jars for the centerpieces, I used small mason jars filled with dried split peas to hold candles, mason jars for drinking glasses, burlap table runners, we hung pictures from string and clothespins from trees in the reception area. We used a vintage sewing machine to hold the programs and pictures of our grandparents who had passed away. I used a vintage green glass cake stand to hold the cake. We also did many DIY projects. I had seen an arbor in a magazine that I liked so Louis made one like it for us to use. My mom sewed the bags we used to put the favors in, we made the programs, and I made moss covered boxes for the beverage containers to sit on. I made signs from wood from my great-grandfather’s barn to direct the way. Family and friends help set up the ceremony, reception site, set up the reception tables, the tent...we did it all! My colors were purple and green. For the things I couldn’t make myself, I relied heavily on Etsy.com to find handmade things that would go perfectly with the wedding. My garter, button toss bouquet, and my custom made cake topper (so cute!) all came from sellers on Etsy. The Big Day: I was surprisingly calm the whole day. I enjoyed the whole day, but especially getting ready with the bridesmaids. That was so much fun! Louis enjoyed being kept hidden from me..we were at the same house most of the day. I actually didn’t cry the whole day. I started to tear up walking down the isle, but I was just so happy and excited to be getting married! The most memorable moment for me was my dad walking me down the isle and seeing Louis for the first time. Also, my mom came and helped me get into my wedding dress. The weather was unexpected in the sense that all summer it had been in the high 90s and it rained some the day before, but on the wedding day, it was perfect. It was in the low 70s, little humidity and not windy. Perfect weather for an outdoor wedding! Louis and I didn’t notice it, but we were told the owner’s dog was splashing around in the water feature while we were saying our vows. Advice: Advice on planning the wedding: Unless you have an unlimited budget, pick one or two things to splurge on and be budget friendly with the rest. If you have a vision that in not traditional, go with it. Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks. This is your day! Have fun! Marriage advice: Keep the Lord your top priority and always be willing to meet in the middle and talk it out.

Kelly Kohlbusch & Andy Huddleston September 19, 2010 Photography by Julie Roberts Photography

THE proposal story: Andy grew up in a neighborhood behind Rocky Hill Elementary School, and during our high school days together the park at this school became one of our favorite places to walk to. Those days could not compare, though, to the day he brought me there to hang out with nothing to do after my plans to babysit “fell through.” After a little while of swinging and shooting basketball, Andy told me he wanted to read me some of a book that he was having to read for school. He said it reminded him of me. So we sat down on some rocks and he began to read. The introduction was about love and, aside from the fact that it was written very well, I had no idea Andy had written it or much more, had written it with the intention to propose! As he read further, a story began of two people and it took no time for me to realize the story was about Andy and me. Since we had dated for almost six years at that point, the story was rather lengthy, but it gave me time to calm down and take in what was about to happen. It took us back through the joys and sweet experiences we had shared in our relationship. And it also looked back at the trials that the Lord brought us through to break us and build us back up so we could know Him more and love each other in ways we never could have without the trials. The last line of the book brought us to that moment at Rocky Hill, and it was that moment that Andy asked me to be his wife. I obviously said YES and we headed off to a surprise celebration with our family and friends for the rest of the night. We loved every second of that night it could not have gone any better! Wedding Decor: My favorite part about planning our wedding was the time I got to spend with my mom. The planning part can get pretty crazy and I was just thankful that I got to do it with her. We had a lot of fun through the process. I love yellow, so I knew it would be my main color but aside from that, I really didn’t have a plan. It was very hard to find the mustardy yellow I had in mind for the bridesmaids’ dresses, but after a lot of looking, I ended up being thrilled with what we found for them. We looked for navy suits for the groomsmen but when we came up short, we ended up going with gray suits and yellow ties. I looked through pictures of flowers with Lisa Foster and decided on putting some purples, pinks, and oranges for accent colors in the flowers. One of my favorite things about our wedding ending up being our colors! Andy also surprised me with an arbor for the ceremony that he built with a couple of his groomsmen. It was beautiful! He chopped down trees from our friend’s property for wood to build it. Then a couple of my friends and Lisa Foster did the final decorative touches with greenery, flowers, and candles on the wedding day. I absolutely loved it!

our love story: Howell and I met through mutual friends shortly after we both graduated from UT Knoxville. He is my best friend! Howell asked me to marry him the morning of Christmas Eve. I was in complete shock! the big day: It was amazing to have all of our friends and family in one place at the same time! Most of my family lives in Puerto Rico and has never visited Tennessee. I was so overwhelmed with joy that they could be here for my wedding! I cried when my dad stopped by the girl’s cabin to see me before the ceremony, and I cried when I read a card Howell sent over to me while I got ready. I laughed until I cried getting into my dress. It took my mom, sister, and best friend, who got stuck inside of the dress and wound up in the middle with me! And I laughed and cried while my bridesmaids sang crazy songs to me to keep me from crying before I walked down the aisle. planning for the wedding: We were engaged for 10 months. I did most of the planning with the help of my mom, sister, and of course, the groom! We also had some help from friends and family. We hired Peggy Love as our “day-of” coordinator. The most important thing for me was the ceremony itself. I wanted to be in the moment and take in the the vows and the beauty and excitement of a promise made before God, friends, and family. We felt so blessed to have so much love surrounding us on our special day. details: We wanted a whimsical outdoor wedding with a romantic and elegant feel. We knew we wanted to get married outside in the Fall and our location was perfect! The bridesmaid’s belts were handmade by my family. The mother of the groom made delicious cookies as our party favors. We used mainly earth tones like nude, ivory, and chocolate brown with hints of purple and green. advice for brides-to-be: My advice is to pick a date before the wedding after which you will delegate anything beyond that point. We were exhausted! Also, factor in extra guests when you make you initial budget. Otherwise, you might choose vendors based on a number that ends up being much higher than you originally anticipated. Also, we were so excited to get to Italy for our honeymoon, but it would have been nice to have a day or two in between to rest and pack so the days leading up to the wedding would be less stressful.

You’ve got questions and I have answers to your most common questions when booking and working with your wedding professionals. Let’s cut through the red tape and get to planning! by Pink Lady Krista at ThePinkBook.com

1

2

I ‘m getting overwhelmed by all these wedding emails! What can I do? First things first... set up a separate email account for your wedding planning. This will keep emails separate from your personal account and once you’re married, you can simply stop checking it. Check out MyBridemail for a wedding specific email service. What not to do? Don’t report the email as spam unless you are sure that it is. If you no longer wish to receive emails from a wedding professional, simply unsubscribe from the email (at the bottom of nearly all email newsletters) or contact the wedding professional directly asking to be removed from their list. Reporting an email as spam can limit a wedding professionals ability to email other brides and grooms that want the information.

Why don’t wedding professionals return my inquiries for more information? Generally speaking wedding professionals are busy. Really busy. Not an excuse for poor response time but professionals are human and should be given the benefit of doubt. Trust me... they want to talk with you. Many professionals have wised up to how busy they are, responding to inquiries with an automated response giving a time frame of when you should expect to hear from them. If you have not anything back from a wedding professional after 48 hours, considering contacting them again. Remember that emails get lost and phone messages cut out... just as the person calling is leaving a number. Still no word after a second try? Time to move on to wedding professionals that care about your business. Insider Tip: Speaking of time management... it is always a good idea to confirm a meeting with a wedding professional, particularly if this is scheduled to take place outside normal business hours. No-showing for an appointment is poor form!

Is it appropriate to let wedding professionals know that you have booked someone else?

3

Absolutely! Letting a professional know that you have decided to go with another wedding professional is definitely a good idea. Not only will this stop email follow-up but wedding professionals are able to release a date to other couples looking to book. Sending a short email will generally do the trick. If you feel so inclined giving a reason on why they weren’t the right fit professional is normally appreciated as well. Wedding professionals want to know how they can better serve future brides and grooms!

Is it true that wedding professionals charge more when it’s a wedding?

4

5

The answer is often yes... and it should be. While this may not seem fair, the difference in the amount of work related to a wedding vs. other social functions or corporate events is fairly significant. Often an event of similar size and budget for a retirement party or family reunion will require a third of the email and phone correspondence as a wedding. Corporate clients are even less and rarely ask for tastings, multiple meetings outside business hours and numerous proposals adjustments. All this increases the overall time a professional spends when working with brides and grooms and since time is money, weddings cost more. If this still doesn’t seem right, ask your wedding professionals to explain why they charge more. They should be able to explain why so it makes sense to their clients. If not... go with a professional that has fair pricing policies.

My wedding wedding professional is not returning my calls and I’m not happy with their services! Isn’t that a breach of contract?! Ideally, no bride or groom would ever have to deal with a poor performance by a wedding professional, during or after the planning process. While I am not a legal expert, I have been on the both sides of this fence. Before you do anything, take a good look at the contract and cancellation fees. While few contracts will address customer service, a client always reserves the right to cancel their agreement. This will likely result in a loss of your initial deposit and could send you on a frantic last minute hunt for a wedding professional. Instead, I suggest sitting down with your wedding professional for a heart to heart on your concerns. Stay calm and offer suggestions for how your problems can be addressed. Avoid being overly dramatic and attacking a wedding professional as it will get you nowhere, fast. If possible, ask to work with another employee that might better mesh with you personally or ask to speak with a general manager or owner. If no solution is in sight, follow your gut and find a new professional. Better to lose a small deposit than have a wedding professional disaster on your big day. Note: The closest wedding day is, the higher the cancellation fee with likely be. Address your apprehensions when they occur, rather than wait until a budget crunch leaves you little option other than to hope things will work out. Small Claims Court can be some help here but probably not in time for wedding day.

KRISTEN REEVES & NICHOLAS KESSLER March 12, 2011 Photography by Katherine Birkbeck Photography

PROPOSAL STORY: Seven months after we had started dating, my boss told me we were taking a trip that Friday to North Carolina on a work trip. As I realized on Friday, we were headed to Brevard, NC to a camp that has one of my favorite places in the world in it. It’s an outdoor chapel that overlooks the mountains called “Pretty Place.” I was so convinced we were there for work that I never dreamed it would all be a ploy, but sure enough as I walked into the outdoor chapel, Nick was standing at the end of the aisle in front of a beautiful view of the North Carolina countryside. I couldn’t believe my eyes! There, he dropped to his knee and asked me to be his wife. I, of course, said yes! THE BIG DAY: We had a blast on our wedding day! Using the same location for the rehearsal dinner and reception, served as a home base for all of our family and friends the whole weekend. I spent the night there with my bridesmaids Friday night, staying up late talking and laughing about the day ahead and what marriage would be like. Saturday was surprisingly laid back. One of my favorite memories was getting ready in our suite surrounded by my best friends. I will never forget the time I spent just waiting for the ceremony to start in a little room with my bridesmaids and my mom. We sat in a circle and each of them prayed for me and my marriage to Nick. It was such a sweet moment! I quickly found out that waterproof mascara does not always live up to its claims! Everything that preceded the reception was great and meaningful, but nothing compared to the fun we had there! We had an amazing band that got everyone dancing. My favorite highlight hands down from the reception came when Nick joined with the band and serenaded me with “My Girl.” I had no idea he was such a performer! It was a perfect night with our family and friends.
