As you will quickly learn there are lots of options. You should consider enlisting the services of a professional wedding planner. At the very least, consider hiring a day-of planner, to help coordinate the many details of the wedding day. How can a wedding planner help you? They are familiar with the wedding professionals in the market, they have worked at many of the reception facilities and directed in many of the local churches. This knowledge is part of what you need to help plan your wedding and to make the right decisions. Your engagement and wedding will be one of the most exciting times in your life. With all the time and money involved with your wedding, a professional wedding planner can guide you through the decisions and details with grace and ease. And with all this planning and expectations for your wedding day, having someone else to make sure it runs smoothly will help you enjoy the day stress free.

Ashlyn Davidson & Sage Greer 08.31.13 Sage and I started dating at the age of 14. We had mutual friends and were introduced at church. It was an instant attraction, and after a few long phone conversations, he asked me to be his girlfriend before we ever even went on a date! We were together throughout high school and college and were so lucky to have grown up together! Sage is a musician and proposed after singing a song that he wrote for me. All throughout our relationship, he told me that I would know when he was going to propose because he would finally get up the courage to sing for me, so I started crying as soon as he started! Our engagement was only six months, which was somewhat of a challenge. I live in Atlanta, and my mom lives outside of Los Angeles, so most of the planning was finished from a distance and on a few long weekend trips. Our wedding was outside on the lake, and it rained the entire day until two hours before the ceremony. It was so bad that the power even went out as we were trying to get ready! I was amazed at how the clouds parted and so many people helped get everything ready in time. My most memorable moment was walking down the aisle and seeing everything come together with the perfect scenery and weather, surrounded by friends and family. I was also so lucky to have my uncle and father marry us. My uncle did the first part of the ceremony so my dad could walk me down the aisle, and my dad did the last part. Our wedding colors were all neutral, with whites, ivories, and tans, which looked beautiful against the mountain backdrop. We wanted our wedding to be timeless and classic. For the food, I wanted more of a cocktail party feel, so we had several food stations with lots of options. A very good family friend, did the catering, and I was able to work very closely with her throughout the whole process. We had several items that were special to each of us. I love shrimp, so we had a seafood station with shrimp cocktail and a seafood salad. France is one of our favorite places in the world, so we had lots of French cheeses as well! My grandmother’s chocolate pie is legendary, and we had mini versions for the dessert station. The food was my favorite part of the wedding! Our photographer Kadee was amazing. She is so sweet and makes you feel so comfortable! Her photography has a great mix of traditional and fun shots, which are ideal for a wedding! Our bridal shop was fantastic as well. They did all the bridal party attire, and the entire staff at Belmeade was always there to help with anything we needed. Selecting my dress was a perfect experience, and all my bridesmaids loved their dresses as well! For our honeymoon, we went to Playa del Carmen in Mexico. It was a great place to relax and enjoy being newlyweds.

Kelly McCoy & David Lowe 05.11.13 David and I have known each other for over eight years through our jobs at the First Judicial District Attorney General’s Office and the Johnson City Police Department. Our first date was on September 8, 2012. He took me to Salt and Pepper Restaurant for lunch and then to the shooting range at Shooter’s Edge. My first gift from David was a gun cleaning kit. On November 30th, David came to my house and surprised me with a dozen red roses, and then he got down on one knee and asked for my hand in marriage. We were engaged for almost six months. On my wedding day, just being with my family and friends was very special to me. I especially enjoyed having the bridesmaids come to my parents’ home for food, hair, and make-up. I laughed and cried when I saw the special garter my mother made for me. Also, attached to my wedding bouquet was tulle from the veil that my mother wore when she married my father. One of my most memorable moments that day was just simply being walked down the aisle by my father and seeing David waiting for me at the altar. Our colors were pink flowers with long, elegant black bridesmaid dresses. Something special we did at our wedding was the lighting
Kelly McCoy & David Lowe
of the unity candle by David and his sister, Laura Lowe. We placed one red rose and one white rose in the pew where his parents would have been sitting at the church. Also, our groom’s cake was special. It had a police car along with a bride dragging the groom from his car, with him lying on the train of her dress. Her badge was on her dress along with a pistol in her hand. There also was a sign that read, “The hunt is over.” This was designed by Susie’s Specialty Wedding Cakes. We went on an amazing honeymoon on the glorious island of St. Lucia, planned by AAA Travel Agency. We enjoyed the awesome butler service and accommodations at the Sandals La Toc Resort, which included a tour of the island and a candlelight dinner by the beach.

Stephanie Absher & Jeremy Blair 05.25.13
Stephanie Absher & Jeremy Blair
Jeremy and I met when I was in my second semester of nursing school at East Tennessee State University. I was in my clinicals at Holston Valley Medical Center when I laid eyes on my future husband for the first time. It was early in the morning, about 6:30 AM, when I arrived at the hospital. I had walked past the nurses’ station attending to myself as I shyly made my way to my clinical group. Little did I know, Jeremy, who had been a nurse for quite some time and just worked the night shift, had watched me walk by the entire time. He later admitted when he saw me for the first time, he stopped mid-sentence, his mouth gapped open, and time stood still. I still have trouble believing the charmer. As the morning went on, and I received assignment to my patient, I learned that Jeremy had had my exact patient the night before. As he passed by the patient room, he grabbed the courage to stop by and say hello. From that hello, we never were apart. He proposed nine months later in December at the Biltmore Estate in NC. I had no idea he was going to, and the look on my face was – I’m sure – priceless. I was overjoyed! From then we were engaged another year and a half until I graduated nursing school. Our wedding day was the most special day of my life! Aside from the nerves, I could not wait to become Mrs. Blair. We had waited so long for this day to come that when it finally was the day, it seemed so surreal! The whole day, I had butterflies in my stomach, and I knew that I would just break down when the doors opened with all eyes were on me as I looked into my future. But something came over me, a sense of calmness, and the moment I looked into Jeremy’s eyes as I walked closer to him, I became so deliriously happy inside. The moment I did cry was during our vows, as I held his hands, looked into his eyes, and stated my vow to dedicate my life to him. It was truly the most beautiful moment. Our wedding colors were watermelon, hydrangea green and ivory. Along with a father/daughter dance, we felt it was only fair to have a mother/daughter dance at the reception. I fell in love with the song by Carrie Underwood “He is Good” and just HAD to dance with my mom to it. We also played a game that became a hit at the reception. It’s called the shoe game, where the bride and groom sit back to back facing away from each other and hold one shoe from each other’s foot. The wedding entertainer would ask a question such as, “Who is the better driver?” and we each would either hold up our own shoe or our spouse’s shoe. It filled the room with laughter, and the guests absolutely loved it! For our honeymoon, Jeremy and I went through Summit Travel, where we planned a trip to Jamaica at a Sandals resort. It was more beautiful and so exotic than in the pictures. You know you’re at a beautiful place when you see giant peacocks roaming around like pet animals.

Amber Minton & Trey Garrison July 27, 2013
PHOTOGRAPHY BY Jim Goodwin Photography
Amber Minton & Trey Garrison 07.27.13 Trey and I met in 2006, when we were both still in high school. We had gone to church together for a couple years but had never met until his grandmother introduced us. She must have known it was meant to be because we hit it off instantly. We dated through high school and on through college. While vacationing with his family in July of 2012, Trey proposed. We immediately started planning the wedding. Luckily, we had a year to plan, because we needed the entire time. We never imagined that wedding vendors would be booked so far in advance. The most memorable moment of our wedding was when we did our First Look. Our photographers convinced us to see each other before the wedding, and it was one of the best decisions that we made. We were able to express our true emotions in a private atmosphere. I was afraid that it would take away from our wedding, but it made us both so much calmer, and I think we were able to enjoy our ceremony more. We chose to stick with black and ivory for our wedding colors. Our wedding was very simple and traditional. The black and ivory looked very sophisticated and photographed wonderfully. The Goodwins were amazing to work with. They definitely went out of their way to make sure that our engagement, bridal, and wedding pictures were wonderful. Jim and Krisna went on the mountain with us, where Trey hunts, to take our engagement pictures. This meant the world to Trey and me, and we’re so happy that they were willing to do this for us. They made us feel like we were the only wedding they were working with, and gave us their undivided attention at all times. Thanks to Pratt’s, our food was amazing! They made each decision simple, and their decorations on the food tables were beautiful. Our guests had a great time thanks to Night Moves Mobile DJs. They kept everyone up and moving the entire night. The only advice I have for future brides is to enjoy every second of the wedding planning and make sure to stay organized throughout the process. You can never plan or schedule something too early. The earlier you plan, the better! Never take anything for granted, because there’s always another bride that’s one step ahead of you. Don’t skip on a great photographer or videographer. Looking back on our wedding, that’s all that we have to look at and to show our future kids.

Steps To The Best Wedding Celebration Ever
by Pink Lady Andrea
If you dream of throwing the wedding of the decade, plan an event that focuses on honoring your guests throughout the evening. Follow the ten great tips below to planning a celebration your guests with thank you for later – and talk about for years to come!
1. Welcome your guests in style.
Besides stepping into a cozy, clean hotel room after a long day driving or flying to your wedding location, give your guests fashionable treats to make them feel more at home – and welcome! Include everything from local snacks and bottled water to area maps and information on local attractions. They’ll love relaxing with these treats before the festivities!
2. Choose an interesting locale.
Get expressive with where you tie the knot. This can be anywhere from your local zoo to even a museum or gallery nearby. Don’t limit your celebration to traditional venues! Guests will love the unique characteristics of your day because of the one-of-a-kind feel of the location.
3. Keep guests comfortable.
If you’re having an outdoor celebration during summer months, install fans to keep guests cool, and consider fan programs as wedding favors. If it’s during the winter, install heaters to keep the space warm and serve warm drinks. Rest rooms should be nearby no matter where your event is, and you should keep a check on the air conditioning and heat if your venue is indoors. The point is to never let your guests become uncomfortable!
4. Involve them in the ceremony.
Kick off the ceremony with a signature beverage as guests arrive, and allow them to sip and chat before the processional begins. This is a surefire way to break the ice and drum up conversations that will last throughout the evening. Not sure what to serve? A cool, refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) during warm months would be great, and good, old-fashioned hot chocolate would be wonderful during the cooler months. You can also ask guests to give you advice for wedded bliss as you start your new life together. 26 The Pink Bride Magazine
5. The transition from ceremony to reception should be quick.
Let’s face it: if guests have to travel more than 30 minutes between your ceremony and reception site, or if they have to wait that long for your arrival to begin celebrating, they won’t really be in the partying mood by the time the reception starts. Choose venues that are near each other for your ceremony and reception, and cater your timeline to making sure your guests are entertained.
6. Let your guests make a grand entrance.
Treat them to a rock-star arrival by having each guest ushered into the reception hall with drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and lively music. This makes them feel like a true part of the celebration and sets a vibrant tone for the rest of the evening!
7. Keep them interested with a full itinerary.
The party should never hit a lull where guests sneakily start checking their watches. Make sure you’ve got plenty lined up for their entertainment by dispersing special dances, speeches, and toasts throughout the evening. Also consider having a photo booth near for guests to enjoy! Constantly change things up, rather than having long stretches of time with the same activity.
8. Food and beverages are the key to a great celebration.
People tend to chat more and feel more comfortable when food and drinks are involved, so make sure you foster that great sense of welcome and hospitality by ensuring that they always have something to snack on and drink throughout the evening. Ask your caterer to provide servers who will mingle with the guests, refreshing plates and drinks regularly.
9. Dance the night away with great entertainment. One of the biggest details of throwing the celebration of a lifetime depends upon your entertainment choice – meaning your band or DJ. This is so much more than just playing music! A professional band or DJ will be able to read the crowd and play music that will either get them up and dancing or relax them. If you want your guests talking about your celebration for years, put some work into finding the perfect entertainment choice!
10. Plan the after-party!
Give your more party-friendly crowd somewhere to take their dancing shoes after the big exit at the reception. Plan an after-party! This can be at a nearby locale, and food, beverages, and entertainment should be in ample supply. Just make sure that you have important numbers handy in case you need to call someone a cab or need to get in touch with someone fast!

TIPS TO MAKE YOUR
Hair Sparkle ON YOUR WEDDING DAY!
1 HIRE A PROFESSIONAL.
We know some of your are very good at styling hair but hiring a professional is the way to go; especially for your wedding day.
2 DO YOU COLOR YOUR HAIR?
Make sure you talk to your stylist at least 6 months prior to your wedding. This will allow you and your stylist to achieve the perfect color on your big day.
3 OUTDOOR WEDDING?
Be sure to choose a hair style that can take the heat. Also be sure to use lots of hair spray (Maybe have one of your bridesmaids keep some hair spray with them at all times to fix any hair that might be falling).
4 PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.
Be sure to set an appointment with your stylist a few weeks before your wedding. Use this time to share hair ideas with your stylist. This will help you see what you will look like on your wedding day and allows the hair stylist a little practice before the big day!
5 WANT TO BE SURE YOUR HAIR LOOKS AMAZING ON YOUR WEDDING DAY?
Be sure to start using a deep conditioner at least three months before your wedding. Ask your stylist for tips on which conditioner is best for your hair.
6 KEEP IT DIRTY.
Many times hair stylists like to work with dirty hair when styling. Dirty hair can often help the hair style last longer.
7 HAIR CHOICES.
Having trouble settling on one hair style? Try one for your wedding day and another for bridal shots or day after wedding shots.
8 VEIL OR NO VEIL?
This seems to be the big question facing the modern bride. This is your wedding day and only opportunity to wear a veil so why not wear one of the ceremony and switch to a beautiful hair piece or hair jewelry for the reception.
9 BE SURE TO BRING ALL YOUR HAIR ACCESSORIES TO YOUR TRIAL RUN.
This includes your veil and jewelry! You will want to see how this compliments your hair style.
10 CHOOSING THE RIGHT HAIRSTYLE FOR YOU!
You want to look naturally beautiful on your wedding day. If you don't wear you hair up then DO NOT wear it up on your wedding day! Start with your favorite everyday look and let your stylist take charge!

April Barrett & Andrew Richmond
April Barrett & Andrew Richmond 06.01.13
Behind the Story
Andrew has always blown me away, and his proposal definitely exceeded any dream I could have ever imagined! We are both teachers in different school districts. We both had President’s Day off and decided that we were going to spend the day in Pigeon Forge and go to the Titanic Museum while we were down there. His sister, brother, sister-in-law, and niece met us there. We went through about half of the museum and arrived at the Grand Staircase, which is designed perfectly to scale as it was on the original Titanic. There was a “ship captain” telling us to come up the Grand Staircase and began telling us about the story of Jack and Rose and how they fell in love there. What I didn’t know was that when the “ship captain” asked us to come up the Grand Staircase, we were the only two that followed him. At the top of the staircase, Andrew got down on one knee and said, “April, you are the love of my life, my princess, and my angel. April, will you marry me!” I had known very early on that Andrew was the man that I would spend the rest of my life with, and I was so excited that that journey would begin soon! Our wedding day was truly the ending to a fairytale! One of my favorite parts of the day was when Andrew and I had our first look. We decided to have a private moment to see each other before the wedding. This was one of the biggest moments of the day for us! Andrew decided that he wanted us to have our first look on the staircase inside of Allandale Mansion. Andrew anxiously waited for me at the bottom of the stairs. When I had gotten about halfway down the staircase, I asked Andrew to turn around, and I began telling him how much he meant to me. It was such a perfect moment for both of us. Our wedding ceremony went very smoothly! We were married on the front steps of the Allandale Mansion. I arrived to the ceremony in a beautiful horse and carriage, and after we were married, we rode away in it! Andrew was the most helpful man in the wedding planning process. Andrew was with me every step of the way and was a part of planning all of the decisions. He went with me to as many meetings as he could! He was even by my side for the small decisions, such as what we were having embossed on our napkins. His encouragement and help made wedding planning with him fun and not as stressful!

Behind the Story
On our big day, Tyler and I had our first look alone with one another, where I shed a few tears of joy, knowing that I was about to marry the man of my dreams. Together, the toasts at the reception were one of the most memorable moments of the evening. At the reception, Tyler and I laughed where I shed a few happy tears. The toast from the best man, Bryan, brought flashbacks of our childhood with one another and a multitude of mischievous moments. Along with the best man, my cousin Alyse provided recaps of our lives growing up with a family who told tales, our memories together, and the first conversation we had, where I excitedly informed her about Tyler. Finally, my dad gave a toast reminiscing about Tyler and me. He talked about the simplistic life that we had chosen together and how he and my mother were proud of the choice their only daughter had made. The wedding was simple and was based around the theme “Hooked For Life,” where natural earth tone colors like moss green, latte, cream, and white were used. With the exceptional planning from my mother, and with the assistance from Lisa Tolliver and Suzanne Bauguess, along with others, the wedding and reception were as smooth as possible without any hiccups. During the wedding, Tyler and I chose a Lover Letter Ceremony, where we expressed our feelings for one another in a letter that was enclosed in a wooden box with a wine bottle and two glasses. After five years, Tyler and I agreed to open the box together, where we would share our favorite bottle of wine as we read our love letters to one another. Also, for the wedding reception, my grandfather made homemade wine, and my mother and I made personalized labels saying, “Hooked For Life.” For our honeymoon, Tyler and I planned our trip through AAA. The day after our wedding, Tyler and I caught a flight out of the Tri-Cities and headed to Tampa, Florida. In Florida, we boarded the Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas cruise ship, which took us throughout the Western Caribbean. We visited Haiti, Jamaica, and Cozumel.

Kayla Bell & Andrew Oliphant 05.24.13 Andy plays electric guitar in a band named CURTIS. I knew the band before he joined, and when he did, I immediately became a groupie! On our first date, he took me on a boat ride on the lake. In the middle of the lake, he cut the motor and said he just wanted to talk. I melted! I loved that he was comfortable enough to talk with no other distractions but the beauty of nature around us. Eight months later, I had fallen in love with Andy and knew I’d spend the rest of my life with him. On February 21, 2013, I was at work teaching first grade and had taken my class to their Guidance class. While I was working in my room, the school secretary called into my room and asked if I could come into the teacher’s lounge and watch a training video. When I got to the lounge, I was instructed to press play. The secretary left, and I sat down to watch the “training video.” Andy had made a video of himself going to every spot where we had our “big moments” (first date, first kiss, first “I love you”, etc.). The video ended with him standing at the gym door in the school, and he said, “Ms. Bell, please report to the gym.” I got up, left the teacher’s lounge, and walked slowly to the gym door. When I opened it, I saw a candlelit walkway leading to Andy, who was standing under a lighted archway with roses. He got down on one knee, asked me to marry him, and just when I thought the moment couldn’t get any more perfect, the curtains on the stage opened. I looked up to my first grade class standing on the stage, holding signs that read, “Say yes Ms. Bell!” I didn’t say yes, I screamed it! We were only engaged for three months before we tied the knot! Since we got married inside a camp, the wedding party actually stayed on location in cabins. During the rehearsal dinner the night before, it poured rain. I was distraught! After we ate, we walked out on the porch to the most beautiful rainbow that rested right above the Tabernacle in the middle of the camp where we would say “I do” the next day. The day of the wedding was perfect. I was stress-free and just ready to meet the man of my dreams at the end of the aisle. We decided to write our own vows. I woke up at 5am the morning of the wedding, tore up my vows, and rewrote them with tears streaming down my face. I wanted to make sure I told him exactly how blessed I was to be his bride. My dad is a pastor, and I had the privilege of having him walk me down the aisle, give me away, and perform the ceremony. It was beautiful!
Kayla Bell & Andrew Oliphant
I was so in love with our pictures! Although we did not think to hire a videographer, our memories live in the beautiful pictures we now have. Kadee from Kadee’s Approach took the time after the ceremony to be with just Andy and me. We went off on our own in the woods, and she was able to capture immaculate images of love and beauty.

Beth Collins & Eric Anderson 06.29.13 Our wedding day was my favorite and most special day of my life. The entire day felt like a fairy tale day. I can still remember the exact moments of happiness, joy, and nervousness, just like it was yesterday. My daddy had never seen a picture of my dress nor did he have any idea what it looked like. When we did our first look, I can still remember feeling like his baby girl all dressed up in a wedding gown. My favorite moment of the day was having my first look with Eric. I can remember walking down the long walkway at the General Morgan Inn. Jim, our photographer, had chosen such a beautiful walkway for us to do our first look. When I finally walked to Eric, and he turned around, I can still remember the rush of emotions. I had the biggest butterflies, but at the same time, I was calmed after seeing my best friend. I wanted to get to the church and run down the aisle at that moment so I could be married to him. That was by far the most memorable moment before the wedding.
Beth Collins & Eric Anderson
Something very special to me was my dress. My grandmother handcustomized my dress to make it exactly what I wanted. She added personal touches that made my dress unique to me. My greatgrandmother stitched a lot of things, and she is not with us anymore. My grandmother stitched our wedding date into my dress, in honor of her. That was one of my favorite things. Jim Goodwin and Krisna made me feel so calm and relaxed. He took ideas from me, and he shared wonderful ideas, and he knew what he was doing. He made me feel so comforted, knowing his skill level and expertise. When I met Jim and Krisna at a bridal show, I knew that had to be my photographers. Patricia Bohen at the General Morgan Inn was a rock throughout this whole experience. She knew how to make sure everything was perfect, and she did it. The reception flowed so smoothly because of her hard work and dedication. She always made me feel calm in moments of stress. Everything at the General Morgan Inn was absolutely perfect. We went to Ocean Isle Beach in North Carolina. A dear friend has a beachfront condo and allowed us to go to it. It was so nice to be with each other and spend that time together. I am so glad we had the opportunity to do so. It was nice to escape with my new husband.

Heather Walling & Jeremy Hale 06.22.13 It all started when our friends set us up on a blind date in December 2010. We were both excited and nervous to meet each other. Little did we know that this night would begin the first chapter in what would become our love story. Over the next year, our love grew, and we couldn’t imagine life without each other. One of the best decisions we made was to see each other before the wedding. It was a difficult decision to make at first. As a Southern girl, we all know the tradition that the groom is not to see the bride before the wedding. However, it helped to make the perfect wedding day. Our photographers helped us plan a “first look” photo session. We got to have a private meeting in the church sanctuary with only the photographers to capture the special moment. Cable Photography did a wonderful job of making this moment everything we expected it to be. As a nervous bride full of butterflies, this was exactly what I needed. Seeing Jeremy allowed me to forget about the nerves and enjoy the moment. It did not take away from the emotions of the ceremony. I promise that there are a whole new set of emotions when you see your groom standing at the altar, surrounded by your loved ones. It also allowed our day to flow much easier and took away some of our wedding day stress. Before the wedding, we were able to take all the pictures as a couple, wedding party, and with our families. This allowed us to take creative pictures that we might not have had time for if we had waited until after the wedding. The bonus was that after the wedding ceremony, we were able to walk down the aisle, out the door, and off to the reception! All of our wedding professionals combined to make our wedding dreams come true. Each person exceeded our expectations. We were not disappointed with anything that happened that day. My hair, make up, and dress allowed me to feel like a princess for the day. Tricia helped me to find the perfect dress and did everything to help it fit amazingly! MeadowView allowed us to tell them exactly what we wanted, and everything was set up and ready upon our arrival. The food was wonderful. Our cake was beautiful as well as the flowers. Our DJ was very professional and helped the party move smoothly. Cable Photography was able to capture every moment perfectly from our engagement and bridal portrait to the wedding day. We will be able to look back on the photos for years to come and see the love they were able to capture in our photographs. I would highly recommend any of our wedding day vendors to make your wedding day dreams come true!

Cassandra Gilliam & Derrick Widener 06.08.13 Derrick proposed on a cool January night at a cabin nestled inside the Smoky Mountains. We were miles from the nearest paved road. It was a clear night, and the only light was the bright stars and the candlelit path that was filled with thousands of rose petals. At the end of the path was a burning glow with the words, “Will you marry me?” When I turned around, he was on one knee.
Cassandra Gilliam & Derrick Widener
Our big day went off without a hitch. The flower girls and ring bearers kept the mood light. That helped because we laughed to keep from crying. I think some of the most memorable moments were the best man and maid of honor speeches. It doesn’t happen often, but those speeches were priceless. The wedding colors were blush pink and ivory. Our wedding favors were unique. We gave apple butter that was homemade by the bride, groom, and family. Everyone we worked with was great. We were more than happy with all of our wedding professionals. Beverly with Main Street Catering was a one-stop shop. She made our wedding day carefree, and she brought our vision to life. Tricia at Tricia’s by Design was amazing. She can give you the exact dress you want, even if she has to make it from scratch. Robbie with Night Moves was the perfect DJ service. Let him have the reigns, and you are guaranteed a good time. Bobby and Debbie Shelley were the perfect team. Bobby officiated the wedding, and Debbie made sure everything went as planned.

BRIDAL MYTHS
Debunked!
Is wedding advice coming at you from every angle? Determine what’s fact and what’s fiction by debunking these common wedding myths.
1
IT’S NOT REALLY A WEDDING IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW TRADITION. The first person to buck tradition and wear white was Queen Victoria (that’s right...brides have not always worn white). This is now taken for granted as standard attire as is a wedding cake, first dance, bouquet toss and something blue. A wedding simply requires an officiant, license and witness. The celebration of said wedding should be an expression of the couple’s personalities, and sometimes breaking the rules leads to new traditions that are a better fit than those of past generations.
4
The Bride’s parents pay for wedding and reception; groom’s parents pay for rehearsal dinner. Wouldn’t it be nice if Mom and Dad still footed the bill? Not so with modern weddings. This myth goes out the window, as at least a third of wedding costs are now covered by the couple themselves. Families today are pooling their resources and then, together, determining how funds are spent for all related events.
2
Thank-you notes can be sent by email.
3
THE BRIDE CAN ONLY BE GIVEN AWAY BY HER FATHER.
While email is the preferred way of communication for many a message, it is generally frowned upon when thanking your wedding guests. Hand written thank-you notes are far from outdated, and though tedious to a generation of texters, it must be done. Appreciate this dying art, and take the time to communicate as your grandparents would. Years later, a friend will dig out your hand written note, carefully saved. Not your email.
This myth dates back to the days of old, when daughters were literal property of their fathers, and a wedding was merely a business deal for Dad to expand his fortunes through the sale of his daughter. While the tradition still sticks to this day, I doubt very much that modern brides would describe themselves as part of dad’s estate. Your aisle escort should be a person that played a significant and supportive role in your path to finding true love.

WEDDING LUCK (AND MARRIAGE) DEPENDS ON A SIXPENCE, SPIDERS AND SUPERSTITIONS. Here’s the thing about luck... it all depends on the belief that wearing a certain color, carrying a token or changing your behavior will shift future events to their preferred outcome. Luck is mostly used as a way to counter those things completely out of our control and has often been a way of explaining the unexplained. If only making it through the first year of marriage was as easy as saving the top tier of your cake. Make your own luck with careful planning, professional vendors and a positive attitude.
6
Vendors will always give a discount if you ask.
7
If you can’t foot the bar bill, offer a cash bar.
Wedding vendors are not Mexican bazaars where you haggle the best possible deal. While a vendor may run a promotion, expecting to get a discount because you’re a bride is like expecting your doctor to run a special because you’re a patient. This doesn’t make long-term business sense. Instead, plan to attend a local bridal show for show-only specials or giveaways, and be honest about your budget and vision with wedding vendors. Professionals will work with brides to find creative ways to stretch your buck and meet their bottom line.
Cash bars are T-A-C-K-Y... as well as anything else on your wedding day that require your guests to pony up cash. Remember these are the same dearly loved friends and family that bought a special outfit, traveled across the country, paid for a hotel room and bought you a gift for your wedding. During the wedding day, guests’ wallets should stay in back pockets and purses. Tactful Solution: If you are set on offering liquor at your wedding but fear the cost, consider a limited bar with only wine and beer (better yet keg beer, often costing half as much per serving as bottled).

Brides on a budget save big with DIY Projects.
9
Wedding Day is the Bride’s Day.
With the vastness of today’s World Wide Web, the likelihood of finding a bargain can make DIY more costly than one thinks. This is even more apparent when your inner crafter is not well-matched to make DIY magic (but Martha Stewart made it look so easy!). And remember, time is money, even if it is your time. Be realistic about how much time will need to be dedicated to DIY projects, particularly in the last few weeks leading up to wedding day (when the to-do list is never ending and you’d rather be with your family). If the budget is stretched thin, it might make more sense to skip it all together.
While you and your groom are certainly the guests of honor, a bride with her sights set on making wedding day entirely about her is likely to be labeled a bridezilla. Weddings are as much about the happy couple and their new life together as it is a celebration for all the related family members. Instead, find ways to celebrate your family or close friends and their traditions with your new love and the traditions in store for years to come. This ensures your guests feel part of a truly special event.
Your bridal party must have the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen. Today’s bride has thrown out all the rules when it comes to bridal parties. With your closest friends and family by your side on wedding day, trying to stay in the box of specific numbers or even genders just doesn’t work. Nowadays, your maid of honor is now your man of honor, pooches are playing ring bearer and dancing to the altar is what makes wedding ceremonies personal, memorable and unique.

Alexandra Dougherty & Andrew Miller 08.03.13 Andrew and I met while doing a church youth group play my freshman year of high school, and we started hanging out over the course of the next year. Fast forward two summers, and we had become very good friends, and Andrew was about to leave for college. At the last church service Andrew attended before leaving for Clemson, we promised to keep in touch over the phone. A few months after he started college, he asked me out on a date, and we have been an item ever since. The day after our five-year anniversary, I went up to visit Andrew in Canonsburg, PA, where he had moved for work. He took me out to a nice Italian restaurant, and then we rode the incline trolley up to the top of Mount Washington, which overlooks the city of Pittsburgh. At the top, he took me over to a corner and proposed. A little over nine months later, we were finally married. Andrew helped out with the decision making for the execution of the church ceremony. He also was instrumental in choosing the cake flavors. On the big day, there was a broken steamer and a rush to get ready, but once the festivities got underway, there was little that I noticed that went wrong. The look on Andrew’s face when I first started down the aisle with my dad was priceless. Andrew and I both had huge smiles throughout the whole ceremony, and even the guests seemed to notice the pure joy that Andrew and I were feeling. My wedding colors were purple and aqua. The bridesmaids had aqua dresses with purple shoes, and the groomsmen had black tuxedos with purple vests and bow ties. Once all the pictures were taken, and we had hopped into the party bus to get to the reception, the celebration began for everyone. Our reception was in the Grand Ballroom at MeadowView, and it was beautiful. The bridal party entered to the Black Eyed Peas, and our first dance was “Lucky” by Colbie Caillat. We then enjoyed a wonderful meal, had a blast talking, dancing, and people watching the night away. We went to the Outer Banks for our honeymoon. We sort of made a road trip out of it and stopped in both Greensboro and Raleigh. We both did the planning. It was the one aspect that was definitely a fifty-fifty split on planning. My advice to future brides is to make the day whatever you want it to be, but remember to not sweat the small stuff. You want the day to be perfect, but believe me once it gets here, you better enjoy it because it will be over in a flash.

Lisa Wissing & Patrick Fleenor
Lisa Wissing & Patrick Fleenor 06.29.13 My birthday is in September. I always have a “birthday month” that we try to find something fun to do every weekend! Last September, we went to the beach for Labor Day and then went to the University of Tennessee and Florida game, and our last trip was to Nashville for the Warrior Dash and Titans game. I might have suspected he was going to ask at the beach or the UT game. When he didn’t, I pretty much gave up. The Warrior Dash was on September 22, 2012. He proposed at the finish line, covered in mud and all. It was probably one of the most shocking moments of my life but I honestly can’t imagine a better proposal.
Behind the Story
I considered myself a very laid-back bride. I let my girls pick out their dresses and the groomsmen just had to have a black suit. We didn’t care where from, just as long as it was black. We picked blue and pink as our colors. That was one of the hardest things just because so many colors look good together. On our wedding day, I almost managed not to cry the entire day. There was a misunderstanding with the makeup at the mall, but luckily, the fabulous ladies of Lancome were there to help out. I think it worked out the way it was supposed to because my makeup ended up being flawless. I had a freak out moment before I walked down the aisle. Not because I was nervous about marrying Patrick – he is the best thing that has ever happened to me – but because I do not like people looking at me. My dad actually did a very good job at calming my nerves. He talked me down the aisle. We actually talked about where my dog was and who was watching her – ha! The perfect distraction. Once I made it to the end and was handed off to Patrick, the biggest weight felt like it had been lifted, and I felt like I could really enjoy the day. My mom sang our first dance. She is an amazing singer and looked so beautiful while doing it. That was the only other time I teared up. The reception went off perfectly with no mess-ups! My mother-in-law did the set up for us that day, so I had no doubt that it would look perfect, and it did. All of our centerpieces turned out better than I even imagined! I can honestly say that I feel like I had the BEST photographer. I did not want your typical photos. I wanted some fun, unique ones. She did the perfect job of making sure that’s what we got. She went above and beyond for us, and I feel like we have all of our best memories in photos!

Christina Matheson & Mack Chapman,Jr. August 3, 2013 PHOTOGRAPHY BY Jim Goodwin Photography
Christina Matheson & Mack Chapman,Jr. 08.03.13 We met at Tennessee High in 2005. He was a senior, and I was a freshman. We began dating that March and have been together ever since. We got engaged over a family vacation on June 28, 2012, at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, FL. I’m a big Harry Potter fan, so the proposal (which took place on one knee in front of family and friends) was unique and very special. We were engaged for one year and almost two months. Our big day was one of the greatest days we’ve spent together. We had a large bridal party who kept us calm and laughing while we were getting ready and during pictures. Surprisingly, there were no tears; we came close once or twice, but managed to stay calm and collected. The first look was very special. Jim and Krisna cleared out the sanctuary and took some posed shots, as well as shots of us just being ourselves together. We got time alone just to talk, which was great. One thing that was completely unplanned and unexpected was the karaoke at the reception...in the spirit of the party, we, our wedding party, and several other friends and family members jumped onto the stage to sing “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Our colors were royal blue and mint green, which came together beautifully at our baseball-themed reception! We named the tables after MLB stadiums and used baseballs in our centerpieces. The groom’s cake table had a glove, ball, and personalized wooden bat as its decoration. We had amazing wedding professionals, and they made everything go so smoothly. Denise Spears helped us so much with tips on decorating and did a beautiful job on the flowers. Jim and Krisna Goodwin are a dream team! We had a blast working with them. They make such an effort to get to know the couple they’re working with, and that means a lot when you’re looking for someone to photograph the biggest day of your life! Robbie Britton was absolutely fantastic! He kept the party going all night, and the dance floor was never empty. We had an amazing day with the help of all of our fantastic wedding professionals! We are huge Disney fans, so we spent the week following the wedding at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, FL. We planned it together but used Amy Carver with Pixie Vacations to book our resort and help with dining reservations. My advice for brides is to not stress over the planning. Everything will come together. Remember that the pageantry isn’t important – the most important thing is that you get to marry the person you love more than anything in the world!
