A Lifetime of Sweet Adelines
“When it's my daughter's organization, I want the kind of education, opportunity, growth, and leadership development I’ve experienced to continue. As Sweet Adelines, we continue to build that legacy to leave for everyone we love and everyone they love.”
“When you donate, you're investing in every member. You're helping us change the world. You're helping us empower voices everywhere.”
“Singing is a lifelong joy, and singing in community with other like-minded people is something that so few people get to experience. We are so lucky to be able to do it.”

Welcome to Kansas City
Welcome to the Sweet Adelines International 2024 Convention and Competition — a week filled with education, entertainment, and excitement. Kansas City is set to shine even brighter as we take the stage this week!
Renowned for its rich history and vibrant character, Kansas City is known by many nicknames: the City of Fountains, the Barbecue Capital of the World, Paris on the Plains, and the Cradle of Jazz. The city also has a significant place in barbershop history. In 1938, O.C. Cash and Rupert Hall found themselves stranded at the Muehlebach Hotel during a snowstorm. While reminiscing about the golden days of barbershop harmony, they decided to meet again in Tulsa to establish a men’s quartet singing club. This marked the inception of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. A plaque at the Muehlebach commemorates the historic meeting of Cash and Hall.
Edna Mae Anderson formed Sweet Adelines just a few years later, offering women the opportunity to experience the joy of singing barbershop tunes. We owe a debt of gratitude to these early barbershop enthusiasts for preserving our cherished barbershop art form.
Convention week offers an opportunity to be inspired each day. From breathtaking performances on the competition stage to hands-on learning with our esteemed champions and faculty, there’s something for everyone.
Kansas City will be alive with harmony this week both musical and personal. Our shared love for barbershop harmony brings together old friends and new faces. Every note, every laugh, every moment builds the kind of harmony that extends far beyond the stage. Enjoy every minute!
In harmony,
Mary Rhea International President
Honor a member, director, leader, or any Sweet Adeline who has made an impact on your life.

A Master Arranger, Joni has hundreds of arrangements to her credit and was instrumental in developing educational tools for arrangers. In February of 2009, Sweet Adelines International lost an icon. Joni was a tenor of 4 for the Show quartet, 1984 International champion quartet, a member of the International Judging Program, certified in three categories, and served as a chorus director.

The first International Champion Chorus trophy was retired in 1995. It was designed by the Balfour Company and represents Sweet Adelines International’s continuing efforts to harmonize the world. Currently a new trophy is presented each year and is retained by the winning chorus.

It's The Music That Brings Us Together
From the Composer/Arranger
This song was written shortly after “shelter-in-place” for COVID-19 started. As with many barbershop ensembles, my chorus had just started virtual rehearsals and it was inspiring to see how many barbershoppers still wanted to find ways to rehearse, learn more, talk about music, and most importantly, stay connected to all of our barbershop friends. It’s easy for me to get emotional about the impact barbershop has had on my life, but with the craziness of everyday life, we don’t always get a lot of opportunities to remember WHY barbershop is so important in our lives. Sharing a song or a great tag with friends is one thing that made us all go nuts for barbershop in the first place. Even when we're not able to sing together, it's incredibly inspiring and helps us remember WHY when so many still do so much to virtually get together with the friends that make music so meaningful to all of us.
Performance Notes
1) This key (F) should work well for female barbershop ensembles, but feel free to pitch it up or down if that better fits your particular ensemble’s vocal strengths. This arrangement is also available in A b (TTBB for female voices) and C (SATB for mixed voices).
2) There are optional notes shown in measures 17 (bass), 18 (bari), and 20 (bass). These work just fine, and may be considerations for your ensemble depending upon the voices and the key you choose.
3) The song starts with a simple message: “it’s the music that brings us together,” and continues to tell the story of what music means to us. From sweet melodies to grand harmonies, music is the emotional fire that fuels our souls. Music is passion, music helps us through good times and bad times, and when our troubles might be especially great, music is there to help ease the burden. The message starts simply, grows more emotional, passionate, and grand, and then comes back to the simple thought that “it’s the music that brings us together” . . . but it’s the friends we share music with that matter the most and that make each day special.
Special thanks to track producers Tony De Rosa and Michaela Johnston for donating their time and talents to create learning tracks for this arrangement. All three versions are available free of charge at shop.barbershop.org and you can also find the TTBB and SATB at www.advocals.com (Tony) and the SSAA at www.officialjohnstonmusic.com (Michaela).
