One of Matthew’s friends just happened to be dating one of my best friends and when I went to dinner with her one night, Matthew saw her and came over to say hi. That’s when he met me. Matthew sent my friend a message later that night asking who her friend was. And so we all went bowling one night and afterward Matthew and I sat in the parking lot for 2 or 3 hours just talking. Big Day: My wedding day was so perfect. I can’t think of one single thing that didn’t go as planned, except for one. So the preacher starts with the vows. “Lindsey, repeat after me ...” I Lindsey... take you Matthew ... to be my lawfully wedded .... WIFE. The preacher told me to say wife!! So I thought for a minute he would correct himself. He didn’t. Everyone is looking at me to repeat. So I had two options. I could gracefully just say lawfully wedded husband and hope no one notice OR I could call the preacher out in front of everyone. I chose the latter of the two. So I turned faced the audience and said, “My lawfully wedded WIFE” Everyone started laughing. I wouldn’t have changed a thing though, it was so funny and really lightened the mood. The reception went off without a flaw and it was genuinely a perfect night ... almost. My grandmother had been sick for about 6 months. She passed away ON MY WEDDING DAY. No one told me until after the reception because they wanted me to try and enjoy the day. Everyone else knew. And I mean everyone. I felt so, so bad for my poor sweet mother because she left my grandmothers bedside to come to the wedding. When I found out, I was so sad. I was sad for Memaw and for my mom. But everyone told me she found a way to make it to the wedding. She just had a better view than everyone else. Wedding Details: We were engaged for one year. He asked me on May 1st, 2011 and we realized that Cinco de Mayo was on a Saturday in 2012 so we thought it would be a fun day to get married. Not to mention, people would always be having parties on our anniversary. I was a public relations major in college so I decided to forego hiring a wedding planner. It worked fine for me but if you don’t like doing all the leg work, hire someone. The very most important thing about my wedding was that everyone had a good time. I always kept the guests in mind during the planning process. When I saw the chapel, I immediately thought that I needed to have an old baroque theme. I used fuschia, black and silver. Damask patterns also worked their way in. It was baroque with a touch of sparkle. I did my own save the dates. It was an 11x17 newspaper called “Save the Date Times” It included the story of how we met and directions to the chapel as well as info on a hotel in the area.

Is wedding advice coming at you from every angle? Determine what’s fact and what’s fiction by debunking these common wedding myths.

IT’S NOT REALLY A WEDDING IF YOU DON’T FOLLOW TRADITION. The first person to buck tradition and wear white was Queen Victoria (that’s right...brides have not always worn white). This is now taken for granted as standard attire as is a wedding cake, first dance, bouquet toss and something blue. A wedding simply requires an offisciant, license and witness. The celebration of said wedding should be an expression of the couple’s personalities and sometimes breaking the rules leads to new traditions that are a better fit than those of past generations.

The Bride’s parents pay for wedding and reception, groom’s parents pay for rehearsal dinner. Wouldn’t it be nice if Mom and Dad still footed the bill but not so with modern weddings. This myth goes out the window as at least a third of wedding costs are now cover by the couple themselves. Families today are pooling their resources and then together, determining how funds are spent for all related events.

THE BRIDE CAN ONLY BE GIVEN AWAY BY HER FATHER.
While email is the preferred way of communication for many a message, it is generally frowned upon when thanking your wedding guests. Hand written thank-you notes are far from out-dated and thought tedious to a generation of texters, it must be done. Appreciate this dying art and take the time to communicate as your grandparents. Years later, a friend will dig out your hand written note, carefully saved. Not your email.
This myth dates back to the days of old, when daughters were literal property of their fathers and a wedding was merely a business deal for Dad to expand his fortunes through the sale of his daughter. While the tradition still sticks to this day, I doubt very much that modern brides would describe themselves as part of dad’s estate. Your aisle escort should be a person that played a significant and supportive role in your path to find true love.

WEDDING LUCK (AND MARRIAGE) DEPENDS ON A SIXPENCE, SPIDERS AND SUPERSTITIONS. Here’s the thing about luck... it all depends on the belief that wearing a certain color, carrying a token or changing your behavior will shift future events to their preferred outcome. Luck is mostly used as a way to counter those things completely out of our control and has often been a way of explaining the unexplained. If only making it through the first year of marriage was as easy as saving the top tier of your cake. Make your own luck careful planning, professional vendors and a positive attitude.

If you can’t foot the bar bill, offer a cash bar.
Wedding vendors are not Mexican bazaars where you haggle the best possible deal. While a vendor may run a promotion, expecting to get a discount because you’re a bride is like expecting your doctor to run a special because you’re a patient. This doesn’t make long-term business sense. Instead, plan to attend a local bridal shows for show-only specials or giveaways and be honest about your budget and vision with wedding vendors. Professionals will work with bride to find creative ways to stretch your buck and meet their bottom line.
Cash bars are T-A-C-K-Y... as well as anything else on your wedding day that requires you guest pony up cash is tacky. Remember these are the same dearly loved friends and family that bought a special outfit, traveled across the country, paid for a hotel room and bought you a gift for your wedding. During the wedding day, guests’ wallets should stay in back pockets and purses. Tactful Solution… If you are set on offering liquor at your wedding but fear the cost, consider a limited bar with only wine and beer (better yet keg beer, often costing half as much per serving as bottled).

With the vastness of today’s World Wide Web, the likelihood of finding a bargain can make DIY more costly than one thinks. This is even more apparent when your inner crafter is not well match to make DIY magic (but Martha Stewart made it look so easy!). And remember time is money, even if it is your time. Be realistic about how much time will need to be dedicated to DIY projects, particularly in the last few weeks leading up to wedding day (when the to-do list is never ending and you’d rather be with you family). If the budget is stretch thin, it might make more sense to skip it all together.
While you and your groom are certainly the guests of honor, a bride with her sights set on making wedding day entirely about her is likely to be labeled a bridezilla. Weddings are as much about the happy couple and their new life together as it is a celebration for all the related family members. Instead find ways to celebrate your family or close friends and their traditions with your new love and the traditions in store for years to come. This ensures your guests feel part of a truly special event.
Your bridal party must have the same number of bridesmaids and groomsmen. Today’s bride has thrown out all the rules when it comes to bridal parties. With you closest friends and family by your side on wedding day, trying to stay in the box of specific numbers or even genders just doesn’t work. Nowadays, your maid of honor is now your man of honor, pooches are playing ring bearer and dancing to the altar is what makes wedding ceremonies personal, memorable and unique.

I have learned that I am no Martha... none of us are. Find DIY success by being realistic about your crafting skills (and available time). With so many other things to worry about on wedding day, aspiring to a professional shouldn’t be one of them.

Case and point, it took me almost 8 months to stop thinking about refinishing my desk and get to it. And I am still contemplating changing out the drawer pulls. Decoupaging hundreds of tiny votives placecards seems easier enough. Until you are wrist-deep in white goop, pulling all-nighters leading up to wedding day while you second guess the finished look. Assume all wedding related crafting will take much longer than expected. Worse-case scenario, you can still hand things off to the pros if finishing looks unlikely. one of them.

I catch myself saying all the time, “Well, that looks easy enough!” Of course I needed 40 grit sandpaper, not 80! Yeah... so I don’t even know the real difference between 40, 80 or under what circumstances they are most appropriate. While I have no problem bumbling through trial and error projects, likely never to see the light of day, weddings are different. Under immense stress to figure out how all this wedding planning works, learning a new skill within the same timeline can be overwhelming. Save yourself the stress and hand off first-time projects to professionals.

Love Story: We met while we were both studying architecture at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. We had some mutual friends, and whenever the group got together, Aaron and I seemed to pair off. Our conversation and friendship came naturally, and our relationship soon followed. Over the course of two years, we supported each other getting through school and enjoyed our free time together. We were both focused on doing well in school, but we also had a lot of fun. By the time I graduated (one year ahead of Aaron), I knew he was something really special. To celebrate my graduation, we went on a trip to Chicago to check out some of the famous buildings. It was a chilly evening when we went to see the view of the city from the top of the John Hancock Building. I couldn’t understand why Aaron kept wanting to go out on the balcony when it was freezing outside, especially at 100 stories up! But after standing there for a few minutes watching the sunset and listening to him nervously tell me how much our relationship meant, I saw where this was going! Then he pulled a box out of his coat and dropped to one knee presenting a beautiful diamond ring! Wedding Details: Aaron and I were engaged for about a year and four months. While he finished up school and worked, I started a new job and planned. He was great about helping and taking time to visit venues and meet with vendors. My mom and sister were also essential - we really had a lot of fun with planning. My mom had bought subscriptions for 4 bridal magazines to help us along, and I also used ideas found online. Aaron and I really wanted to make our day about enjoying time with family and friends. We wanted everyone there to have a good time, and we didn’t want anyone to have to worry. The professionals we worked with were amazing and made everything run smoothly. We had a family friend direct the ceremony, but with so much time to plan and such a great team, we didn’t feel we needed a planner. We chose our venues first, knowing the First Methodist Church and the Carnegie Hotel were both already so beautiful we wouldn’t need a lot of decoration. We let style of our venues drive the rest of our choices for the wedding details. We picked a dark teal and red (our favorite colors) tied together with a neutral champagne color. We actually chose our colors by looking at paint chip samples! We had an amazing group of vendors to work with - they made everything really come to life! Our DIY projects were our “save the dates” and wedding favors, but we left most of the work to the pros. I also “blinged” my own shoes with glue-on jewels and my grandmother made my veil - something I’ll always treasure.

LOVE STORY: Brian and I began dating on June 25, 2005 and I knew we were meant to be from the start! We both grew up in Johnson City, Tennessee. He was a student at Science Hill High School while I was student at David Crockett High School. Brian is now a graduate of East Tennessee State University with a Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice and a graduate of Walter State Police Academy. He is a currently a Police Officer for the City of Bluff City. I am a graduate of Jenny Lea Academy of Cosmetology and currently a Beautician in Johnson City. We both are very passionate about our careers! I was staying the night with my cousin Ashleigh. She and Brian along with some other guys were going to a high school basketball game and Ashleigh informed them that they would need to pick me up as I was staying with her that night…….. so I tagged along with them to the game. The game was 30 minutes away and we all had time to talk and mingle in the car. As the night went on, our attraction to one another grew and later that night I informed my cousin that I would like to hang out with him again. We dated for about a month but broke it off. Two months passed and we began dating again then he asked me to be his girlfriend on June 25, 2005. We have been together ever since. Little did we know we would spend the rest of our life’s together. Brian asked me to marry him on Christmas Eve December 24, 2010. We are getting married September 22, 2012! THE PROPOSAL: It was Christmas Eve and we were all gathered at his parents house to open gifts. Little did I know that something else was planned that evening. As everyone had opened their presents, I was left to open mine. I had opened them all but one... As I was sitting on the counch Brian brought me over a large bag, in the bag was a Flower Arrangement with Hersey Candy Bars and a Teddy Bear holding a little pouch. As I was looking at the Arrangement completely mind boggled, he said to squeeze the pouch that the Teddy Bear was holding that it would sing to me. As I did I felt the ring. He pulled it out and slid it on my finger asking me If I would Marry Him?.. Of course I said YES as I started crying!! I had waited for that moment for close to 6 years. We were both so Happy!

Bridal Shower Themes These unique shower ideas offer tons of fun, laughter, and gifts for the bride!
1. Alphabet Bridal Shower

Assign each guest a letter in the bride-to-be’s full (married!) name. Then, have the guests purchase items from her registry, wrap the gift, and decorate it with the letter they were assigned. As gifts arrive, spell out the bride’s name! Let her new monogram be your decorating inspiration. If guests are really creative, they can try to find a gift on her registry that corresponds with their letter. Guest favors could be hanging initial ornaments with the first initial of each guest’s name.
Have guests wear their pajamas, put a bunch of pillows on the floor, and shower the bride-to-be with spa-related items! Then put on a good chick flick and indulge in giving each other manicures, pedicures, and facials well into the evening while you snack on comfort foods. Guest favors could be nail polish in the bride’s wedding colors!
2. Around-the-House Shower
Guests can write their favorite recipes on cards and give to the bride along with gifts of non-perishable foods needed to prepare the recipe in a (reusable!) gift basket. Alternatively, guests can give an appliance used in the dish’s creation. Another favorite way of conducting this shower is to have guests prepare each dish to bring to the shower for everyone to eat! Guest favors could be cute cookie-cutters or mini whisks.
Assign each guest a room in the house to purchase an item for from her registry. Decorations should be in the bride’s favorite color to accent her home. Serve foods she loves! Guest favors could be little key necklaces.
3. Honeymoon Shower Encourage guests to purchase gifts for the bride and groom via their honeymoon registry. Alternatively, give guests the option of purchasing a gift that would celebrate their honeymoon location, like flip-flops, sunglasses, or signature drink mixes. Wrapping paper and decorations could follow the honeymoon destination theme! Guest favors could be a keychain with the destination theme – like a mini Eiffel Tower or sand in a bottle.

Love Tory: We met at College in the fall of 2009. He was ease dropping on my conversation with my girlfriends about how guys didn’t know what they wanted. He approached me from a nearby table and assured me he knew what he wanted, and that was to take me to dinner. He put me on the spot, everyone was watching and waiting for me to answer. We went to dinner a few days later, and we have been attached since. Christmas morning 2010, I woke up to my daughter squealing over a gift “Santa” thought was so special he had to leave it by my bed. It was to big to be a ring, so when I unwrapped it, it was a car break pad box, (so Josh). Inside the break pad box was a gold wrapped box that held my ring, and with that Josh asked me to share the rest of my life with him. It was really sweet to see a man I viewed so strong, be some venerable. We are truly best friends. We share all the common interests from being on the water, to cars, sports, just being outdoors. If you spot one of us, the other usually isn’t far behind. Wedding Details: Ah, the beautiful details. We wanted our wedding to reflect who we are, and we added our own details to make that happen. We chose the lake because we love the water and we wanted a location we could visit and see from the water, kind of like our special spot. Our colors were orange and hot pink because they stand bright in a green nature setting. I used beautiful flower balls I hand made, and a assortment of flower arrangements hanging from Sheppard hooks to trail a beautiful walkway between trees to the ceremony. We dressed our guys and girls in a Sundays best. My daughter was our miniature bride, because he wasn’t just getting a wife, but also a daughter and it was important to include her. Josh’s faithful German Sheppard, Sissy, also walked and stood by him. We were married under a beautiful tree, lakeside with the sun shining. When the wedding was over we were announced a husband and wife then displayed as a family with my daughter. After the ceremony, Josh and I departed on his Harley Davidson motorcycle. That reflected our style more than a limo. I made all of our invitations, floral decorations, as well as our knives, glasses and party gifts. We were engaged for 8 months, but we never set a date. One day Josh decides he wants to just do it, so he gathers dates for the area we were interested in and presented them to me. The first open date was 2 weeks away, we took it and the planning began. We planned our wedding in only 2 weeks. We really had family helping us all along the way, they were the most important tool. The most important thing about the day was to enjoy it and savor every moment, and that we did!!!

Nana Broadwater & Jason McKinney 10.15.11 Love Story: We met while we were both living in Blacksburg, VA. After Jason completed medical school, he moved to Johnson City to begin internal medicine residency. We continued dating long distance until a transfer opportunity allowed me to move to the Tricities. Our relationship continued to grow. Following a romantic New Year’s Eve dinner at Troutdale, Jason said he wanted to give me a gift. I was handed a card with an “M” on the outside and simply the word “McKinney” written on the inside. He was giving me the thing he held most dear...his name. When I looked up, he was on a knee with ring in hand. Planning: We were engaged from December 31, 2010 till October 15, 2011. I planned a lot of the wedding myself with the help of my now husband, friends and mother-in-law. I attended the Pink Bridal show in January of 2011 and was able to get a lot of great ideas and contacts. It was extremely helpful and I would recommend it to any new bride. Big Day: The most memorable moment was when we got to see each other for the first time the day of the wedding. We were taking all of our photographs before the wedding/reception so we decided to have our own moment before the wedding. We had it set up like the ceremony where he stood at the front of the church and I walked down the isle to him. He was turned facing the opposite direction and when I was half way down the isle he turned to face me. The anticipation leading up to this was such a special moment... just realizing I was about to marry the man of my dreams. And then seeing him when he turned around sent me into the happiest emotion I have ever felt. Reciting our vows during the wedding was also a special moment for me. It was tough for me not to shed more than a few happy tears. Our theme was simple elegance. We kept the colors basic with black and white with the ‘pop’ of color provided courtesy of mother nature and burnt orange flowers. Since it was an October wedding the burnt orange was a perfect color and really made everything stand out. Pamela Archer did an amazing job at taking my vision with the flowers and turning it into reality. I think the main DIY project was making baskets for everyone traveling from out of town and staying at the hotel.

My maid of honor Kate Powell, who I refer to as my sissy, brought the crowd to tears with her maid of honor speech. Then my family brought the house down with a flash mob dance! We danced and danced until the managers of the Blackthorn club told us we had to wrap things up! Through the ups and downs of wedding planning we never thought we would get to that day but when we did, it will be a day we will never forget!

Wedding Details: Our vision/theme centered around fall and nature. The colors I decided were chocolate brown, ivory, champagne, and burnt orange. Very cliche! I am very outdoorsy and kind of plain. I never wanted an extravagant wedding rather a “fun” one. I started looking online at websites such as etsy and one hundred layer cake. The idea started with a graphic of an old oak tree with initials carved in it. I changed the initals to say kg n dc and the inspiration was born! . From there I took a shabby chic theme and put my own spin on it centering everything around trees since we were getting married in the fall. Everything I found was handmade and expensive so I recruited Darren to make center pieces to keep the cost down. We knew we had a strict budget to stick to. The candle holders I found on etsy were around $16.50 for a set of three and were made from tree branches. I figured I needed 16 sets for the tables. By recruiting Darren to make them it saved us over $250!! Using a downed tree on our property he used a paddle bit to drill a candle sized hole in each tree branch. They turned out beautifully! From there the DIY projects didn’t stop!I made table runners by bulk ordering burlap, thrifted sheer orange fabric to drape over the lighting at the reception, and lined the aisles at the ceremony with stumps from a family friends downed tree. On each stump I placed brown jugs that my grandmother had collected over the years and placed orange artificial flowers in them to tie in all the colors of the ceremony together. Lastly instead of ordering an arbor or pillars, once again, I used a dead tree from our yard that was white washed with age and carved the letter C in each one. Our cake stand was even a tree stump! I took my vision and ran with it. It made our wedding very personal and unique. Everything from the invitations, to the wedding programs, cake, toasting flutes, and sermon centered around Darren and I setting down our own roots and growing our own family tree. Marriage Advice: Marriage takes two strong individuals. At the end of the day the wedding is about the two of you. Make it what you want!

to Cut Wedding Reception Costs The average wedding reception eats up nearly half of a couple’s wedding budget... so when you’re looking for big cuts, to the reception we go. Starting savings by following my top tips for cutting your wedding reception costs.

Cut your guest list. I know, I know... you have heard this one before. But when it comes to finding significant savings, you need to get cutthroat. The average wedding guest will deplete your budget anywhere from $150-$200 per person. Cutting only 10 guests can make a considerable impact as each added guest increases catering and bar costs, favors, placecards, tables and chairs, linens, centerpieces, invitations, thank-you notes and save-the-dates cards (as well as postage), transportation, welcome baskets... it all adds up. Beyond financial costs, many couples feel overwhelmed by large guests and regret not being able to personal connect with everyone on wedding day. If you want a less stress and decreased expenses, take it from me and get to cutting.

Think Seasonal. Generally, when something is in season it costs less. Rather than ask for a specific type of flowers (say pink tulips for a March wedding), allow your florist the freedom to find a similar style in your desired color that’s in season. Same goes for food... chat up your Chef for ideas regarding seasonal ingredients that will be less costly while still meeting your overall vision. The more flexible you are able to give your vendors, the more savings they are able to pass to you.
Decor Double-Duty. A bride looking to stretch her decor budget will get smart when it comes to decor, using bridal bouquets as centerpieces and opting for favors that entertain guests (think photobooths). Another top secret? If your venue happens to be fairly popular (whereas regularly weddings occur Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays), consider becoming a buddy bride. If Bride A is getting married on a Friday night, who’s to say Bride B can’t reuse the same rented white ceremony chairs on Saturday and split the costs. After all, the rental company won’t be picking up until Monday. Use the venue coordinator to act as the go-between to these sneaky savings.
Open Bar Opt-Out: Here’s a little something to keep in mind... guests will drink what you offer them. While your cousin may have started with the best of intentions, an open bar encourages travel down the irresponsible path of body shots and taste testing creative beverage combinations. All on your dime. As a venue director, it was not uncommon for a festive group of wedding goers to rack up a bar bill of upwards of $7000-$10,000. Nowadays, beer and wine is the expected standard at most weddings, particularly as hosts are more thoughtful regarding budgets and guests safety. Consider closing the bar an hour early and offer a late night coffee bar. Even better yet, shift your reception to a daytime affair where mimosas served with specialty lemonade and flavored ice water will quench your guest’s thirst. Insider Tip: Thinking your wedding guests can chip in to cover bar costs by way of a cash bar is a big no-no. Remember these are the same dearly beloved friends and family that bought a special outfit, traveled across the country, paid for a hotel room and bought you a gift for your wedding. During the wedding day, guests’ wallets should stay in back pockets and purses. Period.

Hire a Wedding Planner. No, I’m not trying to pull a fast one over my readers... quite the opposite. Wedding Planners are pros when it comes to money saving tricks and more than not will stretch a buck further than you ever thought possible. With the inside track on great deals and established relationships with local vendors, their savvy expertise makes frugal fabulousness the new black. As the old adage goes, sometimes you need to spend money to make money. Investing in a wedding planner just might be the best advice I can give you.

Don’t Say This During Wedding Planning! “Sounds good, whatever you think.”
If it only mattered what your bride thought, than she wouldn’t take the time to ask you for an opinion. Contrary to popular culture, most brides desperately want their groom more involved with the wedding planning. While there will be some aspects that you have less of any opinion than others, it is important to not fall mute for majority of the major decisions. After all, a wedding is the first step in your new life together and I’m betting you want to have a say in that.
“How much?!”
Constant criticism of how much is being spent really takes the fun out of planning a wedding for all parties involved, particularly your bride. Instead, map out a budget that you can both agree on for the wedding so you both have a clear understanding of how much money is being spent where. With financial woos the number one precursor for divorce; start off on the right foot.
“I’m really whipped... I just want to chill. Can all this planning stuff wait?”
Let me clarify... grooms get a hall-pass on this statement a couple times. By the third, fourth, every time we ask for help and you responsed with another excuse to postpone, our patience is wearing thin. Brides see a mountain of work ahead of them when it comes to all the details of a wedding. From decor to family drama to slimming down for our dream dress, we see our own sacrifice everywhere and need you to pitch in. After all, the wedding is for the both of us.
“Didn’t I mention that? I must have forgot.”
It is important that both bride and groom are kept in each other’s loop regarding the wedding, guest’s travel plans and Mom’s sudden one-eighty considering her help with the rehearsal dinner. A wedding can be a logistical nightmare and “forgetting” to mention vital details can derail a timeline and add a lot of undue stress to your bride. When you have new wedding information, make a point to share this with your fiancé, pronto. I’m betting there’s an app for that...

Agreed, tying ribbons around hundreds of wedding programs or filling custom seed packets for favors may not be your cup of tea. But your bride is excited and loves the details that make your day personal and heartfelt, including those that are somewhat time-consuming. And when you love a person you do things that are not important to you because they matter to the person who matters most to you.

3. Hold your breath – you do not have to wear your dress! If jeans and a t-shirt define you much more than your wedding dress, incorporate them in the bridal session.
4. Incorporate only things you love. If you do not ride a motorcycle, fix cars, or go sailing, why would you have your photos taken on a bike, under a greasy car, or on a boat? Tiffany Whitesides & Curt Taylor Jr 04.14.12 Love story: Curt and I met at a small restaurant in St. Clair, TN just down the road from where he grew up. I was a waitress, originally born and raised in NC who had come to TN to make my own name. I waited on Curt on a Friday night fish fry and he stared into my eyes every time I spoke to him. I thought he was a rather strange guy. He says it was love at first sight. He came back into the restaurant the next day and we talked almost my whole shift. I was head over heels for him; especially when he shared a hot fudge cake with me. We went on our first date a week later and I had the best time. I gushed about how wonderful he was to my parents and how I couldn’t wait for them to meet. I took him home to meet the folks on my dad’s birthday weekend. Dad said I couldn’t have given him a better gift than that weekend. On December 14, 2012 both of us were snowed out of work, so we did our usual thing on days like that; ate breakfast at bojangles, watched it snow and rode around on some back roads, hanging out the sun roof taking pictures. We stopped in a shopping center and Curt went inside one of the stores to have some jewelry picked up that I was having fixed. He come out with a gift bag and said “we are this far in, lets make this official” and there was my ring. It was so perfect to me; just us spending the day together. Wedding Details: The only thing I was sure about when we first started were my colors. I was dead set on the green, black and white. My mom talked me into having a touch of pink and it turned out beautiful. My mom was the biggest help with her beautiful and creative mind. I just told her what I wanted and she delivered. Since it was a home wedding, the most important thing to me was that every one was comfy. Family had to be a big part of the day. We honored one of our family members that had passed but still meant a great deal to us. It was like they were there standing over our shoulders giving us their blessing. Our first plans were to have this huge wedding in an extravagant venue. We were already homeowners though and one year before the wedding, we had a huge expense that was unexpected. We couldn’t change the date because the 14th meant a lot to the both of us. My mom shared her vision with me about having it at our home. After much consideration, we agreed. Everything flowed just perfect and the weather was beautiful. Everything we could get away with, we did ourselves. Both my mom and I are very crafty and I wanted to have control of everything I could get my hands on. My mom did the isle runner, linens, and the runners. My parents also cooked and prepared all the food and drinks. I did all the flowers.

Love Story: Josh and I were introduced by a mutual friend who had known us both for several years and thought we may be a perfect match. After the initial double-date dinner, Josh called me the very next night and we began dating as often as possible. I found that he was the most amazing man I had ever known, and perfect for me in every way - and most importantly, the answer to my prayers for God’s choice of a lifelong companion for me. After almost six months of dating, Josh surprised me at home while I was preparing for what I thought would be a usual evening out. I found a beautiful Easter basket waiting for me in my bedroom - I was so excited about such a sweet gesture, that I almost missed the small box in the center of the basket. When I picked up the box and turned around, Josh was there, down on one knee, giving the most beautiful speech I had ever heard and asking me to be his wife. I was so shocked and elated, I could hardly think or speak, but managed to let him know that, of course, I would love nothing more than to marry him. And that was the best day of my life, until our wedding day... Wedding Details: We were only engaged for about four months, so we didn’t spend a large amount of time planning. Josh and I did all of our planning together - we discussed and decided on every detail together. We do have very similar tastes, so most decisions were easy - but when we did disagree, we learned to compromise - and some things were simply give and take. It was SO much fun planning our wedding together, and I would definitely recommend this for all couples - it made every detail so much more special and meaningful to us. Of course, the most important thing to me was knowing that, without a doubt, I was marrying the one perfect man for me - even if all our plans went wrong and details didn’t work out at all - I was still being blessed with the man God had chosen to be my husband, and in the end, that’s all that mattered. It was important for us to have a small, intimate wedding, involving our families. It was so special for Josh’s father to perform our ceremony, for our brother and nephew to be our musicians, and to have our little cousins as flower girls. We wanted the wedding to be outdoor and have small touches of color to accent the vibrance of summer. We decided to make everything simple, but elegant. I wore a strapless A-line gown with a sweep train and carried a bouquet of star-gazer lilies and white roses. Josh wore a charcoal pinstripe suit with a fuschia rose boutonniere, and a paisley print tie with touches of coordinating fuschia. The star-gazer lilies dictated the most vibrant fuschia color, which we also used for flower girl dresses, chair cover ties, and engraved guest fans placed in each chair. Matching flower arrangements were placed around the gazebo and on the reception tables in the Parlor.

New Canton Plantation serves as the Tri-Cities historic Antebellum Wedding facility. Samantha Cox & Ryan Thayer 08.13.11 Big Day: The wedding day started off with all the girls coming over to my house to get ready and have brunch. We tried to make the day as stress-free as possible. After everyone had their hair and makeup done we all went on to The Centre so we could finish getting ready. While all the girls were getting ready all the boys got together and went to Ryan’s uncle’s farm to go shooting. We tried to keep them away from The Centre as long as possible since that’s where all the girls were going to be. One of the most memorable things about the wedding that happened was when we went outside to take pictures in the grass the tulle of my dress attracted all kinds of bugs. We were out on the grass and all of the sudden I looked down and I see all these bugs crawling up my dress. I absolutely hate bugs and I definitely didn’t want them on me. I started flipping out. I remember practically throwing my bouquet to one of the girls and getting out of the grass as fast as I could. Then after everyone realized what was going on they all came over to help get all the bugs off of me. The boys arrived not too long after we went back inside so they could start their pictures. It got a little chaotic at that point trying to make sure we didn’t see each other before the ceremony. After the boys came back in from taking their pictures it started to rain. I really thought I was going to cry because I did not want to have the wedding inside. About 45 minutes before the ceremony was supposed to start the rain stopped and the sun came out so they were able to get everything wiped down and ready to go again. I was so thankful that the rain had stopped and it really cooled it down outside. Before I knew it I was walking down the aisle and getting married! Wedding Planning: We were engaged for almost a year. As soon as we got back from vacation after Ryan proposed I started planning. I think I drove him crazy asking him what he liked and didn’t like. Eventually he pretty much gave me free reign. I had several friends that had gotten married already and they were great with all the advice they gave. Ryan’s sister Kim and her friend Terri were also a great help in helping me keep everything organized and how we wanted it. Our colors were purple and green. I tried to incorporate them in as much as I possibly could with the bridesmaid dresses, the flower petals lining the aisle, the linens, the cake, and the favors. I made the wedding favors. I made two coasters for everyone, one in purple and one in green. We had originally planned on having around 150 people so I ended up making 300 of them. It was a lengthier project than I had originally thought. Luckily I had some really great help from several of my bridesmaids and we got it done a lot faster. They were a big hit so I was very pleased that all our hard work paid off.

Wedding Day: The day of the wedding was perfect. We woke up to some rain, but it quickly turned to sunshine for the rest of the day. During the morning, I was calm on the outside, but nervous on the inside; not about getting married, but about how everything would come together. I held it together all day until right before I walked down the aisle with my dad. All of the emotions from the months leading up to, and that day, hit me like a ton of bricks. I cried walking down the aisle, I cried during the prayer, and I cried through the whole ceremony. I was a full on mess, but I was so happy. The ceremony was beautiful. The reading my aunt did was very “us”, and once we were pronounced husband and wife, you couldn’t wipe the smiles from our faces. Our reception was great! The food was amazing; you know food is good when you hardly get to eat, but still talk about it months later. And the cake - oh, the cake! It was delish! I’m counting down to our anniversary to have some more of it. Looking back at pictures, you can really see the emotions, and it takes me back to the exact moments. I know that neither of us would change a thing about the day. It was perfect for us. Of course, nothing goes off without a hitch, but it’s okay. We got married, and there’s no better outcome than that. Wedding Details: Our theme was “country chic” and our colors were navy, pale pink, and peach. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to use mason jars, and we had them everywhere; even our invitations were in the shape of mason jars. I made all of the programs myself, and my papaw made the cross we used for the ceremony. Advice: My advice would be to let anything that goes wrong on the day of roll off your back. Your guests aren’t going to know the difference if you walk down the aisle to Canon in D instead of The Beatles. Just let it be. The end result will be the same.

Amber Duncan & Aaron Ebarb 06.23.12 The proposal: Total surprise! I had come home from work on a Wednesday afternoon. It was Harvest Day, the fall festival at the school I work at, and I had been pied in the face! When I got home from my exciting day at work I opened my garage door to find roses lining my way in. When I came inside, Aaron had made me a pathway of rose petals and candles leading from the garage to the bedroom. He had made a collage of petals, candles, pictures, and memorabilia of our relationship on the dining room table. When I got upstairs, he was waiting in a circle of rose petals while our song was playing on the ipod.

Wedding Vision: I am the youngest of three daughters, the last to get married. Both of my sisters had gotten married in a church and I decided I wanted to be different! I have always dreamed of an outdoors summer wedding. Aaron and I decided on a barn setting and after researching several surrounding areas, we found Allandale. When visiting Allandale, we both loved the pavilion barn and the pond. It didn’t take us long to deicde that was where we wanted to have our special day. We chose the pavilion barn because of the rustic look along with the beautiful surroundings.
A Little About the Two of You: We are HUGE Kentucky fans! We have a dog named Zoe that we rescued from the local shelter. We enjoy working out and traveling. Our families are a very important part of both of our lives and we are very lucky to have their support and guidance. Amber- Born and raised in Johnson City. Graduated from ETSU in 2010 with a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education and will gradute from Lincoln Memorial University in the summer of 2012 with a Master’s of Education in Administration and Supervision. I am currently a Kindergarten teacher at East Side Elementary in Elizabethton. Aaron- Born and raised in Johnson City. I went to Science Hill High School and then chose to serve in the Navy after high school where I became an Aircrewman. I now attend ETSU and study Biology.
Why We Chose Kadee’s Approach: Finding a photographer was the first thing Aaron and I decided we need to do. Kadee was the first photographer Aaron and I met with. After speaking with Kadee and her husband, Aaron and I both had a good feeling about them. We met with several other photographers and we didn’t have that comfortable feeling with any of them. When we met with Kadee and Zack, we loved the albums they showed us. Their pictures are modern and natural, instead of the traditional poses.

Ashley Taylor & Stephen Moore 03.31.12 Big Day: The day of the wedding was so full of excitement and nerves, it goes by so quickly! I had woke up that morning and had coffee and breakfast with my Mom and then hurried up to my room to get ready for hair and make up, before I knew it I was putting on my wedding dress and getting ready to meet Steve. I had stayed calm and relaxed that morning up until the time I had to get on the elevator to go see him. We chose to do a first glance meeting before the ceremony to help with jitters and save time on pictures and it could not have been more perfect! Our photographers, Gary and LaDonna Cable, made this moment so special we didn’t even know they were there! We were able to get priceless photos of our initial first glance. Had Steve and I chose not to see each other prior to the ceremony, there is no way either of us would have been able to get through our vows without just loosing it! I abosultely recommend this to anyone who is not worried about a little old school superstition. I would not have changed anything about it. Wedding Details: I have been planning our wedding in my mind since about our 3rd date. I knew what I wanted and so I hired a wedding planner, Lisa Tolliver, to help my vision come to life. Lisa, along with our florist, Connie Timmons, brought my simple but yet elegant theme come to life! I chose a deep purple for the bridesmaids dresses and the guys wore khaki suits from Jos. A Bank. All of the accents were soft pinks, tans, greens and browns to really pull a soft color palette in with the dark color of the bridesmaids dresses. It turned out beautiful! One of my favorite parts of our wedding decor was our cake topper! I had seen the idea over two years ago in a bridal magazine and remembered it ever since! It was a custom made wooden replica of Steve and I in our wedding attire Wedding Advice: The best advice I can give to any bride planning a wedding is: take all the help that is offered and DO NOT stress the little stuff. I went into planning a wedding with a laid back and stress free attitude, or atleast tried to, and I’m so happy that I did. It’s so nice to let the little stuff roll off your back and really enjoy the process, my Mom and I got to share some really neat and special moments together that we may have missed out on if I had tried to micro-manage the whole wedding. My best advice for a groom is smile and nod and agree when needed and pitch in when asked to. Steve was really good about letting me have the wedding of my dreams, but also staying involved when I asked him to be there for something. Most of all, enjoy it!

of Bridal Shows
Your engaged and now it is time to start planning… With so many things to see and vendors to talk to, wedding shows can be overwhelming and feel a bit like, well the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Savvy brides see through the chaos and make the most of what bridal shows have to offer by way of inspiration, advice and vendor giveaways. With these 7 tips, you can too!

Come Prepared. The boy scouts were on to something here… Make sure you have the essentials. Have a pen to take notes and sign up for all the wedding day give-aways. Better yet, pre-print mailing labels with your name, phone number, email and wedding date to save a ton of time. Also, remember to bring your camera to capture all the wedding inspiration on display… vendors are putting their best decorating foot forward and you will want to remember everything you saw.

Don’t eat (a lot!) before you come. Weddings have food and so do wedding shows. Caterers and bakers use this opportunity to showcase great samples of their food so hold off on lunch & come hungry!

Leave the little ones at home. Children have small attention spans and even with all the cake samples, will quickly lose interest becoming dead weight. It is distracting to have fussy or bored children (or adults!) in your party while you are walking the show floor and trying to talk with vendors. Think carefully about who will join you on wedding show day.

Do your homework. It’s worthwhile to familiarize yourself with the services you are still seeking, what questions to ask and who is exhibiting at the show. This helps to maximize the time you have at each booth which can sometimes be limited with busy shows and popular vendors. Having other details such as your wedding date or budget mapped out, are also helpful… you don’t want to fall in love with a vendor only to find out, that they are booked on your wedding date or out of your price range.

Come ready to make a deal. Many of the vendors will offer show-only discounts and specials for brides ready to book. If you have done your research and have your checkbook in hand, the savings will add up fast. Keep in mind that vendors are not as busy during the fashion show so if you have your dress, use this time to talk one-on-one.

These boots are made for comfort. Remember the show floor is big with lots of walking so leave the heels for later that night and wear comfy shoes!

FREE tickets! Many local vendors are given free show tickets to hand out to perspective brides that they would like to personally invite to the show. If you plan to set up meetings with vendors before the show, make sure to ask if they will have a booth and you just may get free tickets.

Love Story: We met in highschool and our first date was the homecoming dance his senior year and my sophomore year. We had been dating for 7 years when we decided my senior year of college to buy our first house together. After we were all settled in one night we started talking about what the future held for us and that is when he pulled the ring out from under the blanket and asked if I would marry him. I was completely clueless he had the ring in his hand. My graduation was coming up and he told me he had planned on asking me at a family picnic we were having at our house that day but he couldn’t wait till then. wedding Details: We were engaged for a year and I had a lot of help from Mom and Brother. I used a lot of wedding blogs to get ideas. We were unexpectedly relocated to Texas 4 months before the wedding so I had to get most of my planning done before we left. I just wanted our wedding to be simple and fun. The most important thing for us was good food. Pratt’s Catering was absoultely amazing. It was everything and more that we wanted for our wedding. We chose orange and white which came from our love for Tennesse football. We had a Tennesse cake which had a white and orange checkerboard bottom and football helmet on top.I added green in to have an extra pop of color. I really wanted to have goldfish so I decided to put those in my centerpieces along with floating gerber dasies. We used smaller vases with floating candles. One of my favorite DIY projects was the mailbox my brother helped me paint. We put a T on one side and The Chris’ on the other. We used it for everyone to put their cards in. It has been a really cool keepsake.

Whitney Turner & Christopher Hanor 05.05.12 Love Story: Chris actually sent me a Facebook message out of the blue because I had shown up in the “people you may know” side bar. After seeing my goofy profile pic and ready my verbose profile, he realized we had been praying the same thing verbatim for over seven years, and he had promised himself if her ever found anyone praying the same thing for their future spouse, he would ask them out on the spot...so he did. Had never met him or heard of him until I get a random Facebook message February 2011. So of course I said “no, I won’t go out with you!” because I thought he was quiet a creeper! But after he persisted I invited him to a business meeting of my marketing associates, where I felt safe. He joined our business team and we soon found ourselves spending countless hours in Chickfila and Earthfare discussing big life goals, dreams, and heart’s desires. He wanted to take me on a “real date” so he had to survive a strenuous interview with my father. After coming out alive, he took my on our first date to Texas Two-Step dance lessons and thai food. The first and biggest thing that attracted me to Chris was his like-hearted passion for Africa, missions, and medicine. I heard him saying some of the same things about what he was called to do with his life as I am. He is great with kids, especially my four younger siblings & has a phenomenal sense of humor and storytelling ability (complete with multiple accents). Wedding Details: We were engaged from February 10th to May 5th, so we had about 3 months to plan. We didn’t hire a planner, but I did use a brief calendar planner from a book. The most important thing for our wedding was we wanted to the Holy Spirit to be present in a tangible way that our guest experienced a worshipful atmosphere that was full of Jesus. We also wanted our guests to have fun at the reception, and truly indulge in the CELEBRATION part of the party. The vision for the wedding was fun, laid back, simple, and full of Jesus, friends & family. We did all the centerpieces, bridesmaids bouquets, & church decorations ourselves. We got most everything at Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, and the Dollar Store. We tried to do as much DIY to keep costs down and keep it personal. We didn’t want to put a lot of time, money, or man power into “fru-fru” details that no one would notice, and would just make us worn out. I wanted to enjoy every part of the process along the way, because you only get to do this once! Our colors were chocolate brown, burnt orange, and teal.

Love Story: We met at Bristol Regional Medical Center. We were both working one night and a mutual friend introduced us! At first we both played like we didn’t want anything serious however we ended up being very serious! Jacob is a perfect match for me because we enjoy a lot of mutual things, he has been a wonderful father figure in my children’s lives! A truly amazing man! Jacob and I were getting ready on Valentines Day 2010 to go to a wedding ourselves I was in the kitchen and our dog ran through the house and as I went to catch him I noticed a box around his neck I brought him into the kitchen and there was Jacob standing and smiling and he asked if I would marry him! Wedding Planning: We were engaged for 1 year.... My family and friends helped with all the planning and arrangements. Of course I had help from my maid of honor and my sister-in-law would have been called the wedding planner! I think the most important thing about my wedding was to have all my famIly and friends involved with our special day! It was very important to us that everyone enjoy their time. Our colors were Malibu blue and black. We really didn’t have a set theme other than we just wanted the wedding to represent the love we have for each other! Bringing the final day to life was crazy! After multiple shopping trips and trips out of town just for candy to make a candy table was insaine but with the help of my sister-in-law and my maid of honor it made my job easier Wedding Advice: Breathe and try to enjoy planning the wedding of your dreams! I look forward to a long lasting friendship that we can celebrate on July 9th every year!
