Seine Bight’s Jankunu Champions Ready for Competition in ’Griga Seine Bight’s Ligemeri Wanaragua (The Light of Jankunu) and St. Alphonsus Jankunu Dancers will compete in the Second Annual Habinahan Wanaragua Competition in Dangriga this month. Ligemeri Wanaragua, who won the competition last year, will compete in the senior round on Dec. 27, while the St. Alphonsus Jankunu Dancers will be showing off their talent once again at the Junior Competition on Dec. 18. Both rounds will be held at Y -Not Island in Dangriga.

Jacque Cousteau’s Granddaughter Shares Plans to Highlight Belize’s Watersheds in Popular National Geographic TV Series

ElevenYear-old Neville Lopez, Jr. will defend his championship title at the Second Annual Habinahan Wanaragua Competition in Dangriga.

The Cousteau family is putting Belize in the global spotlight once again. The granddaughter of world -famous ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, 35-year-old Alexandra Cousteau, is leading an expedition to highlight the importance of maintaining the health of Belize’s watersheds. Cousteau and her Blue Legacy team visited Belize in October to scout their sites to be featured in a one-hour documentary in the next Expedition Blue Planet series broadcast on the National Geographic Channel. The team will start filming in Belize early next year. Blue Legacy International, an initiative of Washington, D.C.-

based The Ocean Foundation, was founded in 2008 by Cousteau to engage individuals around the world and inspire them to tackle critical water issues in meaningful ways. Cousteau first visited Belize in 2005 when she made a trip to Ambergris Caye, and she's returned every year since. "I fell in love with Belize. People were wonderful and warm," she recalls. In October, she sat down with The Placencia Breeze for an interview at the Turtle Inn – her "home away from home." Having the most intact watershed (See Cousteau. Page 9.)

WELCOME TO PLACENCIA! December is the month that tourism really takes off in Placencia. With snow blanketing much of North America and the kids out of school for the holidays, the eighty degree warmth of Belize proves irresistible to thousands of sun and sand starved visitors. But while our peninsula boasts lovely sand beaches and plenty of tropical sun these are actually two of our lesser attractions. What sets Placencia apart from other Caribbean destinations is that there are so many different things to do. How about a snorkeling trip to Laughing Bird Caye? A SCUBA excursion to Glover’s Reef Atoll? World class fly fishing on the flats…or serious trolling in the blue? Did someone mention ancient Mayan ruins? Hiking fabulous jungle trails? Up close and personal with howler monkeys? Cooling off under a mountain waterfall? Horseback riding? Kayaking? Manatee watching? And we haven’t even mentioned the shopping: everything from unique original paintings and carvings to hammocks, baskets and jewelry.

And of course all that activity works up an appetite. From fine dining to street food I know people who have lived here for years who have yet to experience a bad meal . So by all means go lay out on the beach with a book in one hand and a pina colada in the other. But to tell you the truth you can do that anywhere south of Daytona Beach. To really appreciate what Placencia has to offer you’ll want to get out and experience the wonders all around us, not the least of which is the genuine warmth of the people. Visitors take a moment to add some holiday fun to their diving adventure.

Placencia Sidewalk’s Quiet Legacy, Revealed Most travel literature on Placencia Village is quick to point out that the Placencia sidewalk was once recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the narrowest main street in the world. For some villagers, that international recognition was more than just a record, but a meaningful reward for community team work. Unlike current construction practices on the Peninsula where workers are hired and paid to build, a long stretch of the Placencia sidewalk developed through an impressive voluntary community effort in the late 70s. Lydia Villanueva, owner of Lydia’s Guesthouse on the north end of the sidewalk, recalled participating in this sidewalk extension from the old post office near Sea Spray Resort to the north end of the Placencia Village along with neighboring families. “It was done in phases. It wasn’t rushed. When the men came in

from fishing, they helped. The children worked early in the mornings before they went to school,” said Villanueva. Each family living along the sidewalk took responsibility to build the portion in front of their homes. They collected dead coral, called “pipe shenk” from the Fisherman’s Cooperative by the main dock. The pipe shenk was then mixed with beach sand to make a local version of concrete. Families would first lay a foundation of conch shells before sealing off with the mixture. Villanueva noted that fresh well water had to be poured over the sand to rinse off the sea salt that would affect the curing process. “It was fun,” recalled Villanueva. She said the children especially enjoyed the Kool-aid and snacks, which mothers prepared as rewards for their hard work. Villanueva explained that no one over-exerted themselves during the project and families worked during the early morning hours and late evenings avoiding the hot midday sun. A considerable length of the sidewalk leading up to the very north end was also assisted through the labour of a group of seven young volunteers from the United States. They paid all their own expenses and gave their labour for free. “This sidewalk is so precious. We were so happy when we made it into the Guinness Book of Records,” said Villanueva, Left: The very north end of Placencia’s sidewalk in its original form. When the entire length of the sidewalk was this narrow, it was known as “Jealous Man Street” because a man’s wife would have to walk in front of him. Today, The Placencia Village Council strictly prohibits golf carts and bicycles from riding the foot path. Right: It is estimated that over 30,000 conch shells were laid in the construction of the sidewalk, which spans over 5,000 feet through the Village.

gleaming with pride. The Placencia sidewalk started in the 1940s as a pathway from the vacation house of Anglican Bishop Edward Dunn to St. John’s Memorial Anglican Church. A small sidewalk was later built near the main dock in front of the Co-op in 1947. The 1978-79 sidewalk extension project was organized by Chairperson Doris Leslie whose council purchased construction materials for the families. During this time the Placencia sidewalk was the only hard, flat walking surface in the Village. With no Peninsula road until 1984, the only access to the Village was by boat. The sidewalk was an important transportation route for food and supplies, and men were often seen pushing fully laden wheel barrows up and down the narrow ribbon of concrete. After Hurricane Iris ravaged the Peninsula in 2001, much of the sidewalk suffered damage. A Placencia Sidewalk Committee was established to raise funds to restore the landmark. The width was expanded allowing for two people to walk beside each other down its path. The restored sidewalk was built with river sand and gravel from the main land and catching a piece of conch shell is catching a part of old Placencia history. ▪

His fellow group members from St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Primary School hail from preschool to Standard 6. The young group visited Placencia Village on Nov. 27 performing the Jankunu at various locations along the Peninsula Road and sidewalk, in exchange for monetary donations to support their travel costs to Dangriga. The St. Alphonsus Jankunu Dancers accompanied by their backup singers and drummers captured unsuspecting visitors and locals with their energetic and riveting performances. The group was supervised by their Wanaragua Coach, Ina Williams Martinez, who has been training Jankunu performers for the past six years. Martinez’ brother, Leonard Williams, is leading the Ligermeri Wanaragua.

system in the region, Cousteau says Belize is a great place to tell the story of the interconnectivity of watersheds, but warned that without local groups working to protect them, that could change very quickly.

“We won the first ever competition, and we are so passionate about competing again,” said Williams whose father Herman Williams was recently presented the Wanaragua Legend Award in Seine Bight on Garifuna Settlement Day. Williams said the sponsoring of the St. Alphonsus Jankunu Dancers is an example of their efforts to invest in Seine Bight’s children to preserve the Garifuna Culture. Typically, Jankunu Christmas season performances in Belize start on Nov. 20 immediately following Garifuna Settlement Day. The Jankunu is a satirical dance to a fast tempo drum beat, which requires dancers to be in top physical condition. A mask is worn mimicking the face of colonial slave masters. Jankunu, thought to have originated in slave plantations, is practiced among the Garinagu in Belize and other West African descendants in some English-speaking Caribbean countries and certain parts of the southern United States. ▪

But Cousteau has hope. She said the individuals fighting for the protection of Belize’s watersheds have been very inspiring. She calls them "Water Heroes” because they are so committed and dedicated to protect our resources. In addition to having their stories told on Expedition Blue Planet, Cousteau and her team will also provide local environmental organizations with free video footage, which can be used for their awareness campaigns and fundraisers to protect Belize's watersheds. Groups on the Placencia Peninsula like the Southern Environmental Association (SEA) and Peninsula Citizens for Sustainable Development (PCSD) will benefit from this initiative. Cousteau appreciates the current natural environment in Belize. She marvels at the forested vistas of the Maya Mountains while traveling on the Hummingbird and Southern Highways. She finds that being able to stand on a mountain top and see the canopy of a lush jungle is "rare these days" and hopes that the Scarlet Macaws will be around for upcoming generations. During her

Perhaps the biggest testament of her love for Belize was her carefully thought-out decision during her film scouting trip to have her three-month-old baby, Clémentine Frédérique Neumeyer, take her first ocean dip in Placencia's waters – a decision that one can only imagine is of paramount importance in the Cousteau family. "I didn't want it to be in Los Angeles. I wanted it to be in a place that's ALIVE." BREEZE ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: RAS-T, conch shell carver Forty-year-old Thurman “Ras-T” Turner is an expert lobster fisherman turned expert carver. He has immortalized images from the sea and of other wildlife in the form of truly unique conch shell carvings.

rays, manatees and even the infamously elusive permit fish, as well as the ubiquitous grunt. Each creature’s eye is a delicately inserted piece of black coral.

Turner is originally from the Cayo District and moved to Placencia Village when he was nine years old. At age 15, he picked up fishing as a trade, later focusing on lobster diving. During the slow season when lobster sales were down, Turner decided to try his hands at jewelry making. He was inspired by a few friends in the Village who were using black coral and the black and white patterned wilks shells to create earrings, necklaces and bracelets.

His close jewelry-making friends were fascinated with his creations, and became his first customers. Each carving takes Turner about four hours. Recently, he took up a special order to carve a conch shell mermaid. That took him five hours. Turner enjoys the challenge and notes that his conch shell carvings have succeeded lobster fishing as his primary trade. “When I finish, and I look at it, I feel proud,” said Turner with an honest smile. He just might be the first person in Belize to take it upon himself to create elaborate carvings out of conch shells. Clients on the Peninsula have been flocking to Turner with their custom orders.

Then in 2005, Yolanda “Yoli” Tretheway from Yoli’s Bar asked Turner to make her a few conch shell cigarette ashtrays. Tretheway found the typical shallow conch shell ash tray, which can be found at many gift shops across Belize, didn’t work at her bar where the sea breeze kept blowing out the ashes. Turner decided to take a different approach to conch shell ashtray design, cutting away a smaller part of the shell allowing for a deeper tray. It worked, and Tretheway was pleased. While Turner was custom-making a few more ashtrays for Tretheway, he discovered room for creativity. The natural grooves and shape of the conch shell reminded him of a bird, and he slowly began cutting away the shell and carving out the image using photographic memory. From there, he took off. He carved turtles, dolphins, eagle

Placencia Folks Explain Christmas Bramming P

lacencia loves an excuse to party, and Christmas is no exception. The traditional bramming begins right after Christmas Eve Mass at St. John’s Memorial Anglican Church in Placencia Village and accelerates through the night running on booze, tasty food and lively music until well into the next day. Seventy-seven-year-old Villamar “Villa” Godfrey, a long-time Placencia fisherman, explained the Creole bramming tradition: “After Mass, we branch out from house to house. We don’t stay for too long, and we go all night and all morning and then we do it all over again the next day.”

And while that element of bramming continues today, a few things have changed. In the past, bramming was not complete without singing and dancing to some good ole’ Kriol (Creole) BrukDown music, which was usually performed live at individual homes. Godfrey said that mouth organs (harmonicas) were popular instruments and “some people will be hitting bottles and other things if they have to,” added Donna Gardiner who vocalized the resulting sound: “Shikashik! Shika-shik! Shika-shik!” Gardiner sat with Godfrey in front of her guide services shop, Nite Wind, next to the Fishermen’s Cooperative. Today, you would be lucky to catch a live Brukdown performance in someone’s living room. Bram hosts in the Village have dwindled over the years, but the few who remain are still dishing out the Creole Christmas favorites. Revelers at these lively Creole Christmas brammings dine informally on plates of stewed chicken, baked turkey or roast duck with generous sides of rice ‘n’ beans, potato salad, stuffings and cranberry jelly. Ham is usually served as “boca” (hors d’ oeuvres)

and white or black fruit cake, a clear remnant of Belize’s colonial past, is the featured dessert… although, Mr. Godfrey said not many people enjoy eating the sweets while drinking.

And he might be right. Bramming party hosts treat their guests to the very sweet, syrupy and highly potent local cashew and black berry homemade wines traditionally made right here on the Placencia Peninsula. Rum Popo (spiked egg nog), beer and scotch are also favorite libations. Bramming in Placencia is not for the weak. Those who can’t contain their liquor or lack of sleep, fall victim to hysterical pranks including the notorious facepainting. “If you pass out, your face

gets painted up with make-up,” warned Godfrey’s granddaughter, 19-year-old Leonie Faux, who joined Godfrey and Gardiner at Nite Wind. They were sure to note that neither of them has met this shameful fate and laughed as they reminisced about villagers who wake up looking like clowns time and time again. Our advice this holiday season: Try not to fall asleep at anyone’s house during a good old school Christmas party. ▪

Holiday Recipes From Across The Peninsula JANICE’S SHRIMP BREAD PUDDING 1 loaf of bread sliced 1 lb of shrimp 1 onion chopped 1 sweet pepper chopped 4 cloves of garlic chopped 8 eggs 2 cans evaporated milk 2 cups of regular milk 2 sticks of butter 1 tablespoon season all 1 teaspoon season all 1 tablespoon complete season 1 teaspoon complete season ½ cup sour crème ¼ cup of cilantro ¼ cup of grated cheese Dash paprika to decorate top of pudding Dash of pepper Butter each slice of bread on both sides. Sautee garlic, onion, sweet pepper with the balance of butter. Cut up shrim in two and add to the garlic mixture. Add 1 tablespoon of season all, 1 teaspoon of complete season, dash pepper, sour crème and cheese. Alternate slices of bread, shrimp mixture, and egg mixture, Will make about two rows. Sprinkle cilantro and grated cheese. Add dash of paprika. Bake in a preheated oven at 350° for about 45 minutes.

MS. JACKI’S BLACK CAKE 1 lb butter 1 bottle Belikin stout 1 bottle dark rum 8 eggs 2 teaspoon lime rind (zested) 2 teaspoon Raynor's vanilla extract 1 lb bebe agua flour-sifted (use 1/2 cassava flour + 1/2 lb rice flour for glutenfree) 2 teaspoon baking powder 2 teaspoon mixed spice 1 lb brown sugar-to stew fruit 2 lbs brown sugar 1 teaspoon fresh grated nutmeg Stew fruit -1 lb each prunes, raisins, cherries, dates, ripe mango, cut into pieces or mango puree, mixed peel & walnuts or pecans Stew fruit with 1 lb sugar & rum ‘til thick syrup consistency. Let cool overnight. In large mixing bowl, cream butter with 2 lbs brown sugar - add eggs, blending one at a time - add sifted flour, baking powder, nutmeg & spice alternately with stout - folding in, cooled fruit puree. Line greased pans with brown or parchment paper & fill 3/4 full with cake batter. Bake in slow oven, 250-270 degrees for 3 hours. Cool completely before storing wrapping in plastic and/or storing in tins for holiday giving-enjoy!

MARCUS & ANNA’S BEEF & KIDNEY CASSEROLE Check out Beefmasters for the better beef products available in Belize. A classic English dish with the addition of Belikin stout. A great dish to enjoy when a cold front rolls in. This recipe would serve 5 good portions. www.marcusperigo.com for more recipes like this. 1kg Beef Silverside (or Chuck steak) 500-600g Ox Kidneys 500g Onions (sliced) 600ml Chicken stock 60ml Red Wine 100ml stout 5ml Worcester sauce 1 Bayleafs 1Sprigs of Savoury/Thyme 5g Beef Stock/Bouillon 10 Plain Flour Vegtable oil Salt & Black Pepper (Optional Chopped mixed herbs i.e. Marjoram, Rosemary & Sage) Trim the beef & cut into 2-3cm cubes. Peel & trim kidneys cut into triangle shape chunks. Heat 2 pans to “smoking point” add veg oil re-heat. Roll beef & kidneys (separately) in seasoned flour. Seal meat in pans till the meat colours. Add onions cook to caramelised . Add bay & thyme & red wine / deglaze for 2-3 mins. Add stock / bring to boil / skim / cover with lid. Simmer gently till beef is tender (but

DAWN’S ROAST GIBNUT 2 lb leg of gibnut cleaned 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp black pepper 1 tbsp of rosemary 1 tbsp of dijon style mustard 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/8 cup of red wine 1 tbsp brown sugar 1 cup of water Stuffing: 1 medium-sized yellow onion 1 small green bell pepper 1 fresh jalapeno pepper 6 fresh white mushrooms Preheat oven to 450 F or 250 C. Debone gibnut. In a small bowl combine dried spices with minced garlic, mustard, wine and sugar. Rub mixture over gibnut and inside cavity. Finely chop onion, peppers and mushrooms and stuff in cavity. Reserve 1/4 cup of chopped vegetables. Place gibnut on rack in covered roaster filled with one cup of water for gravy. Sprinkle reserved chopped vegetables on top of gibnut. Roast gibnut for 30 minutes then reduce heat to 400 F or 200 C and bake for an additional 60 minutes. Let the roast rest for at least 10 minutes before carving.

SECRET GARDEN LOBSTER MARTINI APPETIZER 12 ounces cooked lobster meat 4 ounces peeled and seeded cucumber, cut into sticks 1 ripe avocado, peeled, pitted and cubed 4 ounces baby lettuces About 1/3 cup Olive & Vermouth Vinaigrette (see recipe) 1 lime, peeled and segmented 3 dill sprigs, chopped Salt if needed 4 pimiento-stuffed olives 1 lemon, cut into wedges Place lobster, cucumber, avocado and lettuces in separate bowls, toss each with some of the vinaigrette. Combine all dressed ingredients in a bowl; scatter in lime segments and dill; toss again. Taste and add more dressing, and salt, if needed. Olive & Vermouth Vinaigrette This dressing keeps well in the refrigerator for several days. Shake or stir before using. 3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 6 tablespoons Champagne vinegar 1/4 cup dry vermouth 2 tablespoons brine from olive jar 1 small shallot, minced 1/4 cup chopped pimiento-stuffed olives Salt and pepper to taste Combine the olive oil, vinegar, vermouth and olive brine in a blender; add the shallot and blend on high speed for 1 to 2 minutes. Add the olives, salt and pepper and blend again quickly. Taste and adjust seasonings. Transfer to a jar with a tight -fitting lid and refrigerate until ready to use. Yields about 2 cups. Serve in an oversized martini glass.

LOLA DELGADO’S LASUSU FALUMA & MACHUCA COCONUT FISH SOUP WITH MASHED PLANTAINS 4 cups fish stock made from scratch (See below.). Canned fish, chicken or vegetable stock can be substituted. 2 crushed cloves of garlic 1 diced sweet pepper salt & your seasonings to taste 1 cassava (about 10 inches long) cut into cubes 1 sliced onion 1 cup coconut milk 1 whole fish per serving Make fish stock by boiling fish heads, shrimp shells, the non-white conch meat or any leftover fish "stuff", and garlic. Boil for 15 minutes. Strain. To the stock add onions, sweet pepper, salt and your spices. Give it a little kick by adding jalapenos. Add cassava (and if using chicken, add now), and coconut milk. Cook until cassava and chicken are tender. 3) Fry or boil fish in stock for 7 minutes. If the fish is fried, place in a bowl and pour soup over it. Serve with machuca and lime slices. MACHUCA 2 ripe plantains 2 green plantains 1/4 tsp salt Boil till plantains are soft, then mash together until it is similar to mashed potatoes. Serve on the side with the lasusu.

GESPRITZTE LINZER-AUSTRIAN CHRISTMAS COOKIES FROM SIMONE & HERBERT 8 oz butter 3 oz confectioners sugar 1 egg 1 egg yolk 11 oz flour 1 tbl spoon vanilla sugar lime peal a bit salt strawberry jam for filling

Put the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until it’s smooth. Then place the dough into an oiled plastic bag (or cover with a tea-towel and leave in a warm place). Leave it for about an hour until it has doubled in size. Sprinkle the raisins/sultanas and mixed peel over the dough. Knead until they are completely mixed in. Place the mixture in the cake tin and leave it in a warm place, until it has doubled in size again. It will take about 45 minutes. When it has risen, bake it in the oven for 10 minutes, then reduce the heat to 350F, 180C, Gas Mark 4 and bake it for another 30 minutes. When it’s done it should be golden brown and firm to the touch. Cool the panettone, and dust it with icing sugar.

JOHN LEE’S HONEY SPICED CAKE Whisk warm butter with confectioners sugar, vanilla sugar, lime peal and salt till fluffy. Slightly beat 1-egg plus yolk; mix slowly into a batter. Sift flour and fold together. Put wax paper on baking tray & dress about 40 pieces. Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees and bake for 10 min. Let cool down, flip half of the pieces over and spread with jam. Piece together with the rest of the cookies. Leave it plain or dip into chocolate. This recipe is very traditional and every family in Austria bakes these for Christmas.

PANETTONE FROM TIZIANA Panettone is a rich Italian Christmas cake. It is a spongy, yeasted cake with plenty of fruit and tastes good sliced and spread with butter. Alternatively eat a slice of fresh panettone with a glass of sweet wine, such as Vin Santo. It's a versatile cake and can also be used in a variety of desserts – and if you have some left over after Christmas and it’s a little dry, then use it in a trifle instead of ordinary sponge, or toast it and eat with butter and jam. Serves 8 1 teaspoon sugar 1 tablespoon dried yeast 4 tablespoons milk (or buttermilk) 100g (4oz) butter 50g (2oz) caster sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional) 3 (free range if possible) eggs, beaten finely grated rind of ½ a lemon finely grated rind of ½ an orange 400g (14oz) plain (all purpose) flour or white bread flour, sifted 1 teaspoon salt 100g (4oz) raisins or sultanas 75g (3oz) chopped mixed peel Preheat the oven to 400F, 200C, Gas Mark 6. Butter a 20cm (8 in) cake tin and line with lightly buttered greaseproof paper. Pour the milk (or buttermilk) into a bowl, then sprinkle on the sugar and yeast. Leave for around 10 minutes – it should start to go frothy. Combine the butter and caster sugar in a bowl and beat them together until they are very fluffy. Then beat in the eggs gradually, followed by the lemon and orange rind (and the vanilla extract if you’re using it). Place the flour and salt in a large bowl. Now gently fold in the milky/yeast fluid, followed by the creamed butter/sugar mixture. Mix them all together until you have a soft dough.

3 Cups Flour 2 Teaspoons Salt 2 Teaspoons Ground Cinnamon 1 Teaspoon Baking Soda ½ Teaspoon Ground Cloves 2 Cups Honey 2 Cups Sour Cream Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour two 9" x 5" loaf pans. Whisk flour, salt, cinnamon, baking soda and cloves in a medium bowl. Using electric mixer, beat honey and butter in large bowl to blend. Beat in sour cream. Add dry ingredients and beat to blend. Divide mixture between the two loaf pans. Bake until tester inserted into cake comes out clean (about 45 minutes). To Serve Heat up a Panini / sandwich grill. Cut each cake lengthwise into ¾” to 1” thick slices and butter both sides of each slice. Place slices of cake into Panini grill and press down gently. Cook until the outside of the cake becomes slightly crispy. Place two scoops of vanilla ice cream on each slice and serve with warm caramel sauce on the side Caramel Sauce 2 Cups Sugar 2 Tablespoons Lyle's Golden Syrup 1/2 Cup Water 1 Cup Heavy Cream ¼ Cup Unsalted Butter 2 Teaspoons Vanilla Essence Stir sugar, water and Lyle's syrup in a heavy saucepan over medium-low heat until sugar dissolves. Increase heat and boil without stirring until syrup reaches 340F (dark amber color), occasionally brushing down sides of pan with wet pastry brush and swirling pan. Remove from heat. Gradually whisk in the cream (mixture will bubble vigorously). Add butter and stir until combined Allow to cool for a few minutes then stir in vanilla.

COMMUNITY briefs Rotary Club of Placencia The last month was, once again, a busy and successful month for the Rotary Club of Placencia as we continued with our twice a month Bingo games, held one of our favorite annual events, saw work almost completed on a major project, and hosted the District Governor. BINGO The first Bingo game of the month was held on November 3 and featured a large, enthusiastic crowd with the lucky winners being Alma, Lynn (3 time winner), Celia, James, Elsa, Annie, Adrian and Ivan (split pot), Therese (split pot with Lynn), Karl, and Darryl. The winner of the “cover all” jackpot game was Celia, who didn’t win the progressive jackpot, but took home a pot of over $100. The money raised from this game will be used towards the purchase of a defibrillator. The crowd on November 17 was smaller but no less enthusiastic with the winners being Elizabeth, Gloria, Karl (2 time winner), Therese, Adrian (2 time winner), Celia (2 time winner), and Malu (split pot with Celia). The winner of the “cover all” jackpot game was Elizabeth. Once again, the “cover all” game was not completed in 49 balls or less, so, the progressive jackpot will be over $1300 for the next game. We wish to thank everyone that comes out to play and support their community, Kathy Anglin for calling the games, and J-Dees for providing the venue. We look forward to seeing better attendance in the coming months. HAUNTED HOUSE The planning started in late August for our annual Haunted House, but the real work began on October 26 as Rotary Club of Placencia members and volunteers gathered in the morning for the start of what proved to be 4 days of hard work to make sure that this year’s version of the Haunted House was the best one yet. Due to scheduling conflicts with the Community Center, setup could not begin until Wednesday morning and the Haunted House had to be held on Friday October 28 and cleaned up by noon on Saturday, so, volunteers worked throughout the day as their schedules allowed to complete the setup. On the big night, Rotary members and volunteers, many already in costume and makeup, started to gather in the late afternoon to make sure everything was ready for our 6:00 PM opening. By the time all was ready, children (and more than a few adults) were already lined up and ready to be entertained and frightened by scenes that included an incredibly realistic swamp complete with swamp creatures, a ghoul’s café and attached butcher shop, a gruesome manicurist shop, a shower murder scene, a “lovely” grandmother rocking a baby, and, of course, our famous graveyard scene which continues to grow each year. In addition to these scenes, those walking through were greeted by random ghouls that ensured that those waiting outside would hear plenty of screaming and question the wisdom of going inside (some never made it past the first 2 scenes before running back out through the door screaming). By the time the doors closed, over $600 had been raised to be put towards the toy drive for Christmas and all agreed that it was well worth the effort. This year’s event concluded on Saturday morning as Rotary Club members and volunteers gathered to take down everything, pack it up for next year, and make sure that the building was clean and ready to set up for the planned Saturday night event. The Haunted House, while not a large fund raiser for the Rotary Club of Placencia, is a favorite event, despite all the work, because of the fun we have doing it and the fun people seem to have going through it. Most of the members of our Club participate in this event in some way, but, we could not make this happen without a large number of volunteers from the community. This year’s volunteers included (we apologize in advance for any that may be left out) Jim & Sharon Hunter (visiting from Canada), Adrian Burke, Izak Leslie, Casey Christensen, Cindy Weller, Lynn Ann Snellman, Marco Supaul (scholarship student), Marco Funez (scholarship student), Andrea Chironos (scholarship student), Tiana Felix (scholarship student), Annette Vernon, Wini Mertens, Cleeve Westby, Oscar Scott, Darryl Cooper,

In addition to these hard working people, special mention needs to go to Kathy Anglin, Tracy Eiley and Lucy Wallen for, as usual, going above and beyond in the planning, set up, and cleanup. We thank all those involved and all who came out to have fun and support our community. Planning discussions for next year started while the cleanup was taking place and we look forward to making next year’s Haunted House the best one yet. SEINE BIGHT PRESCHOOL Work on the expansion of the Seine Bight preschool started at the end of October as the contract was signed with Martin Galvez and materials were purchased and workers on site almost immediately. This project will more than double the space in the existing preschool and provide room for computers and a library, as well as bathrooms inside the building. The project, which is being managed by the Rotary Club of Placencia in conjunction with the Seine Bight PTA, was made possible by generous donations from the Rotary Club of Edmonton West in Canada and the St. John Lutheran Church in Ellisville, Missouri in the U.S. At the time this article was written, remaining work to be completed included plumbing, installation of fans and lights, interior painting, and security installation, therefore, we expect to report that the project has been completed by the time this article is published. Our sincere thanks go out to The Rotary Club of Edmonton West and the St. John Lutheran Church in Ellisville, Missouri. Without their generous contributions, this project would not have been possible. GOVERNOR’S VISIT Every year the District Governor for Rotary District 4250, comprised of Belize, Guatemala and Honduras, visits each club in the District to evaluate the Club’s performance and review Rotary programs that may benefit our Club and the community. This year’s visit was on November 16 and the day started with Officers and Board Members meeting at Yoli’s with District Governor Jose Moreno for discussions regarding what we have accomplished, what we can improve upon, and what resources are available to us. The meeting concluded at noon and we were joined by the Governor’s wife, Linda, for a delicious lunch prepared by Merlene. Following lunch, the Governor was given a tour of the many projects we have completed in the Village before heading back to his room to rest up for the evening’s festivities. Placencia Rotarians and guests, District Governor Moreno and his wife Linda, and Rotarian Paul Hunt gathered in the evening at the Paradise Resort for the annual Governor’s Dinner. The evening started with a cocktail hour followed by our Mistress of Ceremonies Maretha McCullock leading the group in the Rotary Prayer and the Belize National Anthem before turning the microphone over to Rotary Club of Placencia President Steve Wade for the Welcome Address. Steve then stepped aside and Paul Hunt introduced the District Governor who spoke about the success our Club has had and provided information about Rotary International’s programs and this year’s theme “Reach Within to Embrace Humanity”. The evening concluded with an excellent dinner and time for fellowship. We wish to thank Placencia Rotarians Maretha McCullock and Wanda Stakutis for their efforts organizing the various aspects of the day, David Vernon for assisting us by providing and setting up the projector and sound, Paul Hunt for taking time out of his busy schedule to join us and introduce the District Governor, Yoli’s and Merlene for providing the meeting space and great lunch, Alan Stamm, Nazle Frutos, Shannon Romero, Tracy Eiley, and the rest of the staff at the Paradise Resort for working with us (despite all of the last minute changes) and making the evening special, and, of course, District Governor Jose Moreno and his wife Linda for making this one of the best District Governor visits we’ve had. Their kind words and support go a long way towards making our work a little easier. OUR CLUB The District Governor’s visit gave our Club the opportunity to review all that has been accomplished and enjoy, once again, the feeling of achieving something that benefits the community by working together, We encourage everyone that wants to experience this to consider joining us as individuals or as business owners sponsoring a representative of their business. Please stop by one of our meetings (Tuesdays at 12:30 PM at Yoli’s, lunch is $10) to see what we are planning. If we all work together, there is no limit to what we can do.
