Pinot’s Palette

Pinot’s Palette is a “paint and sip” studio where groups of friends gather for date night, girls’ night, and corporate events, bring wine and snacks, and enjoy an interactive art experience. Everyone attending the event re-creates a featured painting of the night, like a version of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” with the help of local artists. Pinot’s Palette supplies all of the art materials, wine glasses and plates to enjoy the evening. Some call it entertainment art, others call it a painting party, but everyone agrees -- no experience is necessary to have a great time at the nightly two- or three-hour events.

TIPS TO GET
THE MOST OUT OF
THE PINK BRIDAL SHOWS www.ThePinkBride.com
Create a wedding email address:
Bring a sheet of peel ‘n stick mailing labels:
This is a must do. Do not use your personal email address. You will receive lots of emails about your wedding and you want them all in one central place. Plus, after the wedding you simply never check your wedding email address again.
Many of the exhibitors will have in- booth registrations. On your label include your wedding date, your name and wedding email address. This will save you time!!
Show specials:
Many of the show exhibitors offer show specials the day of the show for brides ready to book. If you have done your research you may just snag a savings. Keep in mind vendors are not as busy during the fashions shows, so if you have your dress, use this time to talk one-on-one.
What to wear?
Comfortable shoes and layers of clothes in case it is too hot or too cold.
Come to the show ready to book or at least make an appointment: What do you still need for your wedding?
Go online to www.ThePinkBride.com and under the SHOWS tab click on your city. Then scroll down the category listings and review the exhibitors who will be showcasing at the show and link to their sites. Doing your homework prior to the show and having questions to ask exhibitors can help you be efficient and less stressful while at the show.
The Pink Bridal Show is like a wedding mall for the day. This allows you the chance to see lots of exhibitors without having to drive all over town. If you are not sure about signing a contract at the show, at least book an appointment. Why? You are not the only bride getting married and if you have decided on an exhibitor better secure your date before it’s taken by another bride. You do not want to be disappointed.
Can my Groom come?
YES – YES – YES. It is a great time to start making some decisions and clearly you want him to be part.
How long will I be at the show?
Assuming you still have needs, you can plan on 2-3 hours easily. There is so much to see and so many great ideas. Taking notes is a good idea so you can remember the important thoughts from the vendors you connected with at the bridal show.
Come and Enjoy yourself at The Pink Bridal Shows!! www.ThePinkBride.com Tickets are available online or at the door. If you have any specific questions call the Pink Bride office 865.531.3941 The Pink Bridal Shows are a lot of fun and a great opportunity to help you make good choices.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY Lindsey Lissau Photography
Amanda Piper & Ryan Michael 07.11.13 Ryan’s favorite quote has always been, “Energy and persistence conquer all things,” and it definitely proved true in our case. We met while I was his server at Old Venice Pizza, and he pestered me for months before I agreed to go on a date with him! Four years later, he proposed on the rooftop of the Peabody Hotel. His excitement was apparently so infectious that several members of the management were waiting in the dark with champagne for toasting and pictures! We were engaged for 15 months. Any time spent with either of our families is full of laughter. Luckily, our photographer and videographer have great senses of humor, too. Our video is full of moments that Garrett artfully muted because we’d be doing something that should have been serious, and would catch ourselves asking, “Should we be saying something meaningful right now?” and then cracking up. I also kept smiling really big when Lindsey was taking detail shots or was looking for a more serious and glamorous look, so we had a “Smile or Smolder” talk every time she took a picture. The men in our families are the criers, and our wedding was no exception. Both of our dads gave the sweetest, most heartfelt toasts, which brought us all to tears. I’ll always remember the way that the Reverend surprised us by involving our parents in our ceremony and asking them to surround us and pray over our new marriage. It was such a heartfelt and personal moment. Our little boy was fascinated by the elevators at the Madison and rode them for nearly three hours before he promptly fell asleep for the night. That was 30 minutes before our ceremony (oops!). We are so incredibly lucky to count every person involved in our wedding as a friend, from our musician that I’ve known since I was 15, to our hair and makeup stylist that was my first college roommate, to our photographer that I met in June. Every single one of them truly went above and beyond to make our wedding day spectacular, and I can’t thank them enough. I am so excited about our honeymoon! I’ve always dreamed of going to Greece, and my sweet husband is taking me to Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini for 12 days in September.

Scout Grabenstein & Victor Farah 05.11.13 Victor and I met on a rotation at the Med. Our schedules only overlapped for a week, but we connected pretty quickly. We joke about who asked whom out, but actually, I told him to ask me out, and then he did. So we both get credit for it. People say, “When it’s right, you know it,” and that was so true for us! We had only dated about 6 months when he asked my parents if he could marry me. We went on a beautiful trip to Beirut in June, and he proposed on a cable car traveling up a mountain. I told him that was the easiest question anyone ever asked me. Then we had the rest of the afternoon to enjoy a beautiful view of the Mediterranean from the top of the mountain, and the gorgeous church on top in the town of Harissa. We were engaged for almost a year, as we had to plan the wedding during my very busy first year of residency. Our wedding colors were blush and ivory. When it came to planning the wedding, Victor helped with everything! He always had helpful opinions, and he was positive about almost every problem we encountered with planning. Most importantly, he helped keep me from stressing too much over details! Victor is from Syria, and we wanted to incorporate as much Middle Eastern tradition as possible while keeping a familiar American wedding structure for my family. For example, our rehearsal dinner was held at a Persian restaurant, and we had Middle Eastern music. We even had hookahs on the patio after dinner! At the wedding, we had our readings in both Arabic and English. And at our reception, we had a traditional Middle Eastern entrance with “zeffah” music and a belly-dancer. We also had a local cook make baklava for us instead of a groom’s cake. The DJ alternated between American and Arabic music. We’re also both physicians, so we had prescriptions as our advice cards (“prescriptions for a good marriage”), and people filled them out with advice and signed them like prescriptions. That was my mom’s very cute idea! The professionals we worked with were wonderful. Tara Jones at the Tower Center was so incredibly helpful and approachable with answers to about 1,000 questions over the months of planning. She and her catering staff were also tremendously accommodating of our unique requests for food for the evening! Misty at Ballew Bridal helped me coordinate all my dresses, shoes and accessories, and she was so helpful with advice and positive energy! Studio LaRue was also very accommodating of our whole bridal party, and my stylist even came on-sight to the tower for a last minute “touch up” before the reception since there was a 4 hour gap between ceremony and reception.

TIPS TO MAKE YOUR
Hair Sparkle ON YOUR WEDDING DAY!
1 HIRE A PROFESSIONAL.
We know some of your are very good at styling hair but hiring a professional is the way to go; especially for your wedding day.
2 DO YOU COLOR YOUR HAIR?
Make sure you talk to your stylist at least 6 months prior to your wedding. This will allow you and your stylist to achieve the perfect color on your big day.
3 OUTDOOR WEDDING?
Be sure to choose a hair style that can take the heat. Also be sure to use lots of hair spray (Maybe have one of your bridesmaids keep some hair spray with them at all times to fix any hair that might be falling).
4 PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.
Be sure to set an appointment with your stylist a few weeks before your wedding. Use this time to share hair ideas with your stylist. This will help you see what you will look like on your wedding day and allows the hair stylist a little practice before the big day!
5 WANT TO BE SURE YOUR HAIR LOOKS AMAZING ON YOUR WEDDING DAY?
Be sure to start using a deep conditioner at least three months before your wedding. Ask your stylist for tips on which conditioner is best for your hair.
6 KEEP IT DIRTY.
Many times hair stylists like to work with dirty hair when styling. Dirty hair can often help the hair style last longer.
7 HAIR CHOICES.
Having trouble settling on one hair style? Try one for your wedding day and another for bridal shots or day after wedding shots.
8 VEIL OR NO VEIL?
This seems to be the big question facing the modern bride. This is your wedding day and only opportunity to wear a veil so why not wear one of the ceremony and switch to a beautiful hair piece or hair jewelry for the reception.
9 BE SURE TO BRING ALL YOUR HAIR ACCESSORIES TO YOUR TRIAL RUN.
This includes your veil and jewelry! You will want to see how this compliments your hair style.
10 CHOOSING THE RIGHT HAIRSTYLE FOR YOU!
You want to look naturally beautiful on your wedding day. If you don't wear you hair up then DO NOT wear it up on your wedding day! Start with your favorite everyday look and let your stylist take charge!

Runner-up
Maggie Roy & Jonathan Lewis
My husband and I both work at Methodist South Hospital in Memphis, TN. He’s a chaplain, and I’m an occupational therapist. We met in August of 2011 in a weekly interdisciplinary meeting and became friends. We began dating in January of 2012 and dated for about 8 months. On September 23, 2012, we planned a “Sunday Funday,” which included an early morning walk-up to Graceland (I’m a big Elvis fan!), breakfast at The Blue Plate Cafe, church, and a trip to the zoo. As we were walking around the Memorial Garden at Graceland, I noticed that Jonathan was kind of lingering around as I was getting ready to leave. He sat down on the steps, so I sat down beside him. He said, “I know you think it was your idea to come here this morning, but I actually thought it would be a good place to give you this.” He then pulled the box out of his pocket and sat it on his leg. He told me how much he loved me and the he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me, and then he asked me if I would marry him. I said yes (through my happy tears), and he opened the box and gave me my ring. We were engaged for seven months before the wedding. The main thing that I remember about the wedding day is that I have never felt so loved, not only by Jonathan, but by all of our family and friends as well. I don’t remember feeling nervous at all either. I just knew that it was right, and I had no reason to be nervous. My bridesmaids made me laugh all day, from the time we were up getting ready through pictures and waiting for the ceremony to start, until we danced the last dance at the reception. I think the photo booth probably got the most laughs. Everyone was working to make sure that Jonathan and I didn’t have to worry about anything on my wedding day, especially my mom! She did such a great job of shielding me from any stressors, and I didn’t truly realize how much until after everything was said and done. My most memorable moments were right before I walked down the aisle with my daddy, and right after the ceremony when Jonathan and I walked out. I remember beforehand thinking of how this was everything I wanted, and how my life was about to change forever. Then afterward, I couldn’t believe seven months from our engagement was over and that we were actually married! Our wedding colors were plum and silver for the wedding party attire, and the flowers were a bright spring mix. All of our wedding professionals were very helpful! Our coordinator and her assistant made the day flow smoothly. Our DJ played the music we asked him to play, and we received several compliments on him. The food was fantastic, including the cake (which looked as good as it tasted!). Our photographer was very patient, creative, and easy-going. We were so happy with the way the photos turned out! We had several family members and friends helping with decorations, and transporting gifts and leftover cake.

Meghan Fowler & Nicholas Gibson 06.08.13 As short as our engagement was, I was ready for it to be over. I was so relieved when the big day rolled around. The morning of the wedding, I went to brunch with my best friends at the Majestic and then had a massage at Gould’s downtown. My mom had apartments rented at Metro 67 for us to get ready. My wedding party, which consisted of my sister and Nick’s nephew (who was the ring bearer) was rather small, so I was incredibly surprised when my aunt, cousin and close friends joined me during the preparation process. Getting ready with my girlfriends and my family was probably my favorite part of the day aside from the whole “marrying my best friend” part.
Meghan Fowler & Nicholas Gibson
Since I was in hiding all day, and wouldn’t be able to see the reactions of the guests when they found out our surprise, my best friend Meghan brought two of my old friends from college to the apartment, and I got to surprise them. Their reactions were priceless! The night flew by, but some memorable moments were playing flip cup on my homemade beer pong table with my coworkers and friends from college. It was so fun to see attorneys of all ages mixed with my brother and cousins and hilarious friends from school learning the very “challenging” game of flip cup. We wanted people to remember the party and talk about how much fun they had. Playing that silly game was probably the best part of the reception because there was a laid-back vibe during the whole night. We had a really amazing party! My whole wedding was pretty unique, which was important to me. I am a pretty non-traditional girl, so I wanted that represented in our wedding. I wanted something unexpected, and that’s what I got! Representing our personalities and using the element of surprise was like me – very memorable and one-of-a-kind. The casual food and tailgate atmosphere was representative of Nick’s laid-back personality. We had a cigar roller at the wedding which was a big hit and definitely matched up with the laid-back atmosphere. The Metro 67 rooftop is an amazing place for a wedding. The view and ambiance are the reason we chose it as our location. The early summer evenings in Memphis are perfect, which is why I wanted to utilize the rooftop with the river backdrop. This made for amazing pictures! Our ceremony was right at sunset near the edge of the roof closest to the river so everyone could enjoy the view. The spacing of the rooftop made it so there was no confusion in our ongoing events. I knew I wanted an outdoor wedding, but knowing that there was an indoor backup plan because of the other locations within Metro 67 relieved any worries I had. My hair and makeup people were amazing. My photographer Mark Hamsley did a great job capturing the sunset for our special moment, as well as taking amazing candids throughout the day and night.

Taylor Lovelace & Samuel Waddell
Taylor Lovelace & Samuel Waddell 06.22.13 After seven years of dating, Sam proposed to me on family vacation in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Hilton Head is one of our favorite vacation spots that we traveled together to several summers. Sam got down on one knee at sunset on a pier overlooking a beautiful marsh. We got engaged on August 17, 2012, and were married almost ten months later. I have been dreaming about my wedding day for many years, so picking out my wedding day colors, flowers, and decor was easy. I went for a very traditional, classic, and elegant look. I had long, black chiffon bridesmaid dresses, and the groomsmen wore black tuxedos with black bow ties and cummerbunds. The ceremony was all white flowers in large urns with white pew markers filled with some of my favorite flowers – roses and hydrangeas. Our ceremony was very formal and intimate. It consisted of a wedding party of 22 of our closest friends standing by our side. Our reception was outdoors at a family friend’s beautiful home, surrounded by a small lake. We had guests hanging around the pool as well us under the chandelier-lit tent. Our flowers at the reception were white with small pops of pale pink flowers. Our wedding day flew by, but it was truly the greatest day of our lives. Our reception was all that we had ever dreamed of, and our band made for a wonderful party. It was definitely the best night of our lives! We honeymooned at the Hermitage Bay Resort in Antigua. The resort was located on an intimate and remote 16 acres, comprised of just 25 luxury cottages. There were beach side cottages and hill side cottages that provided the most breathtaking views of the resort and the Caribbean sea. It is tucked quietly away from the rest of the city in a beautiful, clear and bright blue Caribbean bay. It is absolutely perfect for relaxation and getting away from everything else. Their food was incredible, and a different menu was provided for you at every meal. The dining was made fresh from the resorts garden, and each meal was the best food we had ever tasted. It was our perfect and ideal honeymoon. We were very pampered!

Caitlyn Hagenbrok & John Kiedis 05.25.13 My wedding colors were mint green, yellow, and peach and aimed for a more rustic and vintage theme. There were a lot of moments that made me cry on my wedding day. One of those moments was when my father first saw me during a reveal. I never saw him break down in tears like he did when he saw me in my wedding dress. Zach also wrote me the sweetest letter to read the day of our wedding. I will always cherish that letter. Another memorable moment was when Zach and I walked down the aisle and went behind some bushes waiting for the photographer, and all we could do was laugh and cry together. There weren’t words, just lots of giggling and happy tears. While planning the wedding, Zach was such a big help because he always seemed to put things in perspective for me. When I would get stressed or overwhelmed with decisions, he would always be there to calm me down and remind me why we were getting married. He was my go-to person for when I couldn’t decide on something, and he would walk me through making a decision. I think the thing that helped the most was how neutral he was with (almost) every decision. I had so many people giving me opinions that it was so nice having him there to ease the tension and encourage me to figure out what it was that I wanted. Let me first say, I’m a dreamer at heart, which often got me in trouble when I was wedding planning because I had so many off-the-wall ideas.
Caitlyn Hagenbrok & John Kiedis
One of those ideas that I came across was an outdoor wood archway that had two old doors attached. I think it is safe to say that when it comes to math and building things, I’m what many would call “special.” Thankfully, my father is an engineer and was determined to make that wild dream come true, and he did, except it was even more spectacular than I ever could have imagined. He handmade a frame, and my sweet mom painted it for me. At the top of the arch, she stenciled, “Welcome to Our Love Story.” I can say that my parents single-handedly made my dreams come true, literally. Everyone was incredible to work with. Toni at Spring Creek was so great in handling all the logistics for me (something that I was incapable of) and taking care of the smaller details while being so encouraging through everything. She was great in taking charge and getting everything in order where it needed to be. Our honeymoon was incredible because Zach surprised me. I had no idea what to expect or what the resort was like, but it was nothing short of beautiful. When we both walked in the front lobby, our jaws dropped at how gorgeous the resort was. We stayed at an all-inclusive couple’s resort called Valentin Imperial Maya in Riviera Maya, Mexico.

Ashlee Omar & Robert Webb IV 04.27.13 We were married at Mom and her family’s land out in Eads. I always knew it was where I would get married. Not only is the property breathtaking, but I also have many childhood memories there. We both knew we wanted our wedding to be about our families and us. We tried to incorporate them as much as possible, even if it was small touches that only we knew about. I have a five-year-old son, Braxton, so we really wanted to make sure he was included as much as possible. He acted as the “little best man.” The ceremony was very emotional for me because it was more than just two people getting married. It was not only about marrying my best friend but also about us becoming a family of three. My son walked me down the aisle with my dad, and we also had him participate in our sand ceremony, and then he walked back down the aisle with Robert and me! I wanted a very Southern, chic wedding so

I chose pale pink for the bridesmaids’ dresses, and all flowers were pale pink and white. My something blue was a pair of blue cowboy boots my mom gave me! I incorporated pearls and lace to give it a Southern feel. I wore my aunt’s veil, which again added another touch of family. Our guests were given sunglasses as they arrived even though the sun wasn’t out, and everyone still enjoyed them. For the ceremony, we chose to have songs that were meaningful to us instead of traditional wedding music. Our families were seated to Amazing Grace, which is a favorite of our grandmothers, and I walked down the aisle to “When You Say Nothing at All.” During our sand ceremony, Matt (the ceremony musician) played and sang “Old Rugged Cross,” which was my grandfather’s favorite song. We also chose to have a cross that Robert built instead of an altar, in memory of the loved ones that couldn’t be there with us. I did most of the planning with the help of my mom and grandmother. I don’t mind DIY projects, so there were lots involved! I hand-painted wooden signs to hang on the chairs down the aisle, I made hanging mason jar lanterns wrapped with lace to mark the walkway to the ceremony and the reception, and I covered the frames used for printed signs with pearls!

Shelly Price & Kiran Hanumaiah
Shelly Price & Kiran Hanumaiah 03.23.13 We didn’t have a specific theme for our wedding, but I did want colors that were a little outside of the norm. I must have changed my mind a million times but finally went with citron and navy! We looked at several wedding venues around town. We both really wanted an outdoor ceremony, so we planned to have it in a beautiful garden. On our wedding morning, we woke up to gray skies, which remained until 2pm. I was determined to have this wedding outside! At this time, with tears in my eyes, I told the chair vendor to set the chairs up inside the foyer. My mother arranged for gorgeous, very last minute floral arrangements to be delivered while my bridesmaids scrambled to set out votive candles and line the aisle with rose petals. The groomsmen hanged paper lanterns and printed the ceremony programs. I am still not quite sure how everything got done just in time, but I know we had a great team! Despite the afternoon rain, little rays of sunshine popped out just in time for my father and I to catch the horse and carriage ride up to the foyer entrance, where the wedding was now being held. The most memorable moment of my entire wedding day was the look and the smile that my husband had as my father escorted me down the aisle. We had not seen each other all day, and as his face lit up with pure joy, I couldn’t care where we were getting married, inside or out! All of the vendors we used truly exceeded our expectations! Lyndsi Metz was such fun to work with from the start! Michael Francis, owner of Heart & Soul Catering, went above and beyond, literally always just a phone call away if we needed something. He truly went the extra mile on presentation for our wedding day. He accommodated a beautiful and delicious spread of American/Indian cuisine that our guests continue to rave about. Our florists did a wonderful job on the floral arrangements with our last minute changes!

From a Mom’s Point of View
Planning a Wedding
for your Daughter
My name is Martie Watson and I am the marketing director for Travel Leaders. Ordinarily I’m in the business of booking honeymoons and destination weddings. But my daughter was engaged and wanted to have her wedding in Memphis.
Now, the story begins! She was married June 9, 2013 and her name is Rachel Watson Mogy. From the beginning, she had a vision for her wedding day! I quickly discovered there are many pieces to the puzzle; it was much more than just hiring wedding professionals. First we set a budget. How do you arrive at that total? You think of a dollar figure that sounds reasonable and estimate how much each item will cost. Then you start meeting vendors. The main item is finding a venue and getting it booked. You may have a date in mind for the wedding, but until you actually put money down to secure the venue that date may change due to availability. Venue booked and off to the caterer. The first thing they ask is what type of food and how many guests do you expect? The bride tells the caterer the vision she’s picturing and we say probably 200-250 people and they tell us it’s going to be $$$ for each person. Ok, time to sit down and create a spreadsheet listing all the possible guests. We made a list of his family and friends and our family and friends and arrive at more of an exact number. Guess what; we were still at 200-250 guests! Then it’s off to meet with someone that does invitations, a photographer, a DJ, a videographer, a florist, a cake person, linen’s company, and a limo service! Oh yea… and the dress! There are so many pieces to the puzzle! Word to the wise, don’t wait around when hiring your wedding vendors because once their date is filled, you have to start all over again! We started planning my daughter’s wedding over a year ago. From a mother’s point of view – we needed that time to get all the details finalized! We went to the Pink Bridal Show here in Memphis (both times) and met a number of helpful vendors. We asked them to recommend other people they trust and we were able to secure great wedding professionals. As the time draws closer to the big day you may see a different side of your daughter as it becomes very stressful finalizing all the details; preparing programs, extras for the guests, the sign-in book, gifts for the bridesmaids and your flower girl, final fitting for the dress, and countless other things that have to be done at the last minute! At this point my daughter was looking forward to the honeymoon. I think if she didn’t have that to look forward to… we wouldn’t have made it!
The day of the wedding Even though you have great vendors, I highly suggest hiring a wedding coordinator for your wedding – at least for that day! They make sure the vision goes as planned and handle any last minute concerns or hiccups. My husband asked why we would need a wedding coordinator if we have great professionals. Now (after the wedding), he says, we wouldn’t have survived without help! My daughter’s wedding was beautiful and everything was perfect. If all of the vendors hadn’t worked together, it could have easily gone differently. After the wedding, she and her new husband had a fantastic honeymoon at Sandals Grande in St. Lucia! I would like to thank all the wonderful vendors that helped make my daughter’s wedding everything she dreamed of: Elegant Chair Solutions, Affordable Party Rentals, PBD Studios, Message in a Bottle, Dingo Entertainment, Guy’s Tuxedos, Hotshots Photobooth, Flowers Forever, and a very special friend, Alisa Cunningham. For me, I’m going back to helping couples plan their honeymoons and destination weddings! Travel Leaders Collierville and Memphis. 901-377-6600 and 901-853-6200.

Crystal Martin & Kenneth Walker, II 08.03.13 Kenneth and I met while my friends and I were on the way to the car after a long, miserable night on Beale Street. I saw this handsome guy flexing his biceps and triceps to this young woman and immediately thought, “Who does this guy think he is?” Well, I caught this guy’s attention (I mean… what can I say), and he came over, asking to walk me to my car. During that five-minute walk, I knew that I was interested. Very interested. We exchanged numbers, and I texted him almost immediately to let him know that I would like to see him again. He was and still is THAT guy. I am forever grateful for Beale Street and for my friends who dragged me to Beale Street that night. That night was the start of something amazing, and I will cherish it forever.

There really isn’t much space to get dressed in at the train station, so I had the hardest time figuring out where the bridesmaids and I would get dressed. One of my classmates Alam lived footsteps away from the train station and offered to allow my bridesmaids and I get dressed in her home. This turned out to be the best blessing I could have ever prayed for! It was so convenient because after we all got dressed, we all piled into a six-passenger van, and we drove around downtown Memphis to get some great photos. My dress fit me perfectly, so being squeezed into a minivan with eight bridesmaids was very challenging. I couldn’t breathe, and I was sweating. It all turned out just perfectly though because I had the best bridesmaids. They made me laugh, bought me water from some random guy on the side of the street (it was a closed bottle of water), and they tried their hardest to make my dress wrinkle-free by giving me as much room as possible to lay out on the backseat (no luck with that…ha!). I’m really into great photographs, so I was just glad that we were able to get some fantastic photos downtown. My most memorable moment from the wedding was walking down the aisle and seeing the love of my life. I was SO eager to see him, and when I finally saw him and the tears rolling down his face, I just broke down. I’m a tough girl, and I said that I wouldn’t cry, but you can’t say what you won’t do…especially when it is related to LOVE. My husband looked AWESOME up there in addition to our entire bridal party, so I was just amazed at how well the colors came together and how well my vision for the venue came to life! Our wedding colors were majolica blue, olive green, and gray, and I just couldn’t believe that those colors came together so well. Thanks to Dorothy Smith, I absolutely loved every minute of our engagement session, and our wedding shots blow my mind every time I see them. You rock, Dorothy!

Rachel Dawson& Joshua Greer
Rachel Dawson & Joshua Greer 03.16.13 Josh and I met during our senior year of college at The University of Tennessee in Knoxville. We met during homecoming in the Fall of 2006, when my sorority and his fraternity were paired up for a week to participate in all of the activities. Our relationship started out slow as we did not have our first date until January of 2007. We dated for six years, three of which were long-distance from Memphis to Nashville, before Josh popped the question.
Behind the Story
We are so blessed to have the best family and friends in the world, and we definitely felt their love and support for our relationship on our big day. We chose to write our own vows, which of course made me cry. Josh called me his “miracle” and brought the whole house down with that line. I remember my dad giving me a speech about how all of these people will never be in one place again and to take it all in. I’m so glad we were able to share that special moment before walking down the aisle. The dancing at the reception is what made me laugh the most. We had an awesome band from Birmingham that played a little bit of everything. Seeing my mother and her friends on the dance floor was definitely entertaining. We even did the Harlem Shake, which I had not planned for. Our wedding colors were navy blue with our flowers being different shades of green. Our wedding fell on St. Patty’s Day weekend, so we definitely wanted to have a pop of green in there to recognize the holiday. Brittany Parker, currently with The Cadre Building, was my day-of planner and saving grace. She truly went above and beyond to make things flow smoothly. When parking ran long before the reception, she took charge, opened the food lines and had the band start playing. She was one step ahead of me throughout the whole day and kept me calm in the process. She even managed to figure out how to turn the air conditioner unit on at the church to avoid a huge fiasco of not having air in a packed building with 75-degree weather. I lucked out with wonderful vendors and would highly recommend them to anyone! My food, pictures, flowers, and video turned out exactly how I imagined, and I was so happy with the work that everyone did!

Katherine Rhodes & Brantley Davidson 06.22.13 Our wedding could not have gone any smoother or been more fun! We wanted it to be a beautiful ceremony and party that honored the Lord in every way. Spending the day with my bridesmaids on the day of my wedding was so special. We woke up to do Zumba with an instructor I had hired. We all had matching sweat bands, and they made me a retro jacket that said bride on the back. It was so fun watching all my girls have so much fun! Even the ones who had no idea what they were doing had so much fun! The Pink Palace was a wonderful venue, and it allowed us to do everything we wanted to do. I recommend it to anyone.
Katherine Rhodes & Brantley Davidson
Right before we were to go downstairs, my mom and brother came up to give me a hug. My sister-in-law told me to soak in everything and to keep my eyes on Brantley. All my bridesmaids prayed for me, and I was struggling to hold myself together. As the girls went downstairs to line up, I stood with my dad and peeked out the window. He told me some very sweet words and prayed for me, too. We got lined up, and my heart was racing! I was SO excited! I heard the song I had chosen special for the bridal procession, and as the doors flew open, and I heard the music (played by my brother) I excitedly walked toward my groom! I never stopped smiling, but tears of joy were running down my cheeks! My handsome groom grinned from ear to ear and had tears rolling down his cheeks too. He was shaking his leg with eagerness. This was the most memorable moment for both of us! We had eclectic colors! The flowers were amazing – coral, blue, green, and white! The tablecloths were sea foam green. I think our wedding was very unique. My bridesmaids wore navy, short (almost poofy) dresses with lace-up tops. The groomsmen wore tan linen suits and no tie – it looked so good. For the groom’s cake, we had brownies with an ice cream bar. You chose your toppings. In the front lawn, we had croquet, corn hole, and a ginormous white beach ball to play with. We created a hashtag for our guests to use for any pictures they took throughout the night. My mom’s signs were all very unique! She made a sign to point to the photo booth on a black board with white lettering to look like a chalk board. We placed a large, wooden arrow with “ceremony and celebration” script written on it with floral designs at the entrance of the venue to direct guests. Our guest book was a big oak tree with a swing for people to put their thumb print on its branches and write their name. The menu sign had the same flowers from the flower arch she drew on the invitation, which looked like the arch we had at the ceremony! We had a sign on the bathroom doors that said “ little girls’ room” and “little boys’ room,” with pictures of the bride on the girls’ and groom on the boys’ as children dressed like a bride and a groom. I gave the bridal party glow bracelets and sunglasses to wear when they were individually introduced while walking down the stairs to the song “You Make My Dreams Come True” by Hall and Oats. We had a slow clap going, and when B and I got to the bottom of the staircase, our wedding party ran around us hooping and hollering. It was so great.

Choosing the right wedding wine: Q&A with Ryan Gill, of Southwind Wine & Spirits Southwind Wine & Spirits is the ideal place to buy the alcohol for your big day because not only do they have a knowledgeable staff that can help you choose how much to buy, but they also have the best everyday prices in town. Instead of putting things on sale from time to time, they simply don’t have the high margins that everyone else does from the start, which makes it like everything is on sale every week! Because they are confident they can help you determine exactly how much you need, they’ll even let you return whatever you don’t use for a full refund.
1. Figure the number of guests and length of reception into determining how much wine to get for your wedding. Determining how much wine to buy for your wedding can get a little tricky. While you don’t want to have to have your maid of honor run out half way through the reception because you’ve run out of white wine, you don’t want to be stuck with 100 extra bottles due to overestimating either. Ryan gives us a formula to help brides get started in knowing how much wine to get for the reception. First, he says, to find the number of drinks that will be consumed in total, you simply take the number of guests you’re planning on having at the reception and multiply that by the number of hours your reception will last. So, 100 guests attending a four-hour reception, means that you should have enough alcohol for 400 drinks. Next, Ryan explains that beer will generally account for about half those drinks. The other half will be mixed drinks and wine. A 750 mL bottle provides five glasses of wine, and a 1.5 L bottle will give ten. Ryan says that because many bartenders will charge a corkage fee, he usually suggests brides go with purchasing 1.5 L bottles. Since fewer bottles are being used, it’s definitely the more budget-friendly option! 2. Your wedding season will help in deciding on the best wedding wine. Believe it or not, the time of year and location where your wedding reception is taking place will make a difference in selecting the wine for your wedding. Generally, if your wedding reception is happening during a warmer time of year and/or is taking place outdoors, Ryan explains that you’ll want to have more bottles of white wine on hand for your guests. If you and your groom are planning on a winter wedding, go ahead and order more red wine. People usually won’t go for the heavier red wines when they’re standing around in the sweltering heat. Ryan also mentions that you’ll want to take a look at the ages of your guests when determining what types of wine to get as well. The sweeter wines have become increasingly popular with the younger crowd lately, so if you know you’ll have a large number of young folks attending your big day, keep that Moscato stocked! 3. Don’t try to offer guests a ton of choices for wedding wine. If you are fortunate enough to not have money as an obstacle for planning your wedding, you may be tempted to provide your guests with 50 different varieties of wine for the reception. While it’s great to give people choices, Ryan urges brides to stick to the minimum with their wine selection. He explains that providing a lot of different kinds of wine does get expensive, and also, you don’t want people spending five minutes at the bar trying to make up their minds for what kind of wine they should get. Ryan generally suggests that brides offer one red, one white, and one sweet wine for a wedding reception. That way, you can avoid blowing your budget and people will spend more time on the dance floor! Also, make sure the liquor store you’re buying your wine from is willing to help you determine the right amount of wine to purchase (as mentioned in Tip #1!) – some stores will try to convince you to get too many varieties and/or a surplus of bottles, while others, such as Southwind Wine & Spirits, work with each client to determine the right amount for his/her needs.

Margaret Schaffler & Kristopher Gavin
Margaret Schaffler & Kristopher Gavin 11.03.12 Kris proposed at the Crye-Leike office after he closed on our house. We finished signing all the papers, and the attorney handed me an envelope with the keys in it. The attorney said congrats and quickly ran out of the room. I was so pre-occupied thinking about the celebratory dinner at Flight that I didn’t think twice about opening the envelope. Kris insisted that I open it because he got Tennessee keys made for me. So, I just flung the envelope on the table, and out rolled my beautiful engagement ring! Before I knew it, he was down on one knee. Little did I know that my entire family and his were watching from the bank across the street. We walked to Flight, and I called my family, who played dumb and said they would see me after dinner... They were all waiting at Flight with my best friend, McRae. It was honestly the most thoughtful engagement. I wouldn’t change a thing!
Behind the Story
Kris was the best groom! He dealt with me and my craziness! It is stressful to plan a wedding from eight hours away, but he was right there every time I needed him. My wedding day was one I will never forget. It started off with me and my two best friends, Sam and McRae, waking me up. All my bridesmaids were so wonderful – they drank champagne and watched college football all day with me. I guess that it’s a sin in the South to get married during football season, but the weather in Destin is wonderful, and I got to cheer on the Vols with my twelve best friends. Seeing my dad was the sweetest moment of the day. I monogrammed a handkerchief that said, “I love you more” and our wedding date for him. Giving him that was something I will never forget. He unfortunately had an issue with his heart after the ceremony and had to leave, so I did my father/daughter dance with my big brother, T. That was definitely unexpected, but I am so grateful to have such a strong family and new husband. The night still went on to be amazing. Kenny Chesney’s “Back Where I Come From” will always hold a special place in my heart. Henderson Park Inn was absolutely amazing. The people there were so helpful and made everyone feel right at home. Ryan, the innkeeper, couldn’t have been more pleasant to work with!

Jennifer Hendrix & Robert Daniel iii 04.27.13 I had just accepted a new job and was going to be gone for a few weeks in training. I organized a dinner with friends to celebrate the new job when I got back. I didn’t think anything of it when Rob said, “Don’t you think you should invite your parents?” After everyone was done eating, we ordered champagne to make a toast. Rob got up and started saying a bunch of sweet things, but I still was not catching on. All of a sudden, I remember him starting to reach for his pocket, and everyone started cheering and clapping. Then he was on one knee, asking if he could take care of me for the rest of my life. I will never forget it. It was so special to share that moment with my family and friends there, especially because it was a surprise to everyone there too, except my parents, of course.
Jennifer Hendrix & Robert Daniel iii
We were engaged for 10 months before the wedding! I tried to soak in everything on my wedding day! Reading Rob’s letter that morning was very special. My Dad and my bridal party seeing me in my dress and veil for the first time was also very special. I had kept the dress a secret, except my parents and grandmother new what it looked like! I teared up seeing Rob in his tuxedo at the bottom of the stairs waiting for our first look. Talking to my Dad behind the doors at the church, right before they opened them to come down, was another special moment. Sitting with my bridal party waiting for it to be our turn and taking a moment to pray was also memorable. Other special moments include me trying to sneak a peak to watch the flower girls go down, walking down the aisle and seeing so many friends and family and our wedding party at the altar, and walking into the reception for the first time. From the flowers to the chandeliers, everything was beautiful. I loved our first dance, the dance with my Dad, and watching my parents on the dance floor having a blast. There’re just too many memories to detail! A few unexpected things included the 99% chance of rain forecast, especially for an outdoor reception! Somehow, that day, it never rained during our pictures or the reception. Our colors were champagne, blush, and a hint of mint! The best wedding planning advice I got and hope to share with future brides is to do what makes you and your husband happy! You cannot please everyone, and trying to do that will make you go crazy. There will be special touches that are important to your mom or dad, for example, and of course, those are important. But overall, really make this day about the two of you and how you can best share such an amazing day with your family and friends, and have no regrets!

Claire Arnett & Andrew Sumner 11.17.12 My wedding day was perfect, although I’m sure most brides feel that way. Around 10:00 the morning of, my bridesmaids and I headed to the the salon for our hair appointments. Early afternoon, we headed to the bridal suite, where my hair and make-up were done. We had cake-pops, snacks, and champagne before leaving for pictures at the church around 3:00. Idlewild is exquisite as is, but the lighting that day was exceptional. After taking pictures, we all gathered in the Parlor at the church and waited for 6 o’clock when we headed towards the ceremony. The nave in Idlewild is separated from the congregation by stained-glass windows, so unlike in most churches, you can see all the way to the altar.
Claire Arnett & Andrew Sumner
Watching Andy walk out and stand waiting as our mothers and dearest friends walked down the aisle is probably my most special memory from the day. The look on his face was priceless, and the feeling I had in that moment, waiting for my turn to walk down that aisle, is something I’ll never forget. Something unique I did for our wedding was that I walked myself down the aisle. I grew up with my mom, who taught me, among many other things, to be strong and independent. While there were certainly any number of men in my life who would have been wonderful candidates to walk me to the altar, taking that walk by myself in front of my closest friends and family felt like the right thing to do, the “me” thing to do, and I am so glad it was the decision I made. After the reception, Andy and I made a little detour before calling it a night. We stayed at the Peabody the night of our wedding, but I wanted the traditional wedding exit; that is, I didn’t want to “exit” our reception onto the elevator up to our room. So, after running through rose petals and out the door, Andy and I went to Beale Street and took photos while our guests dispersed. The pictures Kim captured are incredible – one of my most cherished memories. The bright lights and chaos of Beale behind us in our gown and tux look so awesome and made for such special photos. Amy, our wedding planner, was a godsend! My mom currently lives in London, and at the time we were planning, I was in Knoxville in law school. In other words, Amy planned a wedding in Memphis where no one was living! I went into the process with plenty of ideas but knew I needed a wedding planner for those “things I didn’t know that I didn’t know.” Amy filled in those details seamlessly before I even asked! She has innumerable contacts, great ideas, and unfaltering calm. I had no doubt that everything would go smoothly throughout the whole wedding weekend with her at the helm, and she did not disappoint!

Maureen Shorter & Marcus Esposito 06.01.13
Maureen Shorter & Marcus Esposito
In 2009, Marcus and I coincidently moved to Nashville to start our new jobs. It only took a few months before we started officially dating. On May 5, 2012, Marcus proposed in our favorite spot in Oxford. We had been to an Ole Miss baseball game, and while walking back, he stopped in the middle of the Grove on the Ole Miss campus, dropped down on one knee, and popped the question. Marcus had picked out the ring 10 months earlier but was waiting for a meaningful plan. And it was the perfect location as we are both HUGE rebel fans and in the city in which we first met! Thirteen months later, we finally said “I do!” I always hear stories from other brides, saying, “The wedding goes by so fast.” I wanted to make sure that we had plenty of time with all of our family and friends, not just the few hours at the reception. So, we had a wedding weekend. The rehearsal dinner was Thursday night in the Hughes Pavillion of the Dixon. On Friday, the boys played golf while the girls had a luncheon. That Friday night was a backyard cookout for out-of-towners and friends at my aunt and uncle’s gorgeous home in East Memphis. This extra day of events on Friday gave us more quality time with the family and friends who traveled to Memphis that we don’t get to see as often. It also gave us a chance to talk to people before the wedding reception so we could spend more time on the dance floor! And we couldn’t have a dance floor without glow-sticks, sunglasses and late-night Krystal burgers! One other unique part to our wedding reception was the entrance for our guests. We were able to serve a signature cocktail as guests entered and then took a tram-ride to the Teton Trek. We’ve had so many compliments on how fun it was for everyone! Marcus was mainly interested in helping with the venue and the food! When we were choosing caterers and menus, he was very decisive in what type of food we served and how it tasted. We wanted to have a theme with our food based on the cities we both come from, Memphis BBQ (my hometown) and New Orleans Cajun cuisine (where Marcus was born). He even had the idea of a macaron tower from Sucre in New Orleans, rather than a groom’s cake! When choosing the venue, the Teton Trek at the Memphis Zoo was the perfect for us. We knew we wanted an outdoor experience for the reception, but with our food and band inside since Memphis heat and weather can be brutal in June. Tim and his team at the Zoo made this planning process so easy and enjoyable! We knew how we wanted the reception to look, and they made it happen!

Nadian Chavez & Gregory Zak
Nadian Chavez & Gregory Zak 04.06.13 We met on Janurary 1, 2008, at work in New York. He proposed four years later over Valentine’s Day weekend in February of 2012 at a picturesque bed and breakfast in Marblehead, MA.
Behind the Story
The most memorable moment was during our first look session at the rooftop of the Madison Hotel. It was so intimate and special. I will never forget the moment he first saw when I walked in. His expressions was priceless. My maid of honor speeches had us both crying! My wedding colors were blush, champagne, and ivory. A unique thing we did was have our cocktail hour at the rooftop of the Madison Hotel, and we hired a guitarist to play Spanish-themed music while we drank cocktails, mingled, and enjoyed the outstanding view! All of my wedding professionals and vendors captured my day exactly. They made my vision come to life and went above my expectation. I couldn’t have been happier with the turn out! I would advise brides to attend pre-marital classes prior to their big day. Greg and I thought we knew so much about one another after spending almost five years together. However, attending these classes made us grow closer together at a spiritual level, which was a very intimate and profound experience. It aligned our goals and desires for our marriage, and we spoke about things that we never had addressed before. We also met other couples that were in the same stage in life as we were. One day after the wedding, we went to Europe for two weeks. We spent one week in Barcelona, Spain, and the second week we took a northern Italy tour. While in Italy, we made stops in Milan, Cinque Terre, Florence, Modena, and Venice. It was the most memorable, adventurous and romantic trip ever!

Amy Balthrop & George Gates 03.02.13 Our wedding day was a complete whirlwind! I woke up that morning with two of my bridesmaids. We had a leisurely morning of drinking coffee, and that’s where the leisure stopped. We went from my home to the country club to a brunch that my mother-in-law’s brothers and their families hosted for us. It was absolutely beautiful, and the bacon candy was spectacular. People still talk about it! Did I mention that it snowed most of the day? For days we had been watching the forecast, and every day the temperature forecast dipped further down. We decided that week that the forecast wasn’t getting any warmer, so we decided to move our wedding inside to the barn instead of their beautiful garden at Heartwood Hall. The bridesmaids, my mom and I were able to get ready upstairs in the beautiful house at Heartwood Hall. My bridesmaids’ dresses were a beautiful dark metallic gray. I was able to pair those with a spray of spring colors, sage, pink, peach, orange and ivory. With the wedding being right in between winter and spring, I thought this was a great way to capture both seasons.
Amy Balthrop & George Gates
I tried to add several special touches to the wedding. I was glad that I planned the wedding myself because I was able to inject so much of us into our special day, and I loved every bit of it. Aside from my bouquet and veil, I added several special touches. I had my bridesmaids’ wine glasses hand-painted to match their dresses, and they were BEAUTIFUL! We had a special guest book that allowed our guests to not only sign but also write a special note to us. We have looked at it several times and know we will look at it many more. The florist, added a lot of beautiful greenery and lights to the already beautiful location. When I walked in, I felt like I was in a fairy tale. The reception was a blast. I got to talk to most of the guests before I danced the night away with some very special people. Some of our most treasured high school friends made the trip to West Tennessee for the wedding, and we were able to break it down old-school! If I didn’t know better, I would have felt like we were at the prom! After the wedding, we made our way out to celebrate with several of our closest friends until late in the evening. Denise and all those at Heartwood Hall were absolutely wonderful to work with. I didn’t have to worry about anything at the venue. They were so easy to plan with, and the food was delicious. I still get loads of compliments on the food and venue. Our wedding photographer and dear friend Whitney Bower is nothing short of AMAZING! She was able to capture the beautiful day in so many special ways. I look at the photos on a regular basis, and those details take me back to that day over and over again. I felt like she captured our essence as a couple and the magic of the day perfectly, and I absolutely love her now even more than I already did!

Ashley Farrell & Eric Folk II 06.29.13 Eric and I met at St. George’s High School and began dating our sophomore year. We continued our relationship on into college at Ole Miss and dated for over six years before we became engaged. We were engaged in April of 2012. We went to visit Eric’s family in Moscow, TN. During the day, Eric’s mom told us to bring water out to some of the horse riders on the land. As we walked towards the location where the water should have been set, there was a beautiful setup. It was complete with an antique rocking chair, flowers, and a sign that said, “I always knew it was you.” The wedding was on June 29, 2013, and it was perfect! I began the day surrounded with family and friends but was then rushed to complete Eric’s wedding day gift (Ole Miss Season Tickets) and get ready for the 6:30 wedding. We stayed at the Ole Miss Inn, and each bridesmaid was gifted a cheetah print robe to wear as they prepared for the wedding. I was about to step into my dress when my friends handed me a scrapbook full of notes and pictures they had compiled from our past years together. It was super special!
Ashley Farrell & Eric Folk ii
The ceremony commenced (almost) without any flaws. I should have pinned my veil down a little better because it did come loose while walking down the aisle. The reception was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I had a hard time choosing a color, so I went with more of a theme: rustic and outdoors, with a hint of girly touches. I wanted a lot of texture in flowers with lots of greens, browns, creams, and dusty rose. The band was amazing, and we danced the whole night. I was most surprised when a family friend allowed us to use their beautiful car as a “getaway car.” The most memorable moment was seeing Eric for the first time. Getting to see each other and capture our reactions was so personal and exciting! It really took the stress off of the rest of the day. Then, we were able to be with our friends to celebrate and take pictures. We had a couple of unique items at our wedding. A picture tree was placed so that, upon arrival, our guests could snap a picture with Polaroid cameras and hang them on the tree. They could then write well-wishes on the back of their photos. Our s’mores bar was a hit because our guests could make their own s’more as they were leaving, complete with roasting and all! A basket of flip flops were placed by the dance floor for guests that didn’t want to be stuffed in heels while they danced. Lastly, Whimsy cookies and koozies were our gifts to our guests, and Double Decker Buses were the transportation for our guests to be transported from the church to the reception. All of the wedding professionals I hired were like hanging with my family. I could tell them exactly what I liked, and they completely understood. I could not have asked for a better team!

Behind the Story
Robert and I were engaged in late October 2012. I was in the middle of making dinner for us, and he stopped me right in the middle of sautéing broccoli, got down on one knee, and asked me to spend the rest of his life with him. I was too shocked to answer and just screamed. (I also managed to burn the fish, and we ordered delivery several hours later.) Our engagement was eight months long. Robert and I met in high school. Although we never dated in high school, we were always close friends. Several years after high school, we were sitting at dinner and asked each other why we never dated. The rest is history, as they say. On our wedding day, the best man, Daniel McKee, a friend of ours from high school, was also the bassist for Hope Clayburn. It was very special to us for him to play in the band and be a part of our special day. The wedding party went in golf carts to take pictures by the lake at Ridgeway. Two of the groomsmen drove the carts, and we had so much fun goofing off during this “down time.” My favorite moment of the day was walking back down the aisle after we had been married. Dorothy, our photographer, snapped an excellent picture of us smiling as we exited the room. Also, Vickie Parker at Ridgeway was very efficient. She took care of every detail she promised. I felt she had a wonderful understanding of my vision for the wedding and helped see it to fruition. We left the following morning on our honeymoon to head to Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It was very secluded and beautiful. We had the most relaxing time, mostly lounging on the beach enjoying Red Stripe beers. The resort provided a boat taxi for us to Dunn’s River Falls.

Leah Ligon & Kevin Endsley 02.23.13 We have been in the same grade and same class since 1st grade! In 6th and 7th grade, we were “boyfriend and girlfriend,” but I broke it off for ideas of finding something better! On September 6, 2006, we got back together and have been together ever since! High school sweet hearts! Kevin proposed on Christmas Eve 2011. He proposed on the dock over the pond in our back yard! When I got home from a long day of Christmas with family, he was at my house waiting on me! As soon as I got out of my car, he blindfolded me. He said he was taking me to look at my present! He said it was too big to wrap! When he took the blindfold off me, we were at the dock, and he had it lit with over 200 candles. It was picture perfect! The engagement was from Christmas Eve 2011 to February 23, 2013. Kevin helped a lot with the planning! He helped gather beans and wheat from his farm that we used as decorations! He helped move and decorate everything at the reception. We used his father’s antique truck as a photobooth back drop! It was a very special touch as Kevin’s father passed away in 2007. We used the bride’s father’s antique, five-window 1953 GMC pickup truck as the transportation from church to reception. I was happy all day! I wasn’t a crier that day. I was all smiles! I was very nervous during the ceremony being in front of all those people! The reception was so much fun with lots and lots of dancing! The band was awesome! We haven’t had that much fun in a long time! The photobooth was a highlight for sure and gave us very funny pictures! My wedding colors were black and cream to match our rustic theme! That fit us and our lifestyles! Low’s Bridal and Formal created an awesome, memorable experience for me and my family! They are an awesome group to work with! M Little Photography was incredible! I couldn’t have asked for anyone better! They did anything and everything I wanted and made me feel like family. We went to Grand Cayman Islands Beach Suits. It was wonderful! It was beautiful. We swam with the dolphins and the sting rays! We also went snorkeling. Besides that, we just soaked up the sun and relaxed.

Lindsay Grills & Bradford Black 06.01.13 The wedding day itself seemed like a blur. However, my sister-in-law Jessica, who got married just eight months before, told me to make sure I looked around and really enjoyed every minute. I took that advice to heart and tried to savor every detail. I remember looking around the room and realizing how blessed we were to have so many people celebrating with us. Brad is from California, and I am originally from Memphis, but I have several family and friends who no longer live here. Our closest family and friends were in attendance, and so many people came from out of town to share that day with us. It meant so much to have all of our family and friends in one place at one time. Our wedding day was absolutely perfect. There was a huge thunderstorm that came through the city the day of the wedding. However, that big thunderstorm gave way to the most beautiful sunset during our reception. That had to be one of my favorite moments, and we had the most beautiful photos because of it. The Italians say, “Sposa Bagnata, Sposa Fortunata,” which literally translated means, “Wet Bride, Lucky Bride.” We had originally planned to have the ceremony in the gardens. However, when I saw the forecast a couple of days before, I made the decision to use the back-up space we planned for ahead of time. After many phone calls to guests, my mind was at ease that we had made the right decision. The best advice I can give future brides is that if you absolutely have to have an outdoor wedding, make sure you plan for a reliable back-up space ahead of time. Camille with Cheers Event Planning was an angel throughout the planning process and especially at that moment. Hiring Cheers was honestly the best money we spent. I knew that we had no worries with them on our side. Our colors were classic navy blue and white, and the florist executed the decor just perfectly. I had navy tablecloths with many candles and arrangements of white and blue hydrangeas, white roses, and branches. I wanted the ceremony decor to be simple and beautiful, and Gina made a gorgeous birch cross with a spray of blue and white flowers in the center. She truly went above and beyond.
Lindsay Grills & Bradford Black
My bridesmaids wore simple navy dresses with blue hydrangea bouquets, and the groom and groomsmen wore their own navy suits with a striped tie of different hues of blue and white. My bouquet consisted of white peonies and blue delphinium. We went to Costa Rica on our honeymoon. Brad had been there several times before, and he always said that he wanted to take me there. We stayed at the Hilton Papagayo Resort and had a beautiful cabana that sat on top of a hill overlooking the ocean. We had a wonderful time, and we want to make that trip an annual event.

Marissa Warden & Andrew Hodges
Marissa Warden & Andrew Hodges 06.15.13 Andrew and I met two years ago when I moved to Memphis to be a teacher. I was hired at the Soulsville Charter School, where he also worked as an administrator. He asked me out on a date within the first two weeks of work, and we have been inseparable ever since. My favorite moment of the day was our first look. Andrew and I decided that, instead of me sneaking up behind him, he would be facing me as I walked toward him. That was probably the most emotional I was the whole day because it was just such a perfect and intimate moment between the two of us. Another special moment was sneaking a peak at the barn where our reception was held, before everyone else was in there. I had been dreaming about the flowers and decor forever, and to see it all come together was magical.
Behind the Story
Dancing the night away with my groom and all of our closest friends and family was definitely a blast. We really wanted to keep everything classic and elegant, but we did stray from tradition in a few ways. We opted not to have a cake and served ice cream instead. We also decided to create our own playlist and plug in our iPad instead of having a band or a DJ play at the reception. I really enjoyed working with all of our wedding professionals. On the creative end, our calligrapher Meagan was incredible and so flexible. We designed our invitation suite and then some all over email, and Meagan was able to take my poorly-explained ideas and turn them into a beautiful reality. Our florist, Greg, was really flexible and so fun to work with. I was literally making last minute floral decisions the day before the wedding, and he was able to turn all of those ideas into probably the most beautiful flowers I have ever seen. I loved working with Lindsey, our photographer, and her adorable husband. She was so calm and friendly that we felt like we could really be ourselves around her, which is so important when taking your wedding pictures. And finally, Denise and everyone else at Heartwood Hall were simply incredible. Our whole wedding ran so smoothly. We couldn’t have done without them and that perfect venue.
