CHOCOLATE!

By LYRA SPANG Owner, anthropologist & tour guide, Taste Belize

F

ebruary, that sacred month of pink heart shaped cards and boxes of decadent treats, is a good time to write about chocolate. And not only because savvy marketers link sweets with love. February falls smack in the middle of Belize’s cacao harvest. Across southern Belize, farmers are inspecting their cacao tree orchards and hand picking pods filled with the seeds that will become Valentine’s Day’s favorite candy. Today Belize is known for producing some of the most delicious cacao beans in the world. Fine chocolate makers across the planet are flocking to our little jewel hoping to get their hands on some cacao. Prices are rising and farmers are benefiting from international attention, but this is nothing new for our part of the world. Cacao became a luxury good in Central America thousands of years ago and the Maya city states in our region grew and traded this sought after treat via long distance trading routes that landed beans as far north as Arizona. The seeds of the cacao tree were so valuable that up until the arrival of the Spanish, people across Central America and into Mexico used them as a default currency. Poor people traded this money that grew on trees instead of drinking up their savings. Consuming chocolate bev-

erages everyday was a sign of wealth in a world with no metal currency. After the apocalypse of European conquest, the surviving Maya peoples continued to cultivate cacao for home consumption, serving it for special feast days, engagement parties and weddings, a practice that continues to this day. With the founding of a farmers cooperative, the Toledo Cacao Growers Association (TCGA) in 1984, Belize’s modern cacao commerce began in the south of the country. Maya family farms continue to form the backbone of this increasingly diverse and dynamic sector. In the last 14 years a number of small chocolate companies have opened in Belize. Even those located in northern Belize, such as Belize Chocolate Company in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, source their cacao beans from Toledo District, the heart of the industry where over 90% of the country’s cacao is cultivated. Here on Placencia Peninsula, Goss Chocolate Company, the first business to commercially produce chocolate in Belize, uses Toledo-grown

cacao beans as the base for their bars, cacao nibs and cacao powder which can be found in stores across the peninsula. On the mainland in Maya Centre Village at the entrance to the famed Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve, tiny Che’il Chocolate produces both dark and milk chocolates from local beans and recently invented a local candy bar with a cream chocolate and peanut filling. Cotton Tree Chocolate operates out of a small facility in Punta Gorda Town. Not far away, in the Kekchi Maya community of San Felipe, Ixcacao Chocolate, a Belizean Maya family enterprise, produces some of Belize’s best dark chocolate, using organic, farm to table production techniques and sustainable farming systems. Placencia Village was graced with their presence this month, at the Placencia Sidewalk Arts Festival. dark night outside the reef, just beyond the elbow (Gladden Spit), it was extremely windy and rough, waves were at least 6 feet, rocking our tiny vessel violently. The moonlight was just enough for the two Coast Guard Seamen and I to see just in front of us. We had to remain vigilant, it was snapper spawning season, prime time for transboundary fishers to come across to illegally fish in Belizean waters and these fishers could be anywhere around us, watching our patrol. We sighted one and took off toward the large vessel…that night we made four arrests and confiscated several fishes and a vessel.” Serapio Chun, SEA Senior Enforcement Ranger In 2018 and 2019 SEA, made 36 arrests on fisheries offences, 33 of which were successfully prosecuted, 6 reports on development related offences, 4 search and rescue or recoveries, 3 vessel grounding inspections, and forwarded 3 tourism related offences to the Belize Tourism Board. During that period SEA invested in new equipment including GPS Units utilizing the Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) for enhanced and efficient patrols. We also increased staff, built capacity, improved our relationship with key partners (including the Police, Coast Guard, the Forest and Fisheries Departments and other co-managers), enhanced fleet coordination, strategic enforcement and protected areas related data management with the direct aim to improve the integrity of key marine areas in southern Belize. On December 20, 2019, SEA was recognized by the Protected Areas Conservation Trust as the very first Enforcement Program Awardee receiving a plaque and $25,000.00 Bzd to be used toward advancing the organization’s mission, vision

or enforcement unit’s enforcement objectives. The following criteria was used by a panel of judges in their selection of SEA: 1. Mission Planning and Reporting, 2. Use of technology in enforcement to increase efficiency, 3. Readiness of key enforcement equipment. SEA is extremely proud of this accomplishment, proud of the work of the staff and especially our SEA Rangers. These Rangers have multiple responsibilities including community outreach, marine science data collection, reporting all related infractions, and enforcement of fisheries laws. They play a major role in conservation having gone above and beyond the call of duty by conducting day and night patrols within and around Laughing Bird Caye National Park (LBCNP) and Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve (GSSCMR) also within the Placencia Lagoon. SEA, would like to thank all our stakeholders for their vigilance and commitment. It is through these collaborations we are able to continuously protect our marine. In conclusion, the ultimate responsibility rest with YOU to reinforce, if you see anything that is harming or suspicious you can reach out and report the offense. Please feel free to call our office at 523-3377 or Ranger Station at 665-6519 (LBCNP) at or 6656521(GSSCMR). TAKE ACTION NOW!!!!!!!!!!

German Reporter Gets Crocin’ with the CRC

uring a week in mid-January, a German reporter for the TV show Global Solutions followed the Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC) to showcase some of the various activities, a snapshot of “a day in the life” of the CRC, specifically focusing on Executive Director and Co-Founder Dr. Marisa Tellez as a woman scientist. The debut for broadcast will be in February, and will show some of the CRC work currently on New River in regards to collecting data about the pollution crisis, and visiting their rehab croc Luke at The Belize Zoo as he continues to get continuous veterinary treatment (Luke escaped someone trying to chop at this tail to sell illegally for the meat. When he was found by the CRC he was highly emaciated and part of his tail hanging off as crocs needs their tail for swimming and launching at prey. Now due to treatment and a continuous diet, he is gaining strength. Everyone is crossing fingers for a full recovery!). Additionally the show will highlight a new CRC Croc Ambassador Jabba, a croc who was kept as a pet and relinquished to Forest Depart-

ment and the CRC as the owner realized it was illegal and was hoping he could be released back into the wild (unfortunately he is too habituated to humans and now will be part of the CRC family!), and finally showcase some of the educational outreach CRC conducts around the country. A heart-felt one-on-one interview with Dr. Tellez ended the filming, expressing her concern for what the future holds for the next generation with the increase of pollution and unsustainable development around the world, as well as her work towards rebuilding the bridge between nature and humans. “In 20 years, I want to be able to look my daughter in the eyes and tell her ‘I tried… I tried so hard to conserve, preserve and protect the world we have- to ensure a balance between nature and people so that YOU and YOUR generation would have a future.’”

Every 2 years the CSG holds an international meeting where ~350 scientists from around the world come together to share research, discuss conservation of crocodilians and their habitats, and mitigating human-crocodile conflict just to name a few, and for the upcoming international meeting in May 2020 in Chetumal, Mexico, Dr. Tellez and the CRC are planning to bring 2 of their youngest student volunteers to present in front these experts. Preston Moguel (11yrs old) and Erica Holding (13yrs old) have been part of the CRC’s Next Gen Croc program for over a year, and they will be presenting their work about the crocodile population in Placencia Lagoon, in addition to key

crocodile and manatee habitat that is in need of protection to ensure the survival of these gentle giants and ancient predators. Both students have illustrated a passion for science and conservation, and we expect this opportunity will give them a strong foundation and network that will hopefully assist them as they grow to be Belize’s next environmental leaders. The CRC is currently looking for more funding to assist Preston, Erica and 2 of their guardians to the meeting in Chetumal. A total of $3,000BZ is needed to cover their cost and we have already received an anonymous donation of $1500BZ towards our Next Gen Croc students. Any further funding extending our goal will go back into the Next Gen Croc program. If you are interested in sponsoring and supporting these 2 young Belizean students, please contact CRC Program Coordinator Darcy Ucles at program.coordinator@crcbelize.org to discuss donation options. lton Christopher Reyes was born on August 8th, 1959 weighing exactly seven pounds to mother Josephine (Jessie) Eiley and Ernesto Reyes Sr. Cagey was raised in the beautiful village of Placencia with his mom and grandparents Mirry and Edward Eiley in Bakadeer amongst several cousins who were like brothers and sisters to Cagey. All of us have known him in various roles: Father, Common Law

Husband, Uncle, Cousin, Grandpa, Mentor, and a great friend. He was better known as Elton Eiley or Cagey. Cagey attended Catholic school at Cattle Landing in Punta Gorda for a couple years. He decided to stop school in Standard 5, as his passion was fishing and diving which he did with his uncle Willie who was his Godfather and like a father and role model to him. Knowing his true passion was fishing and diving, he purchased his first cast net by a man named “Teko” and his mom Jessie gave him his very first dorey and this was where his sea life began. Buttonwood Caye was the first caye he worked doing fishing, diving, snorkeling and tours was his true passion. His best friends at the time were Freddy, Dean and Toso Cabral (they were often mistaken as brothers) among other close cousins. Noel Eiley & Earl Godfrey were his first dive partners and also true friends. As their childhood went by, See ELTON REYES EULOGY continued onon page 18

January 20, 2020 Greetings~ By Amanda Harris Amik Kil Ha’ friendlywatersbelize@gmail.com

As a fellow business owner here on the Placencia Peninsula, I would like to invite you to support inspiring local environmentalist Monique Vernon in her quest to build attractive and functional metal ‘creatures’ along the Peninsula shoreline to collect plastic.

very day, millions of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans and according to UNESCO, are responsible for the deaths of over 100,000 marine mammals and one million seabirds every year. In 2018, the Government of Belize issued a press release that began the phasing out process of single-use plastic items and this year signed into law the Environmental Protection Regulation which came into effect on January 15th.

She has also created a Facebook page called Mr. Goby & Friends for folks who would love to follow their journey on the Peninsula. Let Belize be that country that stands head high for its environment. Let our Belizean sea be plastic-free!

If you are not familiar with Monique, you should be! She is an inspiring and committed young Belizean woman who is working hard to protect and preserve the ocean that she loves and that is directly connected to so many people’s livelihoods and passions in Belize and beyond. Growing up in Placencia, Monique was inspired by her grandmother Ms. Cherrymae Vernon to get a good education and follow her passions. Monique graduated from the University of Belize in Science with a degree in Natural Resource Management. Further inspired by Lisa Carne the founder and Executive Director of our fantastic and local ‘Fragments of Hope’ NGO, Monique has worked with many local organizations in a variety of positions. Recently, Monique followed one of her dreams and funded and installed the first plastic collector beside Tipsy Tuna in early January, fondly calling it ‘Mr. Goby’ and a second one called ‘Thelo the Turtle’ was installed this past week with funds from a GoFundMe started for this project. As business owners on the Placencia Peninsula, I would like to encourage you to reach out to Monique personally to see how you can assist her in this fantastic

is to carry out Cabinet’s decision to reduce plastic and styrofoam pollution through the phasing out of single-use plastics, including shopping bags, styrofoam and plastic food utensils. This decision was made as a necessary pollution control measure to protect the terrestrial and marine environment from harmful plastic contamination. These regulations have undergone months of legislative drafting and re-drafting, and have been subjected to an extensive consultation

period with regulators and stakeholders from the private sector such as importers, manufacturers, and producers of single-use plastics. This new legislation regulates the importation and manufacture of Restricted Products listed in Schedule I of the regulations through a licensing and permitting process through the Department of the Environment. The legislation also prohibits the importation, manufacture, sale, and possession of Prohibited Products listed in Schedule II of the Regulations. This Prohibition will be conducted through a transitional process as follows: (a) prohibit the importation of products listed in Schedule II three (3) months after the enactment date of this legislation; (b) prohibit the manufacture of products listed in Schedule II six (6) months after the enactment date of this legislation; (c) prohibit the sale of products listed in Schedule II nine (9) months after the enactment date of this legislation; and (d) prohibit the possession of

products listed in Schedule II twelve (12) months after the enactment date of this legislation. The list of single-use plastic products to be prohibited as per Schedule II of the Environmental Protection (Pollution from Plastics) Regulations, 2020, is as follows: • Single-use Styrofoam and plastic “clamshells” • Single-use styrofoam and plastic plates, bowls, and cups and lids • Single-use plastic forks, knives, spoons, sporks, and cutlery • Single-use plastic carrier bags commonly referred to as shopping bags and/or T-shirt bags • Single-use plastic drinking straws Originally published in the blog by caribbeanlifestyle.com

1st Annual Rum & Brukdown Festival!

By FRANKIE GAGLIANO Owner Afrodite Caffe & Bar info@bigtittyrum.com

n October 28, 1991 three independent weather systems converged in the north Atlantic to create a rare phenomenon known as the perfect storm. The recipe was simple, the conditions were right and the results were astronomical. Spontaneous events are unpredictable and the element of surprise is big. In October, 2019 a 3 day event billed as “Belize International Rum & Tiki Festival” was held at the Princess Hotel & Casino. It attracted numerous local exhibitors as well as some top brands from around the Caribbean. Skilled mixologists came from around the world to compete in the Tiki competition. The players were there and they were ready. Unfortunately the (dis)organizers were overly ambitious but painfully inexperienced. It was poorly promoted. Public attendance was almost nonexistent leaving a large cast of diverse participants to mix, socialize and lament amongst themselves. The event was

a financial disaster, a total flop and a disappointment to everyone involved. A common refrain was “we’ll never do this again”, and can you blame them? But Rum festivals are nothing new and some of them are really awesome, so why not this one? On January 18, 2020 three independent entities converged in Placencia to create a rare phenomenon known as the perfect party. The recipe was simple, the conditions were right and the results were amazing. Spontaneous events are unpredictable and the element of surprise is big. If Belize does anything better than most it’s party. So why not give it another shot? Two newcomers to the local rum scene decided to join forces and give it a try. The formula was pretty simple; throw a big party, feature outstanding rums, top local bartenders, traditional Belizean Brukdown music, DJ, MC and plenty of prizes. Don’t do cover charge, easy on the rules, and above all have it in a really cool place. Enter Copalli Rum, Big Titty Rum and Barefoot Beach Bar. Copalli Rum; the only single cane rum in Belize, the only traditional rum agricole made in Belize and a new shooting star in the Belize market and beyond. This rum is outstanding. Big Titty Rum with a new, refreshing approach. Yes, raising a few (old) eyebrows and making occasional waves but winning

countless hearts in the process. Try it, you’ll like it. Unlikely bed partners, who cares? Now add Barefoot Beach Bar and the dynamic Dial sisters, great location, super setting, skilled staff and all Placencia party professionals. What do you get? The perfect party.

2pm until midnight. Special thanks to DJ Boneyfide, MC Denise, Cocono Bwai the crowned prince of Belizean Brukdown music and the hundreds and hundreds of festival goers in attendance. If you think this was fun wait until next year!
