Lauren Hays & Robert Hendrix 10.20.12 THE PROPOSAL: Robert proposed on July 1, 2011. We had what I thought was a 4th of July barbecue planned with his family that afternoon, but when I walked in I was more than surprised. There sits both of our families. My dad and step-mom had driven in from out of town, my mom and his whole family were there. I immediately knew what was going on. Robert got on one knee in front of everyone and proposed. Good thing I said YES!! We had a beautiful engagement cake and champagne to celebrate after the party. It was special that our families could be there and share in such a memorable night for us! WEDDING DETAILS: I guess you could say that I am a very traditional bride. I envisioned a wedding that was very elegant and romantic…..but fun! The Cadre Building was the perfect setting. During the ceremony, instead of doing flowers behind us, we were surrounded by candles. This gave off the most romantic glow. Our color was teal, and we had beautiful fall flowers in burnt orange, yellow and lime green. We did a few DIY projects. My mom, maid of honor and I designed and made the invitations, and I designed and printed the programs. For all of our guests from out of town, we had welcome bags that we had put together. We included a Memphis magnet, Rendezvous shaker, a pair of Elvis sunglasses, a map, a “hangover kit” for the next day and various snacks. During the reception, the dance floor was positioned right in the middle of the room, and boy, was it a party! The band had the house rocking until they finally kicked us out. At the end of the party, we rode away in a carriage to our hotel room. Talk about a fairy tale ending! WEDDING DAY: We started off the day getting our hair done. I had men’s button-up shirts with everyone’s initials made so that we didn’t mess up our hair. We came back to the Cadre where we had our make-up done and goofed around until it was time to have pictures taken. The girls and I danced around the room, mainly to calm my nerves. Robert and I did a first look which was so much fun. The day was so hectic and the first look gave us some time to ourselves to relax right before the wedding. Rev. Andy Savage gave the most beautiful ceremony, and to my surprise neither one of us cried. We were so happy and at ease in that moment.

DIY Wedding:
assume you will save money Not all DIY projects will put your wedding budget in the black. Project costs can quickly add up as mistakes and miscalculations have you purchasing extra supplies and especially if you end up throwing in the towel and hiring a pro at the last minute. In the end, it can be cheaper and easier to work with a professional from the get-go, saving you the hassle, time and wasted money.
be realistic about your craftiness keep in mind you are responsible for setup (and clean-up) After spending weeks creating personal favors, programs and menu cards, these items must move from living room to wedding venue. I can’t tell you how many exhausted DIYers come wedding week are stuck setting out and cleaning up these projects on wedding day. But you don’t have to be. Give yourself a break, and see if your wedding planner, caterer or venue staff can take over the set-up (and clean up!). Most will be more than happy to help, leaving you to sit back and enjoy your wedding.
I have a love/hate relationship with Martha Stewart. With ethereal precision, she makes even the most tedious and complicated of crafts appear effortlessly mundane and obvious. I have learned that I am no Martha... none of us are. Find DIY success by being realistic about your crafting skills (and available time). With so many other things to worry about on wedding day, aspiring to be a professional shouldn’t be one of them.
try something for the first time Procrastinate The second most common mistake (after assuming you’re a crafting goddess) is waiting until the last minute. Case and point, it took me almost 8 months to stop thinking about refinishing my desk and getting to it. And I am still contemplating changing out the drawer pulls. Decoupaging hundreds of tiny votives placecards seems easy enough. Until you are wrist-deep in white goop, pulling all-nighters leading up to wedding day while you second guess the finished look. Assume all wedding-related crafting will take much longer than expected. Worse-case scenario, you can still hand things off to the pros if finishing looks unlikely.
I catch myself saying all the time, “Well, that looks easy enough!” Of course I needed 40 grit sandpaper, not 80! Yeah... so I don’t even know the real difference between 40, 80 or under what circumstances they are most appropriate. While I have no problem bumbling through trial-and-error projects, likely never to see the light of day, weddings are different. Under immense stress to figure out how all this wedding planning works, learning a new skill within the same timeline can be overwhelming. Save yourself the stress and hand off first-time projects to professionals.

Steps To The Best Wedding Celebration Ever
by Pink Lady Andrea
If you dream of throwing the wedding of the decade, plan an event that focuses on honoring your guests throughout the evening. Follow the ten great tips below to planning a celebration your guests with thank you for later – and talk about for years to come!
1. Welcome your guests in style.
Besides stepping into a cozy, clean hotel room after a long day driving or flying to your wedding location, give your guests fashionable treats to make them feel more at home – and welcome! Include everything from local snacks and bottled water to area maps and information on local attractions. They’ll love relaxing with these treats before the festivities!
2. Choose an interesting locale.
Get expressive with where you tie the knot. This can be anywhere from your local zoo to even a museum or gallery nearby. Don’t limit your celebration to traditional venues! Guests will love the unique characteristics of your day because of the one-of-a-kind feel of the location.
3. Keep guests comfortable.
If you’re having an outdoor celebration during summer months, install fans to keep guests cool, and consider fan programs as wedding favors. If it’s during the winter, install heaters to keep the space warm and serve warm drinks. Rest rooms should be nearby no matter where your event is, and you should keep a check on the air conditioning and heat if your venue is indoors. The point is to never let your guests become uncomfortable!
4. Involve them in the ceremony.
Kick off the ceremony with a signature beverage as guests arrive, and allow them to sip and chat before the processional begins. This is a surefire way to break the ice and drum up conversations that will last throughout the evening. Not sure what to serve? A cool, refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) during warm months would be great, and good, old-fashioned hot chocolate would be wonderful during the cooler months. You can also ask guests to give you advice for wedded bliss as you start your new life together.
5. The transition from ceremony to reception should be quick.
Let’s face it: if guests have to travel more than 30 minutes between your ceremony and reception site, or if they have to wait that long for your arrival to begin celebrating, they won’t really be in the partying mood by the time the reception starts. Choose venues that are near each other for your ceremony and reception, and cater your timeline to making sure your guests are entertained.
6. Let your guests make a grand entrance.
Treat them to a rock-star arrival by having each guest ushered into the reception hall with drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and lively music. This makes them feel like a true part of the celebration and sets a vibrant tone for the rest of the evening!
7. Keep them interested with a full itinerary.
The party should never hit a lull where guests sneakily start checking their watches. Make sure you’ve got plenty lined up for their entertainment by dispersing special dances, speeches, and toasts throughout the evening. Also consider having a photo booth near for guests to enjoy! Constantly change things up, rather than having long stretches of time with the same activity.
8. Food and beverages are the key to a great celebration.
People tend to chat more and feel more comfortable when food and drinks are involved, so make sure you foster that great sense of welcome and hospitality by ensuring that they always have something to snack on and drink throughout the evening. Ask your caterer to provide servers who will mingle with the guests, refreshing plates and drinks regularly.
9. Dance the night away with great entertainment. One of the biggest details of throwing the celebration of a lifetime depends upon your entertainment choice – meaning your band or DJ. This is so much more than just playing music! A professional band or DJ will be able to read the crowd and play music that will either get them up and dancing or relax them. If you want your guests talking about your celebration for years, put some work into finding the perfect entertainment choice!
10. Plan the after-party!
Give your more party-friendly crowd somewhere to take their dancing shoes after the big exit at the reception. Plan an after-party! This can be at a nearby locale, and food, beverages, and entertainment should be in ample supply. Just make sure that you have important numbers handy in case you need to call someone a cab or need to get in touch with someone fast!
Wellesley Wheeler & Thomas Fitzhugh 11.10.12 THE PROPOSAL: One of the happiest days of my life was the day Tom proposed. In the fall of 2011, Tom began to plan a trip for us to New York City. He planned the whole thing- hotel, restaurants, and even a Broadway show. We arrived on a Thursday morning and, after checking into our hotel, had lunch at the Central Park Boathouse. After lunch, Tom suggested we walk around the park for a bit. It was a beautiful fall day, and the leaves had just begun to turn. Tom led me to the top of a grassy hill and began saying the most heartfelt and sweet things to me. Before I knew it he was down on one knee asking me to be his wife! After many tears and hugs, we headed back to our hotel to celebrate with champagne and chocolate covered strawberries (another surprise from Tom). It couldn’t have been a more perfect proposal!

WEDDING PLANNING: Tom and I were engaged for a little over a year. Looking back, it seems like we were engaged forever! But it was probably for the best considering we were planning from Washington D.C. While I did a lot of the research, planning, and decision making on my own, I had a lot of help from family and friends. I also had a wedding planner, Amy Miller Weddings & Events. I relied on her for vendor recommendations and meetings, as well as day of coordination. She did a great job ensuring that everything went smoothly! It was very important to me that our guests had a good time and enjoyed the food, music, drinks, and atmosphere! The vision for our wedding was based upon two defining factors. I wanted it to feel southern and I wanted it to feel traditional. For example, we chose a traditional jazz/swing band for the entertainment, but for food we kept it as southern as possible, with things like mac and cheese, pecan pie, and BBQ in mason jars. We had a fun outdoor seating area on the porch where we used hay bales and quilts for seating, in addition to traditional table and chairs. My all time favorite wedding detail was our University of Tennessee tailgating tent. Because we got married on a game day, I wanted to surprise Tom with a UT tailgate, complete with tailgating food, coolers of beer, personalized koozies, and loads of UT decor! We even had a TV playing UT football! We didn’t engage in many DIY projects, just a few chalkboard signs and putting together bags of birdseed for our send-off. Our wedding colors were neutral; lots of ivory, champagne, and pale blush. We had some color incorporated outside, with fun yellow gingham linens and family quilts, but for the most part things were soft and neutral.

to Make the Most
WAYS
of Bridal Shows
You’re engaged, and now it is time to start planning… With so many things to see and vendors to talk to, wedding shows can be overwhelming and feel a bit like, well, the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Savvy brides see through the chaos and make the most of what bridal shows have to offer by way of inspiration, advice and vendor giveaways. With these 7 tips, you can too!
•1•
Come prepared. The boy scouts were on to something here… Make sure you have the essentials. Have a pen to take notes and sign up for all the wedding day give-aways. Better yet, pre-print mailing labels with your name, phone number, email and wedding date to save a ton of time. Also, remember to bring your camera to capture all the wedding inspiration on display… vendors are putting their best decorating foot forward and you will want to remember everything you saw.
•2•
Don’t eat (a lot!) before you come. Weddings have food, and so do wedding shows. Caterers and bakers use this opportunity to showcase great samples of their food, so hold off on lunch & come hungry!
•3•
Leave the little ones at home. Children have small attention spans and even with all the cake samples will quickly lose interest becoming dead weight. It is distracting to have fussy or bored children (or adults!) in your party while you are walking the show floor and trying to talk with vendors. Think carefully about who will join you on wedding show day.
•4•
Do your homework. It’s worthwhile to familiarize yourself with the services you are still seeking, what questions to ask and who is exhibiting at the show. This helps to maximize the time you have at each booth which can sometimes be limited with busy shows and popular vendors. Having other details, such as your wedding date or budget mapped out, are also helpful… You don’t want to fall in love with a vendor only to find out that they are booked on your wedding date or out of your price range.
•5•
Come ready to make a deal. Many of the vendors will offer show-only discounts and specials for brides ready to book. If you have done your research and have your checkbook in hand, the savings will add up fast. Keep in mind that vendors are not as busy during the fashion show, so if you have your dress, use this time to talk one-on-one.
•6•
These boots are made for comfort. Remember the show floor is big with lots of walking, so leave the heels for later that night and wear comfy shoes!
•7•
FREE tickets! Many local vendors are given free show tickets to hand out to perspective brides that they would like to personally invite to the show. If you plan to set up meetings with vendors before the show, make sure to ask if they will have a booth, and you just may get free tickets.

Six Steps to
Choosing the Wedding Cake Dig in to the perfect wedding cake on your big day by following these simple steps! by Pink Lady Andrea
1
Always, always, always do cake tastings!
2
Look around at different styles and designs, and have an idea of how you want your cake to look before you meet with your baker to nail down a design.
A cake can look beautiful and still taste horrible. Taste each baker’s cake prior to placing a deposit!
Have two or three ideas available to discuss, and see what his or her opinion is on the best style and design for your guest count.
3
Be aware of food allergies.
4
Know how many guests are planning to attend.
5
Choose the shape of each tier next or decide upon a design from step two.
Do you or your future hubby have a food allergy of some sort? Be sure to tell your baker about any allergies or dietary restrictions you may have before going further.
Once you have your guest count, your baker can tell you how many tiers your cake should have. If you want to save the top tier, you may need an additional or larger tier.
Your baker may provide multiple options for tier shapes if you would like to build a custom look, or you can begin discussing what you love about the designs you found.
6
Choose your cake flavors, fillings, and icing! Keep in mind that your baker may suggest using fondant for certain cake designs or outdoor weddings. This could change how much your cake costs as well as the way your cake tastes, so be aware of this before moving forward. Once that is settled, choose which flavor, filling, and icing combo is just perfect for you!

HeyGrooms
Don’t Say This During Wedding Planning! “Sounds good, whatever you think.”
If it only mattered what your bride thought, than she wouldn’t take the time to ask you for an opinion. Contrary to popular culture, most brides desperately want their groom more involved with the wedding planning. While there will be some aspects that you have less of any opinion than others, it is important to not fall mute for a majority of the major decisions. After all, a wedding is the first step in your new life together, and I’m betting you want to have a say in that.
“How much?!”
Constant criticism of how much is being spent really takes the fun out of planning a wedding for all parties involved, particularly your bride. Instead, map out a budget that you can both agree on for the wedding so you both have a clear understanding of how much money is being spent where. Financial woes are the number-one precursor for divorce; start off on the right foot.
“I’m really whipped... I just want to chill. Can all this planning stuff wait?”
Let me clarify... grooms get a hall-pass on this statement a couple times. By the third, fourth, every time we ask for help and you respond with another excuse to postpone, our patience wears thin. Brides see a mountain of work ahead of them when it comes to all the details of a wedding. From decor to family drama to slimming down for our dream dress, we see our own sacrifice everywhere and need you to pitch in. After all, the wedding is for the both of us.
“Didn’t I mention that? I must have forgotten.”
It is important that both bride and groom are kept in each other’s loop regarding the wedding, guests’ travel plans and Mom’s sudden one-eighty considering her help with the rehearsal dinner. A wedding can be a logistical nightmare, and “forgetting” to mention vital details can derail a timeline and add a lot of undue stress to your bride. When you have new wedding information, make a point to share this with your fiancé, pronto. I’m betting there’s an app for that...
“This really doesn’t matter to me. I don’t want to help.”
Agreed, tying ribbons around hundreds of wedding programs or filling custom seed packets for favors may not be your cup of tea. But your bride is excited and loves the details that make your day personal and heartfelt, including those that are somewhat time-consuming. And when you love a person you do things that are not important to you because they matter to the person who matters most to you.
Emily Chilson & Douglas Grabowski
Emily Chilson & Douglas Grabowski 10.13.12 Wedding Details: Our vision from day one was just to make sure that our guests would have a great time. I wanted classic elegance while making sure our guests would be comfortable. I worked with my mom, Donna Chilson, as well as Toni Williams at Spring Creek Ranch to bring everything to life. Doug and I are stationed in New Mexico with the U.S. Air Force, so all I could do was show them pictures of what I liked, choose from the options they gave me, and then hope for the best. I had no doubts whatsoever that they would create the most gorgeous wedding imaginable. (They did!) I had the hardest time choosing a color because I love them all. Originally, I went with black and white, and then Doug said I should go with pink because he knows it’s my all-time favorite. So the entire wedding party was in black and white while we used the flowers, decorations, and lighting to add touches of pink in all shades – from blush to bashful, as they would say in Steel Magnolias. It was gorgeous. Both of my grandpas have passed away, so I did a couple small things for them. I bought two tiny picture frames that could be tied to my bouquet and put each of their pictures in it. I also used one of their Bibles instead of a pillow for the ring bearer to carry the rings on. Wedding Day: Toni at Spring Creek Ranch was wonderful and might as well have been our overall wedding planner with all the details she took care of. I think the biggest hit at our reception was the photo booth! The girls with Hotshot Photobooths were so friendly and brought a chest of goofy costumes for the guests to dress up in. Our big day was perfect and more amazing than I could have imagined. Being surrounded by your family and your closest friends is a dream in and of itself. Add to that the fact that you’re promising your life to your best friend, and I would say you’re practically in heaven. Advice: I think you have to remember to make yourself laugh leading up to the ceremony – don’t take everything too seriously. Laugh with your bridesmaids and take goofy pictures along with the typical wedding photos.

how to
Choose Your Bridesmaids Wisely
This no-drama guide will help you quit stressing over which ladies to choose for your bridal party! “Why did I ever ask her to be a bridesmaid? She’s insane!”
I cannot tell you how often I have heard these words from brides a month or two before their wedding. For whatever reason – be it number of attendants on the groom’s side, stress, or guilty association – some brides twist themselves in knots over which girls to choose for bridesmaids or (gasp!) the Maid of Honor. In a haste to make everyone who thinks she should be part of your bridal party happy, you ask ladies you really do not know well. Before you know it, you have a small army of attendants you rarely see until just before the wedding. Not cool! Every decision you make about your attendants can have a resounding effect on the moods surrounding the festivities both before and during your wedding day. Keep the following quick tips in mind before popping the big question to your girls!
1. Choose a friend or family member who will take being your bridesmaid seriously.
This means she will try to move her schedule around to help with your DIY tasks when she can, will listen to you rant about your wedding woes (but will stop you before you go over the edge!), and will even help plan your bridal shower. Then, she will actually commit to being at the shower. Make sure the lady you ask is tons of fun and would be willing to cut-up to relieve your stress - but she truly must be dependable, too. If someone you have in mind tends to RSVP to your get-togethers or parties and then doesn’t come, and you learn about the other party she went to instead via photos on Facebook, she is likely not bridesmaid material…no matter how fun she can make a party (if she actually arrives).
2. Choose attendants you can see yourself having strong friendships with well into the future.
Harsh as it sounds, asking ladies you do not expect to continue friendships with after you are married ultimately dates your
wedding. Honor your closest friends and family with this role – not the girls in your best friend’s group with whom you rarely spoke.
3. You do not have to have the same number of attendants on both sides.
So what if your groom has five guys, and you only chose four girls? It is really not that big of an issue. Leave your number where it is if it means you might ask someone you will regret choosing later. Keep in mind that having more maids means more bouquets, more bridal party gifts, and more miscellaneous costs, too.
4. Scared that choosing a Maid of Honor will hurt someone else’s feelings?
Do not be. The other ladies should understand that it is not necessarily a game of favorites. (Okay…maybe it is. Just a little.) If feelings do get hurt, let your other maids know that you chose your MOH for her planning and visionary abilities. You probably also chose her for her ability to nip drama in the bud before it starts, which is a must with almost any group of girls in a high-stress situation! The day is about you, and your MOH will be with you more than anyone else throughout the day. In other words, it is okay to have favorites here.
5. Think of the bottom line in the end!
Getting married is one of the most exhilarating experiences of your life. Cherish it with the ladies who have made your journey more meaningful because they have been a part of it! When it comes to choosing your attendants, I always say to think before you ask. Sleep on it. Chat with your future hubby about it. In the end, only pick the girls you are closest to. After all, if you are close to someone, you likely already know if she is “insane,” and you can save yourself the unpleasant surprise of finding out later! by Pink Lady Andrea

Love Story: We met freshman year at Alabama through a mutual friend and would joke with each other when we crossed paths on campus or in our dorm buildings. We went on our first date sophomore year, after he asked in a variety of creative ways – over a PA system in his car, in a Texas Country serenade, during study sessions, and while driving me to class. Exactly three years later, he proposed at Northriver Yacht Club on a hill overlooking Lake Tuscaloosa, a special spot where we picnicked on anniversaries. Shortly after, we celebrated with our friends and family at a surprise engagement party in Birmingham.

Wedding Details: We were engaged for 10 months, and I could not have planned such a magical wedding without a dream team of helpers – my crafty mom, creative mother-in-law, supportive bridesmaids, productive fiancé, handy brother, and a very generous dad. Our vendors were impressive and went “above and beyond” to execute my vision. Amy Miller passed along a timeline that I followed exactly, in addition to a few extra items I added. More than having everything in place and the evening flow smoothly, we wanted our wedding to be a spiritual experience where everyone felt engaged in our commitment and inspired by it. Above all, Mark and I wanted our wedding guests to feel a part of our love, share in our overflowing joy, and notice special details that told stories about us. Our rustic summer wedding was brought to life by Heartwood Hall through “shabby-chic” décor, a wide range of pastel flowers, twigs, lacecovered votives, antique finds, burlap, mercury glass, and heirloom crocheted linens from my family. My brother constructed and stained bean bag tosses for guests to play outside. We made a travel vignette in one of the corners with suitcases, photos from trips, and a map with pins of all the places we’ve traveled together. The dresses were guava and slate blue, and the reception contained those colors as well as warm neutrals, pops of yellow and green succulents. Wedding Day: One of the most memorable moments of the wedding day was feeling giddy standing with my dad right before the doors opened, then seeing Mark’s face as the music swelled and trumpets played. Other sweet moments were holding hands with Mark before the ceremony, swing dancing with my brother, and running through sparklers as we exited. I laughed hardest when dancing on stage “getting low” with my mom and mother-in-law and cried while hugging my dad during our father-daughter dance as “What a Wonderful World” played. After the wedding, we had a blast looking through the photo booth pictures and fill-in-the-blank card responses.

Katherine Bryant & Mark Strausser 09.01.12 Love Story: Several years ago, while Mark was living in Denver, we became friends on Facebook. We kept in touch off and on, and Mark often asked me questions about who I was dating (we had mutual friends). Later, Mark moved back to Nashville to finish his MBA. During this time, he suggested that I go on a date with one of his best friends in Memphis. I hadn’t dated anyone in a while, but reluctantly agreed. While waiting for this date to happen, Mark came to Memphis over Labor Day weekend. Some friends and I met him out one night while he was in town, and I finally admitted to him that I wished he had been the one asking me out, not his friend. Needless to say, he was shocked by my admission...and seemed a little pleased. Fast forward two years. Mark’s sister Kristy called me in October 2011 and suggested that we throw him a surprise 35th birthday party. I agreed, and the planning began. His birthday is New Year’s Eve, so we planned the party for the Friday night before. We planned for months, and finally, the night came. I thought I was being so smooth getting Mark to the party without him finding out and, as we walked in, I reminded him that I loved him. His response was, “You have no idea how much I love you.” And so the surprise party began...or so I thought. Later in the evening, Kristy and I went to get the birthday cake so we could sing to him. After Mark blew out his candles, I noticed his dad standing by the DJ with a microphone. He asked Mark in front of all of our guests, “What did you wish for, Mark?” This is when he stood up, grabbed the mic, and said “Katie, everyone here tonight knows that this isn’t a surprise birthday party for me...” This is when he pulled out a ring and, in front of all of our family and friends, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. He had been behind all of it, and I never had a clue. I couldn’t ask for a more magical story. Wedding Details: Mark and I were engaged for 8 months, almost to the day. We didn’t “technically” hire a wedding planner. My sister Becky is an incredible event planner and immediately took hold of this project. With the help of her and my entire family, we began to put the pieces together and, obviously, it worked. The most important thing to us about our wedding was to savor every moment, truly appreciate the help and support of those who love us, and to remember the real purpose – to commit our lives to one another. I won’t necessarily say that there was a “theme” for our wedding and reception. The vision was to create a classic, almost vintage setting. This began with our black and white Save the Date photo, and we carried the feeling throughout with invitations, flowers, lots of vintage glass, grays, cremes, and various shades of peach (from pale to vibrant), cummerbunds, lace...it was perfect! My family and I made the guest bags for out-of-town guests and delivered them to their hotel rooms prior to the wedding.

Brittany Johnson & Saul Hernandez 12.15.12 Love Story: Saul and Brittany were introduced to each other by a mutual friend on the fourth of July in 2007. Saul was hosting a party on the rooftop of his apartment building to watch the national fireworks show in DC. He had seen Brittany around work and asked his friend to bring her to the party and, as they say, the rest is history!
Brittany Johnson & Saul Hernandez
Wedding Details: We were engaged for a little over a year. We hired Amy Miller to plan our wedding from top to bottom. I knew that planning a Memphis wedding all the way from Washington, DC, was going to be too much work to do on my own. Traveling back in to town every other week to meet with vendors just wasn’t a realistic possibility, so I was happy to turn over much of my planning needs to Amy. Since we had so many guests coming in from out of town, it was really important to us that they get to experience a little Memphis at our wedding. Our caterer really stepped up to the plate with bar-b-que and fried green tomato BLT sliders. They also whipped up a huge amount of our favorite, gruyere macaroni and cheese, so we could offer a complete Southern meal to our guests. Saul and I wanted to go for a white and gold winter wedding. My biggest request was for a giant Christmas tree that would act as our guest book. Instead of people signing a page in the book, we put out glass ornaments and markers so each of our guests could help us decorate our first Christmas tree. Now we have enough ornaments to hang on our tree for years to come, and we will get to re-read our guest book every Christmas! Wedding Advice: My best advice to other brides and grooms is to surround yourself with friends and family throughout the wedding planning process. I couldn’t have done it without the gracious help of my mom’s best friends.

Abigail Hanson & Steven Whittington 11.24.12
Behind the Story
Love Story: Steven and I grew up in the same hometown of Geneseo, IL. We dated when we were in 8th grade till Sophomores in High School. We remained close friends throughout the rest of high school and began dating after our high school graduation. Steven went to Iowa State University and I was attending University of Illinois and we went four years in a long distance relationship. Steven popped the question while I was interning in Des Moines, Iowa. We had a lovely dinner out and walked around the downtown. He stopped in the middle of the sidewalk and got down on one knee and told me how much he loved me and that he wanted me in his life forever. I said Yes! and the wedding plans began. Wedding Details: We were engaged for 8 months and received much help from my family. My Matron of Honor, Katie Chase, came down a month before to help finish with the final wedding details. We did not hire a wedding planner and used my mother and sisters to complete all the wedding details. The most important thing about our wedding was the photographer - I wanted to ensure that we had beautiful pictures for everlasting memories. The theme of our wedding was nature. We wanted to find a venue that captured the outdoors as we both love being outside. Spring Creek Ranch with the golf course situated amongst many trees and buildings having large windows allowed us to feel a part of nature. For our flowers, we wanted something unique and used sedums and lots of greenery to enhance the nature vibe. Wedding Day: I was able to contain my tears until my dad gave his speech about how lucky he was to marry the love of his life. We planned for an outdoor wedding and of course the only weekend that had cold temperatures in the 30/40s was our wedding weekend. We still had it outside and brought extra blankets for the guests. Once dancing began all the guests warmed up quickly.

Five Adorable
Bridal Shower Themes These unique shower ideas offer tons of fun, laughter, and gifts for the bride!
1. Alphabet Bridal Shower
4. Pajama Spa Shower
Assign each guest a letter in the bride-to-be’s full (married!) name. Then, have the guests purchase items from her registry, wrap the gift, and decorate it with the letter they were assigned. As gifts arrive, spell out the bride’s name! Let her new monogram be your decorating inspiration. If guests are really creative, they can try to find a gift on her registry that corresponds with their letter. Guest favors could be hanging initial ornaments with the first initial of each guest’s name.
Have guests wear their pajamas, put a bunch of pillows on the floor, and shower the bride-to-be with spa-related items! Then put on a good chick flick and indulge in giving each other manicures, pedicures, and facials well into the evening while you snack on comfort foods. Guest favors could be nail polish in the bride’s wedding colors!
2. Around-the-House Shower
Guests can write their favorite recipes on cards and give to the bride along with gifts of non-perishable foods needed to prepare the recipe in a (reusable!) gift basket. Alternatively, guests can give an appliance used in the dish’s creation. Another favorite way of conducting this shower is to have guests prepare each dish to bring to the shower for everyone to eat! Guest favors could be cute cookie-cutters or mini whisks.
Assign each guest a room in the house to purchase an item for from her registry. Decorations should be in the bride’s favorite color to accent her home. Serve foods she loves! Guest favors could be little key necklaces.
3. Honeymoon Shower Encourage guests to purchase gifts for the bride and groom via their honeymoon registry. Alternatively, give guests the option of purchasing a gift that would celebrate their honeymoon location, like flip-flops, sunglasses, or signature drink mixes. Wrapping paper and decorations could follow the honeymoon destination theme! Guest favors could be a keychain with the destination theme – like a mini Eiffel Tower or sand in a bottle.
5. Stock the Pantry Shower

Bethany Mayberry & Ryan Veach 11.03.12 LOVE STORY: Ryan and Bethany met in January of 2007 through a mutual friend while they were both students at Ole Miss. Bethany was planning on recording some music in a local studio and needed a drummer, so she asked her friend (who had been helping her write music) if he knew of anyone, thus prompting an invitation for Ryan to play on the tracks. Ryan jumped at the opportunity, and a friendship began.
Bethany Mayberry & Ryan Veach
Over the course of the next 12 months, Bethany and Ryan happened to work together on two separate political campaigns, and the friendship grew. Finally, at a Battle of the Bands in April of 2008 (which Ryan’s band won), there was a spark between the two: the hint of something more profound. A month later, they had one more chance meeting (with the help of some scheming friends): a wedding at which Bethany was the photographer and Ryan the best man. Love was in the air, and the timing was just right. Ryan asked Bethany on their first date. On June 15, 2008, Bethany and Ryan became Facebook official! WEDDING DETAILS: We were engaged for 11 months. My mom was my rock throughout the wedding planning process. I wouldn’t have made it through the planning without her. The vision for our big day was ‘timeless’. I didn’t want to choose any colors that would look outdated 20 years from now. So we chose looks that are classic now, and have been classic for a long time. Long black dresses will never go out of style, and they were beautiful on my girls. The guys were in tuxedos - which will always be a classic look. My dress was timeless as well - and had a slight royal feel to it which was fitting since we were in a palace. We also incorporated just a little color by having antique blush pink roses. Since my new last name was Veach, I also wanted to play off the theme ‘Life is Peachy as a Veachy’. We had peaches in tall clear vases of water as our centerpieces, and peach candles were lit to fill the air with my favorite scent. We made our programs, the wedding card box, and since my husband is a wonderful baker, we made 300 of my favorite chocolate chip cookies and put them in CD sleeves sealed with stickers that we made. Chris at the Pink Palace was incredible. He kept everything under control!! And he doesn’t let you feel the stress of the day!

LOVE STORY: We met at a local hangout called Loves in February 2008. A girlfriend asked me to go out with her and a group of girls. We met up with her fiancé who was out with a group of guys. Mike asked my friend, Brittany, why she hadn’t brought me out before while I asked her fiancé, Kenneth, if Mike was single. He asked for my number that night and we had our first date on Valentine’s Day.
Rachel Francis& Michael Smith
From the first time marriage was brought up in our relationship, Mikey always said he would never propose on a holiday. So what better way to surprise me that proposing on the biggest holiday of the year, Christmas. We stayed the night at my parent’s house so we could wake up that morning and have Christmas with my family. After everything died down and everyone was going back through all their presents I noticed one present under the tree. I went over and saw there wasn’t a tag on it, I turned around and asked if anyone knew whose it was. I know now that everyone went into a panic since I wasn’t supposed to see it yet. Mikey told me that he thought it was for me and I should open it. It was a beautiful alphabet photo art with the name Smith. He asked me to turn it over. There was a sweet letter from him talking about how wonderful our relationship is and how happy and in love he is with me. It took me forever to read the letter through all the crying and looking around to see everyone staring at me. The letter ended by saying he was going to tell me the rest personally. We hugged and he set the photo down. He talked about how wonderful this day is and how special it is to be spending it with family. He said there is only one thing that could make it even better... He asked my grandfather for the ring. Mikey had given it to him to hold the night before. My grandfather reached into his pocket and pulled out the case, Mikey got down on one knee in front of my parents, brothers, and grandfather and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. It meant the world to me that he included my family, especially my grandfather. WEDDING DETAILS: We were engaged almost 9 months. The most important things about my wedding were all the small details; a single hydrangea in memory of my grandmother who passed away my senior year of high school, my grandfather’s dog tags wrapped around my bouquet. My vision was luxe and chic and I knew exactly what I wanted. The reception exceeded my expectations with all the small details. The beautiful ivory tables with the ivory and green hydrangeas. The colors of ivory and green with accents of purple. Everything was breathtaking.

BRIDAL MYTHS
Debunked!
Is wedding advice coming at you from every angle? Determine what’s fact and what’s fiction by debunking these common wedding myths.
1
IT’S NOT REALLY A WEDDING IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW TRADITION. The first person to buck tradition and wear white was Queen Victoria (that’s right...brides have not always worn white). This is now taken for granted as standard attire as is a wedding cake, first dance, bouquet toss and something blue. A wedding simply requires an officiant, license and witness. The celebration of said wedding should be an expression of the couple’s personalities, and sometimes breaking the rules leads to new traditions that are a better fit than those of past generations.
4
The Bride’s parents pay for wedding and reception; groom’s parents pay for rehearsal dinner. Wouldn’t it be nice if Mom and Dad still footed the bill? Not so with modern weddings. This myth goes out the window, as at least a third of wedding costs are now covered by the couple themselves. Families today are pooling their resources and then, together, determining how funds are spent for all related events.
2
Thank-you notes can be sent by email.
3
THE BRIDE CAN ONLY BE GIVEN AWAY BY HER FATHER.
While email is the preferred way of communication for many a message, it is generally frowned upon when thanking your wedding guests. Hand written thank-you notes are far from outdated, and though tedious to a generation of texters, it must be done. Appreciate this dying art, and take the time to communicate as your grandparents would. Years later, a friend will dig out your hand written note, carefully saved. Not your email.
This myth dates back to the days of old, when daughters were literal property of their fathers, and a wedding was merely a business deal for Dad to expand his fortunes through the sale of his daughter. While the tradition still sticks to this day, I doubt very much that modern brides would describe themselves as part of dad’s estate. Your aisle escort should be a person that played a significant and supportive role in your path to finding true love.
5
WEDDING LUCK (AND MARRIAGE) DEPENDS ON A SIXPENCE, SPIDERS AND SUPERSTITIONS. Here’s the thing about luck... it all depends on the belief that wearing a certain color, carrying a token or changing your behavior will shift future events to their preferred outcome. Luck is mostly used as a way to counter those things completely out of our control and has often been a way of explaining the unexplained. If only making it through the first year of marriage was as easy as saving the top tier of your cake. Make your own luck with careful planning, professional vendors and a positive attitude.
6
Vendors will always give a discount if you ask.
7
If you can’t foot the bar bill, offer a cash bar.
Wedding vendors are not Mexican bazaars where you haggle the best possible deal. While a vendor may run a promotion, expecting to get a discount because you’re a bride is like expecting your doctor to run a special because you’re a patient. This doesn’t make long-term business sense. Instead, plan to attend a local bridal show for show-only specials or giveaways, and be honest about your budget and vision with wedding vendors. Professionals will work with brides to find creative ways to stretch your buck and meet their bottom line.
Cash bars are T-A-C-K-Y... as well as anything else on your wedding day that require your guests to pony up cash. Remember these are the same dearly loved friends and family that bought a special outfit, traveled across the country, paid for a hotel room and bought you a gift for your wedding. During the wedding day, guests’ wallets should stay in back pockets and purses. Tactful Solution: If you are set on offering liquor at your wedding but fear the cost, consider a limited bar with only wine and beer (better yet keg beer, often costing half as much per serving as bottled).

8
Brides on a budget save big with DIY Projects.
9
Wedding Day is the Bride’s Day.
With the vastness of today’s World Wide Web, the likelihood of finding a bargain can make DIY more costly than one thinks. This is even more apparent when your inner crafter is not well-matched to make DIY magic (but Martha Stewart made it look so easy!). And remember, time is money, even if it is your time. Be realistic about how much time will need to be dedicated to DIY projects, particularly in the last few weeks leading up to wedding day (when the to-do list is never ending and you’d rather be with your family). If the budget is stretched thin, it might make more sense to skip it all together.
While you and your groom are certainly the guests of honor, a bride with her sights set on making wedding day entirely about her is likely to be labeled a bridezilla. Weddings are as much about the happy couple and their new life together as it is a celebration for all the related family members. Instead, find ways to celebrate your family or close friends and their traditions with your new love and the traditions in store for years to come. This ensures your guests feel part of a truly special event.
Your bridal party must have the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen. Today’s bride has thrown out all the rules when it comes to bridal parties. With your closest friends and family by your side on wedding day, trying to stay in the box of specific numbers or even genders just doesn’t work. Nowadays, your maid of honor is now your man of honor, pooches are playing ring bearer and dancing to the altar is what makes wedding ceremonies personal, memorable and unique.

Lindy Bors-Koefoed & John Sperry 11.03.12 Wedding day: The wedding party arrived at the Zoo an hour early to take pictures, and just as we entered the gate of the Zoo the skies opened up and torrential down pours took place. As our bus made it’s way to where the ceremony took place, we were greeted by all our wonderful vendors with drinks to calm our nerves, food for our bellies, and most importantly, a rain plan! We were blessed as the rain stopped 15 minutes before our ceremony, and we had clear skies the rest of the night :-) All our vendors were incredible and had everything under control! Wedding Details: We both love the Zoo and thought it would make a fun and unique place to have our wedding and embrace that natural theme we both loved. We loved the romantic setting of the sea lion exhibit’s rocky outcrop, surrounded by candlelight, and the fun, one-of-a-kind place that Northwest Passage gave to the cocktail hour. The Reception took place at the Teton Trek Lodge, which made for a fun, laid back place to enjoy great food, drinks and dance. We told our florist that we wanted a rustic look and feel to all the flowers, and he nailed it spot on. From the bouquets and boutonnieres, to the huge chandelier above the bar and centerpieces at each table, Kevin took our vision and made it more than I could ever have imagined! Simply Delicious did an incredible job on the food. We wanted the food to be a representation of both our backgrounds. The cocktail hour featured both food from New England (where the bride is from) and the south (where the groom was from), with dishes like New England Clam chowder shooters and fried green tomato sliders. The dinner included three courses each paired with wines from California wineries that were visited and chosen specifically by the bride and groom. Simply Delicious did a great job coming up with a unique menu that complemented each of the chosen wines. For guests party favors, the bride & groom made home-made orange marmalade from the orange trees in their backyard in Sacramento, California. The tags for the marmalade said “Spread the Love Brad & Lindy November 3, 2012.” We had welcome bags for each out of town guest waiting for them when they checked into their hotel. The bags included Elvis glasses to wear throughout the weekend, home-made “Shake, Rattle, and Rub” BBQ Rub, a welcome letter with the weekend schedule, a list of attractions and the bride and grooms favorite Memphis restaurants. Our colors were Burnt Orange, Dark Ivy Green, & Chocolate Orange

Sue Im & Charles Ngo 10.10.12 Love Story: Charlie and I met through mutual friends at a Grizzlies vs. Indiana Pacers game. We didn’t think we would make it to a second date. Charlie is my perfect match because he complements my personality and habits. He also supports my decisions when it comes to my career, family, or beliefs. Charlie popped the question during a date night on the town. After wining and dining me and playing secret agent, he asked me to marry him at the Madison Hotel, where he had gathered our family and friends for a surprise celebration.
Sue Im & Charles Ngo
Wedding Planning: We were engaged for about 9 months. I hired a planner towards the end because I knew that I would be running around like a chicken with my head cut off. The most important thing to me about the wedding was that, even though things were thrown off schedule, we didn’t get upset about skipping over a few scheduled events to get back on track. My vision was to have the ceremony be all about the intimacy and purity of the unification of two families, so we kept the colors of the ceremony very subdued. The reception was all about the celebration, so we amped up the colors with splashes of bright pinks and deep purples. My colors were ivory, eggplant, and silver. Wedding Day: I laughed as my father and the groomsmen performed to “Gangnam Style” on the dance floor and as the groomsmen performed a special dance performance to the musical mash-up of One Direction, Psy, Spice Girls, and Nikki Minaj. I cried tears of joy as I said my personal vows to the man of my future. The most memorable moment was when my husband piggy-backed me halfway through the reception hall during the Korean Tea Ceremony going 25 mph. The unexpected thing that happened was the weather. It began pouring, which caused traffic delays for my guests, which caused a delay in the wedding ceremony and the reception. But, in the end, it all worked out.

Tuxedo ( Suit Styles for Each Body Type
by Pink Lady Andrea Make sure your man looks just as stunning as you do on your wedding day! Read on for style tips for each body type.
Height Tall
Body Type
Thin
Average
Bulky
Average Short
You can wear just about any style, but be aware of the lengths of jacket sleeves and pant legs. The shoulder pads in your jacket will add bulk without looking too boxy.
Ask your tuxedo specialist about the “fitted look,” which will highlight your trim physique, while the shoulder pads in the jacket will add just enough bulk to your look.
Avoid styles that seem to “hang” on your frame, and look for jackets with two or three buttons that begin lower, rather than higher. Your tuxedo specialist will tailor it to your physique so that you look your best.
Again, you can wear any style! Always watch the length on your jacket sleeves and pant legs.
Any style in any color will work for this physique. The most popular currently is the two-button notch lapel tuxedo in black.
Two low-sitting buttons on a jacket and a vest will elongate your frame.
If you are largest around your midsection, move away from cummerbunds, which draw attention to this area. Consider the more popular option instead – a vest! Go for a onebutton jacket, and streamline your look by avoiding thick, layered materials. Choose a long tie rather than bow tie as well.
Again, if you are largest around the middle, avoid the cummerbund. A vest will draw the eye up, rather than to any bulk you may have in the midsection. A one-button jacket works for this body type. Long ties work best for this frame, rather than bow ties.
Do not go for thick fabrics that add to your size. Look for a jacket with one button that sits low. Opt out of the cummerbund and choose a vest instead. This makes you seem taller and slimmer. Opt for a long tie, rather than bow tie.
Reader Q&A:
Local grooms ask formalwear questions!
Q : “Some jackets have so many buttons. Do I have to button them all?” Evan - Knoxville, TN A : Buttoning only the top button of your jacket is considered appropriate. Q : “What button count works best?” Alex - Oak Ridge, TN A : Generally, jackets with one button work best with bulkier physiques, two buttons look good on average body types, and two or more buttons work for taller people.
Q : “Does it matter who does the alterations on my tuxedo or suit?” Carl - Farragut, TN A : Absolutely. Similar to having a wedding dress altered, not having a professional alter a tuxedo or suit can literally butcher the final product. Choose a reputable shop for your wedding day needs!
Q : “How do I know the difference between a tuxedo and a suit?” Julius - Knoxville, TN A : A tuxedo will have the presence of satin on the lapels, buttons, pockets, and in a stripe down the pant leg. A suit does not have satin components and normally has plastic buttons.

The Proposal: The proposal was everything a girl could hope for. We planned a trip to Spain with some of his family, stopping in at Amsterdam, Barcelona, and then Fuengirola, Spain. We spent all day at the beach getting massages and drinking sangrias. Matt and I decided to break away from the group and have a nice dinner by ourselves. The dinner was amazing, and the night was perfect. He then took me on a carriage ride that took us around the beach area and past historic castles. He stopped the carriage and asked the driver to take a picture of us on the beach. As the driver was taking the pictures, Matt knelt down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I, of course, said yes...after grabbing the ring and crying hysterically. We then met his family at a local pub for champagne and spent the rest of the trip on a complete high. Wedding Details: Our vision for the wedding was simple: great music, great food, and great drinks. We wanted this to be a day of not just celebrating our marriage but celebrating a life full of friends and family. Our colors were orange and charcoal, and the style was simple, modern, and reminiscent of a V.I.P. lounge area. We wanted our guests to be up mingling and dancing on the dance floor. Our wedding planners and rental company really got a sense of what we wanted and created the perfect reception with lounge chairs and sofas, cocktail tables, and an awesome dance floor. The caterer did an excellent job of recreating our engagement by serving a Spanishinspired cuisine and peach sangrias. It was definitely a party! Wedding Day: My favorite part of the wedding day was our ceremony. During the planning, we only asked the officiant to make the ceremony short and sweet so we could spend the night partying with our guests. Other than that, we had no idea what to expect. However, at the end of the day, everyone agreed the ceremony was the best part. It was like a fairy tale. There weren’t any decorations other than the bridal flowers and chairs; it was the sermon that made it special. The officiant talked about how life doesn’t always come with a storybook ending like in the fairy tales, you have to “love with abandon, be “quick to forgive,” and “turn to Him for strength.” He then ended by saying, “May God bless your life together, and may you live happily ever after.” What the officiant didn’t know that made this so perfect was that, instead of a ring bearer, we had my cousin hold a wooden sign. As we walked back down the aisle as a married couple, my cousin followed us with the sign that said, “And they lived happily ever after.”

Sarah Gehring & Mark Provence
Sarah Gehring & Mark Provence 08.04.12 Wedding Details: My theme began as vintage, yet elegant, not rustic. I knew since I was a little girl that I wanted to get my bridal gown at Low’s. I did not even consider going anywhere else. After watching many episodes of TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress” and looking through bridal magazines, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted in my bridal attire. I printed out pictures of various gowns I wanted to try on. The anticipated day to shop at Low’s Bridal was more exciting than I had imagined. Upon arriving at the elegant and historic Low’s Bridal, we were greeted by our very own sales associate, Mrs. Karen Deen. They allowed me to try on the gowns in the photographs I brought with me. Dorcas Prince, the owner, even graciously suggested different gowns. They were so very patient and helpful. Everyone at Low’s Bridal made me feel like a princess. They were truly excited for me. My dress was originally strapless, and Dorcas suggested putting removable straps on it so that I could have the same dress but a different look for the wedding and the reception. After finding the perfect dress (and no, it was not one from one of the pictures I brought with me), along with Dorcas’ help, I found the perfect veil. Everything is so surreal at first, but once you choose your veil, the dream that you are getting married becomes reality. You are overcome with joy and tears simultaneously. For the bridesmaid dresses, we traveled back to Low’s Bridal on a separate day with my bridesmaids and Maid of Honor. They were so welcoming once again and helped me find just what I was looking for. Our choice even pleased everyone in the group. Because I knew I wanted the dresses to be a royal blue, Low’s helped me to pick a dress I liked that came in the perfect shade of blue. I decided my colors would be cobalt blue and peach, so I also incorporated the colors in the invitations, flowers, tuxedos, and favors.

by Pink Lady Andrea
Body Type
Gown Suggestion
Straight-Figured
Try a mermaid or trumpet silhouette. Both help you seem curvier and make your bust and hips look more proportioned. If you really enjoy the idea of a ball gown, try that too! It will capitalize on your small waist and create a more pronounced hip.
Plus-Sized
Find a dress with an open neckline – ideally a strapless sweetheart. Do not opt for sleeves or a cover over your arms. Look for a dress with ruching that comes to a point, as this separates the bust and the hip perfectly.
Small Bust
Look for a gown with a sweetheart neckline and ruching at the top. This creates volume where you need it most.
Busty
Play down your bust by avoiding straight necklines. Rather, choose a sweetheart neckline or a scooped neckline. Opt for a modified A-line dress with beads and detailing further down the dress to avoid drawing more attention up top.
Tall
Seek a design with minimal frills that accents your long lines. An Empire dress can do just that. The dress will pull in right at or just below your natural waist.
Short
The fit and flair cut with a sweetheart neckline will be flattering on you. Keep in mind while shopping that a higher waist creates the illusion of a longer torso. Embellishments are great for this body type, but they should be small and clustered mainly at the top of the dress.
Pear Shape
A gown with thick straps or a one-shoulder look will help pull the eye away from your hips. A flowing gown with a natural waist will also help conceal this area.
Apple Shape
Seek out dresses with lots of ruching all over to create shape. A V-neck is slimming and draws the eye up, rather than across, too.
No matter what dress style you choose in the end, all that matters is how you feel in it. Keep an open mind to conflicting opinions, but do not let yourself lose focus in the midst of them. Your opinion matters most! Follow your professional’s suggestions as you try on different styles, and ultimately choose the dress you feel the most beautiful and confident in as you look in the mirror. Regardless of your body type, if you are happy and confident on your wedding day, you will be gorgeous!

Elinor McCutchen & Christopher Few
Elinor McCutchen & Christopher Few 10.27.12 Love story: The saying “Opposites attract” is definitely true when it comes to Chris and me. Part of what makes us such a great match is our different personalities and unique strengths. We are constantly learning from each other and growing together. We frequently thank our dear friend, Olivia, for introducing us in college. Chris proposed to me on his birthday. So focused on birthday festivities, I was completely surprised. He planned such a special evening in the private wine cellar at The Napa Cafe with dinner and wine for two.
Behind the Story
Wedding Details: Chris and I were engaged for thirteen months. My mother and I planned the wedding together during this time. We looked at hundreds of bridal magazines and talked to all of our vendors for ideas and suggestions. The most important thing to me about our wedding was at the end of the day, I would be married to my best friend. I wanted our wedding and reception to reflect our personalities, and that is exactly what we accomplished. Pictures are the one thing you keep from your wedding for years to come. Our photographer, Lindsey, was so wonderful to work with and does such beautiful work.. I wanted our wedding to be elegant with a vintage feel. Our wedding colors were turquoise, grey, and pink. One very special thing we did was use pieces of lace from my grandmother’s bridal gown to wrap around our bouquets. I found it was very important to explain my vision to all of our vendors. They were all so creative and helped me fully develop my ideas and make this day everything I could have ever imagined.

Pinot’s Palette is a “paint and sip” studio where groups of friends gather for date night, girls’ night, and corporate events, bring wine and snacks, and enjoy an interactive art experience. Everyone attending the event re-creates a featured painting of the night, like a version of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” with the help of local artists. Pinot’s Palette supplies all of the art materials, wine glasses and plates to enjoy the evening. Some call it entertainment art, others call it a painting party, but everyone agrees -- no experience is necessary to have a great time at the nightly two- or three-hour events.

Woes of the Web
a bride 's tell-all
Oh, the thrill of online shopping. People’s thriftiness or tight budgets allow them to get lured in by the ultra-slashed prices on popular websites. But when it comes to shopping for a wedding gown online, Christina Tompkins learned the risks the hard way when her wedding dress dreams turned into nightmares. The Right One: My fiancé and I were engaged in September 2011, and we set a date for September 2 of the following year. I thought this would give me plenty of time to make wedding plans. I soon began to search for a wedding dress. After looking through a few magazines, I fell in love with an Allure Couture dress that a bridal store close by actually carried. A little later, I was shopping online and I came across some other dresses that I’d seen in magazines at a fraction of the original cost. This made me curious to see if my dream dress was also available online at a discounted price.
The Wrong Dress
The Wrong One: Eventually, I found an online vendor who offered my dress—same exact picture from magazines, totally different price. At $235, my fiancé insisted that we take the chance and order it. So I submitted my order, but after a few weeks and no dress, I started to worry. I quickly assured myself and considered it a normal timeframe for a dress coming all the way from China. Soon after, I came home to find a very small, thin package on my doorstep. Inside, I found a dress nothing like the one I had fallen in love with weeks earlier. It was obvious that the dress was cheaply made. I immediately went to the bridal store where my dream dress was held and compared the two dresses. The elaborate, beaded bodice I admired on the original dress was replaced by one with gaudy, silver sequins. The original bottom was an intricate embroidery of hand-made flowers, while my online dress had white flowers actually safety-pinned onto the train! I was so shocked and heartbroken, but luckily I gave myself enough time for mishaps. I was going to try and make it a DIY project; in fact, I tried to sew on sequins myself! In the end, I contacted the company in China and asked for my money back which was eventually, and luckily, refunded to me. I recently found another dress by Maggie Sottero that I purchased—in the store this time!—without having to deal with hefty price tags or risky transactions! Her Advice: If it’s too good to be true, it probably is. Beware of bidding websites that present your dream dress with the same photos but have a distinctly different price. You get what you pay for—cheap price, cheap dress. Something as important as your wedding gown should be purchased in-store; you are able to have a concrete visual of what you are spending your money on. Go with the dress you give your heart to (even if your more frugal fiancé tries to convince you otherwise!). Do not spoil it by trying to find a better deal because, more than likely, you won’t find one worthy of your purchase. Be wary of dresses made in a foreign country like China. Being so far away from the manufacturer is never a good thing, and you probably won’t get the detail you are hoping for. Not all online wedding purchases are off-limits, though. I actually purchased my wedding shoes and several bridal party favors online with no hassle. For a bride whose dress is low on her wedding totem pole, she might not have to take as many precautions. However, all brides should do their homework before making such a costly purchase.
