Your expert guide to all things edible in Belize.

Dalla Wap!

By LYRA SPANG Owner, anthropologist & tour guide, Taste Belize

tastebelize@gmail.com

W

alking south down Main Street, Placencia Village, Stann Creek District, Belize on a beautiful sunset evening, you may see a folding table boasting a big ice box on the left side of the road just before Dawn’s Grill. In front a chalkboard sign proudly proclaims “Dalla Wap!” For the uninitiated this advertising completely fails to enlighten, but if one takes a moment to observe the action around this cooler one notices that people are flocking to the table, clutching the heavy octagon known

as a Belizean dallar coin. In return for this pittance they are handed a small paper bag out of the hot steaming depths of the ice box. Peppa? Ketchup? Inquires the stocky man running the show. Depending on the response, bottles of fiery Marie Sharps habanero sauce and Grace’s Caribbean style ketchup (no high fructose corn syrup, cane sugar only!) fly into action to season what hides within the plain brown hand

sized sack. If you venture close enough you will notice there are 2 different sized bags nestled in neat rows inside the cooler. The smaller one is the true “dalla wap”, costing only a single dallar. For this you get an appetizer-sized serving of crispy fried chicken parts topped with a handful of fresh cut plantain chips, but if you want to super-size your poultry you can upgrade to the 3 dallar bag. Chicken parts, you ask, what does that mean? In a country that loves chicken and adores it deep fried, dalla wap was invented to provide that experience for the bird-lover on an extreme budget.

Photo of Dalla Wap sign.

Only the cheapest cuts of the bird are utilized. If you are lucky your paper bag-let will contain a crispy golden chicken foot, deep fried to crunchy perfection, a knobby piece of chicken neck or back, one bite of breast or leg meat and perhaps a chunk of

Photo of friend and I enjoying a dalla wap chicken foot. rich liver or heart. Eating the contents requires assiduous nibbling: cartilage, muscle meat and organ meat all will be devoured and well chewed bones returned to the sack, now converted into a convenient trash bag. Crunchy hand cut plantain chips, coated in sweet and spicy habanero and ketchup, complete the experience. This dive into dalla wap ends with well licked fingers and the application of fist-

fuls of paper napkins. If you are looking for an authentic Belizean snack with a great name, look no further than dalla wap! The mission of Project X is to work alongside the Placencia Village Council to complete a variety of projects in the village, under Village Council aegis. We are asking guests departing from a hotel, airline, restaurant or other business, to deposit their Belizean small change (or leave a donation) in these boxes as they leave.

boxes.Any hotel/restaurant manager/owner who is willing to aid in this effort and place a custom-made box in their lobby area, please contact Therese Young (6315508). Another aspect of placement that would be extremely helpful is if said hotel/restaurant would be willing to help pay for the construction of the boxes, which runs approximately $30.

Volunteering at SEA; inner growth with a holistic Belizean conservation approach ecosystem, and how young people can become involved in this worthy cause. When I first began volunteering, I was very nervous about meeting new people. Moreover, to be honest, I am rather very shy and not very confident. Fast forward to present, I am now more self-assured and assertive as I go out of my way to make people feel welcome, and extend a hand of friendship to others. ne of the ultimate experiences of a student’s life is volunteering for a conservation nongovernmental organization like Southern Environmental Association! (SEA). If you don’t quite believe it, let’s hear from a very enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer.

In the course of my volunteering at the association, I have discovered how to interact with others, learned to respect diversity, realized the importance of service, and gained perspective. Throughout the experience, I am more than ready to become an active member of my community. Not only does the experiences and values I acquired being applied to my personal life, but also it has enhanced my academic life.

to continue participating in more exciting activates like mentioned above. Nothing is better than giving back to your community. Let protect our marine environment together!!! Check out the cool photos of me at SEA Facebook page highlighting activities that I had participated in.”

T

he Crocodile Research Coalition is more than just crocodiles, as we recognize that conservation success of crocodiles is also understanding about the other wildlife in crocodilian habitat. Every month we have been celebrating Wild Wednesday, highlighting the various other wildlife you may encounter in the Placencia Lagoon. So what animals did we highlight for January and February this year? January: We started the New Year with one of the most majestic animals seen around the Placencia Lagoon- the jaguar! The Jaguar (Panthera onca) is the the third largest felid in the world (after the lion and tiger), and the largest in the Western Hemisphere. It is considered Near Threatened throughout its range, yet considered Endangered in Belize (the largest subpopulation is found in the Amazon, making up 89% total of the world’s jaguar population). Jaguars are found throughout Belize in the lowland forests and along the coasts, the size of a their territory de-

According to a recent study, researchers estimate about 800-1000 Jaguars currently inhabit Belize. They are the top predators in their environment, playing an important role in controlling prey populations. However, rapid deforestation and illegal hunting is threatening the existence of jaguars in Belize. Additionally, overhunting of their preferred prey is increasing human-jaguar conflict as jaguars leave the forest seeking for food (such as on farms). As a result, human-jaguar conflict rises which leads to negative perceptions of the animal, despite the fault of unsustainable choices by humans. Sightings of jaguars continue on the western side of the Placencia Lagoon given the lack of development. The communities of the Placencia Lagoon have an important role to promote proper stewardship and sustainable development to ensure the survival of this large cat that was once highly revered by the ancient Maya and Olmec civilizations. February: The Common or Virginia Opossum inhabits the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, and along the coast west of the Rockies from British Columbia, Canada into Mexico and Central America as far south as Costa Rica. This species of opossum is about the size of a house cat, with short legs, an op-

The opossum can be a very fierce fighter for its size. This can startle many carnivores into looking for a meal elsewhere. But in the event that the possum runs into a carnivore much larger, then it has the ability to play "dead." No matter what the attacker does, the possum just lies motionless. Playing "possum" like this does not always succeed because a few carnivores enjoy carrion (food

Over the month of January and February the CRC observed and received calls of various injured wildlife on the road, the opossum being one of them. Their life is as important as yours, so kindly drive safe and slow down. If you see an animal crossing slow down or make a quick stop. These animals love our Placencia Lagoon as much as you do!

he IUCN-SSC Crocodile Specialist Group (CSG) is a worldwide network of biologists, wildlife managers, government officials, independent researchers, non-government (NGO) representatives, farmers, traders, tanners, fashion leaders, and private companies actively involved in the conservation of the world's 28 living species of alligators, crocodiles, caimans and gharial in the wild. As one of more than 100 species specialist groups operating under the auspices of the Species Survival Commission (SSC) of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the world’s largest consortium of conservation organizations and agencies and the only recognized environmental organization by the United Nations, the CSG works closely with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and other international intergovernmental bodies to promote crocodilian conservation and legal trade that does not threaten the survival of these important reptiles.”

in Chetumal, Mexico, the Placencia based wildlife non-profit the Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC) are planning to bring 2 of their youngest student volunteers to present in front these experts. Preston Moguel (11yrs old) and Erica Holding (13yrs old) have been part of the CRC’s Next Gen Croc program for over a year (https://crocodileresearchcoalition.org/next-gn-croc-fostering-the-next-generation-of-environmental-leaders/ ) and they will be presenting their work about the crocodile population in Placencia Lagoon, in addition to key crocodile and manatee habitat that is in need of protection to ensure the survival of these gentle giants and ancient pred-

ators. Both students have illustrated a passion for science and conservation, and we expect this opportunity will give them a strong foundation and network that will hopefully assist them as they grow to be Belize’s next environmental leaders. A GoFundMe was set up to assist Erica and Preston’s adventure to the conference https://www.gofundme. com/f/help-raise-money-for-thenext-gen-croc-students) and the CRC is excited to state that we reached our goal of $4000BZ in less than 24hrs!!! The majority of donations were given by the community of Placencia, with large donations being received internationally. The

Every 2 years the CSG holds an international meeting where ~350 scientists from around the world come together to share research, discuss conservation of crocodilians and their habitats, and mitigating human-crocodile conflict just to name a few, and for the upcoming international meeting in May 2020 Photo of Next Genration Croc Students

GoFundMe account will remain open until mid-April as any other donations received will go towards the project currently underway by Preston and Erica. Exploring the Origins of Belize’s National Heroes and Benefactors Day

Written by : G Michael Bowen

O

riginally called Baron Bliss Day, National Benefactors Day celebrates the many benefactors which have contributed to the country of Belize. Belize is a small country with a grand spirit, perhaps this is why the man we know as Baron Bliss left his fortune to the

people here… Born in 1869 by the name Henry Edward Ernest Victor de Barreto, Baron Bliss spent his childhood in Buckinghamshire, England. He adopted his new name after inheriting lands in Spain and Portugal following the death of his father in 1890. In 1911, Bliss got paralysis, possibly from Polio and lost the use of his legs. This did not stop the spirit of the Baron that so loved the sea. Following the end of the first world war, Baron Bliss retired to a lifetime of sailing, fishing, and leisure. He sailed to the Caribbean where he enjoyed the laidback lifestyle of the tropics. Aboard his yacht, The Sea King II, Baron Bliss sailed through the Caribbean, landing finally in beautiful Belize. Though he never came ashore, the Baron enjoyed fishing trips with local fisherman. He fell in love with the country and its people. This he made clear through his will.

Barons Kind Offering After a few short months in Belize, Barron Bliss passed away. He left nearly £1 million (roughly BZ $1.8 million) to benefit Belizean citizens. The money was placed in a trust account with instructions that only the earned interest be used. Over the years, the trust has provided funding for many projects, including the Bliss Institute (later renamed the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts), the Bliss School of Nursing, the Belize City Water Supply System, the Corozal Town Hall and the purchase of land for the building of Belize’s capital City of Belmopan, among others. A monument, which includes a granite tombstone, commemorates the generous Baron. It sits near the lighthouse at the mouth of the Belize City river where the river meets the Caribbean Sea. Each year, Belizeans

celebrate the life of Baron Bliss and other great Benefactors of Belize with a bank holiday and harbor regatta. In 2008 the holiday name changed from Baron Bliss Day to National Heroes and Benefactors Day, so that not only Baron Bliss, but all of Belize’s great contributors may be remembered.
