WEDDING 101

YOU’RE ENGAGED! NOW, WHERE TO START? By: Chelsey Gatlin

After you’re done showing off that beautiful ring, it’s time to get to work on your wedding planning! While some brides are ecstatic and others are a bit overwhelmed already, everyone’s curious as to where to start. See our simple timeline to give you the rundown on the basics below! Psst. We have a more detailed checklist on page 95 for you!

1 SET THE BUDGET Sit down with your fiancé to determine how much you both are comfortable with spending and who else might be contributing.

2

3 SET THE DATE Once your venue is solid, an actual wedding date is now possible! It’s falling into place!

4

5 HIRE YOUR #DREAMTEAM Research different wedding professionals who fit your taste, style, and budget. If it’s a must-have person that you cannot live without, book ASAP.

SMILE FOR YOUR ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS One of the fun parts of wedding planning where you can dress up, hang out with your fiancé, and get wonderful photos taken. It’s also a great opportunity to get comfortable with your photographer before the big day. FINISH BOOKING YOUR WEDDING PROS This includes vendors like for your photo booth, makeup, hair, and transportation. GET THE LICENSE! Found in the state registrar’s office in the county where you will wed. Don’t forget the obligatory marriage license selfie!

DECIDE ON YOUR THEME Rustic, boho, glam, picking a theme will help narrow down your vendor search and keep your planning more streamlined for a cohesive look.

CHOOSE YOUR CREW Ask your group of besties, siblings, and future in-laws who will be so excited to stand next to you on your big day.

8

9

ATTEND A WEDDING SHOW You’ll be able to get tons of inspiration and get to meet potential wedding pros face-to-face without numerous meetings. Who knows, you might even book multiple vendors for your day!

10

11

SEND OUT INVITATIONS Get those in the mail! Your guests are eagerly anticipating theirs as they’ve been seeing your engagement photos all over social media.

12

13

BUY RINGS Start shopping for the wedding bands! While you may have had a ring on for a few months now, this gives your hubby a chance to choose his!

14

15

T | W · 18

BOOK YOUR VENUE Whether it’s a local barn venue that you have your eye on or a tropical beach 1,000 miles away, start to look for a venue and book early. Don’t forget to keep your budget and estimated guest count in mind. For local venues, check out the Venue section on pages ####.

6

7 SAY YES TO THE DRESS ...tuxedo, suit, jumpsuit, or whatever attire fits your wedding theme!

CHEERS! Pop the champagne! You’re spending the rest of your life with your honey! If that’s not a cause for a celebration, we don’t know what is!

SAY I DO! Now is the time to really celebrate and enjoy all your hard work. Welcome to the married life!

“We met when we were 10 years old. He played football and I cheered for our little league team. I had a crush on him and thought he was so cute so I asked him to be my boyfriend and he turned me down. We didn’t cross paths again until we were 20 years old and from then on it was like it was always meant to be.”

A trumpet dress features a more fit-and-flare style. This gown waits to flare around the midthigh for a mix of both princess and modern!

A-LINE

This is your standard go-to for wedding dresses. While it is similar to the ballgown with its fitted bodice and overall shape, the A-line gown’s skirt is more flowing with less fluff.

TEA LENGTH

Calling all vintage lovers! The tea length style was very popular in the 1950s and usually is a A-line or ballgown shape with a much shorter hemline ending right below the knee.

MERMAID

The mermaid and trumpet can sometimes be confused, however, the mermaid introduces a sexier vibe! This dress stays fitted until the knee to really show off your curves!

SHEATH

Also known as column style, this gown has a straight, narrow shape without much of a flair if any at all. Perfect for the modern or minimalistic bride!

JUMPSUIT

Introducing the newcomer of bridal styles, the jumpsuit. This style is quickly gaining in popularity as it can be totally chic and comfortable! Whether it’s completely fitted with a pencil pant bottom or more fun with a wide leg, this is a great option for you non-conventional brides!

To find your perfect style, let a bridal salon consultant help you! Find a local store near you on page 164!

STYLE

A COMPLETE GUIDE TO

MEN’S WEDDING ATTIRE By: Chelsey Gatlin Despite popular belief, women are not the only ones who stress and ponder about what to wear to an event, especially one this important. And sometimes, it’s even more confusing for the guys when it comes to what attire is technically appropriate. We’ve broken down each dress code below, so you will know exactly how to dress for every occasion!

Details Nashville

BLACK TIE A tuxedo is a must! This includes the black dinner jacket, matching pants, a white formal shirt, and a black bow tie or long black tie. You may also choose to either wear a black cummerbund or vest. Both are not required, but at least one is. A tuxedo is not just for the groom either at a black tie wedding. All men in attendance are expected to don the classic tux. Even though this isn’t the average look for weddings anymore, it is totally classic and oh so handsome! BLACK TIE OPTIONAL While a tuxedo is still appropriate and preferred, a formal dark suit will suffice here as well! Keep it in the colors of black or dark gray with clean, sharp lines. Basically, a suit that resembles a tux, but isn’t. When the majority of the guest count is wearing a tuxedo, you definitely don’t want to be the one standing out. We would also still keep a tie for a totally dapper look.

Circle Image by Danielle Evans Photography

COCKTAIL/SEMI-FORMAL With this style, you can be more relaxed! No tuxedos necessary. However, let’s not go overboard. It’s still a wedding at the end of the day! You can now veer into different colors like navy or a lighter gray for your chosen color of suit. Bow-ties and bold dress socks can be fun additions to an otherwise simple look and for a pop of personality too! To create a seamless look for the entire wedding party, a good rule of thumb is if the bridesmaids are in a more formal dress, it’s best to also have the groomsmen match the quality. You don’t want one more formal than the other especially looking back in your photos! CASUAL While this doesn’t mean show up in your old jeans, it is a more laid-back look! We’ve seen guys in suspenders (hello vintage inspired soirees!), khakis with a loose flowing white shirts for destination weddings, and even tan suits for spring affairs. With a casual dress code, you have more liberty to play towards your wedding theme too! For guests, we say take a cue from the location of the wedding to get the best idea of what is more appropriate. What necessarily is great for a barn wedding may not work for a tropical wedding.

WEDDING 101

A WEDDING PLANNING VOCAB LIST EVERY BRIDE NEEDS TO KNOW By: Chelsey Gatlin

Madeline Trent Photography

When it comes to wedding planning, there are so many things to consider like your budget, the perfect dress, who to invite, and more. One way to feel more confident and plan like a boss is to know exactly what you’re talking about! With a quick glance at this list, you’ll be a pro at planning and will impress your vendor dream team in no time!

DECOR

FLOWERS

VENDORS

CHARGER - Large, decorative plate that is not meant to be eaten off of. It is the base setting for the other course plates.

POMANDER - A type of bouquet that is a perfectly round ball of flowers that is usually carried by a ribbon. Ideal for flower girls to carry instead of a basket and petals!

VENUE COORDINATOR - Different than a wedding planner, a venue coordinator works for the venue solely and acts as a liaison between you and the location. Usually has the responsibilities of during site tours, giving vendors access on the day-of, helping coordinate in-house operations like catering, and processing invoices.

TEA LIGHT - A small, short candle wrapped in a metal case used mainly for decoration and for keeping food/ drink warm. VOTIVE - While similar to a tea light in decor purposes, these candles can be taller and have a longer burn time. These can be placed in vases or candle holders depending on the style and theme of the wedding. HEAD TABLE - The primary table at a wedding reception where the bride & groom sit with the wedding party. Dates of the bridesmaids and groomsmen can be seated here as well. SWEETHEART TABLE - The reception table specifically for the bride & groom only.

T | W · 52

TOSS BOUQUET - A smaller bouquet used for the bouquet toss instead of the bride’s actual bouquet. This will sometimes be complimentary from your florist too! BOUTONNIERE - The floral decoration worn on the lapel of a tuxedo or suit jacket. This is typically a single flower that matches the bride’s bouquet or theme of the wedding. Usually worn by the groom, groomsmen, fathers, grandfathers, ring bearers, and sometimes ushers. FILLER - Flowers & greenery used to create a more lush, full bouquet or to add texture. Think baby’s breath, delphiniums, tracheliums, dusty miller, and eucalyptus leaves.

VENDOR MEAL - This is a meal that is specifically for your day-of vendors like your photographer, wedding planner, & DJ/band. It is usually a stripped-down version of your menu that consists of an entree and a couple of sides. Some vendors include this as a requirement in their contract, so be sure to double check! PLUS PLUS - A catering term meaning that the price for each person does not include service charges or gratuity/tax. Usually seen as $45 ++. $45 would then be your base price with service charges and taxes added to it.

INVITATIONS

CAKE & FOOD

EMBOSSING - Used to define designs and headings in your invitations. The wording or design looks raised adding more dimension to the look.

GANACHE - Pronounced like “gahnahsh,” ganache is a pastry element made up of melted chocolate and cream that is used for glazes, cake icings, sauces, or fillings.

LETTERPRESS - Normally used for a traditional look, the letters are indented on the front of the invitation and slightly raised on the back. FOIL STAMPING - Using thin foil leaves to create a metallic design for a bit of sparkle. Can be more expensive and have a longer turnaround time though than more traditional methods. STATIONERY SUITE - This includes your invitation, reception card (if having a separate reception site than your ceremony), RSVP card, directions, accommodations card, inner and outer envelopes, and the band or wrapper that holds all the pieces together.

ATTIRE TULLE - A popular type of fabric used in wedding dresses and veils. It is a very fine, lightweight netting that can be in multiple colors and materials. BLACK TIE OPTIONAL - A dress code for guests consisting of guys wearing either a tuxedo or a formal dark suit and women wearing a full-length gown or a nicer cocktail dress. Dresses should not be too short or revealing. BUSTLE - The process of converting the wedding dress to look as if it had no train. Involving buttons, hooks, or ribbons, the train is either lifted or tucked for easier movement during the reception.

ORDER OF EVENTS PRELUDE - The music playing while guests are entering the ceremony site. This starts 20-30 min before the wedding. PROCESSIONAL - The order in which the wedding party enters the wedding. This includes the officiant, groom & groomsmen, family members, bridesmaids, ring bearers, flower girls, and finishes with the bride and her chosen escort. RECESSIONAL - The exit by the wedding party down the aisle at the end of the ceremony. The order is reversed from the processional with the officiant remaining at the altar.

PIPING - A type of cake decorating that involves using a pastry bag & tips for intricate designs. BUTTERCREAM - A form of cake icing and/or filling consisting of a soft mixture of butter and powdered sugar. There are different forms like Italian buttercream that also incorporates egg whites. FONDANT - Another sort of cake icing that is usually thicker. It is rolled and placed on the cake for a smoother look. HAND PASSED APPETIZERS - Can also be referred to as tray service or tray passing, your catering staff will present bite-size appetizers or hors d’oeuvre on a tray to your guests during cocktail hour. CANAPÉ - Perfect for your cocktail hour menu, a canapé (pronounced “can-a-pay”) is an hors d’oeuvre that is small and easy to eat in one bite and great for being a hand passed appetizer. Usually a cracker, bread, or toast with savory toppings.

GUESTS ESCORT CARD - A card used to tell guests at which table they are seated at. Usually displayed during cocktail hour. PLACE CARD - Another card used to tell a wedding guest at which specific seat they are at. This will be placed at the table setting.

LIGHTING GOBO - A small disc or template inserted in a GOBO projector light to show a design, monogram, or names in lights on the dance floor, wall, or exterior. UPLIGHTING - A light used to highlight the architecture of your venue space or add color to the reception site. Sometimes will be sold by DJs, rental companies, or lighting companies.

WEDDING 101

10 Tips for Creating Your

WEDDING WEBSITE By Chelsey Gatlin

1. CARRY ON THE THEME

This is a wonderful opportunity to expand the theme of your wedding and give your guests a little sneak peak into the celebrations!

2. DON’T INCLUDE EVENTS NOT EVERYONE IS PRIVY TO Such as your bachelorette party, rehearsal dinner, etc. Your guests are excited to be there for you, so there isn’t a need to include events they may not be invited to.

6. DON’T RELY ON GUESTS TO RSVP ONLINE

Some guests might RSVP online, however, a majority probably won’t, especially if they are an older crowd. It’s better to be safe than sorry and stick with the good ol’ formal paper RSVPs.

7. GIVE THEM THE DETAILS

Think of this as the who, what, and where section. Be sure to include a basic timeline, the dress code, and any pertinent info from the venue like parking.

3. PERSONALIZE IT

This is your chance to brag about your proposal or how we met story! Even if everyone’s heard it already, they are excited about the wedding and on your website to learn more about celebrating you! So, give them what they want — that being a sweet love story!

4. KEEP IT SIMPLE

However, don’t have them reading a novel either. Guests do want to read all about your relationship, your wedding party, and the info, but too much will bog them down. Keep it short and sweet as much as you can. You can run a little longer in your “About Us” section, but when introducing your wedding party stick to a couple of quick facts.

5. INCLUDE DIRECTIONS & TRAVEL

For any destination wedding or when your guest list has a lot of out of towners, you need to include some details on where to go and how to get there! Nothing is worse than being in a new city for an event, and not having a clue about where you’re going! Relieve some of the stress for your out of town guests by being a local travel guide via your wedding website. Include directions, whether that is step by step or a Google map link set straight to your venue, and any necessary travel info such as road closures or busy traffic times. Don’t forget to add some cool things they can check out and do while in town, too!

T | W · 68

8. INCLUDE SOCIAL MEDIA

This is a great chance to include your wedding hashtag! Or let your guests know that your ceremony is unplugged.

9. CREATE A WEDDING EMAIL FOR ALL QUESTIONS TO BE DIRECTED TO This is a must when wedding planning in general! However, creating a wedding email that is included on your website is great for when you don’t want your personal inbox full from wedding questions!

10. SHOW OFF THOSE BEAUTIFUL ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS!

You both look great, so show them off! This is the perfect place to relieve your social media feed from an influx of engagement photos, and be able to share them with your closest loved ones!

BEAUTY

7 DRUGSTORE BEAUTY HACKS LEADING UP TO THE BIG DAY By: Chelsey Gatlin On such a big day of your life, of course you want to look your best! While the beauty and health industry has countless ways to prep for your special day, you don’t always have to spend the big bucks to achieve that bridal glow. Try these 7 drugstore beauty products leading up to your celebrations for a beautiful look with a reasonable price! PS. Keep in mind that any new treatment or product should NOT be tried within 6 weeks of your wedding day!

TEETH WHITENING STRIPS, TRAYS, & GELS Of course, our smiles are a big concern when it comes to weddings. It is easily one of the most photographed days of your life, so a dazzling smile is a must! It is so easy to achieve a whiter smile with the many products on the market. From Crest White Strips and the numerous whitening toothpastes to a deluxe whitening light, you won’t have to break the bank for a gorgeous smile! FACE MASKS I have to admit, face masks are my thing! They are my number one go-to for a little R&R, and I love that I can do them sitting on my couch while binging Real Housewives. Plus, there’s a face mask for every skin concern! I personally keep going back to L’Oreal’s clay masks and the Yes To brand depending on what I need.

T | W · 76

SKINCARE Skincare is a very popular topic these days, especially when it comes to bridal beauty! We all want clear, glowing skin and there are so many routes to get there! From holy grail moisturizers and new retinol serums to quick acne treatments, your local drugstore has it. It’s also the perfect opportunity to try a few different methods to see what works for you without breaking the bank. Check out tried-andtrue products like CeraVe Facial Cleanser and Aveeno’s Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer with SPF 15 for a smoother, healthier complexion! LIP SCRUBS Flaky, dry lips with patchy looking lipstick? A definite no-no for your nuptials! Try a low-cost lip scrub to get your lips in tip top shape! Or better yet, grab the ingredients and make your own!

CUTICLE OILS Along with photos of your skin and smile, your hands are going to be photographed and looked at a lot. No one wants jagged, peeling cuticles around that fab manicure and sparkling ring! Grab some quick cuticle oil from your local drugstore to keep your cuticles hydrated and in great shape before your big day. Sally Hansen, Essie, and Burt’s Bees all have great options! JADE ROLLERS This handheld massage tool is really making a name for itself within the beauty industry! If you’ve not heard of this yet, the jade roller is known for plumping the skin and improving circulation. It also reduces redness, inflammation, dark circles, and wrinkles! Paired with your favorite oil or cream, this is a perfect way to relax before bed and your big day!

HAIR MASKS We can’t forget about giving your strands some love too! Hair masks are so easy to do! Whether it’s a quick 5 minute in-shower mask or a longer split end treatment, this is wonderful keeping your ends and dryness in check! Say hello to healthy, shiny hair! My favorite is definitely Kristin Ess’s daily scalp mask from Target!

What Not to DIY for Your Wedding By Katherine Whitehead

If you’re a crafty bride, you love two things: hot glue guns and mod podge. Nothing is better than a fresh coat of paint and a refurbished chair! With your wedding approaching, there is no better time to show off your trade than the present. However, while it may seem like a great idea to put those saved pins to use on your big day, sometimes it’s better to leave it to the professionals.

rawpixel on Unsplash

PLANNING Although you may be organized and have dozens of planners and people dedicated to helping you plan your wedding, professional wedding coordinators can make the difference between a wedding that fits your style and one that feels less than what you envisioned. Whether you choose to go with a full-service, month of, or day of planner, they are there to make sure you and your fiance have the wedding of your dreams, giving you time to breathe as you prepare for your big day.

DRESS No matter how great you are with a needle and thread, your wedding is not the time to sew your own dress. Getting married is one of the biggest days of your life, and you’re going to want to look back on it knowing that you looked and felt your best. Choosing the gown of your dreams in store will allow you to make arrangements for any necessary fittings and alterations that couldn’t be done otherwise. Additionally, purchasing your gown from a reputable salon instead of from an online store guarantees you know exactly what you’re getting.

FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS It may seem like a great idea to cut your own wildflowers for your floral arrangement, however, this can lead to some sad-looking flora. Most flowers should be cut and handled shortly before the event. You don’t want to spend the time before your ceremony putting yourself and others to work trimming stems and assembling bouquets. Hiring a seasoned florist is the best way to ensure beautiful blooms!

It’s pretty likely that nearly everyone you know owns a camera, and as much as people think they know a thing or two about photography, there’s a good chance the photos could turn out less than stellar. Before you decide to let your friend take your wedding day photos, consider leaving it to the pros. A photographer is there to do one thing - photograph. Unlike your bestie with the fancy camera, they won’t be spending time socializing. Their job is to focus on you and the happy moments of your day. They know when and where the lighting is the best and will think of photos that your family may not.

CAKE When it comes to preparing the perfect cake, it’s often better to let someone else do the baking. Even if you think you can save some bucks with a nice sheet cake, it may be overwhelming when it comes to figuring out how much to serve. Cake pros have experience planning wedding cakes, and a good sense of what it takes to give you the dessert you want, while making sure everyone at the reception leaves with a wonderful taste.

FOOD If you’re expecting a large amount of guests, preparing your own food for your reception is probably not a great idea. It takes a lot of work to make a large amount of food, which only adds to the list of things to do before the wedding. Consider hiring a caterer to help you in planning, cooking and serving your food and drinks. Caterers know what it takes to serve a crowd and can help you brainstorm how to make your menu stand out, while still keeping in mind your own personal touches. When you let them take over, they can figure out the logistics of transportation, storage and set up too.

Doing your own hair and makeup may seem reasonable, but it may be a better idea to see a hair stylist and makeup artist for your wedding day do’. Being in charge of your own look may lead to added stress and uncertainty as you get ready the day of your wedding. Try to hire a professional and set up a trial appointment so you know exactly what you want, This will help check another item off your list, allowing you to be on your way to the altar in no time!

ABC’S OF WEDDING VENUES By Kendall Calkins

With so many options to choose from, finding the perfect wedding venue can be tough. Never fear! We are here to give you the ABC’s of wedding venues to help you find your perfect match.

A: ALL-INCLUSIVES All-Inclusive wedding venues are just that: All. inclusive. Often times they can include things like your catering, flowers, decor, linens, and more - all in one price! Exactly what is included can vary by venue so make sure you ask what is included and if there are any upgrades that will cost extra. B: BE PREPARED Do your homework! It is important to research venue choices before scheduling a tour. Try to have your basic wedding information narrowed down: how many guests you will have, if you want different venues for your reception and ceremony, how much you would like to spend, etc.

T | W · 110

Waldorf Photograhic Art

C: CONSIDER INSURANCE Wedding insurance may be the last thing on your mind when searching for your dream venue, but it is something to consider. Check with your potential venue to see if you will need to take out any extra insurance policies. Wedding insurance can be found at most insurance agencies and can cover everything, not just your venue. It is always better to be prepared. D: DESTINATION DREAMS Looking to turn your wedding into a fabulous long weekend filled with family and friends? A destination wedding may be just what you need. If celebrating your love in an exotic place is something you envision for your special day, consider hiring destination planner to help you find your dream venue.

E: ECLECTIC VENUES As weddings are becoming ever more unique, so are the venues they are hosted at! From fairy gardens to urban-chic city rooftops, there is a venue to fit every couple’s style. If you aren’t in love with traditional venues, going with something more eclectic may just be the perfect fit for you. The wow factor of the built-in decor at an art gallery, museum, and zoo just can’t be beat! F: FOODIE FEELINGS If you and your fiance are self-declared foodies with plans of bringing in catering from your favorite gastro pub or several of your favorite food trucks to give your guests a unique dining experience, make sure to ask your venue if this can be done before you book. If you fall in love with a venue that requires you use their inhouse catering, never fear. Some chef’s will prepare recipes you provide so your wedding can still have the decadent dining experience of your dreams. G: GETTING READY When searching for your dream wedding venue, it is important to check out the bridal and groom suite. It may be easy to think of this space as insignificant, but you will be spending the bulk of your wedding day getting ready and hanging out in your suites with your wedding party. Make sure the suite is a place you can see yourself comfortably getting ready for your big day! H: HOLD OFF ON CHOOSING A THEME While it may be tempting to pick out a theme for your big day right away, try to hold off until you have your venue locked down. Fitting a theme to your venue will be much easier than fitting a venue to your theme. It is also important to remember that with the right planner any space can be transformed. Who says your bohemian wedding dreams can’t come to life in eclectic ballroom? I: INSIDER INSIGHTS There are so many venues to choose from! If you don’t know where to start, ask people you know if they have any recommendations. You can also search popular wedding professional sites for a lengthy list of reviews. Getting a wide range of reviews will help you get a better idea of what your wedding day will really be like. J: JUST IN CASE IT RAINS Even if you have crossed your fingers for nothing but clear skies and sunshine, mother nature may not corporate. It is important to talk with your venue coordinator about a contingency plan in the unlikely event that it rains. Something as simple as a tent rental on standby or another indoor location on site can save you lots of stress later on.

Derek Halkett Photography

K: KEEP YOUR GUEST COUNT IN MIND Make sure you have a realistic estimate of your guest count before starting your venue search. Evey venue has occupant limitations and you don’t want to fall in love with something that can’t fit all of your guests.

L: LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! Location can play a key role in finding your dream wedding venue. Consider whether you will be providing your guests with transportation. If you are having your ceremony and reception at separate locations, how far will your guests have to travel? Will you be having a large number of out of town guests? If so, you will want to make sure your venue is in close proximity to hotel accommodations. Transportation can become a large wedding budget item if you are shuttling your guests a significant distance.

Ceremony Location · WindRiver Photographer · Zamana Lifestyles Photography

M: MANAGE EXPECTATIONS It is important to know exactly what you can and cannot afford before you schedule any venue tours. The last thing you want to do is fall in love with a venue you can’t have. Being flexible is key! Try researching what the going rate in your area. This way, you will know exactly what to expect from your potential venues. N: NEGOTIATION BEST PRACTICES It is natural to want to feel like you are getting a good deal when booking your wedding venue. There is always room for negotiation, however, be careful not to insult the venue representative. Remember that venues put a lot of time and money into bringing your perfect wedding day to life. If you are looking for some wiggle room at an allinclusive venue, try suggesting substitutions rather than asking for price cuts to the bottom line. O: OUTDOOR OPPORTUNITIES If natures natural beauty inspires you, an outdoor venue may be perfect for your wedding. From beaches to gardens, the options are endless when it comes to getting married at an outdoor venue. Dress up an already lovely garden for a formal wedding or let nature take center stage as your decor for a more casual ceremony on the beach. Either way, your day is sure to be breathtaking at an outdoor venue. P: PICKING YOUR DATE The more flexible you are willing to be, the more likely your dream wedding venue will be available. If you are attached to a specific date, be aware that you may have to compromise on the location of your wedding.

Tara Kneiser Photography Q: QUOTES AND CONTRACTS Read the fine print before you sign on the dotted line! Finding your dream wedding venue is an exciting time, but it is important to know and understand all of the nitty gritty details before you sign your contract. Make yourself aware of the “scope of services” and any additional charges that could be added to your original quote so there are no surprises. R: RESTRICTIONS It is very important to fully understand any restrictions your venue may have. Some venues have restrictions on the amount of DIY decor you can bring, while others may not serve alcohol. Having a clear understanding of what you can and cannot do at your venue will help ensure smooth sailing through the rest of your wedding planning process. S: STAY TRUE TO YOUR STYLE Your wedding should and will be uniquely you. Remember to look at venues that are both aesthetically pleasing and and make you feel comfortable. The venue you choose, like all aspects of your wedding, should be a reflection of your style. If you consider yourselves to be modern, try looking at some art galleries and museums. On the other hand, if you consider yourselves to be classic and traditional, a ballroom or country club may just be the perfect fit. T: THINK ABOUT FLOW This may seem like a no brainer, but remember to envision your space in sections. There should be spaces for your guests to dance, eat, and mingle. If you cannot envision all of these areas in your space, your reception may feel cramped. Columns and nonremovable decor are also things to take note of. Could any of these hinder your guests’ view, or do they enhance the space by providing a clear division of the space?

U: UNDERSTANDING ONSITE COORDINATORS Many venues provide onsite coordinators. It is important to understand that this is not a full-fledged wedding planner. Venue coordinators are available to help you coordinate different aspects of your wedding that will happen on the property. If you are looking for someone to help you with picking out your other wedding professionals and bring your wedding vision to life, you may need to hire a full service wedding planner.

V: VIEWS It is all about the view! When searching for your wedding venue, think about what you want your guests to see. Are you searching for the perfect grand staircase for your elegant reception entrance? A big picture window to provide the backdrop for your first dance? Or maybe you want to be outside with an unobstructed view of the sunset. Create a list of which views are important to you and your fiance while conducting your wedding venue research. W: WALKTHROUGHS ARE A MUST We cannot stress enough the importance of walkthroughs. It is never a good idea to book a venue site unseen. While we love ogling over picturesque images of different venues, it is tough to get a full conception of a space without physically walking through it. If you are planning on getting married in an area you cannot visit, have your wedding planner facetime you from the potential venue as she does a walk through. A virtual tour is better than site unseen. X: XTRAS Donut walls, giant lawn games, alpaca special appearances, and food trucks are all unique extras couples can choose from to personalize their wedding day experience. If you have your heart set on any unconventional extras, make sure your venue allows for them. Y: YES, YOUR VENUE IS IMPORTANT Your venue is one of the most important aspects of your wedding. For the least amount of stress, we recommend booking your venue twelve months prior to your wedding. It may seem like a long time, but venues, especially popular ones, can be booked out over a year in advance. If you are using a house of worship for your ceremony, make sure they are available before booking your reception venue.

865.690.7427 EchelonFlorist.com T | W ¡ 114

Z: ZZZ SLEEP ON IT After you have toured all of your potential wedding venues, sleep on it. Don’t feel rushed to make your decision right after your tour. Sit down with your fiance and make a pros and cons list to make sure you are both happy.

1. CONSIDER MASCULINE INVITATIONS/PLACE CARDS When planning a wedding, it is important to make sure the groom’s interest is taken into consideration. There are several ways to incorporate masculine touches in your big day, even down to the choice of font style, including sticking to bold typography and darker colors over more feminine calligraphy. Instead of going for those blush pink invitations you’ve been looking at, try surprising your guests by going black or silver with touches of blue. 2. EXPERIMENT WITH COLOR AND TEXTURE Don’t count out your spouse just because they’re a guy! Try asking your groom which colors and textures he likes when planning your venue design, as well as his decor preferences. You may be surprised at what he comes up with! One of the best ways to contrast feminine and masculine qualities is to consider color and texture as different elements. Many couples focus on using only a small color palette to design their wedding day style. Try using texture to add extra depth to the reception, including different fabrics, floral arrangements and table settings. Rich, earthy textures such as leather, pewter and bronze, as well as tree bark and moss also help to provide an extra masculine element. 3. PERSONALITY TYPE Chances are over the time you’ve been with your partner, you’ve gotten to know not only a lot about yourself but also about him. Men often fall into multiple personality categories, but can often be narrowed down into at least one or two character types. If your groom is a more outdoorsy type of guy, you may want to consider having an outdoor wedding with some special aspects of any recreational activities he enjoys doing. Maybe your guy prefers to spend time in the art studio and would prefer more creative elements in the reception (that could mean incorporating his own artwork, too!) Does your future husband have a fondness for brewing his own beer? Try booking a beer truck or using the bottles as table settings. 4. SPORTS TEAMS Score major points with your hubby by incorporating some team spirit into your wedding day. Whether he spends his free time watching the latest football game, out on the golf course or cheering on his favorite baseball team as they hit a home run, there are tons of fun ways to win over your crowd (and your man) by having a sports-inspired wedding reception. Using the team logo as a background for your nuptial monogram is one of our favorite ways to do this - and they can be placed on almost everything at the reception, including the menu, drinks, signage and as a light projection on the dance floor. Other ideas include naming signature cocktails after favorite sports teams or athletes as well as having a post-vow wedding tailgate complete with sports decor and memorabilia. 5. GROOM’S CAKE The groom’s cake is a long-standing tradition and totally an amazing way to let your man’s personality shine. Starting back in England in the late 19th century, the traditional wedding cake was considered too feminine for the groom at the time and it was thought that the groom should have a cake of his own. Years later the tradition has made its way to North America, and has since become more fun and wild than ever. Grooms cakes often have elements of activities, sports teams and other likes of the groom, including superhero designs and even beer can or football helmet shaped desserts.

WEDDING 101

Happily Hitched

10 MUST-DOS FOR A STRESS-FREE WEDDING By Katherine Whitehead

T | W · 132

Let’s get real - we all want that fairytale wedding. For most of us that means celebrating our love with those closest to us and kissing our sweetheart at the altar. Although the image may seem picture-perfect, the process can oftentimes get overwhelming. Whether your big day is weeks, months, or a year away, it’s important to keep in mind what things can make or break your big day. Here are ten things to keep your race to the finish line smooth and stress-free.

PROVIDE A DETAILED DESCRIPTION When it comes to your wedding invitations, it’s important to be as detailed as possible. While you may be soaking up your wedding day bliss, guests can get left in the background. There’s nothing worse than having your guests arrive too early or late because they couldn’t find the location of your big day. Even worse is to have them standing around waiting for the ceremony and reception to start. Try to provide a detailed itinerary of how the day will go so you don’t leave your friends and family out of the loop. This will help make your big day easy to navigate for local and out-of-town guests!

BE REALISTIC ABOUT YOUR ATTENDEE NUMBER We’ve all heard the stats that 10 percent of people you invite to your wedding won’t be able to come - and up to 20 percent for a destination wedding. While those numbers seem likely, there’s no certainty that it will be the case for your big day. Many of us will be tempted to over invite and may end up with either too many or too little guests. Try to keep your guest list within the venue capacity and be sure to check in with guests as the date approaches to get an estimate of what to expect.

MAKE PLANS AFTER SETTING A BUDGET It may not be romantic to think about, but setting a budget is one of the most vital parts of wedding preparation. Some couples make the mistake of booking without having the money conversation. Before you get started making plans on where and when, be sure you have a set budget with some extra wiggle room for any unexpected costs that may come down the road.

DON’T BUY YOUR DRESS FIRST Don’t make the mistake of booking a rustic barn wedding after you’ve purchased a ballgown dress. While it may be tempting to immediately purchase a dress after the engagement - it can be tricky to match your frock to the location of your big day. Make sure you have either booked or chosen a venue so you have a general idea of what to look for when you go dress shopping.

DO A HAIR AND MAKEUP TRIAL One of the best ways to save some time on your wedding day is to book a hair and makeup trial with the person who is going to do it the day of, or at a salon that has experience in the bridal world. This will help nail down what you do and don’t like so you don’t end up feeling indecisive about your day of look.

MAKE A RAIN PLAN If you’re planning on having an outdoor wedding, it is vital to have a rain plan. Even if the forecast looks bright, you can never be certain about what may happen the day of. Talk to your venue about what options there are should unexpected weather occur, and if there can be a backup if things get too washed out.

HIRE A VIDEOGRAPHER Don’t let one of your budget regrets be not hiring a videographer. When it comes to nixing the unnecessaries this often gets taken off the list. It may not seem necessary to book someone to film your wedding, but we guarantee that it will be worth it in the end. Videographers can capture your big day in intimate detail, and even get a few things you didn’t even know happened on camera. Maybe it’s your grandparents reaction to seeing you walk down the aisle, or maybe it’s your spouse as he waits for you to walk into the ceremony. Having your day filmed is a great way to ensure your memories are captured forever - and not on your friend’s cell phones.

TIME YOUR VOWS Try to schedule your vows around what time is good for photos. This usually means late in the evening during nature’s ‘golden hour’ just before the sun sets. Spending time with your photographer planning what time of day will make for the best shots and create a photo timeline so you know when to pause to get those photos your friends will be falling head over heels for.

STEP OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE It’s common for couples to be set on a specific or set of traditions for their wedding. While that does work for some people, don’t be afraid to try something new and different. Personalizing your wedding day tradition doesn’t mean you gave to make major changes either. If you’re getting married in the same location as your parents or are dancing to that song that’s been passed down for generations, try adding your own twist on it to make it your own.

ASK FOR HELP Don’t forget, your wedding is your time to shine, not to feel overwhelmed with responsibilities. If things are getting too crazy ask your family and friends for help. Working with a wedding planner is a great way to take off some of the extra baggage, while still being able to have a say into what is going to make your day special.

STATIONERY

How to Write a

GRACIOUS THANK YOU NOTE By Katherine Whitehead

In the age of technology, many of us underestimate the power of a handwritten letter. Though it may be easier to send a text or even say it in person, pulling out that old pen and stationery is one of the most thoughtful ways to show someone you care. It may seem a little daunting to perfect that penmanship again, but trust us, when you follow these tips, your wedding guests will be falling head over heels with your graciousness!

DO’S

Use Stationery: Now is not the time to use the leftover notebook paper from your college days. You don’t have to splurge on expensive stationery from a paper store, but you should definitely try to choose embossed cards with matching envelopes. Handwrite: A handwritten thank you is the best way to go when it comes to the look of your notes. Taking the time to carefully write a letter goes much further than a printed document ever could because it shows that it is more sincere and thoughtful. Personalize: When writing the notes be sure to personalize it for each receiver. The last thing you want to do is send a “fill in the blank” message to everyone and have it come back to you later. Think of the way you would talk to the family member or friend in person,

T | W · 144

and make it feel conversational to them, letting your own personality shine through. Additionally, instead of saying “thank you for x gift”, let them know how you plan on using the item. For example, if a friend gives you a cooking set, say something like, “My husband and I loved the cookware. We can’t wait to use it for the family dinner next week!” Send it: A general rule of thumb is to try to mail your thank you notes within three months. However, remember that getting them done is the most important thing, so if you’re already past the three month mark, don’t worry! It’s always better to send them than not. It’s best to adhere to the “One Year Rule”. This means that if the event happened within the year, it’s still okay to send a letter of thanks.

DON’TS

Ramble: Yes, you may be excited to officially be married and you may have had an amazing honeymoon that you want to tell the world about, but don’t go on and on about it in the note. It’s usually best to keep thank you notes brief. If you want to discuss with that person further, save it for a phone call or in person. Refer to Money: If someone gifted money, it’s important to never acknowledge the specific amount in the note. Although you may be raving about their generosity, they don’t want to be called out for the dollars they spent for you. Thank you notes relating to monetary gifts are best kept general and straight to the point. It is okay, however, to acknowledge the gift and mention that you plan on putting it to good use - without going into specifics.

Assume: It can be easy to think that an in-person thank you is enough. Even if you did say thank you to people at your reception, sending a thank you note is the least you can do for people who came out to your wedding and were kind enough to provide a gift. It is important to remember as well that even if someone came and did not give anything they should still receive a note for their time spent attending your wedding. Become Overwhelmed: We get it – writing thank you notes can be a lengthy process, especially if you have a large amount of guests on your big day. If you feel like it’s becoming too much, step back, relax and breathe. Ask your spouse to join in so it can be something you can do together as a couple, because let’s not forget - the gift was for both of you! the bride doesn’t have to be the only one that sends thank you’s!

CHECKLIST FOR YOUR

honeymoon

Link Hoang on Unsplash

By Katherine Whitehead

Let’s all admit it - we’ve all day dreamed of how amazing our honeymoon will be someday. The sun, the sand, that crystal blue water and quality time with our hubbies is enough to get every bride excited. From long sunny days with margaritas, polar bear kisses in the snow, or couples massages in the spa, your post-wedding vacay is meant for rest, relaxation and a chance to check out from the real world. Because planning for your big day is an adventure on its own, many brides end up saving the honeymoon prep for last. When deciding what to bring on your honeymoon, it’s easy to become over prepared. We’re often tempted to bring way more than what is necessary and often end up with heavy suitcases full of things we don’t need. Whether you’re soaking up the sun’s rays on a tropical island in paradise or hitting the cold slopes of Aspen, we’ve compiled a list of the ultimate honeymoon must-haves for every destination.

HONEYMOON BASICS · Carry-on · Passport, IDs · Reading material for the flights and during downtime · Laptop, camera, chargers · Toiletries · Pajamas · Lingerie to surprise him on the first night · The perfume that you wore on your wedding day (This will bring back memories for him!) · A special outfit to wear to dinner · Workout Gear · Sunglasses · Guide Book · Language Dictionary · Comfortable clothes to fly home in

T | W · 156

WARM WEATHER HONEYMOON · Sunhat · Bathing suits for the beach and pool · Sunscreen · Small cooler for keeping a few bottles of water, beer, champagne, etc., for when you head out to the beach if your accommodations don’t provide something for you to use. · Speaker to take to the beach · Comfortable shoes (sandals or Chaco’s for walking)

COLD WEATHER HONEYMOON · Winter hat · Heavy coat (Patagonia makes great ones) · Thick sweaters · Jeans · Socks - Our favorite are J. Crew’s Camp Socks · Boots for hiking - L.L. Bean Boots are a classic

MAUI, HI For those of you that are still craving crystal clear waters and a bit more of a tropical feel, Hawaii is just the key. Maui is perfect for those of you that want a mix of adventure and luxury. On this island, you can hike to one of the dormant volcanoes, go paddleboarding or snorkeling in the beautiful Pacific, and then relax at one of the high-end resort and spas.

JACKSON HOLE, WY With its absolutely stunning landscapes and breathtaking views, Jackson Hole is ideal for a honeymoon. Known as a gateway to Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone, there is no shortage of activities for the outdoorsy couple. No matter what season you’re planning for, there is so much to do in both the winter and summer months. From skiing, snow tubing, and sleigh rides to rock climbing, kayaking, and horseback riding, there is something for everyone! We also recommend a hot air balloon ride for a little added romance and miraculous views!

CHARLESTON, SC

T | W · 162

Photo by Wes Hicks on Unsplash

One of the South’s most popular cities, good ole’ Chucktown is known to be a great host for a wonderful trip and your honeymoon shouldn’t be any different! Not only is it full of old-fashioned charm and beautiful surroundings (just take one look at the oak lined streets and fall in love), it has an edgy culinary scene downtown. Whether your history buff hubby is interested in touring the many churches and plantations or you’re wanting to snag that perfect Instagram photo down Rainbow Row, Charleston has you covered.

Photo by Kupono Kuwamura on Unsplash

NAPA VALLEY, CA Honeymooning in Wine Country? I’m sure it won’t take much convincing on why this is a good idea. I mean for one, there’s great wine. Two? Romantic backdrops everywhere you look. And three? World-class restaurants with oh so delicious food paired perfectly with your chosen beverage. Not to mention, amenity-packed resorts and spas around. So cue the pour, and head to Napa for an excellent honeymoon!

KEY WEST, FL The southernmost point in the contentinal US is a wonderful choice for a honeymoon! Bring on the tropical breezes, white sandy beaches, and some quality time with your honey under the sun. With its Bohemian and laid back atmosphere, there is no wrong activity choice here, and it’s not all beachy either. Visit Ernest Hemingway’s house or climb the Key West Lighthouse across the road for a bit of history. Whether you’re riding a rental bike all over the island or sampling some delicious key lime pie, you’re sure to fall a little more in love here!

SEDONA, AZ

Photo by Taylor Davis on Unsplash

Hello gorgeous scenery! With the beautiful red rock formations in Sedona, this honeymoon will be one-of-a-kind! For the outdoor loving couple, there are plenty of trails and Jeep tours to really experience this location. However, if you’re looking for more of a relaxing time, there are numerous resorts that feature sparkling pools with gorgeous backdrops. There’s also a thriving New Age community if you want to get your chakra balanced or find out your aura as a newlywed.

NANTUCKET, MA Located about 30 miles from Cape Cod, Nantucket is oh so dreamy for a honeymoon location! Take a stroll through the quaint neighborhoods with cobblestone streets of cute shops and beautiful, nautical inspired homes with the renowned gray shingle roofs. There’s no better place than to take romantic sailing trip either! Stay at a bed and breakfast for a complete quintessential Nantucket honeymoon.

Photo by Nicolai Durbaum on Unsplash

ASPEN, CO Ski bunnies will rejoice at this honeymoon destination! Perfect for those who love the cold weather, Aspen is known as a luxurious destination for celebrities and couples alike. If hitting the slopes isn’t your thing, check out the delectable restaurants, shops, and even take a mountain gondola ride to take in the gorgeous views. Or you can skip all that and cuddle by the fire instead! Oh so romantic!

T | W · 164 Photo by Holly Mandarich on Unsplash

WILMINGTON, NC There’s a reason Nicholas Sparks bases his romance stories in North Carolina, and Wilmington being the location for a few. It’s absolutely full of Southern hospitality and charm, while still feeling totally coastal. The best of both worlds! Take a stroll amongst the sand dunes, check out the Airlie gardens, or hit the pier for sunset, you can’t go wrong here.

Photo by Omar Roque on Unsplash

PALM SPRINGS, CA

Photo by Lena Maeland on Unsplash

This desert hideaway in Southern California has been a longtime retreat for celebrities and Californians since the 1920s. With an air of old Hollywood glamour, Palm Springs is such a fun idea for your honeymoon! Really get into the vibe by renting a vintage car and driving around to view the stunning mid-century modern architecture and trendy art scene. If you’re looking for more of a relaxing time outdoors, Joshua Tree National Park is a short drive away or check out one of the many spas to get into full relaxation mode.
