Nothing like a Mother’s Love
HAUTE Pink
Mothers are a lot like God. They see all, know all and are there to help...if you let them and love you unconditionally. Old school mothers were cut from a different cloth. They didn’t take any crap and knew all of the tricks. Kinda makes you wonder what they were like as children. I would love to go back and hang out with my mother as a child to see what kind of mischief she got into. As a teenager, I wonder what kind of boys she was attracted to. My mother frequently tells me about some of the things she used to do as a teenager and I always stop and look at her with my mouth wide open. I think shock and awe adequately summarizes my response. The girl she was, sounds nothing like the woman she became, except for this obsession she has with mayonnaise and giving orders and being quite frank. Who wouldn’t love to hang out with their mother when she was dating your father? I know I would like to have been a fly on the wall when that relationship was born. I remember my parents telling me the story of how they met. She was walking down the street with her sister-in-law in shorty shorts, my dad honked his car horn, she said something flirtatious. Then she and her sister-in-law hopped in his car and the rest is history. Fast forward about thirty years, a cute guy honked at me on the freeway, we exited and exchanged numbers. When I shared the story, I was chewed out...by my dad. My mother on the other hand, playfully chastised me and asked was he cute and what kind of car (yes he was and it was a Porsche). Her reply to my dad, “What’s the difference in what she did and what we did?’ His answer, “Things were different back then.” That brief moment I think I saw a little bit of the girl that stole my dad’s heart. No matter what, your mother will always have your back, tell you when something looks good or bad on you, will quickly point out when something doesn’t feel right but will allow you to make your own decisions, secretly prays that all the men who aren’t right for you will disappear, and prayers you understand when she says, “Not everything that looks good, really is good for you”... applies to everything from shoes, to men, to jobs, to houses, to hair color. Trust her, she’s been there done that and learned the hard way. Here’s to our mothers, may we grow up to be as wise, smart, loving, chic, fun, patient, sophisticated, and full of hope as the women they didn’t know they would become.
